was a time of reflection as the community gathered to celebrate the library’s 100th birthday. Throughout these pages you will find photos and testimonials that demonstrate just how important the library is to our community. Thank you to all of you who contributed, in ways both large and small, to the success of our centennial celebration and endowment challenge. We are well positioned for the next 100 years of service. But that does beg the question: What will public libraries be like in the coming decade? Here at Princeton Public Library, we are thinking about the future we want to create, a future that keeps the community’s needs front and center and accommodates the changing way in which people find and use information and consume content. In 2010, we created a strategic plan, with help from
the community, to guide our work. In 2011, we will continue to explore new ways to deliver what you want, whether that is a book, DVD, CD, e-book, online service, class, program or one-on-one interaction with our staff. While we may not be certain about what the future will bring, we are confident that we will continue to innovate, adapt, change and grow to remain relevant and essential to your lives for years to come. Centennial Weekend
T
he library marked its 100th birthday with a weekend of celebrations that exceeded all expectations. Starting with a gala fundraising party at which National Public Radio personality Terry Gross was the keynote speaker, the commemoration continued with an all-day birthday party on Oct. 10 (10.10.10) open to the community. Party events took place both inside the building and in a tent on the outdoor plaza. Musical appearances by local ensembles, a 5K run, and additional activities culminated with the cutting of an elaborately decorated birthday cake created by the winner of a contest among local bakeries. The day was capped off by the presentation of a check payable to the Princeton Community for $10 million representing the culmination of the Centennial Campaign for Endowment. Pi Day
Farmers Market
On March 14, Princeton joined the worldwide observance of Pi Day, marking the 131st birthday of Albert Einstein. The library was home base for the events of the day, which commemorated Pi, the most revered mathematical constant in the known universe. Scientists from the famed Princeton Plasma Physics Lab conducted interactive demonstrations in the Community Room. A piebaking contest was judged at Dispensa, the library’s café. Einstein-themed walking tours began at the library. The event was so popular that an entire weekend of Pi events was planned for 2011.
Hinds Plaza was a popular destination on spring, summer and fall Thursdays during 2010. Local farmers and specialty food purveyors brought their homegrown produce, flowers, and other unique products to stalls set up just outside the library’s doors. Princeton Farmers’ Market, presented through a partnership between the library, the Borough of Princeton and local merchants, drew record crowds to the plaza. Live music and café seating added to the festive atmosphere. Special market-day activities and family events were offered, including cooking classes by a prominent local chef, who used products from each week’s market as ingredients.
VOICES OF THE LIBRARY Dear Leslie, I took advantage of the lovely white snow day to put together my notes for the Womanspace 2010 Community of Lights. The wind that came up just as we were lighting increased the challenge, but the library did it again. Thank you so much for what you and your dedicated team did. Game On This program, funded by a grant from Princeton Tour Company, invites teens and pre-teens to drop in after school on Fridays to play board games, video games, and more. The addition this year of a pingpong table added to the program’s popularity.

New to the library in 2010, the Princeton Symphony Soundtracks series gives a behind-the-scenes look into the workings of a symphony orchestra. Additionally, the library joined forces with the Arts Council of Princeton in presenting a Cinco de Mayo celebration and a community-wide Halloween parade.
Springboard
This award-winning program, which provides local students with free homework help through a grant from the Concordia Foundation, added two innovative programs in 2010. “Count Me In!” is a weeklong math camp for girls going into seventh, eighth and ninth grades. The girls learned how to use math to solve logic problems, why math matters in studies of the human body and other related topics, in a team setting. First presented in the summer, it was repeated by popular demand during the winter holidays. “The Epic and the Odyssey” prepared rising high school freshmen, who are required to read “The Odyssey,” with an in-depth exploration of the classic story using film, acting and music. The two-day program, taught by a local teacher was held twice, both times to packed audiences.
Museum Pass
A program that allows library cardholders to visit major museums in New York, Philadelphia and New Jersey, free of charge, Museum Pass was expanded in 2010 to include additional venues. Made available through funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Pierre Deux, the passes are reserved online or at the library’s Welcome Desk. Among the museums visited by cardholders this year are New York City’s American Folk Art Museum, Frick Collection, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Museum of the City of New York, the Guggenheim Museum and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan; Philadelphia’s Academy of Natural Sciences and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; and New Jersey’s Garden State Discovery Museum and Montclair Art Museum.

VOICES OF THE LIBRARY “As a child you don’t realize the dedication and hard work librarians invest into programs and education until you’re mature and can realize that they were investing into your future rather than your present. I think that the Princeton Library gave me an opportunity to succeed in life and get ahead. Even though I was a problem at times and could have easily been banned from the library, the doors were always open to give me the hope and the chance I needed to excel in school. The librarians themselves went to the end of the world to help me and other students. I believe I use that same attitude when I teach my classes as a physical education teacher.
