n a world where the pursuit of passions often takes a back seat to the daily grind, Eldwin Ruiz stands as a shining example of what it means to follow your heart. Eldwin has carved a path or himsel y nding a way to alance his driving schedule with his favorite place to be—the boxing ring. ou won’t nd ldwin donning any o ing gloves, but his love for the sport is what led him to play the crucial role of referee.

“I’ve always enjoyed combat sports and that one-on-one nature of boxing,” he says.

“I was attending a show, and they made an announcement that they were looking for officiants. started training got certi ed and worked with more seasoned officials so I could learn more about what it took to e an official re .

Beginning his refereeing career with young boxers, Eldwin fondly recalls his rst match. e even keeps a ramed picture from that day. "The kids were boxing, and I was bent over, watching them. Someone captured the moment, and I kept it on my phone. It's fun to look at," he chuckles.

Over the years, Eldwin's commitment and dedication to his hobby have earned him an international certi cation a signi cant achievement in the world o o ing refereeing. Evaluators from Ireland and Canada have assessed his skills and deemed him worthy of advancing further in his officiating career.

Eldwin's travels have taken him to beautiful places, such as Bulgaria with the Junior Olympic Team USA, where teenage athletes aspired to make their mark in boxing. Although his planned adventure to France was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic ldwin continues to officiate tournaments across the United States every six to eight weeks, thanks to his stellar reputation. e keeps his re eree gear in the truck, ready for action no matter where he is in the country.

Eldwin has been a referee for more than a decade, and he has 100% commitment to the sport's safety and fairness. Every two years he and ellow officials undergo background checks and SafeSport training.

Eldwin enjoys working with younger o ers rom all walks o li e. e’s seen kids from inner cities, Indian reservations or big metro areas all competing in tournaments with relentless determination. For him, the beauty of any sport is its ability to break down barriers, which allows kids from very diverse backgrounds to interact, learn and grow together. e emphasi es the importance o teaching young athletes the value of respect and sportsmanship. “I love the personal growth that’s developed,” he says. “I believe in sportsmanship because it promotes character. When you have character, the rest will take care of itself.”

Some of Eldwin's favorite memories as a referee include the unforgettable moments that have touched his heart. “I remember a match where two girls were boxing, and one girl went down. I gave her a count, and she got up a little wobbly but could continue. She went back to her corner, pulled it together and won the match,” he recalls. “It was one of my favorite matches because she was all heart and wanted it so much more than the other girl.”

It’s not always about winning, though, and Eldwin describes another sweet memory of watching a new young boxer entering his rst match. The o er’s dad was pacing back and forth on the sidelines while cheering for his son. “The boy didn’t win,” Edwin recalls. “But when he came out of the ring, his dad was so proud and

picked him up and put him on his shoulder.

I teared up because it was such a special and touching moment.”

So, how did all of this lead to a career with Prime? Eldwin actually began on a different trek y com ining his love o history and heart for children and completing his aster’s egree in orld istory Education. Some of his fellow teachers started driving for Uber as a side hustle because teachers are notoriously underpaid. e oined the pack and that decision is what ultimately led him to a new profession driving trucks. It not only resulted in a bigger paycheck but allowed him the freedom to pursue other interests in life including refereeing. hile trucking provides nancial stability for many, Eldwin encourages other drivers to embrace the adventure this industry offers. There’s money in trucking but there’s much more to life,” he explains.

“You can drive a truck, but you should also pursue things and hobbies you love while you're on the road. Get out when you’re in a new city! See the sights, eat new food and have new experiences.”

Despite the distinct worlds of refereeing and truck driving ldwin nds harmony in alancing oth pursuits. is love or o ing uels his dedication to officiating while truck driving offers him the reedom to e plore the world around him. is story shows the importance of pursuing one's passions and living life to the fullest, regardless of where the journey takes you.

In the air and on the ground, Juvon Allgood is a born leader.

Military History Juvon Allgood, a distinguished veteran and now a proud member of the Prime team, began his military journey in April 2002.

After building a relationship with an Army recruiter, he considered a future in the military. “I wanted a job where I didn’t get dirty,” he laughs. The movie Pushing Tin showed him the e citement o air traffic control, and inspired him to start his career in that role. Juvon's interest in aviation led him to Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, where he achieved the prestigious Air Assault Badge, which certi ed his a ility to per orm daring helicopter drops onto buildings.

As his military career advanced, Juvon ecame pro cient in reading radar scopes a crucial skill for assisting aircraft during poor weather conditions. He also became a o ile adar ir Traffic ontroller tasked with breaking the sky into manageable sections or effective communication with aircraft. Juvon practiced his trade on mountaintops, ensuring the military could maintain crucial communication even in remote areas.

After seven years in this role, he transitioned to 51 Charlie in 2009, specializing in acquisitions. His responsibilities included ordering items unavailable in the government's supply system, such as school supplies or portable toilets for deployed soldiers. Juvon also worked with organizations including FEMA and the Red Cross to help during disasters.

Prime Service Juvon's journey did not end with his military retirement in 2022. Seeking new horizons, he turned his attention to the truck-

ing industry. He knew he could make good money and build a lasting career in the eld so he started looking or a good t. uvon officially oined the rime team in April 2023.

From the moment he arrived at the company s national head uarters in Spring eld Missouri, Juvon felt a warm welcome from the staff and his ellow drivers. had a pretty cool trainer named David P. Davis.

He was on point! And my dispatcher, John Blomberg, kept me on my toes,” he says with a laugh. With dedication and a military mindset, he quickly adapted to the demands of the job.

Juvon's military background has proven invaluable in his trucking career. "A lot of things I’ve learned in the military have translated quite well into driving a truck," he remarks. The skills he acquired in risk management, route planning, reconnais-

sance and decision-making have seamlessly translated into his role as a driver. Just as he used to check in with aircrafts as a traffic controller he now maintains regular communication with his dispatcher and provides trip reports.

His appreciation for Prime’s atmosphere and the opportunity to transport goods across the country is what he loves most about his new job. "Now I'm making a lasting impact at some location somewhere," he says with pride, enjoying the chance to see the entire United States.

For those considering entering the trucking industry, Juvon advocates for having a game plan and trust in the system.

“Someone has done this before you, so always have an open mind and be willing to learn he advises. nd nally he puts his faith in God and begins trips with a prayer for wisdom, safety and grace.

TALKING BACK When life gets tough, Prime is there to lend a hand, or better yet, an ear.

FINDING PURPOSE “Bo” Hendrick had a 30-year career with Boys & Girls Clubs in North Carolina. He decided to retire and see the country from a Prime truck. Since then, this owneroperator has become active in mission work. This is his story.

hen I joined Prime, the thing I missed was kids. I missed having an impact on their lives and being able to work with them. I thought ‘What am I going to do to have some purpose?’

As a Christian, I thought I could support my church and nd purpose in that ut it’s hard to have a church when you’re on the road. Then I met the pastor of my church in Sanford, North Carolina, Caleb Villalobos, and I learned that Caleb and his wife would go to Guatemala and Costa Rica each year to help kids in need. In 2019, I started supporting their mission work.

In 2021, they said ‘Bo, you’ve got to come see these kids you are helping to support.’

So, I joined their trip in November 2021. We got presents for some 600 kids on that trip, and it really showed me the impact we were making in these communities.

We went back in the spring to Guatemala and took shoes for 850 kids. We also took 600 yo-yos. In 2023, we went back to Guatemala and took backpacks with school supplies. There was a girl with a Mickey Mouse shirt on and when I came back the following year, that girl was wearing the same shirt, but it was faded and now had holes in it. That ripped my heart out.

When we pull into the village, the children come running. The average weekly income is $15, and many of these kids are working to help support their families. These trips make a difference and ale has een doing this for 11 years now. They used to serve 500 or 600 kids, and now they are helping 850 in Guatemala and 850 in Costa Rica.

I am blessed. The poorest place in America is rich compared to the places we go to. I want to give back and there is no better way to give back to kids than this.

As Megan Hrdlicka, Prime human resources generalist explains, those visits can be in person with a health care provider or virtual. Associates can either call 1-800-865-1044 or go to AnthemEAP.com, using their Prime login.

“What’s really cool is that they do all of the research for you,” Megan says. Filters on the website help associates identify the reason they’re seeking counseling as well as n a pro i er in t eir area she explains. Whether they use the website or call for more information, an associate can expect to receive a call from an Anthem intake representative to connect with an appropriate counselor. e pro ram is con entia but Megan still hears from associates who have used the program. “People seem to really appreciate that we have something going on, especially if we know someone’s going t rou somet in i cu t she says. “This is just one more resource to help our team members. Sometimes, you need to talk to someone.”

B

y day, Nolan Skiby works in Pedigree Truck Sales in the Salt Lake Terminal. By night, he uses his spare time to create baseball bats that he either gifts to graduating high school seniors or donates to charity auctions.

He’s one of hundreds of Prime associates that give back to their community. In the past eight years, this Utah native has donated about 100 refurbished bats to raise money for school baseball programs. “It’s something I like to do to give back,” Skiby says.

It all started when his sons were boys. They are now 18 and 21, but they spent their earlier years playing baseball. Over the years, Nolan custom decorated bats for them.

Skiby would initially use colored tape to decorate the wooden bats. Sometimes, the designs changed with the holidays with red, white and blue tape for the Fourth of July.

Then Nolan’s designs progressed to painting bats. Everyone loved them.

When his oldest son started playing in high school, his team had a fundraiser and asked every parent to donate an item to be auctioned off. Nolan made two or three bats.

“To my surprise they did really well. They brought in quite a bit,” Nolan says. His Red Sox bat fetched $300 for the auction.

Nolan played baseball himself while growing up, so he was used to fundraising to cover the costs of traveling to tournaments and equipment, but he wasn’t ready for how much the sport costs today. “In my day, we didn’t travel like these teams do,” he says. “It’s expensive to maintain a field, cover tournament fees, travel costs and buy uniforms.”

When making his bats these days, Nolan stocks up on wooden bats from a vendor on Etsy. The seller makes bats for a living, but discounts ones with a scratch or blemish, and Nolan buys those in bulk. He’ll often buy 10 to 20 bats at a time, and it takes about a week to add his design.

“First, I need to sand them down, tape and cover them up, apply a coat of paint, let it dry, and repeat,” he says. “I do whatever it takes to make them look cool. It takes some time.” As Nolan’s designs expanded, it didn’t take long for his bats to become a staple at fundraising auctions.

Eventually, Nolan was asked to make custom bats for graduating seniors, and he was happy to oblige. Nolan says he has made bats for kids from four different high schools, not just where his sons went to school. When it’s a senior bat, he puts the year they graduated, a decal, the player’s name and jersey number.

“I’ve made as many as 10 or so for graduating seniors at one time. Usually, they present them at senior night and give them their gift,” he said. By now, Nolan’s sons have graduated high school, but Nolan still makes the bats. The highest grossing bats at auction were the Red Sox, a University of Utah bat and a tribute bat for Derek Jeter from the Yankees.

He chuckles when asked if he has an art background. Initially, Nolan followed bat companies online and would take note of the designs they were making. “I thought wouldn’t it be cool if I could do that and raise money for these baseball programs,” he says. “I love baseball, and I want to see these kids and their programs succeed.”

THE POWER OF FLAX This simple ingredient packs big power.

s winter approaches, adjusting our diets to the changing seasons is essential. This can be harder when making meals in your truck, but Prime’s dietician, Rachel Dreher, has tips for making eating as simple and healthy as possible while on the road.

Colder weather generally means we are less active and are likely consuming less fruit and vegetables, so it’s essential to maintain our metabolism through healthy eating. Rachel suggests adding ground flaxseed to your diet to keep your metabolism running and help with other health issues, such as diabetes and hypertension, that can be brought on by a lack of exercise and a poor diet.

“Ground flax is great for weight control. It has fiber, protein and healthy fats that slow down and regulate digestion and help with calorie control,” Rachel explains. Ground flax is not only an excellent way to boost your metabolism, but it also has fat-absorbing properties that help lower LDL cholesterol while increasing HDL cholesterol, which can help control blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.

“The best part about ground flax is that it’s shelf-stable and cost-effective,” Rachel says. It does not have to be refrigerated, and it only costs about 10 cents a serving or two tablespoons once a day. “It’s important to remember that the flax must be ground to gain all the benefits. The seeds themselves are too hard to digest,” Rachel says. This also means you don’t need anything besides a measuring spoon to incorporate flax into your diet.

Another great benefit is that it can be added to any meal without changing the flavor. So, it’s a perfect addition to your cold-weather chilis, soups, and pumpkin spice drinks. Read more for Rachel’s favorite wintertime ground flax seed recipes that are quick to make and filling.

A NEW KIND OF CUSTOMER SERVICE High-traffic areas will soon see a new kind of Prime truck on the road.

ood news—Prime is in the early phases of testing service trucks.

Why is that exciting? Well, these new service vehicles should improve customer service and help with maintenance costs. Those are big wins. To date, four service vehicles are in use and four more are being added in key markets, as Chris Holtmeyer, manager o eet maintenance e plains.

Service trucks are not a new concept for rime ut there has een a renewed effort as service shops ll to capacity and customer e pectations change. Chris says the trucks will service Prime equipment to improve reliability for customers and drivers.

To do this, these vehicles have the most advanced mobile communication and navigational packages on the market. “These service trucks will e dispatched much like our eet and have designated routes that focus our attention on the densest trailer pools,” Chris says. “The mobile communication platform, cameras and navi-

gation are units we are testing and will provide real-time information regarding progress on repairs the truck’s location and the most efficient route planning.”

Before launching this initiative, Prime looked at key areas with the most trailer traffic and maintenance spend. The company isolated those areas, purchased the trucks and recruited operators for these markets. To test this concept, Prime is targeting key drop locations where the company has the most trailers waiting to be loaded and has the most potential for needed repairs.

It will operate the test in a 150-mile radius of each based location. So far, new service trucks are being deployed to: Atlanta, Georgia; Northeast Pennsylvania; Chicago, Illinois and Liberal, Kansas.

The real driver of this test is customer service, which is more important than ever, Chris says.

The more trucks that deliver on time and in full, the better rates Prime can ask for, and the better the company’s score is with customers. On time delivery, safety and customer service is a focus of rime’s maintenance efforts.

If you haven’t seen one of the new service vehicles yet, you can’t miss them. They feature patriotic wraps and highlight veterans from Prime shops or their relatives.

“We reached out to technicians and said, ‘We want photos of you or your relatives that were in the military,’” Chris says. “That’s a cool feature.

These trucks will be out servicing our trailers, improving customer service and improving the overall experience for our operators, putting our equipment above everyone else’s.”

When did you get Opie, and how did she get her name?

Tabatha: I rescued her about six years ago, and she came with her name. She’s 1 6 years old now, and they live until they’re about 7 0!

chew toys and bird food, I make sure to get her plenty of toys. Opie loves roller dogs from fuel stops! I try to get her to eat healthier and bring her a banana, but I get dirty looks if I don’t come back with j unk food.

How long have you been on the road with her?

Tabatha: I’ve been with Prime for about two years, and as soon as I got out of training, I brought her with me.

I’ve been on the road for about a year and a half now. Birds are supposed to be with their “person” most of the time, so Prime’s pet policy lets that happen, which is great.

What was the acclimation like when Opie joined you in the truck?

Tabatha: She took to the road quickly and loved the trial run. I took out my passenger seat and put her cage in there. Opie has some muscle issues and can’t fly. But being up high, she spreads her wings out and maybe feels like she’s flying. When we’re at rest stops, I put her in the grass, and she likes to hop around and explore. She loves the fanfare and attention and really took to it right away. I thought she would be nervous about a lot of new things because some birds are really anxious, but she loves every minute of our time on the road.

How does Opie improve your life on the road?

Tabatha: She’s really good company when I’m by myself, and she helps a lot with mental health. Having her with me alleviates some loneliness and keeps me busy. We get a lot of attention, too. The shipping and receiving employees love seeing her, and she really lightens the mood.

Do you see other drivers with birds?

Tabatha: I’ve seen a couple of them.

I j ust started driving team, and the reason I did is because my co-driver has a bird in his truck, too. That was uni ue, and I figured he could give me some tips on how to care for birds on the truck.

What are the must-haves on the road with Opie?

Tabatha: I have to keep her occupied, and birds need a lot of supervision. It’s really important for birds to have something for them to chew on at all times. When I stop to restock on

Have you always been a bird person?

Tabatha: I had chickens, but I hadn’t had birds before. I soon realiz ed that all the chickens had little personalities. They know their names and have different habits and things. That’s what got me into parrots.

Any advice for other drivers who are thinking about a bird on the road?

Tabatha: Don’t get a big parrot! They are much stronger than you think. F or example, Opie can bite a padlock and chain in half! On a positive note, it really does help with mental health, and I recommend it to people who get lonely or sad on the road. Birds make great companions.

Tell us about how you and Milo got together.

Amy: She was a rescue from the humane society, and I got her when she was about 2 years old. We adopted her and another cat to be barn cats.

She was a long-term resident at the humane society, and they didn’t think she was very friendly. She was rescued off the street and had been living outside, so they thought she’d be a decent barn cat.

When did you decide Milo would good to take in the truck?

Amy: I always say that she decided for me. Milo was a barn cat for about a year. I drove my truck home and parked at the house, and she would get in the truck with me every time I loaded in and out. One day, she stowed away with me. About 45 miles down the road, I heard her meow.

We stopped at Walmart and got the essentials, and she decided she was gonna be a road cat.

Is Milo happy as a road cat?

Amy: Y es, she is extremely friendly and absolutely loves people. Most people’s cats freak out when they’re in the car, but she has a pet car seat, so she can see out. She j ust lays in the seat and watches out the window. We get a lot of funny looks when we stop and people see her in the window.

When other drivers have cats, they stare at each other out the window.

How does Milo improve your life on the road?

Amy: She has improved it a lot. It’s nice to have somebody else in the truck with you, and it helps alleviate boredom and loneliness. She thinks

she’s a person because she responds when I talk to her and seems to understand what I’m saying. I’ve been driving for 1 0 years and thought about a pet on the road, but I didn’t feel I had enough time to take care of a dog. I wondered about taking a cat but thought it might be too much trouble, but she’s so easy. She’s been on the road for four years now.

Is there a community of drivers with animals?

Amy: I’ve started to build one with a Y ouTube channel and F acebook page to share our life on the road. It’s called “Milo the Truck Cat.” I do little clips of our driving with a G oPro that uses voice commands. I have a camera that faces the road and camera facing her. I share little clips of the road that show what part of the country we’re in and a bit of what she’s doing.

Do you have any advice for other drivers who are thinking about a pet on the road?

Amy: Every pet is different, so be sure you’re adopting a pet with the right personality who’s nice and relaxed. N ot every cat is a truck cat. I wouldn’t get a kitten or a puppy because training a young animal on the road would be very hard, so maybe choose one that’s a little bit older. Be patient and pick out the right pet.

Would you recommend a pet on the road?

Amy: I don’t know if it’s for everybody, but if you’re feeling lonely and want company, I think a pet is a good thing to have with you. A pet gives you company and something to do and take care of. It can add purpose to your daily routine while driving.

Tell us about your pup, Keileigh!

Andrea: Her name is K eileigh, named after my niece, and she’s a 1 3-year-old pug, poodle and pomeranian mix. She has the best qualities of all of the breeds! I used to work at an animal shelter before I started driving, and she came into the shelter as a puppy with her mom and siblings. I took her home to try and help her heal from mange, with no plans to adopt her. But she was perfect from the getgo. She was potty trained and was a sweet old soul. I had to keep her.

What was it like when you first brought Keileigh on the road?

Andrea: I j ust started driving about three years ago. When I first started working with a trainer, I couldn’t have K eileigh with me on the road, so I left her with a good friend. I knew I wanted to get more comfortable driving before I brought her along. A few months in, I stopped to pick her up and brought her on the road. She was great at first, but then she started getting anxious. The noises from the air brakes and other things would bother her. But then, she started losing her hearing, so we tried again since the noise was the main stressor.

How does Keileigh improve your life on the road?

Andrea: She always gives me a reason to smile. I look over and smile at her, and I can talk to her, and it’s kind of like having another person to talk to. She has a very j udgmental face and will glare and side-eye from the passenger seat. When we’re not stopped for long enough or when we have to get up too early, she looks at me, sighs and lays down.

What does Keileigh enjoy having in the truck?

Andrea: She isn’t too into toys, but she does have one toy she loves to play with. It’s a little stuffed dog with a squeaker. She carries it around everywhere she goes. It’s so cute. It’s really treats that she enj oys. She eats really well. I feed her salmon, and if I’m somewhere that’s available, I give her grass-fed filet mignon steak. She also gets little supplements. I wasn’t kidding when I said she eats really well.

Do you have any advice for other drivers who are considering bringing a pet on the road?

Andrea: Don’t overdo it and get too many pets. I’ve seen people with two or three, but that’s too much. Prime has a limit on the number of pets you can bring, and that’s a good thing. I’d also say to get an older dog that’s good with people, and it’s a plus if they don’t shed! If you do decide to get a dog, bring a brush, and make sure you brush them frequently. It helps to limit the amount of pet hair in your truck and bedding. A calm dog is also good because, drivers often have an irregular sleep schedule. That can be tough if you have an energetic dog that always wants to get out. It can make it hard to sleep.

Do you think having a senior dog has made it easier to bring Keileigh on the road?

Andrea: If other drivers ask, I would highly recommend an older dog that’s hard of hearing. She sleeps and is peaceful and chill. Sometimes when I’m driving in cra y traffic, I look over, and she’s j ust lying there like she’s on a beach. That calms me down.

Tell us about how you ended up with Jack.

Olga: I got him 1 0 years ago. I saw a post on Craigslist by a lady in Seattle who flew to California and pulled four puppies from a high-kill shelter. Jack was on death row and only had a few hours to live. He was only a couple of months old. When I saw his face, he was a tiny, little puppy with old man eyes. I said right then, he’s mine. He’s super-smart, full of energy and personality, and always happy.

What made you start bringing Jack on the road?

Olga: After I finished my training and got my own truck, I went home and grabbed him. He was so happy because I hadn’t seen him throughout my entire training. N ow he lays on the passenger seat, lays his head on the armrest and looks out the window.

He’s the most content dog.

Do you talk to Jack in the truck?

Olga: Yes, I talk to him, and he understands two languages because my first language is Russian. Somehow he learned to understand Russian and English. I don’t know how. But when I talk to my mom in Russian, he understands when I say goodbye and gets excited.

How does Jack improve your life on the road?

Olga: He’s a handful, and he’s got a bigger-than-life personality stuffed into a tiny body. He keeps me busy!

We go for long walks and try to stay healthy on the road. He enjoys the walks, and it benefits me as well. He notifies me if something is going on outside the truck. He snuggles up with me at night, and it’s nice to have

that companion on the road. It helps my mental health. The solitude of the job can get to you, and to have a dog or any kind of pet provides that interaction with another living being.

Do you see other pets?

Olga: There are a lot of drivers with dogs and cats and birds. I’ve seen a driver with a pet duck. I love to stop and talk to the drivers and ask permission to say hello to their pets. It’s always a great feeling and really fun to see how many companions drivers have over the road.

What’s one must-have on the road with Jack?

Olga: He’s never been into toys. I would buy him toys, and he’d be excited for 5 minutes, and then he’d forget about them. When I rescued him, he was skin and bones and was starving to death. It took a long time to get him to recover to a healthy weight. He was also scared of everything, even his own shadow. It took a long time to build his confidence and for his personality to come out. Because he started his life in starvation, he’s obsessed with food. I have to be careful he doesn’t get into my food.

Do you have any advice for drivers thinking about bringing a pet on the road?

Olga: The only advice I’d offer is to have some kind of crate. When Jack got sick to his stomach, it was easier and safer to be inside the crate. If I’m driving in bad weather, I put him in his crate for his own safety. With a new pet, you don’t know how they’re going to react, so it’s always a good idea to have a crate in your truck until you know for sure how they’ll react.

During his last nine months of driving in as a regional driver or rime’s intermodal division Travis ought a house near Salt ake ity.

Soon he wanted more time at home to work on pro ects. The ollowing year Travis ecame a manager himsel rst as a T eet manager in training with si eets. ow he is responsi le or to trucks.

T

im Hicks knows he’s had an exciting life so far. “I’ve gotten to do a lot of things most people don’t get to do,” the 56-yearold lead CDL examiner says. Part of his adventures took place on the road while he was a driver, and others took place on the trails.

Before Tim began driving for Prime in 2011, he built trails for the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

As an emergency medical technician, he also rescued hikers lost in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Then, after getting in ured while hotshotting wild res Tim worked as a prison counselor until state budget cuts eliminated his job, causing Tim his own budget crisis.

That’s when a neighbor who drove a truck encouraged him to retrain to earn his Commercial Driver’s License.

Eventually, Prime trucks caught his attention. “I started seeing some of these really cool, clean Prime trucks at the stops,” Tim says. After learning he could earn more with Prime and drive solo, Tim joined the team and started making new plans. “I started coming out o the nancial hole had gotten myself into,” he says. “That extra 40% I could earn at rime made a difference.

Driving also proved to be less stress ul than putting out res or counseling prisoners. “When I became a driver, one of the best things about that was just being out there on your own and just needing to worry about yourself and your load, and getting it run safely and on time.”

After seven years of driving, Tim decided it was time for a change, so he became a CDL trainer at the Salt Lake City terminal, then an examiner. “I enjoy contributing and serving others, and I wanted to kind of give back what Prime had given me,” he says. As lead examiner, Tim says he’s known for fairness and consistency. He follows the training manual closely because he sees his role as “protecting the motoring public,” and that starts with training.

“I think what I do is extremely important,” he says. “I really believe that safety begins right here, where drivers get their license.”

The Pittston, Pennsylvania, terminal is now home to a Cardinal Sleep Lab much like Prime’s other main terminals in Springfield, Missouri, and Salt Lake City, Utah. According to Heather Moenkoff, the director of the sleep apnea program at Prime, this is excellent news because “this is something we’ve been needing for a long time. It means that East Coast drivers will no longer have to travel to Springfield or miss time on the road to make appointments with outside labs to participate in a sleep study or get supplies for their CPAP machines.”

While Prime has been screening drivers for sleep apnea since 2008, the Cardinal Sleep Lab opened at the Springfield terminal over eight years ago and has been in Salt Lake City for two, so the obvious next step was to get one open in Pittston, explains Heather. The new lab opened in October and offers two individual labs for the studies to take place. The only thing a driver needs to make an appointment is a referral from the Department of Transportation or their personal physician. Once they have a referral, they can make an appointment at the lab by calling the terminal or the lab directly.

Before the Pittston sleep lab, drivers in the area would have to wait 30 to 90 days

or be routed to Springfield to get a sleep study done, which meant time off the road. “Taking time off the road costs drivers money, so we aim to get the studies done as quickly as possible to save drivers both time and money,” Heather says.

Most sleep studies can be scheduled and performed right away, which means the driver can wrap up the study and get the results within 24 hours.

Sleep studies aren’t the only service the lab will offer. It can also help set up telemedicine appointments, assist with warranty issues and re-supply CPAP machines without waiting since it will keep supplies on hand. Heather expects the sleep lab to stay busy, “I think this will be an essential resource for East Coast drivers,” she says.

“Sleep apnea treatment is vital for drivers because it can affect focus and reflexes, so we are excited to be able to offer these services more conveniently.”

If you feel like you might be at risk for sleep apnea, Heather says you must be your own advocate. “People with high blood pressure and diabetes are at a higher risk for sleep apnea, but it can also be genetic,” she says. “If you notice daytime sleepiness, general fatigue or a change in sleep habits, you should get tested for sleep apnea.”

lot of life’s biggest memories have happened on the road for Refrigerated Division owner-operator, Matthew Keen— from a childhood motorcycle trip with his father to a family road trip across the country to his oldest daughter calling to ask him to formally adopt her.

When Matthew heads out from his home base of Windsor, Georgia., his wife, Stephanie, holds down the fort for their two

children, Kaylon, 19, and Dalton, 14. “I miss the small things,” says Matthew, who has driven for Prime since 2009. “The hugs.

The scrapes and bruises. The bandaids.

Seeing them every day. The small stuff really adds up.”

While Matthew was talking on the phone with Stephanie every day, his conversations with his children were less frequent and not as substantial. Questions like, ‘How was your day?’ would get oneword answers. “We didn’t really talk,” he says. “So one night, we did prayers together. Then we did them again the next night and the next night.” Before they knew it, the 9 o’clock phone call was a tradition that’s been a constant in the Keen family for nearly eight years.

“Time gets away from you on the road,” he says. “Your kids grow up overnight it seems. This gave us some consistency.”

Beyond their evening phone call, the Keen family has also picked up gaming. Everyone enjoys playing Mario Kart to stay connected. These little touch points during the day help everyone feel more together, even when Matthew is doing West Coast hauls

for a month or more at a time. But those extended trips give him lots of scenery to enjoy and daydream about bringing his family along.

“Traveling around the country and seeing things is great, but I want to experience this with my family,” Matthew says. With that goal in mind, Matthew started bringing his son Datlon out on the road as soon as he turned 3. Now, Dalton joins Mathrew in the truck each summer when the father and son get weeks of quality time together on the open road.

The time with Dalton is extra special for Matthew, who got to take a similar trip with his dad. As a child, Matthew and his father, Jimmy Keen, a former Prime Driver, took a motorcycle trip up the East Coast to Niagara Falls. “That was the pinnacle of my childhood, and I wanted to have that experience with my children,” he says.

So far, Matthew has been able to bring along Stephanie and their kids and take the family to 17 major landmarks that aligned with load pick-ups and drop-offs. They’ve visited many of the must-see spots including the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore and, of course, Niagara Falls.

Program Rules: The person that is referred must run under Prime’s operating authority (A, B, C, or D Seats) as a company driver or independent contractor.

All active Prime Driver Associates under Prime’s operating authority (A, B, and C Seats) are eligible to receive Prime Inc Driver Referral Program pay.

To earn bonus at 6 months longevity pay and mileage pay, referred driver must be an A Seat.

No driver referral bonus will be earned for referring a rehire (previous Prime Driver).

To earn referral, referred driver must list Prime Driver’s name or driver code on online application or be provided to Recruiter prior to processing application for approval.
