with Dr Geoff Newcombe Chief Executive of the Association of Independent Schools of NSW What can you tell me about the Association of Independent Schools of NSW (AISNSW)?

The association was established in 1967 by a group of independent schools that understood the benefits of working together on the numerous things they had in common. As the peak body for independent schools in NSW, the association’s main functions include the provision of high quality support and services to its members and advocating for independent schools to governments and the community. AISNSW also works closely with the government and Catholic school sectors on a wide range of education matters.

What services does AISNSW provide and how are these funded?

AISNSW provides a wide range of services to member schools such as professional learning for teachers and school leaders, advice and assistance in employment relations, compliance, governance, child protection, teacher accreditation, educational research and data services, school registration and assistance in the education of students with additional needs. These are funded largely through member subscriptions and fees for some services.

How did you personally come to be involved and can you describe a typical day at AISNSW? I was a science and maths teacher before becoming a bursar and Head in a number of independent schools. In the late 1990s I accepted a position with the association where I had oversight of school governance and industrial relations services, then was appointed executive director (now chief executive) in 2005. My typical day involves an early start, internal meetings with staff, external meetings with key stakeholders, liaising with government and politicians at the state and federal level to represent the needs of the sector, and working with principals and members of school boards. My role also involves a considerable amount of travel within NSW and interstate.

How does NSW’s independent school sector look?

There are more than 480 independent schools in NSW enrolling over 200,000 students which reflect the full diversity of the community. These schools serve low to high socio-economic communities, cater for many different faith backgrounds and educational philosophies, and vary greatly in size from very small country schools to large metropolitan schools.

Almost half the independent schools in NSW enrol fewer than 200 students and 70 per cent charge tuition fees of less than $10,000 per year. Currently, NSW is experiencing very high levels of population growth and there are significant challenges for the sector in providing the educational infrastructure needed to accommodate the additional students.

The sector continues to perform well academically while also maintaining a strong focus on pastoral care and ensuring students are given the opportunity to achieve their potential.

Why do people tend to choose independent schools when considering their options?

School choice surveys consistently show that parents are looking for a school that provides a good level of behavioural and academic discipline, offers high quality teaching and learning and is a good fit for their child in terms of academic ability and interests.

Finding a school with a strong focus on pastoral care and where the values align closely with those of the family are also important considerations, as well as having a good choice of extra-curricular activities such as sport, music or arts.

If a new parent asked you for advice on choosing the best school for their child, how would you respond?

The single most important consideration is that the school is able to meet the child’s individual needs.

Parents should list the essential things they’re looking for in a school, based on what they feel offers the best environment for their child. This process should also take into account things such as school size, location, cost and how closely the school’s values align with those of the family. You can then identify schools that best satisfy your criteria, narrow down

the options and arrange to visit each school under consideration. Ask to meet the principal, attend an open day and speak to other parents with children at the school.

What are the things that have the most impact on your work?

School education is an area of constant change because of political, academic and social influences and the critical role education plays in society. As a result, any decisions made by governments that involve school funding, curriculum, the teaching profession and the welfare of children, to name just a few, have a direct and often sustained impact on the work of the association as we seek to support member schools to deliver high quality education services. Increasingly we’re seeing an impact on our work from having a more globalised perspective on education and understanding what we need in order to continually improve our model of schooling. We need to make sure we know what the rest of the world is doing, identify what we can learn, adapt and implement from other systems and methods, and look to drive innovation and creativity in the classroom and beyond. Our role is to not only deliver services focused on what our members ask for, but we also need to reduce or smooth out the impacts of all manner of changes in our education practices.

Does AISNSW have any significant events planned for 2019?

In the first five months there will be a state and federal election, with a change of government quite possible in both cases. Inevitably that will result in changes of some description, including potential changes of ministers along with different perspectives on a range of policy areas in education. In NSW the government will release a report on its review of the curriculum which promises to stir up the existing school framework, plus the Commonwealth Government will settle the processes for calculating funding of nongovernment schools based on the personal income tax records of parents whose children attend a nongovernment school. These events have the potential to create massive change in the sector.

In New South Wales, the independent and Catholic school sectors offer parents a huge choice for their children, with more than 200,000 students currently enrolled in nongovernment schools. This magazine is your comprehensive guide to these schools and the broad range of learning options they provide. To help you make the right choices for your child’s education, we have spoken to some of the state’s top educators and compiled information about a range of leading academic institutions.

With hundreds of private schools in Sydney alone, knowing where to start can be difficult for many parents. It is important to be organised in advance to ensure the selection process is as smooth as can be. Your child’s schooling is vital to their future and selecting the right school is a decision that shouldn’t be rushed.

To help with your decision-making process, we have compiled a list of factors to consider.

Open Days and School Visits Most schools hold at least one open day per year where you will be able to chat with the principal or headmaster, teachers, students, as well as other parents and prospective parents.

Talk to Your Child Before you go out to ask questions and obtain information on various schools, you first need to study your own child.

When you consider the personality traits, strengths

Many schools also offer opportunities for parents to visit during regular school hours. Although much of the information you need in order to make a decision can be found online or in brochures, there are some things, such as playground facilities that you may like to see in person.

School Management and Facilities Do you get a sense that the school focuses on the future? Consider the vision that the school has for its future and whether it seems well managed. See what the principal or headmaster is like. Are they respected by the school community? Do they have good people management skills?

Also look at the school’s rules. Are they clearly stated, positive and well enforced? Are students encouraged to become involved in leading the school? Are parents encouraged to get involved in helping to develop school policies? What role does the school play in the local community?

What unique facilities and resources does the school possess? Are before or after-school

RIGHT School programs available? In what ways is technology used within the classroom? Is the school currently investing in new facilities that will be in use during your child’s education? Does the school offer external campuses or a sister school? What is the school’s computer policy?

Teachers and Teaching

The Curriculum and Extra-Curricular Activities As Australia’s population becomes increasingly diverse, technologies more sophisticated and the demands of the workplace more complex, independent schools are supplementing the national curriculum framework in a number of different ways.

Does the staff comprise of committed and effective teachers? Examine teacher-student relationships.

Is there genuine warmth and respect between teachers and students?

Your first step is to consider the finer points of a school’s curriculum and the skills that its graduates are known for, and whether or not these are in line with your own child’s unique strengths and interests.

Look at the school’s teaching methods and determine whether these are aligned to your child’s talents, strengths and interests. Do the teachers use different types of learning strategies (e.g. auditory, visual and tactile/kinaesthetic) in order to allow the children to maximise their learning-style strengths?

You may also like to consider whether co-curricular activities will fit easily into your family’s routine. Do you want your child to have access to community initiatives or overseas travel? Will the school encourage parents to get involved in school excursions? What languages are offered by the school?

If your child has special learning needs, do you need a school with a remedial education program? Does the school provide integration aides and other allied specialists (e.g. speech pathologists, language and literacy experts)?

Academic Performance and Student Life Look at the admission and selection criteria of the school, and whether there are particular subjects where it records its best results. How does it rank against other schools in the area?

Does the school tend to channel children into academic or vocational streams? What are the school’s policies regarding gifted or special needs children? What are the advantages of the school’s size? What are the class sizes? Is there a maximum number of students allowed in each class? Is the school co-ed or single sex? If co-ed, what is the gender balance of classes? How multicultural is the school?

School Values Are the school’s religious and philosophical outlooks and practices the same as your own? How are morals and ethics taught within the school? How do teachers handle bullying? What is the school’s disciplinary policy? Is there a counsellor or nurse on-site?

Two-Way Communication When it comes to making decisions, how do teachers interact with parents and students to get them involved? How will your child’s progress and assessment be reported to you? Is there a Parent Teacher Association? How many parents are active? Does the school rely on only the teacher for delivering lesson plans and homework or is there also a website or some such communication that enables students, and perhaps their parents, to access lesson plans, progress reports and homework tasks?

Costs Does the school offer financial assistance in the form of scholarships or bursaries and could your child qualify? Besides tuition fees, are there other course-related costs or extra-curricular costs that you may need to consider? Does the school facilitate a car-pooling program? Is the school’s location accessible by frequent public transport?

Are there safe cycling roads on your route to the school?

Remember, IT’S UP TO YOU The ‘best’ school for your child is generally the one that provides them with a sound education and an environment in which to become a creative, reflective and critical thinker, make friends, feel safe and thrive. The right school is the one that is the right fit for your child. It may not necessarily be the right fit for another child.

It is only when you are armed with knowledge that you can go forth and make an informed and confident choice.

PRINCIPALLY Phillip Heath AM, Head of Barker College in Sydney, speaks with WhichSchool? Magazine about how the school is preparing its students for the world of tomorrow.

How does the school’s philosophy and ethos guide it today?

Philosophy and ethos is central to creating a school’s culture; and culture is that which occurs without anybody imposing or forcing an attitude of mind or behaviour. Culture is the atmosphere, it is the climate, it’s the air you breathe, and ethos expresses itself in the culture. You need to know what you believe and believe in a sense of purpose in the school in order to create a culture. And the same is true for the reverse. If you wish to reform or shift a culture, you have to start with ethos and belief. This is the starting point for a school’s identity.

How does Barker College differ from other schools?

Most schools do things mostly the same, most of the time. All revert back to that because it’s safe.

The literature says about 80 per cent of what all schools do is the same. Schools should search out the 20 per cent of what makes them unique.

We are blessed in this country to have so many great schools. The purpose, heritage and intent of these schools often resembles each other, so parents would want to find the point of difference.

There are two distinct differences at Barker College.

One is that it’s a school that deliberately and intentionally allows people to thrive in a holistic sense – emotionally, physiologically, physically and academically. It’s about all of those things that form together to make a fully formed human being.

The second thing is that we have a firm coeducational identity and a firm expression of that.

It’s a view that everybody can find a place and thrive irrespective of interests, skillset or capacity and be committed to doing that in a way that brings young men and young women together for the proper expression of human interaction and identity.

young people with the capacity to engage with other communities. Our view is an ethos that brings diverse and divergent views together and expresses a desire to be involved in other communities different to our own.

A knowledge-rich curriculum that promotes deeper thinking is at the heart of the Barker curriculum.

In what ways has Barker College evolved since you joined the school in 2014?

Building on nearly 130 years of heritage, the school has grown in two areas. Firstly, there is our Indigenous education outreach program, which goes beyond boarding and into establishing Aboriginal schools in partnership with Aboriginal community leaders. The second is in our emphatic commitment to a full co-educational experience for our students. Neither of these two things was in place before 2014 and they are here now. They have been added intentionally and explicitly.

I also like to think that the things that were already in place have been supported and enhanced.

We note that our graduates will probably still be in the workforce in 2080, maybe even longer, and will likely still be alive in the 22nd century. So we need to think well beyond a 21st century education.

How do you provide support and leadership to your staff?

Empowerment is really important and sitting alongside empowerment is the empowerment to fulfil your own personal contribution to delivering the school’s ethos. Barker College is blessed enough to have people who want to work here, who choose to be here. We tell them to come and teach beautifully but to also contribute to this ethos and do it holistically and also grow in the process. Therefore my role is to provide a shelter or safe experience for our staff to do exactly that – to provide a framework, resource them, encourage them, support them and then stand back and watch as they do it.

What role do you play in the day-to-day activities of the students?

I’m a cheer squad for the students. I love to watch and know and enthuse in what they are doing. I visit them on their birthdays and I like to watch their performances, sports, concerts and addresses.

It’s very important for me to exercise cultural and symbolic leadership through a presence, through being there to watch them and engage purposefully and knowledgably about what they are doing.

I want my office to be a place of hope, healing, grace, fulfilment and encouragement; rather than a place of restitution and sentencing.

My whole room and everything it stands for should express what the school’s values are all about. I am fully aware of that and feel the weight of that everyday. My relationship and rapport with students should always be dignified with respect and enthusiasm.

SPEAKING...

What are some of the more critical issues faced by educators in the independent school sector today?

There are significant identity questions emerging about our young people, largely informed by technology and its impact on the psyche. We are living in a society of outrage, where many of the messages we receive are negative and cast doubt on the trustworthiness of institutions.

We are also in an age of uncertainty. No longer are we preparing young men and women for a predictable life. The more we equip them to see the new normal, which is about volatility and uncertainty, the better we will be doing for our students.

Educating for character, resilience, the capacity to believe in self sufficiency, to keep trying new things and the ability to endure disappointment and doubt will be just as important as the ATAR score – and possibly even more so.

The best predictor of a student’s happiness and fulfilment in life is not their ATAR, it’s actually their character, and their ability to exercise emotional restraint and self care.

Head of Barker College, Mr Phillip Heath AM, is a regular visitor to the classrooms from Pre-K to Year 12.

This is something that schools don’t measure.

The reason we don’t measure it is because it is too hard to measure, but it’s right at the heart of what education is about. All of that leads to a very profound set of challenges that schools are facing and I think that is going to escalate in the future.

Can you describe any specific ways in which the digital era is beginning to disrupt the education field?

There are several: the immediacy of information as opposed to knowledge, the tractional nature of knowledge, and the distractions that arise from the permeation of technology.

There is also the saturation of handheld devices and the need to work across quite different modalities about communication and expression – moving from screen to page, image and moving image to spoken word – and we’re requiring all of this from students to understand how knowledge is communicated.

We’re living in a very bespoke information world where our newsfeed frames itself around what you’re interested in. The education system is still essentially a 19th century construct with some 20th century updates, but the world doesn’t look like that anymore.

Barker has one of the largest school music programs in Australia and students across the school are engaged in a wide-ranging co-curricular and classroom music program.

In Hollywood there is much talk about how Netflix is changing the industry. In the past, we had to wait for a series to be aired and would watch it when it was televised. Now, we are able to download an entire series at once. And this is happening in schools too. Whole courses can now be downloaded, so knowledge can

Principally Speaking... be transmitted in huge dumps, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is understood. So how does this impact on how the school curriculum is taught?

Gaming which was once seen as a distraction is now being incorporated into the curriculum. It is being seen as less of a distraction and more of a tool for learning about things like coding. There is a significant shift going on and we are still beginning to understand it.

People want things when they need it, but what does that mean for school timetables going forward?

These are very exciting times if we have the courage to see them so.

What are your feelings about NAPLAN and its effectiveness?

NAPLAN carries an important place that provides important feedback and serves as a diagnostic instrument. If we were to shut it down, we should replace it with something equivalent as quickly as possible. While NAPLAN continues to provide evidence of progress, it has its place.

I am broadly supportive of NAPLAN, but I am not supportive of the politicisation of NAPLAN or the granulated approach to data, which enables comparisons that are not entirely healthy and causes competition between schools.

Barker has one of the largest cohorts of students studying Agriculture.

Through the Big Sister and Big Brother program, senior students spend time in the classroom with Barker’s youngest students.

“No longer are we preparing young men and women for a predictable life. The more we equip them to see the new normal, which is about volatility and uncertainty, the better we will be doing for our students.”

But with that said, I think we can manage those morbidities without underestimating the merit of the NAPLAN testing system.

What has been your most memorable moment either as a teacher or specifically in the role of principal?

It’s always about the students, about the change in the life of a student, and that has happened with so much frequency. I’m constantly staggered by the raw capacity of growth, the growth in the life of a person.

There are so many cases to mention, cases where a life has been touched or transformed in some way, where a student has recovered from illness and achieved great results, where a student learns something they never thought they could do, or stared down their own barrel of self-doubt, or overcome moments of despair, or was on a destructive path but has reformed.

There have been students who should have been shown the door but were given another chance.

There have been times where these students have gone on to achieve great things beyond school, where we have both been in tears about what they have achieved.

A personal one for me is the fulfilment of being involved with Aboriginal families and how much I’ve learned from them about what it is to be human.

What traits make for an effective and successful leader in education today?

Beyond all else, it’s love. As simplistic as it sounds, it’s love that adds to all of the other skills – the administrative tasks, acumen, determination, drive and grit really aren’t worth anything if love is not present.

As a leader, you have to love the students, the staff and the life of everybody in your community or else it becomes merely a role to play.

There’s a lot in all of that, but at the end of the day, for me, love is the decisive thing. ENTERPRISE By 2030, a significant number of Australian workers will be in jobs and roles we have not even dreamed of yet. So how do Australian schools prepare today’s students for the unknown workforce of tomorrow? St Andrew’s Cathedral School discusses how innovation and enterprise is embedded into the curriculum.

Head of St Andrew’s Cathedral School (SACS), Dr John Collier, says new and emerging technologies, along with significant changes in society, are forcing schools to re-think what and how they teach students.

“The future world for which we are attempting to prepare students increasingly requires enterprise thinking and an innovation mindset. This being

the case, we want to equip our students, while at school, for their employment futures,” he says.

“Modern education places an increasing premium on student thinking, including that which is enterprising and innovative in nature.”

the creation of the new Innovation and Enterprise portfolio led by Mrs Corinna Bailey. This exciting initiative has seen SACS grow its connections with neighbouring universities, along with entrepreneurs and businesses, in an effort to be at the forefront of emerging trends in the workforce.

To this end, enterprise thinking has been embedded across the school, primarily through

“Enterprise and innovation involves going out into the city and bringing the city into the school. It involves design thinking, advanced technology and interdisciplinary thinking,” he explains. “It also includes and subsumes STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). This is an exciting initiative for our school, which we hope will become distinctive as we try to position our students to their future advantage.”

The Director of Innovation and Enterprise, Mrs Bailey, adds that the school aims to enhance and embed thinking and enterprise skill development in the existing curriculum and to also form external partnerships which bridge the divide between education and the workforce.

“We are moving away from a knowledge economy into a time where preparing students for the future requires us to equip them with a diverse skillset transferable across discipline areas. While universities are starting think labs and incubators, there has been a gap for students at junior and high school level to extend themselves in this way.

“We now have a greater focus on embedding thinking skills through design thinking and enterprise skills in the inquiry process of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme and our NESA syllabus,” she reveals.

The highlight of the innovation and enterprise push in 2018 was StartUp, an intensive six-week entrepreneurial journey for students willing to take a risk and try something new.

More than 15 small groups of students from Years 5 to 11 worked with leading innovators and entrepreneurs to turn their fledgling idea into a business. Parents, alumni and industry professionals were all too willing to mentor students and share their expertise.

“It was an amazing process in which many of our Old Andreans, along with parents and industry professionals with experience in the start-up space, came together to share their passion and expertise with students,” Mrs Bailey explains. “Each group of students was allocated a mentor for the duration of the program and we held five workshops, with each workshop having a different focus. The StartUp Finale in September saw three finalists presenting their pitch to our judges, with our other entrants displayed in our entrepreneur gallery.”

The SACS Entrepreneurs of the Year were Year 10 students Harry Carson, Tom Eizenberg and Keziah Bailey, who developed a slotted timber balance bike that is designed to grow with the rider in their fundamental years.

Harry says he was thrilled with the result. “It was really exciting. I think along the way I’ve learnt a lot about leadership and how to pitch applications. The program was definitely helpful.”

Finn Cole, who was part of the team that designed a digital globe that displays the world as it currently is and used to be using 3D LED fan technology adds, “I’ve loved being able to communicate and engage with people who really know what they’re doing and who are working in the startup and entrepreneurial space. Being able to learn from people who are already doing this stuff was really useful.”

One of the StartUp judges, Dr Anna Wright, founder of start-up Bindimaps, says she was impressed with the passion of the students and saw great value in the journey of discovery they underwent.

“The process of talking about how to validate and pivot ideas, how to build small and test ideas are all valuable steps for students to explore, no matter what kind of job they end up doing,” she explains.

“I loved that the students weren’t confined to ‘what is possible’ but rather used their imagination to see

how they could make the world a better place. Many adults jump straight to a solution after finding the idea, rather than living in the idea or problem long enough to really identify and quantify the next step.”

For Mrs Bailey, StartUp is just the beginning.

“I’m building networks and forming partnerships with industry, universities and experts around entrepreneurial activity in order to bridge the divide between school and the real world. This will enable us to show our young entrepreneurs the relevance of our diverse offering of subjects and how they create pathways to a broad range of careers.”

Moriah College offers a number of programs to foster entrepreneurial thinking in students. Here, we take an in-depth look at three such programs.

Moriahpreneur Now in its third year, Moriah’s very own ‘Shark Tank’ aims to encourage innovation and develop a business-savvy mind. As part of the Year 10 Commerce unit Running a Business, students form teams to come up with an exciting new business idea and pitch it to an independent panel of judges for a $100,000 investment.

LaunchX is an American organisation that provides entrepreneurial high school students with real-world business experience by supporting and assisting them in creating their own start-up companies in just six months.

Students in Years 9 to 12 at Moriah College have formed teams that will design, develop and build their own fully-functioning businesses.

Recent Moriah graduates, Zac and Jake Wein, initiated the club.

This inquiry-based learning task allows students to develop their problem-solving skills and creativity, covering all aspects of business management – from marketing and financial planning to building business ideas and setting vision goals.

“LaunchX provides us with a course structure to go through and certain requirements and objectives to meet each week so that our teams can stay on target and grow their businesses in the right way,” says Jake.

Each team submits a report and presents it to a judging panel, with parents also invited to attend.

Prizes are awarded for Most Innovative Idea, Best Financial Plan and Best Presentation.

“The great thing is that age is not an issue,” Zac adds. “It’s about your passion for entrepreneurship and whether you think you can take on the responsibility and have the right skills to succeed.”

“Entrepreneurial skills such as resilience, focus, self-reliance, drive, and innovation, to name a few, are not just skills relevant to commerce but are skills essential for life. Currently, Moriah’s MIT LaunchX Club is an opt-in for students in Years 9 to 12. It runs a course giving students the tools and mindset to start real companies. I will work to introduce entrepreneurial programs like LaunchX to all high school students at Moriah, and my goal is to extend this initiative and develop a synthesised introductory entrepreneurship program in the primary school, promoting innovation from the get go. Finally, I intend to establish an ‘Entrepreneurship Club’. The club would provide speakers, resources and online courses and, more importantly, a thoughtgenerating platform.”

Each year, five students are awarded an allexpenses paid trip to Israel to visit leading Israeli start-ups and entrepreneurs.

The program sets ambitious goals for students in Year 11, who have to pitch ideas for life-changing start-up businesses that will have a positive impact on society in order to win one of the five soughtafter spots.

The objective is to encourage students to think globally, to have a social conscience and to believe that they can make a positive difference in people’s lives.

To be selected in the entrepreneur program, students undertake a challenging application process where they have to come up with an innovative idea, develop a professional pitch and present it to a panel of leading Sydney business figures and chair of the Moriah Foundation.

This incredible opportunity also allows students to make a connection between the real world and what they learn in the classroom. Students visit start-ups, think tanks and big players in the technology sector to see first-hand the kind of selfless entrepreneurial thinking Moriah College hopes to inspire in them.

TEACHING ROBOTS TO BOWL An inspiring partnership with the CSIRO provides girls with twice-weekly access to some of Australia’s best scientific minds at Ravenswood School for Girls, where almost 50 per cent of graduates from the Class of 2018 are now studying towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) degrees.

Developing a love of STEM in girls is crucial to increasing female representation in STEM related fields.

But, can a machine learn? Can a robot be called intelligent? And, what is artificial intelligence?

These are just a few of the questions posed to Year 6 students at Ravenswood School for Girls in their compulsory STEM lessons.

The school has been in partnership with the CSIRO through its STEM Professionals in Schools program, for almost six years.

“Our teachers work alongside professional scientists, mathematicians and engineers to bring real STEM projects into the classroom,” says Ravenswood Principal, Mrs Anne Johnstone.

One such professional is Dr Joshua Ho, an expert in bioinformatics at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute. Bioinformatics uses programming to study and understand biological data.

Dr Ho uses his skills to help solve the problem of heart defects in babies. Through his lessons he introduces students to some challenging concepts including machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI).

Why teach 12 year olds such concepts? Well, big ideas such as AI are changing the way we live and are helping shape a new future where many of today’s jobs will be lost to automation and robots.

Young minds are the perfect audience to tackle such topics because they ask questions, they wonder, and are not afraid to try new things.

Dr Ho uses his expertise in cardiac health and computer programming to teach students how to make a heart rate monitor and used facial recognition technology as an example of how AI is used in the real world.

to build a robot that could learn and master a new skill, and coded a robot to play a game where it had to guess a number between 1 and 100.

Through trial, error, and feedback the robot was able to learn from its mistakes and correctly guess the students’ number after just a few tries.

Students also designed a bowling robot that could learn how to bowl the perfect ball every time.

Students loved these challenges as they allowed them to work collaboratively on hands-on projects that are playful and creative.

STEM learning can begin in kindergarten, where students start to develop a ‘maker’ mindset and develop coding skills using creative ‘playground’ style resources such as Scratch Jr. In Year 5, Ravenswood students used the design thinking framework to design and make something useful for astronauts on the International Space Station. European Space Agency engineer Andrea Boyd helped the girls develop empathy for the astronauts and answered their searching space questions.

Students worked in small groups to identify a problem, design and then make a prototype solution. Through this student-centred approach to learning, students were empowered to pursue their own ideas, work collaboratively and use a range of skills to develop a meaningful artefact with a real-world purpose.

As part of a class project, six Year 6 Emanuel School students took on the challenge of changing the statistics of women in STEAM fields, starting with shaping the minds of primary students at the school. Under the guidance of Emanuel School’s Primary Innovation Leader, Sophie Poisel, they researched and learnt about the United Nations Development Goals.

The students then entered the Tech Girls are Superheroes competition, where they used design thinking to determine a problem in their community and develop a solution that involved a business plan, app development and connecting them with mentors in the field.

The girls designed a team of six superheroes, the STEAMA 6 (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics and Astronomy). Together, these heroes would fight for gender equality in leadership roles in STEAM fields. The STEAMA 6 was awarded first place in the competition, receiving perfect scores from all three judges for many of the areas examined.

“The rigour of this competition extended our students thinking beyond the curriculum and across disciplines,” says Ms Poisel. “It was wonderful to see how the students identified a real-world problem and created a context specific solution that developed the dispositions and skills they need now and in the future, such as empathy, collaboration, communication and citizenship. It was also interesting to see how an empathy-fuelled experience developed the students’ interests in technology.”

Emanuel School’s Imaginarium and Design Lab in the new Innovation Centre provide students, teachers and community members with a space to develop their capacity to find problems and the skills to develop solutions. Primary students, for example, were given the opportunity to develop the layout of the new Imaginarium and provide recommendations on how the space should be designed, equipped and used. Many of these designs are currently being built for the students to use in the room.

In Years K-6, class programs provide opportunities that foster computational thinking such as learning computer science and coding.

The skills for app and web development, robotics and electronics are explored with opportunities to tinker and learn beyond the curriculum in the Imaginarium.

Year 7 and 8 students recently took part in Emanuel School’s first STEAM days.

Year 7 and 8 students participated in Emanuel School’s first STEAM days. These two days were unique opportunities to undertake engaging and dynamic challenges that explore focused knowledge and skillsets in a projectbased format. Year 7 students and expert teachers worked with Melissa Silk and Annette Mauer from STEAMpop to generate striking paper and light-based sculptures constructed using mathematical concepts around tessellation and pattern. These sculptures were then installed by students and presented to the school community as an aid to commemorate the pogrom against Jews in 1938 – Kristallnacht – the Night of the Broken Glass.

As a K-12 initiative, teaching staff have collaborated to examine and develop the dispositions that characterise members of our learning community, sharpening the focus on our learners’ soft skills and competencies.

According to the NSW Department of Education, as published in its online ‘Learning for the future resource’, under Learning Dispositions, “Development of these dispositions is fundamental for students

Among many other learning dispositions, having a growth mindset was identified as central to our thriving school community.

Academic performance Meriden has a proud record of consistently strong academic performance. Every year Meriden ranks among the top independent girls’ schools in the New South Wales Higher School Certificate (HSC), with students consistently featuring on the HSC All-Round Achievers’ List. Meriden girls are often in the top five placings in the state in a particular subject, putting them among the state’s elite academic achievers. Sydney Grammar School was incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1854 and is one of the oldest secondary schools in the country. A non-denominational, secular day school, it is situated opposite Hyde Park in the city and draws boys from all over Sydney. The school has consistently maintained a high level of academic success whilst also offering a broad and balanced range of co-curricular activities. There are two Preparatory Schools, one at St Ives (Pre-School to Year 6) and another at Edgecliff (Kindergarten to Year 6).

Grammar is an unusual school. Its liberal curriculum sets it apart, as does its focus on the life of the mind. We value academic success, although we fully accept that boys mature at different rates, and that there are many indicators of success at school besides examinations. From early on, boys are encouraged to be selfsufficient, and take responsibility for what they do. We are looking for bright and engaged boys with a love of learning, a curiosity about the world and a passion to get involved in sport, music, drama, debating, chess, cadets, art and more. If you are curious, love reading, science, languages or maths, and if you want to get involved in as many things as possible, then Grammar could be the school for you.

Over 30 other extra-curricular activities exist, of which chess, Peer Support, Army and Air Force Cadets, art workshops, historical wargaming, Dr Who Club, Science Beyond the Curriculum, Politics Club, Environment Club, fly fishing, creative writing, community service and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme are just a small sample. Fundraising for charity is conducted by the School Prefects. A (compulsory) community awareness programme operates in Form V (Year 11).

Grammar runs one of the largest means-tested scholarship programmes in the country, and also offers fee-assisted places to boys whose parents would otherwise be unable to afford the fees. If you think your son is suited to our school and would thrive here, but are worried about the fees, we want to meet him. All admission to the School is by entrance assessment and interview. The Scholarship tests for entry to Form I are held each February, and the entrance tests are in May. The school regards participation in extra-curricular activities an essential part of a broad education (see Special Programmes below.) An integrated approach to pastoral care, personal development and discipline is provided. In Form I (Year 7) boys are organised into groups of 12 under the care of a Tutor and the Master of the Lower School. This is augmented through a Peer Support scheme. From Forms II to V (Years 8 to 12) boys are again allocated to Tutorial groups, this time within the Senior House system. Tutors meet informally with their boys each day.

There are School Counsellors at each of the three branches of the School.

Curriculum In Form I (Year 7) all boys take English, Mathematics, Science, Latin, French, History, Geography, Music, Visual Arts, Applied Arts (Design & Technology) and PE. Elective subjects offered in Forms II to IV (Years 8-10) are Classical Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, French, German, Italian, Chinese (Mandarin), History, Geography, Music, Visual Arts, Applied Arts and Drama. HSC courses are available in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth and Environmental Science, Classical Greek, Latin, French, German, Italian, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese for Beginners, Modern and Ancient History, Geography, Economics, Music, Visual Arts, Studies of Religion, Design and Technology, Drama and PDHPE. Extension courses are available in English, Mathematics, History, Languages and Music. In line with the School’s policy on breadth, all boys are encouraged to take twelve units in the HSC including at least two humanities subjects.

Boarding experience St Joseph’s College (SJC) is unique among Australian schools because of its strong commitment to boarding education. With around 50 per cent of Joeys students enrolled as boarders (either weekly or full), the college is one of the largest boarding schools in the Southern Hemisphere. Boarding and day students share fully in the life of the college and there is no separation based on enrolment.

Weekly boarding Students leave SJC to the care of their parents after they have completed their full sporting commitment on Saturday. They return to the college on Sunday evening or Monday morning. This is an excellent option for students who live close enough to travel home each weekend. Many weekly boarders live locally and have chosen boarding because of the opportunities it provides.

Full boarding Students stay at the college seven nights a week during term time. PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR THE FUTURE Future career prospects for today’s children look very different to what they did several years ago. It’s predicted that many future jobs are yet to be created. So with this being the case, how can we prepare students for careers that are currently non-existent? Northside Montessori’s Deputy Principal, Janene Johnson, highlights how Montessori Education has led the way in preparing children for the challenges now and into the future.

We are now well into the 21st century and it is quite incredible how much times have changed since many of us were at primary school. When I was at school my fellow students wanted to be doctors, teachers, firemen, shopkeepers and astronauts. Our world has changed so much now that experts and researchers agree, our

children will be in careers that haven’t even been invented yet. The World Economic Forum predicts that 65 per cent of children will be in this situation.

Recently at Northside Montessori’s Primary Science Evening, a parent was overheard

saying that we need our children to learn to think outside the square. Currently, traditional education is still grounded in philosophies dating back 100 years or more. A huge focus is placed on language and mathematics. The time throughout the day is highly structured and teacher-driven. There is very little scope for independent work or for students to critically think about subjects and problem solve within a collaborative team. However, these are the features of education that researchers are saying must be introduced if children are to be able to adapt to the rapid and complex changes that are occurring in the world which will become their workplace.

collaboratively with others, design, create and critically think about information and solutions.

They must be taught the skills that will allow them to adapt to a constantly changing world.

Children must also learn the social skills which will enable them to work creatively with others.

There must be a focus on exploring things rather than knowing things. As Professor Glenys Thompson, Deputy Principal at the Australian Science and Mathematics School told ABC’s Four Corners (2016), “They need to know how to learn because we don’t know what it is they’re going to need to learn.”

The world is highly computerised now and will become more so in the next decade and beyond. Technology is taking over tasks that were once done by humans. In his article ‘Are Schools Preparing Our Children for the Workplaces of the Future?’ published by ABC’s Four Corners on 4 July 2016, reporter Geoff Thompson states, “Up to 40 per cent of current Australian jobs could disappear within the next 10 to 15 years as robots and computers continue their unstoppable advance.” The jobs that will be safe from automation are the ones that require a human element.

Researchers are now recommending that schools introduce some element of projectbased learning. Several schools in Canada are trialling Genius Hour. Every few days students get an hour where they can explore a project of their choice. “These initiatives ignite a passion for self-directed learning and create opportunities for creativity and problem-solving – skills easily adapted to changing times,” writes Peter Gamwell, co-author of The Wonder Wall: Leading Creative Schools and Organizations in an Age of Complexity (Corwin Press, 2017).

A common question parents often ask is, “How do they go at high school?” The answer is that they are self-assured, confident, flexible, creative thinkers who are armed with excellent research and social skills. A recurring comment from graduates is that their high school teachers say they ask a lot of questions. This is because our graduates have very enquiring minds and want to find answers. They are not afraid to voice opinions and often come up with very creative ways to solve problems. Graduates are always on hand to assist other students and are team players.

Montessori students are independent, self-driven problem-solvers who will be able to adapt and move into the future.

The skills that are intrinsic to them as a result of their Montessori education are timeless and will carry them forward to careers we can only imagine.

A Montessori classroom embodies all these recommended characteristics. Our children are encouraged to be independent in their learning and work choices. The Directress is there to guide and support, not to dictate while imparting facts and figures. In the words of Maria Montessori, who developed the unique Montessori method of educating children, “Our care of the children should be governed not by the desire to ‘make them learn things’, but by the endeavour always to keep burning within them the light which is called intelligence.”
