W

elcome to the last edition of Trenchless Australasia for 2023.

What an achievement it is for many to make it through these last 12 months. From writing about the industey completing major projects to attending my second No-Dig Down Under, this year has been huge to say the least.

However, the trenchless sector continues to come out stronger and more versatile every year, by enhancing its technology and working together to create better solutions for the challenges faced.

In this edition we celebrate and welcome Bothar’s Shane Kimpton, Rangedale’s Adam Kermeen and TDG Environmental’s Shane Curren. To read more about their roles and ambitions, check out the People on the Move feature on page 58.

This edition also highlights the safety and training work being done in the industry. While trenchless technology and methodologies are still considered a niche segment of the construction industry, significant work is being done by stakeholders to ensure the benefits of no-dig methods are becoming mainstream, and importantly completed in a safe and sustainable way.

In addition to this theme, other unique features in the next edition

include Horizontal Directional Drilling, Rehabilitation and Repair, Microtunnelling, Waste Management, CCTV and Inspection, and Relining.

Alongside these important topics of the industry, we take a step back and look at the top stories of 2023. Here we celebrate contract wins, project progressions and the people who make up the trenchless industry.

We also put a spotlight on The Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology’s (ASTT) calling for applications to the Young Trenchless Professionals (YTP) Committee - a new venture for young members of the trenchless industry.

Led by ASTT Victorian Councillor Ashley Hamer, the committee will work collectively with the ASTT to generate new and innovative ideas to setup for a successful future.

hat a year it has been for the ASTT. From No-Dig Down Under back again in 2023 to successfully securing the ISTT International No-Dig event in Auckland in 2026, this year has been eventful.

No-Dig Down Under 2023 returned for a second year in a row, hosted at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, proving again to be the largest trenchless technology trade show in the Southern Hemisphere.

The conference theme this year was ‘Better Outcomes Through Trenchless’ and through this theme we stimulated the conversation and papers, and the panel discussions on improving the service industry with better design, better method selection, and better delivery to conclude improved overall trenchless solutions.

I for one, find each No-Dig Down Under event more inspiring than the last, and this year once again did that.

Looking to the future, the ASTT has

been successful in its bid to host the 2026 International No-Dig Conference and Exhibition in Auckland, New Zealand.

This is off the back of Secretary Trevor Gosatti and Prime Creative Media’s Simon Coburn presenting a bid at the recent ISTT International Council Meeting at its International No-Dig Event in Mexico.

This will be a great opportunity for the industry in New Zealand to showcase its capabilities and celebrate the trenchless projects and technologies in the country.

As you will see in the pages of this edition, Victorian ASTT Councillor Ashley Hamer has put a call out to young people in the trenchless industry to join our newly formed Young Trenchless Professionals Committee.

Joining the committee will bring benefits such as professional development, networking opportunities, knowledge sharing, mentoring and coaching opportunities.

While we say goodbye to 2023, myself and the ASTT wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. We look forward to connecting with the industry again in 2024 and seeing everyone in person at the 2025 No-Dig Down Under event in Melbourne, Victoria.

Secretary’s corner December 2023

Prior to the No-Dig Conference, the ISTT International Council (made up of representatives of the 28 affiliated societies) met and discussed the business of the ISTT.

ASTT, together with its media partner, Prime Creative Media, presented a bid to hold the 2026 event in Auckland, New Zealand. The event is to be hosted at the New Zealand International Convention Centre, which is currently under construction. The ISTT International Council unanimously voted in favour of the proposal.

The New Zealand International Convention Centre is due for completion mid-2024 and will be a world class facility. It will be one of only three carbon neutral convention centres in the world, and a great location to highlight technologies such as trenchless technology.

The ASTT strongly believes that hosting the 2026 ISTT International No-Dig Conference and Exhibition in Auckland will be a fantastic opportunity to promote and showcase the vibrant trenchless technology community in the Australasian region, particularly in New Zealand, to the rest of the world.

No-Dig Down Under 2025 Melbourne Following the successful No-Dig Down Under 2023 event held in Brisbane, the ASTT Council recently met and approved the planning for the 2025 No-Dig Down Under to be held in Melbourne.

Trenchless industry stakeholders have already shown strong interest in our next event, tentatively scheduled for September 2025 in Melbourne.

The ASTT will continue to work together with our media partners, Prime Creative Media, to bring another high-quality event for 2025 in Melbourne and then the ASTT hosted ISTT International No-Dig to be held in Auckland, New Zealand in September 2026.

The next generation of trenchless The Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT) is calling for applications to the Young Trenchless Professionals (YTP) Committee, a new venture for young members of the trenchless industry.

eveloped for members of the trenchless community aged 35 years or younger, the YTP Committee will focus on assisting the ASTT achieve its mission and strategic objectives.

“The ASTT understands the importance young trenchless professionals play in leading trenchless technology into the future,” ASTT Victorian Councillor Ash Hamer said.

“We want to access new ideas and innovation through the next generation.”

Hamer, who is leading the charge in calling for applications, first joined the industry 15 years ago through his graduate role at Baulderstone on Melbourne Water’s Water Resources Alliance.

“I still remember my first day walking into the Kodak Building on Victoria Parade not knowing what to expect and I’ve been in the water industry ever since,” he said.

Currently, Hamer leads the Major Projects Team at Yarra Valley Water.

“I’ve been lucky to work on some amazing trenchless projects like the Lockerbie and Epping Main Sewers that have all demonstrated how critical trenchless technology is to the water industry,” he said.

“The water industry has a knack of making you love it, so I’m well invested in it. And it’s an exciting time for trenchless technology given the growth in the industry”.

Hamer said the committee will work collectively with the ASTT to generate new and innovative ideas to setup for a successful future.

“The committee will work on strategies and initiatives to advocate and support the leadership of trenchless technology,” he said.

“This could look like organising networking events or trenchless forums.

“Ultimately it will be up to the committee with where they want to focus on, which is an exciting opportunity to a part of.”

A minimum of five members will be selected for the YTP committee, with all members required to be members of the ASTT, either

individually or under a company membership.

As Hamer explained, the committee is seeking a broad range of diversity of thought, gender, background, and experience.

“You don’t have to fit a certain mould, we’re after diversity of thought and want you to bring your true self to the committee to make it great,” he said.

The expectation is that the committee will meet every two months virtually at a minimum, and in person once a year with travel funded by the ASTT. In return, joining the committee will bring a wealth of benefits such as professional development, networking opportunities, knowledge sharing, mentoring and coaching opportunities.

For anyone wanting to join, Hamer offered some words of encouragement.

“Step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself,” Hamer said.

“From my own experience, the opportunities that I was most nervous about were the most rewarding.”

Rob Carr locks in Alkimos project contract Microtunnelling contractor Rob Carr is continuing to make waves in the trenchless industry with the recent contract award for the Alkimos Main Sewer Section 1 construction.

The Alkimos Main Sewer Section 1 is a major capital works project for DevelopmentWA. This will tie in with a 68m section of sewer beneath the rail corridor near Alkimos Station, completed as part of the Yanchep Rail Extension

by METRONET. The contract win for Rob Carr follows a competitive tender, which involved ongoing collaboration with several stakeholders for the major Alkimos Central Development.

This was a necessary and valuable part of the process to ensure a “best for project” outcome for all parties involved.

Rob Carr will self-perform the construction of 830m of DN1500 sewer and three access chambers.

The sewer will be constructed by two sections of micro tunnelling (157m and 306m), with the remainder constructed by open excavation.

The company has advised that over the next few months, other work on the project will include the construction of a 10m diameter in-situ concrete launch shaft some 9m deep, and a 12m deep receive shaft constructed using post and rail techniques.

The contract win for Rob Carr follows a competitive tender, which involved ongoing collaboration with several stakeholders for the major Alkimos Central Development.

The project involved cleaning a 27m DN 150 clay pipe located in a narrow access lane leading to a construction site. The pipe was full of concrete of various depths ranging from 40 per cent to 100 per cent.

Once Picote Solutions was engaged, there was a major reduction in cleaning and labour time with the works being completed in three days, with the rate of cutting and removal varying depending on the consistency, hardness, and level of cementitious material.

Significant environmental savings were also made by the team using the equipment, who managed to complete the works in three days versus the 44 days that the existing equipment would take.

This method also demonstrated much lower water usage than other pipe cleaning methods.

Trenchless technology on display across Victoria From the regional cities of Bendigo and Ballarat to the metropolitan hub of Melbourne, trenchless technology continues to shine across Victoria.

I

n December 2022, Central Highlands Water’s Ballarat Sewer Build commenced stage two with microtunnelling beneath Humffray Street South.

Similarly in Bendigo, Coliban Water used a $1.5 million laser-guided tunnel boring system to replace the East Bendigo sewer trunk main.

In July 2023, South East Water announced a $1.5 billion investment in infrastructure upgrades across Melbourne’s south-east.

Tunnelling work also began on Melbourne’s newest sewer pipeline.

Ballarat sewer build uses microtunnelling For stage two of the Ballarat Sewer Build, a microtunnelling machine will bore a 700m, 1200mm diameter tunnel beneath Humffray Street South.

Minor repairs and sewer pipe relining for the existing pipes will also occur during tunnelling operations.

The project represents a $25 million investment from utility company Central Highlands Water and will bolster the city’s two largest sewer lines – the Ballarat East and Ballarat South – which were constructed almost 100 years ago.

Since the original pipes were laid, Ballarat’s population has grown by more than five times to 117,000 people.

Once all stages are completed, two large interconnecting sewer lines will run beneath the streets of the city, approximately 6km in length.

Coliban to tunnel new sewer in Bendigo The East Bendigo sewer trunk main is set to improve Bendigo’s growing population.

Coliban Water Manager of Infrastructure Corey Bourne likened the tunnelling technology to the massive tunnel boring machines digging the Melbourne Metro Tunnel, but on a much smaller scale.

“The technology means we can reduce the need for excavation, limit disruption to nearby residents, and avoid damage to trees and habitat,” he said.

“It allows us to constantly monitor and manoeuvre the machine to ensure accuracy.”

The company is working with Bohrtec to bore a microtunnell that will house the new 507m sewer trunk main.

Melbourne’s newest sewer under construction Almost 65 years after the original sewer was built, and responsible for the transfer of 30 per cent of Melbourne’s wastewater, the new 670m Hobsons Bay main sewer stretches from Westgate Park, Port Melbourne to Scienceworks in Spotswood, under the Yarra River.

“The Hobsons Bay main sewer project forms part of a broader Melbourne Water capital infrastructure program that will enhance the reliability of our sewerage network and services for the benefit of Melburnians today and for generations to come,” Melbourne Water Managing Director Nerina Di Lorenzo said.

“We’re looking towards the future and anticipating the evolving needs of a growing Melbourne – which is projected to nearly double in population by 2050.

The $206 million Melbourne Water-funded critical sewage infrastructure project allows sewage to continue to flow to its Western Treatment Plant while the existing sewer – which is reaching the end of its service life – is upgraded.

A joint initiative delivered by the Victorian Government, Melbourne Water, John Holland and Museums Victoria; the project is due for completion in mid-2024.

Looking at ASTT’s policy and promotion of trenchless technology operator qualifications The ASTT Secretary Trevor Gosatti has taken a deep dive into how the society promotes the use of trenchless technology ahead of traditional excavation and replacement construction methods.

T

renchless technology includes benefits in the social, economic, and environmental factors that apply to a proposed worksite.

The ASTT strongly believes that all operators performing trenchless technology works on a civil infrastructure worksite, should as a minimum, be of a “tradesperson” level standard, regardless of the types of work.

A tradesperson level qualification is the equivalent of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level Three (III) qualification that is recognised Australia wide. The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is the national policy for qualifications in the Australian education and training system.

However, the qualifications system is slightly different for New Zealand in comparison to Australia.

In Australia, the ASTT has advocated for and obtained industry qualifications and competency units for the trenchless industry.

For over 20 years now the society has supported the qualifications and competencies on various industry bodies and provided resources towards the training and assessments of trenchless competencies for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to deliver them.

There are three Certificate Three (III) qualifications that trenchless technology operators can obtain to be regarded as a tradesperson level recognised operator: • Certificate III in Trenchless Technology (RII31619) (Preferred by ASTT) • Certificate III in Civil Construction (RII30920) (with inclusion of the relevant RIICTT [trenchless] competencies) • Certificate III in Drilling Operations (RII31820) (with inclusion of the relevant RIICTT [trenchless] competencies and Locating services competencies) Details of the qualifications are provided on the www.training.gov.au site, which is the Australian Government qualifications site. Qualifications are typically a package of competencies (units) relating to various skills to form a recognised qualification.

Competencies can also be attained in a manner to recognise particular skill sets, which can be part of a qualification.

The qualifications are flexible to suit the type of trenchless technology occupation that is sought.

The type of occupation sought relates to the specialist trenchless technology competencies that are contained within the qualifications. At least one of these competencies (RIICTT) must be completed to attain a trenchless technology recognition.

There are currently 10 specialist trainees that would select the appropriate trenchless competency unit to be attained relating to the occupation they seek to obtain qualifications for.

The specialist competencies cover the various occupations include horizontal directional drillers, micro tunnellers, pipeline and chamber renovators, in-situ pipe replacement and pipe relining.

In addition, associated competencies such as vacuum excavation, track directional boring operations and installing trench shoring can be attained as part of a flexible skills-based qualification.

The attainment of recognised qualifications should be done through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that is registered for the national VET (Vocational Education & Training) Framework, and scoped to deliver training and assessment for the relevant qualification.

Trainees and employers should engage an RTO to deliver and assess the learned skills for each of the competencies acquired, that package up to form the eventual qualification. The reality is that most of the skills required for trenchless technology

skills are typically learned in an on-site environment, and training and assessment requirements would be framed accordingly for that.

A small amount of training would be done in a classroom. Various government subsidies are offered towards the completion of a qualification.

New trainees would have a program outlined (in consultation with the employer) by the RTO to obtain the qualification.

Existing operators who have already acquired skills in their on-site learning during their employment can be assessed and seek recognition of prior learning (RPL) for the various skills and competencies they may have already.

The RTO can then map out the further skills/competencies required to attain the relevant trenchless qualification.

The ASTT believes that it is important that trenchless technology skills be recognised and we encourage all employers and operators to seek to attain industry recognised qualifications.

We acknowledge that there are many operators in our industry that have significant skills but have not been formally recognised for them in the form of competency units or qualifications.

We believe there are significant benefits for the individual operator, their employer, and the industry in general if skills are formally recognised and we encourage this to occur.

The ASTT acknowledges the impediments that the industry has experienced that

has not encouraged the attainment of formal qualifications: • Cost – there is a cost to the employer in time spent to train and assess trainees for qualifications. Government provides various subsidies and grants to off-set some of this, but there is no doubt a cost to the employer. This cost however should be seen as an investment not a cost to the organization. Can you afford not to invest in your staff and improve their skills?

• Lack of RTOs – This is the chicken and the egg question? If the industry does not have the demand to train and assess its trainees and operators, the RTO’s will not scope up to provide their services. If as an industry we demand and require training and assessment, many RTOs will scope up and provide the service. The ASTT has a number of RTOs as members and they would be able to assist.

• Equal playing field – As a trenchless technology contractor you may have to compete against other companies that may not be investing in staff and training. They get away with it because the Asset Owners that contract the work via the tender box, or quotation, do not demand a minimum level of training or qualification. If it is demanded at the tender stage by all asset owners, then the cost will be built in to the works and be equal to all.

The ASTT supports the following policy: ASTT Policy The ASTT supports the promotion of Certificate III trenchless technology qualifications and recommends that as a minimum asset owners should require that for each trenchless technology crew, at least one person within the crew has obtained one of these qualifications.

In the initial instance a staged approach

the trenchless technology industry is a genuine one with many benefits. They learn on the job skills along the way, get paid whilst working, and obtain qualifications. It is an alternative pathway to doing tertiary education straight from school with little or no practical experience.

I also want to highlight that there are other pathway options for our industry through the VET sector.

The ASTT strongly supports the training and education of the trenchless technology industry in a number of ways: • We offer and deliver various one day educational courses (licensed via NASTT and amended to suit ASTT audience) prior to the No-Dig Down Under event. We will be looking to expanding these opportunities in the future.

• We advocate industry-led promotion of qualifications to government, asset owners and industry stakeholders and promote our policy.

• We support and have been involved in the creation and maintenance of the trenchless technology competencies and qualifications as part of the AQF training packages. We were an active member of the Resources and Civil Infrastructure Industry body that managed the training packages, and we will look to be part of the new BuildSkills Australia entity that will oversee the training packages in the future.

• We have provided resources towards the training and assessments of trenchless competencies assist RTOs to train and assess trenchless industry trainees.

The ASTT is happy to assist any member that needs assistance regarding training requirements.

Become a hydro excavation pro Asset Training’s Registered Training Organisation Manager Chris McCarthy sat down with Trenchless Australasia to walk through the details of its ‘Operate a hydro excavation system’ training course.

fter his first six months with Interflow as an intern, promising engineer Matt Cremona was offered a place in a program that would introduce him to all parts of the business.

“It was all about experience and opportunity,” Cremona, now Interflow Delivery Manager, said.

“I was given the opportunity to rotate around different divisions, for six months to a year each, within the organisation.

“I spent some time with operations, asset creation, repairs and maintenance, product development and tendering.”

He’s adamant: the strong connections he built across the business has helped his career ever since.

“Having those relationships meant that when I was given opportunities in other divisions, I could rely on those relationships to help me in my new roles,” he said.

That was 13 years ago. Interflow’s approach was built on founder Harold ‘Bill’ Weaver’s passion for developing his people to be their best and formalised more recently as the H J Weaver Development Program.

“The program is all about supporting and developing people over the years by creating a business environment that encourages, enables and supports learning,” Interflow People and Capability Business Partner Fiona Warnock said.

NordiTube’s inserted hose pressure liner lands in Australia With more than 40 years of cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining experience, NordiTube Technologies has brought the next level of pressure liners to Australia.

N

ordiTube customers profit from scale production, and its manufacturing facilities in America, Vietnam, Europe and China, which creates more economic prices and lower lead times. This extended research and development (R&D) structure allows the company to maintain technical leadership, and high-quality products.

One result of this is the IH Liner. Inserted hose (IH) liner technology for pressure pipe rehabilitation was first developed in Europe more than 20 years ago. This technology is effective for long distance pressure pipe rehabilitation.

So far, this technology had been limited on diameters up to DN500.

Now, NordiTube has brought the IH technology to the next level, by producing pressure liners up to DN1200. Used for the water, sewer main, gas, hot temperature, and oil industries, the IH system range is between 50mm–1200mm and is AS/NZS 4020 approved.

The IH Liner only requires standard equipment, including a winch, air compressor and a IH tool kit, with supervisor training provided for first installers by NordiTube.

In New South Wales, Sydney Water utilised this game-changing product on its Strathfield Sewer Rising Main project.

The rehabilitated section posed a challenge for the designers because of the location and the diameter of the pressure pipe.

The line was located under two busy roads and a school, which meant that open dig pipe replacement was immediately out of the question.

To add further challenges, the project had to be completed within a two-week timeframe.

In total, the length to be rehabilitated was 320m of 750mm mild steel cement lined pipe.

The IH Liner, capable of large diameters, allowed the designers the opportunity to match the time frame, diameter size and pressure rating for this challenging project.

After the cleaning, the IH Liner installation was achieved over four days. The set-up of the liner, including the equipment assembly, only took half a day.

On the second day, the pulling-in was accomplished, with took three hours for the entire 320m length of DN750 liner. Once this was completed, the liner was expanded the next day with an air compressor unit to establish its pre-set round shape.

The Sydney Water team later installed the two connectors, before a pressure test was conducted, and the line then ready for reconnection.

“We recognised the limited options for waste disposal in Melbourne and designed a wet waste recycling facility, ensuring waste generated can be disposed of locally.”

The facility includes a washing and sizing plant that allows waste to be recycled into repurposed materials such as concrete, sand, aggregate and topsoil.

Hill said the use of these recycled resources reduces the need for traditional quarry materials, which is becoming constrained due to demand and natural resources depleting and the demand for recycled construction products increasing.

he kwik-ZIP HDX-90 spacers were recently utilised on a gas main crossing in Devon, Southwest England.

The Forches Cross LTS Diversion involved the sleeving of a 40m 500mm OD API 5L steel pipe (also known as L360 pipe) into a 1200mm ID concrete sleeve.

The diversion was required in preparation for work on the new North Devon Link Road which was designed to reduce pressure on surrounding roads and provide access to a new housing development in the area. kwik-ZIP’s large range of spacers cater for a variety of carrier and casing pipe size combinations as well as providing flexibility to deal with different project requirements.

The HDX Series has a unique load-sharing design. It is designed to maximise the loadbearing capacity of each runner while reducing point loading. The simple and efficient installation process does not require any special tools.

The HDX casing spacer comes in four runner heights, ensuring that pipeline installers can handle a range of carrier pipe outer diameter and casing inner diameter combinations. This flexibility also grants installers the ability to customise pipe position for grade control.

Centralisers putting trenchless projects on the right line Traditional centralisers have several limitations that can increase risk on trenchless pipeline projects, resulting in time and cost blowouts, and reducing accuracy. But all hopes are not lost, thanks to OptionX Group’s Riteline Centralisers.

W

ith the confidence that Riteline Centralisers, a new fully adjustable spacer system on the market, would ensure accurate installation of product pipe, Edge Underground has used these casing spacers to successfully complete a sewer pipeline project.

Riteline in action Edge Underground was contracted by West Region Delivery Team (WRDT) to install the Austral lead-in pipe for Sydney Water’s Austral Leppington Wastewater project. The project will provide safe and reliable drinking water and wastewater to service growth in the Austral and Leppington precincts.

The project involves the construction of a new pumping station, a temporary pressure main, and the construction of three carriers: Kemps Creek Carrier, the Austral Carrier and the Bonds Creek Carrier.

As part of the project, Edge Underground installed 477m of DN 300 glass reinforced plastic (GRP) in a DN 500 mild steel casing, with bore lengths varying from 87m to 140m in length.

Ground conditions varied along the length of the bore, from sandy clay to shale up to 40 MegaPascal (Mpa).

Edge Underground Managing Director and OptionX Group Chief Executive Officer Stuart Harrison said the team used Riteline

Centralisers on the project to create 75mm spacing around the product pipe. The company then grouted thereafter to ensure a neat fit inside the 500 casing to maximise precision.

“Riteline Centralisers come in both rigid and flex series depending on project requirements,” he said.

“For the Austral lead-in pipe, we chose to use the rigid series because we checked the bore and didn’t see any potential for interference that would put the centralisers under excessive load.

“However, had we looked at the bore and seen the potential for interference we could’ve used the flex series, which feature a unique spring-like design that enables elastic

deformation around obstacles to prevent jamming and ensure a smooth workflow.”

Harrison said another benefit of Riteline Centralisers on the project was their individual attachment points as opposed to centralisers banding around the pipe.

This allowed grout to flow easily around them, preventing a grout plug that is often caused by standard centraliser bands.

“Riteline reduces potential issues with grouting because it is tensioned on the centreline, whilst minimising flow restriction,” Harrison said.

“This means if any air pockets do happen to form, the pipe is already tensioned in the right position.”

A further feature that sets Riteline apart from other centralisers on the market is their extraordinary design.

The centralisers are designed with very highbond adhesive strips that prevent slippage to ensure accuracy is maintained and eliminate the need for pre-wrapping or treating the pipe.

Addressing the industry’s challenges Riteline Centralisers are an innovative solution that improve the accuracy of trenchless installations by ensuring the fixed position of the carrier pipe relative to the bored hole or encasement pipe.

They can accommodate pipes from 100mm in diameter, with no upper limit.

“What sets Riteline Centralisers apart from other spacers on the market is their ability to adjust to different heights, ranging from 30mm up to 125mm,” Harrison said.

“Other casing spacers need to be purchased in specific sizes and can’t be adapted to meet changing needs on-site.

“With Riteline, incremental adjustments can be made to the existing centralisers rather than requiring new centralisers of a different size, saving time, money and stock wastage.”

Typically, centralisers are also designed to either slot together to fully surround the pipe or must be designed in a size that completely surrounds the pipe.

Regardless of the weight or load requirements, the maximum number of centralisers is called for.

This is not the case for Riteline, which can be attached to the pipe as needed and the number of spacers required is based solely on the load, providing a tailored and efficient solution.

This unique feature minimises the use of excess product, thereby reducing costs and environmental impact.

“As each centraliser is individually attached to the pipe, the risk of catastrophic failure is reduced,” Harrison said. “Traditional centralisers that surround the pipe can fail when they snag on an obstacle in the bore, which can cause an entire ring of centralisers to move, compromising the installation.”

The benefits of Riteline Centralisers also go beyond the project site.

Riteline Centralisers are an innovative solution that improve the accuracy of trenchless installations.

“Traditional centralisers are notorious for causing cut injuries during the installation process,” Harrison said.

However, Riteline is manufactured from durable engineering polymers.

“Without the thin sheets of metal often seen, the risk of these injuries is removed,” he said.

“Coupled with their easy installation, that chance of workplace injuries is reduced.”

Australian owned and made Edge Underground has been developing by using and providing feedback on Riteline for almost 10 years.

“We considered the best way to complete the project for the customer, in terms of time frames but most importantly, quality,” Bennett said.

“Initially, we wanted to go with a system

One system, multiple applications Online Pipe & Cable Locating has expanded its range of services to include cutting jobs using its established MainLite inspection system, which can also be used to operate the MicroGator Air.

A year to remember for TRACTO Following a successful 2023, TRACTO Australia sat down with Trenchless Australasia to discuss the achievements of the year and the company’s plans for 2024.

The Hands On day will be held from 15–19 April in Germany.

rom attending No-Dig Down Under, to showcasing its position as a leading provider of innovative and advanced solutions for the trenchless industry, 2023 was a busy year for TRACTO Australia.

“We’re proud of the work we have done to provide reliable trenchless solutions for our customers in Australia,” TRACTO Australia Sales Manager Daniel Toms said.

“We position ourselves as more than a supplier and aim to provide the best in class after sales support, training, spare parts and servicing.”

With this focus in mind, in April 2023, the company appointed Aaron Long as its new Product Support Specialist, providing onthe-ground support for TRACTO customers in Australia.

In September 2023, TRACTO Australia attended No-Dig Down Under, the southern hemisphere’s only large-scale conference and

exhibition dedicated to trenchless technology in Brisbane, Queensland.

Here, the company showcased the latest GRUNDODRILL ACS300 horizontal directional drilling (HDD) rig at its exhibition stand.

While this was the central focus of its stand, TRACTO Australia also had experts from Germany in attendance to discuss the company’s extensive range of trenchless solutions.

Representatives from German HDD manufacturer Prime Drilling were also on the stand, following the recent strengthening of the partnership between the two companies.

As a result, TRACTO Australia was able to move from an agent to a distributor of Prime’s range of 50t to maxi HDD rigs to the Australasian region.

In addition to its presence at the trade show, TRACTO Australia also hosted a social function on the eve of the conference, for its key partners and customers.

“It was really exciting having some of our key partners from Australia attend the No-Dig Down Under conference as well as our social function,” Toms said.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to connect and thank our customers for their support.

“It was also an opportunity to further develop those relationships and ensure we understand their needs to enable us to determine how best to support them.”

Now as 2023 draws to a close, TRACTO Australia is looking to 2024 and what lies ahead.

One event on the horizon is the Hands On event, which is held at “TRACTO City” in Lennestadt, Germany from 15–19 April.

Here, visitors will experience an array of

no-dig techniques live through practical demonstrations of all product groups and an extensive lecture program.

The event also provides an evening event to make new contacts in the industry and foster professional networks.

Maximise HDD accuracy with combined guidance technologies As the underground grows more crowded, the industry is under pressure to deliver highly accurate installations through a web of existing infrastructure.

HDD has become an essential part of the expansion and replacement of critical data, electrical, water, energy, and waste networks, with proven effectiveness across a diverse range of installations.

Exploring the practical limits of HDD accuracy has become a popular topic of discussion within the trenchless community.

and European Drilling Contractors Association (DCA) are updating their best practices and guidelines, it is important to have a clear understanding of the role of guidance systems in maximising the accuracy of the HDD process.

Guidance overview HDD guidance systems have generally been classified as either walkover (small rig) or wireline (large rig). However, the term wireline simply refers to one type of power and data transmission method which may be

utilised by rigs of any size.

The term downhole more appropriately describes a guidance system capable of operating without surface access, and with no inherent depth limitation. Downhole systems may be classified as magnetic downhole, gyroscopic downhole or combo systems.

As shown in Table 1, there are several methods of guiding a HDD pilot bore.

While details may differ depending on the manufacturer’s approach, a complete HDD guidance system must provide the following capabilities: • Steering puts the directional in HDD: The drilling assembly is fitted with an offset bit, sub, or motor. An accelerometer in the steering tool informs the driller of the current inclination and roll-angle. Orienting the offset and pushing (sliding) the drill string without rotation provides directional control of the borehole.

• Surveying calculates the location of the pilot bore as it progresses: Surveys are taken at discrete positions (typically when making a drill rod connection) when there is no fluid flow, and the sensors are most stable.

HDD survey tools (downhole magnetic or

gyro) measure the orientation of the tool relative to the earth’s poles (azimuth) and gravitational field (pitch). These values are combined with total drill pipe length (measured depth) to calculate the current position relative to a known starting point, typically the bore entry point (Figure 1).

• Tracking verifies the calculated survey position by making direct measurements relative to external reference points. A tracking source (ParaTrack2 electrical cable, Beacon Tracker, Microcoil, etc.) is placed at a known location on surface or run through an adjacent, completed conduit.

The source is periodically electrified and emits an electro-magnetic signal sensed by the magnetometers in the survey tool. The signal is emitted from a known location, at a known intensity, at a known frequency, providing a series of additional tie points that greatly increases the accuracy of the surveyed position (Figure 2).

Sources of error While technological advancements have greatly improved the quality of HDD surveys, it is important to understand the types of errors that may act independently or in combination to influence the accuracy of an HDD guidance system.

Random errors are unpredictable and may appear as though no one sample repeats (low precision). However, the impact of random errors is minimised by increasing the sample size and averaging. Adequate sampling makes it possible to obtain accurate answers from highly random data sets.

Systematic errors are consistent and reproducible, imparting a bias to the data.

When drilling on survey data alone, without the benefit of additional tie points from an external tracking source, systematic error will typically become the main source of positional uncertainty over longdistances (>300m).

Gross errors are, in short, typically caused by human error. Gross errors can be

especially difficult to detect as they cannot be modeled or effectively planned for. Gross errors include input errors (moving a decimal point), transcription errors (flipping a sign, transposing a digit), or operational errors due to a lack of training, etc.

Ellipse of uncertainty While all three types of errors may act independently or in combination, it is widely accepted that the majority of borehole surveying uncertainty is due to systematic errors in the surveying system. Small errors in inclination, azimuth, and depth systematically accumulate. This accumulation forms an ellipse of uncertainty regarding the true position of an inclined borehole that grows as a function of drilled length (Figure 3).

Maximum accuracy, minimum risk.

The positional uncertainty that results when a pilot bore is guided from a single tie point presents a risk that all parties must be aware of when considering the available technology.

A guidance system combining a precision survey (gyro or magnetic) with secondary tracking (ParaTrack2 electrical cable, Beacon Tracker System, Microcoil) that identifies and corrects for any induced error results in the highest achievable accuracy for HDD (Figure 4).

Modern HDD job sites fuse the latest technological advancements with the realities of getting product in the ground. Above all is the need to identify potential sources of risk that could slow progress, result in an accidental strike, or worse yet, cause the project to fail entirely.

A clear understanding of the capabilities and limitations of available guidance technology ensures constructable designs with tolerances that can be realistically followed, maximising the chances of a successful outcome.

From little things, big things grow Formed off the back of 20-plus years of friendship, APEX Utilities is a Western Australian team specialising in replacement mains and services in urban areas.

he company’s strengths have been driven by a leadership team who have built vast experience through their roles within both privately owned businesses, and tier 1 utility providers.

Due to this lower sound power level, APEX Utilities has been able to use the Vermeer rig to complete works at night without causing too much noise.

Bosting 24,000lb of thrust/pullback and 3000ft-lb of rotational torque, the D23x30

Reflecting on 2023 From constructing major water pipelines to rehabilitating a 100-year-old sewer, Trenchless Australasia looks back on the biggest stories of 2023.

A

t the beginning of 2023, microtunnelling contractor Rob Carr began construction of a 1km long wastewater Breakfast Creek Trunk Sewer Main Upgrade, running under the heard of Brisbane, Queensland.

In Victoria, Greater Western Water’s contractor Jaydo Construction commenced works on stage two of Melbourne’s Victoria Street Main Renewal project.

Similarly, in Watsonia, the North East Link continued its progress with piling works now complete.

In New South Wales, the Sydney Metro West project saw a significant milestone with tunnel boring machines (TBMs) Daphne, Beatrice and Betty beginning their journeys.

Rob Carr begins construction of important Brisbane sewer in $45m Urban Utilities project The Urban Utilities project is part of a major infrastructure upgrade to cater for population growth in the city’s north.

Contracted by Urban Utilities’ delivery partner Fulton Hogan, Rob Carr utilised a 29-tonne Herrenknecht microtunnell boring machine (MTBM) named Leila Perry for construction of the sewer.

“We have a strong reputation as a leader and innovator in the industry with a proven track record of delivering high-quality 52 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2023

work,” Rob Carr General Manager Angelo Soumboulidis said.

“Working closely with our client, Fulton Hogan Utilities, our innovative final design solution minimised disruption to the surrounding community and limited environmental impact.

“Our commitment to providing innovative solutions to our clients’ needs and our dedication to delivering exceptional customer

service were also key factors in our selection for this project.”

As of August 2023, the MTBM finished its 1km journey and broke through at the retrieval shaft.

Rob Carr will now undertake high density polyethylene welding of the pipe joints, while also carrying out the second stage of the S1 tunnel connection.

Construction is expected to finish in 2024.

Jaydo Construction commenced work on stage two of Melbourne’s Victoria Street Main Renewal project.

Link green bridge over Bulleen Road as well as three new wetlands along the Yarra River and Koonung Creek in Bulleen and Balwyn North.

In September 2023, the first parts of the TBMs travelled to Watsonia, with more than 20 super loads arriving progressively in three shipments over the next six months.

Once all the segments arrive on site, the two TBMs will take around six months to be assembled.

Construction of the North East Link Tunnels are expected to complete by 2028.

The North East Link Program completed piling works, forming the TBM launch area.

Greater Western Water’s renewable project hits next stage In April 2023, Jaydo Construction commenced work on stage two, which involved replacing 1.8km of water mains down Rathdowne Street and along the southern side of Victoria Street, between Exhibition Street and William Street in Melbourne.

Stage one first started in August 2022, with the successful relining of 250m of water mains along Howard Street, North Melbourne as well as 1.7km of water mains along the north side of Victoria Street, between Howard Street and Nicholson Street.

Greater Western Water General Manager for Growth and Infrastructure Amanda Smith said that ageing infrastructure is the main reason behind the works.

“The upgrade will create more capacity in the system and help ensure the water supply remains clean and reliable for our customers across North Melbourne, Carlton and the inner city,” Smith said.

“It will also prevent water network faults, reducing disruptions and improving customer experience of our services into the future.”

The project is expected to reach completion in early 2024.

North East link taking shape in Watsonia April 2023 marked the completion of the piling works for the North East Link Program within its site on the east side of Greensborough Road, Watsonia. This formed the structural foundations of the TBM launch area.

“About 7400 cubic metres of concrete was used for the box piles alone (almost 19 elephants’ worth) and if you stacked each

pile end to end, it would be almost 7.2km long,” the North East Link Program team said at the time.

The North East Link Tunnels will take 15,000 trucks off local roads every day and reduce travel times by up to 35 minutes.

This will be made possible thanks to longer tunnels of 6.5km to Watsonia, simpler interchanges at Lower Plenty Road and Manningham Road, 5 MCGs of parklands along Banyule Creek at Borlase Reserve, a new 2km tree-lined boulevard for Greensborough Road, a 2-hectare Yarra

Sydney Metro West project hits next stage By connecting Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, Sydney Metro West aims to double the rail capacity between Sydney’s two biggest CBDs once passenger services commence in 2030, to support a growing city and deliver world-class metro services to more communities.

TBMs Daphne and Beatrice began their journeys in June 2023, while TBM Betty began tunnelling in September.

At the time of publishing, TBM Daphne had reached 3.14km of her 11km journey, Beatrice had reached 3.46km, and Betty had reached 124m.

These TBMs are three of six mega TBMs to build Sydney Metro West.

Construction on the project first started in 2020. The 24km metro line has stations confirmed at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD.

TBMs Daphne, Beatrice and Betty all began their journeys for the Sydney Metro West project this year.

Women in Industry returns for 2024 The 2024 event will be hosted in Sydney following this year’s record-breaking ceremony.

T

he 2023 event was memorable for countless reasons. One of them being Woman of the Year and Safety Advocacy awards recipient Giselle Phillips.

Sitting down with Trenchless Australasia to reflect on the awards, Phillips said it was “thrilling – a different city, with a different vibe and just being a finalist was exciting”.

“I met so many wonderful women and male allies across a variety of industries,” she said.

Phillips said she will be in attendance at next year’s awards, taking place on Thursday, 20 June 2024, and was looking forward to it.

“By celebrating and encouraging, Women in Industry benefits not only women themselves but also their organisations, the economy, and society at large. It is a fundamental step towards building a more equitable and prosperous world,” she said.

“I want to be able to meet, connect and celebrate with the many women that are championing and actively contributing to their industry.”

For Phillips, events like these are vital for recognising the place of women in traditionally male-dominated fields “because they create a supportive, empowering, and inclusive environment that recognises, acknowledges and celebrates women’s contributions”.

“While also pushing for positive changes in industries and society as a whole,” she said.

Also playing an important role in the success of the event, is the support of The Women in Industry’s valued sponsors, such as Fulton Hogan, who just renewed its partnership for 2024.

McHardy said this event is a way to give back to women and the businesses who champion them.

“It is also great to celebrate the businesses that support them – after all we all want to work for an employer who appreciates diversity and is taking steps to improve it within their business awards such as this are a great way to showcase supportive businesses as well as the great talent that sits within them.”

About the ASTT

T

he Australasian Society of Trenchless Technology (ASTT) is a non-profit organisation comprising of members throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The successful establishment of the trenchless industry in Australasia has been supported and promoted by the peak industry organisation, the ASTT, since it was established in 1991.

The society works tirelessly to promote the use of trenchless technology in Australasia, lobbying government and client organisations to highlight the advantages of using trenchless technology and the benefits of training for industry.

Membership is open to all who are concerned with the provision of gas, water, sewerage, drainage, roads, telecommunications and electrical services.

ASTT membership provides trenchless professionals the tools and services they need to be better informed and better connected in this industry.

The ASTT is part of the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT), an affiliation of societies in more than 30 countries worldwide.

Shane Kimpton has joined Bothar Boring & Tunnelling as Chief Executive Officer, following the company’s successful restructuring process.

Specialising in complex subsurface infrastructure, Bothar Boring & Tunnelling focuses on tunnelling/microtunnelling and shaft construction through to direct pipe installation and auger boring.

The ownership structure under OCP Asia will allow Bothar to re-establish its balance sheet and capital for future growth.

“We have a strong technical team - we retained throughout the restructuring all of the Bothar experience that has been accumulated over the last 30 years,” Kimpton said. “For myself, the focus is on setting the strategy and working with the team on aligning everyone around the future direction of the business.”

Kimpton brings extensive experience working with companies going through growth phases.

“A key area of opportunity for us is supporting the energy transition with specialised services that will be needed,” he said.

Adam Kermeen has been appointed Chief Operating Officer at Rangedale Group, where he will oversee the optimal function of the company across its nine different businesses.

A family-owned business, Rangedale Group services the construction, industrial services, and council industries across Australia. It specialises in offering state-ofthe-art equipment and industry leading service to these sectors.

“Having grown up with my father managing Rangedale, I have been immersed in the industry my entire life,” Kermeen said.

“Over the past eight years, I have actively contributed to various aspects of the business, gaining valuable experience across all areas.”

Now in his new role, Kermeen’s primary focus includes ensuring peak performance in areas such as safety, operations, and commercial aspects of the business.

“I am looking forward to actively contributing to the ongoing growth of the business, extending its reach across Australia and beyond,” he said.

Shane Curren has recently become the Project Manager at TDG Environmental, an Australian owned company. Specialising in providing innovative solutions to stormwater and critical infrastructure assets, it operates throughout Australia and New Zealand.

“As project manager at TDG I am back and responsible for the wholistic management of both stormwater and sewer drainage networks,” Curren said.

“I am enthusiastic to once again provide customer service in drain cleaning, CCTV camera assessments, pipeline robotics and of course advanced pipeline rehabilitation.”

Curren is now responsible for a crew performing combination drain jetting and vacuum cleaning tasks for local councils on large drains.

“I was fascinated by the equipment and the operator skill set,” he said. “Drainage assessments changed everything for me as I had developed a thirst now to fix drains for the asset owner in particular ones that would prove difficult and would require specialist knowledge.”
