I

t is a pleasure to join you as the new Editor of Trenchless Australasia for the final edition of the year.

I have been part of the Prime Creative Media team for two years - writing about the oil and gas industry during that time.

What a year it has been. Following 2020 where we spent the majority of the year in lockdowns and uncertainty, 2021 decided to follow suit. However, we are now, finally, starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Despite the No-Dig Down Under Conference being postponed this year, we are excited to be seeing you all in the new year on March 8-11, 2022 in Sydney for the postponed event. I am especially eager to attend, as it will mark my first trenchless event and allow me to finally put names to faces and learn more about the industry.

This edition of Trenchless Australasia features a cover story on Interlfow, which this year celebrated a significant milestone, with the company reaching 85 years’ of business. Throughout its vibrant history, the organisation has pioneered technologies and renewal methods that have received national and international recognition for their industry-leading status.

Despite the challenges 2021 threw at us, it appears to be the year of anniversaries, with the ASTT also celebrating 30 years of establishment. Who would have thought that a two-day seminar in 1989 would result in 170 delegates from around Australia and New Zealand agreeing that an independent Australian Society for Trenchless Technology should be formed.

But, here we are today, with ASTT the official voice for the trenchless community.

After writing the 30th anniversary book and this edition of the magazine, I have definitely come to learn more than I thought I would in the short-time I have been in the role. From the meaning of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to microtunnelling, and everything in between, there is never a shortage of terms to learn.

This edition you will see an array of features, including content on rehabilitation and repair, HDD and relining. Looking towards next year, the team here at Trenchless Australasia has even more themes to dive further into about the trenchless industry and provide insightful and thoughtleadership pieces from the sector.

As someone who is quite new to the trenchless community, it is inspiring to see so many new and old companies continue to work through these challenging times, and build towards a successful future. Let’s hope that 2022 is the year we finally are free and resume a sense of normality.

I wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and New Year, and look forward to seeing everyone in person again at No-Dig next year.

elcome to the December 2021 edition of Trenchless Australasia.

This issue brings to a close another year of this publication and what a year it has been. Like 2020, the continued effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has meant it’s not been without it’s challenges.

However, during my personal and the society’s interactions with our members and the wider industry, I have been heartened by the optimistic outlook and the ‘business as usual’ attitude which has been adopted over the last two years. Some have found it harder than others, and for them, I am sure 2022 promises to be a more positive one.

These challenges included the postponement of what was scheduled to be No-Dig Down Under 2021. While the situation was forced, with the majority of Australia and New Zealand in lockdown for a period of time, I was thrilled to see the overwhelming majority of the supporters of the event re-commit to the new dates in March in 2022.

Like many in the industry, I can’t wait to catch-up with old faces and meet the new additions to our industry – of which there are many – since the last No-Dig in Melbourne in 2019. While the exhibition has now sold out, if your company missed out on the opportunity to secure a stand then I would encourage you to register for the waitlist in the event space does become available. Failing

that, there’s always the option to register for the event as a delegate and attend our social functions, which are always a lot of fun and a great opportunity for networking.

Coinciding with No-Dig next year the frequency of this magazine will be increasing from quarterly to bi-monthly, reflecting the continued growth of the industry and the uptake of trenchless solutions. There’s more than enough news, project and products to sustain these additional issues and it also means the magazine will cover New Zealand and each major Australian state or territory once each year.

In addition, in 2022 each edition will incorporate and focus on a specific theme.

These include topics which are integral to our industry, such as women in trenchless technology, emissions reduction and safety.

Trenchless Australasia continues to be one of the world’s leading proponents of no-dig news and information, and these introductions for 2022 will only serve to solidify the publication’s international standing.

In the meantime, I wish you all the best for a prosperous and safe Christmas and New Year, and look forward to seeing you all in person in 2022!

Conference discounts for ASTT Members When you become a financial member of the ASTT there are several benefits on offer to you. One of these is a 10% discount on the Conference Registration fee. So, if you are thinking of attending the next National Conference this March in Sydney, then as a Gold Corporate Member, you are entitled to the 10 per cent discount for any 10 people from your organisation which is a considerable saving.

Should you decide that a Silver Corporate Membership is more to your liking, then this entitles the organisation to send any 5 people to the Sydney Conference with a discount of 10 per cent per person or if you are only interested in being an Individual Member, then you alone are entitled to the 10% discount.

In order to claim these discounts all you are required to do is provide the Conference Organisers with your membership number and they will then run that past me for final verification.

Melbourne Water awards contract to upgrade key sewer

The John Holland Group has been awarded a contract to carry out one of the largest upgrades to Melbourne Water’s sewerage network, creating over 20 jobs in the process.

The $200 million project will duplicate the Hobsons Bay main sewer, which is responsible for carrying more than 30 per cent of Melbourne’s wastewater to the Western Treatment Plant (WTP).

Works on this important upgrade will begin at Scienceworks early next year and the project is due for completion in 2024. Minister for Water Lisa Neville said this vital project highlights the state government’s commitment to delivering essential water infrastructure to support the city’s growing population.

“This sewer, originally built in the 1960’s and which runs under the Yarra River from Westgate Park in Port Melbourne to Spotswood, is integral to the Melbourne sewerage network,” Neville says.

Plans revealed for T2D Southern Tunnels The Federal Government has released plans for the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Southern Tunnels, which will see the completion of the motorway between Anzac Highway to Darlington, South Australia.

Stage One of the Torrens to Darlington project will include northern entry and exit points and a direct connection to Anzac Highway and includes 6 km of motorway, of which over 4 km is to comprise twin three-lane tunnels.

Jointly funded by the Australian and SA Governments, the project is estimated to reach $9.9 billion. When complete, around 60 per cent of the T2D Project will be comprised of underground tunnels.

Construction of the Southern Tunnels is expected to start in late 2023, with the entire 10.5km project to be completed – subject to planning, approvals and funding – in 2030.

Breakthrough on M4-M5 Link Tunnels

Westconnex M4-M5 Link Tunnels final breakthrough.

The final tunnelling breakthrough on the M4-M5 Link Tunnels has been competed, wrapping up a major construction milestone on the WestConnex project with roadheaders carving rock 43 metres below ground.

WestConnex is the largest infrastructure project in Australia, linking Western and South Western Sydney with the city, airport and port in a 33 km continuous motorway, predominantly via an underground motorway scheme.

The M4-M5 Link Tunnels are part of a $16.8 billion project to reduce travel times as the state reopens from COVID lockdowns, 14 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2021

and the final tunnel breakthrough on the M4 and M5 Tunnel Links marks part of the third and final stage of the project.

“This breakthrough isn’t just for a tunnel, but it’s a breakthrough for getting people home sooner and safer and helping workers to move around,” says Prime Minister Scott Morrison said. “As we reopen Sydney and Australia, projects like this bypass and our record $110 billion infrastructure investment are going to give our economy even more of a boost.”

CRL project charges on through Auckland lockdowns The City Rail Link (CRL) is New Zealand’s largest transport infrastructure project to date, made up of a 3.45 km twin-tunnel underground link up to 42 m below Auckland city centre. Works on the C1 contract at Britomart Station were completed back in October.

C1 was one of the earliest contracts for New Zealand’s largest transport infrastructure project to revitalise the city’s rail network.

According to operators, it was one of the most complex engineering challenges undertaken in the country.

In November, tunnel boring machine (TBM) Dame Whina Cooper started the second leg of its four-stage journey below Auckland streets. The TBM’s 785-metre-long drive from Karangahape Station to Aotea Station in the heart of Auckland’s midtown is planned to finish early in the new year. At Aotea, Dame Whina Cooper will be dismantled underground and returned to Mt Eden in sections, reassembled and then excavate the second rail tunnel in 2022.

Two roadheader machines, ‘Dame Valerie Adams’ and ‘Jean Batten’ have ended their work excavating Karangahape’s two platform caverns. The job was completed with the last breakthrough from the caverns into the ‘box’ where the Mercury Lane entrance to the station is being built.

2021 CCF National Earth Awards

The CCF has announced the winners of the 2021 Earth Awards.

Australia’s peak voice of the civil construction industry - the Civil Contractors Federation (CCF) - has announced the winners of the 2021 Earth Awards, recognising excellence in civil construction. The awards were hosted on Friday 12 November with attendants joining virtually from all over the country.

These awards are the most prestigious in civil infrastructure, and among this year’s projects recognised for excellence and innovation were many examples of trenchless methods and intelligent no-dig technologies.

Taking home the award for projects under $2 million, Interflow employed trenchless renewal methods to rehabilitate a deteriorated water main in the Mountain Highway in Mount Dandenong. Trenchless renewal was elected over traditional dig and replace methods because 16 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2021

of the unstable soil conditions across the steep slope, as well as the heavy local traffic.

For projects valued between $2 million and $5 million, Diona was recognised for its replacement works over 1 km of ancient mains for the Brisbane CBD Water Mains Renewal.

The design and engagement saved the client $1.3 million and was completed over 106 nights. Abergeldie and Downer & Stantec joint venture received first for its Hawthorn Main Sewer Rehabilitation in the category for projects valued between $10 million and $30 million.

The joint venture rehabilitated 1.8 Kim of 118-year-old brick sewer using cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) technology to renew manholes with depths up to 18 m.

This is something that has been characteristic of the organisation since its establishment. From day one, the organisation’s founder, Harold ‘Bill’ Weaver, was committed to ‘challenging the status quo’.

In 1936, Bill set out on a mission to support the growth of budding communities along the east coast of Australia through the construction of water, sewerage and drainage systems for developing towns. As a result of Bill’s ability to identify gaps in the market and develop

services to meet the needs of his customers, the company was able to expand its operations across the country.

Over the years, the leadership of Interflow has been handed down from father to son, for four generations.

A generation-led, family-owned business The organisation’s current Managing Director, Geoff Weaver, has been responsible for expanding Interflow’s operations across Australia, establishing international operations in New Zealand, negotiating two 20-year exclusive Australasian licenses for spirally wound rehabilitation products with long-standing partner, Sekisui Rib Loc Australia, and has taken a leading role in the development of trenchless technology.

Today, at 85-years young, Interflow has become Australia’s largest provider of trenchless pipeline solutions, earning the enviable track record of being the preferred delivery partner within its market.

Geoff says the company’s ongoing success has been guided by the steadfast core values laid out by his grandfather.

Trenchless bounces back in WA As COVID-19 continues to cause disruptions to states and their economies, infrastructure developments becomes increasingly important to drive economic recovery. As such, Western Australia has seen progress on many public sector infrastructure projects over the last few months in the water and transport sectors.

ipes for Perth Pipes for Perth is Water Corporation’s ongoing project to improve the security and reliability of Perth’s water supply. Under the program, works to replace historic pipelines supplying drinking water to East Fremantle, Palmyra and Bicton recently commenced, with completion anticipated for mid-2022.

The pipeline has been supplying the regions for nearly a century, with the oldest section first laid in 1923. The Pipes for Perth program has replaced over 200 km of water mains across the metropolitan area since 2016.

Water Corporation general manager of assets planning and delivery Evan Hambleton said that by proactively replacing these assets, the utility could safeguard against future leaks and bursts, in turn helping to avoid unplanned interruptions.

New mains for Perth’s first reservoir The WA Waste Minister announced upgrades to replace water mains at the historic Kaarta Gar-up reservoir as part of a state-wide investment in renewing water infrastructure. The reservoir was constructed in 1891 as Perth’s first reservoir, supplying water to the CBD and western suburbs.

and replacing water mains for Perth’s historic reservoir at Kaarta Gar-up (Mount Eliza) in Kings Park. Works involve replacing two ageing water pipe inlets, one of which is 94 years old, and the construction of a new regulating valve building, valve pit, and valve pit wall. The project is expected to be complete by early-2022.

METRONET reaches final stages The METRONET project has entered its final stages. During November, works began to relocate a sewer pressure main at the New Bayswater Station, while bulk earth works have charged ahead at Lakelands Station for the Thornlie-Cockburn link. Work has also started on the tunnel where the new Morley-Ellenbrook line will divert from the existing Midland Line.

With around 72 km of new passenger rail with 18 new stations, the METRONET will be the single largest investment in public transport Perth has ever seen once completed.

WA Premier Mark McGowan said the METRONET is important not only for the thousands of jobs it offers during construction phase, but for the jobs it will secure into the future as local areas develop over time.

Water infrastructure for West Bullsbrook The Morrison-Joyce government has delivered a plan for the provision of a long-term, sustainable water supply to the residents of West Bullsbrook, north of Perth.

Nicole Lockwood has been made WA’s new Infrastructure Board chairperson while inaugural member Terry Agnew has been appointed deputy chairperson. Rebecca Tomkinson, current chief executive officer of the Royal Flying Doctor Service in WA, has been appointed as a new board member. All positions were effective from October this year and will run until 23 July 2024.

Rangedale expands civil division Rangedale has launched a new service offering into its Civil Division - Concrete Remediation Range aiming to break into a new area in the trenchless industry.

s the company continues to prove itself as an industry leader for drain maintenance and rehabilitation across Victoria and New South Wales, Rangedale is taking its capabilities further.

The Rangedale Group first introduced its civil division in 2009 when the company was primarily doing collapsed sewer dig-outs for waterboards across Melbourne.

Rangedale civil operations manager Mick Fuller tells Trenchless Australasia the division has quickly developed and upskilled into becoming a recognised industry specialist for repairs to damaged sewers and stormwater pipes, and for constructing sewer pipe connections and extensions.

“Our civil team has the expertise, the experience, and the equipment to handle: dig-outs in excessive wet running sand and poor soil, plus closed timber sheeted up to 14 m deep, construction of new manholes, dewatering of excavation and bypass pumping of sewer lines,” says Fuller.

“As our team continued to expand into becoming civil specialists, we were soon incorporating more skills such as tunnelling under buildings, trees, laneways and utilities, asphalt work, concrete cutting, hydro excavation and repairing sewers with relining methods.

“We started looking in concrete rehabilitation products such as industrial epoxy coatings for new manhole structures to protect the life of these pipes and drains.

From here we’ve continued to expand this line of offering through our civil services which includes leak seal technology that seals 26 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2021

infiltration on various concrete structures and additionally a geo-polymer product to also rehabilitate deteriorated large diameter pipes as a structural liner.”

Fuller says the company currently has a strong focus on coatings and manholes, but is now wanting to add more products to expand its expertise.

“The main benefit and whole end-goal is to enhance the life of the customer’s assets nonintrusively. It is the trenchless way,” he says.

Fuller says with the technologies already there, the key is to work closely with partners and suppliers to get it out into the market effectively.

The Quick-Lock rehabilitation sleeve has revolutionised sewer rehabilitation, and is suitable for applications with all pipe materials and circumventing the need for chemicals.

This system is used in circular pipes starting at 100 mm up to 2000 mm in diameter. Featuring a stainless-steel sleeve and coated with an EPDM rubber gasket, the Quick-Lock system is transported to the repair spot pushed by a CCTV crawler.

Once in the correct position, the packer is inflated, and the machine’s patented mechanical locking device holds the sleeve firmly against the pipe, sealing the damage. The patented locking system ensures the sleeve remains in position in perpetuity.

The ring space between the liner and the old pipe is permanently sealed and the liner end is protected against the mechanical influences of high-pressure cleaning. Quick-Lock sleeves restore a pipe’s structural integrity and seal out groundwater, and they are carefully designed to minimise diameter loss and outlast any other rehab.

After rehabilitation, the sleeve has its own static capability and absorbs the natural tectonic

movements of the pipes. The product now has a swathe of satisfied users across the country.

James Pickup is the director of Australian Pipeline Management (APM). His company regularly employs SECA’s Quick-Lock systems for quick and easy point repairs on pipelines.

“We’ve used it successfully over various different contracts with a number of different clients, from councils to tier one projects to Transport NSW projects,” Pickup says.

“Some of the clients I worked with wanted an alternative repair method from what we previously used, and that’s when we started looking into the Quick-Lock system.”

Pickup says the efficiency and ease of installation of the Quick-Lock system is one of the main reasons the company has stuck with the solution. “A lot of the time, our projects are under traffic control – under ROLs – so repairs are very time sensitive.”

Quick-Lock is faster, and it doesn’t generate any waste. Pickup and his team recently used the system to seal junctions on a major piece of pipework.

“Part of the DA condition is that it needs to be sealed. Rather than digging it up, we can come in and seal that junction, preventing a lot of earth works and mechanical excavation to the area, saving clients a lot of time and money,” says Pickup.

“With the Quick-Lock system, we can come in within a short window and do what they need doing, and no one will have ever known we were there.”

Quick-Lock system fulfils the same requirements as a newly installed pipe system.

It restores the stability of the pipe as a cost-effective, long-term solution for pipe repair.

Hunter Water embraces Primus Line pipe relining technology More and more water utilities are taking advantage of the Primus Line system for its rehabilitation projects for pressure pipes. Hunter Water has even included the German technology in its portfolio as a standard renovation technology.

ädlinger first developed the Primus Line system in Germany 25 years ago, with the company making its first contacts with Australian asset owners in 2013.

Since its first installation in Australia, Primus Line has become the preferred solution for pipe rehabilitations in sensitive and difficult-to-access areas. Primus Line is a specialist technology for the trenchless rehabilitation of pressure pipes, appealing predominantly to water utilities as a preferred method due to its ability to navigate bends.

Primus Line’s director for Australia and New Zealand Heiko Manzke says the company also does not require access to the entire asset.

“Primus Line is characterised by the combination of flexibility and high material strength,” he says.

“This makes it possible to drive through bends of up to 45 degrees and at the same time realise installation lengths of over 1000 m in one section. All that is needed are small excavation pits or access shafts. The use of machinery and the intervention in the environment are minimal.”

The Primus Line system was recently used to rehabilitate a water main for a local utility in New South Wales. Hunter Water provides drinking water, wastewater, recycled water and some stormwater services to a population of almost 600,000 between homes and businesses across the Lower Hunter region.

state-owned corporation began with some initial site visits, followed by information sessions to improve understanding of the technology.

The first action was an emergency project for a sewage pressure line. The Primus Line technology demonstrated to Hunter Water its versatility.

On the utility’s next venture, Hunter Water took a new approach that previously hadn’t been seen in the Australian piping market: a multiliner solution.

Justin Watts, Hunter Water group manager for asset solutions, says there were a number of challenges surrounding the repair of the DN 900 MSCL watermain, which crossed beneath a highway off ramp.

“This main was a critical water supply to Newcastle and Lake Macquarie regions. Due to the timing of failure, a large number of visitors were expected to the region for the Newcastle 500 Supercars race, and, with increasing temperatures, a quick, nondestructive restoration was sought,” he says. “The Primus Liner’s ability to be installed through bends prompted Hunter Water to look at solutions using this product.

With a maximum product diameter of DN500, an engineering solution was required to ensure capacity was retained.”

To ensure best possible use, the utility service supplier chose the Primus Line 3-in-1 solution, executed by the proven Primus Lines partner Interflow. Installing three Primus Liners DN 450 PN 16 with an inner diameter of

396 mm would provide Hunter Water with a working capacity of nearly 60 per cent.

The section of the pipeline requiring rehabilitation was around 140 m. Austeck introduces revolutionary inspection system Austeck has introduced a new CCTV solution which promises to revolutionise pipeline inspection and condition assessment. The Troglotech T815 crawler system is battery-powered, making it safer, lighter, more robust and suited to the most extreme applications, from toxic environments to conditions 100 m below sea level.

The company has recently introduced another revolutionary CCTV product to the Australian and New Zealand market. The Troglotech T815 features the latest in battery tech, with all components running off removeable lithium-ion power cells, meaning it’s capable of extended operation times without the restriction of cables and external power generation.

The power source also means it’s lightweight, highly portable and economical to run. The coiler with fully integrated control centre running 300m of cable weighs around 17 kg, less than half the industry norm.

The tiny crawler only weighs about 5.5 kg but effortlessly pulls the full 300 m of cable which weighs only 4.5 kgs. More impressive however is that it can achieve four or five runs of 300 m from a single charge of the battery. No equipment or generators are required for operation and the absence of any power cables makes for an inherently safer, simpler and more robust system.

Thirty years of trenchless technology for Vermeer Australia In the 1970s, Gary Vermeer had a vision: if Vermeer could develop a machine that could dig in a manner similar to a mole tunnelling underneath a road, without opening up a trench, it would blow open the market, and make Vermeer an industry pioneer.

ver the next decade this vision became a reality, and the industry saw the potential impact this would have on underground construction.

The early days Vermeer has always had a culture of innovation.

In 1979, Vermeer introduced a simple rotary attachment (also known as a porta bore) that was used on small- to medium-size trenchers and vibratory plows for tunnelling underneath different rights-of-way and other obstacles.

It was a simple attachment that proved to be popular, as it saved time and money by eliminating the need to open-cut footpaths and driveways. After the introduction of the porta bore, Vermeer could further see the potential in underground infrastructure and trenchless technology.

Vermeer’s first HDD machines The first trenchless machines started to make their way into the Australian market in the 1990s, and the demand for this type of technology started to rise. The time was ripe for Vermeer to start designing its own trenchless machinery and put its stamp on this revolutionary product.

The first horizontal directional drilling (HDD) machine Vermeer introduced was the Navigator® HDD (which later became the D7 model) in 1991. It was a basic model that needed a significant amount of labour to set up and drill. Everything on these machines was a manual process.

Vermeer’s team spent a lot of time in the field staging demonstrations for customers, introducing them to this new technology and gathering on-the-ground feedback. In 1995 the second generation of self-contained HDD

drills was introduced to the Australian market – this was the defining moment for Vermeer, as it put its mark on this up-and-coming industry.

Rigs for jobs big and small The introduction of compact Vermeer HDDs in the late 90s and early 2000s, such as the D7X11 and D16X20, allowed for more versatility when working with differing ground conditions. When Vermeer introduced a smaller drill to the range, it opened up the market and offered more variety and versatility for those working with a fleet of HDDs, particularly on larger projects.

HDD technology has become more compact over the years, but it has not been at the expense of power. Customers can use compact machines on a larger job that might have tight access, but still expect the same drilling performance and output that the larger models offer.

Maxibor grows its maxi-rig fleet Maxibor’s fleet of maxi-rigs is designed to tackle drilling lengths of more than 1 km, and in challenging conditions such as river crossings and ocean outfalls.

here is increasing awareness among infrastructure asset owners that horizontal directional drilling (HDD) can provide an effective wholeof-life solution for the installation of pipelines.

Maxibor chief executive officer (CEO) and owner Rodney O’Meley provides insights into maxi-rig spreads and highlights their benefits on major projects across the various infrastructure sectors.

Maxi-rigs are HDD rigs required for the installation of pipelines with diameters between 400 mm and 1200 mm, and rated for more than 45,359 kg of thrust and greater than 9,072 kg of torque. There are four maxi-rigs in the Maxibor fleet: a Vermeer 330x500, American Auger 660, Gallagher 600 and Gallagher 660e.

The maxi-rig spread is a significant investment as it comprises much more than just the rig. A spread includes drill fluid cleaners, high volume pumps,

a mud mixer, vacuum trucks, rods, tooling and excavators. All add to the onsite cost of a spread, even before a rod is turned. The purchase cost of a new spread today would not leave much change from $8 million.

The mobilisation and demobilisation can require as many as 20 loads for a prime mover and trailer, which, over long distances, can pose a significant cost. A container of spare parts is also an essential part of the spread to minimise downtime and maintain productivity especially in more remote locations.

The knowledge and capacity of the HDD industry to take on more challenging projects in Australia is certainly there particularly where you have very experienced design and construct HDD providers like Maxibor.

This enables the integrated body of knowledge required to deliver the project to be involved from early design through to delivery and final commissioning and testing of the pipeline.

The length and diameter of pipelines that maxi-rigs can install will depend on the ground conditions and the pipe being installed. While they have the capacity to drill pipelines of more than 2 kms with diameters up to 1.6 m, typically maxi-rigs are used on projects around 500 m with bore diameters of + 600 mm.

Maxi-rigs are ideally suited for river crossings, ocean outfalls, hard rock conditions and multiple service bores requiring larger diameter holes.

Distance is not a problem and neither is force, as the power of the maxi-rigs and the pumps are more than sufficient to overcome the most difficult ground conditions, bore lengths or other design constraints.

Bore hole assembly (BHA) selection is also important as this will drive the rate of penetration of the drill head. Less stable ground conditions such as water charged sands and cobbles are overcome with good practice drill fluid management and, if necessary, the use of casing to support the bore hole.

Maxibor used its Vermeer 330x500 maxi-rig on a 1.320 km Logan City Council project, which connected the Greater Flagstone Priority Development Area with the Cedar Grove sewerage treatment plant. Maxibor designed and delivered a 1.320 km bore, installing 500mm of PE100 HSCR PN20 to a depth of over 50 m.

m section of water pipeline between Lamb and Macleay Islands in Queensland. Maxibor used one of its Vermeer 100x120s to complete the pilot hole and most of the reaming. The Vermeer 330x500 maxi-rig was then brought in to ream the bore hole to a 550 mm diameter and pull the DN400 PN20 pipe through.

Into 2022, Maxibor has several bores lined up for its maxi-rigs with distances in the 1.5 km to 2.5 km range. It is also working in the early design stage with various asset owners and principal contractors on other projects across Australia involving complex river and harbour crossings and outfall project challenges.

Maxi-rigs are selected for their ability to provide solutions to challenging infrastructure installation problems. Industry experts expect these to come to the fore in the current decade as climate change mitigation and adaptation measures grow increasingly necessary to protect against impact of severe climate events.

Electricity, telecommunications, water, sewerage and gas assets will be increasingly impacted by wind, fire, flood, erosion, drought and inundation. Many of these assets are vulnerable because of their age and above ground replacement or trenching is no longer a medium-term viable option.

With the ever-increasing congestion of utility services in metropolitan areas, the difficulties around installation are ever increasing. Maxirigs provide an ideal solution for installing new infrastructure assets such as data lines, charging stations and green hydrogen.

An exciting recent addition to the Maxibor fleet has been its electrified Gallagher HDD660e maxi-rig, informally known as ‘The Hulk’. The electrified spread comes with its own substation, which also connects to two

powerful Gardner Denver PZ9 pumps and a large Gallagher mud recycling system.

“We definitely pushed to get as many of our courses online as we could, and still with COVID-19 easing, we have that as a priority,” she says. “It makes it so much easier and accessible for our customers as it means they can be more flexible.”

Tonner says the training was provided for 10 people who were in London, Switzerland and Poland, with training sessions scheduled to work with different time zones.

“Wincan reached out and we designed this course specifically for them. We had it in mind and discussed doing it prior to the company contacting us, and once they reached out it encouraged us to get things finalised,” she says.

“It took us only a month or two as it was only an upgrade. Everyone logged in on our online platform for training (Asset Training Online) and it was a huge success.”

The SRP-EXP is a close-fitting structural, spiral ribbed PVC trenchless pipe lining system and is an ideal rehabilitation solution for deteriorated and degraded sewer and stormwater pipelines.

A liner pipe is formed in-situ by helically winding a PVC profile strip into a host pipe, usually from an existing access chamber. The spiral winding machine is positioned into an access chamber or pit, which then winds the SRP-EXP ribbed strip to produce a secondary pipe within the existing pipeline.

The system is first installed at a smaller diameter and then expanded to fit snuggly against the internal surface of the existing structure. Because the profile is initially set to a small diameter, it can ride over displaced joints and negotiate bends and damaged areas.

This relining product is available for asset profiles from DN150 to DN1200. The SRP-EXP profile strip is engineered with a dual action lock. During the initial windin process, this functions to hold the spiral wound pipe tight at the initial diameter.

When the total installation is reached, the SRP-EXP liner end is then torsionally restrained, with the lock area sequentially released such that the liner expands. The expansion is smooth and controlled before the lining is pressed hard against the pipe wall.

It is even possible to install the SRPEXP under live flow conditions. Flow control is generally not required during the installation process, thus avoiding any interruptions to the network.

The SRP-EXP also has a small site footprint. It is quick and easy to install, and it

doesn’t generate any waste.

This liner is designed in accordance with industry standards, such as ASTM F1741-08 (2016), to provide a stand-alone structural liner. SRP- EXP is available in a number of different profiles sizes to suit gravity pipe sizes from DN150 to DN1200, and is guaranteed to extend the life of your assets by at least 50 years.

Wilmot aims to be a leader in the trenchless sector.

Wilmot Pipelining delivers the largest UV liner installation Wilmot Pipelining has yet again showcased the company’s ability to deliver large scale complex infrastructure rehabilitation successfully, while breaking records along the way.

T

he team delivered what is already being labelled one of the most complex trenchless projects of 2021 in Australia.

The company delivered the emergency rehabilitation of the failed storm water culvert that collapsed during the flooding in March in a critical section of pipeline causing a giant sink hole, which meant the roadway had to be closed for residents’ safety until the repairs were completed.

The Wilmot engineering team worked closely with Brandenburger Liner in Germany to design and manufacture the custom structural liners for the culvert.

As soon as the team could safely access the sink hole area, Wilmot’s major works crew carefully excavated down on the sink hole and removed the collapsed section of the culvert.

A large shoring box was installed to make the site safe and the team gathered the site details for the engineering team to design the custom CIP UV liner for the site. The construction crew also diverted the flows so the site was safe until the liners arrived.

The design was complete and the order placed with the manufacturer.

Eight weeks later the custom liners arrived via ship from Germany. The Wilmot team re-established onsite and worked around the clock for a week on split shifts to install the liners.

The installation threw every possible challenge at the team who responded magnificently, staying composed under extreme pressure. Over 250 meters of DN1600 liner was installed over the week and the collapsed section of pipe reinstated.

The open sinkhole was backfilled, compacted and finished off. The Wilmot team displayed many techniques and much expertise to deliver this complex project for the client who was over the moon with the outcome.

This project has now put Wilmot Pipelining on the map in the trenchless industry in Australia as a true leader and powerhouse in the sector.

Outlined in the tender, the conduits to be rehabilitated are predominantly DN150 gravity mains with potential for some DN225 and DN300 gravity mains.

As part of the contract, IMPREG will rehabilitate 8 km of DN and 1 km of DN. Ellenrieder says the the project also involves a large civil component including installation of new manholes and digging up unrepairable sections of pipe.

Trenchless contractor delivers complete package Under deft project management, M. Tucker & Sons brought together all divisions of the business to deliver a holistic service on a Traralgon sewer rehabilitation.

Back in July, M. Tucker & Sons completed 780 m of 540mm sewer rehabilitation at a major manufacturing plant in Traralgon, Victoria. This project involved the use of all divisions in the company, from civil teams, cleaning and CCTV operators, traffic control to pipe relining.

Issues M. Tucker & Sons was required to rehabilitate 780 m of heavily deteriorated 540 mm sewer pipeline. The sewer was collapsed in sections, making it not only structurally compromised but also hazardous.

Manholes in the sewer required locating and raising, and the project was also hindered by high peak flows at unpredictable times.

M. Tucker & Sons only had a brief window in which to complete the works while causing minimal interruptions to the sewer network.

Solutions M. Tucker & Sons provided the client with a safe and cost-effective solution to alternative reconstruction. While the treatment plant maintained operations, the company provided a UV liner designed to Australian standards to rehabilitate the sewer while it was still on-line.

The company successfully completed all works on time with no interruptions or lost time.

Outcome The company installed 786 m of 5.8 mm GL16 IMPREG UV Liner over the course of nine 12-hour shifts, over a five-day period. The team worked tirelessly and seamlessly brought together all facets of the business to provide a true end-to-end service.

Works were installed under a 1 km long bypass setup with two vacuum trucks operating full-time for the duration of the relining works to manage groundwater infiltration.

13 Manholes were located raised and reinstated along the sewer, and two 5 m

deep sections of pipe were safely excavated and repaired, despite their difficult locations with intersecting utilities and poor ground conditions.

The project was completed safely, as planned, and delivered on time. The client was impressed with the level of safety consciousness, diligence and execution of the team of 20 that worked on the project.

The continuous heat and pressure promotes high bonding strength to the substrate, and also helps the resin penetrate the substrate, forming a strong anchor.

Typically, the liner takes an hour to corm a protective barrier in the manhole.

Flexible PCV bridges the potential cracks, while fibreglass reinforcement adds an element of added strength. Together, the layers stop soil seepage into the manhole.

CIPM liners also provides complete protection from corrosive gases. When wastewater breaks down, the bacteria in the system releases hydrogen sulphide as a byproduct. This gas converts to sulfuric acid, which is corrosive to concrete, steel, brick

and most other materials.

Rob Carr awarded next stage of Melbourne CBD sewer upgrade Microtunnelling expert Rob Carr has been awarded the design and construct contract for the next stage of Greater Western Water’s CBD Sewer Augmentation Project focused on Elizabeth Street in the centre of Melbourne. The new contract follows the contractor’s successful delivery of the project’s previous package of work on adjacent Lonsdale Street.

T

he Elizabeth Street Sewer Upgrade is the third stage of Greater Western Water’s four-stage $80 million program to expand Melbourne CBD’s sewer system capacity. It will see a new pipeline constructed, linking to the new sewers, under Lonsdale and Spencer Streets, which were completed in earlier projects in November 2020 and December 2018, respectively.

The 723 m pipeline will be formed from OD 820 glass reinforced pipe (GRP) installed via microtunnelling between 6 m and 9 m below Elizabeth Street. In addition, eight GRP manholes will also be constructed along the route.

The street is one of the busiest in the city, linking the historic Flinders Street Station with the Queen Victoria Markets, as well as accommodating three busy tram routes. As a result, the project will require intricate traffic management and planning to ensure the project remains continuously operational and minimises disruptions to the community.

Rob Carr’s East Coast Operations Manager Justin Croucamp says the team is looking forward to working closely with design partner SMEC and Greater Western Water to deliver this important infrastructure for Melbourne.

Speaking in November last year about the completion of the Lonsdale Street stage of the CBD Sewer Augmentation Project, Greater Western Water Managing Director Maree Lang called the completion of the previous stage a significant step towards securing service reliability for the future.

“With the existing sewer over 120 years old, the new sewer pipe will help cater for the growing demands of the Melbourne CBD now and into the future,” says Lang.

“We sincerely thank the thousands of city residents, workers and commuters who adapted to the changed conditions while we carried out construction along Lonsdale Street. Masters in microtunnelling deliver peninsula project amid trying times In the midst of COVID-19, L&D Micro Tunnelling was contracted to bore a length of 900 m for the Mt Martha Sewer Duplication to provide security for the region through seasonal spikes in sewage inflow.

&D Micro Tunnelling was established in 2015 by business partners Luke Lewis and Christopher Dean. The pair have worked together since 2011, when they were both working for R&C Davies Constructions as construction manager and head of microtunnelling operations respectively.

Combined, the pair have 20 years’ experience in the sewer and water industry, and both understand the need for precision and thoroughness in their line of work.

Today, their company offers a range of services including sleeve boring, free boring, pipe jacking and pilot auger boring, as well as specialist machine hire. Lewis and Dean specialise in high-accuracy laser guided boring, and the company also has three tunnel boring machines (TBMs) operating throughout Victoria with drill heads ranging from DN350 to 600 mm.

L&D used a free-boring method as ground conditions were self supporting.

L&D was recently awarded a drilling contract to carry out 900 m of tunnelling for the Mt Martha Sewer Duplication in Victoria by client Fulton Hogan, Delplant and Beca (FHDB). In November 2018, the Council of Mornington Peninsula Shire introduced its Wastewater Management Plan 2018-2023 to address the environmental and public health risks posed by residential and commercial wastewater.

The council invested millions into wastewater infrastructure projects to support population growth and protect assets through seasonal spikes in sewage inflows. Works on the Mt Martha Sewer Duplication commenced in January 2021, and the company used a free boring method to bore through sandy clay and rocky ground conditions to depths of 2 - 7 m.

The purpose of the duplication was to relieve the existing sewer, which was under pressure from the demands of the expanding local population.

Free boring was decided as the preferred method of boring because the clay ground profile was self-supporting, meaning it wouldn’t require more delicate methods of tunnelling.

While boring was mostly seamless, the deeper sections of the dig at around 7 m posed the greatest challenges, where reefy rock conditions plagued the earth.

The project took around four months to complete and was L&D’s third project for the Fulton Hogan joint venture - testament to the company’s tried and tested methods.

L&D installed 280 HDPE & 376mm HOBAS GRP jacking pipe. The Poly line was welded into full strings along the length of each bore. Once the team had broken through with the drill head, the contractors extracted the head from the retrieval shaft and attached a pull-back tool to install the pipe as they retracted their rods. Centralising clips were installed every metre on the pipe to create an annulus so the pipe could be grout-filled in place after installation.

Cofounder Chris Dean said he was proud of his company’s ability to deliver the project on time and without complication, despite operating under COVID conditions.

In 2020, industry giant Pezzimenti Trenchless used kwik-ZIP spacers to facilitate the slip lining of a watermain for the Holden Reservoir Inlet Pipeline in Melbourne.

Kwik-ZIP HDX-90 spacers were installed to facilitate the slip-lining of an 813 mm cement-lined steel water main into a steel encasing pipe.

Spacers were installed around the circumference of the DN1200 polyethylene (PE) pipeline to ensure it was centred, while pulling the pipeline through 100 m of existing concrete duct.

he Australasian Society of Trenchless Technology (ASTT) is a non-profit organisation comprising of members throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The successful establishment of the trenchless industry in Australasia has been supported and promoted by the peak industry organisation, the ASTT, since it was established in 1991.

The society works tirelessly to promote the use of trenchless technology in Australasia, lobbying government and client organisations to highlight the advantages of using trenchless technology and the benefits of training for industry.

Membership is open to all who are concerned with the provision of gas, water, sewerage, drainage, roads, telecommunications and electrical services.

ASTT membership provides trenchless professionals the tools and services they need to be better informed and better connected in this industry.

The ASTT is part of the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT), an affiliation of societies in more than 30 countries worldwide.
