he more things change, the more they stay the same. This time last year, we were counting ourselves lucky that 2020 wasn’t a No-Dig Down Under year, with the thought being that Australia would be on top of the COVID-19 pandemic by the time the event rolled around in 2021.

But alas, this year we find ourselves in the all-too-familiar territory of lockdowns and heavy restrictions. The situation in New South Wales is of particular concern, with new cases rising to more than 1,000 per day at the time of writing. As a result, the No-Dig team has had no choice but to postpone the event and it will now take place from 8-11 March 2022.

Although we’ve all learned the hard way that nothing is guaranteed in a COVID world, hopefully by the time the new dates roll around Australia’s vaccination program will allow in-person events to go ahead without disruption and we can all attend safely.

Despite the lockdowns and delays, I’m happy to say that Herrenknecht has now come on board as a Gold Sponsor of No-Dig in 2022. The company is a true expert in its field and has played a major part in an abundance of vital trenchless projects across Australia and New Zealand.

This latest resurgence of this virus has greatly impacted our industry and homes lives once more. The ASTT wishes you the best as you negotiate your way around the pandemic impacts.

Unfortunately, our scheduled No-Dig Down Under Conference & Exhibition planned for October in Sydney this year has been delayed and re-scheduled for 8-11 March 2022, with the event to remain in Sydney.

ISTT Trenchless Asia & International No-Dig 2021 Kuala Lumpur The ISTT have advised that due to Malaysian regulations concerning the COVID-19 pandemic, Trenchless Asia: the

38th International No-Dig 2021 scheduled for November 2021 has been rescheduled yet again to 27-28 July 2022 in Kuala Lumpur. Because of this date change, the ISTT has decided that the 2022 Trenchless Asia conference will no longer be the 38th International No-Dig. This is due to the proximity to the International No-Dig in October 2022 in Helsinki, which will now be the 38th International No-Dig. Technical Conference All the authors of the technical papers have a right to choose the option to keep the entry for 2022 Trenchless Asia, or to transfer the submittal to Helsinki. Westrade will be contacting each author.

No-Dig Award All the previous entries from 2020 will be carried forwarded to 2022. ISTT has already contacted each author. Also due to this change, there is now a new deadline of 1 July 2022 for submissions. The awardgiving ceremony will be held in Helsinki in October 2022.

Western Australia – Trevor Gosatti On 3 August 2021, Water Minister Dave Kelly announced the official completion of the Albany to Denmark pipeline. A 43 km pipeline has been constructed to connect Denmark to Lower Great Southern Towns Water Supply Scheme (LGSTWSS). The pipeline was installed using horizontal directional drilling, or trenchless construction, to mitigate impact on natural resources. Horizontal directional drilling was used to go under Quickup and Hay rivers without impacting the natural waterways.

The trenchless industry was saddened to learn of the passing of Menno Henneveld on 6 June 2021. While I know that Menno’s passing has been mentioned in more detail elsewhere in Trenchless Australasia, I just wanted to reinforce Menno’s contribution to Western Australia in a short note.

Menno was the inaugural Chairman of the ASTT who dedicated a significant proportion of his working life to both trenchless technology and the ASTT. His interest in trenchless technology led to the formation of the ASTT and saw Menno become the inaugural chairman of the Australian (later Australasian) Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT), which spanned a period from 1991 till 2012.

Menno was the WA Councillor for the ASTT from its formation in 1991 up to my appointment in 2007. It was then my honour to take over the ASTT Chairmanship when he sought to step down in 2009. I saw first-hand the contribution he made to the trenchless industry in WA. He went on to also contribute to the ISTT, being on the Executive Subcommittee and fulfilling roles of Vice President and President of the ISTT. In WA, Menno also made a large contribution to the civil construction industry, through his work at the Water Corporation of WA, Main Roads of WA (where he was the Commissioner of Main Roads) and the civil engineering community in general. He received many awards and commendations for his contributions to industry.

On a personal note, it was an honour to work with Menno and see his passion for the trenchless and civil construction industries.

Victoria – Justin Shepherd Despite the economic impacts of another two COVID-19 lockdowns, the trenchless industry has been relatively unaffected in Victoria, with projects advancing and new installations associated with Victoria’s Big Build kicking off. The preferred contractor for the North East Link Project main tunnel package has been announced, adding momentum to the early utility relocation packages.

The Yarra East Main Sewer relocation works are progressing well with involvement from Quinn Civil and Bothar Boring. Three of four major pipe-jacking drives of 1,500-1,800 mm ID (to total 1,800 m) using two MTBMs have now been completed and the 1 km of new reticulation sewers (DN250-DN450 mm) using the Vermeer AXIS boring system are underway.

Rob Carr has completed two DN900 pipejacking drives of 185 m and 199 m and now installing 6 manholes at Berwick on behalf of Fulton Hogan for the Clyde Road Level Crossing Removal Project. In addition to building assets, Rob Carr’s Senior Management Team have been building interest for a potential new generation of trenchless professionals through microtunnelling presentations at the Holmesglen Institute Victorian Tunnelling Centre.

To Melbourne’s north, the Ventia Jaydo JV have been constructing Yarra Valley Water’s 9 km long Lockerbie Main Sewer and have reached a significant milestone with all six pipe-jack tunnel drives (total 2.7 km) completed

by Bothar’s two AVN1200 MTBMs. The project is now focusing on completing its final GRP manhole installations and on track for completion over the next few months.

During July, Interflow sprang into action in Melbourne’s Western Suburbs following heavy rainfalls for the emergency relining of a collapsed DN600 concrete sewer pipeline. After setting up a temporary bypass to secure the network operations and avoid sewage spill, the crews removed rock, rubble and debris from the collapsed main and relined it with Ribloc Expanda Spiral lining.

New South Wales – Matthew Boyle I don’t think anyone was expecting what we have experienced in NSW in the past two months. COVID-19 restrictions including the suspension of construction work has impacted the entire state and many of our members are navigating challenges of stay-at-home orders, restricted local government areas and client requirements. It was with great regret that the current outbreak has caused us to postpone the No-Dig Down Under until March 2022. We will continue our preparations to ensure this event is ready to go once we are all out of lockdown. It is great to see many of our member leading construction in a responsible way and I congratulate all in following the public health orders to help end the outbreak.

Auckland, New Zealand.

Works on hold for Auckland supercity COVID-19 restrictions have put the breaks on two of Auckland’s major infrastructure development projects – the City Rail Link and the Central Interceptor.

Watercare commenced works on the Central Interceptor project in Māngere in July, with the 14.7 km sewer tunnel to run from Grey Lynn to the Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant and expected to be completed in 2025. Once completed, it will be the longest bored wastewater tunnel in New Zealand. According to the Executive Program Director Shayne Cunis, the project came to a halt in late August due to recent COVID-19 outbreak.

Mr Cunis says that under the public health response legislation, basic operations were still permitted, but expects the project’s operations to be able to return to “normal” when Auckland shifts to alert level 3. Greater onsite restrictions for staff will still be in place after the alert level is downgraded, with workers having to maintain social distancing and onsite “bubbles”. He says the latest lockdown will affect the time it takes to complete the project, but he remains confident it can still be delivered on budget. Across town, developments on the $4.4 billion City Rail Link have also been stalled. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) says they are unable to confirm what operations will look like for the CRL and Central Interceptor projects under level 3 restrictions.

Third TBM joins METRONET project ‘Jana’ will be operated by tunnelling specialist Rob Carr with works expected to take place through September. Western Australia Minister for Transport, Planning and Ports Rita Saffioti announced the arrival of tunnel boring machine (TBM) ‘Jana’ on the METRONET Thornlie-Cockburn Link Project in August. TBMs ‘Grace’ and ‘Sandy’ have already been busy at work constructing the Airport Line underground. Jana will be used to drill twin 100 m tunnels under the freight rail corridor near Ranford Road Bridge, which falls under the Thornlie-Cockburn Link project as part of the METRONET project. The machine will be operated by tunnel-boring expert Rob Carr, with work expected to take place through August and September. The TBM is 3.5 m long and weighs 27 t, and was named after 13-year-old Coogee resident Jana Edmondson. Ms Edmondson has cerebral palsy, and according to her father Paul, her favourite activity is riding the train to Perth and interacting with the other passengers. Jana was one name selected out of more than 1,300 entries.

TBMs are traditionally given female names for good luck in honour of the patron saint of underground workers, Saint Barbara, who is believed to bring success to the project.

METRONET was a key election promise from the newly-reelected McGowan Labor government. It includes 72 km of new passenger rail and up to 18 new stations, encompassing a rail link from the Perth airport to Forrestfield in the southeast and an extension to Yanchep in the north, among other projects.

The $1.86 billion project is expected to be operational in the first half of 2022.

Water security package includes pipeline upgrades McGowan Government has announced it has secured $20 million in Commonwealth funding towards a package to improve regional water security. The projects will support farmers in dealing with the consequences of climate change and reduced rainfall. The funding is delivered through the Commonwealth’s National Water Grid Fund Connections pathway and will go towards the $43.8 million package for the state. The McGowan Government said it had advocated for WA farmers for close to 12 months to secure this funding. The projects that will be delivered under the package will include desalination projects, dam catchment improvements, and infrastructure and pipeline upgrades to increase water storage capacity.

Pipeline improvements will be included in the $16.5 million budget for Water Corporation projects, taking place between Katanning and Kojonup. Collectively, these benefits will increase water security and help restore resilience in the farming communities.

“I’m very pleased to see that the McGowan Government’s lobbying efforts have been successful in securing this $20 million in Commonwealth funding for WA farmers,” says WA Water Minister Dave Kelly. “By funding these projects, we will increase the water storage capacity of many WA agricultural communities and provide more reliable emergency agricultural and livestock water supplies for farmers to use during periods of dry conditions when on-farm supplies have been depleted.”

Inaugural TasWater CEO steps down TasWater Chair Dr Stephen Gumley announced in August that Michael Brewster will be stepping down as inaugural CEO after eight years in the position. “Michael has provided extraordinary leadership and service to the water and sewerage sector in Tasmania,” says Dr Gumley. In 2013, following the largest economic reform undertaken in Tasmania, Mr Brewster was appointed TasWater CEO, leading the organisation and the transfer of more than 600 staff and $2 billion in water and sewerage assets. In 2016, Mr Brewster oversaw a multimillion-dollar plan to remove the remaining Public Health Alerts from water supplies in 24 regional towns across Tasmania. “Under his direction, the team delivered a reduction in service interruptions and sewage spills, and improvements in water quality, service delivery and sewage compliance, to name a few,” says Dr Gumley.

In 2017, Mr Brewster played a significant role in laying out the framework that would underpin the Memorandum of Understanding between government, councils and TasWater.

In 2019, he oversaw the establishment of TasWater’s Capital Delivery Office to deliver its 10-year, $1.8 billion capital works program. Mr Brewster will remain in the role as TasWater CEO until February 2022. The board has begun the process of appointing a new CEO and the position will be advertised.

43km Denmark pipeline completed On 3 August, Western Australia Water Minister Dave Kelly announced the official completion of the $25 million Albany to Denmark pipeline. Denmark’s water supply has been heavily impacted by climate change, and according to Water Corporation, the region has experienced increasingly dry decades since records began in 1911. Between 2014 and 2019, Denmark recorded four of its five driest winters on record. Rainfall is becoming an increasingly less reliable source of year-round drinking water. To secure the town’s water supply, a 43 km pipeline has been constructed to connect Denmark to Lower Great Southern Towns Water Supply Scheme (LGSTWSS). The project began in September 2019 with construction commencing July 2020, following the appointment of local contractor Georgiou. The pipeline was installed using horizontal directional drilling, or trenchless construction, to mitigate impact on natural resources.

An average of 400 m of pipe was installed each day, or 2 km per week. The pipeline is not expected to be required until next year due to the current dam levels and the above-average rainfall the region experienced this year.

Mr Kelly said that this winter’s heavy rainfall was an anomaly, and the last time the dam was full at this time of year was 2005. Environmental targets were exceeded through construction, with a 42 per cent reduction in vegetation clearance and all black cockatoo habitat intact. The project was a collaboration between Water Corporation, Shire of Denmark, City of Albany, Main Roads, Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, and head contractor Georgiou.

Ballarat CBD sewer line installed Ballarat’s two largest sewer lines, Ballarat East and Ballarat South, were constructed almost 100 years ago. These sewer lines are now in the process of upgrade, where both will be duplicated over the next 3-5 years with the new lines installed parallel to the existing sewer.

Central Highlands Water (CHW) has invested $25 million into the major project, and the upgrade is intended to service the Ballarat community for another 100 years.

Stage one of the project commenced in mid-Aril 2021 with open excavation and microtunnelling in the CBD area.

Microtunnelling techniques were used where possible to minimise ground disturbance; however, attempts at Little Bridge Street were unsuccessful due to ground conditions and excavation was instead necessary. CHW was to install a 600 mm diameter sewer pipe 4.5 m beneath Peel Street, from Scott Parade to Little Bridge Street. CHW announced the completion of the CBD section on Friday 8 August, with construction now continuing on Peel Street heading south. CHW Project Manager Mick Dwyer says the work on the CBD section had been both crucial and challenging. “This critical section through the Ballarat CBD was always going to be one of the most complex, due to the proximity of Peel Street businesses to the sewer path plus the difficult ground conditions beneath the surface.

The need to change our approach at the Little Bridge Street intersection was unforeseen, even with the significant amount of investigation works completed prior.”

The rise of land development and rapid evolution of urban environments has seen a greater need for innovative waste management solutions. Hydrovac is becoming an increasingly popular solution in civil engineering and infrastructure construction processes, and it is also the favoured method for pipework installation.

Slurry is the by-product of hydro excavation processes. Made up of water and solids, it is difficult for operators to dispose of in landfill due to its weight and solid/liquid composition.

Waterlogged, thick mud is cumbersome due to its high volume and weight, with landfill sites increasingly reluctant to accept bulky waste. Burying waste can also be both legally and environmentally problematic.

GN has produced a closed loop system for recovering solids and reducing water consumption. The purpose of the system is to turn environmentally contaminating slurries into reusable soil and clean water.

GN’s slurry treatment solution deviates from a conventional take-make-waste model, participating in a circular economy by removing waste entirely, converting it into

useable product. Dealing with slurry insitu removes the risk of having to transport potentially toxic substances and GN’s effective dewatering solution allows for the recovery of reusable material.

The slurry processing solution uses liquid and solids separation equipment to treat soil or slurry generated from the hydrovac or horizontal directional drilling (HDD) projects.

It generates a reusable material for construction and discharges clean, reusable water.

The solution is non-destructive and precise, using pressurised water and an industrial strength vacuum. As the pressurised water breaks up the soil it creates a slurry that is removed by a powerful vacuum into a debris tank.

The hydrovac truck collects the aggregate base and soil materials through the vacuum, and the company’s standard hydrovac slurry separation system generally includes a scalping shaker, fine shaker, desilter and decanter centrifuge.

The shale shakers (equipped with different mesh sizes for separation of a variety of particles), desilters (for separation of fine

particles) and the decanter centrifuge (to treat slurry into clear water) all separate the solids from the water, sorting them into different sized particles.

GN’s slurry treatment solutions do not contaminate the environment. By turning waste material into useable water and soil, revenue can be generated by selling the separated useable biproducts. Up to 85 per cent of stones, sand and silts can be sized and recovered and converted into profitable construction materials.

Main components Here are the main treating components for GN’s separation process: •G N catch hopper The catch hopper allows two hydrovac trucks to dump at the same time without having to wait in line. Open wire mesh fixed on the top of the hopper holds the large stones or strays from falling off and through the automatic gate valve, while high pressure flushing nozzles around the hopper keep it from blocking.

•G N coarse shaker Slurry falls into the GN coarse shaker first, which is equipped with long screen panels to allow the slurry enough time to stay above. Big particles, like gravel, pebbles or aggregates are removed, then transferred by a conveyor belt.

•G N fine shaker A VFD submersible pump feeds the slurry through the coarse shaker into the GN double deck fine shaker. By using large mesh screens on the upper deck and small mesh

ones on the bottom deck, the GN fine shaker treats the slurry twice and removes sand.

•G N desilter The GN desilter uses multiple 4 inch (101 mm) cyclones to treat the liquid from the GN fine shaker. Fed by another submersible pump, the desilter can recover most of the solids larger than 25 microns. A GN ViST unit can be provided as an optional reinforced separation unit, to recover more than 10-15 per cent of solids.

•G N decanter centrifuge As the key treating equipment, the GN decanter centrifuge runs at a high rotating speed to eliminate solids larger than 2-5 microns. The centrifuge bowl and screw propeller both rotate in the same direction but at different speeds due to the density difference.

Solids are forced to the outer inside ring of the bowl and pushed out from the solids discharge port where tungsten carbide inserts are used for protection against long-term wearing, and liquid leaves in the centre before they are flushed from the drain outlet.

For a better treating performance, a chemical dosing unit can also be used to feed flocculants together with the slurry into the centrifuge. All these components are designed in a compact modular structure, easy and fast to connect and relocate. Working parameters can be changed easily in a centralised control system, and alarms are monitored from a human-machine interface (HMI) screen.

NSW rolls on through COVID storm New South Wales has been hit harder by the latest outbreak of COVID-19 than the rest of Australia in the past six months; however, a strong pipeline of significant and essential projects has ensured many in the trenchless sector can keep work ticking over at a steady pace.

Western Sydney Airport Metro approved Tunnel boring machines are expected in the ground by the end of 2023 after the Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport project received planning approval from the NSW Government in July 2021. Major construction is scheduled to commence in the coming months, with tunnelling contracts awarded by the end of the year.

A total of 23 km of driverless metro will service western Sydney and the new Western Sydney International Airport between St Marys Station and the future Western Sydney Aerotropolis in Bringelly. The new railway line will become the transport spine for Greater Western Sydney, connecting communities and travellers with the new Western Sydney International Airport.

The railway line is expected to transport up to 7,740 passengers each hour in each direction and it is anticipated the new infrastructure could take 110,000 vehicles off local roads each day, significantly reducing traffic congestion.

The project will support 14,000 jobs, including 250 apprentices.

Byron Bay undertakes $1.4m network upgrade Major upgrades to the region’s stormwater drainage network commenced on Monday 9 August. The Byron Shire Council has provided a $1.4 million grant from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and 28 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA SEPTEMBER 2021

Community Infrastructure Program to upgrade Byron Bay’s stormwater drainage network, which covers across Lighthouse Road, Paterson Street and Kipling Street.

“We are very excited to be delivering these critical works, which include the construction of kerb and gutter and underground stormwater drainage on Lighthouse Road,” says Byron Shire Council Director of Infrastructure Services Phil Holloway.

These works will reduce stormwater runoff that currently impacts Clarkes Beach, mitigating the impact to the environment. Mr Holloway says that once upgraded, the stormwater network will capture, detain and that runoff from the roads and surrounding properties.

The works are expected to take four months to complete.

Planning approval granted for potential desalination plant and pipeline In August, the New South Wales Government approved Hunter Water‘s plans for a desalination plant at Belmont as a drought response measure, with the project to include pipeline installed under the ocean floor using trenchless technology as far as 1 km offshore.

The plans are a reaction to water storage levels in the Lower Hunter, which recently reached its lowest point in nearly 40 years.

The plant is designed to produce up to 30 million L of drinking water per day in response to drought.

This follows in the wake of the most recent drought of 2019-2020, which saw the introduction of water restrictions for the first time in decades. The Hunter Water team worked closely with the NSW Government, key stakeholders, and the local community, and planning approval was issued yesterday by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.

The desalination plant, once constructed, will receive direct ocean seawater intake by piping seawater from 1 km offshore.

The intake structure would be installed at a depth of approximately 20 m, extending 5 m above the ocean floor, and the pipeline will be installed under the ocean floor via a trenchless tunnelling method.

Hunter Water Managing Director Darren Cleary says desalination is one of the few water supply options that is not dependent on rainfall.

This would mean that with the construction of a plant, Hunter Water could continue to supply communities irrespective of changes in weather or climate.

While the likelihood of having to construct the plant is low, it was imperative that Hunter Water sought planning approval, should it need to build in the near future.

“Planning approval for the Belmont desalination plant gives us an additional tool to help close our supply gap during periods of drought, providing Hunter Water with the capacity to provide up to an additional

Hunter Water says the project approval was supported by comprehensive environmental impact investigations, which evaluated the potential impacts that could be mitigated through detailed design and delivery. These assessments found that a trenchless method would have the least significant impact on marine life, while the intake would also be designed to reduce the chance of marine life being drawn into the pipeline.

Construction of the desalination plant could take three years.

Australia’s longest road tunnel canvassed In May, the NSW Government announced it was investigating the possibility of constructing an 11 km tunnel through the Blue Mountains.

The project would connect two proposed tunnels into a longer tunnel as part of the Greater Western Highway upgrade between Katoomba and Lithgow.

NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole says linking the two tunnels already determined for Blackheath and Mount Victoria would deliver a more reliable connection through the Blue Mountains.

“The NSW Government knows how important this upgrade is to the people who use the Great Western Highway every day and in improving connections between Sydney and the Central West, which is why we committed $2.5 billion to deliver a once-in-a-generation upgrade to this key corridor,” he says.

“As part of this upgrade, we’ve already committed to a 4.5 km tunnel to bypass Blackheath and a 4 km tunnel underneath Victoria Pass, one of the steepest roads in NSW. We’re now investigating connecting those two

proposed tunnels into one longer tunnel.

“This would be a history-making project, delivering Australia’s longest road tunnel and allow motorists to avoid all the current pinch points from Blackheath in the east to Little Hartley on the western side of Victoria Pass. It will also mean less disruption for local residents and businesses during construction and a smoother, safer journey for those travelling underneath Blackheath and Mount Victoria as well as those travelling above.”

The government says construction on the Great Western Highway Upgrade is expected to start at Medlow Bath in 2022, with the full upgrade expected to be completed within 8 to 10 years.

Harbour project deemed national priority In June, the proposal for a second Sydney Harbour tunnel listed as a national priority

project by Infrastructure Australia. The Western Harbour Tunnel and Warringah Freeway Upgrade was added to the Infrastructure Priority List as a Priority Project, with the proposal from the NSW Government involving the construction of a 6.5 km twin three-lane motorway from the Rozelle Interchange to the Warringah Freeway near North Sydney.

The Warringah Freeway between the northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Willoughby Road would also be upgraded.

Infrastructure Australia Chief Executive Romilly Madew says constructing the new tunnel would be beneficial economically and for the community.

“The Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel are critical transport links – carrying more than 250,000 vehicles each weekday as people travel into the CBD and through to other parts of the city,” she says.

“By 2031, this is expected to increase to 300,000 as Sydney’s population grows.

Without an additional harbour crossing, we expect there to be additional traffic and delays around the Sydney CBD. Apart from impacting community access to school, work and other essential services, our 2019 Australian Infrastructure Audit found that if not addressed, congestion on this part of the road network could cost the NSW economy more than $780,000 per day by 2031.

“The business case developed by the NSW Government demonstrates a wide range of benefits for both drivers and public transport users, including significant travel time savings and improvements in travel time reliability.”

HDI Lucas stays tuned in on Channel Island Spiecapag and subsidiary HDI Lucas were engaged by APA Group to deliver complex horizontal directional drilling works as part of the Channel Island Bridge Pipeline Replacement Project in the Northern Territory. Despite a variety of challenges onsite, the team was able to deliver the works on time, within budget and with an unblemished safety record.

he Channel Island Power Station is the largest facility of its kind in the Northern Territory and is the Darwin and surrounding region’s primary power generator. The facility is powered by natural gas from APA Group’s Amadeus Gas Pipeline (AGP) which is attached to the side of the existing Channel Island Bridge.

The section of the AGP attached to the bridge is narrower in diameter than the rest of the pipeline and does not allow in-pipe inspections tools to be used to monitor the ongoing integrity of the infrastructure. For this reason, APA saw the need to replace this section with a section of pipe the same diameter of the existing pipeline to ensure the integrity of the entire line could continue to be upheld.

The Channel Island project called for a 1.4 km HDD with an 18 inch (457 mm) hole and a 12 inch (304 mm) product pipe, while the location of the entry and exit points of the HDD were designed to be collocated, where feasible, with the existing Channel Island Road to minimise disturbance to mangrove unities fringing Darwin Harbour.

Not without its challenges, the drilling was completed through hard rock conditions and seven machines were required on the breakover for pullback. HDI Lucas says its focus was always on safety and commended the efforts of the project’s leadership team in getting the job done.

“Well done to Project Manager Orla Gallagher, HDD Superintendent John Keatinge, Construction Manager Kieran Mullane, Nick Sargent and Bryce Webb with the successful pullback on one of the most difficult projects we have completed in Darwin, Northern Territory,” the company says.

“200 mpa+ rock, compound curve, 1,300 m+ drill length and minimum radius for installation were many of the challenges that the team had to plan for. A focus on keeping everyone safe every day has been the key to making this project a success.”

In March, microtunnelling expert Rob Carr was awarded a contract to deliver the Quinns Main Sewer Extension for Water Corporation in Western Australia. In terms of scale, the project is one of the biggest the company has undertaken in the state.

W

ater Corporation of Western Australia awarded Rob Carr a design and construct contract to extend the Quinns Main Sewer, which allows conveyance of wastewater flows from Ellenbrook, running through Clarkson and Neerabup National Park to the Alkimos wastewater treatment plant.

“The existing infrastructure can’t handle the expected calculated future flows in the area,” explains Rob Carr Western Australia General Manager Barry Crowley.

Mr Crowley has worked with the company for 20 years, and, under his leadership, the team has installed hundreds of kilometres of main sewers throughout Western Australia.

This project involves 2 km of 1,800 mm diameter sewer main. The extension adds on to Stage 1 of the Quinns Main Sewer project, which was completed more than ten years ago.

“The purpose of Stage 2 is to extend across that area through the national park so development upstream of that area can occur, be it residential, commercial or industrial,” says Mr Crowley.

The project will use a combination of microtunnelling and

open trench techniques, with Rob Carr successful in making some innovative changes to the brief for the future delivery of works.

“The preliminary design had a requirement for 764 m open trench and 1.173 km of tunnelling,” says Senior Project Manager Paul Lee. “We’ve changed that through the design to 1.4 km of tunnelling and 537 m of open trench.”

This innovation combined with Rob Carr’s extensive capability in successfully delivering large diameter microtunnelling projects in challenging ground conditions were two of the reasons Rob Carr was awarded the contract.

“During the bid process and design evolution, we’ve managed to get more tunnelling on the project and less opening trenching works, which results in less impact for surrounding resident street access. From a design aspect it made more sense to do it that way,” says Mr Crowley.

“It reduces the volume of spoil, eliminates reinstatement works, and it’s friendlier to the overall community.”

Much of the eliminated open trench work was to take place in residential areas, and Rob Carr wanted to minimise the potential impact to the community during the design phase and construction.

The company was also successful in its suggestion to include local content.

“When we put in our bid to Water Corporation, their preliminary design was based around the use of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) jacking pipe and open trench installation,” says Mr Crowley.

“We put in alternative bid for the use of reinforced concrete

jacking pipe, which is sourced locally from Humes. That was something the corporation recognised and acknowledged as the preference for the construction and design element.

“That way we achieved our recognised local content and supported local business.”

In terms of scale, the Quinns project is substantially greater than previous projects in the region.

“In diameter, it is significantly larger than what has predominantly been required in Western Australia. The last time there has been an 1,800 mm diameter pipe installed here was 11 years ago,” says Mr Crowley.

“We don’t have the population, therefore we don’t require the diameters the east coast would. Up to DN1200 is usually the diameter used here; so, it is designed for future growth.”

Currently, the project is still in the design phase with limited activity onsite. Rob Carr expects design to be completed in October, with onsite construction likely to begin in February 2022 and running for 12 months.

The depth of the new sewer ranges between 3.5 and 27 m below ground and, while the team has no grave concerns for the future of the project, it will still be an intricate process.

“The construction of the 27 m deep shaft and converting that into a permanent vortex structure is quite intricate and complex,” says Mr Crowley.

“That will be one of the more challenging parts of the construction of the works.”

The Quinns Main Sewer project will also require the installation of six other sewer

manholes. The team at Rob Carr said it is looking forward to working closely with design partner SMEC and client Water Corporation WA as the project progresses to its construction phase.

Bohrtec machine guides sewer works with Pilot tube and FrontSteer method A vital sewer main installation in New South Wales was made possible through the technical superiority of Bohrtec’s guided auger boring machines.

I

n 2019, Downer Pipetech was engaged by Sydney Water to install 870 m of 226 mm uPVC sewer main for the future developments in the Spring Farm residential area of NSW. With the project requiring the completion of 10 under bore sections, Downer engaged auger boring specialist Bortec Laser Bore from Narellan NSW, which uses machines from expert German supplier Bohrtec.

During consultations with experts from Germany, it was noted that geotechnical reports indicated displaceable soft sand, non-displaceable stiff clays and soft sandstone would be encountered. These ground

conditions suited either the Bohrtec pilot tube system for the displaceable soil, or the Bohrtec 406 mm FrontSteer system for the non-displaceable ground.

Although Bortec Laser Bore possessed both a Bohrtec BM 400 LSC and a Bohrtec 400 LS, it was decided the LSC machine would be better suited to the launch shafts due to its more compact design.

Challenges While the project proponents had top-quality Bohrtec machinery at their disposal, the works were not without their challenges and a range of equipment was required. The required bore lengths ranged from 69 to 111 m and encompassed a total of approximately 830 m of boring across the project, while the launch shafts ranged from 6 to 13 m in depth.

Due to changing ground conditions, the pilot tube method was used in the softer displaceable soil, and the FrontSteer method was used in the harder non-displaceable clay and soft sandstone areas. This method has both vertical and horizontal steering capabilities with an accuracy of up to ± 25 mm for drive of a length up to 100 m.

The connection point for the sewer was into an existing sewer access chamber 13 m deep in the middle of a roadway. Bortec and Downer discussed the possibility of directly boring into the existing manhole and eliminating the excavation of the roadway to a connection, and Downer agreed to set up a platform in the existing access chamber in the roadway and internally core out a 600 mm core hole where the bore was to come out.

Bortec was able to use the pilot system to move through the soft sand and, with the use of the optical guidance system, could come out directly in the centre of this core hole. Afterwards, the hole could be upsized and bored in the 406 mm steel pipes.

with flat grades ranging from 0.45 per cent to 0.65 per cent with minimal tolerances between the bores. A DN 406 mild steel casing was installed, with the DN 225 uPVC carrier pipe then inserted inside.

Centralisers were also installed at 3 m minimum intervals, while the annulus between the uPVC and steel casing pipe was grouted. Vacuum testing and CCTV of the installed sewer were conducted and all spoil and slurry from the launch pit was removed.

The project was completed successfully and within budget, with no recorded safety incidents, while the connection made to the existing access chamber was made without the need to excavate the surrounding roadway.

Thanks to the technical assistance from Bohrtec, the optical guided system was successfully employed when using either the pilot tube or FrontSteer systems in order to maintain grade and alignment as per design.

Getting the edge over the competition With an increasing focus on being environmentally conscious, contractors that can provide a solution that is more earth friendly, while also remaining efficient and cost effective, are keeping themselves a step ahead of the competition.

dge Underground contracts for the installation of water and sewer pipelines. Managing Director and inventor of the Vermeer AXIS guided boring system Stuart Harrison is very familiar with the benefits of trenchless installation methods over traditional open cut approaches.

Pipeline installation has the potential to be destructive to the surrounding natural and built environment, but trenchless techniques, such as microtunnelling, can help mitigate this. Here are some of the environmental benefits of this method.

Minimal surface disruption One of the major differences between traditional open cut methods and trenchless methods such as microtunnelling is the amount of excavation that

needs to take place.

“Traditional open cut methods require a large amount of excavation as trenches need to be dug along the entire length of the pipeline route. This results in a large amount of environmental disruption to flora and fauna, and can be disruptive to the community,” says Mr Harrison.

“Trenchless methods don’t have this problem as they require minimal excavation. For microtunnelling, only a small entry and exit pit needs to be excavated at each end of the pipeline, and the ground between these points is left undisturbed.

“This drastically reduced site footprint means there is less impact to the surrounding environment, flora and fauna.”

Spoil management Spoil management and disposal is critical for any pipeline construction project to meet environmental regulations. Due to the amount of excavation required for open cut installations, mounds of spoil either need to sit at the site or transported out during works and trucked back in for backfilling, and in cases where there is ground contamination, it needs to be disposed of correctly.

Conversely, microtunnelling requires much smaller quantities of incoming and outgoing materials.

“Some microtunnelling machines, such as the AXIS laser guided boring system, use vacuum excavation, which offers improved environmental outcomes,” says Mr Harrison.

“The vacuum excavation method uses a vacuum tank and power unit to help maintain a clean site. During drilling, upon reaching the launch pit, the spoil transitions from the drill casing to a hose that runs up the launch pit to the tank.

“Among other benefits, this eliminates the need to manually handle spoil within the launch pit, which not only reduces manual labour but also provides a cleaner and safer pit environment for personnel to work in.

“There is also a cost-saving benefit of using the vacuum excavation method, as it is able to remove the spoil as it is produced, removing the need to suspend drilling operations so it can be done manually. This reduces project costs and helps ensure the pipeline is completed on time.”

Work safety As microtunnelling requires fewer trenches and uses vacuum excavation methods, it also has the benefit of helping to create a safer working environment. Working within or near excavation projects is considered dangerous due to the risk of potential cave-ins. This is the event of objects falling into the excavated area. These risks increase the deeper the excavation is.

As microtunnelling only requires excavating an entry and exit pit, the risks are much lower when contained to a smaller area.

For microtunnelling, only a small entry and exit pit needs to be excavated at each end of the pipeline.

“The AXIS is the only microtunnelling machine on the market that has been proven to have low carbon emissions,” says Mr Harrison.

“During a project in the US which used the AXIS system, Dr Sam Ariaratnam and his team from Arizona State University undertook an emissions study using the ‘E Calc’ emissions calculator. The study compared the results to alternative methods, and the AXIS system conclusively had the least emissions of all of them.

“With countries working towards reducing their overall emissions, the AXIS is able to help project managers and contractors lower their project’s carbon footprint.”

Recently PMA was contracted by a valued client to conduct two hydro excavation projects on Southbank on the picturesque Brisbane River.

Pipe Management Australia (PMA) has been an Australian leader in nondestructive digging (NDD), also known as hydro excavation, for more than a decade.

Operating up and down the east coast of Australia, the company’s staff were some of the first field technicians to perform these services anywhere in the country.

As PMA has grown its operation, it has not only refined the hydro-excavation skills of its team, but also grown its fleet, including powerful Cappellotto Combo Vac Units courtesy of KOR Equipment Solutions – two of which were recently deployed in Southbank.

A tricky operation Southbank is Brisbane’s premier lifestyle and cultural destination, featuring colourful gardens, lush green lawns, a rainforest, manmade beach, and walking and cycling

paths like the Clem Jones Promenade.

Delivering hydro excavation in such a public and treasured space presented the PMA team with some challenges.

Services needed to be uncovered in a garden bed located near the beach area, with space for a vehicle reasonably tight. PMA employed one of its smaller Cappellotto CAP Combi CL 1500 4x2 multipurpose Combo Jet Vac units fitted with a 6-inch (152 mm) boom to gain closer proximity to the garden area.

Meanwhile, the second PMA crew had to excavate a trench for an electrical conduit to be laid. A Combo Unit was unable to get close to the work zone as it was located on the far side of a large expanse of lawn, next to a play area.

Due to the location, more than 45 m of vacuum hose was required, powered by the Cappellotto CAP Combi 3200 CL Hydro 8’ 8x4 Unit, suited for vacuum loading over

longer distances. These KOR Combo Units, coupled with the advanced experience of PMA’s operators, made for an exceptional result for PMA’s Client.

raditional sewer maintenance structure (SMS), or manhole, rehabilitation can be costly and time consuming. But one company has devised a method for cured-in-place manhole (CIPM) liners that minimises downtime and reduces environmental impact, removing the need for excavation.

Alternative Lining Technologies uses trenchless methodologies to install CIPM liners that form impervious barriers between corrosive gases and the host structure, no matter the substrate type. Unlike coatings, the CIPM liners form a reinforced structure within the host.

This method is faster and less error prone than spray-on coating methods. In just a few hours, a structure can be prepped, lined, and reinstated. Each SMS liner has to be custom fabricated – therefore, it can be installed in any size, type or shape of underground structure. First, the internal dimensions of the SMS are measured, and the liner pattern is generated.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coated felt panels and fibreglass coated panels are shaped and cut to match the specific dimensions of the manhole and the PVC panels are heat-welded together.

Thermally fused PVC works to protect against sewer-gas corrosion and groundwater infiltration. CIPM liners are saturated in epoxy resin, reinforced with the fibreglass, pressure installed, and cured in place to form a corrosion resistant lining that bonds to the host structure.

The specialised design employs an inward-facing layer of PVC, which forms an impervious barrier against sewer-gas corrosion and groundwater infiltration. Fabricated to consistent standards, CIPM liners do not significantly reduce the opening into the host structure, typically no more than 0.5-inch (12 mm) access diameter is lost.

CIPM Liners are often the preferred technology of municipalities, utilities and other industries for rehabilitating SMS, vaults, wet wells, pump stations and other underground structures.

he last five years have witnessed significant uptake in the use of multichannel ground-penetrating radar (MCGPR) array systems, particularly in the utility space. A key driver for the increasing acceptance of such advanced systems is the desire to obtain more data with better quality and more rapidly than through the more traditional singlechannel GPR approach.

Advancements in both MCGPR array hardware and the supporting software (acquisition, processing, and interpretation) have been just as influential by making the technology more accessible and much easier to use. A good example is the Raptor 3D Array solution with Condor 3D GPR processing software from ImpulseRadar of Sweden.

ImpulseRadar has focused effort into simplifying and streamlining this process, with a positive outcome in the form of Condor 3D GPR processing software.

ImpulseRadar continually seeks effective methods for managing the huge datasets associated with MCGPR array data. The company aims to ensure the best import quality, without loss of resolution/detail, and preserve depth, positional awareness, and accuracy.

Fulfilling this goal aids in the interpretation process to enable more precise picking of targets, enhancing the export to CAD/GIS environments.

OspreyView Condor includes several useful visualisation and interpretation tools; however, ImpulseRadar offers a different view through a recent feature addition we refer to as thick-slice processing – a novel method for visualising 3D-GPR data more effectively. To the best of our knowledge, this method has not been commercially available until now.

The original concept was presented to us

by Mark Grasmueck (et al.), of the University of Miami. While Mark remains the innovator, ImpulseRadar has adapted it as a feature within Condor, which we call OspreyView. Like its namesake, OspreyView peers through Raptor data layers to offer a top view image of all features within a thick wedge of data.

OspreyView enhances the interpretation process, as the elements are automatically colour-coded by amplitude and depth so that the operator can more easily visualise them in a single top-view. The combination of Raptor’s high-quality data with Condor’s efficiency and ease-of-use, and the enhanced visualisation offered by OspreyView, makes this a winning combination.

For the uninitiated, the processing of MCGPR data is different to 2D GPR. For the latter, you look at a B-scan radargram image to pick anomalies, usually in the form of hyperbola reflections, to mark physical position and depth.

However, for MCGPR data, the dense collection of radar profiles and their associated B-scans are processed into a single top-view (C-scan), or birds-eye view, of the whole survey area.

Rather than looking to pick hyperbolas, you

look for the linear presentation of features as they are positioned within the survey area and scroll down through thin time/depth slices to see where features are at depth.

So, a depth slice is effectively a horizontal cut through the dataset, showing the data’s amplitudes after the processing is applied. The resulting image (C-scan) has some significant characteristics.

It gives an excellent overview that is somewhat cumbersome to achieve through single line profiling while preserving the full resolution of the GPR-system and data collection. The depth localisation of targets is precise and moving through the data can be swift.

As good as this type of thin-slice visualisation is, the obvious drawback is that you only see what the GPR detects at the time/depth cut through by a given slice.

There is no effective visualisation of dipping targets (on-grade utilities), nor can it be possible to see those at entirely different depths.

Scrolling is needed, which can add time, but more importantly, it does not give the operator a complete overview. Now, compare this traditional thin-slice against Condor’s new OspreyView (thick-slice).

Although both data images are good, at least five utilities are shown clearly in the OspreyView image, which is not clearly present in the thin-slice. The image speaks for itself, and if you are familiar with MCGPR data you can see the immediate advantage.

OspreyView peers through Raptor data layers to offer a top view image of all features within a thick wedge of data.

What is more impressive is that you can make interpretations directly in OspreyView.

Australia’s first online drain cleaning refresher Asset Training has developed a new training curriculum to support operators wanting to upskill under COVID-19 restraints.

The training comprises both theoretical and practical components.

Drain cleaning operators are required to undergo verification of competency or refresher training at appropriate intervals not exceeding two years. The Online Drain Cleaning Refresher course uses the MSMWJ302 system to assess the competency knowledge of the drain cleaning operator.

The operator is then practically assessed through document and video submissions, and if successful, is recertified as competent to perform their responsibilities. Refresher training is required by industry, and the training offered by Asset Training is nationally recognised, up to date, and of the highest quality.

The training comprises both theoretical and practical components and the theory includes five online quizzes with a pass/

fail grading. Each quiz is supported by a video lesson that students can view before submission, and students are given two attempts for each question.

There are two types of practical assessments: there are a series of site safety documents that must be submitted (some of these may be work documents that can be completed on the job), and videos must be taken demonstrating students carrying out practical tasks. These will need to be uploaded and reviewed by an Asset Training assessor.

A refresher has a two-year limit, and an allowance of two months is given for students to complete all assigned tasks.

Operators must submit all assigned tasks at least two weeks prior to their two-year refresher date to ensure a new Statement of Attainment can be issued in time.

Asset Training has dedicated time and resources to developing successful bridging courses and the organisation can provide experienced operators with the opportunity to upgrade their training to the next level.

access to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and participating in nationwide events such as R U OK? Day and National Safe Work Month, the organisation’s South Australian team recently engaged MATES in Construction (MATES).

Committed to taking a people-focused, industry-tailored response to the mentalhealth crisis, MATES has developed a suicide prevention program in partnership with industry, specifically designed to meet the needs of construction workers.

MATES CEO Chris Lockwood explains why this tailored approach is necessary.

“We decided to start from a position of the strengths that construction workers bring to the table. While men are commonly poor at seeking help, we also understood that men, and construction workers in particular, are terrific fixers and problem solvers,” he says.

“We turned the usual approach to suicide prevention on its head, with the goal of building an industry of people

skilled at offering help. Promoting healthoffering behaviours is the real core of the MATES program.

“We train people to be awake to the signs of poor mental health and suicide red flags among their peers. We build on this by providing regular construction workers with the conversational and relational skills to intervene and keep their mates safe when they sense things aren’t right. What we’re doing here is helping to build a more resilient and connected workforce.”

Interflow Project Engineer Alec Dawson attended the session alongside several other office and field crew members. He says it was a confronting but eye-opening experience.

“It was highly valuable to get all of the South Australia crew together to have a real discussion beyond ‘work talk’, but about our lives and how we are coping,” he says.

“It gives us the ability to understand the prevalence of mental health issues, identify when someone needs support, and more broadly, apply the valuable insight from MATES to our everyday activities.”

Turning talk into action Now armed with enhanced knowledge on the matter, Interflow’s crews are

tackling the stigma associated with discussing mental health issues head on.

The company believes organisational leaders will be key to leading this change and, by lending their support, time, and resources to promoting conversations and shifting organisational culture, the factors contributing to suicide rates in the construction industry can be shifted.

Chris Lockwood from MATES explores the importance of seeking solutions at a team, organisational, and societal level.

“Shifting societal and cultural norms isn’t a burden that should fall on any one person’s shoulders,” he says.

“We view suicide prevention as everybody’s business. The impacts of industry-based intervention programs such as MATES don’t stop with work.

People with stronger awareness and suicide intervention skills carry these with them into their families, friendships and across the community.”

Mr Dawson, alongside Interflow’s leadership team, recognises that there is still much work to be done, but there is optimism that steps are being taken in the right direction.

Drainchem is now distributing the latest breakthrough technology for the sewer industry: the Warthog WGR Switcher.

A product of innovation, it enables the

operator to switch between two distinct tool functions without the need for adjustment.

With two sets of jetting angles in one tool, the Warthog Switcher eliminates the need for changing nozzles. One set of jet angles provides efficient pulling power, while the other setting is angled for highly effective cleaning. The operator can seamlessly switch between pulling or cleaning while still in the line.

The Warthog Switcher economises on time and resources by eliminating the extra runs needed to swap between nozzles.

This means an operator can run more jobs with only one tank of water. Switching to pulling jets maximises thrust power, while cleaning jets are suitable for clearing debris and cutting roots.

Using the Switcher is nearly 50 per cent faster and 35 per cent more water economical than using a traditional rotational or fixed nozzle combination.

The line travelled through a railway tunnel, necessitating traffic closure and substantial preparation work. Initial work progressed at a maximum of 9 m per day with minimal removal of the deposits from the pipe wall.

The client approached an official Warthog distributor and was recommended a Warthog Switcher nozzle.

Because the Switcher contains two independent sets of jet angles, the full power of the water from the pump could be directed against the layers of deposit.

Hard-hitting angled jets broke through the material and directed water between the deposits and the pipe wall, pulling it down in sheets.

In the cleaning mode, no water is wasted for pulling that is not needed.
