am so excited to finally join you for No-Dig Down Under 2022. After nearly a three-year hiatus, No-Dig is back!

Following the success of the September 2019 event held in Melbourne and due to overwhelming support from sponsors, exhibitors and delegates, No-Dig is coming to Sydney, hosted at the International Convention Centre (ICC).

As the southern hemisphere’s only largescale conference and exhibition dedicated to trenchless technology, and the second largest of its kind in the world, the event features a world-class conference program, with three conference streams all focused on different aspects of the industry.

There are also training courses on trenchless methods presented by industry leaders; and an exhibition extending over 4500 sqm and featuring exhibitors from all sectors, which is all organised in partnership with the Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT).

This edition includes a focus on vaccum and hydro excavation, relining and software. There is also a dedicated section to the show guide where you can learn more about who will be speaking, an overview of the conference program, and where to find all the exhibitors.

s lockdowns have lifted and society goes back to normal, the trenchless industry sees face-to-face networking and conferences recommence, highlighting the importance of connecting in person.

One event that is finally going ahead in the No-Dig Down Under Conference & Exhibition. It has taken us slightly longer to get here this year, with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic disrupting our plans for the 2021 event and it being post-ponded from March . However, I am pleased to see so many of you in person after three years apart.

I can’t wait to catch up with everyone.

Looking at the quality of the exhibition, the training courses and the technical content we have planned for this year, I can say with certainty – it was worth the wait.

The courses will run on Tuesday, June 14, from 8am to 5pm, at the International Convention Centre in Sydney.

North East Water makes breakthrough at Beechworth sewer project North East Water has confirmed that the Beechworth sewer upgrade in underway.

A 1 km horizontal long-bore is being drilled from the company’s wastewater treatment plant in Woolshed to Beechworth under the Historic Park.

The next step is to enlarge the pilot bore before a 1km long pipe is welded together and pulled back through the hole.

The project is necessary to address sewer overflows from an outlet structure on Church Street to the Historic Park.

The existing pipe system that transfers sewage to the treatment plant is not able to cope with the infiltration of storm water during heavy rain events. By installing a larger transfer pipe, it will allow more inflow and protect against sewer spills.

A new pump station is also being constructed at the bottom of Church Street.

A 1 km horizontal longbore being drilled.

Unitywater appoints a new CEO Unitywater announced that it has appointed Anna Jackson as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Jackson comes to Unitywater from her most recent role as the General Manager Customer and Commercial at state government-owned SA Water.

She has previously held other executive roles of various responsibilities including business strategy, water security Unitywater CEO Anna Jackson. and quality, innovation, customer engagement, and environmental and social governance.

Unitywater Chairman Michael Arnett said Jackson’s skills, experience and personal values were an ideal fit for the company.

“Anna has a well-earned reputation for developing businesses that deliver excellent customer service and environmental performance while making a real difference in the communities where they operate,” Arnett said.

Arnett said that Jackson will become in charge of an organisation that is in great shape, reflecting the performance of her predecessor, previous permanent CEO George Theo as well as the current acting CEO Pauline Thomson.

DrainTech Solutions innovative approach with latest high pressure cutting technology DrainTech Solutions undertook a series of projects in Sydney on behalf of its client to restore flow to pipes located under a busy pedestrian access tunnel.

The job was to excavate various DN 225 to 600 pipes which had been flooded with grout with an MPa rating of 80.

The composition was deemed unusual and incredibly dense and would require a unique and strong piece of equipment to tackle the grout efficiently and effectively.

With maintenance and ongoing training support from Pipe Core, DrainTech Solutions tested the Power Cutter PC200, a state-of-the-art milling robot from Innovative Sewer Technologies (I.S.T.). Its multiple functions including milling, high pressure water jet cutting, inspections, repairs, renovations and more.

Most impressively it has an arm that can conduct endless rotations without stopping while the body of the unit remains incredibly stable which is vital when navigating deep inside a pipe.

The knowledge they gained from the testing pivoted them away from the chisel milling tool, to the ultra-high pressure water jet attachment that was able to shatter and blast apart grout with a pressure of up to 2500 bar, making much lighter and faster work of the job.

This unique attachment connected to the PC200 saved time, potential damage to cutting heads and air motors, prevented excessive wear and tear caused by grinding, and eliminated the need to dig.

More employment pathways for trainees at Barwon Water Barwon Water has welcomed 14 new trainees into its 2022 traineeship program.

Nine of the trainees will work directly with Barwon Water in a range of areas, including water treatment, technology operations, water quality, administration and customer service.

The other five trainees will work at the Barwon Asset Solutions, a maintenance subsidiary of the company, where they will gain experience in civil maintenance, land management and administration.

The 12-month program was established in 2016 in partnership with the Wan-Yaari Aboriginal Consultancy Service. It is a rolling initiative that provides education and hands-on training, in an effort to create more employment opportunities in the area.

At the end of the program, the trainees receive a nationally recognised qualification. Barwon Water’s Aboriginal Employment and Retention Strategy has gained state-wide recognition for this program, which is a key part of the company’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan.

Barwon Water has welcomed 14 new trainees into its 2022 traineeship program.

Sydney Water partners with Veolia to ensure sustainable water supply Sydney Water will be partnering with Veolia to meet the city’s growing demand for water and ensure there is a stable supply in future.

The two industry leaders will strategically alter existing water operations so that they become carbon neutral and energy-self-sufficient, and secure future supplies. Sydney Water said that the shift in focus is an important step in finding ways to provide a more sustainable water service to the city.

The partnership between Sydney Water and Veolia will facilitate New South Wales Government’s effort to halve carbon emissions within the state by 2030. The Federal government is also aiming to be carbon neutral by 2050.

Together, the two companies will trial emerging technologies such as those that allow for recycled water usage, and explore energy-saving systems, including water batteries for district cooling.

Sydney Water and Veolia will facilitate New South Wales Government’s effort to halve carbon emissions.

Water upgrades and renewal projects a priority for SA In the past year, there have been significant upgrades throughout South Australia to improve water security and accelerate the economy.

I

n February 2022, SA Water began a major upgrade of the Morgan to Whyalla pipeline. This renewal is part of SA Water’s four-year, $1.6 billion program to sustain and enhance its water network.

SA Water has also finalised the location of a new desalinisation plant at Billy Lights Point and commenced major water main upgrades across several regional hubs.

Elsewhere, works on the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project is a 10.5 km north-south corridor have commenced and is expected to be completed by 2030.

New water mains for regional SA Water main upgrades are taking place across regional South Australia as part of the state’s four-year, $155 million investment in its management program.

Works are scheduled to take place in major regional hubs including Gawler, Loxton, Port Lincoln and Port Pirie.

All will receive a share of around 47,000 m in new water main, set to be installed over the next 12 months.

SA Water General Manager of Sustainable Infrastructure Amanda Lewry said the program builds on the 31,000 m of water main

upgraded across regional areas during 2020-21.

“Improving our services isn’t just about delivering good quality drinking water, it’s about maintaining the system that delivers it, to reduce the frequency of water main leaks and breaks and their potential impact on our customers,” she said.

The water main upgrades will ensure local residents and businesses can continue to access water services, sustaining wellbeing and economic growth.

Enabling works underway on T2D Project

REGION REVIEW

Works have commenced on the final piece of the most significant infrastructure project in South Australia.

The Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project is a 10.5 km north-south corridor that will complete the 78 km non-stop connection between Gawler and Old Noarlunga.

Jointly funded by the Australian and SA Governments, the project is estimated to reach $9.9 billion.

A hybrid option will be used to deliver the project, using a combination of tunnels, lowered and ground-level motorways, as well as overpasses and underpasses at key intersections.

Stage One is construction of the Southern Tunnel between Anzac Highway and Darlington, and Stage Two will be the Airport Link and Northern Tunnel between the River Torrens and Anzac Highway.

When complete, around 60 per cent of the T2D Project will be comprised of underground tunnels.

SA Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard said the T2D

project will support more than 4,500 jobs.

SA Water’s new desalination plant SA Water has selected Billy Lights Point as the new preferred location for a planned desalination plant.

The plant will provide a reliable, climateindependent drinking water source to supplement existing groundwater supplies.

It will prove critical to maintaining a longterm supply of safe, clean drinking water for 35,000 SA Water customers on the Eyre Peninsula.

The plant will draw a total of up to 11.3 GL of water from the ocean each year. It will initially be designed to a four GL per year capacity, with marine and underground pipework designed to provide for an additional four GL per year.

Subject to required approvals, first water is expected to be delivered by the end of 2023.

SA Water to begin 34 km renewal project SA Water is setting up for the major renewal

of 34km of pipeline from Morgan to Whyalla, in South Australia.

Renewal of the Morgan to Whyalla Pipeline includes sections in Burra, Lindley and Winninowie, and is part of the utility’s $62 million investment in regional water infrastructure.

The pipeline has serviced the community with drinking water from the Morgan Water Treatment Plant in Riverland for early 80 years.

SA Water’s General Manager of Sustainable Infrastructure Amanda Lewry said new sections of pipeline will be constructed in parallel to the existing infrastructure, to minimise interruption to customers’ water supply.

“Our Morgan to Whyalla Pipeline provides safe, clean water to customers throughout regional South Australia and many large businesses depend on a reliable supply to enable their processes, and by duplicating sections of the pipeline, we’re able to keep the water flowing during this important project,” Lewry said.

South Australia has had an eventful past 12 months in the trenchless industry.

he slurry processing solution is to use liquid and solids separation equipment to treat soil, soup or slurry generated from hydrovac, excavation or horizontal directional drilling (HDD) projects, and produces reusable material for construction and discharge clean water.

Normally, the slurry is contaminant-free and comes from physical utility location in public right of ways, and directional drilling for placement of underground pipes, utilities, or other private property construction. The slurry is of different particle sizes, and is processed by a classifying vibrating screen, dewatering fine shaker, and a dewatering decanter centrifuge.

For various applications on solid liquid separation, the concept is the same. Separate the mixed fluid to different class, with the easiest practical way is by particle size. The most commonly used method for separating particles based on particle size is screening.

Screen / screening equipment selection Screen selection is based on the overall screen area required to achieve efficient screening at a given mass throughput capacity. Length of screen is important for ensuring the number of trials needed to achieve the desired mass throughput capacity and to provide sufficient screen underflow capacity.

Width is important for ensuring proper bed depth so as to provide sufficient stratification.

The length of the screen should be at least two times the width for good practical design.

Accurate coding and scoring The WSA 2020 4.1 reporting codes have a revised scoring and grading system that is designed to better reflect the severity and impact of defects. Asset owners are adopting

Fighting against the elements: preplanning for success in Townsville Heading into the wet season in northern Queensland, Edge Underground was working against extreme heat and flash flooding on a microtunnelling project to complete three lines – with one under a major state highway.

F

ighting against the elements and upcoming holidays, planning played a major role in ensuring the success of the project, so that when the worst scenario occurred, Edge Underground could perform its best and get the job done on time.

Edge Underground was subcontracted to complete three microtunnels in Townsville, partnering with Mendi Constructions, a well-known local business. The job required a 450DN, 500DN and 600DN concrete enveloper pipe to be installed – the small two pipes under one road, and the biggest and longest pipe under the Bruce Highway.

Difficult weather conditions Stuart Harrison, Managing Director at Edge Underground, said going into the project, the team knew that there could be challenges due to the extreme heat, and timing meant that

Queensland was heading into the wet season, presenting the risk of flash flooding.

The team was also aware that there was a learning curve for Mendi Constructions, as their crew had little experience with microtunnelling and needed a partner that could help them process what was important to ensure the best outcome for the project.

As the team was getting started on the project to install the 450DN pipe, the worstcase scenario happened, with three days of flash flooding stopping work before they were able to get momentum on the project.

“The flash flooding really set the foundation for understanding the need to get the shaft prepared for all weather, and All pipes were installed within millimetres of the required grade.

assume and plan for the worst as that will definitely allow you to perform at your best,” Harrison says.

“With the first shaft we had to make some compromises, and in this industry, whenever a compromise is made, it eventually catches up to you during the project. If it doesn’t catch up with you, you’re very lucky.

“We don’t like to rely on luck to perform well, so we pre-plan and manage the risk in order to ultimately be able to provide a highend final product.”

Harrison says the flooding made the job more complicated, and increased the scope of work and timeframe to complete it.

However, with the lessons learned from line one, the team was able to compete the pilot and ream line two without problems.

“The bore process was a total of two days of work, which was amazing considering the volume of material,” he says. “And like all the jobs we complete, the pipe was installed within millimetres of the required grade.”

Tackling challenges As well as difficult weather conditions, the team was presented with delays from the Christmas break and changing ground conditions mid-bore.

Harrison says the timing to start bore three was in the lead up to the Christmas break, so there was going to be a number of days where work wouldn’t be taking place.

“There was a concern that maybe we shouldn’t start before Christmas, but we felt we had the ability to get it done and that if we started on Wednesday, we could finish it by Thursday night. This would be a great outcome for a 600DN concrete enveloper pipe with a 800mm bore,” he says.

“It did get a bit complicated when we launched on Wednesday as we found there was a change in ground conditions mid-bore.

It went from hard consolidated to more alluvial, and the alluvial layer was allowing high water flow across the compacted clay – which wasn’t noted in the geotech.

“However, with the AXIS laser guided boring system we can adapt the setup to best suit conditions, so we were able to readjust our setup and complete the pilot line on Wednesday, allowing us to start reaming Thursday morning.

“While there were some delays out of our control during the ream, we completed the drill on Thursday night, and the project was finished well within the timeframes leading into Christmas.”

The biggest and longest pipe was installed under the Bruce Highway.

Bakton, the new TBM machine for Rob Carr, Western Australia In February 2022, Rob Carr Pty commenced construction on the Quinns Main Sewer Project for Water Corporation, a key Rob Carr client.

T

he project includes one of the longest drives carried out in WA. This project involves the construction of a 1.9 km wastewater pipeline with a diameter of 2.2 metres (m) through a combination of micro tunnelling and open trench construction. The northern corridor of the metropolitan area will benefit from the addition of this pipeline to the wastewater distribution system.

The project has kicked off with the clearing of affected areas and the construction of access tracks. Rob Carr has considered protecting the habitat of endangered species and protecting fauna. To meet the prerequisites as per the Conservation Act 1950, a regular fauna handler/relocator was appointed.

Over 10,000 bees were rescued from an area to be cleared at one of the locations close to a launch shaft.

In March 2022, the company’s new AVN1800 tunnel bore machine arrived in Western Australia. A naming competition was held for the TBM, where several members of the community participated, and BAKTON was placed first with 63 per cent of the votes.

The name was suggested by local resident Peter Sexton, to honour his father, Maurice Sexton, and grandfather, Bruce Baker. Both have been regarded as pioneers of artisian drilling in Western Australia, and the name serves as a tribute to their work.

Bakton has been operational since May 2022. The AVN is on its route to its first receival shaft, which is at a depth of 13 metres.

The first launch shaft was completed by mid-April 2022 and is located in the existing carpark of the North Metropolitan TAFE, Clarkson. To accommodate the TAFE’s students and personnel over the duration of the project, a new parking lot was built adjacent.

The last shaft is located at Hall Road, on the other side of the Mitchell Freeway. This shaft is currently 50 per cent complete and will be 27 m deep when fully constructed.

This is the deepest of the five shafts to be constructed.

combination of in situ concrete caisson, precast segments installed by underpinning and shotcrete depending on the geotechnical conditions encountered. The geotechnical conditions are expected to be a combination of sand and pinnacle limestone varying from hard to soft.

The open trench section of sewer has reached 75 per cent of completion and is projected to be completed by mid-June.

The job includes four drives ranging from 188 m to 637 m. The longest drive is curved

with a radius of 600 m and will pass under the Mitchell Freeway and the Joondalup Railway Line. The AVN1800 was selected for the project due to its ability to work in mixed ground conditions of both sand and hard limestone.

The whole project is due to for completion in early 2023.

Adept leads the way with water and sewer upgrade at Thomas Embling Hospital Adept Civil Group is well underway with water and sewer main construction works at Thomas Embling Hospital. Using trenchless technology, the Melbourne-based company will upgrade the hospital’s entire sewer system.

Adept will use its microtunnelling machine to install 250 metres of sewer.

homas Embling Hospital is a highsecurity forensic mental health hospital located in Fairfield, Victoria.

It is currently undergoing a $349.6 million expansion, and these upgrades are being conducted on behalf of Forensicare, Victoria’s leading provider of mental healthcare.

Shortly after the Andrews government announced the expansion plans for the hospital in 2021, Adept was awarded the sewer upgrade project. The company was chosen based on its experience carrying out similar projects, specifically those that require a high degree of consideration for community safety.

Adept will use its microtunnelling machine to install 250 metres of sewer. This

installation process will involve constructing four maintenance chambers that are 10 metres in depth. The company will also install 1.6 kilometres of dual DN180 watermain in order to upgrade the water supply to service the entire site.

Like many of Adept’s other projects, the company described the upgrade works as “high risk” and “extremely challenging”.

In fact, a significant amount of technical consideration has gone into the project’s planning. According to the company’s business development manager, Quentin Powell, the equipment and machinery that are being used were chosen on the basis of minimising risk.

“Microtunnelling is difficult at the best of times especially when drilling in hard rock in excess of 200 MPA,” Powell says. “The vermeer axis machine was suitable for this project as it provides a fully enclosed bore whilst boring, as the drilling rods are the similar diameter as the tri-cone boring head limiting the chance of collapsing.

“Adept have been working closely with NSC Project Solutions, Aecom and Forensicare to deliver the project safely and efficiently.”

Wilmot Pipelining sees success in projects across NSW As of the end of 2021, Wilmot Pipelining successfully delivered the largest UV CIP liners ever installed in Australia. Wilmot has had a similarly busy year in 2022, with several projects underway and others completed, heralding in yet another year of impressive progress for the company.

he Hunter Water Sewer Relining project located in Newcastle, NSW, has made promising headway as of mid-May 2022.

Wilmot Pipelining has completed several sewer relining projects for the water industry company.

Its lining team utilised the Brandenburger BBS.8 Liner to install new UV maintenance hole liners on several sites. The Brandenburger BBS.8 was the first UV maintenance hole liner on the market which adapts top to the prevailing manhole geometry, making it the most time effective method of manhole rehabilitation.

More success has similarly been seen in Muswellbrook, NSW, approximately 127km north-west of Newcastle. The Water Main Renewal Program, issued by the Muswellbrook Shire Council, included the rehabilitation of the Forbes Street, Lorne Street and Turanville Avenue reticulation mains. As of mid-May 2022, Wilmot has successfully rehabilitated 26 failing assets ranging from DN300 – DN900 pipes varying in length and distance from each access chamber. The project was completed in accordance with the established budget and within set time constraints, additionally managing to be completed with minimal disturbances to the residential community.

Likewise, in South West NSW stormwater rehabilitation and relining works are securely underway. Structural UV relining of up to 46 stormwater culverts is set to begin pit-to-pit across a total of seven suburbs in high density residential areas.

Wilmot is aiming to have similar success in completing the project within minimal disturbances to residents as seen in Muswellbrook. One of the Wilmot lining crews have already completed a package of stormwater rehabilitations, pit builds and modifications.

In 2004 founder of Wilmot Civil, Andrew Wilmot, began a role in the wastewater treatment sector. Keeping our waterways clean and pollutant free became a real passion for Andrew. There, as his understanding of the importance of keeping Australia’s waterways pollution free dawned on him, Wilmot began to think of what more he could do for the industry.

It was while contracting pipe bursting to upgrade sewer mains across Australia in 2006, that Wilmot’s ambition to establish his own company specialising in trenchless technologies took root.

In 2012, after continuing his work in civil construction and commercial plumbing and drainage, he established Wilmot Civil in 2012.

The company officially kicked off in Newcastle, NSW, initially offering house service lining and small-scale civil pipeline construction as well as point line repairs. Wilmot Civil began working

on significantly larger scale projects for local councils and utilities in 2015 and began trading as Wilmot Pipelining shortly thereafter.

While 90 per cent of projects the company was delivering were relining and pipe rehabilitation, the business expanded its offerings to the market so there could be a trenchless solution for every asset type and situation.

In 2018, Wilmot Pipelining invested in UV cured-in-place (CIP) technology and have since established reliable rehabilitation service with this technology. As well as expanding into wastewater rehabilitation of maintenance holes, Wilmot has also expanded its trenchless offerings with investments in spiral wound and slip lining technologies.

Aussie Trenchless has been working to trial the PST in maintenance holes as part of a pilot project in manhole rehabilitation. The goal is to monitor the performance of the PST when used for similar rehabilitation projects over time before rolling their maintenance hole refurbishment program out. While PST has not been used to rehabilitate a maintenance holes before, Aussie Trenchless has been the first to adapt and innovate on the technology.

“What makes this PST unique is that you can access the maintenance hole and complete all work through its existing lid as well as seal all maintenance hole wall faults using a high flow cementitious grout,” says Meredith. “It is also possible to fill external voids in soil

matrix and seal the maintenance hole bench areas as the grout exfiltrates out through the maintenance hole walls.”

PST lining panels are made of polypropylene material, providing a smooth surface with effective hydraulic performance capacities. The panels are lightweight, easy to install and ideal for positioning in confined and tight space, the product being designed to be suitable for all pipe types. Segment pipe rehabilitation technologies are recommended for sewers with complex or non-standard shapes. Additionally, the ring stiffness of PST can be enhanced or altered by attaching circumferential bars, making the product suitable for installing in sewers of various depths. This is possible due to PST being a nimble segmental lining system featuring a grouted annulus gap, making it versatile in tight access locations.

Vermeer HDD a fab addition for Irrifab Thompson’s Irrifab sensed an opportunity to expand its business when it couldn’t source local contractors to fulfil smaller civil pipeline jobs, which saw the company adding a new Vermeer D8x12 HDD to its fleet, and train up their team to handle the projects themselves.

Doug Walker is one of the Civil Project Supervisors at TI and has been working with the business for about two years. He says the decision to expand into civil work was made because it offers a big opportunity for growth.

“There was a lot of work going in council pipeline projects, watermain replacements, and building out pump stations, so we have invested and grown that part of the business

over the last few years,” Doug says.

Part of that growth has seen TI recently add a brand-new Vermeer D8x12 HDD to its fleet of excavators and skid steers, which will be put to work on the smaller jobs that would usually be contracted out.

“It’s been hard to contract out our small, local jobs lately, as the labour and appetite just isn’t there. So, we decided to invest in the business, bring in a machine, and train ourselves up so we could do the work ourselves,” he says.

hese projects have a high level of complexity dealing with train movements, public safety, confined spaces, and tight delivery timeframes.

“S&Z find the challenge of the rail projects rewarding. We are required to install conduits for signalling and power as well as watermains for water and fire services,” says S&Z General Manager Jim Pound. “We never know what we will encounter there is always something that occurs to keep us on our toes.”

of signal upgrades on the Donnybrook to Shepparton line upgrade as the new and faster trains need the boom gates to be activated much earlier. This often involved getting into areas not accessible by any means other than by rail. S&Z has a variety of HDD equipment which allowed it to deliver its compact 4X HDD unit by rail.

“Some of the areas where we were required to bore were environmentally sensitive and protected. This meant the only way to get to the bore locations was by the rail network. Our nibble machine was able to be transported by rail to the precise locations required without any impact on the environment at all,” Pound says. Many rail projects require work to be carried out under occupation these are small windows of time when the trains are prevented from running to allow the work to be delivered safely. Given the importance of S&Z’s rail network these are kept to a minimum and require contractors such as S&Z to ensure it completes the required works within the allotted time frames. Pound says if an unexpected issue is encountered a solution needs to be found as soon as possible to allow the works to be completed within the occupation period.

building hundreds of kilometres of pipeline around Lake Sakakawea or transporting liquid natural gas around the lake in tanker trucks, much of the natural gas was safely burned as a flare to prevent release of hydrocarbons directly into the atmosphere.

Already transporting half of the natural gas produced in the Bakken region, WBI Energy, Inc. (WBI), a subsidiary of MDU Resources Group, Inc., contracted Michels 2021 to build the transmission pipeline and trenchless segments of its North Bakken Expansion Project. HDD was chosen as the most viable, yet still very challenging, method for the installation.

Michels put its team to work studying the project and developing multiple plans to achieve the highest possibility for success with the most minimal chances for injuries or environmental issues.

After about a month, reading was completed, and the hole was prepared to receive the long street of 24-inch pipe to seal the project. After two days, the pullback was successfully completed and Michels had, once again, proven the lengths can be pushed further than previously been done, contributing to the future of the trenchless industry.

number of years, Boremore Civil Group recently purchased the JT60 to handle a more diverse range of projects. The team is now able to take on jobs in small tight spaces in a variety of conditions as well as large diameter bores that can be up to 600m long. The two drills are complimented by a FM25, 400GPM recycling system and two large capacity vacuum units.

“This was the first job we used the Ditch Witch JT60 for and it handled the conditions really well,” Matt says.

“The project at Mt Selwyn presented a lot of challenges from the extreme temperatures to the tight timeframe required to have all the conduit laid for the site to be up and running for the 2022 ski season.

“As part of the project we also installed additional conduit, allowing for future upgrades or mains failure. By installing the infrastructure underground this time we can also hopefully eliminate or minimise the damages should another natural disaster occur in the future.”

eolia’s water division comprises over 830 employees across Australia and New Zealand. Chief Operating Officer for Water Daniel Spiller says ecological transformation is at the core of the company’s modus operandi.

“We believe there is a global climate emergency, and that it is the responsibility of companies such as ours to lead the way in practical solutions to that emergency. This is what we term in our mission statement as ecological transformation,” says Spiller.

“Within the water space, there is a real challenge of an ageing asset base, with many pipes constructed in the early 20th century now reaching the end of their service life.

From our perspective, there is a real element of ecological transformation in getting the most out of those assets and sustaining them for as long as we possibly can.”

Veolia offers clients a full suite of services, from analysing the client’s product, to understanding their needs, assessing the infrastructure they have, then working through the lifecycle of the potential interventions to water infrastructure.

Building off its experience in water management and infrastructure, Veolia secured a contract with Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) for its water main renewal program.

ageing infrastructure susceptible to ground movement and cracks leading to leaks.

Water main replacement is an ongoing asset management program designed to ensure continuity of supply and a high level of service.

The program is part of GVW’s five-year Price Plan outlined to the Essential Services Commission, with more than $11million spent upgrading water mains during the 2018 to 2023 period, replacing more than 25 km of ageing infrastructure.

from a selection of modern pipe materials such as plasticised polyvinyl chloride (PVC), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and ductile iron.

HDPE in particular has greater reliability, is recyclable and is generally more eco-friendly.

Veolia Project Manager (Network Services Victoria) Meedo Abbas says the company has been delivering its water renewal program to GVW since 2018 and has had a strong focus on using trenchless technology for projects.

“One of the projects has been delivered through trenchless technology using horizontal directional drilling (HDD), pipe jacking, microtunnelling and slip lining,” Abbas says.

“This was a very complex job involving a number of stakeholders and requiring permits and approvals to proceed. The job had been in the planning for a number of years.”

Abbas says the water main being replaced by Veolia, located in Wandong on Rail Street, had previously recorded 10 bursts, two within the last three years.

Veolia says one of the key challenges to address was due to the works involving crossing the railway line near the Wandong Railway Station. The rail line is the main line between Melbourne and Sydney, and VicTrack, VLine and ARTC had to endorse any designs and project management plans, adding to the complexity of the job.

ARTC was also planning to upgrade the

bridge where the trains cross causing further challenges for Veolia and GVW’s approval process. However, after intensive liaising between all stakeholders and designers, Veolia successfully secured a final proposal with the acceptance of an offset pipeline.

“The job involved using two types of trenchless technology – microtunnelling and slip lining technology to bore under the track lines,” Abbas says. “Totalling about 42 metres, we bored and installed a MSCL sleeve and slip line to the new HDPE water main inside it.”

Abbas says by using HDD, slip lining and microtunnelling technology Veolia was able to minimise impact to the environment and surrounding area, something that is particularly important to the company as it pursues ecological transformation.

“The reason Veolia is emphasising trenchless methodology for this program is to reduce environmental impact on native vegetation and waterways, and also to reduce the interruption for the customer and community,” he says.

Daniel Hughes, General Manager of Planning and Assets at GVW, says that the complexity of the work meant that finding a provider able to deliver the project with minimal disruption was particularly important.

“We needed a solution that would enable us to keep our customers in service while minimising impact to the local environment,” Hughes says. “We are pleased with the trenchless technology Veolia brought to the project, enabling us to achieve the goals we set.

The open communication approach between our teams has contributed to that success.”

In order for Veolia to safely undertake the water main work under the rail lines, it had to

use two forms of a track protection system to track the trains and monitor the movements of the tracks.

This included manual surveying of the train tracks and using a new technology called Tiltmetres Monitoring.

Tiltmetres are smart devices that can be connected to one or more gateways, communicating rail movement in real time to a central server.

For the Wandong Railway Street project, the Tiltmetres were installed on the track every two metres with the data provided to the key stakeholders in real time, increasing at critical phases of the project.

“As a result, we were able to safely and successfully complete the construction of the project, which took 30 days,” Abbas says.

He added that conventional methods weren’t practical with this job as it would have caused unacceptable disruption to train schedules.

“We were able to provide GVW with a more sustainable and a superior outcome, all whilst minimising disruption to the natural environment and the community,” he says.

David Turner has spent several decades working in the trenchless industry. Over the next five years, governments and private sector infrastructure asset owners are set to make unprecedented investment

in infrastructure projects. Free from Covid constraints and backed by economic support from Federal and state governments, it is important that the projects are designed and delivered in a manner that takes full advantage of the installation benefits that HDD can provide.

At a project’s concept level, it is important that HDD expertise is part of the early discussions, as HDD involvement at this stage will bring greater understanding of the process and its benefits, plus innovative opportunities for the installation of the infrastructure.

“Providers like Maxibor are already delivering larger diameter and long bores in excess of 2 km,” says Turner. “It is exciting that early connection with our HDD design expertise is increasingly sought out by asset owners, project consultants and design engineering consultancies to provide early input into projects to help identify and better inform early designs and project decisions.”

interest (EOI) stage where bidders need to progress design and construction methodology to a more detailed level, having the HDD design and delivery experience in the bid team can be pivotal to the success of the bid.

One recent example is the Sydney Water Refresh Vaucluse to Diamond Bay project.

Comdain worked closely with Maxibor and WSP to present Comdain’s winning bid for the design and delivery of this project, which included a 1.85 km pipeline.

by Sydney Water is creating a project delivery framework which will optimise outcomes for all stakeholders on this showpiece major project.

Maxibor now has one of the largest HDD maxi-rig fleets in Australia. This includes a Vermeer 330x500, American Auger 660, Gallagher 600 and a Gallagher 660e (The Hulk). Maxibor also has the four most powerful pumps in the HDD industry, with its two Gardner Denver PZ8s and two Gardner Denver PZ9s.

The grunt of the rigs and pumps means that Maxibor can take on any length bore. “Project decisionmakers understanding the capabilities of the available HDD equipment is so important across the full project cycle – from concept,

design and delivery – as this helps to optimise the value of a project,” says Turner.

Maxibor’s Gallagher 660e maxi-rig, informally known as The Hulk, is the only electric maxi-rig in the HDD industry in Australia. The electrified spread comes with its own substation and can drill up to 3.5 km in a single shot with a diameter up to 1.6 m.

According to Stephen Loneragan, one of Australia’s leading HDD design engineers, “Electric spreads provide new design and delivery solutions in Australia, especially for complex capital city water and sewer or power and gas projects where setup, noise, emissions, congestion services and ground conditions all present challenges that need to be overcome.”

There is a growing need for government and private sector funders of investment in infrastructure to meet Environment, Sustainability and Governance (ESG) requirements. Both ESG and climate are at the top of funders’ lists in terms of risk mitigation, and they want to be able to demonstrate that they are investing in a way that optimises longer term sustainability outcomes for all stakeholders.

In this context, trenchless technology, and more specifically HDD, can provide solutions that are compatible with critical

needs of funders, asset owners and the broader community.

Installing infrastructure “down under” is an effective solution for Australia as the country faces the impact of climate change. Having telecommunications and electrical assets underground provides many obvious safety and environmental benefits – one need only look at the ravages of the more extreme weather conditions like the 2019-20 bushfires to see that having infrastructure securely installed at depth provides a significantly safe community. It also facilitates the recovery process as services can be more quickly restored.

Maxibor’s chief executive Rodney O’Meley says the push for early cooperative involvement in projects and environmentally friendly delivery methods reflects the importance the industry is placing on the long-term picture.

“If a project is designed well, its chances of successful delivery and longer-term value are much more likely to be better achieved.

Investment in disaster resilient infrastructure needs to be seen not as an additional expense but as an opportunity to create shared value for businesses and society,” says O’Meley.

Contractor proves value of trenchless in the top end While they have always presented social and environmental benefits over traditional forms of civil construction, it wasn’t that long ago that trenchless methods were a significantly more expensive option. However, this is no longer the case, as is being illustrated on a municipal subdivision housing estate project in Darwin, where Dig Hard Excavations found Smart Lock’s point repair system to be the most cost-effective solution when compared with a dig and replace drainage option.

perating out of Darwin, Northern Territory, for more than 25 years, Dig Hard Excavations is one of the regions leading civil hydraulics and drainage rehabilitation contractors. The company specialises in the rehabilitation of civil plumbing infrastructure and uses advanced no-dig lining technologies to achieve results which are affordable, environmentally friendly and extend the life of failing infrastructure.

Dig Hard Excavations’ wealth of experience and knowledge has culminated on the first stage of a stormwater point repair project for a recently completed council residential estate which commenced in early April. Prior to rehabilitation, the company cleaned the pipelines, as well as conducting CCTV inspection and condition assessment.

Smart solution After calculating the cost of trenchless rehabilitation, the contractor concluded using Smart Lock Group’s point repair lining system would be a fraction of the price of traditional dig and replace methods, and was by far the most cost-effective option for the project.

Smart Lock is designed to withstand the harshest of climates and conditions, making it perfect for the unforgiving Australian climate, including in the Top End. The technology produces a cost-effective permanent solution for the repair of underground pipes, without the need for digging, by combining the proven technologies of fiberglass and resin with a mechanical stainless steel sleeve.

This combination produces a very strong structural repair that provides form, structural integrity and strength back to the host pipe,

Rehabilitation underway Works started are taking place during the Territory’s dry season, which extends May to the end of October. The cooler weather – the average temperature is 21-32C, with humidity at around 60-65 per cent – has aided in the installation process, with as few as four people required on site to complete the installations.

By the time the project is completed the Dig Hard Excavations on site at the residential estate, completing the rehabilitation.

contractor will have installed up to 100 repairs on sections of defective pipeline, varying in size from 375 to 600 mm.

Less disruptions One of the biggest benefits of using Smart Lock has been the removal of costs associated

with re-instating road and existing concrete infrastructure where the project is taking place. The technology can be installed in a reduced site footprint, with rehabilitation only requiring access to stormwater pits.

The use of trenchless technology is greatly minimising the impact of the project on the

surrounding faura, fauna, soil erosion and contamination. The use of Smart Lock creates minimal waste while using as few resources as possible, avoiding the excavation of trenches which can harm landscaping, trees, habitat, and wildlife.

These outcomes illustrate that combining fit for purpose trenchless technology with a specialist contractor with proper training and experience in installation, pipe relining creates minimal waste while using as few resources as possible.

Bentink tells Trenchless Australasia that the B-Tech Connections™ can be pre-fused to any length of pipe and are available in threaded or push together connections that are made of 100 per cent HDPE, allowing them to be the exact specifications and material as the pipe.

“Pre-fusion of B-Tech Connections™ prior to arrival on site reduces labour time required on site for connecting pipes and also reduces the need for specialised equipment or specialised training on site,” he says. “As the B-Tech Connections™ maintain the same external size, stacking of pipes for transport is more efficient and simpler than flanged ends.”

Impressively, the mechanical connections for HDPE pipe are designed retain over 70 per cent normal pull-able strength, while retaining 95 per cent ductility of the pipe and 100 per cent flow capacity. Additionally, the connections feature leak-free O-ring seals and are resistant to corrosion and UV resistance of HDPE. No metallic components!

The innovative design of the B-Tech Connections™ allows the rapid make up of threaded connections with two-to-three rotations, which results in quicker connections in the field. Such connections have been lab tested to hold up to 16,100 kg of pulling force. Likewise, water pressure testing of SDR9

In confined space applications, work crews save time and resources in comparison to when utilising other time-consuming connection techniques of bulky mechanical methods. In the time it takes to make up 1 bolt on a flange, B-Tech can be fully connected.

This improves safety and drastically reduces time spent establishing connections and the equipment required to do so safely in restricted spaces.

kwik-ZIP gets the show on the road In early 2022, kwik-ZIP HDXT-43 spacers were used to complete a project for Highways England near Birmingham Airport, where they provided an efficient and seamless solution for bunding together HDPE pipe.

Kwik-ZIP HDXT-43 spacers were recently used on a project for Highways England on a M42 J6 diversion in Birmingham.

T

he kwik-ZIP HDXT Series is an anticorrosion, non-metallic casing spacer range for pipe-in-pipe (PIP) applications such as slip lining and cased crossings.

Suitable for heavy-weight pipe materials including steel, ductile, mild steel cement lined (MSCL), glass reinforced epoxy (GRE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), it can be used on all diameters from 300 mm and beyond through the simple addition of multiple segments.

Kwik-ZIP HDXT-43 spacers were recently

used on a project for Highways England on a M42 J6 diversion in Birmingham. UK-based infrastructure services and engineering company Amey used the spacers to facilitate the slip-lining of a four-pipe bundle.

Junction 6 of the M42 connects the M42 motorway to the A45 to the east of Birmingham, where road users suffered significant delays and due to capacity constraints. The M42 J6 Diversion Project was designed to alleviate some of these delays experienced by motorists.

The 4-pipe bundle consisted of 2 x DN 180

HDPE and 2 x DN450 HDPE pipes with a run length of 135 m. Kwik-Zip spacers were selected for this project due to their ability to secure the 4-pipe bundle together; their suitability to work with any pipe profile; and their design that protects and supports the bundle during the slip-lining process.

Kwik-ZIP’s large range of spacers caters for a wide range of carrier and casing pipe size combinations, as well as providing flexibility to deal with project alterations. Kwik-ZIP spacers have no metal parts and are made from Kwik-ZIP’s engineered thermoplastic blend that is flexible, extremely tough and has a low coefficient of friction.

Amey site manager on the M42 J6 Diversion Project Tim Lohoff commended kwik-ZIP for the intuitive design and ease of use of the spacers, which helped the project to come to fruition.

“The spacer system was easily installed and was an excellent aid in slip lining the 4-pipe bundle through the tunnel, which we had installed prior to slip lining works – a truly excellent product,” says Lohoff.

fter nearly a three-year hiatus, NoDig is back! Following the success of the September 2019 event held in Melbourne and due to overwhelming support from sponsors, exhibitors and delegates, No-Dig Down Under is coming to Sydney, hosted at the ICC. No-Dig Down Under is the southern hemisphere’s only large-scale conference and exhibition dedicated to trenchless technology, and the second largest of its kind in the world.

About the ASTT

T

he Australasian Society of Trenchless Technology (ASTT) is a non-profit organisation comprising of members throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The successful establishment of the trenchless industry in Australasia has been supported and promoted by the peak industry organisation, the ASTT, since it was established in 1991.

The society works tirelessly to promote the use of trenchless technology in Australasia, lobbying government and client organisations to highlight the advantages of using trenchless technology and the benefits of training for industry.

Membership is open to all who are concerned with the provision of gas, water, sewerage, drainage, roads, telecommunications and electrical services.

ASTT membership provides trenchless professionals the tools and services they need to be better informed and better connected in this industry.

The ASTT is part of the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT), an affiliation of societies in more than 30 countries worldwide.
