elcome to the first edition of Trenchless Australasia for 2024. It is great to join you again to bring another year of the latest industry news, technology, and projects around Australasia.

This edition we focus on new technology in the trenchless sector and where it is heading in years to come. As an industry that is forever evolving and adapting, it is an exciting time to see what is on the horizon.

With the growing pressures of water authorities maintaining aging drinking water pipe infrastructure, manufacturers and suppliers are looking at new technologies to assist with these rising challenges.

SAERTEX multiCom, supported and distributed by Pipe Core, has developed the SAERTEX-LINER® H2O for this challenge.

The SAERTEX-LINER® H2O is an innovative fibreglass-reinforced solution for potable water supply lines that is pressureresistant and hygienic.

The GRP Liner is manufactured out of the SAERTEX multiCom headquarters in Saerbeck, Germany, which itself is certified to the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 Standards.

Similarly, SECA has taken its existing capabilities and is able to tailor each CCTV vehicle fit out to suit every customer’s individual needs. This includes vehicle size,

system configuration, load capacities and storage requirements.

As per the customer’s request, SECA customed designed a vehicle fit out with a comprehensive CCTV inspection system, which includes the iPEK Rovion Crawler RX130.

Completing the fit out’s CCTV inspection system is WinCan VX, an advanced CCTV pipe inspection software.

The software allows users to collect pipe inspection data, organise it into a database and generate inspection reports that can graphically display the pipe and any defects.

Trenchless Australasia’s Vivien Topalovic has also been promoted to Assistant Editor.

Topalovic’s experience and passion for the sector will be pivotal in helping portray the information and capture the stories of the industry to our readers.

new year is upon us, and I will take this opportunity to wish you, your families, and businesses a safe and prosperous 2024.

The ASTT closed 2023 off well and now we’ve all had a well earned break, we turn our focus to the new year and what we have instore for 2024 is exciting.

To start things off strong, the council has revised the ASTT Strategic Action Plan, and have some new initiatives to roll out in 2024.

Last year we set the task of reviewing the Strategic Action Plan and we have successfully achieved this. It is initiatives like this that are designed to deploy the membership resources to benefit the industry and the membership in one way or another.

And this should be a reminder to our members; if there is something that you feel we as the peak trenchless body should be working on, please reach out and contact either myself or your local Councillor.

No-Dig Down Under 2023 returned for a second year in a row, hosted at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, proving again to be the largest trenchless technology trade show in the Southern Hemisphere.

The conference theme was “Better Outcomes Through Trenchless” and through this theme, we stimulated the conversation and papers, and the panel discussions on improving the service industry with better design, better method selection, and better delivery to conclude improved overall trenchless solutions.

As a non-conference year this year, we are planning some networking forums and potential site visits for our members to fill the void of No-Dig Down Under not returning until 2025.

In other exciting ASTT and trenchless news, the ASTT has been successful in its bid to host the 2026 International No-Dig Conference and Exhibition in Auckland, New Zealand. This is off the back of Secretary Trevor Gosatti and Prime Creative Media’s Simon Coburn presenting a bid at the 2023 ISTT International Council Meeting at its International No-Dig Event in Mexico.

This will be a great opportunity for the industry in New Zealand to showcase its capabilities and celebrate the trenchless projects and technologies in the country.

As we enter into a new year, it is also a timely reminder that the ASTT Council is always keen to hear from all of our members and especially any new ideas or initiatives you feel the society should be investigating and/or pursuing.

This year, the ASTT will be putting a spotlight on the access to participate in current Special Interest Groups (SIGs), including Pipe Lining and Young Trenchless.

Victorian ASTT Councillor Ashley Hamer has put a call out to young people in the trenchless industry to join our newly formed Young Trenchless People Committee. Joining the committee will bring benefits such as professional development, networking opportunities, knowledge sharing, mentoring and coaching opportunities.

ASTT council planning for the future As we head into 2024, the ASTT council are hard at work and meeting to consider a number of initiatives to do the following: • Update industry documentation (guidelines, specifications, etc.) provided by the ASTT • Promotion of the ASTT Young Trenchless Professionals group to grow and be active • Promotion and growth of special industry groups • Training and education programs • Trenchless forums for members • Increased member activities • Promotion of ASTT & ISTT conferences/ exhibitions within Australasia and nearby regions • Membership advocacy on important issues to government and asset owners

• Provide industry information for the benefit of members (state of industry report, etc.)

• Other initiatives to provide membership value The council is keen to hear from members if they have any issues requiring assistance or suggestions for industry improvements.

Resources can then be allocated to these items that assist ASTT membership.

No-Dig Down Under 2025 & 2026 As touched upon in the last issue of Trenchless Australasia, the ASTT council will continue to work together with our media partners, Prime Creative Media, to bring more high quality events for 2025 in Melbourne and then the ASTT-hosted ISTT International No-Dig to be held in Auckland, New Zealand in September 2026.

If you haven’t already done so put these events in your planning calendar to be a participant as both events will provide great value for your businesses and the trenchless technology industry in our region.

ISTT membership enhancements The ISTT sought to provide a number of enhancements for members by making the following enhancements in 2023: • Trenchless event calendar – A trenchless event calendar has been introduced to the ISTT website as a dynamic resource for professionals in the trenchless industry.

Positioned on the ISTT website under the 'Event' menu, this Google calendar-based tool is dedicated to sharing trenchless events globally. It is curated with contributions from our affiliated societies and also includes significant events from other major organisations such as IFAT, ROKATECH, WEFTEC, WWETT, UTC, SWE, and ITA. This calendar is your go-to guide to stay updated on global trenchless events and opportunities.

• Multilingual function – In an effort to embrace the ISTT diverse global community, we've added Spanish and Japanese translations to our website as of October 2023. This website enhancement, powered by the innovative AI technology of ChatGPT, ensures one-toone translation accuracy. We understand the importance of accessibility, which is why every new announcement on

our website is automatically translated, providing a seamless information flow. Our commitment to inclusivity continues as we plan to introduce more languages this year, making our valuable content, such as paper abstracts and webinars, accessible in various native languages.

• Trenchless charts and descriptions – 2023 also marked the introduction of an excel version of our trenchless technology charts, complementing the dynamic charts available since 2022. These downloadable charts offer a quick, comprehensive view of various trenchless technologies, each linked to detailed descriptions on our website. For added convenience, we've crafted a printer-friendly version, ensuring that these resources are just a print away. The technology list, now arranged alphabetically, and the integrated search box, make navigating to your desired technology simpler and faster.

• Webinar recordings in streaming link – We recognise the value of knowledge sharing, which is why we have made all the past webinar recordings readily available through a straightforward streaming link in our 'Past Webinars' section for ISTT members. Members can simply enter their email address and click 'SEND' – the website will verify your membership status and promptly dispatch the streaming link. This feature eliminates the need for website login, offering a more efficient user experience. While many of our webinars are accessible on our YouTube channel 'ISTT Trenchless Talks', some exclusive content remains 'member-only'.

The Watercare network investigation team are currently assessing wastewater pipes in Auckland suburb Mangere East, New Zealand.

Watercare Project Manager Frank Lin said that once pipes have been assessed, the team will begin to work on relining, repair or replacing damaged pipes from February 2024.

“The work we’re doing in the area is part of a $14.15million project to reduce wastewater overflows, build resiliency, and cater for growth in the area,” Lin said.

“The project is jointly funded by us and the Government’s Shovel Ready funding package.

“This will enable up to 2680 new healthy homes in Aorere Park and Rehua Place neighbourhoods.”

The Watercare network investigation team are currently assessing wastewater pipes in Auckland.

Smart Lock Group educates at relining day in WA Smart Lock Group attended the City of Gosnells in Western Australia, in-house relining day, educating attendees on the advantages of using Smart Lock technology.

Smart Lock Group National Sales Manager Mick Polwarth, who recently joined the business, attended the event, giving insights of the company’s non-invasive trenchless point repair.

“As cities continue to grapple with ageing infrastructure, they require effective methods of maintenance and repair, it was fantastic to engage with such a proactive group of innovative thinkers, allowing Smart Lock to be part of their maintenance journeys,” he said.

Through the informative session, attendees learned about the Smart Lock technologies capability and application, to help them become more efficient and responsive to their residents’ needs.

the T2D project is the largest and most complex infrastructure project in South Australia’s history.

“This has been massive year for the project, bringing us closer to the start of main construction works,” he said.

Throughout 2023, the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project in South Australia saw significant progress, with more to come in 2024.

More than 700 boreholes over 18km have been drilled to date, as part of ground investigation works to help inform the design of the tunnels and motorway.

Procurement for the construction works began in January 2023, with two consortia shortlisted to deliver the project. The successful applicant will be announced in the third quarter of 2024.

Construction of the Tonsley East substation started in March 2023 and will be completed in early 2024. This facility will be part of the project’s southern laydown area and will supply electricity to the tunnel boring machines and the two parallel 4.5km-long southern tunnels once they are completed in 2030.

Iplex delivers with EZIpit Iplex Pipelines recently supplied 13 Iplex EZIpit maintenance holes to Hall Contracting for the Beerwah Industrial Park Project in Queensland (QLD).

For the QLD project, which will house 39 industrial businesses at completion, Hall Contracting was contracted to undertake civil works including sewer service works.

As maintenance holes are traditionally constructed in concrete, which often need to remain open for an extended period in order to cure properly, skilled contractors are needed to construct concrete benching in the base.

Enter Iplex with its EZIpit sewerage and maintenance system, a solution

for challenges posed by traditional maintenance holes.

Made from polypropylene, the EZIpit is designed for buried gravity sewer applications. Hall Contracting installed the 13 EZIpit1000 maintenance holes with ease, as installation reduces the risk associated with leaving excavation holes open.

Hobsons Bay TBM breaks through with Lucey named by the students at the nearby Spotswood Primary School after Lucey Alford, the first female bacteriologist

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) Lucey has finished her 670-metre journey for the Hobsons Bay Main Sewer project in Victoria (VIC).

The $206 million Melbourne Waterfunded infrastructure project allows sewage to continue to flow to its Western Treatment Plant while the existing sewer is upgraded.

TBM Lucey travelled under the Yarra River before breaking through. The Hobsons Bay main sewer pipeline will be located at depths between 24.5m and 27m below the surface of the Yarra and will provide a significant increase in sewer capacity.

Now, Melbourne Water will start works on the sewer connections to get the new sewer up and running before beginning its reinstatement works next year.

The rise of trenchless technology in NSW ASTT New South Wales Councillor Sudipta Basu talks about the recent trenchless technology and projects in the state.

If we count the state-wide membership of ASTT, we can see that New South Wales has about a quarter of the total memberships.

Half of these memberships are held by individuals. This shows that the state has a healthy patronage of trenchless technology, and individual memberships indicate that interest is more than just corporate objectives.

Consistent high patronage over the years has boosted the introduction, trial, and refinement of innovations in the trenchless technology genre, and 2023 was no exception.

For the past few years, Sydney Water has been using the rapid assessment condition evaluation rover’s technology for sewer and stormwater inspections.

Sydney Water provides safe drinking water to more than 5 million people across Sydney, the Blue Mountains, and the Illawarra. It also looks after wastewater and some stormwater services to help protect the health of rivers and beaches.

The technology has been useful to conduct condition assessments quickly and economically. It provides not only pictures above flow line but also maps the siltation at the invert. With the refinement of the technology and data interpretation techniques, it is becoming a popular tool for water authorities.

More recently, Sydney Water has successfully trialed lining a section of 750mm diameter sewer pressure main. This is the largest diameter pressure pipe that has been lined in Australasia so far.

This trial, with in-house resources (supported by supplier and subcontractors), is a landmark achievement that paves the way for more trials on pressure pipelines, particularly those that pose bigger challenges such as potable water lines, lines with sharper and numerous bends, and longer lines.

NSW infrastructure projects shine with trenchless From Snowy Hydro 2.0 to Sydney Metro West, infrastructure projects in New South Wales have utilised trenchless technology to hit major milestones.

Following a reset in its project budget and timeline, Snowy Hydro 2.0 reached many milestones over the last 12 months.

Similarly, Sydney Metro West saw multiple breakthoughs with various tunnel boring machines (TBMs).

Sydney Water takes on more tech As part of the program, Sydney Water installed more than 15,000 devices across its sewer and wastewater infrastructure.

The devices – from project partner Kallipr – are data loggers attached to sensors that communicate regular data readings.

Interflow completes largest Titeflow installation The objective of the project at Rutherford, was to replace the pipe, which had no remaining strength, with a new HDPE pipe.

However, most of the pipe was unable to be dug up, meaning the solution needed to have minimal excavation.

Due to this, the Interflow team decided to use Titeflow, its die-reduction slip lining technology, which allows for a tighter fit and maximum hydraulic capacity.

The wall thickness of 48mm meant extreme force was required to put all of the 560m pipe in place and stretch it through the static die.

The company praised its team’s effort in a social media post on LinkedIn. “The success of this project proves to the water industry that long lengths of new pipe can be installed with minimal community disruption,” the company said.

“The safety of our people is always our paramount concern, and this vehicle means that the number of people in the pipe is reduced from about 10 to two, and that includes a safety vehicle supporting the camera work, with the rest of the crew coordinating from the surface.”

Breakthroughs at Snowy Hydro 2.0 The Snowy Hydro 2.0 pumped hydro project has seen the breakthrough of the power station’s 223m-long transformer hall cavern crown.

The delivery team began excavating the transformer hall and machine hall caverns in June 2023, with the power station located approximately 800m underground at Lobs Hole in the Snowy Mountains, NSW. “The breakthrough of the transformer hall cavern crown is a really pleasing milestone for the Snowy 2.0 team, reinforcing that we’re making good progress with our underground drill and blast excavation activities,” Snowy Hydro Chief Executive Officer Dennis Barnes said.

“We are well on our way to delivering the largest single project that will help ensure Australia’s secure and reliable transition to renewable energy.”

Sydney Metro West reaches milestone TBMs Daphne and Beatrice achieved the first two breakthroughs for the project, as work continues to build twin 24km metro tunnels between Westmead and Sydney.

Daphne broke through first before Beatrice, after building the 4.3km section of metro tunnel from The Bays to Five Dock for seven months.

To date, the TBMs have excavated a total of 437, 463 tonnes of material each and installed around 30,732 concrete segments to line the new tunnel walls.

The next stop for the TBMs is the Burnwood North Metro Station, where they are due to arrive in early 2024.

Celebrating 25 years of international success

F

or some, new year means new me. But for IMPREG, the start of 2024 means new year, old me, as the company embarks on a myriad of festivities to celebrate 25 years of global successes.

A quarter of a century kicking goals and expanding to various countries and markets shouldn’t go unnoticed.

IMPREG started in 1999 in Wetzlar, Germany, and moved to a bigger space only a year later to a small town not far from Stuttgart.

Only three years later, IMPREG introduced the first model of the liners known today with UV-curing technology.

“This opened doors for new customers and bigger projects,” IMPREG Product and Business Development Manager Colin Murphy said.

“The company grew from strength to strength and quickly had to move to a bigger space once again.”

This move also marks today’s headquarters in Ammerbuch where IMPREG currently has a production space of 6000m2 and distributes to the world.

Murphy started as Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand in 2023.

IMPREG entered the international market in 2008 following people in the market hearing of IMPREG liners.

The UK, Netherlands, France, and the USA were the first countries to expand outside Germany.

The second production hall opened shortly after with international production beginning in 2017 in China, and 2019 in the US.

The expansion in production also meant an expansion of product scale. Now profiles of up to DN 2000 are possible and the first global UV-liner of that scale was installed in Italy in 2020.

“What started in 2003 with three people in administration and 12 people in production, has grown to 50 people in administration and 130 in production in Germany alone,” Murphy said.

IMPREG continues to grow in Australia and New Zealand.

Working closely together with the broader Pacific region, the future of the company Down Under looks promising.

The team is looking forward to celebrating this milestone with customers locally and globally.

Building on the company’s success, Jamie Patrick joined IMPREG Australia as a Technical Consultant last year.

ezzimenti Trenchless Director Joe Pezzimenti said there is no better proof than two diametrically opposed projects to illustrate a company’s resourcefulness.

“We were the right choose for Mile Creek due to our small footprint, versatility and our efficient set up and demobilisation times and our projected drilling rates in which we exceeded the clients’ expectations,” he said.

“For Newhaven we were chosen again as our equipment was best suited to the basalt ground conditions and efficiency.”

That’s Pezzimenti Trenchless’ latest prowess, as the company successfully completed two major and very different projects in 2023.

The first project involved the microtunnelling of 324mm OD, 345mm OD and 550mm OD Hobas glass reinforced plastic (GRP) jacking pipes on the Mile Creek Branch Sewer located in Noble Park.

Pezzimenti Trenchless was contracted by Jaydo Constructions and South East Water (SEW), which Joe says didn’t come without its challenges.

“Challenges included constant ground water requiring 24/7 dewatering, tight residential streets requiring traffic and pedestrian control, wet sandy ground conditions,” he said.

Ground conditions included sand and clayey sands, where the company completed 1600m with a further 400m to be completed in the next six weeks.

“We commenced in March 2023, with our crew going between Mile Creek and the Elster Creek BS for Jaydo and SEW where a further 750m was completed,” Joe said.

The second project involved the microtunnelling of three 1250mm diameter tunnels for the installation of three 1050mm RC jacking pipe under Tarneit Road with just 1m clearance between the three tunnels.

Entracon Civil contracted Pezzimenti Trenchless for this project, that is located on the Newhaven Estate Outfall Drain, Tarneit.

Each bore length was 30m and the ground conditions was basalt.

Joe said this project also included significant challenges for the trenchless industry leader.

“Challenges included basalt up to 100 megapascals (Mpa) mixed with boulders which required a cutter redesign to allow the boulders to be crushed to allow our vacuum system to extract back to the surface, the 1.0m clearance between the tunnels meant that accuracy was essential,” he said.

Beating expectations in Bendigo with new drill rods Images: OptionX Group

As an old mining area, the ground conditions in Bendigo are known to be challenging for trenchless pipeline installations due to the high likelihood of hitting reinstated ground.

H

aving the right drilling equipment is vital to ensuring a successful installation, especially when ground conditions aren’t optimal.

A project in the Bendigo suburb of Huntly was originally thought by engineers to be almost impossible, but Edge Underground was able to complete the job quicker than anticipated using its modified AXIS laser guided boring machine with new ground-supporting drill rods.

Dealing with complex conditions Edge Underground was engaged in November 2023 to complete a 350mm pilot line to install a 60m 324 OD Hobas glass reinforced plastic (GRP) pipeline.

Due to the ground conditions on-site, such as a previously excavated ground, wet sand, rock alluvial mix and a high-water table, the main concern was maintaining line and grade.

Edge Underground Director of Microtunnelling Adrian Sneddon said the team had allowed a week to complete the bore, with an understanding that it could take longer depending on what ground conditions they hit.

“We used new ground-supporting drill rods with the AXIS machine so despite the challenging ground conditions, we were able to complete the installation in three days,” Sneddon said.

“This was quicker than anyone was expecting and as a result we were ahead of the program.

We had to wait for the program to catch up to us so we could continue.”

Upgraded drill rods have allowed Edge Underground to expand the capabilities of its existing AXIS machines.

Drill rods proven in Truganina While Edge Underground was completing the pipeline in Bendigo, another project in Truganina, Victoria, was underway with the team also utilising the new drill rods.

“In Truganina, we were drilling through a mix of hard rock and clay,” Sneddon said.

“This combination of ground is always difficult, but there was further complexity as it was also water saturated.”

Sneddon added that these conditions were a concern for most contractors as it was difficult to maintain line and grade, but Edge Underground’s modified AXIS machines gave the team expanded capabilities in hard rock and hard rock mixes.

“The upgrades provide better vacuum, and the laser channel is insulated which reduces refraction and gives us greater accuracy,” he said.

“The rods are able to hold the ground open while we are drilling while still maintaining a vacuum,” he said.

The full faces on the dual rods also means that as the team pushes, the system is designed to go straight, with steering only needed to make minor corrections.

Sneddon said Edge Underground also have access to a range of cutting faces that can be

selected depending on the prevailing ground conditions, including a semi-closed face cutter designed to pass material through.

“The semi-closed face cutter gives us the ability to create ground pressure in situations where there is limited or minimal ground pressure,” he said.

“This enhances our ability to steer, and in extreme circumstance we can semi force the drill head through the ground which creates some displacement and increases the ground’s load-bearing capacity, preventing the head from dropping.”

All AXIS machines are retractable, so even if the ground conditions change, users can retract and change the drill head to suit the new conditions without needing to dig a 911 shaft.

These modifications were originally developed and patented for Edge Underground’s parent company OptionX Group’s AdaptX machine, which is a new state-of-the-art modular drilling system.

As an OptionX Group company, Edge Underground had first access to the upgraded components for the AXIS machine and currently has exclusive use of the AdpatX machine. From the Yellow Pages to an association

The NULCA association was founded 20 years ago, when Shirlee Cook saw there was a need to establish standards for all areas of Australia’s locating industry. Without NULCA’s members’ support, this would not have been achievable.

P

eople locating back then were listed under detectors electronic in the Yellow Pages. The industry was not even recognised,” NULCA’s Shirlee Cook said.

“In my wisdom, went to a post office, went through all the Yellow Pages from around Australia and posted a flyer, asking who would be interested in forming an association.

“In March 2004 we held our inaugural meeting in South Melbourne where we had 30 people come along from all over Australia.”

The requirement for an industry body was very apparent – with the need for standards, training, and networking very high on the first list.

The outcome from those who attended was to try to provide locators with leadership and support by partnering with utility network operators, specialised equipment suppliers and regulatory bodies.

There was also a need to provide a direct line for all other parties interested in promoting best practices to reduce and eliminate network damages, personal injury, and costs to the community during excavation and construction activities.

Today, the association focusses on professional utility cable locators and other adjacency services including DBYD certified locators, vacuum excavators (non-destructive digging), CCTV and pipe inspections, utility surveyors, leak detection and ground penetrating radar.

The association was involved in the Australian Standard AS5488 and developing a National Training Course for locators.

“What a journey it has been since March 2004,” Cook said.

Training, industry standards, networking, and not forgetting identifying locating as a skill to be recognised with certification.

NULCA has collaborated with some inspirational people who have dedicated their time freely to help achieve goals for members and the industry.

“The road has been long and slow at times, as we pushed through with industry bodies to have the locating industry recognised,” Cook said.

Anthony Johnstone is a proud member of NULCA, which he deems as a fundamental pillar of the industry.

“I continue to want to see a fair system for locators and recognition for these members for the work they do in the industry,” he said.

Johnstone said this has happened thanks to NULCA’s greatest added values of implementing specific training for the locating industry, providing support for members, and running the first ever damage prevention conference for locators.

“With the ability to work with organisations we have implemented training programs specifically for the locating industry,” he said.

For Coastal Cable Locator’s Scott O’Malley, NULCA is a “great group of resolute volunteers who continue to improve our industry.”

A sentiment shared by NULCA’s Chariman Ian Lambert.

“NULCA has evolved a lot in the past 20 years, from a group of enthusiastic industry participants to an incorporated association to a company limited by shares,” he said.

“Seems like we may have evolved a little but not saying we have reached the end yet.”

NULCA is a unique entity in the industry because of its status, it takes a village to make this happen because it is a work of love with the help of the changing board members and assistance from members “Everything we do is on a voluntary basis, so we do not work for NULCA, we work on NULCA,” Lambert said.

“We wish to continue to represent our locator members and the locating industry as a whole.

With recognition comes the ability to sit on

other boards and working parties and advisory groups to give locators a true presence to help achieve this.”

Moving forward, NULCA’s next event will be its 20 year anniversary to be held 16 and 17May 2024 on the Gold Coast, where NULCA will offer a warm welcome to anyone interested in the locating industry.

“With suppliers invited, good presentations and two evening functions we hope to see all interested parties attend,” Lambert said.

WATER SECURITY

Water security in hot waters Climate change isn’t water under the bridge. Its effects are set to impact the consistency and reliability of global water systems, making them important than ever. But when water security covers such broad ground, where do authorities focus?

W

ater security comes in numerous forms, each as important as the last.

For some, the concept is all about malicious actions by hackers, such as the one who compromised the systems of the local water treatment plant in Florida in 2021, attempting to increase levels of sodium hydroxide in the town’s potable water to potentially deadly levels.

For others, it’s about water efficiency, particularly around the prevention or minimisation of leaks in the system and the challenge of non-revenue water.

And for more, water security is more closely

related to the resilience of our infrastructure and systems in the face of major weather events such as floods.

It is vital to recognise each as its own unique challenge, and to have specific solutions designed by water managers in consultation with experienced contractors.

Legislation around water security According to Interflow Contracts Manager John Weaver, a well-maintained asset base is at the centre of most water security success.

“In the late 1970s and early 1980s there was a flurry of new sewer and water construction

throughout Australia,” he said.

“In the late ´80s and early ´90s, the sector moved away from new construction and towards asset management.”

According to Weaver, there was an increasing number of old sewers and water lines that were leaking, and some of them were laid in the 1950s and ´60s.

“The Environment Protection Authority’s focus was on stopping sewer leaks and overflows and maintaining the value of the assets,” he said.

Legislation was introduced locking councils and water authorities in to coming up with long-term plans to maintain the value of their assets.

“That led to a lot of relining work that Interflow did from the early 1990s, which is how we became deeply involved in water security,” Weaver said.

How to adapt water systems to climate change?

While maintenance will always be a core focus, the attention of water managers is also shifting towards ensuring water supply will not be affected by climate change.

“In other words, how do we take the stuff that falls from the sky, hold on to it and reuse it over and over again,” Weaver said.

“That’s the next phase of water security. How do we treat water as a very valuable resource, reusing and recycling it as much as we can, rather than discharging it after a single use?”

According to him, recycling will play a major role in the water security solution in Australia. This has to do with reusing wastewater in the potable supply, as well as considering where wastewater is being sent.

Discussions around treated water being reinjected into aquifers for storage are all the rage currently.

Western Australia has led the charge in this space, and replenishing groundwater with purified recycled water is now common practice in Perth.

Following suit, a water authority in Melbourne has conducted a tertiary treatment that created recycled water. When that water wasn’t being drawn upon, it was pumped into the ground, into the aquifer, to be recovered for future use.

How do water managers prevent water loss?

Non-revenue water loss is a very big issue in Australia and globally. According to a report from Frost & Sullivan, almost one-third of all water, with a value of US$39 billion, is lost

every year before it even reaches a customer.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, non-revenue water loss stands at around 10 per cent of water utilities’ system input in Australia.

“Of course, the more that networks reduce water loss, the less water we will require in the long run,” Weaver said.

The combination of the reuse of water and the prevention of water loss could dramatically reduce the amount of water required in the nation’s systems.

“And so, a large part of the solution lies in the network,” Weaver said.

“How can the water network be optimised and operated with a program that identifies potential leaks before they occur?

“That solution involves a mix of data-driven technology and proactive renewals programs.”

Is cybersecurity an issue?

As the case study from Florida highlighted, cybersecurity is a central concern for water managers.

At the same time, the cyber and technology issue goes a lot further than the protection of systems from those with bad intentions.

“Power and water security are deeply linked,” Weaver said. “If you don’t have power, you can’t pump water.”

This brings major weather events into play.

Floods, for example, have proved to be far more efficient than hackers at knocking out power and damaging water supply systems.

“We need new options for when things go wrong,” he said.

“We need backup plans, and that’s probably the biggest challenge.

“This is also what a lot of people are discussing at Australian Water Association (AWA) conferences.

“How do we make our systems disasterproof?”

How can Interflow help with water security?

Interflow’s role in water security right now is in collaborating with water authorities on their water and sewer renewals targets.

The organisation’s goal is to continue to improve the reliability and service life of water assets, meaning water authorities should be seeing less bursts and leaks, and instead conducting more proactive maintenance and renewal.

Interflow is working actively with water authorities, such as Yarra Valley Water, on a meter program to monitor exactly how much water goes in to and out of the network.

This will support the water authorities

in their understanding of where, how and why they’re losing water, enabling better asset management.

Weaver said it will essentially enable water authorities to carry out work before problems reveal themselves.

The other major involvement Interflow has with water security comes through the simple fact that Interflow offers innovative solutions that often save the client money and other resources.

These funds and resources can then be spent on further advancing the water security strategy.

On the Mountain Highway water main renewal project, for instance, Interflow turned a $2 million job into a $1 million job by doing things differently and in a more innovative way.

“A big part of the innovative solution comes from innovation and better ways of doing things, which is what Interflow does best,” Weaver said.

“When we’re part of the conversation from the beginning, we can often help release funds and resources into other areas, so water authorities can continue to improve and prepare for the future.”

Inflation leads to more money for NZ project The budget for New Zealand’s Central Interceptor Tunnel project has increased due to high inflation, resulting in increased labour and material costs.

W

atercare Services was originally allocated $1.2 billion in 2018 to build a main tunnel, two links sewers and 16 shafts, with construction beginning in 2019.

Additional work has now been added to the scope, resulting in a revised budget of $1.319 billion.

Central Interceptor Executive Programme Director Shayne Cunis said construction is progressing safely and efficiently across all 16 sites, with 72 per cent of work now completed.

“Hiwa-i-te-Rangi our tunnel boring machine has broken through to a shaft in May Rd, Mt Roskill and is more than halfway on her 14.7km journey to central Auckland,” Cunis said.

“We’ve completed one link sewer and will finish the first drive for a second link sewer at the end of the month. Milestones are coming thick and fast.”

The Central Interceptor tunnel will run

from the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant to Grey Lynn and will be intersected by two link sewers.

The project, which is the largest wastewater infrastructure project in New Zealand, will clean up wet-weather overflows into waterways and the Waitemata Harbour.

Cunis said the high inflation has been reflected within the revised budget.

“We absorbed the costs incurred through the COVID-19 pandemic and we had an allowance for inflation within the original budget, but the level of inflation that has been experienced, it became clear that these rising costs would exceed our budget allowance,” he said.

“Additional funding will come from within our resources and not Auckland Council and will allow us to complete the project as planned at the end of 2026.”

In September 2023, the project reached a significant milestone with the Hiwi-i-teRangi TBM breaking through, marking

the halfway point of its 14.7km journey to central Auckland.

At the time, Cunis said the breakthrough meant the project was on track for a 2026 completion date.

“We’re on track to deliver this project in 2026 as planned despite everything that has been thrown at us—COVID-19 lockdowns, closed borders, global shipping delays and major weather events. But most importantly, the project is being delivered safely,” he said.

“I want to pay tribute to our Ghella Abergeldie joint venture construction partners, as well staff from Jacobs, AECOM, Delve Underground, Watercare and our subcontractors, who are all working so hard to deliver this project in the best way we can.

“This is our busiest year, with around 600 staff working on 16 sites. We’ve tunnelled under the Manukau Harbour, we’ve passed 110m under the Hillsborough Ridge, we’ll keep our heads down and keep going until we reach central Auckland.”

larger pipeline projects. With a combined experience of over 40 years, Superior HDD Directors James Burch and Clint Bass wanted to elevate their operations. So, they turned to a supplier they could trust.

“We felt that TRACTO has taken a proactive stance in addressing the issues that equipment owners have had in the HDD industry,” Burch said.

“From parts acquisition, advanced technologies, to ongoing support, TRACTO really stands behind the equipment.”

In 2000, TRACTO and German HDD drilling manufacturer Prime Drilling entered into an agreement where TRACTO Australia would serve as an agent for Prime Drilling’s machines in the local market.

Through this partnership with Prime Drilling, TRACTO delivered the PD150/65 and PD45/19 rigs to Superior HDD. “We purchased the PD150/65 and PD45/19 to further our capabilities in the HDD pipeline industry,” Burch said.

With 150 tonnes of push-and-pull capability, the PD150/65 has a high rotational torque of 70,000 newton metres, making it ideal for fast, economic, and efficient operation.

Paired with its 330 kilowatts (KW) CAT engine, the machine delivers the flexibility of a smaller machine coupled with the performance of a Maxi drill rig.

The PD45/19, on the other hand, is a small, compact, and efficient rig, according to TRACTO Australia Sales Manager Daniel Toms.

“The PD45’s perfected design and optimised components have allowed the machine to become the choice for many HDD operators,” Toms said.

“As a compact rig, it has set a new standard of performance within the industry.”

With 205KW of power, the PD45 is capable of 19,000 newton metres of torque.

The feed and pull back functions of the hydraulic power rotary head are carefully driven by an internal rack and pinion feed system.

While the two Prime Drilling machines will address Superior HDD’s capabilities within the pipeline industry, the company needed an upgrade for its mid-size rock rigs.

Enter TRACTO’s ‘King of Rock’ GRUNDODRILL 18ACS. “We acquired the 18ACS GRUNDODRILL as an upgrade over our current mid-size rock capable HDD rigs,” Burch said.

With a stepless adjustment of torque and speed for maximum rotational power and maximum productivity, the GRUNDODRILL 18ACS makes an impact in all kinds of soil.

The rig has a fully automatic operation which ensures minimal downtime and relief for the machine operator.

As an optional feature, the 18ACS can be converted for cable-guided bores when drilling in challenging terrain and at great depths.

he new pipeline is approximately 3km in length and will be installed between the Margaret Street Sewage Pump Station and the Ti Tree Bend Sewage Treatment Plant in Invermay, Tasmania.

Trenchless Australasia that the additional pipeline and pumping capacity means that when it rains, it will overflow less from TasWater’s network, and take it all the way through to the treatment plant where it’s treated.

“The most challenging bit with this pipeline is given how big it is, and how built

up the area between the start of the pipeline and the end of the pipeline is, it was really difficult to find a good route,” he said.

“We looked at a number of different options, but we decided to go relatively directly but under the Tamar Estuary twice.”

These two sections require tunnelling under the river at a depth of 40m in order for TasWater to find a good route from the pump station and the treatment plant.

To do this, the water authority looked to horizontal directional drilling (HDD), as it minimises disruption – a key benefit of trenchless technology.

“We were looking at open trenching through busy urban streets, but we found that we were going to have pronounced impact on the community in terms of traffic management and the residential activities within those streets that we go down, in terms of providing access,” Truscott said.

“We also had concerns about ground stability because it is a low-lying area that we’re going through.

“Once you start adding all those things in, the cost of trenching the pipeline started to get beyond what our budget allowed for.”

Truscott said that in comparison to traditional trenching methods, HDD provided a cost-effective solution.

“Once you start getting really deep to avoid other services and those other issues, HDD was our best option, both in

terms of community impact, but also cost effectiveness,” he said.

The new pipeline project is part of TERHAP, which is delivering new sewerage infrastructure across the city of Launceston, which includes a combined sewerage and stormwater system.

“What that means is, during heavy rainfall periods, the system has a limited capacity.

It was designed to overflow during the major rain events so, we have overflows of sewage and stormwater from the network,” Truscott said.

A collaborative project between the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, the City of Launceston and TasWater, TERHAP is part of a $129.2 million investment to implement the key actions in the plan.

“This project is looking at reducing how often we have those overflows, and reducing how much we overflow when we do,” he said.

“The main way we’re looking to do that is by improving our transfer capacity through upgrading pump stations and building new rising mains, and also including some storage within the network.”

So far, the team has completed a section of pipeline, with other aspects ongoing in the project.

“We’re in the middle of upgrading an old pump station to increase the pumping capacity and we’ve got this pipeline happening, which is really being done in three parts ¬– the two river crossings and a trench section, which connects those two river crossings,” Truscott said.

“We’re also building a 10 megalitre storage at our water treatment plant.

“TasWater is about 30 per cent of the way through the overall project and about 50 per cent complete on the pipeline.”

The utility company is targeting project completion by late 2025.

International No-Dig heads to New Zealand The Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology has successfully bid to host the 2026 International No-Dig Conference & Exhibition in New Zealand.

he Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT), along with media partner Prime Creative Media, presented its bid to hold the 2026 event at the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT) International Council Meeting at the Mexico City Conference in October 2023.

The ISTT International Council unanimously voted in favour of the proposal.

“We’re thrilled to have won the bid to host the 2026 ISTT International No-Dig Conference and Exhibition in Auckland,” ASTT Secretary Trevor Gosatti said.

“It will be a fantastic opportunity to promote and showcase the vibrant trenchless technology community in the Australasian region, particularly in New Zealand, to the rest of the world.”

Organised in part by the ISTT, the International No-Dig conference provides a platform for the international trenchless community to meet, exchange ideas and network.

The conference not only showcases the latest in the field but also outlines the significance of trenchless technology in infrastructure development.

The 2026 iteration of the event is set to take place at the New Zealand International Convention Centre in Auckland.

This world-class facility is due for completion in mid-2024 and will include three hotels and award-winning restaurants.

It will be one of three carbon neutral convention centres in the world, making it an ideal location to showcase the capabilities and technologies of the Australasian trenchless technology community.

Since the 1990s, New Zealand has heralded the benefits of trenchless technology. The industry started with small scale horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and had early capability in auger boring.

Gravity rehab began to thrive in the late 1990s and continued with larger scale reduction programmes for cleaner beaches.

Today, many techniques are used in New Zealand including HDD, microtunnelling, pipe jacking, pipe lining, auger boring and location detection services.

Usage of trenchless is strong across water utilities through sewer and stormwater infrastructure, as well as in gas and telecommunication utilities.

The industry is also heavily utilised within

transport for culverts and industrial processes.

Some significant projects that have been completed, or are currently under construction, using trenchless technology include the 15km Central Interceptor wastewater storage tunnel, Project Hobson, and the Tauranga Southern Pipeline Harbour HDD crossing.

With the next No-Dig Down Under set to take place in 2025, the Australasian trenchless technology community has a lot to look forward to. More information of these two events is still to come.

About the ASTT

T

he Australasian Society of Trenchless Technology (ASTT) is a non-profit organisation comprising of members throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The successful establishment of the trenchless industry in Australasia has been supported and promoted by the peak industry organisation, the ASTT, since it was established in 1991.

The society works tirelessly to promote the use of trenchless technology in Australasia, lobbying government and client organisations to highlight the advantages of using trenchless technology and the benefits of training for industry.

Membership is open to all who are concerned with the provision of gas, water, sewerage, drainage, roads, telecommunications and electrical services.

ASTT membership provides trenchless professionals the tools and services they need to be better informed and better connected in this industry.

The ASTT is part of the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT), an affiliation of societies in more than 30 countries worldwide.

Michael Ellenrieder – Business Development Manager – IMS Robotics Group Michael Ellenrieder has recently joined IMS Robotics Group as its Business Development Manager.

“In my new role, I’ll be spearheading business development initiatives, with a primary focus on supporting our distributors in key markets like Australia, China, and Japan,” he said.

“The goal is to fortify our presence in the region, foster growth with existing clients, and strategically explore untapped applications and markets for IMS Robotics Group.”

IMS Robotics Group is a reputable provider of robotic solutions, specialising in house installations, main sewer services, UV curing, and ultra-high-pressure water jetting.

“With over five years in the field, Ellenrieder is looking forward to offer clients his experience in CIPP sewer rehabilitation.

“I’m eager to meet clients I’ve supported with CIPP liner materials and excited to connect with new faces, hoping to build new friendships along the way,” he said.

Jason Marshall – Chief Executive Officer – Pipe Core Jason Marshall has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of leading Australian and New Zealand trenchless equipment and material distributor, Pipe Core.

Holding over 35 years of experience in the construction, commercial and water industries, Marshall’s background will prove a key factor in reinforcing Pipe Core’s existing capabilities.

“With the diverse range and exceptional approach to supporting the trenchless industry sector, joining Pipe Core was an easy decision,” Marshall said.

“I am looking forward to working with the dynamic Pipe Core team to drive growth and opportunities across the industry.”

Pipe Core Managing Director Christopher Walter welcomed Marshall to the Pipe Core team.

“Jason’s previous work experience demonstrates a deep understanding of how our water industry works across Australia and New Zealand, and this experience will add to Pipe Core’s existing capabilities as we service our customer’s needs into the future,” Walter said.

Andrew Taylor – Business Development Manager – Pipe Doctor Australia Andrew Taylor has joined Pipe Doctor Australia as its new Business Development Manager.

Based in Bendigo, Victoria, Pipe Doctor Australia specialises in preventive maintenance tailored for small to large businesses. The company’s expertise extends to domestic drain cleaning and inspection and has a dedicated team specialising in drain cleaning, CCTV inspection and cured in place pipe relining and UV relining.

In his new role, Taylor is dedicated to cultivating relationships with both new and existing customers.

“The positive and professional environment, coupled with the company’s strong emphasis on customer service, makes me eager to be a part of such a dynamic and forward-thinking organisation,” he said.
