THE TRADIE 3
FROM THE EDITOR Published by:

The grass is greener A spring in our step SPRING IS on the verge of … being sprung, which means a few important things for tradies: the mornings are slightly less painful, the coffee might not be needed quite as urgently at 5am, and customers are suddenly remembering that backyard project they promised themselves they’d get done ‘before summer’. For plenty of tradies, spring marks the start of the annual rush. The days get longer, the weather improves, and outdoor jobs start flying in. One project that always seems to find its way back onto the to-do list is decking. There’s something about a fresh deck that transforms a backyard. It becomes the place for weekend bbqs, afternoon beers, family gatherings and, importantly, somewhere to sit and admire the work you’ve just finished while pretending you’re not checking for any imperfections. Whether it’s a complete 4 THE TRADIE
outdoor makeover or simply replacing an old, tired-looking space, decking remains one of those jobs where quality workmanship really stands out. In this issue, we look at some of the latest trends, materials and ideas helping tradies create outdoor areas that don’t just look good on completion day, but stand the test of time. Of course, while we’re busy building better homes, it’s worth thinking about how we can build a better future too. Sustainable trade practices are becoming increasingly important across the industry, and more tradies are finding practical ways to reduce waste, improve efficiency and make smarter choices on the job. And no, sustainability doesn’t mean you need to show up to site wearing hemp work boots and carrying a toolbox made from recycled cardboard. It’s about making realistic changes that work in the real world — whether that’s better material planning, reducing
unnecessary waste, recycling where possible or choosing products that help minimise environmental impact. Small changes can add up, and they can also become a great selling point for businesses looking to stand out from the crowd. Speaking of standing out, few things have changed the way tradies showcase their work more than the rise of the tradie influencer. Social media has turned everyday jobs into content, with skilled professionals sharing everything from epic renovations and tool reviews to handy tips and the occasional ‘how did they even do
Frosty pitch-black mornings will soon give way to… slightly less frosty and pitch-black mornings
that?’ project. Tradie influencers are helping change perceptions of the industry, inspiring younger generations and proving that being a top tradie isn’t just about what happens on the tools — it’s also about sharing knowledge, building a reputation and taking pride in your craft. So whether you’re laying decks, running a business, trying to keep up with customer demands or just looking for a few ideas to make life on the tools easier, we’ve got you covered. Enjoy the warmer weather, stay safe on site, and remember: measure twice, cut once… and maybe don’t let the apprentice near the good timber. Happy building!

every stage of the jointing process, from base coat through to finishing coat as part of the complete Knauf plasterboard finishing system. All part of Knauf’s ongoing commitment to developing practical solutions that respond to the evolving needs of the trade. BaseCote PRO is available in two working times — around 50 minutes and 75 minutes — allowing tradies to choose the option that best suits their pace of work and site conditions. The 50-minute formulation is suited to
fast-paced jobs where quick turnaround is important, while the 75-minute option provides extra open time for larger projects, more controlled application or warmer conditions. The compound can also be mixed thinner or thicker, making it suitable for both traditional hand trowel application or automatic box and tape systems. This flexibility means contractors can tailor the product to suit their preferred techniques without sacrificing performance or finish quality.
RELIABLE EVERY TIME A key feature of Knauf’s BaseCote PRO is its fluid, low-viscosity consistency, which allows it to flow smoothly through box and tape applicators while remaining easy to work with by hand. BaseCote PRO has also been designed for easy-mixing helping reduce preparation time and deliver a consistent compound with minimal effort. It provides a strong and reliable tape bond on base joints, along with predictable set times, good performance in hotter conditions

Every screw counts Why Buildex is more than just screws TO THE average person, a screw is just a screw. But ask any tradie who’s had a cheap fastener snap halfway through a job or rust out years before it should, and they’ll tell you there’s a world of difference. That’s the philosophy behind Buildex. After more than 100 years in Australia, the company has built its reputation on developing fastening solutions that help tradies work faster, smarter and with confidence. BUILT ON EXPERIENCE Buildex has become a familiar name on worksites across the country, but according to ITW Product Training Manager Ravi Naidu, the company is about much more than supplying fasteners. “Buildex has been around
in Australia for more than 100 years, so we definitely didn’t just turn up yesterday with a box of screws,” he said. “Over that time, we’ve built a strong reputation around quality, innovation and reliability.” While the brand is synonymous with screws, Ravi said every product is backed by extensive engineering, testing and real-world application knowledge. “Behind every product is a lot of engineering, testing, coating technology and application knowledge, so what we’re really offering is a fastening solution rather than just a screw.” Today, the Buildex range spans roofing and cladding, decking, timber, metal, fibre cement, steel framing, accessories, ensuring tradies can find
the right fastener for virtually any application. DESIGNED FOR THE REAL WORLD Construction methods continue to evolve, and so do the challenges tradies face on site. Whether it’s faster installation, reducing call-backs or ensuring products stand up to Australia’s harsh coastal conditions, Ravi said listening to tradies is central to every new product. “We take a lot of pride in product development, and we spend a lot of time listening to tradies about what they want and what challenges they’re trying to solve,” he said. Rather than producing generic fasteners, Buildex engineers products for specific applications. “The goal is to make installation easier and
faster while reducing the chance of failures, broken screws or having to redo work.” That thinking has led to innovations such as RoofZIPS®, Teks®, Climaseal® coatings and RoofLOK® systems, all designed to improve installation speed, corrosion resistance and long-term durability. MAKING SELECTION SIMPLE Buildex isn’t just innovating with products. Its growing digital ecosystem is designed to remove the guesswork from choosing the right fastener, with online
product selectors, technical information and mobile-friendly application guides helping tradies find exactly what they need. That’s only going to improve, with a major new fastener range set to launch in Q4 2026. “It’s a really exciting new range,” Ravi said. “We have done a huge amount of work integrating everything with the Buildex website as well, which is going to make it much easier for tradies to find the right screw for the job.”
Images: Buildex
Buildex’s range covers everything from roofing and cladding through to decking, steel framing and fibre cement applications.
MORE THAN A FASTENER For Ravi, that’s what Buildex has always been about — giving tradies confidence that the fastener they’re using has been designed specifically for the task at hand. “When you choose a Buildex screw, you know it’s been engineered for that application rather than being a generic fastener that may not perform as well,” he explained. “Buildex has always been about helping tradies choose the right product for the job, install it efficiently and have confidence in how it’s going to perform.”

Restore smarter Built to last: The sustainable choice for deck restoration and renovation DECK RESTORATION is one of the most sustainable ways to improve outdoor space. Rather than replacing ageing timber, renovators and tradespeople can extend the life of existing decking through careful maintenance, repairs, and refinishing. Having the right tools for the job not only makes the work easier but also contributes to a more sustainable approach to construction and renovation. SMARTER WAY TO RESTORE Warren & Brown’s range of stainless-steel chisels and scrapers has
Restoring existing decking can extend the life of outdoor spaces, with durable tools helping tradespeople achieve professional results while reducing waste
been designed to tackle the demanding tasks commonly associated with deck restoration. Whether removing old adhesives, lifting stubborn coatings, scraping away paint, or preparing timber
surfaces for refinishing, these tools deliver the strength and precision required to achieve professional results. Manufactured to high standards and available in a range of blade widths
and thicknesses, the range includes impact scrapers, bent scrapers, and quicklock razor scrapers suited to a variety of applications. Ergonomic comfort-grip handles provide excellent control and reduce fatigue during extended use, making them ideal for large decking projects where efficiency and comfort matter. BEYOND THE JOB The sustainability story doesn’t stop with the project itself. One of the simplest ways to reduce waste is to maintain quality tools rather than replace them. Our stainless-steel chisels and scrapers are built for long service life and are easy to care for. Regular sharpening
Warren & Brown’s stainlesssteel scraper range is designed for precision, durability and long-term performance across demanding renovation projects
using a waterstone or chisel file helps maintain optimum cutting performance, while routine cleaning with soapy water removes paint, grease, and adhesive build-up that can affect performance over time. By investing in durable, maintainable tools, tradespeople can reduce unnecessary waste, improve productivity, and maximise the return on their equipment. It’s a practical approach to sustainability that benefits both the environment and the bottom line.

Why tradies trust Trex RainEscape and Trex Protect for decking practices MOST TRADIES know water is one of timber’s biggest enemies. Left unchecked, moisture can lead to rot, mould, mildew and costly repairs down the track. But with the right planning and products, you can build a deck that not only lasts longer, but also gives homeowners even more usable space. For Brisbane carpenter Tom Knox from Knox on Wood Constructions, Trex® RainEscape® and Trex® Protect™ have been part of his deck-building
Moisture, supporting longerlasting decks and reduced maintenance
process for over a decade. Tom said protecting the substructure from day one has paid dividends long after the build is complete. GET MORE FROM EVERY DECK For elevated decks, under-deck drainage can completely change how a homeowner uses their outdoor space. Rather than allowing rainwater to drip through the deck boards, Trex RainEscape captures and diverts the water away, leaving the area underneath dry and ready to use. “We mainly use it on highset decks,” Tom explained. “It gives clients full use of
the space underneath the deck, so you essentially get two usable outdoor areas for the price of one. “You have a fully functional deck upstairs, and underneath stays dry and can be used as an outdoor living area as well. It creates two practical spaces without having to worry about rain.” That’s especially valuable in the Sunshine State, where elevated homes and outdoor entertaining go hand-in-hand. “You also don’t have to worry about water dripping through onto furniture underneath,” Tom added. “If you’ve got a couch or outdoor setting below, you
st ayct ed! prot e
don’t have to worry about it getting dirty from debris falling through the deck either. It’s a win-win.” PROTECT WHAT YOU CAN’T SEE While homeowners usually focus on the finished deck boards, the real longevity of a deck starts underneath. Moisture is one of the biggest causes of premature deck deterioration, which is why protecting joists, bearers and other structural elements should never be an afterthought. Products such as Trex Protect self-adhesive butyl flashing tape help shield timber framing from moisture while sealing around fasteners, helping reduce water penetration and extending the life of the substructure. Combined with good drainage, correct deck fall and careful planning, protecting the framing from the outset helps minimise future maintenance and costly repairs. This longevity not only helps with customer satisfaction, but is also friendly from a sustainability point of view.
KEEP IT SIMPLE After 21 years in the trade, Tom’s advice to other builders considering Trex RainEscape is simple. “Honestly, it’s prett y straightforward to install,” he said. “There aren’t really any tricks to it. Just follow the installation instructions. “Trex RainEscape has put a lot of work into its manuals, so the process is prett y foolproof. Follow the steps and it’s hard to go wrong.” For Tom, the confidence comes from more than just an easy installation. “That’s the main reason we use Trex RainEscape,” he said. “Their warranty is excellent and, as far as we’re concerned, it’s the best product on the market. Their after-sales service is unmatched as well.” When it comes to building decks that stand the test of time, thinking beyond the decking boards themselves can make all the difference. By managing water before it becomes a problem and protecting the timber underneath, tradies can deliver longerlasting outdoor spaces — and give homeowners even more value from every build.

FOR THsE! pro Cement Australia’s PROSTRENGTH® Rapid Set Concrete helps tradies keep decking projects moving, delivering load-bearing strength sooner for posts, pergolas and structural footings
20 THE TRADIE
PROSTRENGTH® and water: Getting the most out of your next project WHEN YOU’RE building a deck, the last thing you want is to be waiting around for concrete to cure … or worse. That’s where Cement Australia’s PROSTRENGTH® Rapid Set Concrete comes into its own. Designed for structural jobs where time and strength both matter, PROSTRENGTH® Rapid Set helps tradies get onto the next stage of the build sooner, making it an ideal choice for deck posts, pergolas, fencing and other load-bearing applications.
The Tradie caught up with two of Cement Australia’s experts — Lab Manager Ryan McCasker and Research and Development Coordinator Samuel Gomes — to learn the dos and don’t of PROSTRENGTH®. KEEP THE BUILD MOVING The premium mix hardens in around 30 minutes and becomes load bearing in just 24 hours, while achieving a 40MPa compressive strength after 28 days — twice the strength of Cement Australia’s standard Rapid Set mix.
“For decking applications, because it’s a high-strength product, you can load it much sooner,” Ryan said. “Time is money. If you can start putting weight on it after one or two days instead of waiting longer, you shorten the construction cycle and keep the project moving.” Whether it’s setting deck posts, stair supports or structural footings, getting onto framing sooner can make a real difference to project timelines. STRENGTH STARTS WITH THE MIX Achieving that performance comes down to something surprisingly simple: using the right amount of water. Shocking, we know. Ryan said excess water remains one of the biggest causes of concrete failures. “It’s a massive issue,” he said. “We do a lot of failure investigations, and I’d say around 40 per cent of the time, excess water is the root cause.
“If you add too much water, the rocks begin to segregate out of the mix and you lose that bond strength.” Too much water doesn’t just reduce strength either. As the excess moisture leaves the concrete, it creates tiny voids that allow water and contaminants to penetrate, reducing longterm durability. For outdoor structures like decks that are constantly exposed to the elements, that’s something worth avoiding. MADE TO BE EASY Cement Australia has taken much of the guesswork out of the process. Samuel said PROSTRENGTH® Rapid Set has been extensively tested using the exact same mixing method tradies use on site. “One of the benefits is that we’ve already done the hard work to make the product easy to use,” he said. The product has been validated in laboratory conditions, with testing confirming it consistently
delivers its advertised performance when the recommended water limits are followed. Even at the maximum recommended water allowance, the concrete still reaches its specified strength and setting time.

Follow the instructions
GET IT RIGHT FIRST TIME For the best results, both Cement Australia gurus keep the advice simple: follow the instructions. “Use the right amount of water,” Ryan said. “We’ve already done all the research, development and testing to make it as straightforward as possible, so just follow the instructions on the bag.” He also recommends making sure footing holes are clean before pouring. “You want the concrete to remain one solid, continuous element without contamination creating weak spots or voids.” For tradies building decks, those small steps help ensure posts stay solid for years to come. With fast setting times, premium strength and a straightforward mixing process, PROSTRENGTH® Rapid Set is designed to help keep decking projects moving — delivering the confidence to load sooner without compromising long-term performance.

Nail-biting value Titan takes aim at rising construction costs with nail and gas range FOR MOST tradies, a box of framing nails might not be the most exciting item on the shopping list. However, when you consider hundreds of thousands get used on sites across Australia every day, those boxes add up. With material prices continuing to put pressure on builders and contractors, every cent counts. Launching across Australia and New Zealand from August 20, the Titan’s new Fuel and Nail Pack range delivers the same job at a lower price point, with packs available considerably cheaper 22 THE TRADIE
than the market-leading alternative. A FAIRER DEAL The message behind Titan’s latest launch is simple: quality shouldn’t have to come with an inflated price tag. Titan Senior Product Manager Paul Carter estimates that almost every job site in Australia has at least one gaspowered framing nailer. The new Titan Fuel and Nail Packs give builders and carpenters another option when it comes to one of their everyday essentials. “With the inflationary pressure on builders and
construction costs across Australia, it’s important to Titan to make sure we’re delivering the best value on the products builders use every day,” Paul said. “We’re not talking about one-off purchases — they’re buying fuel, nail packs, bugle screws and other fasteners all the time. “Titan delivers both value and quality, allowing builders to save money without compromising performance.” Available in both bright, finish for interior applications, and hot dipped galvanised for exterior use, the range has been designed to
meet the requirements of residential construction while giving tradies a more affordable option. At a time when builders are already dealing with rising labour, material and operating costs, those savings can make a real difference to the bottom line. SAME JOB, LESS COST For carpenter Toby O’Dwyer from Ranges Carpentry, the biggest selling point of the Titan range was straightforward — it does the job without costing as much. Based in Emerald, VIC, Toby has spent 20 years in the trade and has been running his own carpentry business for around 15 years.
Titan’s new Fuel and Nail Pack range gives builders and carpenters a reliable framing solution designed to deliver everyday performance while helping reduce construction costs
His work is focused primarily on custom residential builds, taking projects from framing through to fit-out. After recently putting Titan nails through their paces, he said the performance was exactly what he expected. “Honestly, I can’t tell the difference,” Toby said. “The only difference is they’re considerably cheaper.” For a product that gets used week after week, those savings quickly become noticeable. “When you’re framing a house you might go

through two or three boxes,” Toby said. CONVENIENCE COUNTS For many tradies, saving money is only useful if it doesn’t come at the expense of time. While there are always cheaper options available somewhere, chasing those savings can mean extra trips, different suppliers and more time away from the job. That’s where Titan’s availability through Bunnings becomes a major advantage. “Convenience is a big thing,” Toby said. “You can get cheaper nails elsewhere, but Bunnings is where you’re shopping every second day anyway. “If they’ve got a more affordable option there, I’ll definitely be buying it.” With more than 350 Bunnings stores across Australia and New Zealand, Paul said the goal was to make value easy to access. “Tradies don’t have to drive halfway across Melbourne — or anywhere else — to chase the best price,” he said. “They can pick them up from their local Bunnings wherever they are.”
BUILT TO PERFORM While value is a major part of the Titan story, performance remains critical. After all, framing nails might disappear behind plaster and cladding once the job is complete, but they hold the frame together so are essential to the structural integrity of every Aussie home. The Titan range features D-head framing nails designed for use in structural framing applications, with coatings tested to withstand the harsh Australian climate. “Our business has been in the Australian nail industry for generations, so we understand how nails need
to perform,” Paul said. The Titan brand itself also carries more than a century of history, originally beginning in Victoria in 1888 as the state’s first nail manufacturer. After a period away from the market, Titan is now returning with a renewed focus on supporting Australian builders and delivering practical value. TESTED ON THE TOOLS One of the biggest questions tradies may have is whether Titan fuel is suitable for existing gaspowered framing nailers. Paul said the TX12 fuel included in the new packs has been tested across
popular gas nail guns and is manufactured to the highest standards. As part of the testing, thousands of nails have been fired through popular gas powered tools. “The tool, nail and gas combination delivered,” Paul said. “The fuel lasted exactly as it should and comfortably got through the full run of nails.” With rising costs continuing to challenge
the construction industry, Titan’s new Fuel and Nail Pack range is aimed at giving tradies something they’re always looking for — dependable products that also look out for their bottom line. For Toby, that reliability combined with the savings makes the decision simple: “If they can keep that level of quality up and make it easy for me to grab them at Bunnings … that’s a win for me.”

Built Together A decking and landscaping business growing from the ground up A SYDNEY-BASED landscaping business is proving that great outdoor spaces come down to more than design and materials. Maintenance work born from covid has since grown into a trusted structural landscaping business delivering decks, retaining walls, pergolas and full outdoor living spaces across Sydney. FROM SMALL BEGINNINGS Anthony Antoun said the business began with simple jobs but quickly evolved as demand grew. Mr & Ms Group operates across Sydney, with a strong client base in the Sutherland Shire
“Laura (Antoun) and I met about 10 years ago. Before starting the business, we both had our own careers, but around the beginning of covid we were both made redundant,” he said. “Laura had the bright idea: ‘why don’t we start something ourselves?” Early on, the pair focused on basic lawn maintenance and small-scale work, even winning a local business award during that phase. The business soon shifted toward structural landscaping, with a focus on larger outdoor builds. “Now we specialise in decking, pergolas, custom bench seating, retaining walls, pool surrounds — prett y much anything and
everything outdoors,” he said. A HANDS-ON APPROACH Laura said their shared interest in trade work made the move into landscaping a natural step. “Both of us have always had a huge interest in trades,” Laura said. “Even when we were dating, we’d spend weekends helping friends and family with renovation projects. “It was something we genuinely enjoyed — getting stuck in, learning new skills and creating something together.” Anthony’s background in structural engineering also helped establish the business, alongside formal

licensing in structural landscaping. “We started there. One neighbour turned into another, and before we knew it, we’d built an award-winning business,” Laura said. The couple services areas across the Sutherland Shire, with a strong reputation for tackling steep and challenging sites. “We pride ourselves on our carpentry and outdoor structures, particularly when it comes to problemsolving on difficult terrain,” Anthony said. Laura added: “Very steep terrain!” Attention to detail is a key point of difference, particularly in decking projects. “It’s the small things that make the difference — colour-matched screws instead of stainless steel in visible areas,” Anthony said. GROWTH, RECOGNITION AND SUPPORT Laura project manages, leads the business’s marketing and is on the tools to ensure every project meets high standards. “When you start a
business from nothing, you do everything,” she said. The business has since expanded its industry presence through awards and associations. Anthony recently received national recognition. “Anthony won Young Entrepreneur at the Australian Trades Championship Awards in 2024. As both his business partner and his wife, it was a double celebration,” Laura said. “I have the privilege of working alongside Anthony everyday, so seeing the man I love recognised on such a prestigious stage made me incredibly proud.” BALANCING BUSINESS AND LIFE Running a business together has also meant learning how to separate work and personal life. “You get home from site and you’re still talking about quotes, designs, clients and jobs,” Anthony said. Laura said boundaries have become essential. “The minute the boots come off at the front door — that’s it,” she said. “We stop being business partners and go back to being husband and wife. Anthony added: “We’ve had an amazing team support us along the way and we’re grateful for everyone who has been part of it.” “But, at the end of the day, it’s been Laura and I building this business from the ground up from day one and still today — everyday.”

Five reasons Bosch’s EXPERT batteries are changing the game BATTERY TECHNOLOGY has come a long way in recent years, but Bosch’s new EXPERT 18V range takes things up another notch. Built for tradies using high-demand cordless gear, the EXPERT batteries have been engineered to deliver more power, longer runtime and better durability across Bosch’s Professional 18V platform. Whether you’re running grinders, rotary hammers or cutting tools, these batteries are designed to keep up when the work gets tough. Here are five reasons
they’re worth a spot in your kit. 1. SERIOUS POWER ON DEMAND There’s nothing more frustrating than a battery holding back the performance of your tool. Bosch has tackled that with tabless cell technology, reducing internal resistance so more power reaches the tool. The EXPERT EXBA18V-40 can deliver up to 2,000W of maximum power, while the range is capable of producing up to 2,400W of corded-equivalent
power when paired with compatible tools. That means faster cuts, quicker drilling and better performance during demanding applications. 2. RUNTIME THAT KEEPS GOING Power is one thing but runtime is what keeps tradies productive. The EXBA18V-80 delivers up to 120 per cent more runtime than a standard 4.0Ah battery, making it ideal for all-day work. When The Tradie put the battery to the test, carpenter Scott McDonald was impressed.

“We did multiple cuts with it already and it’s still reading full charge. “That’s impressive because normally by this point, I’d already be down a couple of bars on the older batteries.” For maximum endurance, the 15Ah EXBA18V-150 offers up to 280 per cent more runtime, making it ideal for heavy-duty continuous applications. 3. BUILT TO SURVIVE THE WORKSITE Job sites aren’t exactly gentle on batteries. That’s why Bosch has reinforced the EXPERT range with rugged housings and COOLPACK 2.0 technology to manage heat during demanding applications. Better cooling means less stress on internal components, helping extend battery life while maintaining performance through long periods of heavy use.
4. ONE BATTERY, PLENTY OF TOOLS Nobody enjoys carrying multiple battery platforms around site. Every EXPERT battery works across the Bosch Professional 18V System and is compatible with AMPShare, allowing one battery platform to power tools across multiple participating brands. Less clutter, fewer chargers and more flexibility make life easier whether you’re in the workshop or on site. 5. READY FOR REALWORLD CONDITIONS Bosch hasn’t overlooked the little details. A five-LED battery indicator makes it easy to monitor remaining charge, while FlexTemp charging allows compatible EXPERT batteries to charge between -10°C and +55°C when used with Bosch EXPERT chargers. That means less downtime, even when working in Australia’s more extreme conditions.

Chasing the sunshine SOLAR INSTALLATION has become one of the hottest growth areas for Aussie tradies. While rooftop solar has been gaining momentum for the past two decades, home battery demand is now taking things up another notch. In the second half of 2025 alone, a record 183,245 batteries were sold across Australia¹. For electricians and other tradies looking to cash in on the boom, solar can be a great way to grow the business heading into summer. But before loading 28 THE TRADIE
the ute with panels and batteries, it’s worth making sure your insurance is keeping pace too. PLUGGED IN One of the biggest drivers behind the recent surge is the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program², which helps homeowners cover up to 30 per cent of the upfront cost of installing eligible battery systems alongside rooftop solar. Interestingly, while battery sales are climbing, solar panel installations have dipped slightly³.
A shortage of qualified workers — particularly electricians⁴— points to part of the reason, creating a golden opportunity for tradies willing to upskill and expand their services. Of course, adding a new service also means taking on new risks. IS YOUR COVER READY? Solar work brings a different set of challenges compared to many traditional trade jobs. Working at heights, handling live electrical systems and installing expensive equipment all
increase the potential for something to go wrong. Before taking on solar jobs, it’s worth checking whether your insurance still suits the work you’re doing. PUBLIC LIABILITY Whether you’re installing a switchboard or a solar battery, accidents can happen. Public Liability insurance can help cover legal and compensation costs if your work allegedly causes injury to someone else or damage to their property. For tradies moving into solar, it’s one of the first policies worth
reviewing to make sure it reflects the work you’re actually doing. PORTABLE EQUIPMENT AND THEFT Solar jobs often mean travelling with thousands of dollars’ worth of tools, testing gear and equipment. Portable Equipment cover can help protect the tools you take from job to job, while Theft cover can provide protection if equipment is stolen from your business premises or damaged during a break-in. PERSONAL ACCIDENT & ILLNESS If you’re a sole trader, there’s no workers’ compensation safety net if you’re injured. Personal Accident & Illness insurance can provide a weekly income benefit if you’re unable to work
after an accidental injury or illness and have been signed off by a medical practitioner. It can help keep money coming in while you’re off the tools—whether the injury happened on site or on the weekend—with benefits of up to 85 per cent of your

The Senix X6 Hybrid Zero Turn Ride-On Mower combines battery and petrol technology to deliver flexible performance for contractors and acreage owners
Hybrid breakthrough World’s first hybrid technology changes the zero-turn game INNOVATION IN outdoor power equipment continues to accelerate as manufacturers search for new ways to improve productivity, reduce operating costs and deliver greater flexibility for professional users. One of the most significant developments in recent years comes from Senix, which has introduced the world’s first hybrid zero turn rideon mower. The X6 60V 107cm (42”) Hybrid Zero Turn Ride-On Mower combines battery and petrol power within a single machine, giving contractors and acreage 30 THE TRADIE
owners a new approach to mowing large properties. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS For many operators, choosing between battery and petrol equipment has traditionally required a compromise. Battery-powered machines offer quieter operation, lower running costs and reduced emissions, while petrol equipment delivers the extended runtime required for larger jobs. The Senix Hybrid Zero Turn has been engineered to provide the benefits of both technologies without
forcing users to choose one over the other. At the heart of the machine is Senix’s HYBRIDTORQUE power system. The inverter-driven technology intelligently combines energy from the X6 60V battery platform with an integrated petrol generator, ensuring operators have access to reliable power throughout the working day. The result is a machine capable of maintaining strong cutting performance while extending runtime beyond what is typically achievable with battery power alone.
THREE MODES, ONE MACHINE A standout feature is Senix RANGESYNC technology, allowing operators to switch seamlessly between Electric Mode, Hybrid Mode and Petrol Mode at the touch of a button. Electric Mode provides quiet operation when noise reduction is a priority, while Hybrid Mode balances performance and efficiency. Petrol Mode is available when maximum runtime is required. This flexibility allows users to tailor the mower’s operation to suit different properties and working conditions. According to Senix testing, the mower is capable of cutting up
to 7.5 acres when using four 12Ah batteries in combination with petrol power. The hybrid system can also reduce fuel consumption by up to 50 per cent compared with conventional petrol-only zero-turn mowers, helping users lower operating costs while maintaining productivity. Beyond the innovative drivetrain, the X6 Hybrid has been designed around operator comfort and usability. Features include a 5-inch LCD display, air suspension seat, smooth zeroradius steering controls, integrated USB charging ports, cup holder, phone holder and 360-degree LED lighting for improved visibility. A foot-assisted cutting height adjustment system provides 15 cutting positions ranging from 25mm to 115mm. DESIGNED FOR THE USER The machine also incorporates intelligent safety systems, including slope monitoring, warning notifications and automatic blade shutdown on extreme inclines. An advanced battery

Power Zero Turn and the X6 60V 54-inch PurePower Zero Turn. Both models deliver fully battery-powered mowing performance while sharing the same X6 60V battery ecosystem. A PLATFORM BUILT TO GROW The X6 battery platform extends well beyond rideon mowers. Australian users can also access a growing line-up of cordless outdoor power equipment including lawn mowers, line trimmers, hedge
trimmers, chainsaws, pole saws, blowers and multitool systems. The ability to share batteries across multiple products provides convenience while helping users maximise their investment in cordless technology. LOOKING AHEAD As the outdoor power equipment market continues its transition towards battery-powered solutions, hybrid
technology offers an exciting bridge between traditional petrol equipment and a fully electrified future. With the introduction of the X6 Hybrid Zero Turn

Next level concrete saws Battery power built for big jobs STIHL IS expanding its professional construction range this spring with two new battery cut-off machines and a smarter way to manage water on site. Battery tools are already a familiar sight on Australian jobsites, but some applications still demand serious cutting performance. With the arrival of the
new STIHL TSA 350 and TSA 500 Battery Cut-Off Machines, professionals now have two purposebuilt options for cutting concrete, masonry, pavers, natural stone, reinforcing steel and structural steel — without the fuel, starting procedure or exhaust emissions of a petrol machine. Both machines use a
350 mm cutting wheel and cut to a maximum depth of 125 mm. They are also built around the same jobsite essentials: robust EC motors, integrated water connections, semiautomatic belt tensioning and STIHL Magnetic Filters to help protect the motor when cutting steel. From there, the choice is simple: the TSA 350 is the compact, single-battery
all-rounder for versatile everyday cutting, while the TSA 500 is the dualbattery powerhouse for tougher jobs and higher power demands. TSA 350: THE VERSATILE ALL-ROUNDER For landscapers, builders, civil crews and hire businesses looking for professional 350mm cutting capacity in a compact machine, the TSA 350 hits a practical sweet spot. Powered by a single battery, the 40V Max unit delivers up to 2.8 kW of mechanical output and is designed primarily for short, precise cuts through pavers, blocks, building materials, reinforcing steel and metal profiles. Its rigid construction and ergonomic handle layout give the operator

direct control of the cutting wheel, helping the machine track accurately along the cut. For wet cutting, the integrated water connection helps manage dust and cool the wheel throughout the job. Starting is as simple as pressing a button, and the clear LED status display keeps operation straightforward. When the trigger is released, the coast-down brake brings the cutting wheel to a standstill in less than four seconds, feeding recovered energy back into the battery in the process. The STIHL Magnetic Filter is another useful feature for anyone cutting steel. Magnets in the coolingair stream capture ferromagnetic particles before they reach the motor, helping support a long service life. The filter can be removed and
STIHL’s new TSA 350 (pictured) and TSA 500 Battery Cut-Off Machines deliver professional cutting performance without fuel, fumes or pull starts
TSA 500: MADE FOR THE HARDER CUTS When the work gets tougher and outright cutting performance matters most, the TSA 500 steps up. Running on two batteries for an 80 V Max platform, it delivers up to 4.2 kW of mechanical output - 50 per cent more than the TSA 350. STIHL positions its cutting performance alongside the petrolpowered TS 500i, making it the most powerful battery cut-off machine in the STIHL range. That extra output makes the TSA 500 the better fit
for more demanding work, including kerbstones, concrete, reinforced concrete, structural steel and other applications where sustained cutting performance matters. More control over how that power is delivered, with three working modes, allowing the operator to select the right response for the task: Power for maximum cutting performance, Endurance
STIHL’s WSA 40 water supply system keeps dust under control with automatic pressure management and cordless convenience
for efficient general cutting and Precision for controlled installation work and fine cuts. A clear onboard display shows battery charge, operating mode and machine status. Integrated STIHL connected capability also allows machineuse and status data to feed into STIHL’s digital fleet-management system — useful for businesses managing multiple tools across crews and worksites. Together, the twobattery setup, higher output and selectable working modes clearly position the TSA 500 as the choice for bigger workloads and more power-hungry cuts. WSA 40: WATER ON DEMAND, WITHOUT PUMPING Water controls dust and cools the wheel, but a hand-pumped tank means stopping work to repressurise it. The WSA 40 takes that step out. Running on a compact STIHL AS 2 battery, it
pumps from a 10-litre tank and holds pressure automatically, adjustable between 1.5 and 2.5 bar to match the job. One AS 2 battery supports up to 12 tank fillings, though pressure setting, application and water flow at the machine will move that figure. It is built for the full STIHL cut-off machine range, battery and petrol alike, and needs no mains pressure - useful for crews moving between work areas, or working where water is not laid on.
READY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION ALLPRO marks the next step in STIHL’s professional battery range, introducing tabless cell technology designed to provide higher power and efficiency under demanding loads. Importantly, ALLPRO batteries are compatible with STIHL AP System tools, allowing professional users to move into the new battery platform while continuing to use their existing compatible equipment.

QR confidence Can your Test & Tag qualification be verified instantly? FOR EMPLOYERS, contractors and site managers, seeing a certificate or identification card is no longer always enough. The more important question is whether that credential can be verified quickly and confidently. Test and tag qualifications are still commonly presented through physical ID cards or printed certificates. While these are convenient to carry and show on site, they can be difficult for an employer to authenticate immediately or confirm that the credential was legitimately issued and belongs to the person presenting it. In safety-related work, that matters. A CERTIFICATE SHOULD BE EASY TO VERIFY Businesses need confidence that the person carrying out electrical safety testing has completed the appropriate training. 36 THE TRADIE
A physical card or printed certificate may display a participant’s name and course details, but verification can still require an employer to contact the training provider or manually look up their details. This may create unnecessary delays during contractor onboarding, site inductions or urgent compliance checks. Verifiable digital credentials are an emerging development across the vocational education and training sector, giving some RTO’s a more direct and secure way to issue credentials that employers can authenticate on the spot. Test & Tag Training, Australia’s largest specialist test and tag course provider, now issues secure digital certificates once participants have successfully completed all course and assessment requirements.
Each credential can be checked through a unique online link or QR code, allowing employers and site managers to confirm that it is authentic and was issued to the person named. The certificates can also be stored in Apple and Android digital wallets, making them easy for students to access, share and present when required. VERIFICATION DOES NOT REPLACE QUALITY TRAINING A secure digital certificate can prove that a credential is authentic. It cannot, by itself, demonstrate whether the training was practical, engaging or relevant to the participant’s workplace. The quality of the course remains critical. This was highlighted by Jeremy Gannon from the Country Fire Authority after six CFA participants completed Test & Tag, Plug Top Replacement
A quick QR-code scan allows employers and site managers to verify test and tag qualifications instantly and confidently on site
and Three Phase Testing courses with Test & Tag Training. “We all found that Mark was a most excellent course provider, giving extensive knowledge of these fields and answering the many questions and queries we had,” Gannon said. “Personally, I can say that it was the best training course I have ever attended, as he held my attention throughout the whole sessions.” Proper test and tag training should provide more than the ability to complete an assessment. Participants should leave with the confidence to inspect electrical equipment, operate portable appliance testers
GREATER CONFIDENCE FOR EMPLOYERS Digital verification brings training quality and credential security together. Rather than accepting a card or document at face value, an employer can scan a QR code or open a secure link to confirm the credential directly. Because the certificate is blockchainbacked, any unauthorised alteration would invalidate its verification. For new test and tag students, this means their training records are easier to access, store and share. For employers and site managers, it provides a faster and more reliable way to confirm who has completed the training. As secure digital credentials become more widely adopted, the standard is shifting from simply presenting evidence of training to being able to verify it immediately.

IF YOUR company is struggling to pay its debts when they fall due, your company could be insolvent. As a general rule, insolvent companies may not continue trading. As a director, you could be in breach of your director’s duties if the company keeps trading while insolvent. In doing so, you could face: • civil penalties; • compensation proceedings to personally cover the debts incurred by the company; or • criminal charges. WHAT IS INSOLVENT TRADING? Your company is insolvent if it cannot meet its debt obligations when they are due. If there is a reasonable basis to suspect your company is insolvent, yet the company continues to incur debts, then you are likely trading while insolvent. Signs of insolvent trading include: 1. liabilities greater than assets; 2. problems selling stock or collecting debts; 3. declines in the company’s revenue and customers leaving; 4. creditors not extending your debt facility; 5. suppliers cutting off delivery due to overdue payments or offering delivery only on cashon-delivery terms; 6. overdue taxes and superannuation liabilities; 7. solicitors’ letters, demands and other court documents relating to unpaid debts; and 8. issues with directors, the board or management staff. HOW DO I KNOW IF MY COMPANY IS TRADING WHILE INSOLVENT? It can be difficult to determine whether a company is insolvent at a certain point in time. Your company’s balance sheet and cash flow is one indicator of its financial position. However, these do not always tell the full story. For example, if assets listed on a balance sheet cannot be liquidated (turned into money) to pay debts, then this may indicate insolvency. If you have any concerns about a company’s solvency, you should seek advice from an insolvency advisor to help determine its status. WHAT RISKS DO DIRECTORS FACE IF A COMPANY IS TRADING INSOLVENT? If you are a company director and a company enters liquidation, the liquidator may issue court proceedings against you for allowing the company to incur debts when you reasonably suspected the company was insolvent. The court claim will seek to recover money against you personally, as the director of the company (now in liquidation). Any funds
Image: kamiphotos/stock.adobe.com
Tackling insolvency claimed will be added to the pool available for the liquidator to distribute to creditors as part of the liquidation process. WHAT ARE MY DUTIES AS A DIRECTOR REGARDING INSOLVENT TRADING? As a director, you are legally obliged to prevent your company from trading while insolvent. The duty applies when there are reasonable grounds of suspecting the company is, or will become, insolvent. The duty includes the general duties to: • Act with care and diligence; • Ensure you are always aware of the company’s financial affairs; and • Ensure the company does not further trade insolvent if you suspect the company is insolvent.
HOW CAN I AVOID INSOLVENT TRADING? If evident, directors should take steps to improve the company’s operations. The following steps will help avoid insolvent trading: 1. Review and revise: keep informed about the company’s financial position with frequent reviews of company records and trading practices; 2. Investigate: if you have concerns about the company’s solvency, take steps to investigate more closely; 3. Get advice: call in your accountant or insolvency practitioner if you have any doubts. Assessing solvency is often a complex accounting process that requires expert assistance; and 4. Move quickly: take steps to investigate, get help, and fix any insolvency issues if you have any suspicions. KEY TAKEAWAYS Company directors have a duty to ensure a company does not continue trading if it is insolvent. You should get expert assistance and take immediate steps if you have any doubts your company may be trading while insolvent. As a director, you can face steep penalties and court claims if you are found to have allowed a company to trade while insolvent. Due to COVID-19, the Government has extended safe harbour laws, which give directors defences in some circumstances to claims of insolvent trading. These give some additional protection to help companies try to trade out of difficulties. THE TRADIE’S BUSINESS
Ahead of the flow Don’t let water stop the job with Kennards Hire WHEN WATER shows up on site, it tends to bring everything else to a standstill. Whether it’s unexpected groundwater ingress, flooding after heavy rain or strict discharge requirements, managing water has become a growing challenge across all kinds of sites from housing construction and civil infrastructure through to mining and quarry projects. Now here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to derail the job. Kennards Hire Water Management Solutions is helping builders and contractors tackle these issues before they become 40 THE TRADIE
expensive delays, offering everything from pumps and treatment systems through to ongoing monitoring and support. GET IN EARLY Kennards Hire Operations Product Specialist — Pumps and Water Management Abdul Nasir said one of the main mistakes contractors make is waiting until water becomes a problem. “Water management has been a growing part of our business for some time,” he said. “Essentially, we help customers address any water-related issue on site, from flooding and groundwater ingress to planned dewatering works.
Our role is to ensure water doesn’t prevent a project from progressing.” While Kennards Hire has built a reputation for responding quickly when emergencies strike, Abdul said the best outcomes come from planning ahead. “It’s critical. If water management is left until the last minute, you’re often limited to whatever equipment is immediately available,” he said. “Early engagement allows us to properly plan the pumps, hoses, treatment systems and other components required, ensuring the right solution is ready when needed.”
MORE THAN JUST PUMPS Many tradies think water management starts and ends with a hose and a pump, but Abdul said modern projects often require a much broader approach. “We offer everything from standard pumps to specialised pumping systems, along with hoses and complete water treatment solutions,” he said. “Our systems can include telemetry, pH and turbidity monitoring, flow meters and even renewable power options such as batteries and solar.” Rather than simply rocking up on-site and dropping off hiring equipment, Kennards Hire can handle installation, commissioning,

maintenance and consumables. This delivers a complete end-to-end solution that can change on-the-fly as site conditions change. ONE STEP AHEAD Water conditions can change overnight, which is why ongoing support plays such a big role. “Absolutely. We provide 24/7 support and use telemetry to identify potential issues before they become problems,” Abdul said. “Our technicians regularly attend site to ensure systems are performing as intended and can make adjustments

remotely or in person as site conditions change.” That proactive approach can make all the difference when projects are working to tight deadlines or operating under strict environmental regulations.
EVERY SITE IS DIFFERENT No two jobs are the same, particularly when it comes to groundwater and discharge compliance. “Unpredictable groundwater and surface water are among the biggest issues,” Abdul said. “Once water enters a site, it often becomes contaminated and must be treated before it can be discharged in accordance with regulations. Without proper planning, water can significantly affect productivity and project timelines.” To avoid that, the team starts with a site inspection, water sampling and a review of project requirements before designing a treatment system tailored to the site. “We then design a modular treatment system that meets the specific
discharge criteria for that location,” Abdul said. “Every project is different, so every solution is tailored to suit the situation.”
Early planning and tailored water management solutions can help prevent costly delays, protect productivity and keep projects moving
PLAN NOW, SAVE LATER For builders and project managers, Abdul’s advice is simple. “Plan early and engage with water management specialists as soon as possible,” he said. “Even if you only anticipate a minor issue, early consultation helps avoid reactive decisions,
reduces costs and leads to a smoother, more efficient project outcome.” With specialist teams located across Australia and New Zealand, Kennards Hire Water Management Solutions is ready to help keep projects moving—because when water is under control, the rest of the job can stay on track.

TOOL UP
Maintenance mastered EVERY TRADIE knows that grabbing the wrong product for the job usually ends in more time, more frustration and often doing the work twice. That’s exactly why the WD-40 Specialist® range exists. While the iconic WD-40® Multi-Use Product is famous for tackling a variety of everyday jobs, the WD-40 Specialist range takes a different approach. Instead of doing a bit of everything, each product is engineered to excel at one specific task. But what does that actually mean? The Tradie spoke with WD-40 Company R&D and Quality Manager Eva Chan to 42 THE TRADIE
learn what exactly makes WD-40’s Specialist Range … special! “Everyone knows the WD-40 Multi-Use Product, which provides five different functions,” she said. “The WD-40 Specialist range is designed to excel at specific functions rather than offering an average across multiple uses. “The range focuses on delivering higher performance for particular functions.” Whether you’re servicing machinery, maintaining electrical equipment or keeping workshop tools operating smoothly, having the right WD-40 Specialist product on hand can make all the difference.
BLOW AWAY THE DOWNTIME Dust, swarf and debris have a habit of finding their way into the places you least want them. The WD-40 Specialist Air Duster is designed to clean delicate components without dragging out an air compressor or airline. Because the propellant is contained within the can, it’s completely portable and ready to use wherever the job takes you. “Traditional compressed air requires you to be connected to an air source,” Eva explained. “The Air Duster has its propellant contained within the can, so you can use it anywhere
without needing external equipment.” Delivering a consistent 70psi throughout the life of the can, the Air Duster is ideal for cleaning electrical components, control panels, power tools and other sensitive equipment. Eva recommends using short bursts for maximum control. “Using short bursts gives you better control and helps prevent overspraying,” she said. “If you spray continuously, you can release liquid propellant, which may create a frost layer on the surface.” ELECTRICAL CLEANING DONE PROPERLY When it comes to electrical maintenance, waterbased cleaners simply aren’t designed for the job. That’s where WD-40 Specialist Contact
The Silicone Lubricant also comes with a 20cm-long Flexible Straw which is a bendable hose that stays in shape, allowing for accurate and steady application
Cleaner comes in. The fast-drying, non-conductive formula quickly removes dirt, dust and residue before evaporating without leaving anything behind. “Contact Cleaner dries very quickly and leaves virtually no residue,” Eva said. “A general-purpose cleaner, such as a waterbased degreaser, isn’t suitable for electrical components because you don’t want water around electrical systems. “Any residue left behind could potentially interfere with electrical conductivity or block electrical contact over time.” For best results, Eva

recommended tilting the component while cleaning so contaminants can drain away as the product evaporates. SMOOTH OPERATOR Not every lubricant is suitable for every material. The WD-40 Specialist Silicone Lubricant is specifically formulated for metal, plastic and rubber, making it a handy addition for everything from seals and hinges to guides and moving components. “Silicone has a different chemical structure to
plastics and rubber, so it won’t damage those materials,” Eva said. Unlike petroleum oils that can attack certain plastics over time, the silicone lubricant leaves behind a lubricative silicone film once the carrier evaporates. “It’s best suited to lower-load situations, such as rubber-on-rubber or metal-on-rubber contact,” Eva explained. One standout feature is its operating temperature range of -40°C to 200°C, while the Smart Straw applicator lets tradies
switch between a precision stream for tight spaces and a wide-angle spray for larger surfaces. SAFETY COMES FIRST As with any maintenance product, using it correctly is just as important as choosing the right one. Eva said aerosol products should always be used on equipment that’s been powered down and allowed to cool first. “The biggest consideration, though, is safety,” she said. “Because aerosol products use petroleum-
based solvents as carriers, users should always make sure equipment has cooled down and has been disconnected from any power source before applying the product.” With purpose-built solutions for cleaning, lubricating and electrical maintenance, the WD-40
Eva recommended using short bursts with the Air Duster to prevent overspraying an area

HEAD TO TOE
Step up 5 Underrated features making the OLIVER AT54 & AT59 Series a tradie favourite A GOOD pair of work boots should do more than survive the job. They should support every step, handle tough conditions and keep you comfortable when the workday stretches longer than expected. OLIVER Footwear’s latest AT54 and AT59 Series has been developed around the demands of modern Australian worksites. Here are five underrated features worth knowing about. #1: STABILITY WHEN THE GROUND GETS ROUGH Not every worksite offers perfect footing.
Uneven surfaces, ladders, rubble and changing terrain can all put extra strain on your ankles. The introduction of ANKLEshield® Technology across the AT54 Series provides enhanced ankle support and stability for tradies working in demanding environments. Whether you’re on a construction site, in infrastructure, mining or logistics, extra support can make a major difference over a long shift. The takeaway: Better stability means more confidence when the job takes you beyond smooth surfaces.
#2: NO MORE STOPPING TO RETIE YOUR LACES Small upgrade. Big convenience. When you’re moving between tasks, climbing equipment or working with gloves on, fiddling with loose laces is the last thing you need. Select AT59 models feature the BOA® Fit System - a quick, micro-adjustable dial system that delivers a secure fit in seconds. It’s a simple change, but one that makes sense for anyone who values speed and efficiency on site. The takeaway: Less time adjusting your boots means more time getting the job done. #3: COMFORT TECH THAT WORKS OVERTIME Most tradies know that fatigue doesn’t just come from the work - it comes from being on your feet all day.
The AT Series incorporates comfortfocused technologies including COOLstep® lining for moisture control, COMFORTcushion® impact absorption and NANOlite® footbeds with memory foam to help reduce foot fatigue. These features work quietly in the background, helping boots feel better from the first hour to the last. The takeaway: The best safety gear is the gear you’re comfortable wearing all day. #4: SERIOUS GRIP FOR REAL AUSSIE CONDITIONS Because worksites don’t always play fair. Dust, heat, wet surfaces and uneven ground are all part of the job. A work boot needs to provide confidence in changing conditions.
The AT54 and AT59 Series combines OLIVER’s slip-resistant and heatresistant rubber outsole technology, designed to deliver reliable traction where tradies need it most. The takeaway: Protection starts from the ground up.

Bosch’s PRO GVC18V-25-120D Concrete Vibrator Concrete vibrators have typically fallen into the ‘nice to have’ category and not the ‘must get’. Well, Bosch flips the script with its new 18V cordless concrete vibrator
BRAND:
46 THE TRADIE
FOR YEARS, corded and petrol-powered concrete vibrators have been the go-to option for compacting concrete. While they get the job done, trailing leads, bulky engines and exhaust fumes have always made them less than ideal on a busy worksite. Bosch’s cordless alternative delivers the same reliable compaction without the hassles, giving tradies greater freedom to move while making concrete pours faster, cleaner and more comfortable. Nathan Dowall from GOAT Carpentry & Construction recently put the PRO GVC18V-25-120D through its paces while working on a full residential rebuild in Doncaster, in Melbourne’s north-east. TEST #1: CUT THE CORD Nathan and his crew were installing foundation stumps across a five-square-metre section of the site, using the concrete vibrator to consolidate each pour as they backfilled around the foundations. The biggest advantage was obvious from the moment they started using it. Without cords to drag around or a petrol engine to carry, the team could move freely around the site and position the vibrator exactly where it was needed. “This mobility is unmatched,” Nathan said. “You’re not using that whipper snipper engine so there’s no fumes – the battery is nice and light.” “You can use this all day — it does the job, I tell you what.”
Designed for tough site conditions, Bosch’s cordless concrete vibrator combines reliable compaction with IPX4 protection against concrete splashes
Tested on a residential rebuild in Melbourne, Bosch’s 18V concrete vibrator impressed with its power, portability and battery performance

The cordless design also makes it easier to access tighter areas around foundations and formwork where cords can quickly become a nuisance. Designed for versatility, the PRO GVC18V-25-120D features a 25mm vibrator head and 1.2m flexible hose, making it well suited to foundations, small slabs and precast concrete applications. Its balanced design helps reduce fatigue during longer pours, while an integrated hanging hook makes it easy to store between uses and keeps the site tidy. TEST #2: POWER THAT LASTS Performance means little if the battery can’t keep up, but Nathan said the concrete vibrator impressed from start to finish. “We were using a couple of 18V batteries and they lasted as long as we needed,” he said. “The efficiency the product brings us on-site; it’s the kind of product I’d get straight off the shelf once it’s out.” Built for demanding construction environments, the PRO GVC18V-25-120D also features IPX4 protection, helping shield the switch and battery compartment from concrete splashes. Given how messy concrete work can be, that’s a practical feature tradies will appreciate, providing extra confidence that the tool can handle the realities of life on site.

TRADESPEOPLE LIKE Dan Maher from L&M Smash Repairs in Seven Hills have had a can of WD-40 handy in their toolkit for decades. What Dan — and many tradies mightn’t know — is that there is a WD-40 Specialist® range including a High-Performance Silicone, Fast Release Penetrant and Gel Lubricant. Whether it’s keeping a workspace clean, or conducting vehicle maintenance/repairs, Dan’s business has everyday need for each of these three products in the WD-40 Specialist range. TEST #1: DEPTH OF APPLICATIONS One thing that blew Dan away was just how many different tasks were covered by the WD-40 Specialist® Range. “We’ve been using WD-40 forever, and with this WD-40 Specialist® range it’s even better,” he said. Dan used the Penetrant on — you guessed it — penetrating those intimate spots on vehicles and components like engines. “This is specialised in getting into those hard-to-reach areas, loosening up bolts or fasteners; things that are rusted or seized,” he said. “We’d use this product prior to heat application — it stops any further damage or stripping components. “It’s perfect for steering, driveline, exhausts and even marine applications — that’ll get the rust off the bolts no worries.”
Dan deals with plenty of old and rusted parts in his line of work — having the Fast Release Penetrant on-hand was a dream for him
Once applied, WD-40’s Gel Lubricant can withstand temperatures between -55°C to 200°C
This is specialised in getting into those hard-to-reach areas
1 2 Next up, Dan gave the Gel Lubricant a go on a car undergoing painting. Accuracy — and no mess — is key here, which is why the Gel Lubricant’s special No-Drip Formula is perfect for pre-paint vertical surfaces Dan needed to lubricate. “We don’t want atmospheric overspray — this product is great for the problem areas we worked on. “It wasn’t spraying uncontrollably … no mess and good penetration to break the bonds on those hinges and stop squeaks.”
This product is great for the problem areas we worked on
TEST #2: STRAW SMARTS Dan was a big fan of the straws on the HighPerformance Silicone, Fast Release Penetrant and Gel Lubricant for providing accurate application in tight spaces. But he was blown away by the High Performance Silicone’s 20cm flexible straw. “That flexible nozzle is a massive upgrade,” he said. “It helps us get into tricky areas.” The High Performance Silicone provides lubrication that repels water and dirt, provides moisture protection and prevents any parts from sticking together. It’s ideal for work on bearings but is also perfect for hoists, valves and garage doors. That means Dan can keep his own workshop in working order while servicing customers’ needs.

Dan Hughes left Aussie rules behind in favour of punting in American football

Taking a punt Risk = reward for tradie turned college football player Tradies and footy go hand-in-hand… but how about college football? Dan Hughes tells The Tradie about his journey from the Mornington Peninsula to Tallahassee, Florida NOTHING’S BEEN given for Dan; everything he has, he’s earned. Whether it’s been on the construction site, or on the field, the 28-year-old has put his blood, sweat and tears into his passions. 50 THE TRADIE
Dan’s entry into the trades was far from smooth. “In a way, my hand was forced,” he said. “Long story short, my dad left my mum before I was born, and she went
through some very tough times raising me on her own. “We didn’t have much growing up, but I was always looked after. “At 16, I was playing for the Dandenong Stingrays
and thought I might have a shot at the AFL. “I wasn’t interested in school, so I left and started a carpentry apprenticeship. The agreement with Mum was that if I wanted to chase football, I had to have a trade.” TIME ON THE TOOLS Dan was a qualified chippy at 19. He started ELSEA Construction at 22 while playing VFL footy with the Northern Bullants.
Focussing on high-end ressie builds, ELSEA grew quickly and — after one year in — the workload was immense. “By 23, the company had grown to 25 employees, with around 50 tradespeople working across projects,” Dan said. “I’d stepped off the tools and was running a sevenfigure business, while still playing football at a high level.” Dan said it was ELSEA’s apprentice-friendly attitude that led to its success. “I saw a gap in the market,” he said. “I’d been treated poorly during my apprenticeship and wanted to create a workplace where apprentices actually wanted to come to work. “We built a strong culture, looked after our people, and word spread. A lot of good tradespeople wanted to be part of what we were building.” TIME OFF THE TOOLS As ELSEA’s success grew, Dan’s footy prospects dwindled. “Eventually, I realised AFL wasn’t going to happen for me,” he said. “After stepping away
Images: Supplied by Dan Hughes/@dhughes_ Instagram ELSEA Constructions works primarily on high-end residential builds in and around the Mornington Peninsula
from AFL, I realised I was burnt out running the business. “I’d achieved my main goal of buying and renovating a home for my mum so she’d never have to rent again. Once that was done, I felt free to pursue my own dream.” It was around this time Dan discovered ProKick Australia — a punting academy for Australians looking to make the leap into American football. “After one session, they told me I had NFL potential,” he said. “Two weeks later, I sold the business, handed it over to my management team, and committed fulltime to punting. “I went to City College of
San Francisco, then to the University of New Mexico, and now I’m at Florida State University (FSU).” SEMINOLE LIVIN’ Year three of Dan’s punting odyssey has him lacing up for the FSU Seminoles in Tallahassee, Florida. One of the more prominent college football identities in college
sports; Dan has grabbed his opportunity at FSU and launched it in the stratosphere. “The first couple of years were tough. Junior college and the transfer portal can be really challenging,” he said. “New Mexico was a great opportunity, but it was a difficult environment. Getting the call from
Florida State changed everything. “It’s exactly what I wanted — a true college football town. “I train in world-class facilities every day, work with outstanding coaches and teammates, and get to create content around the sport I love.” KICKIN’ IT Since his tradie days, Dan’s been big on building his brand through social media. That certainly hasn’t changed in his punting career, with 10s of thousands of followers following his journey. “I was one of the early tradies to really embrace social media and show the personality behind the business,” he said. “The same approach has carried over to football.” Whether its punting, working out or even
Dan punted for City College of San Francisco and the University of New Mexico before landing with the Florida State Seminoles — one of the biggest college football programs in the country
As well as growing his own company, Dan was heavily involved with Carpentry Australia
tinkering on muscle cars — Dan’s documenting all of it. Being a 6’5, tatted and mulleted Aussie certainly helps to when it comes to generating a unique story. “Australians already stand out on campus, and social media has amplified that for me,” he said. “People recognise me both as an Aussie athlete and from my online content.” Dan’s advice to anyone — tradies or otherwise — when it came to building their online presence, was being genuine. “Start with a great team and good clients. If the culture is right, the content almost creates itself,” he said. Dan himself now directs his attention to punting for FSU, with dreams to one day suit up for the pros. “I’ll do as long as I can at college,” he said. “Then, I’ll nominate for the NFL Draft.” THE TRADIE 51

ADAM KNEW he wasn’t built for desk work from an early age. “I think I finished with an ATAR of about 38 in high school, so I definitely wasn’t made for the classroom,” he joked. After a short stint at uni — Adam started his landscaping apprenticeship. 52 THE TRADIE
“I’d never really earned much before apart from working at KFC, so even apprentice wages seemed prett y good,” he said. “Once I started, I realised I actually enjoyed the work.” At this point, Adam’s skills as an apprentice landed him a spot as a Skillaroo for Worldskills
Internationals in 2016. Unfortunately for Adam, the competition was held down the road in Melbourne that year instead of the likes of Lyon or Shanghai. “Around the end of my apprenticeship, I was getting tired of apprentice wages,” Adam added. “My cousin owns a commercial formwork and concreting company and called me at exactly the right time.
“I started there as a labourer, helping with formwork and concrete. “I remember working my first night shift and earning more in one night than I’d earned in an entire week as an apprentice landscaper.” With a job under his belt at Toohey’s Form-Crete, Adam started formulating his next big step. THE WHOLE NINE YARDS Adam’s been a die-hard Cleveland Browns fan for years. His passion for the NFL
led to the creation of Outback2Endzone (O2E). Between himself, co-host Jamie Gartner and trusty ‘Intern’ Aidan Murphy (also a tradie) — the team started posting American football highlights on Instagram. Things went up a gear, however, when Adam undertook a 50-day challenge to get tickets to Super Bowl LX (60) near San Francisco. “We made skits every day, collaborated with people and eventually connected with former Brown and hall of famer Joe Thomas, who’s one of my favourite players ever,” Adam said. “When he replied to my DM I couldn’t believe it.” Even the Browns themselves reached out to Adam to see what they could do to help him get to the Super Bowl. Then, on day 54, Adam was on the train when he got the text of a lifetime from Jack Settleman from Snapback Sports: a ticket to the Super Bowl. Before he, Jamie and

Adam’s biggest leap into the limelight came when he rallied to score Super Bowl tickets in 50 days
CERTAIFLLIED B ER! KNOW Intern Aidan knew it, they were packing their bags and heading to San Francisco. Between brushing shoulders with star players and personalities on Radio Row, to going to the game himself — Adam could scarcely believe it. “Walking around Radio Row on that first day was unbelievable. I barely pulled my phone out because I was just taking it all in,” he said. “I hadn’t prepared for any of it. I was literally making up interview questions on the spot. “I spoke with players like Seattle Seahawks punter (and Aussie) Michael Dickson and so many others. Most of them were just walking around in hoodies like normal people. It was incredible.”
BULDING A FOLLOWING After the post-Super Bowl fever wore off, O2E continues to be built brickby-brick. “You come home from something like the Super Bowl thinking everything’s going to change overnight, but then you realise you’ve still only got 8,000
followers,” Adam said. “You’ve had this amazing experience, been on the news a few times, but you’re still working fulltime.” When he’s not on the tools, Adam’s juggling between O2E and family time. “I try to create boundaries,” he said.
“When I’m with my wife (Jaye), Paddy or Harry (sons), I try to put my phone away and be present. Then, whenever I have spare time, I work on O2E. “I’ll often arrive at work an hour early just so I can spend that time editing or posting content. “During smoko I’ll sit in my car and work rather than just chatting in a shed.” STAYING ON TOP OF THINGS As tradies continue to turn to social media to build their brands, Adam’s advice to them is simple. “The biggest thing is that nobody cares as much as you think they do — I’m still guilty of overthinking posts,” he said. “Sometimes I’ll rewrite something 15 times before publishing it… the reality is people don’t care. People just want something they can relate
to. Stay consistent and don’t worry about what other people think.” Adam’s attention turns to The G in September as Melbourne hosts the first ever NFL game on Aussie soil between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers. “Honestly, I never thought it would happen,” he said. “I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on NFL tickets in America because I assumed we’d never see it here. “Now it’s coming to the MCG, tickets sold out almost immediately and it’s obvious Australians love sport. “Having it in Australia will grow the game enormously.”
Together with fellow O2E teammate Jamie Gartner (right) and ‘Intern Aidan’, Adam’s built a strong social media following

AN OPPORTUNITY presented itself to join a fishing buddy over in the Cocos (South Keeling) Island group. Chasing the fabled bonefish was the primary interest but the place had so much more to offer with incredible scenery, dazzling white sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters abounding. Situated midway between Australia and Sri Lanka, the Cocos Islands form an enclosed lagoon with tiny islets scatted around the outside. With the highest point on the entire archipelago sitting at just five metres above sea level, it’s a landscape dominated by ocean — where a lack of creeks and rivers keep the surrounding sand and reef flats crystal clear. Clean sand and warm tropical water offer up some of the finest sightfishing conditions on the planet. Cocos (Keeling) Islands are in Australian territorial waters. But despite being Australian, the locals are very much Cocos Malay in culture and in person. Home Island is the cultural heart of the islands and West Island is more a patchwork of people plus the administrative centre. Flying so far west from the Australian mainland seems to warp time and for me having flown across
from Queensland, the internal alarm clock played havoc for a few days. There are two flights a week departing from Perth which reach the islands a cool 2700km away. A loaf of bread or an apple costs a fair bit extra by the time it reaches Cocos! A JEWEL IN THE INDIAN OCEAN The waters surrounding Cocos are heavily protected by a massive 744,000-square-kilometre marine park. Featuring healthy coral and rich marine life from a very remote position in the vast Indian Ocean. The Marine Park shields vital ocean spawning grounds for bluefin tuna from international commercial fleets. But the zone strictly preserves sustainable inshore sport fishing. This makes it’s unpressured flats an absolute bucket-list location for targeting trophy bonefish, permit and trigger fish. Fly fishers tend to gravitate towards Cocos due to the clear water and plentiful bonefish. With fly fishing, the allure of sighting the fish you are casting at is the special prize in itself.
To be able to do it in an unhurried all-day manner just makes is all the more special. The visiting season for anglers tends to be October through till May, providing the best chance for calmer winds and clean water. The fishing is predominately a guided affair with a handful of very good operators specialising in shallow water flats fishing. For the more adventurous, more determined or return visitors, some self-guided opportunities also exist. BONE ZONES Bonefish are known as an honest sport fish. They look beautiful, pull like freight trains for their size and are not ‘overly’ difficult to catch. A cast or two close in front of a hungry feeding bonefish is likely to get an inspection or an eat,
which is better than most specialty fly fishing target species out there! With dazzling silver flanks and various shades of green-grey across their top, these fish are highly adapted to blending in with their environment. The grey ghosts of the flats that can be seen quite easily one second and seemingly vanish the next. Something about catching bonefish appeals to so many die hard saltwater fly fisherman. I didn’t quite understand until that first one hit the deck! Ziiiipppeeee! Each morning my mate and I would devour a decent breakfast, knowing that a full day of chasing bones was ahead of us. Our Cocos Malay hosts (there is a small range of accommodated and lodge stays available) were welcoming and friendly.
Crystal-clear lagoon flats and endless white sand make the Cocos (Keeling) Islands one of the world’s premier destinations for sight-fishing trophy bonefish
Once they knew I had a decent appetite, the Malay breakfast treats came thick! There’s not too much point being super early or staying out super late. Prime times are whenever the sun is out and the wind not too strong. Fishing shallow flats over the top of the tide, slightly deeper wider flats on an outgoing tide and almost anywhere in the lagoon over a change of tide seems ideal. The incoming push is like hungry kids running for an afternoon snack. A DAY IN THE LIFE On one particular morning my friend and I putted

out on a tiny boat onto the Cocos lagoon flats. A steadily receding tide was falling until lunchtime. We commenced some long drifts across some clean sand flats punctuated by coral bommies and rocky outcrops. As soon as our eyes properly adjusted to glassy glare coming off a mirrored surface, the bonefish started appearing. Lazy fish to begin with, swimming in twos and threes adjacent to the shallow coral structures, 56 THE TRADIE
mooching around over the sand. My boat mate saw a nice fish swimming straight at the boat 20 yards away. He got a prett y decent cast out in front and the fish continued straight. A long draw on his fly line had the fishes interest. Two quicker strips as it came over to inspect and the chase was one. A lovely bone a touch over 60cm buried hard on his little tan shrimp pattern. Chaos ensued as the fish bolted against medium drag, past a few coral outcrops, pursued by two black tip whaler sharks. With a slightly loosened drag to allow the fish to run clear of structure and out onto the clean sand flat.
The sharks lost sight and scent of our silver missile and a good while later, it was tailed, pictured, revived and released to fight another day. High fives and back to work. But the vision lived strong in my friends memories. Having silently sighted his quarry and finally made that perfect cast to a large bonefish in agonising clear water. Then watch it gobble his offering and fly out across the flat. It’s this vision that keeps obsessed flats fishers returning time and again. We caught a bunch more before the tide hit some invisible point where the fish just up and vanished from our flat.
It was time to get to our low tide stake out point before we lost the ability to get there. The entire Cosos lagoon seems to empty out from the shallowest point first. Vast hectares of sand become exposed and the thousands of green and Hawskbill turtles that infest the shallow flats move wider. We made our way to an area on the edge of some beautiful blue holes. The outer edges of these coral studded, sand bottomed holes are shallow enough to wade on the low tide. Little bonefish lapped around in the shallow gutters on the deadish low tide, offering only the odd half-hearted strike. Everything felt a little
dead until a slender tail popped out of the slick surface 50 yards away. My mate yelled Permit as he rolled out a cast just behind the idling fish. It kept coming up the line toward me, right on the deep edge of the lagoon. Plenty of time to cast my little white flexo crab pattern out in front and let it sink into the fishes eye line. After a few earlier refusals, this fish was all about it, rushing over and engulfing the crab as it settled on the bottom. The big blochii permit covered the blue hole with amazing speed and rubbed me off on the other side. Pain! A soft drink later and as
the tears dried up, the tide turned and water started slowly trickling back across the flats. Impossibly shallow water now held good sized bonefish streaming in with the first push of tide. We missed and mucked up plenty of good shots at these cruising fish. But it didn’t matter. For the next 45 minutes, more and more and more little packs of bones presented themselves within casting distance. A mixture of mostly smaller fish and with the odd larger one in amongst them. A school of around 10 giant trevally cruised across the deepening flat and one even paused to engulf my little crab fly stripped fast on an 8wt rod and 16lb leader! That lasted seconds as 15 kegs of GT shook its head and ran off with my fly. If you kept a 10wt rod permanently ready with a bulky fly and 80lb leader, then the blue holes and lagoon area will keep offering up chances for cruising giant trevally. But this was not the type of fishing we had come for.
From bonefish and permit to triggerfish and giant trevally, the protected waters of the Cocos Marine Park offer an extraordinary diversity of world-class sportfish
It was light gear, shallow water, sight fishing bonefish bliss. We went home happy for an early gin and tonic. TRIGGERS AND PERMS The other two flats species on most anglers hit list are permit and triggerfish, both exceptionally challenging species to hook and land. The tale of woe I experienced with that lost permit was repeated throughout my week. The other three fish I had a fleeting chances at all swam past my shrimp fly like it was nothing. A better angler than I might have had a few tricks up their sleeve. The most valuable lesson for me was needing a fly reel with a smoother, heavier drag. The yellow margin (peach-face) and titan
triggerfish are troublingly odd characters with a bit of personality and a fair bit of mongrel about them. Especially when they have a coral labyrinth within easy access of any forays across the flats. They tend to congratulate in certain areas and whilst certainly not prolific, are well known to the local guides. When bonefish become boring, triggers are what gets the excitement going for a flats guide. My few shots were definitely exciting. We saw a couple of titan triggers, but their eyesight in the crystal clear water was far too good for us, zipping off out of sight. Most of the peach face triggers we saw were large and on the move. But on three occasions, things lined up perfectly. I was wading with a large
shrimp pattern on, heavy dumbell eyes to make the fly sink quickly. The guide yelled at me from his anchored skiff that a fish was moving towards me. An agonisingly long moment ensued before the big triggerfish got within casting range. I sent a cast to about the same distance as the fish, slightly off to the side. By the time it sank past the fishes eye line, no reaction. I picked it up twice more and still nothing. A more desperate attempt saw the fly touch down two feet from it’s face and the fish froze. It watched the fly sink and slowly sunk down to the bottom alongside it, tail in the air, staring intently. A few long slow draws on the fly line and tension, big fish. I yanked one big strip strike and my fly line got
Remote, untouched and teeming with marine life, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands deliver a bucket-list fishing adventure where every cast holds the promise of something special
tighter then I have ever experienced. I raced backwards across the flat with my hand on the spool and the fish raced the opposite way against palm and drag. I lost the tug of war minutes later once my dream fish reached a tiny coral lair and hid behind it. Snap. Shortly after in the same location another smaller fish moved out on the sandy patches where I was wading. This one ate much less cautiously and a solid hook-up and weird head shaking battle was mostly won until it simply spat the fly out within a whisker of the net. All the heartache and pain of fishing is quickly forgotten in a place like the Cocos Islands. The bonefish were what took me there and the bonefish will ultimately take me back. These islands are not the easiest place to get to on Earth, but their magnetic charm pulls strongly on the casting forearm. Those crystal clear shimmering flats burned into the memory bank. Carpentry Australia brought industry leaders, tradies and educators together at Sydney Build Expo to drive conversations around safety, sustainability and the future of the trade
Building futures To Queensland and beyond THE PAST quarter has been one of the most significant in Carpentry Australia’s history, with major milestones achieved across apprentice pathways, community engagement and industry collaboration. From helping job seekers launch careers in construction through our Queensland Local Skills Solutions project,
to preparing for the national launch of the Breakers Program, and bringing communities together through another successful Helping Hand Day, the past few months have reinforced the impact that can be achieved when industry, government and communities work together.
LOCAL SKILLS SOLUTIONS DELIVERING REAL OUTCOMES Supported by the Queensland Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET), our first Local Skills Solutions, Building Futures cohort recently graduated on the Gold Coast. The program was developed to introduce job seekers to the carpentry Nathan Quinn, Carpentry Australia Head of Development industry through practical skills, mentoring and direct employer engagement, while also building the confidence 58 THE TRADIE
and resilience needed to succeed in the workplace. The results have been incredibly encouraging. Participants embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and professionalism, with many already commencing employment or apprenticeships within the construction industry. Watching participants grow in confidence over the course of the program reinforced the value of investing in people before they enter the workforce, equipping them with not only practical skills but also the mindset needed to build successful careers. These outcomes are exactly what the project set out to achieve — creating genuine employment opportunities while helping address the industry’s growing skills shortage. Carpentry Australia sincerely thanks the
Queensland Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET), the Gold Coast Regional Jobs Committee, our employer partners, trainers and mentors whose commitment has helped create lifechanging opportunities for the next generation of tradespeople. COMMUNITIES BUILDING COMMUNITIES Another highlight this quarter was our latest Helping Hand Day, where the Yarck community and Carpentry Australia partnered to rebuild and upgrade the Yarck CFA Fire Station following the devastating January 2026 bushfires. The project provided a much-needed makeover to the CFA headquarters, ensuring the facility can continue supporting the dedicated volunteers who protect the local community when it matters most. Dozens of tradies
generously donated their time, tools and expertise to transform the station in just one day. It was another powerful reminder of what can be achieved when our industry comes together behind a common purpose. A special thank you goes to Bunnings Trade, Beaumade Builds, Glencoe Group, Ninety Three Group and Limitless Build, whose generosity, resources and hands-on support were instrumental in bringing the project to life. Their commitment, together with the many volunteers who rolled up their sleeves on the day, is a wonderful example of the culture that exists throughout Australia’s construction industry. Helping Hand Day has become one of Carpentry Australia’s flagship community initiatives and is now in its third year. More than simply completing building projects, it showcases the values that underpin our profession - mateship, generosity and giving back to the communities that support us. The Yarck project was particularly meaningful. Following months of recovery after the bushfires, the upgraded CFA station now stands as a symbol of resilience, community spirit and the willingness of our industry to help where it is needed most.
LAUNCHING BREAKERS – A NEW ERA OF APPRENTICE SUPPORT While Local Skills Solutions has focused on helping people enter the industry, the next challenge is ensuring they stay. That’s exactly what the Breakers Program has been designed to achieve. Officially launching on 18 September at TAFE Queensland Ashmore, Breakers is an innovative apprentice engagement and retention program designed to improve first-year apprentice retention by 20 per cent over the next 12 months, while significantly increasing completion rates among apprentices actively participating in the program. Supported by DTET and delivered in partnership with TAFE Queensland, the pilot brings together apprentices, employers, teachers, industry mentors and elite sporting role models through a coordinated support network that extends well beyond technical training. The program recognises that becoming a great tradesperson is about
far more than learning technical skills. It also means developing resilience, confidence, purpose and a strong sense of belonging within the industry. Throughout the year, apprentices will participate in quarterly engagement events, mentoring opportunities and community activities designed to strengthen those connections and reduce the likelihood of apprentices disengaging from their qualification. Elite sporting personalities and respected industry leaders will share their experiences around resilience, discipline, teamwork and overcoming setbacks, lessons that are just as valuable on the job site as they are on the sporting field. A cornerstone of Breakers is the close partnership with TAFE Queensland. Teachers and trainers interact with apprentices every day and are often the first to recognise when someone may need additional support, making their engagement critical
to the program’s success. The program also aims to strengthen collaboration between employers and training providers. While many employers only engage with TAFE during block release, Breakers seeks to remove those traditional barriers and create a stronger support network around every apprentice. The official launch on September 18 is expected to bring together industry leaders, government representatives, employers and apprentices to showcase a new approach to apprentice wellbeing and retention. With strong support from media partners, including the Today Show, the launch will shine a national spotlight on the
importance of investing in apprentices beyond the tools. Beginning as a pilot for carpentry apprentices at TAFE Queensland Ashmore, Breakers has been designed as a scalable model with the potential to expand across Queensland before being introduced nationally across other construction trades. LOOKING FORWARD Whether it’s helping someone secure their first opportunity in construction, supporting apprentices to complete their qualification, or rolling up our sleeves to strengthen regional communities through Helping Hand Day, one

thing remains constant, people are at the heart of everything we do. The momentum built over the past quarter has created an exciting platform for the months ahead, and we’re incredibly grateful to every government partner, employer, volunteer, educator and member who continues to support our vision. Together with valued partners including DTET, TAFE Queensland, Bunnings Trade, Beaumade Builds, Glencoe Group, Ninety Three Group and Limitless Build, we’re demonstrating what can be achieved when organisations unite behind a common purpose. At Carpentry Australia, we’re not just helping people enter the trade. We’re creating pathways into meaningful careers, strengthening communities, supporting apprentices to succeed.

On Saturday, 12 September 2026, United We Ride will return across Australia and New Zealand, once again calling on riders to take part in a collective ride for community, connection and meaningful impact. Following the success of its inaugural year, United We Ride has quickly established itself as a flagship national moment for the riding community. What began as a powerful idea — bringing riders together in support of a shared cause — has grown into an annual event that unites owners, H.O.G. 66 THE TRADIE
Chapters, motorcycle enthusiasts and the Harley-Davidson dealer network across Australia and New Zealand. MORE THAN JUST A RIDE At its heart, United We Ride is about more than the ride itself. It is a celebration of the freedom of the open road and the strength of the motorcycle community, while also raising awareness and funds for The Salvation Army’s frontline services. Every registered rider contributes to supporting programs that assist people experiencing hardship, including emergency housing, support for women and families, and financial counselling. The 2025 event demonstrated just how
much can be achieved when riders come together with purpose. More than 3,000 riders participated across Australia and New Zealand, helping raise $160,000 AUD for The Salvation Army’s frontline programs. BUILDING ON SUCCESS For many participants, the appeal lies not only in the ride, but in knowing their contribution is going directly toward a cause that makes a tangible difference. Darren Fairhall, the top fundraiser from the inaugural 2025 event, captured that sentiment when he reflected on the importance of giving back and supporting people in vulnerable situations through the work of The Salvation Army.
In 2026, riders are once again encouraged to register, fundraise and take part — whether riding solo, with friends, through a H.O.G. Chapter, or as part of a dealership-led group. Importantly, participation is open to riders on any motorcycle, reinforcing the inclusive spirit of the event and the broader message that the riding community is strongest when it comes together. THE ROAD AHEAD Registrations are now open via unitedwerideanz. com, with fundraising contributions accepted right up until event day. Top fundraisers will again
have the opportunity to win an exclusive prize pack, including a HarleyDavidson motorcycle and partner prizes. This year’s ride will take place on Saturday, 12 September 2026 across Australia and New Zealand from participating HarleyDavidson dealerships. For Harley-Davidson riders and the wider motorcycling community, United We Ride represents the best of what life on two wheels can offer: freedom, camaraderie, generosity and purpose. As riders prepare to roll out together across the region, the 2026 event is set to build on last year’s momentum and continue proving that when the riding community unites, it can create impact far beyond the road.
