Breaking bad habits Australian communities are a powerful resource to tap, especially when the authorities are looking to tighten operational safety in transport and logistics. Last month, the Victorian Government launched a new campaign, asking the general public to report unsafe Dangerous Goods (DG) storage and handling practices. This particular initiative follows the introduction of legislation that created ‘tough’ penalties for the illegal storage and handling of DG, which could see individuals face up to 10 years in jail and body corporates fined more than $6.4 million for the most serious offences. The campaign, which is focused on transport drivers and 25,000-plus workplaces throughout the country, also aimed to increases awareness of obligations under the Dangerous Goods Act. WorkSafe is responsible for enforcing the Dangerous Goods Act and is leading a government agency taskforce to remove millions of litres of illegally stored chemical waste from 13 warehouses in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. The clearing of these sites is well underway with approximately

6

7.1 million litres of waste chemicals having been removed as of midOctober. Minister for Workplace Safety, Jill Hennessy, reiterated the point by explaining that those who manufacture, store, transport, transport, sell or use DG have a duty to keep their workers, the community and the environment safe. Meanwhile, industry groups such as the National Bulk Tanker Association and the Australian Road Transport Suppliers Association are committed to improving DG road tanker safety through a number of innovations including fire suppression equipment, tyre monitoring systems and even the development of guidance materials under a National Heavy Vehicle Regulator safety grant. The safety of the community – as well as the supply chain at large – should be of paramount importance. In line with Chain of Responsibility adherence, everyone can contribute to making Australia a safer place to work and live in.

PAL system lifts cattle unloading safety and efficiency The trial of a revolutionary parallel access landing (PAL) platform at Kilcoy Global

The parallel access landing platform is set to boost efficiencies in the livestock industry.

Foods in Queensland is revealing remarkable improvements in safety and productivity for B-double stock crate operators unloading cattle at the facility. It alleviates the age-old safety risks involved with drivers having to climb up the sides or on top of the crates to open gates and coax cattle to egress. A joint initiative of the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association (ALRTA) and Kilcoy Global Foods, the PAL project is funded by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) with significant financial support from the Federal Government which has reportedly allocated $3.9 million in

GRATERgate™ swings into action

The GRATERGATE system is ideal for multiple pick up and delivery operations. WHS is greatly optimised by gates that swing open on hinges rather than needing to be lifted from pockets and slid sideways.

ALWAYS ON THE HUNT FOR NEW CONCEPTS TO IMPROVE OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES AND WORK HEALTH & SAFETY (WHS) OUTCOMES FOR ITS CLIENTS, ALLTRUCK BODIES HAS JUST ANNOUNCED A NEW STYLE OF GATE SYSTEM FOR RIGID TRUCK BODIES KNOWN AS GRATERGATE. At first it might sound like the tale of a

our loyal customers. If someone wants something different we all put our heads together and if it’s something we believe will benefit the general market we’ll try to make it work.” Alltruck Bodies’ GRATERgate system has been specifically developed to enable quicker, safer and easier loading and unloading of pallets. The system utilises a sliding side post with a somewhat wider than pallet width hinged gate on each side of the post. The posts are spaced along the body at equal intervals to suit standard sized pallets. Due to the fact that the gate hinges are bolted to the post, if a gate is damaged it can be easily replaced without the need to remove the side post or cut the gate from the post. All that is required is a spanner or socket wrench and the new gate is fitted in just a few minutes. According to Alltruck Bodies, the rating of the GRATERgate is either 700kg or 1,100kg per pallet row, depending upon which setup of gates and post is used.

One trailer, many capabilities SINCE INTRODUCING MOVING FLOOR TRAILERS INTO ITS RANGE, ALLROADS TRANSPORT ENGINEERS HAS CONTINUED TO BUILD ON ITS DESIGN, RESULTING IN A LOW TARE WEIGHT SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN EMBRACED ACROSS A BROAD RANGE OF INDUSTRIES. Based in Albany, Western Australia, Allroads Transport Engineers has been manufacturing trailers for over 30 years and more recently expanded its portfolio to include moving floor trailers – providing an alternative solution to tippers. Allroads ventured into the moving floor space five years ago, when Wilsons Logging came to the manufacturer in search of an option that would help streamline their transport task and enhance operator safety. From this interaction, Allroads produced its

Knorr-Bremse Trailer Roadtrain Module (TRM) accommodates up to seven trailers.

This is important if you have a mixed truck fleet and swap your trailers around, because North American and European based prime movers have different onset and coupling pressure characteristics which if not taken into consideration may affect the brake balance of your combination.

similar industries,” explains Brook. The new moving floor trailer was delivered earlier this year and put straight to work, transporting chicken manure from local chicken sheds to farmers. As chicken manure is typically lightweight, cubic capacity took precedence over payload. Working closely with Barker Trailers, Kyle and Brook came up with a solution that best suited their needs. As most trucks in the fleet are bonneted Kenworth prime movers, the brothers decided to reduce the trailer’s length by approximately 200 millimetres, keeping the entire combination under 19 metres. “This means we can use the trailer with any prime mover in our fleet,” says Kyle. The high cubic capacity of the new trailer is a key advantage. As Brook explains, “All of our tippers are grain spec so there isn’t a great amount of cubic capacity, which is another reason we decided to go for a moving floor. Our B-doubles are

allowed us to get into farms we couldn’t access previously without splitting.” Despite the high cubic capacity, Kyle says, “The Cargo Floor moving floor system can push out its entire load very quickly. It takes approximately 8 minutes to empty a load, including operating the sweeper tarp which is far quicker than our B-doubles and even our truck and dogs.” As well as shortening the trailer body, Nichol Trading also requested a customised onepiece tail gate design. This allows the driver to unload without the risk of the product contacting him and also prevents the product damaging the lights and number plate. The safety benefits of using a moving floor trailer over a tipper were another drawcard. “The walking floor eliminates the risk of falling over while unloading and also contacting overhead hazards which are always concerns for tipper operators,” Kyle adds. “This unit is working well in its application and with WHS requirements becoming more stringent we see moving floor trailers becoming widely used in the bulk transport industry.”

This Cargo Floor can unload on average in just eight minutes.

MOVING FLOOR

Walking with the times OVER THE PAST 45 YEARS, KEITH MANUFACTURING CO. HAS WORKED TIRELESSLY TO ADAPT ITS PROVEN WALKING FLOOR® TECHNOLOGY TO SUIT OPERATORS’ SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS. THE ENDURING RESULTS CAN BE SEEN IN A RANGE OF SAFER, MORE EFFICIENT AND VERSATILE TRAILERS. The introduction of Keith’s rugged V-FLOOR® slat system some 15 years ago allowed the owners of thus equipped trailers to take on loads others had to pass on. The V-FLOOR® slats are designed for the harshest of conditions and feature ultrahigh impact and abrasion resistance. Accordingly, they are suitable for demanding loads including demolition, scrap metal, aggregate, asphalt and specialty waste products such as fly ash. With today’s tight operating climate, transport operators must maximise trailer utilisation and having equipment which enables the backhauling of a range of products has the potential to significantly increase the overall efficiency of the fleet. According to Keith, recent improvements to the V-FLOOR® design have increased the versatility of the unloading system.

Improvements to the V-FLOOR® design have increased the versatility of the unloading system.

providing flows up to 50 litres per minute or a DC power pack, is usually installed. This is often fitted adjacent to the hydraulic cylinder and enclosed in a protective case. A pendant switch controller operates the required tilt, lifting or lowering function, as well as the reverse operation of the unit. At the flick of a switch, hydraulic power provides a safe, reliable and effective way to lift and move heavy loads or equipment with ease. Hydraulic power packs come in all shapes and sizes, depending on the amount of force required. Some are small, compact and portable, for use with a variety of applications and others are larger and fixed into position. Generally, most hydraulic power packs will consist of a hydraulic reservoir, a gauge, pump, motor and the hoses that provide supply and relief to the system. In a typical hydraulic configuration, the process begins with mechanical power in the form of a rotating shaft, which is then converted to hydraulic power and directed via a valve to either a cylinder or a motor, then converted back to mechanical power. This works by utilising fluid power to control the application of force. Hydraulic applications are based on flow and pressure requirements. Flow, expressed in litres per minute (lpm), determines the speed at which a hydraulic cylinder extends or a hydraulic motor turns. Flow is produced by the pump. Pressure, commonly expressed as pounds per square inch (PSI), BAR or MPA, determines the amount of force exerted. Pressure occurs when flow meets resistance, which in turn creates the force required to complete the action. The BOSS range of hydraulic components, by PT Hydraulics, is reported to be perfect

A perfect pair BEING REGIONALLY BASED, PUMPA MANUFACTURING IS QUITE SELECTIVE IN CHOOSING ITS SUPPLIERS – BUT THE TRAILER MANUFACTURER HAS MET ITS MATCH. THANKS TO A HIGH QUALITY PRODUCT OFFERING AND GREAT CUSTOMER SUPPORT, JOST AUSTRALIA IS ITS SUPPLIER OF CHOICE FOR EVERYTHING FROM FIFTH WHEELS TO HYDRAULICS. Based in Swan Hill in Victoria’s north-west, Pumpa Manufacturing produces a wide range of trailers. The business was originally started in the 1980s and acquired by Jason King and Michael Bulluss from Tony Pumpa in 2015, both bringing with them decades of experience in the trailer sector. Through the manufacture of various tipper configurations, low loaders and car transporters, the business built its reputation based on quality and innovation. While Pumpa continues to build on its range within each of these product segments, it also offers a new range of trailers with more developments on the way. The current range includes moving floor trailers for chip and leak-proof refuse, flat tops, drop deck wideners, bottom dumpers, dry freight vans, curtainsiders, dollies,

SUPPLYING

THE WALLS AND WHEELS

DELIVERY THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO OPERATE A TRANSPORT BUSINESS IN AUSTRALIA, BUT THE FRANCHISE MODEL IS STILL COMPARATIVELY RARE. MOOREBANK-BASED PACK & SEND HAS PERFECTED THE CONCEPT. Interview by Sebastian Grote

FAST FACT

According to Pack & Send CEO, Michael Paul, the company’s franchise model is key to ensuring a ‘premium service’ experience. “Our franchisees are our movers and shakers. They’re the faces of the overall business, and of their individual businesses too. As members of the communities they service, they play an integral role in the local marketing of Pack & Send,” he says. In contrast, the role of the franchisor is to provide franchisees with a solid foundation of business systems, or “small business with the tools of a big business,” as Michael puts it. 34

feb r ua r y 2 0 1 6

Q: Pack & Send has been around for a while now. Is the 2016 business still comparable to the one 22 years ago – for example, is parcel delivery still the core of the business? A: The Pack & Send business has changed tremendously since 1993. We started it before the notion of e-commerce, or even the Internet, was in the vernacular, so there has been a significant shift in the way we function. But our mission has always been the same – providing convenient access to a wide range of solutions when sending anything, anywhere. The types of services we can offer are now more varied, though – from traditional

domestic and international import and export work to more modern services, like supporting eBay and online retailers in delivering their products to customers. Q: How did the parcel delivery industry change since the early days? With Toll IPEC, Star Track and emerging online services like Sendle on the scene, the competition must be fierce. A: The parcel delivery industry has evolved with the times. For example, customers today expect that a fundamental requirement of parcel delivery services is an online ‘track and trace’ function that provides a real time delivery status. When we started in 1993, no parcel carrier in Australia had that capability as the technology wasn’t yet in place. You had to phone the carrier to find out exactly where your parcel was – and you usually got a response the next day. In the early days, deliveries were also primarily B2B and very few deliveries were made to households. The growth of e-commerce has changed that, with significantly more B2C deliveries. In line with that, the competition has also changed – for example, where Pack & Send once relied either on customers walking in store or phoning us to send their goods, we are now developing new and

order to comply with more than the usual Commonwealth, State and local regulations and has resulted in an ultrahigh technology facility that is covered by 69 safety and security cameras and extensive on-site fire detection and fire fighting systems. The authorities are anxious to prevent any incidents that could affect the operation of the airport so there is a continuous sampling of air to detect any smoke and the entire fire and security system is tamper monitored. The warehouse has nine robotic doors, which will open in the event of a fire to vent any smoke. The warehouse has a footprint of 11,000 square metres of which 50 per cent is refrigerated in four different temperature zones using a very efficient refrigeration plant that utilises ammonia rather than the more common Freon. The move from QFS’s previous premises in Stafford required 5,000 pallets to be moved in a 72 hour period and as the QFS fleet needed to continue to deliver goods to customers, contractors were engaged to handle the 120 trailer loads of products. A distinct point of difference between QFS and other food service suppliers

The truck brand of choice at QFS is Hino, mostly the wide body 500 Series with 260 horsepower engines and Allison automatic transmissions. is the extensive and ever increasing range of gourmet items that it has available including boutique nonalcoholic beverages. The beverage sector is a growing market and drinks now account for around 10 per cent of sales with almost 700 different beverage products available. The warehouse holds bay after bay of food service products that are not readily available in retail supermarkets and are required by catering, hospitality and cooked food outlets. One of the advantages of expanding the beverage business is the opportunity to cross sell food service products to those on the beverage customers’ base. “With beverages we don’t deal with the chef as we often do with food products,” says Brian Saharin, QFS General Manager. “Instead we deal with the front of house.” This opens the possibility to provide ancillary items such as napkins, coasters and straws and

customers who were predominantly beverage clients are now able to obtain food service products as well. This also translates into the opportunity for traditional food customers to amalgamate their beverage and food orders. QFS Company Director Guy Politi says that there is a trend in demand towards some higher quality food and beverages. “It can be tomato paste from Italy or cooking oil from Malaysia. We import a lot of quality gourmet products such as flour, rice and confectionery,” Guy says. The truck brand of choice at QFS is Hino, mostly the wide body 500 Series with 260 horsepower engines and Allison automatic transmissions. Trucks that have entered the QFS fleet as assets of various business acquisitions will be progressively replaced with more Hinos to join the 39 Hinos that are already in the fleet. The decision to adopt Hino as
