Partnerships against pandemic Is the medical supply chain ready to deliver when a viable Covid-19 vaccine is packaged for distribution? This is a question that DHL in partnership with analytics partner McKinsey & Company has considered.

By their reckoning, there are more than 250 vaccines across seven platforms being developed and tested. The logistical challenges of maintaining stringent temperature requirements (up to -80°C) during transportation and warehousing, for instance, is concerning when the current network generally distributes vaccines at ~2-8°C. This freight task is truly immense when you look at the projections for global vaccine distribution, including up to 200,000 pallet shipments, 15 million deliveries in cooling boxes as well as 15,000 flights which will reportedly be required across various supply chain arrangements.

DHL Chief Commercial Officer, Katja Busch, explained that sufficient planning and appropriate partnerships within the supply chain can play a key role in protecting lives against the pandemic as governments work to secure critical medical supplies

during health emergencies.

While we deal with the current Covid-19 situation, what will our world leaders and key industry decision makers do to improve the medical supply chain? For DHL, one of the most crucial activities in pandemic response management was bringing medical supplies such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from distant sources to use as at the frontline. When UNICEF sourced 100 times more face masks and 2,000 times more medical gloves than in 2019, PPE proved to be a major challenge for inbound logistics due to geographically concentrated production, limited airfreight capacity and a lack of inbound quality checks. DHL asserts that a comprehensive setup of public health crisis strategies and structure needs to be established by governments with partnerships from both public and private sectors to ensure a stable medical supply in a future health crisis. Sounds quite right, too.
