SERVICE AND SUPPORT

T

he harshness of quarrying puts equipment through its paces. The nature of the tasks carried out in the quarry can cause equipment to breakdown.

All it takes is for one of the many moving parts to fail to cause a cascade of problems. And if this happens out of the blue, vital equipment could be out of action for days.

This is unacceptable for most businesses, and even more critical for quarries where every minute of unplanned downtime is costly.

This is especially important for sites in remote locations, where support can be hundreds of kilometres away.

If a critical machine goes down, that could lead to multiple days without production.

Routine maintenance is commonplace as a result, but it also carries with it some flaws.

On large sites, a problem occurring in a component could be very small and easy to miss. It could even be hidden out of the way, in an area that is difficult or unsafe to access normally.

In this edition of Quarry, we highlight the organisations and technologies that are helping the industry stay on top of their maintenance needs.

One emerging technology that is gaining popularity across the sector is harnessing data. By using information gathered from equipment, quarries can better understand exactly what is happening at the site.

In some cases, this information can even be used to predict when something will go wrong, giving the site plenty of time to account for it in dedicated periods of downtime.

Not all support is so hightech. In many cases, suppliers offer a personal touch by building a strong relationship with quarries. In doing so, they learn about the unique needs of the quarry, and how to best keep things running.

BUILDING SECTOR STRENGTH THROUGH CONNECTION

A

s we reflect on the first quarter of 2025, I’m encouraged by the strong engagement across our IQA community. While continuing education and professional development remain central to our mission, it’s the connections between professionals that truly define our organisation’s value.

KNOWLEDGE SHARING ACROSS GENERATIONS I’ve been particularly heartened by the cross-generational knowledge sharing happening at branch events nationwide.

These interactions reflect exactly what we hope to formalise through our upcoming mentoring program – creating structured opportunities for experienced quarrying professionals to guide emerging talent while promoting innovation and fresh perspectives.

STRATEGIC GROWTH AND EDUCATION The success of our strategic growth webinar series demonstrates the appetite for targeted business acumen within our community. The 29 April session on succession planning addresses a critical need for many quarry businesses considering their long-term future.

Our education offerings continue to evolve. Beyond technical training, we’re expanding into important areas like mental health and contractor safety management. These additions acknowledge that today’s quarry professionals need diverse skills beyond operational expertise. Keep an eye out for upcoming education and professional development initiatives.

INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE WORKFORCE As we look toward innovative ways to attract talent, we are working on

developing a school workforce program that represents investment in the sector’s future.

By introducing quarrying careers to students, we’re addressing the long-term workforce sustainability challenge while showcasing the sophisticated technology and environmental stewardship that defines modern quarrying.

OUT AND ABOUT WITH THE IQA BRANCHES STRONG START FOR FNQ SUBBRANCH WITH RECORD ATTENDANCE IN CAIRNS The FNQ sub-branch kicked off its 2025 calendar with an impressive gathering of more than 35 quarrying professionals in Cairns.

The strong turnout for this first dinner meeting of the year reflects the growing engagement within the Far North Queensland quarrying community. Attendees represented a broad cross-section of the region’s extractive sector professionals, creating valuable networking opportunities.

Three knowledgeable speakers shared insights with the assembled guests: • Lionel Smith (Resources Safety & Health Queensland) addressed regulatory considerations and safety priorities • Tony Clear (Komatsu) discussed equipment innovations relevant to tropical quarrying operations • Michael Markwell (Taro Software) presented solutions for optimizing operational efficiency Each presentation sparked engaging discussions that continued during the networking portions of the evening, allowing colleagues to exchange ideas and experiences in a relaxed setting.

YOUNG MINDS MEET MASSIVE INFRASTRUCTURE Brisbane’s largest infrastructure project, Cross River Rail, became the backdrop for fresh thinking and vibrant networking as the Queensland branch launched its inaugural YMN mastermind session on 26 March.

The buzz was palpable at the Cross River Rail Experience Centre, where YMN Coordinators Matthew Ferguson and Ryan Grech kicked off what promises to be a game-changing format for the sector’s rising stars.

“We wanted to break away from traditional presentations and create something more dynamic,” Ferguson said. “Seeing these young professionals connecting and collaborating was exactly what we’d hoped for.”

The day shifted into high gear when attendees stepped into the project’s impressive virtual theatre at the Elizabeth Street precinct. The massive tunnelling operation came to life through cutting-edge digital technology, offering a rare glimpse behind the construction barriers of Brisbane’s ambitious infrastructure project.

CENTRAL QUEENSLAND SUB BRANCH EXPLORES MT CHALMERS MINING HERITAGE Central Queensland quarrying professionals gathered at Parkhurst Tavern before traveling to the Mt Chalmers History Centre, where they explored an impressive collection of photographs and artifacts. The journey continued to the Mt Chalmers Copper-Gold Mine, where Andrew Sparke, executive chairman of QMines, led an informative site tour. Sparke shared insights into the site’s historical significance while outlining QMines’ vision for its future development.

“Mt Chalmers perfectly demonstrates how we can honor our industry’s heritage while embracing innovation,” Central Queensland sub-branch chairperson Nathan Parziani said.

The event concluded at Parkhurst Tavern, where attendees enjoyed refreshments while discussing the day’s experiences and strengthening professional connections.

“Having 34 participants for our first event shows the vibrant mining community we have in central Queensland,” committee member Sam Hill commented said.

BOWLS DAY BRINGS SECTOR TOGETHER The South Perth Bowls Club played host to the IQA WA Bowls Day on Friday 7 March, where sector professionals enjoyed an evening of friendly competition and networking against a spectacular sunset.

Striker Western Australia’s director of strategic initiatives Jordan Pedley said the quarry industry in WA was built on strong relationships, and with so much of it operating in remote locations across the state, events like the WA Bowls Day were invaluable.

Participants tested their skills on the green before enjoying a generous barbecue and refreshments provided by event major sponsor WA Limestone, a consistent supporter of IQA initiatives.

TICKING ALL THE BOXES Kobelco has supported Graymont’s operations to deliver across its high-production sites with a robust excavator.

P

roduction of lime and limestone solutions puts equipment to the test, which is why Canadian company Graymont prioritises dependability and performance.

So when the company began searching for a new heavy-duty excavator in Australia, the Kobelco SK500XD ticked all the boxes.

“We were in the market for a good, reliable machine that was well supported by the dealer,” Graymont Attunga plant site manager Damian Power told Quarry.

“They’re reliable machines. We’re very happy with them and looking forward to continue seeing these great results.”

The SK500XD has supported Graymont’s production.

Graymont’s limestone and lime products in Australia are produced along the country’s east coast and in South Australia and Tasmania. These sites are part of Graymont’s global network, which includes New Zealand, Malaysia, and the Philippines, as well as the North American market.

Limestone has a wide range of applications ranging from road stabilisation, asphalt, water treatment, steel making and metalliferous processing.

Due to the level of production it required, Graymont needed the new excavator to be durable and fuel-efficient. According to Kobelco, the SK500XD can achieve an

average fuel consumption under 30L/hr in typical Australian heavy digging conditions.

It features three work modes: heavyduty and standard work options and an ECO mode. The eco mode is designed to automatically optimise digging efficiency, which, according to Kobelco, delivers a 13 per cent decrease in fuel consumption.

The boom-to-arm hydraulic regeneration system improves the fuel efficiency. The system uses hydraulic pressure from the boom down function to assist arm out movement, reducing the demand on the hydraulic pump. This means the SK500XD requires less fluid from the pump,

reducing the hydraulic workload and leading to higher fuel savings.

“We did our homework and looked at the excavators that were available. A major Tamworth business had given them a go and were happy with them,” Power said.

“It has one of the lowest fuel burns of all the diggers we looked at,” he said. “That adds up. It means we’re spending less on fuel and

emitting less carbon, which is becoming even more important.”

Graymont’s operators have been impressed by the SK500XD’s performance across the Australian operations. Kobelco has equipped the cabin with key technology to make the operator’s job easier.

The cabin features a colour LCD multidisplay screen with all the important information operators need, including fuel consumption and maintenance intervals, as well as an integrated rear-view camera.

The front window provides an unobstructed view for greater visibility. The operator’s cabin is pressurised, providing a quiet and airtight work environment free from dust. A heated and air-cushioned suspension seat provides protection from vibration for the operator.

“The cabin is spacious and feels comfortable to sit in for extended periods of time. It’s got a large front window and a lot of noise dampening inside,” Power said.

“It’s also got a heated and air-cushioned suspension seat, protecting the operator from vibration, with climate control to keep you cool on hot days.

“The SK500XD ticked all the boxes – it is ergonomic, has low noise output and is economical to run.”

DURABLE DESIGN Weighing in at 52,200kg, the machine is one of the heaviest in its class with reinforcement in key areas.

The robust machine body is purpose built and includes reinforcement to key areas of stress and wear across the boom, arm, underbody, and undercarriage.

The heavy-duty boom and arm are specifically designed to withstand the rigours of quarrying.

Kobelco manufactured the boom and arm with factory-fitted, triple-plated hardened steel applied to all key structural sections, including

the boom-to-arm connection, the boom centre, and the end of the arm.

“There is a reason why the SK500XD has been popular since it arrived in Australia and it’s because it stands up in Australian conditions,” Kobelco Australia general manager Mark Johnson said.

“From an engineering perspective, its design allows for additional strength and reinforcement in the key areas which quarries need.

“All of our quarry customers have been impressed by its performance. You’re getting a purpose-built Extreme Duty machine that also delivers with its fuel efficiency.”

The full-length rock guard is specially designed and installed on the inside of the dipper arm. rancieli Martin arrived in Australia determined to make a career and grab an opportunity to show a future employer what they could do.

After arriving from Brazil, Martin looked for an opportunity to get started in the asphalt industry. The trouble was that Martin did not know how to break into the industry despite believing she had the capabilities to thrive in it.

Amarapave helped Francieli Martin land a job at Citywide Asphalt Group.

“I came to Australia around three years ago and while I’ve been studying some English, when I came to Australia, I had no English,” Martin told Quarry. “I used to work as a traffic controller, and that’s when I saw all of the opportunities out there. I saw how they’d lay out the asphalt and all of these things which I had never seen before. “[Then] I saw Amarapave, and I felt like they really understood me, and they really helped.”

Amarapave was created by co-founders Jenika Stubelj and Ash MacMahon, who serve as managing director and field director within the organisation respectively.

The pair had been working on different sides of the asphalt industry, with Stubelj, a chief operating officer at an asphalt company and MacMahon, an asphalter and plant operator, prior to launching the company.

In many ways, they created Amarapave to help people in Martin’s exact situation; they wanted to break into the asphalt industry but were unsure how to take the first steps. By working with people from diverse backgrounds, MacMahon and Stubelj have a business which helps lift diversity and inclusion in the asphalt industry.

They supported Martin through the job interviews, helped her with paperwork, and understood her as she navigated her entry into the industry. Eventually, Martin joined the Citywide Asphalt Group’s Laverton and North Melbourne teams as an asphalt plant crew member.

“They helped me with the English barrier and provided all this support that made me feel very confident,” Martin said.

“They helped me with the onboarding process, documentation and finding a position at Citywide, where my fascination with the asphalt industry started.

“I started to have fun at work and see that there are places that respect you even when you’re from another country and don’t speak the language that well. They were patient with me and taught me what they knew.

“The reason why I am so fascinated with it is there is teamwork every day, and it’s like a second family. I don’t have a family living here in Australia, and these people support me a lot and make me feel comfortable every day.”

Martin said Amarapave and Citywide Asphalt Group had been critical in helping breakthrough into the industry and pursue their dream career.

“They gave me the support I needed at the stage, and they provided everything I needed like PPE and boots, and the feeling you get from these little things is a good feeling.”

“In this industry, I see a lot of career progression and opportunities. You’re recognised for what you do and there’s always people here to support you. It is very nice, I feel like a belong here,” Martin said.

Martin has positively impacted since joining Citywide Asphalt Group at its Laverton and North Melbourne sites. Citywide Asphalt Group general manager Sam Allan said including people from diverse backgrounds only enhanced the workplace.

We interviewed multiple people from many different avenues and Fran was the successful applicant.

“Fran really proved to be a great cultural fit for our business and a great contributor to our organisation.”

“It was something that Ash and I talked about a lot. Through a lot of conversations, we decided to start Amarapave and advocate for more opportunity in the industry for women and non-binary people and other minority backgrounds.”

the steels perform when exposed to acidic, low-pH environments,” SSAB regional sales manager for Western Australia Graham McClelland said.

“If corrosion is present, Hardox HiAce can increase service life by two to three times compared to a 450 HBW steel, depending on the abrasive materials and the acidic conditions.”

The Hardox HiAce’s ability to combat corrosive wear has made it a natural choice for customers working in corrosive environments from quarries to mine sites.

In one case, a customer engaged SSAB to see how it could extend the service life of its reclaimer buckets for wheel excavators.

The customer was a larger producer with global customers and needed a solution which could help its buckets remain productive for longer.

SSAB suggested designing and manufacturing new reclaimer buckets using the Hardox HiAce steel grade to strengthen key areas. The HiAce was used for the bucket’s floor and sides exposed to corrosive materials.

The new reclaimer buckets’ initial results have been promising. Based on their operating conditions, the producer expects to get twice the service life compared to its previous buckets.

“Corrosive wear is caused by oxidation of the steel’s surface. The oxidation process

reduces the hardness of the surface, resulting in an accelerated wear rate “This leads to higher repair costs and a shorter service life than expected – which, of course, can negatively impact productivity and profitability.”

SSAB believes customers in many Australian heavy industries, including quarrying, can benefit from investing in the correct steel grades for their applications,” McClelland said.

The cost of corrosion and abrasion can often be understated in these industries.

Businesses will often see the impact of these factors on their bottom line, with higher repair costs, shorter service lives, and greater maintenance costs.

“In quarrying, there are a lot of areas with abrasive and corrosive wear,” McClelland said.

“Especially in Australia, where the conditions lend themselves to harsh operating environments. The corrosion rate is increased with temperature and humidity, so in a country such as Australia, there is a high risk for corrosion problems.

Some companies also use this approach to assess environmental and reputational risk (to name but a few). But it got me to thinking as to why it doesn’t also include quarry resource risk?

R

RESOURCE RISK When you look at a quarry resource, you can risk-assess it. Though probably a new idea, it makes sense. For example, if you have a large, consistent resource with a low stripping ratio and stable faces, it’s likely that your risk is low and, beyond ensuring that you are extracting within your boundaries, there is not that much to go wrong.

At the other extreme, if you had a resource that had unexpected pockets of low-quality material in it, variable stripping requirements and severe geotechnical issues, there is a lot that can go wrong, and you would assess the risk as very high.

isk management is a critical part of the management of any quarry business.

It manifests itself in many ways. We take specific note of this subject in regard to safety considerations, where the ability to identify potential safety hazards, assess the risk of them and put in place appropriate controls to manage (and if possible) eliminate the risk entirely is a critical and nonnegotiable function in any business.

Likewise, we also ensure that the people we have running quarries are competent to do so and, particularly, understand how to identify and manage risk.

Most companies have in place well defined systems to manage financial risk – budgets, purchase requests and capital expenditure processes to name but a few are examples of these types of systems.

RESOURCE RISK REDUCTION So how do you reduce resource risk?

In the first instance, you should do a risk assessment of your resource and list out all

the different ways that your resource could cause you safety and business risk. Some of the risks to consider: • Low or variable material quality • Majors slips and wall failures • Loss of ability to supply key customers • Loss of access to an area required later • Digging outside extraction limits • Extracting through protected vegetation • Breaching a depth limit • Unexpected overburden removal requirements • Lack of geological logging standards • Lack of quarry designs standards • Quarry planning in someone’s head and not on paper • Prior technical work not available for planning • Technical work conducted by people not qualified to do it • Managers within the business not sufficiently trained to understand resource risk This list is not exhaustive and like any risk assessment, should be conducted relevant to your site and operations. identified, you would look at the likelihood of them happening and the consequences to determine what should be done.

THE COST OF NOT DOING IT No one ever said, “money’s no object” to understanding a quarry resource. In fact, quite the opposite.

Oscar Wilde famously wrote, “nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.” Perhaps he was having a bad day, but on reflection, he has a point.

Our long-held view is that determining whether to spend money on things like geology, geotechnical and quarry engineering should be assessed based on the risk of what would happen if the risk manifested, rather than the cost of performing the work that would prevent it from occurring.

This said, to take this approach, you would first have to have a clear idea of what the risks are, how they could be controlled and what it would cost to do so. One of the key issues we see is that in many instances, decision

makers across the industry don’t have sufficient understanding of resource issues (or the cost of them going wrong) to make effective decisions.

If you don’t know what the potential risks are, it is very hard to identify them, let alone control them.

Because the potential risks are not understood (or risk assessed), then when something does go wrong (e.g. can’t supply a critical customer, unexpected stripping campaign required, a pit wall falls down etc.) these are often not treated with the same

level of rigour of investigation as would be occur if someone had been injured. In saying this, I am not trying to equate the two, other than to suggest that issues like those noted above should be investigated thoroughly to get to the bottom of why they occurred – if you don’t then you won’t be able to prevent them in the future either.

EXAMPLES Let’s look at some examples of what can occur when quarry resource risk is not assessed and managed appropriately.

A site with variable geology was struggling to determine a direction to expand into.

Stripping was conducted that didn’t yield the material expected and was a waste of money.

The site was struggling to find the amount of quality rock that was needed – a geological review was conducted that found that the area that the site was stripping was proven to be unviable at least twenty years previously – yet the manager in charge was unaware of the data and didn’t think to conduct a Competent engineers, geologists and surveyors come at a cost, but add real value.

A company had for many years had all their geological and mining engineering work conducted by a trusted external one-manband consultant. At a critical juncture, the consultant became ill and was no longer available to the business. This left the business highly exposed and required an external party to be brought in.

A corporate mandate was passed down that required all documents (other than those legally required to be held) older than five years to be destroyed. This included all the geological, geotechnical and quarry engineering documents relating to the site.

This resulted in the loss of critical information related to the management of the resource.

A site with variable geology decided to conduct a diamond drilling campaign. The holes were drilled, but for “cost reasons”, never logged. The diamond core was taking up space in a shed and so was dumped.

lost. The area had to be re-drilled (holes in similar positions to the previous time) and then logged (to Australian standards) and the data modelled to provide a clear understanding of the geology of the area.

An inner-city quarry was nearing the end of its life (or so it thought). A review was conducted of the survey, geology, geotechnical and quarry engineering data available which found that the site actually had some ten years of additional resources that they didn’t know about.

WOULD YOU HIRE A QUARRY MANAGER WHO WAS NOT QUALIFIED? Dumb question, right? So why wouldn’t the same standards be applied to those conducting survey, geological, geotechnical and quarry engineering services for your site? Yes, a draftsperson or geologist could potentially design a quarry pit, but only an engineer is qualified to do so.

Likewise, anyone qualified can fly a drone, but that doesn’t make them a registered surveyor that can competently sign off on stock volumes or ensure that you are operating within your extraction boundaries.

If you want to improve your resource risk management, make sure that whoever you choose can explain the risk to you in terms that you can understand (a good professional can always do this, no matter how complicated the problem), is a qualified geologist or

mining engineer and in some states that the engineer is a registered professional engineer. Also make sure that they provide clear recommendations about what needs to be done, noting that recommendations contain actions to be done (or things to not be done).

Realise also that these competent people come at a cost. The quarry industry competes with the mining industry for surveyors, geologists and engineers. Unless we do more as an industry to attract, train and retain our own resource professionals, this will continue to become a worsening problem.

Lastly, ensure that the resource technical work is made available to decision makers – there are some great ways of doing this with online software such as Strayos, Central, or Deswik.MDM.

SUMMARY Make sure you understand your resource risk and the cost of getting it wrong. As appropriate, hire qualified people to help you mitigate or eliminate that risk. Ensure that the data they provide is made available to decision makers in the business and is retained for the future. ew people in the quarrying industry can claim to have spent nearly a decade as a line cook; however, Matthew Ferguson’s journey into quarrying is unlike most others.

After seven years in hospitality and a stint in civil labouring, he has found his labour of love after eight years at Multotec Australia. Here, as the business development manager for quarries and aggregates in Australasia, he is responsible for the company’s push into the Australian quarrying sector.

Ferguson started on the factory floor working in the rubber compression manufacturing area and has no hesitation about pursuing a career with the company.

“I ended up becoming the supervisor of that area of rubber manufacturing, and at the end of 2018, I had the option to consider two positions: the quality control officer role and the sales technician position in

the aggregates industry that was offered to me,” he told Quarry.

“I had a sit down with the managing director, and we had a nice, candid chat about what the future looked like for both roles, and I ended up deciding on the sales role.

“It was an interesting change. I’ve always found it quite easy to talk to people. I used to speak to 100 people a day in hospitality, so I didn’t have any issue talking to people, but it was quite a big shift from what I had been doing.

“I found that the screen media and the business side of things came fairly naturally to me, and Multotec allowed me to explore that, and I’ve enjoyed it.”

Ferguson attributes his knowledge to spending time with Multotec’s product team and then a three-year stint with the Multotec engineering team, which showed him how screen media worked in a quarry.

This experience helped him understand both sides of the coin in terms of what manufacturers are looking for in their screen media and what customers need from suppliers like Multotec.

“I am constantly asking questions about why things work and trying to learn about the engineering of screen media and panels.

It’s never boring and never the same day twice,” he said.

“We’ve constantly grown in the years that I’ve been here, and we’re always innovating and making something new, which keeps it interesting.”

This undercurrent of demand and the requirement for construction materials make Australia an attractive market for global material producers and manufacturers like Multotec.

“Quarries and aggregates are key to that infrastructure spending and it means they aren’t going to face the peaks and troughs as much compared to the global commodity market,” he said.

“We know that the market has a growth potential for us, and my position was created to help guide that. I’ll be able to use my

knowledge of the inner workings of the business and my knowledge of the quarry and aggregates market and work with our existing sales team to push that value out into the market.

MARVEL AT THE METRICS Metso’s metrics are helping quarries reduce unplanned downtime, improve productivity and optimise performance.

echnology is enabling quarry managers to view data in real-time, allowing them to make informed decisions to enhance business operations.

These data can come in many forms, from metrics to maintenance tools. Original equipment manufacturers (OEM), including the likes of Metso, provide fit-for-purpose tools to support key quarry functions like crusher maintenance, aggregates production and screen performance.

Metso business development manager John O’Reilly and Metso product manager for HP Cones Ilkka Somero spoke to Quarry about the company’s range of metrics and digital tools to support construction material producers.

CRUSHER COLLECTION At the heart of any quarry is its crusher. The quarry’s production levels are defined by its crusher’s performance, and without crushing at optimal levels, project deadlines suffer.

That is why Metso created a suite of digital tools to track crusher maintenance so that maintenance could be carried out safely without inhibiting production.

“Safety is a key factor within our business today and a top priority for us. It is important to find new ways that enable employees to work in a safer zone all the time. Our maintenance platform for jaw crushers is a good example. This equipment improves working conditions and safety,” Somero said.

“Before the launch of the maintenance platforms for the Metso Nordberg C Series jaw crushers, for example, no industrial and commercial solution was available. And the practices in the field varied a lot: some of them were difficult for the maintenance crew and some were not safe. So, there was a clear demand for a professional solution.

“Our approach in the development of the maintenance platforms was to combine safety and ease of use. And I can truly say that we succeeded well.”

The maintenance platform for the Metso Nordberg C Series jaw crushers is available in both one-piece and two-piece jaw die configurations. The platform fits into the crusher cavity and supports the jaw dies in

place, ensuring that they cannot drop. It is designed to be easy to adjust and lightweight, allowing just one person to lift them using the equipped handrails, which reduces the time spent within the crusher cavity.

“Many customers in the mining and aggregate industries have identified working in the jaw crusher cavity as a potential safety concern,” Somero said.

“Every now and then, the people doing service and maintenance on the jaw crusher must enter the jaw crusher cavity. How often that happens depends on many things, such as the abrasiveness of the rock or ore to be processed by the crusher. The reality is that the need to enter the crusher cavity cannot be avoided.

“The maintenance platform is a small investment that significantly improves safety and ergonomics.”

METRICS MONITORED Two of Metso’s most popular metrics platforms are for aggregate production and screen monitoring.

Metso has helped customers use screen monitoring metrics to increase uptime and reduce spare parts and screen media consumption. These savings have flowon effects across the business, including improved safety due to less unplanned maintenance and higher throughput rates, and the screen’s performance is optimised.

“Think of metrics for screen monitoring as a 24–7 guardian for the screen: it’s integral to

reducing unplanned downtime and extending its lifespan. More importantly, it optimises screen performance to help perfect your overall process,” O’Reilly said.

Metso’s metrics monitoring provides a real-time analysis of the vibrating screen’s performance and bearing conditions. If the system detects an issue, it will alert the operators, controllers, and service professionals so they can perform the required maintenance.

Employees can also use this information when planning future maintenance breaks, as knowledge about past events like broken springs, incorrect run speed, or structural support can identify issues before they become a major expense.

“By collecting data in real-time, it is possible to get access to fault-finding recommendations and be able to quickly analyse trends,” O’Reilly said.

“This makes it easy to try different parameter settings in order to optimise the process according to your current conditions and targets. It will also have a positive effect on sustainability as optimally running the screen enables increased uptime and less consumption of media and spare parts. Using fewer parts translates to less waste ending up in a landfill.”

O’Reilly said Metso’s team would be able to train any quarry professional on how to use the screen media monitoring system for their business.

“Metrics for screens is designed for intuitive operation. An easy-to-read screen dashboard with OEM insights makes it possible to detect issues quickly. The integrated system delivers complete diagnostics, alarms, and history at a glance,” he said. “Modular sensors are wireless, self-powered, and easy to use. These metrics platforms are accessible through a single portal for ease of use.

Having access to this real-time data reduces the trouble-shooting process, which means increased uptime.

“High crusher availability is crucial in aggregate production. In the past, dealing with equipment breakdowns meant sending someone to the site to collect more information. This was time-consuming, created production delays, and increased your indirect costs,” O’Reilly said.

“The management system we had in place at Komatsu did already adhere to the principles of the Standards, because we genuinely do have a big focus on safety and environmental protection, but to actually achieve the certification is a big task,” Jukes said.

“We appointed a national HSSE assurance and systems manager to oversee the process; the organisation made a real

commitment to doing this. We did a gap analysis first then we reviewed all our policies, our procedures and went through a process of updating 180 or so procedures to align them to legislation, align them to state requirements, and then also align them to best practice, most importantly.

“We have very few environmental incidents but there’s a lot of new initiatives that we’re

starting from a sustainability perspective, especially around waste, because of this very rigorous management system.”

Helen Goudy oversaw the process as national HSSE Assurance and systems manager. She said the certification was the result of collaboration across the business.

“The audit process was incredibly thorough, with assessors closely examining our procedures, risk assessments and employee engagement in initiatives. We had the option just to go for head office certification, but we didn’t do that. We wanted certification for all of our branches,” Goudy said.

“The feedback from the audit confirmed that our systems not only meet but exceed the standard requirements. A new bucket has slashed downtime and improved productivity at a key Victorian quarry thanks to its unique design.

P

roducing superior stone with superior service is the goal of Lima South Quarry Group.

The company’s hornsfel blue metal aggregates from its Lima South Quarry are highly sought after, particularly for rail ballast, concrete aggregates, asphalt, and sealing applications.

This has made it popular with state and local governments for road construction and maintenance, as well as private construction companies that build roads on their behalf.

To ensure it can supply these key customers, the quarry produces a wide range of high-quality products year-round.

Lima South quarry manager Jeremy Vegter said production rate is one of the key concerns at the site.

He told Quarry that in late 2024, the Victorian quarry wanted a replacement for their excavator bucket because it was not keeping up with the necessary productivity.

“Our old 3.5m³ bucket was very standard,” he said. “We were seeing a lot of wear, especially with the ground engagement tools that were not meeting our expectations.”

Lima South Quarry began searching for an alternative that would maximise productivity at the site and that was wear-resistant enough to avoid downtime. That’s when the team learned about the ONTRAC Group’s XMOR BHC80 high production bucket.

Manufactured with SSAB’s Hardox 500 Tuf wear plates and Strenx structural steel in its durable design, the bucket was tough enough for the job.

What set it apart from the other options was its unique shape. The XMOR bucket features a keel (tub) design that reduces weight and enables more structural stability. The inverted shape of the keel helps minimise ground contact and wear on the bottom of the bucket, which reduces wear. The bucket was the perfect solution for the Victorian quarry

because it effectively exchanged weight for payload without sacrificing durability or structural integrity.

Vegter said ONTRAC Group did a study to help determine how much value the XMOR could bring.

“They worked out that there would roughly be an extra three tonnes moved with each swing of the bucket,” he said.

“When compared with the current bucket, it would fill a truck in around eight to nine passes. With the XMOR, it could do it in four, sometimes five.

“If we were running the same number of trucks for a 10-hour shift, the tonnes per hour (tph) of the current bucket was 700tph while the XMOR was able to do just over 1000tph.”

The Lima South Quarry took delivery of the new bucket in November 2024 and immediately began to see results. The enhanced payload capacity from the XMOR was 45 per cent greater than the previous bucket.

The XMOR bucket is manufactured with SSAB’s Hardox 500 Tuf wear plates and Strenx structural steel.

This had a flow-on effect throughout the quarry, as certain jobs could be run with one less haul truck. It also cut down on the amount of overtime, as the load and haul team could move the same amount of material in eight hours instead of 12.

Vegter said the team has time for other jobs around the quarry that previously were not possible.

“The number of trucks per hour has gone from 18 to 25, and the time each truck takes to fill has gone down from three minutes and twenty seconds to one minute and forty-five seconds,” he said.

“The operators took some time to get used to the new bucket. The curved edge takes a bit to get used to if you’ve been using a standard bucket your whole life, but once you’re used to it, there’s no difference.”

ONTRAC SUPPORT One of the other key considerations for Lima South Quarry was aftersales support. It was vital that the quarry team could pick up the phone and speak to the original equipment manufacturer, especially for spare parts.

Vegter said it meant the quarry’s workshop isn’t tied up trying to fix a bucket, especially because they have other breakdowns and tasks to attend to.

“The cost of bucket repairs is made worse by needing to find a replacement while the bucket is being repaired,” he said.

While it’s still early, the XMOR bucket is 700 hours in and showing minimal signs of wear.

During the purchasing process, ONTRAC’s team worked closely with the quarry.

“ONTRAC has visited the site twice and is always calling, bringing in anything we need.

It’s been great,” Vegter said.

“We’ve had no dramas with it, and ONTRAC has been on

Kinder’s emergency switches are keeping staff and equipment safe around conveyors.

onveyor belts are designed to move material from one place to another.

However, problems may arise if foreign material falls onto the belt, or an operator is unfortunate enough to get caught in the belt. Sharp and heavy objects landing on the belt can cause tremendous damage to the conveyor and nearby equipment.

Worse still, it poses a risk to staff that are in close proximity. That’s why Kinder Australia offers the ZS 80 and ZS 92 emergency pullwire switches, which guarantee a reliable emergency stop function on large machines.

Kinder Australia’s design engineer David Zhungu said that in environments like quarries, simple and robust safety equipment is key.

“Part of that is making sure they have safety equipment that can stand up to the extreme conditions of a quarry.”

Specifically developed for Australian conditions, the switchgear series is suitable for use in quarries, open-cast mining, gravel plants, sand pits, and other heavy industrial applications.

The switches are manufactured from either tough thermoplastic or aluminium diecast enclosures to withstand falling debris. This protection is important as it prevents false trips, which increases production costs due to downtime.

A combination of rubber lining on the ZS 92 switches, and watertight collars on the ZS 80 switches ensures a barrier against

dust and water ingress. This high IP67 rating is critical for switches as water causes short circuits and corrosion of electrical contacts.

Zhungu said Kinder offers a wide variety of safety switches because there is no “onesize-fits-all” solution.

“Some quarries may want a different enclosure based on the conditions onsite, others may want additional safety features on the switch like push buttons,” he said.

“Kinder maintains a good relationship with our supplier so that we can accommodate these needs.”

New mechanisms within the switch allow a wire length of up to 75m whilst maintaining the maximum pull force of 70N required to activate the emergency stop function.

This makes the safety switch easier to operate and reliably meets all relevant Australian and International Standards.

Zhungu, who has an electrical background, said Kinder has collaborated with their supplier to incorporate feedback from customers and include customised solutions.

“Customers like how simple the design is. It is a compact switch that fulfils the customer’s requirements,” he said.

“The simple design also means there is less training needed, it’s easier to mount, and there is nothing complex that would disrupt its operation. This is also aided by detailed installation instructions, which are critical in ensuring correct tensioning and wiring of Pull-wire switches.

“Most applications have some space restrictions when it comes to mounting a switch, so a compact solution is important.”

onveyor belts are vital assets in quarrying operations in Australia.

They are responsible for efficiently transporting rock, sand, gravel, and more from one location to another.

These systems play a critical role in meeting production targets and ensuring efficient material handling.

Like any mechanical system, conveyor belts require regular maintenance and inspections to function. Without proper upkeep of the conveyor belt, structures and accessories, conveyor belt systems can, at best, experience significant wear and tear, leading to costly repairs, and at worst, lead to unscheduled downtime, which can cause days of operational delays, leading to lost productivity and increased expenses.

Sites often use conveyor belt accessories, including belt cleaners, sealing and support systems, belt tracking, and flow aids, to improve safety, enhance efficiency, and maintain compliance with environmental regulations.

These products and solutions also extend the life of conveyor parts and the belt.

However, inspection and service of these products during planned maintenance periods or conveyor shutdowns are often overlooked.

ohn Deere has revealed new features that will enhance its articulated dump trucks (ADTs) as well as its digital customer experience for customers.

New features within the John Deere Command Center will enable users to access comprehensive job site data and machine health information. Customer feedback has influenced the changes to the digital platform to ensure John Deere customers can access the data they need in their daily operations.

Costello said the new system meant the operator would have improved spatial awareness with wider views, auto panning views with articulation, and enhanced clarity of the jobsite.

QUEENSLAND CHASES OLYMPIC PROJECTS Stakeholders in the construction materials industry have supported the Queensland Government’s latest delivery plan for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

T

he Queensland Government’s $7.1 billion funding envelope for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games is expected to have an influence on the construction materials sector.

The Queensland Government, led by Premier David Crisafulli, unveiled a series of new and upgraded venues that would be funded as part of the runway to the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane.

“Transport, infrastructure, tourism and grassroots sport will all be part of the lasting legacy for a Games we can all be proud of,” Crisafulli said.

The spending will result in a suite of infrastructure being developed across South East Queensland, including a new Brisbane stadium that will ultimately replace the Gabba, a new national aquatic centre, and an athletes’ village. The Queensland Government has also pledged to upgrade the Queensland Tennis Centre and the Chandler Sporting Precinct, along with the surrounding transport network.

Several key road networks, including the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns and the Cairns Western Arterial Road, are set for state government funding to ensure upgrades arrive in time for the global sporting showcase. Queensland’s announcement followed the Federal Government’s announcement of $7.2 billion to upgrade and fix the Bruce Highway and bring it in line with a minimum three-star safety rating.

“This historic investment answers the call of Queenslanders to bring the Bruce up to a three-star safety rating so Australians stop losing their loved ones on this road,” Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King said The 2032 Delivery Plan also revealed spending for regional Queensland cities, with Cairns’ Barlow Park and Toowoomba’s showgrounds set to be upgraded alongside additional rowing infrastructure on the Fitzroy River.

“The Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have been consulted and are aligned that this is the right plan, and it’s time to get moving,” Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee president Andrew Liveris said.

“We will move swiftly to make operational assessments and to align our venue master plan and sports program, ready for endorsement from the IOC, International Paralympic Committee and International Sport Federations.

“We have been handed a gift to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032 – an event that will attract billions of viewers, millions of visitors, deliver generational economic and social benefits, and secure legacies for grassroots communities through to elite athletes.”

The CCAA’s members produce a large amount of Australia’s cement, concrete, and aggregates, all materials required to deliver Queensland’s new delivery plan.

CCAA chief executive officer Michael Kilgariff welcomed the plan but said it would require a secure supply of construction materials.

“That’s a once-in-a-generation construction load. But with many quarries at their regulated limits, and new quarries likely needed before 2032 just to meet Olympicrelated demand, Queensland’s supply chain is already under serious strain,” he said.

“To ensure this infrastructure program is affordable, sustainable, and deliverable, Queensland must urgently secure the building blocks [including] aggregates, cement and concrete through a coordinated supply strategy.

The CCAA’s top wishlist includes faster and more consistent quarry approvals and reduced operational restrictions for quarries.

In theory, this could involve lifting or streamlining output caps and operating restrictions and transferring responsibility for major quarry development assessments from local governments to the state government, particularly for those in key resource areas (KRAs).

The CCAA has recommended that KRAs be better protected from urban encroachment and that infrastructure spending be calibrated with a region’s actual material supply capacity.

“We support the government’s objective to lift productivity, but the disconnect between state planning policies and local development approvals is dragging projects down,” Kilgariff said.

“We’ve seen quarry proposals delayed or denied for years in areas already identified as key resource areas. The sovereign risk is real.

“We welcome the opportunity to continue working with the Government to deliver this plan and to ensure a successful (Olympic and Paralympic) Games built on solid, local foundations.” •

ROMAN DISCOVERY IN LONDON

The discovery was made in London earlier this year.

Researchers in London have uncovered the startling find of a Roman-styled Basilica in England’s most populous city.

A

commercial building next to Leadenhall Market in the City of London does not immediately come to mind as the site of a Roman Basilica, yet researchers have uncovered just that.

Hertshten Properties contacted the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) to investigate its site at 85 Gracechurch St, London, ahead of a planned redevelopment.

Previous research had uncovered that at some point, the site had been home to London’s first Roman Basilica, but no one knew if the site, or even a tiny part of it, had survived to the present day.

According to MOLA, researchers had assumed that modern construction and the passage of time made preserving the Roman Basilica unlikely. The archeologists dug several test pits to uncover the Basilica’s foundations and walls and were rewarded with significant parts of the Basilica still intact.

The search revealed foundations and walls constructed from flint, ragstone, and

Roman tile. Researchers estimate that these are over ten metres long, one metre wide, and four metres deep in some areas.

Also known as Kentish Ragstone, ragstone was widely used in London buildings, especially during Roman and Medieval times. It was commonly used in the South East of England and was primarily quarried in Kent.

“This is one of the most significant discoveries made in the city in recent years.

It’s like discovering the Speaker’s Chair and chamber of the House of Commons 2,000 years into the future. The levels of preservation of the Basilica have far exceeded our expectations, and we have possibly the most important part of the building,” MOLA director of development Sophie Jackson said.

“Excitingly, we’ve only just scratched the surface of this site’s potential through our initial investigations. We look forward to discovering more about these remains, working with the site owners, London

Museum, and City of London Corporation to develop a truly unique and captivating archaeological experience and public space.”

At this stage, the researchers believe the discovery would have been the tribunal area of the Basilica. In this area, magistrates and political leaders would have made decisions to shape Roman London more than 2000 years ago.

Following the discovery, Hertshten Properties revised its redevelopment plans to integrate the Basilica remains into its project to redevelop 85 Gracechurch St, London.

“The Roman Basilica will be incorporated as a world-class public experience through updates to the proposed design of the development, right in its original location,” Hershten Properties chief executive officer Ron Hertshten told CNN. MOLA is working with the site owners and the redevelopment project team, including Shaw Corporation, Gardiner and Theobold, and Woods Bagot architects, to develop a new public exhibition and event space in partnership with the London Museum around the discovery. •
