PROJECT WATCH

Where the work is F rom the banks of the Murray River to southern Tasmania, pump infrastructure projects are actively under construction right across the country. In the next instalment of ‘Project Watch’, Pump Industry outlines several notable projects the pump sector should be across.

Image: kwest/shutterstock.com

Geeveston sewage upgrade TasWater’s $13 million Geeveston sewage upgrade project is delivering critical infrastructure improvements to support better environmental outcomes for the region in the south of Tasmania. The project includes the relocation of the marine outfall from the shallow waters of the Kermandie River to deeper waters in the Huon River where optimal dilution and dispersion of the treated euent can occur. A new sewage pump station and 79-kilolitre emergency storage tank will also help reduce the frequency and volume of overows, with a new 4.3km pipeline along the Huon Highway set to connect the Geeveston sewage treatment plant to the outfall o Shipwrights Point. Design for the new pipeline is complete, with major construction planned to begin by September 2026. Together, these upgrades will strengthen the reliability and performance of Geeveston’s sewerage network.

Barham, on the banks of the Murray River, is undergoing a sewer pump station upgrade.

Pump Industry | Spring 2026 | Issue 57

Henley Beach wastewater upgrade SA Water is upgrading wastewater infrastructure at Henley Beach to meet projected demand beyond 2030. The Cudmore Terrace wastewater pump station services around 10,000 connections but has deteriorated and requires additional capacity. The project includes replacement of approximately 425m of wastewater main and rehabilitation of the pump station to increase pumping capacity and improve reliability. Pipeline construction is continuing through September and October 2026, with work on the pump station scheduled to begin in late 2026. The overall project is expected to be completed in 2027.

Barham sewer pump station upgrade Murray River Council is replacing Barham’s main sewer pump station to improve the reliability and safety of the town’s wastewater network. Sewer pump station 3 currently uses a dry and wet well arrangement that no longer meets modern safety and maintenance standards. The project will replace the existing facility with a modern wet well system, improving maintenance access while renewing ageing infrastructure. Construction commenced in July 2026 and is expected to take approximately four to ve months to complete. Mordialloc sewer upgrade Melbourne Water is progressing the second stage of its Mordialloc sewer rehabilitation project to improve the reliability of Melbourne’s sewerage network. Following rehabilitation of the Mordialloc main sewer, stage two is focused on upgrading the Mordialloc rising main along Chute Street. Works are scheduled to begin from mid-2026 and include upgrades at the existing pump station in Bear Street. The project forms part of Melbourne Water’s ongoing work to renew ageing sewer infrastructure while ensuring the network can continue meeting the needs of Melbourne’s growing population. Morayeld wastewater upgrade Unitywater is upgrading wastewater infrastructure in Morayeld to improve network reliability and support future population growth. Stage 1 includes around 3km of new pipeline and major upgrades to two existing wastewater pump stations on Coach Road West and Buchanan Road. Construction commenced in January 2026. Stage 2 involves upgrading a further 3km of existing wastewater infrastructure, with early works beginning in June and construction commencing in August. The project is expected to be completed around mid-2027, subject to weather and site conditions.

MINING SOLUTIONS

Keeping mines moving SEEPEX engineers pumping solutions for Australia’s abrasive, demanding and remote mining conditions.

F

rom iron ore in the Pilbara, gold in the Goldelds to coal in the Bowen Basin and lithium throughout WA, Australia’s wealth of commodities has made it a hotbed for mining innovation. Within this, mining operators all share the same priority: keeping essential processes running while managing water, tailings, reagents, abrasive slurries, maintenance windows and long supply chains. Pump selection is not a narrow equipment decision. It aects availability, safety, maintenance planning and lifecycle cost, with pumps needing to cope with variable solids content, changing pressures, corrosive water, abrasive tailings and remote mine-site service requirements. SEEPEX progressive cavity pump technology addresses these realities through constant, pulse-free ow, accurate dosing, solids handling, shear-sensitive media transfer and maintenance concepts designed to reduce downtime. This is backed by SEEPEX Australia’s local footprint, helping mine sites

8

receive rapid service support and equipment delivery no matter their location. Pumps are built at SEEPEX Australia’s workshop in Tuggerah on New South Wales’ Central Coast, which also provides local stockholding and the engineering expertise needed to answer pressing technical questions. “Mining customers need more than a pump. They need an engineered solution that can handle abrasive and viscous media while supporting uptime over the full lifecycle,” SEEPEX global business development manager – mining Magaly Levray said. “SEEPEX combines global application experience with local execution, which is essential in Australia – a country exposed to some of the world’s harshest mining conditions.” Mining pump applications rarely remain static. Slurry solids vary, pressures change, mine depth increases dewatering demands, tailings strategies evolve, and reagent dosing must remain stable as plant conditions shift.

Progressive cavity pumps provide a practical answer to these challenges because they move media through dened cavities, with output adjusted by pump speed. SEEPEX solutions are used in thickener underow, tailings transfer, lime milk pumping, occulant dosing, chemical metering, shotcrete and explosive emulsion transfer. The common engineering theme is control: maintaining ow and dosing accuracy even when the medium is abrasive, viscous, corrosive or solids-laden.

Keeping the water out Mine dewatering is another key application, where the need to maintain safe access, protect equipment and sustain production is paramount. In underground mines, groundwater seepage, drilling slimes and sump contents often must be transferred from reception points at dierent levels, while working within space, power and access constraints. Designed for corrosive mine water and solids-laden slurries, SEEPEX

BN pumps can deliver pressures of up to 48 bar without staging pumps. Their progressive cavity design handles abrasive media with low wear and eliminates the need for gland water, helping mines reduce complexity, water consumption and operating costs. “In Australian mining operations, the application is only half the story. Access, distance and response time are equally important,” SEEPEX Australia sales engineer – business development Patrick Yeoh said. “Our role is to help customers select the right pump and support it locally throughout its operating life.”

Tailings, underow and recovery Australian mine sites are increasingly focused on water recovery, process eciency and storage risk to ensure their environmental compliance. Thickeners must work hand in hand with underow pumps to maintain the balance between water recovery and waste movement, handling dense, abrasive media in the process.

SEEPEX pumps can convey slurries at ow rates up to 350m³/h, pressures up to 48 bar, and solids content up to 80 per cent, making them a go-to solution for tailings management applications. The smooth ow of SEEPEX pumps helps avoid disturbances on sensors and removes the need for pulsation dampeners in relevant applications. When viscosity, solids content or pressure changes, operators can respond by adjusting the speed. For procurement teams, the value lies not only in pump performance, but in reduced system complexity and easier maintenance planning.

Lime, occulant and chemical dosing With process-plant reliability depending on accurate and repeatable dosing, SEEPEX pumps convey media through xed-shape cavities. Lime milk duties can reach ow rates up to 350m³/h and pressures up to 96 bar, with benets including reversible ow, self-priming performance, no seal water requirement and the ability to pass large particles.

Flocculants require a dierent engineering approach. Their long molecular chains are shear-sensitive and must be preserved to support eective settling. SEEPEX pumps gently transfer occulants, helping protect polymer integrity while maintaining dosing accuracy and repeatability. Smart Conveying Technology (SCT), which extends stator life by 200 per cent, enables access to wear parts without disconnecting suction or discharge pipework. Chemical dosing is important in otation, leaching, acid wash and elution circuits, where reagents such as xanthates, caustic soda, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and sodium cyanide require precise, pulse-free dosing. SEEPEX MD and BN pumps support these duties through accurate metering and material selection matched to chemical service.

shotcrete with pulse-free ow, highpressure output, accurate dosing and robust operation. The new SEEPEX Smart Joint Access (SJA) pump adds a targeted solution for inspection-intensive applications. SJA, which features a large inspection opening in the suction housing for quick access to joint checks, is particularly relevant for shotcrete applications and explosive emulsion transfer into boreholes. SJA pumps cover ow rates from 1–30m³/h and pressures up to 24

bar. The equal wall stator supports high-pressure capability in a compact footprint, while hydraulic and electric drive options allow installation on truckmounted mobile units, skid-mounted systems and factory setups. For Australian mine sites seeking standardised mobile or skid-mounted systems, SEEPEX can support fast delivery, enabling eet-wide rollouts with minimal downtime. “Smart Joint Access was developed for applications where inspection readiness, compact design and

Maintenance designed around uptime Maintenance performance can determine whether a pump remains an asset or becomes a bottleneck. SEEPEX Maintain in Place features, Drive Joint Access, Rotor Joint Access and SCT are designed to reduce maintenance time and improve access to wear parts. SCT can reduce rotor and stator replacement time by up to 85 per cent, while its adjustable stator design compensates for wear and can more than double rotor and stator life. For heavy-duty applications such as lime milk, shotcrete, underow recovery and dewatering, SEEPEX BNM pumps provide direct access to the rotor-side joint, rotor, and drive-side joint. The rotor, stator and mechanical seal can be replaced without removing the suction casing or pipeline branches, supporting faster interventions during shutdowns. “Remote mine sites need equipment that can be maintained eciently and supported quickly,” a SEEPEX customer service technician said. “Local spare parts, practical access to wear components and technicians who understand site conditions all help reduce the time between a problem being identied and the pump returning to service.” A local partner for all operational needs SEEPEX Australia supports mine sites across the pump lifecycle, providing expertise in pump selection, commissioning support, spare parts planning, service agreements and maintenance advice. “We support customers at both ends of the spectrum: engineered project work for new installations and the day-to-day business that keeps existing pumps operating. In mining, both are essential,” Yeoh said. For Australian mining operations – whether in the Pilbara, Kalgoorlie, or Bowen Basin – SEEPEX oers local execution backed by global expertise. The company is deeply embedded in Australia, ensuring solutions are not just taken o the shelf. Learn more at seepex.com

Deep mine dewatering In demanding mining environments, the pump system must do more than move water.

M

ine dewatering is often described as a simple utility function. In practice, experienced mining engineers know that it is much more than that. Water can determine whether a working area remains accessible, whether excavation can continue safely, and whether equipment can operate without unnecessary interruption. As an underground mine advances deeper, the dewatering duty does not remain static. Head increases, pressure requirements change, water quality can deteriorate, and suspended solids can turn a simple water-transfer application into a demanding pumping duty. This is where the design philosophy behind the Roto Mining Station becomes particularly relevant. Developed from Roto Pumps’ long-standing experience in mining applications, the Mining Station

12

Pump Industry | Spring 2026 | Issue 57

Roto Pumps is a recognised name in the development of pump solutions for mining and explosives applications.

combines a heavy-duty progressive cavity pump system with a skidmounted, integrated arrangement designed specically around the realities of mine dewatering. With more than ve decades of experience developing pump solutions for the mining and explosives industries, Roto’s principle for the Mining Station is straightforward: rather than treating the pump as an isolated piece of equipment, the Mining Station approaches dewatering as a complete system.

The realities of mine dewatering A conventional approach to mine dewatering can focus heavily on selecting a pump for a particular ow and head. That is necessary, but it doesn’t cover all stops. The actual operating environment may involve muddy water, suspended solids, abrasive particles, saline or

hypersaline water, and rapidly changing discharge conditions. The pump system must therefore remain reliable as the mine develops and the duty evolves. The Roto Mining Station is designed around this requirement. The station incorporates a Roto FLEX exible-shaft progressive cavity pump, a separation tank, skid arrangement and associated piping and valves. The system is intended to collect and handle mine water while providing the pressure capability required to transfer it from increasingly deep working areas. The exible-shaft pump design eliminates conventional universal cardan or gear joints, reducing a source of mechanical wear within the pump system. “This is not a cosmetic change in pump architecture,” Roto Pumps Australia general manager John Wilkins said. “In harsh mining service, removing

components that are exposed to repeated mechanical movement and dicult operating conditions can have a direct eect on maintainability and equipment life. “The objective is simple: keep the dewatering system working while the mine keeps moving.” One of the strongest technical arguments for the Mining Station is its ability to operate at high discharge pressures. The Roto mining pump range is specied for pressures up to 48 bar (696 PSI), depending on model and conguration. This high-pressure capability helps avoid the requirement for multiple centrifugal pumps to achieve the same duty parameters. “As the mine advances deeper, static head and discharge pressure increase,” Wilkins said. “The Roto Mining Station is designed to maintain consistent ow as pressure changes, giving operators greater exibility as the dewatering system moves deeper into the mine. “This allows the pump set to eectively ‘travel’ down the mine, supporting changing dewatering requirements without compromising ow. This is a key advantage of positive displacement pumping in deepmine applications.” For the mining engineer, that translates into a useful operational characteristic: ow can remain comparatively stable while discharge pressure changes.

Designed for harsh mine water Mine water rarely behaves like laboratory water. The water entering a dewatering station may carry suspended solids, sand, silt and other abrasive contaminants. In some mining environments, salinity is also a consideration. This is precisely where pump selection becomes important. The Roto Mining Station is designed to handle abrasive media and hypersaline water, while the associated FLEX pump incorporates a range of features aimed at improving durability in harsh service. These include a double hard-chromeplated rotor, with tungsten carbide rotor options available for more arduous applications, and abrasion-resistant natural or nitrile elastomer stators. The stainless-steel end cover is intended to reduce the eects of erosion and corrosion, while the heavyduty bearing housing is constructed in upgraded cast steel. The pump also uses

Instead of treating the pump as a single piece of equipment, the Mining Station represents a complete dewatering solution.

The Roto FLEX flexible-shaft progressive cavity pump.

a exible shaft rather than universal joints, creating a drive arrangement designed specically for the demands of mine dewatering. “These details are important because mining reliability is rarely determined by one component alone,” Wilkins said. “The rotor material, stator compound, shaft arrangement, sealing system, bearing selection, operating speed and dierential pressure all contribute to the actual service life of the pump. “Correct pump selection, appropriate speed, suitable stages and proper material selection are essential to achieving longer pump life in abrasive service.” In other words, there is no shortcut around application engineering.

Separating solids before they reach the pump Another practical feature of the Mining Station is the solid separation tank, which is equipped with screens to help remove larger solid particles before they reach the pump system or downstream equipment. This provides a rst line of protection against undesirable solids entering the pump. For a mining operator, this is an important systems-level consideration.

“A pump may be capable of handling suspended solids, but that doesn’t mean every large foreign object should be allowed into the pump system,” Wilkins said. “Separating larger solids upstream can reduce the risk of blockage and protect downstream equipment.” The station also incorporates a removable inspection ladder to support inspection, maintenance and troubleshooting. The skid-mounted arrangement represents a complete dewatering solution, removing the need for site teams to assemble multiple components around the pump. “It is this kind of detail that mining engineers will prot from in the long run and goes beyond what is outlined on a specication sheet,” Wilkins said. In mining operations, the lowest-cost pump is not always the lowest-cost solution. The right system is the one engineered for the actual uid, pressure, solids and mine depth. The Roto Mining Station combines high-pressure progressive cavity pumping with an integrated dewatering system designed for demanding mine conditions. Because keeping the mine productive starts with keeping water under control.

The case for electrication As mining operations seek greater efficiency, electric diaphragm pumps are challenging the long-established role of AODDs.

W

hether margins are narrowing or commodities prices are soaring, the goal for a mine is the same: how to extract maximum value from operations. Mining companies, contractors and service providers are having to be more creative in their operational philosophy, which means many traditional technologies are being increasingly superseded. Air-operated double diaphragm (AODDs) pumps have been a mine site’s best friend for decades, serving as a robust and safe solution for dewatering, slurry transfer, chemical dosing and the delivery of fuel or lubricants. AODDs are reliable but they are largely inecient and resource intensive, meaning they no longer satisfy the cost and productivity demands of many modern mine sites. This has seen a new solution come to the fore: the electric diaphragm pump, of which Graco has been a key proponent.

14

Pump Industry | Spring 2026 | Issue 57

The Australian mining industry is increasingly gravitating to Graco’s QUANTM electric diaphragm pump.

As All Pumps sales consultant Oscar Hurrell explained, the Australian mining industry is increasingly falling in love with Graco’s QUANTM electric diaphragm pump. “We’ve seen QUANTM pumps replace a range of other pump technologies on mine sites, including peristaltic hose pumps, progressive cavity (helical rotor) pumps, and standard diaphragm or piston dosing pumps,” he told Pump Industry. “They’ve been successfully used in otation, carbon-in-leach (CIL) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuits, pumping everything from lime to cyanide, and have become a key plank in solvent extraction. “QUANTM pumps have increasingly populated gold, rare earth and other mineral processing facilities across Australia.”

Rening the technology As one of Graco’s leading Australian QUANTM distributors, All Pumps

played a central role in the technology’s pilot phase, where the range went through stringent testing to prime it for Australian mining operations. “There was a lot of work done on front-end engineering, but we had to get this product up to speed with local conditions,” Hurrell said. “We worked with Graco on eld trials. From the challenging environments of the Pilbara to the coalelds in Queensland and New South Wales, QUANTM was put through its paces, where it was exposed to high humidity and ambient temperatures up to 55°C. “The eld trials were successful. It wasn’t long before Australian mining operators resonated with its capabilities.” Hurrell said QUANTM’s main appeal in the mining industry has been its energy eciency. “Traditional AODDs are inecient from a power perspective,” he said. “Only a fraction of the electricity a compressor draws ends up usable

The suite of QUANTM electric diaphragm pumps.

for a pump – the rest is lost as heat in compression and then lost again through leaks and pressure declines across a plant’s air network. “The QUANTM range removes the compressor from the equation entirely: it’s a diaphragm pump driven directly by an electric motor, so the pump draws only the power it actually needs to move uid. This unlocks energy eciencies of 85 per cent.” To demonstrate QUANTM’s total cost of ownership (TCO) advantages, Hurrell made a comparison. “If you had a 1” AODD and a 1” QUANTM side by side, the QUANTM would naturally have a higher capital cost, but the peripheral costs are where the return on investment (ROI) is achieved,” he said. “With an AODD, operations front the cost of compressed air; the need to balance compressor capacity, which can have an exponential impact on operating costs; the cost of more control equipment; and the greater risk of downtime, to name a few. “With QUANTM, operators can unlock a longer lifecycle. ROI can be achieved even faster in mining operations with high throughputs and operating demands.” In most industries, operators must abide by strict noise restrictions for compliance and the safety of their workers. QUANTM delivers a minimum 30dBa drop in noise per pump, which is advantageous for both underground and surface mining operations. And while pneumatic AODDs can be dicult to control without an air solenoid and some PLC logic, QUANTM is dierent. “QUANTM adds two things AODD pumps never had: proportional

4–20-milliamp (mA) control to connect with a plant control system, and IECEx hazardous-area certication,” Hurrell said. “Together, these open the door to reagent and chemical dosing duties around a mine site that a compressedair pump was previously excluded from, or that was the exclusive territory of peristaltic and metering dosing pumps.” By accepting a standard 4–20mA current input to set speed/ow and pressure, QUANTM can be driven directly from a PLC or DCS – the same signal type used to control dosing pumps today. This allows proportional dosing (e.g. connecting chemical addition rate to ore feed tonnage, pulp ow, or a pH/ORP signal) in a way a manually set air-regulator on an AODD pump never could. Hurrell explained why IECEx hazardous-area certication is also important. “Hazardous-area certication matters because a lot of the reagents used in mineral processing – ammable solvent-extraction diluents, cyanide solution areas, some otation reagents – are handled in or near classied zones,” he said. “Historically, that has pushed operators towards air-operated pumps (no electrics in the hazardous zone) or peristaltic pumps. An IECEx-rated electric pump means you can now get the control and eciency benets of an electric drive without giving up hazardous-area compliance.”

Chemical compatibility Furthermore, QUANTM isn’t a single xed-material pump.

Wetted sections are available across a wide range of materials – including aluminium, cast iron, conductive polypropylene, standard polypropylene, PVDF, and 316 stainless steel – with diaphragms, seals and check valves available in a range of engineered elastomers/thermoplastics. “Fluid type and concentration varies enormously across a site and a pump that can be specied in the right wetted material for each stream, rather than one material across the whole site, gives the end user greater agency and reduces the corrosion and wear failures that dosing equipment is prone to,” Hurrell said. Hurrell said QUANTM was “only scratching the surface” of the Australian mining sector, with the pump able to be used in any mining operation that doses chemicals or uses AODDs. Alongside gold and rare earth processing, this includes iron ore, coal, copper and lithium operations, to name a few. And when it comes to QUANTM’s key value proposition, it doesn’t take long to make a convincing argument. “Convention has traditionally been the order of the day in mining: ‘If it isn’t broken, don’t x it’,” Hurrell said. “But dierent mining personnel such as reliability and process engineers are often interested if you can show the return on investment and how it simplies operation. Same goes for operators and maintenance personnel. “By demonstrating the benets, you can facilitate change, and end users are increasingly opting for the QUANTM pump as part of this.” As QUANTM pumps increasingly pervade the Australian mining industry, All Pumps will continue its market engagement.

“The Australian market hasn’t seen many completely new pump technologies in the last 50 years – I’d say QUANTM is one of the most signicant inventions since the submersible electric pump,” Hurrell said. “So, for us it’s about education and demonstration. We have demonstration skids which we take to an oce or site, where operators can see the pump in the esh, and play around with controlling and running it. We’re doing that with engineering rms and mining companies, driving from both angles.” And when customers ask if going electric means losing the ruggedness AODD pumps are known for, Hurrell is equipped to answer. “QUANTM still runs dry and still dead-heads safely against a closed valve – the two traits that made AODD pumps the default for tough and challenging transfer applications,” he said. “What’s changed is how it’s powered and controlled, not its tolerance for rough treatment.”

When dewatering demands more A

cross Australia’s mining industry, keeping water under control is essential to keeping operations moving. From groundwater entering deep open pits to seasonal rainfall and underground inows, dewatering systems must respond to conditions that can vary signicantly between sites. As mines advance deeper to access mineralisation, pumps are often required to move water over considerable vertical distances, while abrasive materials and corrosive water conditions can add further complexity to pump operation. For Sterling Pumps, these circumstances make pump selection an engineering exercise rather than simply an equipment decision. “Every Australian mine site has a dierent set of conditions, so understanding the application is where we always start,” Sterling Pumps managing director Anton Merry said. “With dewatering, water quality is a critical factor that inuences wear rates, corrosion resistance, and the operating loads placed on pump and motor components. Because we design and manufacture our solutions in-house, we can tailor every aspect of the pump and motor package to suit the specic conditions of each mine site, delivering greater reliability and longer service life.” Sterling has supplied pumping equipment to mining operations across Australia and overseas, with its technologies used to support commodities including iron ore, gold, coal, nickel and bauxite. Central to its dewatering capability is an extensive range of submersible,

18

Pump Industry | Spring 2026 | Issue 57

line shaft turbine, split case and multistage pumps. Sterling’s submersible range can accommodate ows up to 3600m³/h and heads exceeding 550m. For high-head duties, the pumps can be hydraulically balanced to reduce the load placed on the motor thrust bearing. The company’s line shaft turbine pumps provide another option for high-ow, high-head duties, with multiple stages available where greater discharge pressures are required. Sterling’s horizontal split case pumps oer ow capacities beyond 2800m³/h for high-volume applications.

Made for the application Sterling’s mining capability extends well beyond dewatering. Its pumps have been used to supply water for mining communities, mineral processing and reghting applications. The company can manufacture equipment in materials ranging from conventional cast iron and 316 stainless steels through to duplex and super duplex stainless steels for more demanding applications. Other options include nickel aluminium bronze, Inconel 625 and Zeron 100. Where an existing pump cannot meet a project specication, Sterling can design and manufacture a customised solution from scratch. One example saw the company engineer four 14-inch super duplex submersible pumps, each paired with a 330kW super duplex motor, for a dewatering project at the base of a volcano in Indonesia. This engineering capability is supported from Melbourne, where Sterling undertakes pump design,

manufacturing and testing. As an original equipment manufacturer, Sterling can take a product through 3D computer-aided design (CAD) modelling and prototyping before machining, fabrication and assembly phases are completed. Sterling operates pump testing facilities in Pakenham and Sunshine. The Pakenham site incorporates a 15m-deep wet well and ow loops capable of testing up to 2500m³/h, while the larger Sunshine facility can accommodate heads up to 1800m and power up to 2.5MW. Pumps can be performance tested against applicable standards, with actual operating curves compared with design curves before equipment leaves the factory. Sterling can also undertake mechanical running tests to assess characteristics such as vibration and temperature under operation. For Anton Merry, keeping these capabilities close at hand is particularly valuable in maintaining a signicant stock holding, and more importantly when a mining application requires more than an o-the-shelf solution. “Our focus is on giving customers condence that the pump going into their operation has been designed with their specic duty in mind.”

Beating slurry’s toughest demands From slurry seals to wear-resistant coatings, Chesterton is helping mine sites tackle abrasion, corrosion and unplanned downtime.

M

ining operations place extraordinary demands on pumps and process equipment. Abrasive slurries, corrosive process uids, and continuous operation create some of the harshest operating conditions in industry. These environments accelerate wear on seals, sleeves, impellers, and liners, often resulting in reduced equipment eciency, unplanned downtime, and increased maintenance costs. For decades, A.W. Chesterton Company has helped mining companies improve equipment reliability through engineered sealing and wear protection technologies that enhance performance and reduce total lifecycle costs. This commitment was recently showcased at the Queensland Mining & Engineering Exhibition (QME) in Mackay, where Chesterton engaged with mining professionals on the latest approaches to improving pump reliability and asset performance.

Images: Chesterton

Engineered for harsh slurry applications One of the featured solutions was the 170L Slurry Single Cartridge Seal, developed specically for demanding slurry pump applications. “The 170L is engineered to handle abrasive, high-solids slurries while reducing maintenance requirements and improving pump reliability,” Chesterton sales and business development

manager – Australia and New Zealand Jorge Mellado said. “Its robust cartridge design simplies installation and maintenance, while the non-clog stationary spring arrangement keeps critical components out of the process uid.” By preventing solids from accumulating around the springs, the seal maintains consistent face loading and reliable sealing performance in severe mining environments. For mining operations that rely on packed pumps, DualPac 2211 slurry packing oers an innovative solution for improving reliability in abrasive slurry applications. Using Chesterton’s patented DualPac braiding technology, the packing combines graphite-lled ePTFE against the shaft for superior sealing and low friction with highstrength aramid on the stung box side to resist consolidation and extrusion. “Designed for ore slurries, mineral handling, dewatering pumps, and tailings applications, DualPac 2211 requires fewer gland adjustments than conventional packing, helping extend packing life while reducing shaft wear and maintenance requirements,” Mellado said. ARC MX1 takes Chesterton’s oerings a step further, providing a ceramicreinforced wear compound specically developed to protect equipment exposed to severe abrasion, erosion, and particle impact.

Chesterton’s 170 Slurry Single Cartridge Seal excels at sealing mineral-based process materials.

Suitable for slurry pumps, casings, impellers, piping, cyclones, chutes, and other process equipment, ARC MX1 restores worn components while providing a durable protective barrier that extends equipment life. This results in reduced maintenance, fewer component replacements, and improved operational eciency.

A complete reliability approach Reliable pump performance on mine sites depends on more than a single product; it requires an integrated approach to sealing, wear protection, and asset reliability. “By combining seals, packing and coating solutions with engineering expertise, Chesterton doesn’t just provide the technologies to support mining operations, but the industry nous to maximise their impact,” Mellado said. “As mining operators netune their equipment to unlock greater eciencies and asset performance, access to engineered reliability solutions could be the dierence between a pump breakdown or continued uptime.” Chesterton isn’t sitting still either, with the company’s research and development engine continually pioneering solutions to achieve new, intuitive ways of operating. Add its uncompromising service capability and Chesterton has become a cornerstone reliability partner for the mining industry, helping customers protect their assets and keep operations running at peak performance. The complete package

SAER is helping Australian miners overcome complex water challenges with tailored pumping solutions and extensive stock availability.

Tailored to mining operations No two mining installations present the same hydraulic, structural or space constraints. For this reason, adaptability is a key part of pump selection and system design. SAER’s in-house research and development (R&D) team develops customised congurations according to the technical and operational requirements of each project. The IR, NCB and MG end-suction ranges and SKD split-case pumps, for example, can be supplied in vertical congurations when installation space is limited. hile water is omnipresent on a mine site, how it is managed dictates the success of an operation. Across underground dewatering, dust control, water treatment and mineral processing, operators with stringent water management strategies can access long-term cost benets and embed resilience into their plant. Inuenced by the need for continuity, reliability and speed, operators may value OEMs and suppliers capable of providing robust pumping solutions, responsive delivery and strong product availability. SAER Elettropompe has positioned its oering around these requirements. Built on more than seven decades of manufacturing expertise and Made in Italy production, SAER oers a broad portfolio of centrifugal pumps and electric motors, including SKD split-case pumps (up to 5000m³/h) and end-suction pumps for water (IR-closed coupled, MG-stub shaft, NCBK-end suction) and wastewater (NCA range, up to 2400m³/h) applications. The company also oers multistage pumps (TM range up to 60 bar), submersible pumps (S and the new VS series, up to 14”) and sewage submersible pumps (SD range), along with its own submersible (up to 400hp and 1000V) and surface motors (up to 132kW).

SAER manufactures end-suction pumps for water and wastewater applications on mine sites.

reliable operation over time. This ensures customers not only receive a proven product, but tailored engineering to suit their operation. A recent project highlighted how SAER solutions support reliable operation in demanding mining environments. A customer operating a tailings pond required tailings to be diluted with process water before being pumped by submersible pumps. Previously, water supply operated by gravity, but the available pressure was not sucient for the process requirements. To solve this issue, SAER supplied a vertical split-case pump SKDVZ4P-150-400 equipped with a 55kW motor, designed to increase and stabilise the pressure in the line. When pressure in the pipeline dropped below the required level, the pump started automatically, restoring the required pressure and supporting continuous operations. The customer suddenly had access to a more reliable water supply while overcoming the limitations of the previous gravity-fed conguration. In mining, delayed equipment can aect schedules, productivity and costs.

Availability is therefore just as important as pump performance. This is where SAER’s stock availability and exibility become a strategic advantage and can signicantly shorten lead times. The company not only maintains availability in widely used materials such as cast iron and AISI 316, but also in super duplex, ensuring customers receive the fast response they deserve.

SAER selection software To further support customers and engineers when choosing the right pump, SAER’s pump selection software is available online and is continuously updated with the latest products, solutions and technical developments. This digital tool makes it easier to identify the most suitable pump for specic operating requirements and provides quick access to up-to-date product information. TECO Energy Solutions unites transformers, busway and battery storage under one locally supported power path.

H

aving operated in Australia for almost 50 years, TECO Australia & New Zealand is a recognised name in motors and drives, with many of its electric motors and variable speed drives supporting pump applications across Australia and New Zealand. As TECO evolves its product portfolio to support new sectors and applications, the company is expanding into renewable energy and power infrastructure industries. This strategy is already paying o, with the company already supplying its rst three utility-scale sites, with further projects in the pipeline.

Manager of TECO’s Energy Solutions division, Gustavo Sgrott.

TECO is also working on energy solutions for the Australian mining industry, which faces unique challenges given the remote and expansive nature of its operations. The manner in which these sites are powered is becoming more complicated, with the advent of renewable energy changing how power is consumed and distributed on-site. From grid connection to site distribution and energy storage, projects are accumulating more risk across their energy value chain, which is further heightened when multiple suppliers are responsible for each layer.

Pump Industry | Spring 2026 | Issue 57

TECO Energy Solutions is structured to close that gap. This division covers the complete power path: power transformers, busway distribution systems, and solar plus battery energy storage, all supplied and supported by a local team in Australia and New Zealand. TECO’s transformer range runs from 25kVA to 150MVA at 150kV class, covering everything from ancillary site loads through to major grid connections. Three product families address dierent project requirements. Dry cast-resin transformers are oilfree with vacuum-encapsulated highvoltage windings, achieving less than 10 picocoulombs of partial discharge. They are type-tested to IEC 60076-11 and certied by TÜV Rheinland. Distribution transformers are designed to AS/NZS 60076, available up to 20MVA at 33kV with on-load tap changers and thermal protection as standard. Oil-lled power transformers reach 150MVA at 150kV, built with continuously transposed conductors and grain-oriented core step-lap stacking, with noise output below 67dB on larger units.

Replacing cable in demanding environments TECO’s TECOBAR® busway systems address the space and installation complexity that cable-heavy site distribution creates. The low-voltage sandwich busway handles up to 6300A at 1000V and replaces up to ve times the equivalent parallel cable run. It carries a 20 per cent overload rating for two hours without derating, relevant in mining operations with variable load cycles.

TECO’s transformer range runs from 25kVA to 150MVA at 150kV class.

TECO is currently delivering to its first three utility-scale sites in Australia and New Zealand.

For environments where standard protection ratings aren’t sucient, the low-voltage cast-resin busway is rated IP69 and IK11, certied explosion-proof, and built to IEEE 693 seismic requirements. It carries IEC 60331 and BS 6387 re ratings, produces no toxic gas in a re event, and is designed for more than 60 years of service with no maintenance required after installation. For medium-voltage (MV) distribution,

TECO oers MV cast-resin busway rated to 24kV and 6300A, with 120kA shortcircuit withstand capability. Compared to cable installations, the busway systems deliver up to a 60 per cent space saving – invaluable to any site where civil headroom is limited. TECO delivers solar and battery energy storage as a package for EPCM (engineering, procurement, and construction management) and ongoing operations and maintenance. The energy management system supports frequency regulation, FCAS participation, peak shaving, PV smoothing, and spinning reserve. Power conversion eciency reaches up to 99 per cent. Systems are available in DC-coupled or AC-coupled congurations and are compatible with all major battery chemistries. TECO is currently delivering to its rst three utility-scale sites in Australia and New Zealand, with further projects in the pipeline.

Local engineering, global manufacturing TECO held the number-one position on the 2024 Dow Jones Sustainability Index for ESG performance in the electromechanical industry and ranked in the top 1 per cent of the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2025. Engineering support across Australia and New Zealand is delivered from ISO 9001, ISO 45001, and IECEx certied workshops, with factory-trained engineers covering the full product range. For mining operators managing the energy transition, a single supplier across transformer, busway, and storage reduces the coordination risk that has historically come with fragmented procurement. It also puts accountability in one place, from grid connection to battery storage. For more info, contact the TECO Energy Solutions team at energy.teco.com.au www.pumpindustry.com.au

MINING EVENTS AIMEX 2027 will be rich with insights shaping the future of pump applications in the mining sector.

The stage is set

AIMEX 2027 will give pump professionals insight into the changing technologies and priorities shaping the Australian mining industry. attracted representatives from major mining companies including BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue and Glencore, alongside an international audience spanning more than 30 countries. Tony Saulters, chief operating ocer of AIMEX 2027 major sponsor Business Events Adelaide, said the value of the event extends beyond AIMEX itself. “We hope people coming here will connect with the industry locally, and those connections lead to further collaboration down the track,” he said. A conversation with a mine operator about a dewatering challenge, for example, can provide a deeper understanding of the conditions behind a project. Discussions with engineers and technology providers can also reveal how pump systems could integrate with broader automation or energymanagement strategies. AIMEX’s conference program will add another dimension, with three days of sessions focused on operational excellence, innovation and sustainability,

while dedicated networking opportunities will allow those discussions to continue beyond formal sessions. South Australia has a long mining history spanning copper, uranium and iron ore production. The state has led Australia’s renewable energy revolution, while critical minerals such as rare earths, manganese and graphite are increasingly in-focus. This is creating new intersections between resources, energy and technology. AIMEX 2027 will provide the platform for these intersections to ourish, making the event a compelling proposition for the pump industry. Saulters said AIMEX represents the type of event Adelaide wants to attract. “We’re looking to attract the brightest minds, the best events, the most impactful knowledge, and we’re hoping that AIMEX is a prime example of what we do and capable of,” he said.

merging commodities and new ways of operating are changing the equipment needs of Australian mining operations. As mines pursue greater automation, improve energy eciency and bring greeneld sites into production, while pumps remain a key plank of operations, how they’re being used is evolving. The 2027 instalment of Asia-Pacic’s International Mining Exhibition (AIMEX) will bring these developments into focus when the event returns to Adelaide Showground from September 28–30 next year. AIMEX brings together mining operators, engineers, executives and technology providers to examine the ideas and solutions inuencing the sector’s future. For the pump industry, this provides an opportunity to look beyond pumps themselves and understand the changing operational conditions in which they are deployed. This includes the mining industry’s push to reduce energy consumption, which inuences the dewatering, slurry handling and process applications that require pumping equipment to operate continuously in harsh conditions. Condition monitoring and predictive maintenance can inuence how pumps are operated and maintained. Electrication can change requirements for motors and drives, while more sophisticated process control can create optimisation opportunities for pump systems. AIMEX 2027 provides a direct connection to the companies making those decisions. The 2025 event

PUMP CURVES

#19: The energy equation United Pumps engineering manager Ron Astall explains why system design is critical to reducing energy consumption in pumping applications.

W

hen the topic is “eciency”, we might be discussing reliability and operability, but most of the time we are talking about energy (power) consumption. For a pump system, it is instructive to think of the ‘specic energy consumption’, which is the energy consumed per volume of liquid pumped. This is usually expressed as kilowatthour per cubic metre (see gure 1). In a given pump system, liquid density is not a variable we can inuence, nor is gravity. The only variables we can adjust to reduce energy consumption are the total dynamic head (H) and the pump and motor eciencies (see gure 2). Increasing motor (or driver) and pump eciencies are obvious places to start. Total dynamic head (H) is dependent on the system and process design. Is decreasing H really feasible? I will introduce a concept called process eciency to discuss this aspect.

Motor and drive eciency We now have mandatory electric motor eciency standards in place (MEPS) in most markets. Typically, modern motors are around three to ve per cent more ecient than 20 years ago. Where variable frequency drives (VFDs) are involved, there is an additional, usually small eciency loss. Modern couplings generally have negligible power losses. We will discuss the benets of VFDs separately. More ecient pumps In previous Pump Industry articles, we have discussed in some detail how centrifugal pump eciency fundamentally depends on impeller shape and, to a lesser extent, detailed design and running clearances. By selecting an ideal running speed and perhaps considering a multi-stage pump, we can often ensure an inherently better pump selection. The dierence between a low specic speed impeller shape and an optimised shape can lead to a 30–50 per cent eciency gain. Optimising an existing pump design with tighter clearances and other design tweaks has a small, limited scope for eciency improvement. Let’s say 3–7 www.pumpindustry.com.au

31

PUMP CURVES

per cent. If you want more detail, have a look at my previous articles in Pump Industry from May and July 2014 and October 2023.

Process eciency Process eciency is the ratio of the minimum required head for the process to operate successfully, divided by the actual total system head (see gure 6). Virtually every process and pump system will have some unnecessary losses, such as excessive head losses due to pipe friction, and losses in undersized or badly designed ttings. Does this mean we should make our pipe sizes extremely oversized to reduce line friction? Of course not. There are optimum line sizes. Too large a line can cause settling, for example. If you are putting out a re, you want a high nozzle velocity. Figure 7 lists a selection of typical minimum process head scenarios and describes what I consider to be unnecessary losses. Perhaps controversially, I consider control valve throttling losses as being “unnecessary”. Sometimes a valve may be unavoidable for ow control, but with the advent of aordable VFDs, the option of replacing a ow control valve with a variable speed drive can achieve a dramatic reduction in system head compared to a control valve. Holistic pump system design Ecient pumps, drivers and sensible pump selections are important. We can also see that a focus on system design and the avoidance of unnecessary system head losses has the potential for massive energy savings. Remember that a key component of ‘specic energy consumption’ is the total dynamic system head. I’ve seen highly ecient pumps and drivers running nicely and smoothly solely because a throttling valve is controlling the ow, wasting up to 30 per cent of the dierential head in the process. There are many systems running like this and wasting energy. While the pumps may be reliable, they are invisible to management and no one worries about how much power they are using. An ongoing focus of the Hydraulic Institute and the British Pump Manufacturers Association is the education of pump users on better pump system design. Properly selected pumps are important. Ecient drivers are important. System design is even more important.

Smarter food ow

Burkert Australia’s latest fluid control technologies are helping food processors streamline operations and limit food loss.

ustralian food and beverage manufacturers are under increasing pressure to improve production eciency, reduce product loss and maintain hygienic processing standards across increasingly complex production lines. At the same time, rising investment in smart factories, clean-in-place systems, energy optimisation and plant-based production is increasing demand for more intelligent uid control and monitoring solutions. As one of the world’s leading uid control innovators, Burkert Australia has been a key proponent of this evolution, helping food and beverage processors and manufacturers enhance their systems to achieve zero product loss, greater energy savings, and reduced downtime. Burkert Australia recently participated in foodpro 2026 in Melbourne, where the company launched its second

generation of universal control heads, Type 8682 and 8683, and new modular vessel pressure controller, Type 8880. For Burkert Australia product, training and distribution manager David Ray, the event oered the opportunity to learn of changing customer needs. “Food and beverage customers are increasingly wanting solutions that improve reliability and avoid product loss,” he told Pump Industry on the oor of the event. “They’re asking for real-time information and diagnostics, so they can anticipate failures ahead of time. This is where our uid control and automation solutions come to the fore.” The food and beverage industry operates on tight margins, so unplanned equipment failures are costly on multiple fronts. When a line stops, often any product sitting in pipes or on the line must be discarded because it no longer meets

quality or food-safety requirements, creating waste and lost production. Producers are therefore focused on preventing breakdowns and minimising downtime: they want reliable, continuous operation of pumps, valves and lling equipment, and diagnostic solutions that ensure they’re always a step ahead. How does Burkert Australia support this? “Our smart diagnostics and conditionmonitoring solutions help producers evaluate their mechanical parts and visualise when and where an issue is arising,” Ray said. “We can measure the time it takes for a valve to complete its operating cycle. After 20 strokes, for example, if the actuation time increases by 20 per cent, it may indicate that movement is slowing and should be inspected. “The equipment won’t stop, but the moment it’s operating slower than it

should, there’s usually an issue. We can then investigate and x it.” If the valve timing moves outside the expected range, the integrated colour indicators, such as Burkert’s universal control heads, will provide a clear visual alert by changing colour or ashing. “A ashing light shows where the fault is – it could be valve three or cluster four,” Ray said. “There are no guessing games with our diagnostic technology.”

From pneumatics to electric drives Answerable to sustainability obligations and rising costs, food and beverage processors are increasingly making the shift from compressed air to electric drives, with Burkert’s EVA electromagnetic valve actuator range oering a more energy-ecient solution for automated valve control. “Tier 1 food companies are increasingly saying, ‘We can’t add more compressed air to our production lines because it’s expensive to run’,” Ray said. “Operators can save about ve times the power by using Burkert’s electric valves over compressed air.” Burkert’s control systems can complete a range of tasks on a food production line, with hygienic valves able to divert, turn o and on, or modulate the control of products. The company also oers Clean-in-Place (CIP) and Sterilisation-in-Place (SIP) capability. “When a food and beverage plant is nished with a production run, they need to clean their lines to ush out any disused product,” Ray said. “During CIP and SIP cycles, cleaning media such as steam, acids and wash chemicals pass through the same hygienic process lines used for food production, so Burkert certies the relevant valve components, including elastomers, body materials and lubricants for suitability in food and beverage applications.”

While CIP removes food soils, chemical residues, and organic matter from the production line using a recycled sequence of water and chemical rinses, SIP then sterilises the line by killing microorganisms, spores, and viruses using thermal energy. Burkert Australia designs its food and beverage process valves, sensors, and control cabinets to comply with international and Australian hygienic engineering standards, ensuring safety, cleanability, and smooth integration into CIP and SIP.

Centralised vs decentralised automation Burkert’s automation oering oers producers the choice between centralised systems, where electronic control is housed in a cabinet, and decentralised systems that bring automation directly to individual valves. For Ray, the ability to oer either approach is an important point of dierence. “We’re one of the few companies that can oer both centralised and

decentralised automation, which is a major benet for the customer,” he said. “If a customer is looking at centralised automation, we can also show them why decentralised might suit their application – and vice versa.” Decentralised automation is enabled by control heads mounted directly to the valve actuator, bringing control and monitoring closer to the process rather than relying entirely on a central cabinet. “Our control heads support dierent communication protocols, allowing them to communicate directly with the plant’s control system,” Ray said. This becomes particularly important when pumps, valves and other equipment need to operate in a dened sequence. Burkert’s technology can provide feedback conrming that one action has occurred before allowing the next to proceed. “The purpose is to interlock,” Ray said. “You tell the valve to turn on and it provides feedback conrming it has done what you asked. Then you can start a pump or move to the next step. “If the previous action hasn’t happened, the next piece of equipment won’t start.” For pumps operating within an automated production line, this creates a clearer relationship between pump operation and the uid-control equipment around it. As food and beverage plants become more intelligent, ecient and reliable, partners who understand the entire uid control process will have an increasingly important role to play. Burkert Australia is positioning its uid control and automation solutions to meet that need.

A

s a rush of new technologies transforms industrial processes, nothing can replace handson expertise. Scott Henderson, which started condition-monitoring consultancy Thermalign in 2013 with just a few instruments to his name, has spent much of his career in the trenches, learning the ropes of industrial reliability. With decades of engineering and condition monitoring expertise behind him, Henderson has seen a proliferation of “mass-produced” diagnostic technologies and a lack of technical knowledge to support them. “When we started this business (now known as CM Group), a professional thermal imaging camera would set you back $25,000,” Henderson told Pump Industry. “A camera with that resolution and a similar lens size will now cost you about $5500 – it’s a huge dierence. “Despite this, the knowledge required to operate that eectively has not changed. You still need an understanding of the technology, what it’s capable of and, more importantly, what it’s not capable of.” As the price of thermal-imaging technology and condition-monitoring equipment has come down, companies are increasingly producing sensors they say will pick up all the faults. “But when we talk to the people purveying them and explain vibration analysis 101, they’re often like, ‘Oh, geez, we didn’t know that’,” Henderson said. “Customers are being oversold on the capabilities of these sensors, the number required and algorithms behind them. They’re being mass-marketed as aordable vibration analysis solutions supported by warm, fuzzy dashboards, but in reality they don’t provide the precise insights needed to avoid equipment failures.” With a growing client base of Australian utilities and industrial operators, CM Group is dierent, serving as a vendor-agnostic service specialist for pumps and rotating equipment. The company covers the full spectrum of condition monitoring, providing vibration analysis, thermal imaging, acoustic ultrasound, laser alignment and precision maintenance services backed by a suite of specialist products. A team of CM Group analysts helps advise operators ahead of time if they’re facing any wear or pain points that could lead to unplanned downtime. This keeps

pump systems running longer. “We work closely with any industry that requires condition-monitoring equipment and consultancy,” Henderson said. “This includes everything from water and wastewater treatment to mining, recycling, milk processing and pharmaceuticals. “We have sensors installed at many Victorian and NSW water and wastewater sites and pump stations, and we do a lot of work on laser alignment, condition monitoring and fault investigations at treatment plants across the two states. “We’ve held a South East Water contract for nearly a decade for condition monitoring on their pump assets, while we also look after Goulburn Valley Water’s assets and have done considerable pump- and resonance-based work for Barwon Water, Southern Rural Water and Melbourne Water.”

Early failure detection The essence of condition monitoring is the ability to detect failures early and accurately. “In vibration analysis, such as spectrum analysis and time waveform analysis, we closely monitor a system’s performance throughout its lifecycle,” Henderson said. “If we see any abnormalities, mitigating strategies can then be put in, like increasing or decreasing lubrication before damage occurs. “If there’s an imbalance, a misalignment or loose components in a pump, for example, we can detect this and schedule a clean, a balance or recommend adjustments to prevent damage from occurring.” For Henderson, this distinction is critical as more operators consider lower-cost sensor technologies that rely on overall vibration measurements and automated alerts. While such systems can provide an indication that something has changed, they don’t provide the detailed insights required to learn what is happening inside the machine or how much time remains before a failure. “The whole point of vibration analysis is not to x your equipment,” Henderson said. “It’s like a doctor putting a stethoscope on your heart. It doesn’t x it, but we do the equivalent of an MRI on a machine, to provide forewarning of potential failures and inform an action plan.” These insights can be particularly

valuable in water and wastewater treatment plants, where a pump failure can cause sewage overows, backow contamination and lead to regulatory nes. Accompanying pump systems are forced to pick up the slack, which might not have the redundancy they once had, as growing populations increase the load on existing infrastructure. “If you have a pump failure, that could be out for three, four or ve months,” Henderson said. “You might then have zero redundancy left on the other pumps – a narrow margin for any operation. “We need to reduce that risk, and we do that with in-depth analysis of rotating components and high-value, long-lead-time equipment.” Resonance is an area of particular concern, where the operating speed of a pump interacts with its natural frequency to cause an increase in vibration. Because this issue can occur within a narrow speed range, identifying it requires more than simply monitoring whether a vibration value has crossed a predetermined threshold. By detecting these faults ahead of time, CM Group can alert operators to act and mitigate any secondary damage. From monitoring to commissioning CM Group’s approach is not limited to active assets. Its systems remain online through maintenance and recommissioning, allowing operators to establish whether equipment has been correctly reinstated. “If they’ve replaced a motor, for instance, we can check whether the installation was successful and whether they’ve aligned it correctly,” Henderson said. “If they’ve left bolts loose, we’ll be able to see that within the data set straight away.” For critical assets where continuous monitoring is needed, CM Group recommends installing wired vibration sensors, while wireless systems – which only take a data reading when there’s an abnormality – are largely used on less-critical assets. Data feeds into a third-party software platform hosted on CM Group’s server. Clients can access trends and raw data, backed by insights and interpretations from CM Group’s team of analysts. For assets that don’t warrant permanent online monitoring, CM Group oers periodic walk-around assessments. If those inspections identify a developing fault, the

PUMP TECHNOLOGY

company’s portable Medusa system can be deployed to provide continuous monitoring. “Medusa can be deployed onto a pump, which turns it into a full online system within 10 minutes,” Henderson said. “We can then look at that fault in-depth and give it a better prognosis and diagnosis from that full-time data.” Medusa can also be used during commissioning, with multiple sensors deployed to capture vibration, temperature and other operation parameters. This is often accompanied by a thermography camera and local HMIs (human-machine interface) attached and fed from the Medusa unit, giving commissioning personnel real-time insights on-site. This range of solutions reects CM Group’s broader approach to condition monitoring. Rather than prescribing a single technology across an entire site, the company assesses the criticality of the asset and the needs of the operator before determining an appropriate monitoring strategy.

Expertise behind the technology This philosophy extends to CM Group’s training institute, which provides certied courses in thermography and vibration analysis alongside noncertied training covering conditionmonitoring and precision maintenance fundamentals. The company also runs laser alignment training to help operators understand the dos and don’ts of the alignment process. This goes beyond what’s oered in a manufacturer’s manual, which is an important distinction. “We’ve trained people who think they know laser alignment, but once they start the course and reach a certain module, they’ve said, ‘Oh no, I’ve been doing this bit wrong the whole time’,” Henderson said.

42

Pump Industry | Spring 2026 | Issue 57

“Product manuals have their limitations. You can show someone how great a product is and how to use it, but you also need to explain the pitfalls and how you can get incorrect information from these machines.” The same principle underpins CM Group’s analytical work. Henderson said becoming a competent vibration analyst requires signicant training and practical experience, with ISO 18436 setting out competency requirements for condition-monitoring personnel. While customers can access the data and trends generated by their monitoring systems, CM Group recommends detailed analysis remain with trained analysts. This is increasingly important as articial intelligence (AI) and automated diagnostics enter the conditionmonitoring market. “I’ve assessed several emerging AI-based systems and found they often struggle to account for the physical environment surrounding a machine,” Henderson said. “A pump doesn’t operate in isolation. Its performance can be inuenced by neighbouring equipment and the structure supporting it – factors that mightn’t be captured by a model trained primarily on datasets or theoretical information.” This further underlines CM Group’s value proposition. “We’re not a dashboard software company,” Henderson said. “We’re a consultancy that oers condition-monitoring analysis and recommendations that a dashboard can’t – that’s where our strength lies.” CM Group’s vendor-agnostic model further embodies this. Rather than being tied to a single manufacturer’s portfolio, the company can select from a range of vendors based on suitability and cost aligned with the client’s expectations and the issues being solved, including

sensors, cables, data acquisition devices etc. “If a client came to us with a problem, we’d analyse that and give them a detailed proposition with options and the pros and cons of each,” Henderson said. “That could include dierent vendors. “By not being tied to one manufacturer, we can choose products from multiple providers to nd the best value for the customer.” Henderson believes this approach will become increasingly important as operators seek to extract more value from existing infrastructure and manage the risks associated with ageing assets. “The meaning of value and nding the right solution for the customer is becoming more urgent as assets age and are increasingly stretched,” Henderson said. “Working with a trusted conditionmonitoring partner could be the dierence between keeping assets online and facing an extended shut imposed by preventable failure. “Operators cannot aord to take this chance, and our credentials partnering with esteemed utilities such as Melbourne Water and South East Water prove that.”

EMERGING INDUSTRIES WEG’s broad technology platform allows components to be selected around specific pump duties and operating profiles.

Pumping up data centres WEG is bringing scalable motor, drive and automation solutions to the pump systems behind data centres.

A

ustralia’s data centre industry is rapidly expanding, with the number of data centre projects seeking grid connection in the National Electricity Market more than doubling from 97 in 2025 to 225 in 2026. Behind a data centre’s servers, storage systems and digital services is a network of cooling, water management and backup systems that must operate reliably around the clock. “Data centres are placing new demands on the infrastructure supporting them, including pump systems responsible for cooling, water circulation and emergency services,” WEG national product manager – industrial motors Sean Sill said. “These applications require more than individual components. They require exible solutions that can be congured to suit the site, integrated into wider control systems and adapted as the facility develops.” For the pump industry, the data

centre boom is creating opportunities to contribute to one of the world’s most critical infrastructure sectors. Cooling systems, chilled water circuits, re protection, water treatment and wastewater management all depend on pump equipment that is not only reliable but can quickly adapt. Australia has been a pioneer in measuring data centre performance. In 2010, the country introduced the NABERS Energy for Data Centres rating, recognised as the world’s rst national data centre energy-eciency rating scheme. Rather than assessing equipment specications alone, NABERS measures how eciently a facility operates in practice, including the energy used by its supporting infrastructure. This whole-of-facility approach highlights the importance of considering cooling, water circulation and pump systems as part of a data centre’s overall performance. “Resilience and continuity are central considerations for data centre operators,” Sill said. “A failure in a cooling or water system can aect operations, service availability and customer condence. “Pump systems must therefore be designed for reliability from the outset, while allowing for maintenance, upgrades and changing operating conditions.” Flexibility is becoming just as important as performance. Data centres may be expanded in stages, adapted to support higher computing loads or recongured as technology develops. A modular approach allows operators to add capacity progressively, rather than making a single large investment

based on uncertain future demand. For pump systems, modularity may involve scalable equipment, adaptable control architecture and standardised designs that can be replicated as a facility grows. This can allow additional pump capacity to be brought online as new data halls are commissioned or cooling requirements increase, without requiring operators to rethink the wider system each time. Achieving this requires motors, variable speed drives and controls to be considered alongside the pump itself. WEG’s broad technology platform allows these components to be selected around specic pump duties and operating proles, while supporting their integration into a data centre’s wider control architecture. Sill said establishing this consistency from the outset can make future expansion more straightforward. “As additional cooling or water circuits are required, operators can build on an established equipment and control philosophy rather than introducing dierent technologies at each stage of development,” he said. “It can also simplify maintenance by reducing variation across installed equipment.” Oering motors, variable speed drives and automation technologies backed by application expertise, WEG can work with pump manufacturers, system designers and data centre operators from the specication stage onwards. This sets up a data centre for success, where the changeability and scalability of an asset deliver no surprises.

PUMP HANDBOOK

Pumps have multiple potential hazards operators need to be mindful of.

Safety at the pump

Understanding potential hazards is essential before undertaking any work around pumpsets.

Pump Industry | Spring 2026 | Issue 57

aving concluded the commissioning series of the Pump Handbook, this section covers the operation and maintenance of pumps including routine and preventive maintenance. First and foremost, advice must be provided on pump safety, ensuring the risks involved in operating and maintaining pumps are understood and mitigated as much as possible.

Pump safety Preparation for a site visit In addition to most state and federal laws, most site operations, irrespective of size, will have their own site-specic safety and site access rules. And many of them are drug, alcohol and smoking free. It is normal to be tested at gatehouse security for drugs and alcohol prior to entry, particularly on high-risk sites such as mining and petrochemical manufacturing operations.

It is good practice to hold a ‘white card’ (or general construction Induction card) in NSW or its equivalent in other states as well as a senior rst aid certicate. Companies will usually have their own induction programs. These can be a short lm with a quiz at the end, a guided site visit, a one-day course specic to the company, or a site allowing unaccompanied site visits – usually for contractors – for longer periods (i.e. up to a year). Prior to visiting site to complete a pump installation, PPE (personal protection equipment) should always be your rst consideration. As a minimum, this usually involves: a. Hard hat (ensure its within expiry date and nil damage – if you drop it, replace it) b. Steel-capped boots (consider acid and static-resistant soles along with zipped high sides for ankle protection, support and easier removal) c. Hearing protection (earmus or disposable earplugs – make sure they are the correct rating for task) d. Long sleeves and long pants with reective stripes e. Fluorescent coloured safety vest with reective stripes f. Leather gloves including carrying grip for your belt g. Eye protection (safety glasses or shield) h. Face mask or respirator Always check with the appropriate site contact what PPE is required for the visit.

Hazards of pump installations (safety is everyone’s responsibility) Pumps have multiple potential hazards to bear in mind: Moving parts: Pumps have many rotating or reciprocating components such as shafts, pulleys, fans, impellers, drive belts, drive chains and couplings. Even when guarded or shielded correctly, this presents amputation and/or entanglement risks. Australian standard AS4024:2019 exists for the safeguarding of pumps. Electricity: The most common method of driving a pump is via an electric motor. These can be quite small, for instance 0.25kW and 240V or much larger at over 1500kW and 415V. Some power station cooling pumps could have four motors totalling 18MW with an 11,000V

power supply. Correct electric circuit switchboard isolation, lockout and tagging procedures are critical to safety and must be followed – planning and approval musty be obtained from site personnel. All the correct approvals and certications for the electrical system should be obtained from the appropriate state authorities. This is critical for the operational safety of the plant. High pressures: When in operation, pump casings contain elevated pressure, and these should always be considered highly hazardous. The same can be said of discharge pipework. Extreme care should be taken when moving around pumps and pipework when they are in operation. While it is rare for a pump casing to blow, this could be catastrophic – pipeline ange gasket failure is far more common. Regardless of whether a pump is in operation, never stand on any pipework. High temperatures: Pumps are also used to transport hot liquids, meaning pumps and connected pipework can be extremely hot to touch or be in proximity to. A pump casing or seal rupture when transporting hot liquid is extremely hazardous and must be avoided. Corrosive liquids: Pumps are also used to transport highly corrosive chemicals. Special pump materials and shaft sealing systems are used to facilitate pumping these liquids and extreme care needs to be taken when working and operating these pumps. Specialised PPE may need to be worn including appropriate corrosion-resistant elastomeric safety boots and overalls that include gloves. Dangerous and toxic chemicals: Pumps can transport and handle highly dangerous and toxic chemicals. To ensure the safety of personnel, the public and property, special sealing systems and/or specialised pumps should be employed, and the precautions outlined for corrosive liquids followed. Biohazards: Wastewater treatment plants, for example, can have airborne viruses and contaminated surfaces. Following site-specic hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing and obtaining the recommended immunisations well in advance of visiting site, are critical.

Gas hazards and conned spaces: There are very specic rules, regulations and permits concerning entry into conned spaces that contain gas hazards such as carbon dioxide (CO2), sulphur dioxide (H2S) and carbon monoxide (CO). These are just three gases that can quickly render a person unconscious and can be fatal. Explosive and ammable liquids: Pumps handle many ammable liquids including petrol, diesel, and ethanol, however, many more ammable liquids exist. Therefore, liquids with complex chemical names should always be checked if they are ammable. Special specications and standards of construction exist for pumps handling these types of uids – API610 is one example. Strong jets of water and other uids: The strength of these should always be treated as if they are powerful enough to cause injury and should be handled accordingly. Strong vacuums: These can draw a person into a pipe intake or hold them below water. Never assume a vacuum is safe as many serious injuries and fatalities have occurred due to people getting caught by vacuums. Mechanical pipe loads: While this is poor practice due to shortened pump mechanical seal and bearing life, pipelines can often be incorrectly winched into position to connect to a suction or discharge outlet. Always be mindful that pipes, when disconnected, may spring and swing out of place, which can be highly hazardous. Turbulence, aeration and buoyancy: Many processes involve the pumping of heavily aerated uid, such as a heavily aerated sewage treatment process. Even with a life vest, you will not oat in these uids. Always work in pairs and wear a safety harness when undertaking such work. Noise: Environmental and safety regulations exist around the sound output of machinery, measured in decibels. Pumps are often noisy due to reective sound, particularly in an enclosed space and when surrounded by other noisy equipment. Now that we can safely operate in the pumphouse, the next instalment of the Pump Handbook will focus on the actual operation and maintenance.

IP66 versions available for exposed or rooftop installations. • Maintenance-Friendly Bearings: Grease relief system on larger frames (from D180) allows re-greasing during operation; sealed-for-life bearings minimise service on smaller units.

INDUSTRY CAPABILITY GUIDE

Sharpen your expertise From pump installation to commissioning, operation and maintenance, this PIA resource has it all.

P

ump Industry Australia (PIA) has produced a new resource that targets a critical gap in the market for standardised, practical guidance across the pump lifecycle. The rst chapter of Installation, Commissioning, Operation and Maintenance for Pumps (ICOM) covers pump installation, beginning with the OH&S aspects of the work, foundation construction, and the transport and storage of pumps to and at site. It then details the erection, levelling and grouting of the pumpset followed by the installation of the associated pipework and the coupling alignment to prepare for the initial pump start. An installation check list is included in the booklet’s appendices. Having installed the pump set, the next section covers pump commissioning, such as preparation tips, i.e. personnel needed for the process, tools and documents required for commissioning. The commissioning process is then described in detail followed by ways of evaluating commissioning, including any troubleshooting required. A comprehensive troubleshooting guide is

included in the booklet’s appendices. The pump site testing section explains why a commissioning run and its results cannot be considered a pump site test. A commissioning check list and samples of both electric-driven and engine-driven commissioning reports are included in the booklet’s appendices. The nal chapter of the booklet covers a pump’s operation and maintenance requirements once it has been installed and commissioned. The initial part of this section covers pump safety – an especially important consideration when working with rotating machinery – the pump house environment, and what liquids are pumped. The next part of this chapter covers pump operation and the normal operational requirements after a pumpset has been commissioned. This is followed by pump maintenance and the need for both routine and preventive maintenance, with the latter split into monthly, quarterly and annual maintenance schedules. In an environment where improper installation and misalignment remain leading contributors to premature

pump failure, unplanned downtime and increased maintenance costs, PIA has positioned this guide as a tool to drive improved asset reliability and whole-oflife performance. By reinforcing correct practices at the installation and commissioning stages, the booklet supports reduced lifecycle costs and enhanced operational eciency for end users. The publication also presents a broad market opportunity for pump suppliers and OEMs, who can incorporate the booklet as a standard documentation resource with equipment supply. This not only promotes best-practice alignment across projects but also strengthens aftersales support and risk mitigation for clients. Priced at $16.50 (including GST and postage), with discounted rates available for PIA members, the booklet oers a cost-eective resource for organisations seeking to improve installation quality, standardisation and long-term pump performance.
