Actually, visitors to the ITS World Congress 2019, being held from 21-25 October at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre, won’t have to do too much imagining the future of mobility: much of it will be here. And not just within the Congress programme, but in the host city itself.

On the roads, Singapore deployed its ERP (electronic road pricing) traffic management system, a world first, back in 1998, to address road congestion. The Singapore Changi Airport is a major aviation hub in Asia, and as a maritime centre, Singapore is the world’s busiest port in shipping tonnage, with over 1,000 vessels calling at the port at any one time.
In all forms of transport and mobility, Singapore is a stand out world leader and innovator. And this 26th Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress 2019 from 21 to 25 October at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre, will be a stand out event in every way.

Opening ceremony
In keeping with tradition, the opening ceremony, on Monday, 21 October from 16:00-17:00, will start with the official welcome by the organisers, Land Transport Authority of Singapore and ITS Singapore, along with co-hosts representing AsiaPacific, Americas and Europe.

Conference programme
The ITS World Congress Singapore will feature a comprehensive programme of Plenary sessions, dedicated to key ITS issues; Executive sessions, where high-level industry executives, public officials and academia from around the world will draw from their experiences to share their views on ITS achievements, issues and challenges; as well as Special Interest sessions, Commercial Paper sessions; Technical/ Scientific sessions; and Ancillary events.
This packed programme will comprehensively cover critical ITS topics including intelligent and connected autonomous vehicles, multi-modal transport, demand management, policies, standards, security and sustainability, through close to 200 speaking sessions.
New additions to this year’s Congress include an Asia-Pacific Regional Stream (organised to cover various topics that are especially relevant for the Asia-Pacific region) and the C-Level Forum on Mobility Solutions for Smart Cities, a platform for companies to share solutions that can enable cities to improve the well-being of residents living or working there.
Youth Programme
An eight-day Youth Leadership Development Programme has been designed to arouse the awareness of tertiary students with respect to advanced intelligent transport technologies and concepts and inspire their creative and innovative ideas that solve real ITS problems.
Participants will be engaging and mingling with entrepreneurs, investors and business leaders from the ITS industry.
Mentorship for ideas and professional training will also be conducted during the programme, which will provide young leaders with an excellent platform to showcase their creative ideas and work together in groups in an ideathon to address “Grand Challenge” topics.
The Youth leadership Development Programme is part of a schedule of nine ancilliary events being held during the congress, some of which are by invitation only.
Social Events
As mentioned above, following the opening ceremony, delegates can enjoy the Welcome Reception held at the exhibition hall which will provide an excellent opportunity to meet with peers from the industry and network with commercial partners and exhibitors.

How does Singapore stay on top of the game amidst rising transportation demands and changing mobility landscape? There are ample opportunities for delegates to find out by registering from a large programme of back-of-house tours designed to provide participants with knowledge and new perspectives on Singapore’s best-in-class transportation systems.

Demonstrations
The demonstration programme will bring together companies and organisations that are showcasing their developmental vehicles, systems and concepts, some of which are already on trial or are being test-bedded in Singapore.
They include autonomous vehicles (AV) demonstrations and rides – AV rides on closed circuits within the demonstration site; ITS vendor demonstrations, such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solution for cargo deliveries, V2X demonstrations, among others; and the static showcase featuring next-generation smart bus, passenger drone display and concept mock-ups, and much more.

Quantum leap for cyclist safety
Gridsmart will use the ITS World Congress to highlight a new software release, Version 19.3. The company says the new release delivers a quantum leap forward for cyclist safety, providing safe and adequate clearance time for cyclists to cross busy intersections. Version 19.3 protects cyclists where they are most vulnerable: it sees cyclists into, and all the way through, the intersection and responds with green extensions based on their real-time actions. As the company points out, its system doesn’t cater to the slowest common denominator or guess how long a cyclist might take to clear an intersection. Green time is saved for cyclists that quickly clear the intersection and increased for slower users who require an extension. According to Gridsmart, other vendors simply provide long green times whenever they think they see a cyclist at the stop-line. Long green times are not based on the individual cyclists or their path through the intersection, but on statistics meant to protect slower travellers. When every cyclist is treated as a statistic, green time is wasted for faster cyclists, and the slowest riders might be put in harm’s way.

IRD tyre sensors for safety and tolling
International Road Dynamics (IRD) is presenting two systems powered by the company’s VectorSense tyre sensor technology at this year’s ITS World Congress Singapore –the AACT and TACS.
AACT (Advanced Axle Classification for Toll) is a new system that provides more accurate single/dual tyre classification for tolling. It uses the tyre footprint information from the VectorSense sensors to provide detailed, real-time axle information that enables more accurate class information and
verification of automatic vehicle classification (AVC).
TACS is an advanced screening technology that helps agencies to identify vehicles with tyre problems before accidents occur. It identifies vehicles with tyre anomalies – such as flat, missing or mismatched tyres – at highway speed. These anomalies can result in vehicle imbalance, reduced manoeuvrability, improper load distribution, reduced braking performance, poor fuel economy, and reduced tyre life.
Several enforcement agencies
have successfully integrated TACS into their commercial vehicle e-screening systems and inspection programmes to identify vehicles with unsafe tyre conditions. IRD says these agencies have found TACS
Cubic innovations and NextCity vision
Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) will be on the ITS Australia Pavilion at the ITS World Congress with innovations including its artificial intelligenceenabled Virtual Ticket Agent; the Cubic Transport Management Platform; in-vehicle messaging for connected cars; Trafficware’s ATMS central traffic management system; and Synchro traffic analysis software.
More widely, Cubic will highlight at the event how its NextCity vision is another step closer to reality following the strategic acquisitions of Trafficware and Gridsmart, which will have its own stand at the event. Aimsun Live technology trial in Singapore is complete
The Aimsun team will be showcasing Aimsun Live, the decision support system for realtime traffic management that’s at the heart of the Land Transport Authority of Singapore (LTA) technology trial for a real-time traffic simulation and predictive system.
Recently completed, the 12-month trial evaluated how Aimsun Live’s traffic simulationbased solutions and prediction
capabilities can assist LTA in managing Singapore’s traffic conditions faster and more effectively.
The integrated system will support decision-making related to current and future traffic challenges by predicting nearfuture traffic conditions and then simulating the impact of different traffic response plans to recommend the best plan for implementation.
The system uses traffic data to automatically adjust the traffic demands to accurately simulate the ongoing recorded demand situation and support historical event evaluation as well as study the impact of future modes of transportation.
This is also the first system to link Aimsun Live to SCATSIM in Singapore to emulate the actual adaptive traffic signal control of the SCATS system; this link
will provide a more accurate representation of the real-time traffic signal operations.
Looking ahead to future transport options, this trial has incorporated connected and autonomous vehicles in a mixed-behaviour environment and demonstrates the future possibilities of driverless vehicles in the Singapore network.

Swarco, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, will be part of the Austrian Pavilion at the ITS World Congress Singapore.

Parifex to unveil Nano sensing solution
French engineering firm Parifex will use the ITS World Congress Singapore to unveil its latest innovation - Nano, a data collection system based on 3D lidar technology. The device is the company’s latest sensing solution for ITS, advanced traffic management, vehicle profiling, speed enforcement, and many other applications.
This ultra-light and compact lidarbased equipment combines several functionalities, resulting in rapid, continuous and accurate detection and ranging at 360°. Indeed, Nano detects all static and moving objects, including pedestrians, cyclist and vehicles. It can
track and gather all of the following information for each target in real-time: dimensions, direction, speed, distance, classification. As the company points out, with these capabilities, the possibilities are endless.
Nano can monitor multiple spots at a time, such as a large area of a parking lot; it can be used in enforcement if equipped with licence plate detection or vehicle type recognition and can be used for other ITS purposes such as surveillance and traffic management in smart city initiatives.

Applications and SmartSensor technology
SmartSensors are the focus of the Wavetronix stand at the ITS World Congress Singapore. Delegates will see how a variety of applications can be used in conjunction with SmartSensor technology to solve difficult traffic problems.
The Smart Sensor HD uses dual radar beams to create a speed trap. In addition, HD is able to determine the direction of travel, vital for applications such as reversible lanes and wrong-way detection and so much more.
SmartSensor Matrix sees every vehicle at the intersection, moving or stopped within its field of view. It remembers their positions and can predict future movements for up to 10 lanes of

TTS to showcase Personal Signal Assistant IaaS
Traffic Technology Services (TTS), a global information service provider for connected-vehicle (CV) applications, will showcase its Personal Signal Assistant Information-as-a-Service (IaaS) product at the ITS World Congress Singapore. The company will also highlight how it advances CV applications across the globe with its leading customer, Audi.
Personal Signal Assistant has been deployed since 2016 with the introduction of Audi connect Traffic Light Information service in Las Vegas. In July 2019, Audi introduced the 'Traffic Light Information' feature to Europe with service in Ingolstadt, Germany.
TTS prepares raw traffic light data from government agencies via central systems; predicts operations in real-time; and transmits information to Audi servers. From there, the information
reaches the vehicle via a fast cellular Internet connection.
TTS information enables Audi vehicles to notify their drivers of waiting times at red lights or the ideal travel speed for reaching the next traffic light on green. Specifically, the CV applications include time-to-green (TTG), and green light optimised speed advisory (GLOSA). Additional CV applications powered by the TTS service will be released over the next couple years, laying the groundwork for future piloted and automated operations.

Gewi solves AD major challenge
Many challenges need to be overcome to realise the benefits of automated driving (AD). One of the biggest is to ensure that changes in road conditions due to construction, weather or events are properly recognised by the vehicle, to ensure the proper automated driving response.

Road Zipper success in Asia
Lindsay Transportation Systems will be at the ITS World Congress to highlight the success of its Road Zipper system in Asia.
In 2016, a tragic accident in a construction zone on the Joban Expressway running north from Tokyo, Japan, resulted in the death of a construction worker when a vehicle passed through the plastic delineation separating workers from vehicles. To complete the project and prevent additional fatalities or work zone encroachments, Nexco, the company responsible for all Japan’s tolled expressways, assessed the Road Zipper System. It quickly installed two kilometres of the moveable barrier throughout the project. There were no further vehicle encroachments into the work zone during the project.

Syntony GNSS sends GPS underground
France-headquartered Syntony GNSS will use the ITS World Congress Singapore to highlight SubWave, which enables the localisation of any equipment with a standard GPS chipset by expanding coverage to underground areas.
By emitting a perfect emulation of the “real” GPS, SubWave can benefit subway operators and the public in all underground places equipped with the system, including stations and tunnels. It allows clients to keep track of their assets in such confined areas, with the same apps they use outside, as long as they rely on GPS signal.

Currently there are two leased construction Barrier Transfer Machines (BTM) in operation on a number of projects as well as two more BTMs which Nexco decided to purchase. The system allows as much capacity to be used by the road-using public in the correct direction during peak travel times – and then expanding the work zone during off-peak times to allow more production construction methods leading to improved safety, reduced congestion, cost savings and faster construction programmes.
