Mapping the future

As the industry continues to celebrate recent successes, the upcoming PNG Expo sits at the fore of these continuing conversations of collaboration and connection.

WELCOME TO the June/July edition of PNG Mining, an issue that looks beyond recent wins to where the industry is heading next and the practical steps being taken to get there.

With the PNG Industrial and Mining Resources Exhibition and Conference (PNG Expo) fast approaching, attention turns to one of the sector’s most important annual meeting points. More than a showcase, PNG Expo is where ideas are tested, deals begin to take shape, and relationships are strengthened.

Yet the conversation is shifting. Increasingly, success is being measured not only in output, but in how effectively projects contribute to regional development, infrastructure and meaningful community engagement. These themes are front and centre in this year s conference program and reflect the maturing industry that is continuing to evolve.

In this edition, we also turn our attention to the people driving the sector forward, with Fortescue developing future leadership in Gavy Kambuaya, whose connection to PNG is influencing how the next generation approaches issues such as inclusion and engagement.

A PNG voice in mining leadership

Shaped by their Papua New Guinean and Melanesian heritage, Gavy Kambuaya’s journey through mining is as much about identity as it is about leadership.

GAVY KAMBUAYA’S journey through the mining industry is one defined by persistence, leadership and a deep connection to their Papua New Guinean and Melanesian heritage, which continues to shape their career and their approach to leadership at  ortescue.

A proud Papua New Guinean person with cultural ties spanning Papua New Guinea (PNG), West Papua in Indonesia and the Torres Strait, Kambuaya represents a growing cohort of leaders bringing diverse perspectives into Australia’s resources sector. ambuaya s story reflects not only professional progression but also the importance of cultural identity in an industry increasingly working alongside traditional landowners and communities.

A proud Papua New Guinean person, Kambuaya represents a growing cohort of leaders bringing diverse perspectives into Australia’s resources sector.

“I started with Fortescue on the tools as a carpenter in the non-process infrastructure department, very new to mining at the time,” they said.

“From the beginning, it was an environment where hard work and attitude were recognised, which helped me grow.

That environment enabled ambuaya to take on increasing levels responsibility. Over time, they moved through a range of operational and leadership roles, including step-up supervisor, operations supervisor and maintenance supervisor, before stepping into superintendent-level responsibilities.

A pivotal moment in Kambuaya’s development came through Fortescue’s emergency response team, where they took on the role of captain.

“A big part of my leadership journey was through the emergency response team. Leading the team, we were fortunate enough to win the mining emergency competition, including best captain,” Kambuaya said.

“That experience really shaped how I lead, including staying calm under pressure, looking after people and getting results as a team. found the most fulfilment in work when leading and influencing people.

Beyond professional growth, Kambuaya’s identity is deeply rooted in a rich cultural heritage that connects them strongly to PNG.

came from a Melanesian background that spans Nias Island on my mum’s side, and West Papua, Papua New Guinea, and the Torres Strait on my father’s side,” Kambuaya said.

Kambuaya’s lineage on their grandmother’s side traces back to the Star Mountains region of PNG, connecting them to highland communities as well as the Awin river people. These ancestral links represent historically embedded cultural networks.

Images: Fortescue

“That side of my family represented a connection between mountain and river people, inland tribes and coastal pathways, all part of a wider Melanesian network that existed long before modern borders,” Kambuaya said.

Much of Kambuaya’s understanding of their Papua New Guinean heritage came through their father, who was raised in Sorong and carried strong Melanesian cultural values.

“My grandad couldn’t read or write, and my dad was the first in our family to receive formal education, creating a new path for us,” Kambuaya said. verything know has been passed down through my dad, who was heavily influenced by Melanesian culture, values and community.”

Those values have remained central to their outlook.

“Growing up, my dad always told me that in life you can’t control what happens to you or the cards you’re dealt, but you can control how you respond,” they said.

Now in a leadership position as rail civil supervisor for Fortescue’s operations in Port Hedland, Western Australia, Kambuaya’s Papua New Guinean identity plays an important role in how they present at work and connects with others.

“I was proud of my journey and where I came from. t kept me grounded, they said. n mining, representation matters. A lot of the areas we work in are connected to strong cultures and communities, so it’s important people can see themselves reflected in roles, especially leadership.

t helps build trust, breaks down barriers and shows the next generation what’s possible.”

Kambuaya believes their success carries a greater responsibility.

was the first in my family to come out of poverty here in Australia, and didn t take that lightly,” they said.

“Every decision I made and every opportunity stepped into, felt like was representing my family, my people, and where I came from.”

Through Fortescue, Kambuaya has been able to align their cultural values with professional growth.

“It hasn’t just changed my life, it’s created generational change for me and my future family,” Kambuaya said.

Kambuaya’s continued push for development has seen them become part of Fortescue’s ‘CEO for a quarter’ initiative, providing them direct insight into how the company is run at the executive level, giving them a greater managerial experience.

t s given me exposure to how things work, from strategy and decision-making to how ortescue is thinking about the future of the industry through decarbonisation,” they said.

I’m proud of my journey and where I come from. It keeps me grounded.”

“It’s also pushed me out of my comfort one, especially speaking up more and being involved in those conversations.”

The global mining company has given Kambuaya a strong platform for growth, having invested in development from the very beginning of their career, with the focus now strongly on continuing to develop an operational management skillset grounded in the belief of strong representation.

want to keep empowering people, strengthening culture, and contributing to the positive impact ortescue is making across the business and the communities we work with, ambuaya said. PNG

Sandvik is helping mineral processing operations run smoothly and with greater efficiency with its new innovations in crushing and screening solutions.

MINING HAS been a cornerstone in the development of humanity for hundreds - if not thousands - of years, with the need for critical minerals now rapidly growing to meet global needs of carbon neutrality and a greener future.

With innovative new technologies changing the way these minerals are recovered, Sandvik is shining a light on the energy consumed in the comminution phase crushing, screening, feeding and milling and what can be done to be greener.

Statistics from the company show the mining industry is highly energy intensive, with direct consumption representing six to seven per cent of the world s total energy usage, with almost half of this energy consumed through comminution.

According to Sandivk rock processing business area president ichard arris, the company leverages digitalisation as a cornerstone of its innovation and cutting-edge technologies.

Not only is our latest equipment easy to operate, manage, maintain and service, but it also contributes to our industry s need to reduce its environmental impact, arris said.

“Through our close partnerships with customers and our unwavering focus on innovation, we are shaping a future where rock processing is ecoefficient, safe, productive and sustainable.

According to Sandvik s experts, about per cent of the mining industry s total energy consumption can be attributed to the grinding process, with crushing up to ten-times more energy efficient

than conventional grinding. By crushing more and providing a finer feed to the milling circuit, significant efficiency gains can be made in the overall comminution process.

The i cone crusher series reflects Sandvik s commitment to the continuous evolution of design, materials and technology. The latest models, integrated with the new ACS-c 5 automation system, combine robust mechanical design with powerful, user-friendly automation, supporting diverse operational needs.

According to Gold ields senior management, the finer feed from their new circuit improved downstream mill performance, increasing the maximum throughput rate from 155 to 170 tonnes per hour tph , with around per cent greater energy efficiency.

ike crushing, screening and feeding also play a critical role in mineral processing. ibrating screens and feeders operate in extremely harsh environments accelerating massive loads of highly abrasive materials with forces of up to G. ell adapted to the world s toughest mineral processing applications, Sandvik s line-up of heavy-duty vibrating screens, feeders and screening media includes machines capable of throughputs of up to , tph.

nsuring optimal screening efficiency often comes down to the right choice of equipment for the ob. hoosing the best time to replace screening media is a critical part of this process: replacing too early can be a waste of money but waiting too long can lead to process inefficiencies.

eckMapp is Sandvik s new digital platform for screen deck maintenance. The company said that this software solution could transform screen deck maintenance and drive substantial improvements in the efficiency and operational performance of mineral processing plants.

Accessible via laptop, tablet or mobile phone, eckMapp captures, stores and shares real-time data to present a reliable, single source of truth for all activities within the screen media lifecycle.

For Sandvik digital solutions product manager Matt  utbush, this new technology empowers teams like never before.

By guiding operators through maintenance updates and wear assessments, eckMapp ensures consistent data entry across the board, resulting in robust, reliable historical wear data for every screen in your operation, utbush said.

“DeckMapp enhances data quality and formalises maintenance processes, eliminating information inconsistencies that can adversely affect production and profitability.

A key feature of DeckMapp is the optional add-on earApp, a wear assessment system powered by artificial intelligence. ith earApp, users capture images of worn screening media panels with a smartphone or a tablet, which is assessed automatically for wear, efficiency and remaining wear life.

This application not only saves substantial time but also delivers far greater accuracy over traditional manual wear assessment methods, utbush said.

The Sandvik range of screens and feeders has been enhanced by a new generation of conidition monitoring system called A S-s, allowing operators to always keep an eye on the condition of their machines. A S-s is designed to alert plant personnel to small problems, before they can become big ones which is critical to maximising plant efficiency.

Solutions provided by Sandvik offer multi-faceted benefits, helping to reduce energy consumption, minimise waste and optimise operational efficiency. These advancements can assist mining operations to improve their environmental footprint while delivering outstanding performance. PNG

Proven partnership

Lincom Group and HBS Machinery have built a partnership in Papua New Guinea defined by reliable equipment, strong after-sales support and ongoing technical collaboration.

FOR MORE than a quarter of a century, the relationship between Lincom Group and BS Machinery has stood as a constant in Papua New Guinea s PNG demanding mining and construction sectors.

Built on trust, technical understanding and consistent after-sales support, the partnership continues to evolve, even as BS enters a new phase under the ownership of mining solutions provider Petrosea.

The Lincom–HBS relationship has always extended beyond the supply of equipment.

rom the earliest engagements, incom worked closely with HBS to understand the realities of operating in PNG, where logistics, terrain and infrastructure present unique challenges.

BS Machinery founder Bob atkins traced the connection back more than two decades, to his long-standing relationship with Lincom founder Roy atterson, with the pair first working together on machinery deliveries in Australia in the 1970s.

“Roy always developed a team that concentrated on not only selling machinery but fully understanding

HBS Machinery’s relationship with

atkins said. ou have got to understand exactly what you are going to put into it before you can work out what you need for the process.

A artnershi ro en in the fiel

This philosophy was put to the test in , when HBS formed a joint venture for the Hidden Valley pro ect in Morobe Province. Tasked with supplying a complete crusher circuit under tight deadlines, the company faced intense scrutiny from stakeholders concerned about delivery risk.

Through incom s direct involvement, a powerscreenbased solution was selected that was capable of producing road base, sealing aggregates, concrete materials and gabion stone, all within a -day window from order to production.

The challenges of the project extended beyond equipment specification, with machinery needing to be shipped internationally, transported across difficult terrain and installed on-site with minimal existing infrastructure.

At the time, infrastructure around the area wasn t as sophisticated as it is now, atkins said. So getting the equipment to site was about understanding the complex logistics of how to get a 40-something-tonne crusher on a boat, onto a truck, onto site. oy and the incom team dealt with it all.

ith incom s technical input and on-the-ground support, the pro ect met delivery and production targets. The durability of the equipment further reinforced the success of partnership, with key components exceeding , production hours before replacement.

ver time, the fleet at idden alley has been expanded with additional equipment from incom, including supplied circuits for road construction, airport developments and mining operations.

That track record continued in when BS secured work at the ihir mine, a contract it maintains today. incom s role has remained consistent, providing equipment and ongoing support to ensure operational continuity.

Upgrades to the crushing circuit recently got underway, with further changeouts scheduled through to .

The most recent chapter in the partnership reflects continuity and renewal. n the past year, incom delivered a new suite of equipment to BS under Petrosea, including a Powerscreen threedeck screen, a Maxtrak cone crusher and a PT aw crusher.

Alongside the machinery, incom personnel travelled to PNG to provide on-site training for operators,

reinforcing the company s long-standing commitment to workforce development.

Early projects supported by Lincom in PNG saw operations run almost entirely by Papua New Guinean workers, supported by targeted skills development programs to upskill operators.

atkins emphasised the importance of this type of approach.

“There is a lot of staff development and training involved, he said, highlighting how capabilitybuilding underpins sustainable operations in remote environments.

That emphasis on training and capability development is closely linked to the broader need for reliable, long-term operational support. or BS, the value of the partnership with incom lies in reliability as much as performance.

n a market where access to parts and expertise can be limited, dependable after sales-support is essential. ou would not consider taking on a pro ect unless you knew you had support, atkins said.

Equipment provided by Lincom exceeded 30,000 production hours before replacement in some instances.

ou do not take any process to PNG unless you have got good back-up and support, which is what we have with incom.

incom s ongoing engagement in the region, including regular site visits and participation in industry forums, has helped maintain that support.

The company s approach demonstrates a clear understanding that long-term success in PNG depends not only on equipment quality, but on partnership, presence and practical expertise.

incom s relationship with BS is a key example of how value can be delivered through technical collaboration and a shared commitment to supporting operations on the ground. PNG

Conveyor certainty

Belt Wise managing director Beau Weiss discusses why Papua New Guinea is at the top of his priorities for growth and opportunity.

FROM GOLD and copper to agricultural commodities, Papua New Guinea's (PNG) mining industry relies heavily on conveyors, loaders, specialised vehicles and material handling systems to keep product moving from pit to port.

While the need for bulk handling infrastructure is undeniable, the market has long lacked something just as critical: local on-the-ground expertise.

That gap in direct expertise was a key driver behind Belt Wise’s decision to establish a dedicated division in PNG.

Belt Wise is a specialist provider of conveyor optimisation, engineering and material handling solutions that are designed to improve performance, reliability and efficiency across industrial operations.

Managing director Beau Weiss said the move to create a PNG division was both professional and deeply personal.

“My family, going back two generations, have been working in the mining sector in PNG and my father was raised there,” Weiss told PNG Mining

“Professionally, I’ve always been involved with the PNG market, so it became imperative for us to specifically branch out there and continue to develop our service and capabilities there. That was a key focus.

While many bulk handling companies seek competitive advantage through new technologies or proprietary systems, eiss said Belt ise identified a more fundamental opportunity by being present.

“From a conveyor perspective, there has historically been limited conveyor-specialist presence based in PNG permanently,” Weiss said.

“All of them work from afar. Direct, on-site involvement is pretty much non-existent.”

Belt Wise’s on-the-ground staff in PNG help to further develop business. A country manager and business development manager mean fingers remain on the pulse with operations, ensuring Belt ise can provide better services in real time.

“They’re heavily involved with the community and they know the ins and outs of operating there,” Weisssaid.

“No one else in this sector, especially those working from afar, is utilising nationals to that extent.”

The company also invests heavily in skills development, particularly in conveyor belt splicing and conveyor management.

These are areas where local training opportunities are often limited, stunting the potential for greater progression.

Local expertise has been cited as a key differentiator for Belt Wise.

Expanded opportunities

Beyond the logistical imperatives that attracted Weiss to PNG, the abundance of opportunities in an ever-expanding market also held significant appeal.

With growth seen across the industry – from K92 Mining's record production to Ok Tedi accelerating electrification across estern Province eiss has seen the possibility for even greater involvement.

“PNG’s mining industry is a relatively moderate market, but the sky really is the limit with what’s possible across the sector.”

“When you look at the demand for gold and the quality of resource in PNG, the industry sits at the forefront of changing the game when it comes to exploration and mineral processing.”

Operating out of Port Moresby and Lae, Belt Wise is well positioned to continue serving the industry.

“We’ve partnered with a large company in-country to support the holding of stock, who already work with major mine sites across the region,” Weiss said.

In addition, work is already underway with a major mine in PNG to support logistical improvements in bulk handling operations, with equipment optimisation and training already completed.

As Belt Wise expands its footprint, the company’s ambition is to become the go-to conveyor and materials handling specialist in PNG.

“We’re looking forward to furthering ourselves and the market over there,” Weiss said.

“If we can bring innovation and expertise into PNG, and do it in a way that benefits both industry and community, then that’s a win for everyone.” PNG

Belt Wise has a dedicated PNG-based team to help continue company growth.

Pacific-built success

What started as a three-year work move for Paul Wyld turned into the basis for Procureit Australia, which is now celebrating more than 20 years in business.

SOMETIMES, IT’S the smallest ideas that grow to be the biggest. What began with Paul Wyld’s background in shed construction in Australia has since evolved into a major industrial supply business shaped by opportunities, training and personal ties in Papua New Guinea PNG .

Procureit Australia, founded by Wyld in 2003, is continuing to grow how maintenance, repair and operation M equipment is supplied across the Asia-Pacific region.

Procureit delivers industrial and commercial procurement solutions across Australasia and the Pacific, specialising in PNG s remote mining sites. Leveraging local expertise and global supplier networks, it provides more than 3000 brands, optimising supply chains, reducing costs, and ensuring operations run smoothly despite challenging logistics and infrastructure.

As the company celebrates the historic milestone of over 20 years in business, Wyld sat down with PNG Mining to look back at what got the company to this point and how PNG itself continues to play a pivotal part in how business is conducted.

When Wyld was offered an opportunity to relocate to PNG in 1994 as part of his role in bearing and power transmissions sales, he initially expected it to last ust a few years.

Procureit was founded by Paul Wyld in 2003 to help supply equipment to the Pacific.

But the move would shape more than a decad of his career and lay the foundation for his future business.

Based in Lae, Wyld played a key role in setting up branches for his then-employer, driving sales and travelling extensively to remote regions.

The experience provided him with a deep understanding of the logistical and cultural challenges of operating in the Pacific, as well as the importance of building long-term relationships.

“I lived in PNG when I was 25, so I spent a good part of my youth in the country, learning the culture and making friends that has ultimately paid dividends now,” Wyld said. “These long-term friends have allowed me to create a really strong base of connections.

t was also during this time that yld got a firsthand sense of the Pacific nation.

“I was travelling to remote mine sites regularly, [including] Lihir, Porgera, Tabubil,” he said.

“You really got to understand the country on the ground. It’s a harsh and challenging environment, but it’s also incredibly rewarding There aren’t many people with long tenure in PNG; it takes a certain mindset to stick with it.

Armed with this local knowledge and a degree in purchasing and materials management, Wyld was able to develop the insights that would later underpin the creation of Procureit, recognising gaps in the supply of industrial MRO products across the region.

But his story in PNG isn’t just a professional one. Wyld has a deep connection to the country.

“I met my wife Ces when we were working at the same company,” he said. “She’s from a small town south of Milne Bay. We’ve got two beautiful daughters who are 14 and 19 and we regularly travel back to visit family. We’re pretty much tied to the country – and we love it.”

A defining feature of Procureit s success has been a strong connection to the Pacific right across the company.

Around half of the company is fluent in Tok Pisin, one of the major languages in PNG, enabling effective communication and a deeper understanding of local business environments.

“Our team understand the nuances of problems and communication styles in PNG, meaning we can interpret these exact concerns into actionable insights, and we can give advice on what works best for them,” Wyld said.

Today, Procureit provides the Australasian and Pacific regions with access to more than 3000 domestic and global brands and a catalogue of equipment.

Continuing growth across the Asia-Pacific

Strategically located close to Brisbane International Airport, parts can be supplied promptly in urgent scenarios, while larger items can be shipped from the Port of Brisbane.

All of this is backed by over 100 years of combined experience across the team, with members having worked and lived in PNG in the past, ensuring a tailored experience in solving areaspecific challenges.

e understand specific ways of working, living, negotiating, aren’t always considered when dealing with businesses in the Pacific region, yld said. “We never take these on face value and utilise our knowledge of the country to make sure we’re providing the relevant support.”

Looking ahead, Procureit is boosting its position in the market with the launch of e-commerce platform Industrial Source, giving operators and procurement specialists access to over 1.2 million pieces of MRO equipment from brands in Australia and the S.

Left: Wyld regularly returns to PNG, strengthening his connection with the country.

Middle: Wyld has direct experience working in PNG, originally travelling for a threeyear work move.

Wyld and his wife Ces have two daughters that are connected to their Papua New Guinean heritage.

This extensive portal will be on display at the PNG Industrial and Mining Resources Exhibition and onference PNG xpo in Port Moresby in  uly.

Procureit will provide delegates with a window into one of the world’s largest digital MRO catalogues, highlighting the company's continued growth.

More than two decades on two from its founding, the company s growth reflects the same principle that first took yld to PNG opportunity in the Pacific rewards those who invest time to understand it. PNG

From consumables to capability

Australasian Mining Services offers on-site technical drill support, backed by coaches with decades of experience in Papua New Guinea.

AUSTRALASIAN MINING Services (AMS) sits in a unique position in the drilling supply chain, both manufacturing consumables and working alongside crews in the field. This combination is most critical in remote environments such as in Papua New Guinea (PNG), where logistics, downtime and ground variability directly impact production.

With more than 20 years’ experience, AMS supports operations with drill consumables, technical expertise and on-site coaching designed to keep rigs turning. This approach has been applied extensively across several Australian projects where remote access and supply delays place pressure on drilling continuity and can be extended to operations across the broader Pacific region.

AMS has the resources to embed drill coaches on site, some with decades of experience across African and PNG operations. These specialists work directly with crews to improve performance in real time through air system testing, drill bit wear analysis and drill string monitoring. The focus is practical and helps improve penetration rates, reduce drill damage and limit unplanned downtime.

At a large iron ore project in the Pilbara, Western Australia, a dedicated drill coaching program delivered a 10 per cent productivity uplift, driven by higher penetration rates, reduced drill damage and extended consumable life. The gains were achieved through optimisation of existing equipment rather than changes in fleet or rig capability.

This field support is backed by AMS engineering teams who work directly with site crews to adapt tools to specific and often highly variable ground conditions. A key service is the company’s rapid design iteration capability, allowing new bit

geometries, materials and configurations to be developed, trialled and refined quickly in response to live drilling performance.

This compresses what is typically a long original equipment manufacturer (OEM) product development cycle into a short field-to-engineering feedback loop. When issues such as premature bit wear, vibration instability or formation-related damage occur, designs can be adjusted and redeployed on site in short timeframes rather than waiting for standard product release cycles.

Drilling in high-silica formations, for example, identified excessive gauge row wear on tricone bits, reducing performance and bit life. AMS engineering responded with a redesigned gauge configuration and improved wear protection. The updated bit was developed, trialled and redeployed in under four weeks, delivering approximately a 20 per cent increase in bit life.

This approach shifts consumables from static products to evolving tools, with each iteration informed by field performance data. The result is closer alignment between engineering design and ground conditions, improving reliability and consumable performance over successive runs.

Structured consumable performance analysis underpins this model, linking usage data to drilling outcomes and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.

With supply hubs in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia, AMS aligns inventory with demand, but its core value in PNG lies beyond logistics. By combining manufacturing, field support and rapid engineering iteration, AMS focuses on one outcome: putting performance back into drilling. PNG

AMS supports the mining industry with training as well as drilling equipment.

Waste by design

Trade waste management is increasingly key to achieving productivity across Papua New Guinea’s remote mining operations, with ACO Halgan at the forefront of solutions.

WITH MINING operations in Papua New Guinea often based in remote locations with self-contained camp infrastructure, trade waste management –although sometimes overlooked – is proving to be a core component of site functionality.

ACO Halgan has built its position in this space over three decades by supplying application-specific equipment designed to manage trade waste streams at source, including grease traps, oil water separators, septic tanks and pump stations for demanding operating environments.

“ACO Halgan is a household name within the trade waste and industrial water management community. If you look at any trade waste application, you’d be hard pressed to find something that doesn t have our name on it,” a company spokesperson told PNG Mining.

The company’s focus is not on preventative systems, but on essential infrastructure that enables sites to operate effectively.

In mining camps, workshops, kitchens and processing areas, wastewater must be handled reliably and in compliance with operational requirements.

This creates a need for robust, fit-for-purpose equipment, especially with operations across PNG often located in hard-to-reach, isolated areas.

ACO Halgan's product range is designed and engineered in accordance with the Australian and New Zealand quality standards, broadly accepted across PNG and the APAC region. Solutions can be installed above or below ground, giving operations greater flexibility.

In PNG’s mining regions, where projects are often located far from established utilities, these systems provide a practical means of managing trade waste and wastewater from accommodation camps and amenities blocks.

Proprietary grease traps are used to intercept and separate fats, oils and grease from wastewater generated in commercial kitchens.

ACO Halgan supplies application-specific equipment designed to manage trade waste streams at source.

In mining operations, where large workforces rely on centralised catering facilities, grease management is critical to maintaining downstream system performance.

A defining feature of A algan s offering is its emphasis on application-specific design. ather than a one-si e-fits-all approach, products are developed to suit particular use cases.

The use of colour coding for performance identification is part of this system, allowing operators and installers to readily distinguish between product types and specifications.

For mining companies operating in PNG, logistics are another critical consideration. ACO Halgan’s established freight pathways to locations such as Perth and Brisbane demonstrate its capability to manage containerised shipments, a model that can be extended to PNG pro ects.

“We handle all of the shipping and logistical complexities and also work with our customers shipping agents to provide the most cost-effective solutions” the spokesperson said.

The business is now part of the ACO Group, an international organisation with more than 60 years of experience and significant global scale, turning over $2 billion annually. This transition provides additional support and access to broader expertise, positioning A algan to extend its reach beyond its traditional domestic international export market.

A algan s experience, product range and logistical capability place it as a supplier aligned with these requirements, delivering equipment that supports the essential, if often unseen, aspects of mine site performance. PNG

Blasting innovation milestone

After spending more than two decades innovating blast solutions, Orica is celebrating its Electronic Blasting Systems standing the test of time.

ORICA MINING Services is marking 25 years since the introduction of its Electronic Blasting Systems (EBS), a milestone that traces the development of one of the company’s most established technologies and its role in modern mining operations.

First deployed in 2000, Orica’s i-kon system introduced programmable electronic detonators designed to improve control over blast timing and sequencing. Since then, more than 200 million units have been used globally across surface and underground mining, as well as quarrying, tunnelling and construction.

This anniversary reflects both technical progress – seen through product innovation – and industry collaboration for Orica, with the company emphasising the role of customers and site teams in shaping how EBS has been applied and refined across different operating environments, contributing to its adoption at scale.

Precision and control

EBS forms part of a wider suite of initiating technologies but is distinguished by its use of programmable detonators. This allows engineers to assign precise delay times to individual holes, providing a level of control that is difficult to achieve with traditional systems.

The ability to test each detonator before firing is another defining feature, enabling crews to confirm system integrity before a blast proceeds.

Orica’s i-kon range has been developed to operate across varied conditions, from open-cut mines to underground operations. Its design supports consistent performance while allowing flexibility in blast configuration.

As mines contend with increasingly complex geotechnical environments, the reliability of initiation systems has become a critical consideration, particularly where ground conditions and water can affect performance.

The progression of EBS has also included the introduction of wireless initiation through WebGen. By removing the need for physical connections, wireless systems enable different approaches to blast design and sequencing, with implications for how sites manage access and exposure.

Building on a 25-year foundation

While the anniversary highlights the longevity of i-kon, it also marks a transition point in how Orica is approaching initiation technology, with recent developments including the EBS Neo range, which removes lead from detonators in both manufacturing and use.

The company is also focused on integrating digital capability into its systems, aligning initiation technology more closely with broader mine planning and operational processes.

Orica is in the early stages of introducing i-kon Digital to customers, a solution designed to digitise bench operations, with GPS guided navigation enabling simpler, more efficient data capture and faster troubleshooting.

Orica describes the progression from i-kon to newer platforms as part of an ongoing development pathway rather than a fixed endpoint.

As the company marks 25 years of EBS, the milestone serves as a record of adoption and a reference point for further development.

The focus now remains on refining how blasts are designed and executed, in line with the operational demands facing mining operations today. PNG

Mining’s value test

DEKA Dynamics is helping mining operations across the Pacific region improve capabilities in the boardroom to make better, more informed decisions that create greater value.

AS PROJECTS across Papua New Guinea (PNG) grow in scale, so too must its workforce. Technical prowess is becoming more important than ever, whilst operations also look to tighten capital and forecast environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives.

In this rapidly-changing landscape in the Pacific, the ability to value a mineral pro ect is now becoming the industry’s most important discipline in exposing uncertainty early through honest and quantitative outcomes.

As it looks to strengthen capabilities within Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) mining sector through tailored workshops and training modules, DEKA Dynamics is helping solve this precise problem. Managing director Dennis Kattowitz told PNG Mining that to assist decision makers in PNG better understand the fundamentals of mineral project valuations, external support can go a long way.

A workshop in the Valuation of Mineral Projects will be held in Port Moresby by DEKA Dynamics to coincide with the PNG Industrial and Mining Resources Exhibition and Conference (PNG Expo) in July, hosted by Professor Steven Rupprecht of the University of  ohannesburg.

Sessions provide attendees with research-based, example-led training on how analysis of data can be just as valuable as what’s coming out of the ground.

Why valuation Is the real test of discipline

For Kattowitz, valuation is too often treated as latestage financial exercise instead of being at the centre of mining project lifecycles. This, he said, is often dusted off once engineers have finished their designs and geologists have drawn their boundaries.

“Projects do not fail because spreadsheets are wrong; they fail because assumptions are not challenged early enough,” Kattowitz said.

At its core, it’s valuation that forces integration, compelling geologists and mining engineers to speak a common language value.

“Technical excellence without economic context is ust as dangerous as financial modelling detached from

operational reality. True project understanding lies at the intersection of the two,” Kattowitz said.

The danger, however, lies in the risk of getting it wrong and potentially destroying shareholder value with over-optimistic price forecasts.

Underestimated capital costs, poorly understood operating risks and inadequate consideration of infrastructure and ESG obligations have derailed many developments that looked attractive on paper.

“The cost of getting valuation wrong is not abstract, it manifests as stranded capital, impaired assets, and lost credibility with investors,” Kattowitz said.

“Understanding the time value of money, discount rates, and risk adjusted returns is not merely an academic exercise. Metrics such as Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, and payback periods are key decision making tools.”

The balance between potential and reality

A mineral project’s value is inseparable from how it will be financed. ebt and equity each impose different constraints on risk, cash flow and control.

Lenders focus on downside protection and robustness, whilst equity investors seek upside leverage.

Early stage projects, in particular, can suffer when valuation is approached as a theoretical exercise.

“Markets do not fund resources, they fund credible development pathways. Understanding how valuation evolves from exploration results through scoping, pre feasibility, and feasibility studies allows proponents to align technical work with capital market expectations,” Kattowitz said.

The Valuation of Mineral Projects session will be hosted by Professor Steven Rupprecht.

“This is where sensitivity analysis becomes indispensable. By stress testing assumptions like commodity prices, recoveries, costs, timelines, valuation moves from prediction to preparation. It identifies which variables matter most and where management attention should be focused.”

How can this be done in a way that boosts standards, credibility and discipline ormal valuation frameworks across PNG s industry could be the answer.

“These frameworks emphasise transparency, appropriate methodology selection, and consistency between technical inputs and valuation outputs.

is helping mining operations across the Pacific region improve capabilities in the boardroom.

Whether applying income based approaches, market comparisons, or cost based methods, credibility hinges on matching the method to the project’s level of confidence and maturity, attowit said.

With capital for many projects globally constrained, Kattowitz noted, disciplined valuation can be seen as a competitive advantage.

Valuation as a Strategic Capability

In mineral projects valuations, the most underappreciated aspect is the role of strategic capability. Those that embed this into valuation processing can make decision more rapidly with greater information to hand.

“They recognise early when to advance, partner, pause or walk away. They understand that value is not created at discovery, but through disciplined development choices over time,” Kattowitz said.

In mining, knowing what something is worth –and why – remains the most powerful tool in an operation s arsenal. PNG

Data-driven safety

CleanSpace Technology is helping mine operators breathe easy, directly tackling respiratory issues with more than years of experience in the field.

ACROSS MINE sites in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the wider Pacific region, remote operations bring unique challenges for respiratory protection. igh altitude, dust content and underground operations are daily obstacles that need to be overcome.

CleanSpace Technology is tackling this issue head-on, using real-time insights to move respiratory protection from a static control measure to an active, data-driven safety system.

The company has been responding to health concerns going as far back as the SARS epidemic in 2003, with this experience helping CleanSpace identify the need for a lightweight, easy-to-wear respirator that provides maximum protection for frontline workers.

This resulted in the production of its reliable and comfortable powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs), which are now trusted by workers in more than  countries.

CleanSpace solutions are distributed in PNG by Blackwoods, an Australia-based supplier of industrial, safety and personal protective equipment (PPE), who have supported customers across the Pacific for more than years.

Blackwoods deliver export capabilities tailored to each customer’s needs, backed by industry-leading PPE, tools, safety solutions and technical expertise to support safer, more efficient operations.

The company’s tailored export model helps manage inventory, meet project deadlines, reduce costs and protect people on site. Through faster cargo clearances and strong trading partner arrangements, Blackwoods

ensures the delivery of what mine sites need, when they need it.

istorically, mine operators have relied on periodic assessments and manual checks to monitor respiratory safety. This approach, while functional, often provided only a snapshot of conditions.

CleanSpace’s latest innovation, Insights Reporting, is designed to close that gap by capturing continuous, real-world data directly from its PAP s.

“For a long time, respiratory protection data focused on ha ards and exposure limits. That information is still critical, but we’re now seeing a real push toward gathering continual data on how equipment is actually used in real working conditions,” CleanSpace director of commercial solutions udith augh said.

The system builds on the company’s SMART app, which provides real-time readings, but extends its capability by synchronising data to the cloud and converting it into comprehensive reports.

These reports offer a detailed view of respirator usage, including operating hours, filter performance and protection levels, allowing mine sites to track not ust compliance, but effectiveness.

“The SMART app doesn’t store any information, it ust gives users a reading, augh said.

owever, nsights uses the app s interface to synchronise the information to the cloud, and from there we provide clients with a comprehensive report based on that gathered data.

This level of visibility represents a significant evolution in safety management.

CleanSpace solutions were trialled by mining executives at the PNG  nvestment Week 202 . Images:

Rather than relying on assumptions or infrequent measurements, operators can now analyse timestamped data that shows exactly how long a respirator was worn and under what conditions.

ata is de-identified, allowing for focus on equipment rather than individuals, allowing organisations to build a culture of compliance without placing blame, meaning data can be used to improve processes and outcomes.

The emphasis on data also comes at a critical time for the mining sector across PNG, where exposure to airborne ha ards remains a persistent issue. hile these risks are well understood, ensuring consistent and correct use of protective equipment has historically been a challenge.

ata is critical, augh said. t s not about pointing fingers or telling someone they re doing the wrong thing. t s about giving mine managers the ability to look at reliable information over a defined period. Traditional respirators have contributed to this issue. Many systems are heavy, cumbersome and

uncomfortable, which can discourage consistent use. CleanSpace’s approach addresses this by combining ergonomic design with intelligent technology.

Respirators are lightweight, compact and designed without belts or hoses, reducing physical strain and making them easier to wear for extended periods.

At the core of this design is the company’s AirSensit technology, a breath-responsive system that adjusts airflow based on the user s breathing pattern, enhancing comfort and improving efficiency by delivering air only when needed.

By improving wearability and pairing it with measurable insights, CleanSpace is addressing both sides of the equation, backed by the distribution expertise of Blackwoods, encouraging higher compliance and providing necessary data. PNG

PNG Mining is a high-quality, multi-platform publication focused on the mining industry in Papua New Guinea and surrounding region. The magazine shines a spotlight on some of the most important sectors in Papua New Guinea. From copper to gold and silver to oil and gas, it covers the length and breadth of the country’s resources sector.

The hidden risk to optimisation

An innovator of filtration systems, onaldson talks to PNG Mining around the relationship between diesel fuel cleanliness and engine performance.

WITH OVER years experience in the air filtration business, onaldson is no stranger to the daily operational challenges faced by mining companies. perating in over facilities globally, technical laboratories, and over million spent in research and development each year, the company sits at the fore of filtration.

rom manufacturing the world s first air cleaner to meet the demands of tractors working in dusty paddocks in , preventing contaminants from destroying engines is in onaldson s NA. There is more that needs to be considered when dealing with unplanned downtime diesel fuel cleanliness.

onaldson sat down with PNG Mining to discuss how this often-overlooked source of downtime can be dealt with to ensure optimum efficiency across mine sites in Papua New Guinea PNG and beyond.

The smallest contaminants can be crippling

Across mine sites in the Asia-Pacific there has been a shift to the use of modern high-pressure fuel systems, meaning minor amounts of contamination can have ma or consequences.

As modern diesel engines incorporate precisionengineered high-pressure common rail P fuel in ection systems, contaminants as small as bacteria can cause significant damage if not treated correctly.

To mitigate this risk, onaldson said that original equipment manufacturers Ms specify strict in-tank fuel cleanliness levels and integrate advanced onboard filtration. uel that does not meet requirements can lead to unplanned downtime and loss of production. apid blocking of on-board fuel filters or low power events between scheduled services are common indicators of excessive contamination in your fuel, a  onaldson spokesperson told PNG Mining

Water and diesel don’t mix

ree water presents a range of issues, including corrosion, diesel fuel instability, bacterial growth fuel bug and catastrophic fuel in ection system failures,

meaning fuel needs to be protected in both storage and handling.

igh-quality deliquescent breathers help minimise moisture ingress during tank breathing cycles, particularly in high-humidity environments like PNG, the spokesperson said. outine water detection and removal from bulk storage tanks is an essential, simple and cost-effective control measure.

Check fuel infrastructure and practices

Sampling fuel from all storage locations often provides a clear understanding of both the source and severity of contamination.

e recommend taking the time to identify every potential point of contamination and moisture ingress, the spokesperson said.

Some are obvious such as loose or missing hatch covers, substandard breathers, and open vent pipes, while others, particularly those arising from poor servicing practices and workshop maintenance may require a more intensive audit.

The e olution o engines, uel an filtration

inally, onaldson noted that maintenance practices don t always keep pace with innovation, particularly with accelerations in engine and fuel system technology. As a result, maintenance processes and consumables applied to older generation equipment may not meet the requirements of modern systems.

ith ambitious production targets and increasing equipment sophistication, PNG mining operations cannot afford to overlook fuel cleanliness, the spokesperson said.

A reliable supply of clean, dry diesel fuel is essential to achieving consistent performance and minimising operating costs.

Managing fuel quality can be complex, but it doesn t need to be tackled alone. ith the right processes, equipment, and technical support, sites can confidently address contamination issues and mitigate risk to engines. PNG

ollowing completion of the construction phase, the same plant is now being repurposed to produce roading materials.

Across its operations, Sanland positions itself as a one-stop shop for crushing and screening solutions, covering equipment supply, parts, servicing and technical support. PNG

Brighter, safer sites

JW Speaker is helping light the way for mine sites around the clock, with highperformance solutions keeping workers safe and equipment moving.

EVERY JOB that relies on heavy equipment walks a fine line between productivity and safety. That is particularly true on mine sites, which have myriad moving parts and where worker wellbeing can’t be compromised. Traditional safety measures, while effective, can slow teams down when deadlines are tight. Smarter safety solutions can help to enhance productivity, with modern lighting equipment an example of how that can be achieved.

This can be done in a number of ways, with stationary lights on site to help with overall visibility and lights on trucks being modified to make the transport of personnel, equipment or materials safer in low light conditions.

JW Speaker is helping light up mine sites with equipment certified to key safety standards, ensuring clear visibility in even the harshest of conditions. lighting is fast becoming the gold standard for improving visibility on worksites, with advanced s doing far more than brightening hard-tosee areas, improving safety, communication and efficiency across industrial environments.

This can be seen with lights acting as guardrails and markers on the ground, notifying operators where vehicles can be parked and materials can be placed, or through anti-glare truck lights. igh performance s now deliver daylightquality illumination around the clock, enabling crews to work at night with the same confidence and precision they have during the day.

JW Speaker’s Model 526 anti-glare truck light is engineered to deliver powerful illumination while dramatically reducing glare, one of the most common causes of visual strain and on-site accidents. esigned for mining haul trucks and other demanding applications, it provides clear, controlled light that enhances visibility without blinding oncoming operators. The result is a safer, more predictable environment where workers can operate heavy machinery with confidence.

Available in 12- and 24-volt options, the Model 526 uses a multitude of housing lenses and beam patterns to suit the bespoke needs of mine sites.

Built to adapt to the worksite, the Model 526 dual white anti-glare beam pattern toggles between a standard white for bright visibility and a warm white to cut through dust and fog.

Another benefit of anti-glare lighting is the protection of surrounding environment as well as workers. Lighting solutions reduce stress and disorientation for animals, supporting natural behaviours and reducing the risk of collisions, pivotal for mine sites that work in remote locations.

An additional benefit with the Model is the engineered beam pattern that maximises visibility without blinding oncoming vehicles.

With heavy equipment not just moving forward or backward rotating, swinging, lifting lighting solutions help support the complexity of modern machinery, communicating through integrated sensors that make work sites both safer and more intelligent.

With directional lighting and visual signalling, systems can highlight danger ones around moving equipment, improve operator awareness, reduce downtime caused by communication and enhance overall site coordination all without interrupting productivity.

While tools are not the sole answer to ensuring better safety on-site, they can go some way in helping build a culture where safety and productivity work together.

Modern solutions give crews the clarity and confidence they need to perform at their best.

With decades of experience in heavy equipment lighting, JW Speaker continues to help today’s equipment work brighter, smarter and safer. PNG
