Simberi Island, where St Barbara operates its Simberi mine.

A dedication to PNG

St Barbara is putting PNG front and centre in its future plans.

ST BARBARA kicked off early 2025 with a major announcement that the company would be parting ways with its Atlantic gold operations in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Including the Touquoy mine and additional planned projects – the Fifteen Mile, Beaver Dam, and Cochrane Hill prospects – St Barbara’s Atlantic assets total 1.4 million ounces (Moz) in ore reserves, 2Moz in mineral resources.

Collectively, the operations and projects have an estimated mine life to 2030, with strong exploration potential in the region.

“Atlantic is a highly attractive and financially robust project and has the potential to be in production within 12 months from permitting approval,” St Barbara managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) Andrew Strelein said in a statement.

“The decision to separate Atlantic from St Barbara is underpinned by the opportunity to unlock the full value potential of the Atlantic projects under a

Canadian-listed company with a local leadership team, to focus on delivering upcoming project milestones and benefit from being closer to regulators and key stakeholders.”

While the Atlantic operations have formed a key part of St Barbara’s portfolio, the company’s focus is turning to a region quickly becoming a global powerhouse: PNG.

The decision to demerge from Canada followed a review that found the split would be a strategic move for the miner, freeing up time and resources that could be spent at its Simberi gold mine on Simberi Island, is the northernmost island in the Tabar Group of islands within PNG’s New Ireland Province.

Simberi consists of an open-cut mine and an upcoming sulphide project that has the potential to extend Simberi’s life by at least 10 years.

“The separation of Atlantic enables St Barbara to focus solely on the Simberi sulphide expansion project,” Strelein said.

The decision to leaves Canada comes after St Barbara made a promising new oxide discovery at Simberi in January.

The breakthrough was found between the project’s Southwest Sorowar and Pigibo North pits and is expected to show drill intercepts up to 2.1 grams per tonne (g/t) of gold at 25m.

Near-surface diamond drill intercepts from the sulphides sterilisation drilling in the area that forms part of the same new discovery include 24m at 1.4 grams per tonne of gold from 0m.

Further excavator trenching and limited shallow diamond drilling has been completed, with assay results due in early 2026.

The new oxide discovery is being fast-tracked with grade control drilling commencing in May to test a total area of approximately 250x80m.

“The identification of this new oxide mineralisation between Pigibo North and Sorowar is a real boost for the current Simberi oxide operations,” Strelein said.

“These significant results from trenching and the near surface drilling results are now being followed up with grade control drilling with the objective of commencing mining in Q3.”

The granting of a mining lease renewal for Simberi is in its final stages with a recent hearing drawing strong crowds in support of the operation.

“We are very grateful for the support shown by the Landowner Association, the New Ireland Provincial Government, our local Member of Parliament, the Namatanai Development Authority, and now the many members of the local community who attended the chief warden’s public hearing on the proposal for the early renewal of the Simberi mining lease,” Strelein said.

“We are also appreciative of the professionalism of the ineral eso rces thority in progressing the application for early renewal of the Simberi mining lease and for the conduct of the public hearings on schedule.”

The MRA chief warden will now issue a report of the findings fro the hearing to the ining Advisory Council (MAC). The MAC will consider the application before making a recommendation to newly-appointed Mining Minister Rainbo Paita.

“Renewal of the Simberi mining lease is a key step towards unlocking the 2.7Moz sulphide ore reserve at Simberi and expanding gold production to over 200,000oz per annum,” Strelein said.

With its decision to divest its Atlantic operations and focus solely on PNG, St Barbara is proving it is deeply committed to the region, with Simberi standing as a model of community-integrated mining.

With a workforce made up predominantly of people from Simberi, the nearby Tabar Islands, and other regions of t ar ara has wor ed to ens re that the enefits of ining are shared directly with the communities closest to its o erations.

This strong local presence is complemented by ongoing support for community initiatives and economic participation.

Through its genuine collaboration with stakeholders, the company continues to demonstrate that responsible mining can create real, lasting value for the people of PNG. PNG

A crushing success

CSSH’s IMS pugmill and track blender are reshaping mineral processing in PNG.

CRUSHER & Screen Sales (CSSH), the Irish Manufacturers (IMS) distributors for Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG), know a thing or two about pugmills.

sed ri arily sed for i ing and conditioning various materials, particularly in operations involving copper concentrates, pugmills are essential for blending aggregates and waste stabilisation.

Understanding how vital pugmills are for the mining industry, CSSH now stocks the PM1200-20TB track pugmill, a machine designed to meet a wide range of ro ects.

With two separate feed hoppers for blending two raw materials, the option of one or two powder ho ers fitted with load cells and rotary al e and the ability to blend two liquids fully automated, the is the ne t generation in pugmilltechnology.

The two feed hoppers have separate conveyor elts oth fitted with elt scales and controlled y a programmable logic controller (PLC) and recording system. The operator can then program the batch size, percentage of both raw materials, powder and liquid percentages and tonnes per hour.

The plant has its own WiFi so the PLC can be anaged fro a loader or site office showing live blending in process. And, if the programmed percentages are not met, the PLC will stop the plant.

The batch report shows the actual blend against the one programmed and will produce a project report including all the separate products used for the day combining all the batches.

The PM1200-20TB two 5m-long feed hoppers hold 10m3 each and can have the dividing wall removed to make one 20m3 hooper. There is also the o tion of fitting i rating hydra lic ti ing grids to the two feed hoppers for pre-screening of oversize, rubbish from the product or vibrators lumping material. The Pugmill blender is powered by a Cat C7 motor and hydraulic drive train.

Innovative tools and offerings answer critical tire management demands by providing solutions that improve safety, reduce downtime and advance sustainability.

Why innovation is key to safer mining tyre servicing

Working closely with mining tyres carries inherent risk. Kal Tire’s development of tools, practices and systems has helped to lighten the load.

IT’S NO secret that servicing mining tyres comes with its own risks.

Mining tyres are large, weighing up to 5000kg and stretching to tall. o ine this with operating temperatures and pressures and it’s easy to see why the most basic tasks should be undertaken with the greatest of care.

The rapid development in truck types and sizes as well as increased rod ction targets eans plant equipment and tools are being pushed to their operating limits.

Tyre technicians are working under increasing pressure, leading to a higher number of servicerelated safety incidents.

But Kal Tire is looking to change this situation for the better.

Lightening the load

Given their considerable size and weight, handling tyres can lead to scle and ac strain and finger pinches and crushes.

Advances in mechanisation and tooling have provided important safety improvements over the years; however, many of these tools have changed little since they were introduced 30 years ago and must continue to be properly applied, inspected and aintained.

In addition, some tools require training for safe use and can be heavy beasts themselves, with torque guns alone often weighing in at more than 30kg.

Since time is money in the mining industry, there can be pressure on technicians to get machines back into ser ice ic ly. his can lead to a otential con ict between doing the job quickly and doing it safely.

And while technologies, tools and training each have a part to play in keeping technicians safe, they must be implemented and focused on in the manner of a hierarchy to be truly effective.

“Implementing high-level controls tends to be more effective than those at the lower end of the control hierarchy,” Kal Tire Mining Tire Group senior vice president Dan Allan said.

“Frequently in mining, rules or personal protective equipment (PPE) are used for mitigating hazards, but these aren’t enough.

“It’s time to think about eliminating hazards thro gh new rocesses or sing engineering control like innovative tooling to guard against hazards ore effecti ely.

While PPE will always have a part to play in safe working environments, the onus is on technicians to apply it consistently. Reinventing work, while more challenging, is likely to be more effective and er anent.

Kal Tire’s GATR eases the physical burden on technicians by supporting the weight of heavy tools.

Allan believes ongoing investment in innovation will be critical to eliminating potential tyre ser icing ha ards.

“That’s why Kal Tire established its Innovation enter in to get to the heart of the nderlying issues to make our work around the wheel as safe as possible,” he said.

Kal Tire’s GATR (Gravity Assist Tooling Rig) is a prime example of this investment.

Developed with feedback from the company’s technicians, GATR eases the physical burden on technicians by supporting the weight of heavy tools, such as the 36kg torque gun.

“ hey re essential in red cing finger inches fatigue and strain when mounting tyres, especially ultra-class models,” Allan said.

Leveraging data for the future

Kal Tire hopes insights generated by tyre data management systems will be used to optimise the lanning and e ec tion of tyre ser icing in the f t re.

The company pointed to a recent example in British ol ia anada where one of its c sto ers conducted a trial focusing on automating tyre pressure data collection into Kal Tire’s Tire and Operations Management System (TOMS).

Technologies, tools and training must be implemented in the manner of a hierarchy to be effective.

Trial insights showed a reduced inspection time, lowering technician e os re y er cent.

Robotics and automation also have a part to play in increasing safe practices. With most manual work in ffing ilding and groo ing already eli inated automation could see these risk mitigated further if robotics were to take over the remaining tasks.

“As automated systems become more economical and feasible, there are so many opportunities to use automation in the tyre service space to eliminate hazards and risk,” Allan said.

“The only limit to the application of these automated systems is our own imagination.

The sheer size and scale of mining tyres can make working near them inherently risky.

“To achieve safer tyre servicing, mining companies need to work closely with their teams, service providers, original equipment manufacturers, training bodies, and more. We’ll get there faster and more effectively if we work together.” PNG

Cutting through the noise

For the team at Australian Mining Product and Services, adaptability and simplicity go hand-in-hand.

MINING IS becoming an increasingly tricky industry

– ores are lower-graded and deeper, skilled labour is eco ing harder to find and en iron ental regulations are adding new layers of complexity to project development.

But Australian Mining Product and Services offers products encompassing many options, to keep things si le.

Founded with a clear mission of streamlining mining procurement and maintenance, Australian Mining Product and Services has built its reputation on the pillars of reliability, cost-effectiveness and technical recision.

As the mining sectors in Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG) continue to evolve, Australian Mining Product and Services has positioned itself as a key enabler, supplying the tools and solutions that keep o erations r nning efficiently all witho t adding unnecessary complexity.

“We’re looking forward to branching out into the PNG mining sector,” Australian Mining Product and Services managing director Stewart Fernandez told PNG Mining

“We have previously done some work at the Simberi and Porgera gold mines, but PNG is a big place; there’s more work to be done there.”

Specialising in a range of mining consumables and equipment, from couplings and gaskets to valves and steel fabrication, Australian Mining Product and Services offer products tailored to meet the harsh demands of mining environments.

At the core of the company’s offerings is adaptability.

“We do a lot of steel work at Simberi, but at Porgera the work has been more about polyurethane lining,” Fernandez said. “We can supply almost anything a mine in PNG needs, and I’m excited to work directly from PNG in the future.”

While Fernandez outlined a wide array of products that his company could supply, what sets Australian Mining Product and Services apart isn’t just its inventory – it’s the company’s willingness to solve niche technical problems quickly.

Whether a client needs a one-off component to address a breakdown or a bulk order for a long-term shutdown, Australian Mining Product and Services prides itself on fast response times and tailored solutions.

Australian Mining Product and Services supplies the tools and solutions that keep mining operations nning efficient

Backed by in-house engineering and manufacturing capabilities, Australian Mining Product and Services controls the quality of its products from design to delivery. It’s partnerships with global suppliers also mean mining operators in PNG and the broader region can access international-grade products without long lead times.

Australian Mining Product and Services understands that environmental and operational challenges in mining demand robust supply chains. By focusing on durable materials, minimal downtime and clear communication, the company aligns itself with odern ining s sh toward efficiency and resilience.

While many suppliers in the sector focus on scale, Australian Mining Product and Services remains grounded in service. This operational awareness ensures that even in high-pressure shutdowns or remote-area logistics like in PNG, the company can deli er.

With expansion into markets like PNG becoming a greater focus, the company is optimistic about the f t re.

“There’s a lot of opportunity in the region,” Fernandez said. “And we’re ready to meet it head-on, without overcomplicating things.”

In an era where mining is growing more complicated by the year, Australian Mining Product and er ices down to earth sol tion first indset is a refreshing approach.

And for clients looking to keep operations simple, efficient and on trac that s worth ore than e er.

Poised for growth

One of the world’s leading mining and infrastructure solutions providers has called PNG home for the last 35 years.

ORICA IS a company that knows what it means to grow with an industry.

Founded in 1874, the explosives manufacturing company has since grown and evolved into one of the world’s leading mining and infrastructure solutions providers, with a truly global reach.

Landing on Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) shores over 35 years ago, Orica has steadily built a reputation and na e for itself within the acific nation.

“Our presence in PNG began with some small gold mines running out of Port Moresby,” Orica area business manager – Eastern Australia, PNG and acific a es ir atric told PNG Mining

“We then began working with the largest 100-percent-PNG-owned miner when their mine started

up. That’s when we started to see that in-country manufacturing was an option for us.”

Previously, Orica had been importing explosives to as a finished rod ct. t all that changed when the company built an explosives manufacturing plant in-situ at the mine.

“The new plant meant we could transport raw materials out of Australia into Port Moresby and an fact re the e losi es in ir atric said. “ ow ort ores y is o r a or staging oint for initiating syste s for o r a or mining client.

“We also use that as a pivotal point for our cyanide supply, which we supply to mines in PNG for gold e traction.

While PNG’s rugged terrain and geographical location can pose challenges for some companies, Orica has managed to overcome these obstacles to ensure its customers were supplied with the best.

“The challenging part about delivering to PNG is the logistics side of it,” Kirkpatrick said. “In the early days we si lified that y relying on charter essels so we could have security of supply, and we made sure to be strategic about our landing point.

“We picked the two largest ports in Port Moresby and Lae which meant we were able to look after the mining sectors in Western Province and out towards the Porgera gold mine.”

The other challenge Orica initially faced was PNG’s road networks.

“Everything has to go by ship,” Kirkpatrick said. “We had to be strategic about where our drop point was, which is why Lae was a key position for us because the road networks there go up towards the Highlands region.”

Securing these key positions in Port Moresby and Lae has made a world of difference to rica c sto ers.

“The COVID-19 pandemic really drove home how isolated PNG is,” Kirkpatrick said. “Getting e en finished goods fro stralia to was near impossible, but now because we’ve set up our manufacturing facilities and our staging points in the country, we have enough stock in PNG to seamlessly service our customers.”

Orica’s support extends beyond PNG mining companies; the company is also a vital member of the wider community.

“We run community engagement programs and assist with some educational drives,” Orica territory anager and acific slands ic ell told PNG Mining

“We recently donated a computer classroom to a local community near our a or ining c sto er and we ha e a lot of engagement with community events. Over the next 12 months, we plan to sponsor an impact fund to raise awareness through security, education and medical facilities.

“Engaging with communities is so important in PNG and Orica has become well-known for its community work.”

As 2025 progresses, Orica will continue to safeguard the security of its supply within the country, ensuring it has the necessary stock for its customers.

“With the gold price reaching all-time highs at the o ent we are well ositioned to aintain a strong presence in the country and meet any increased demand from our gold customers,” ell added.

With the gold price reaching all-time highs at the moment, we are well positioned to maintain a strong presence in the country and meet any increased demand from our gold customers.”

Orica territory manager – PNG and Pacific Islands Nic Bell

“PNG is a gold-rich country and we want to make sure we’re there for the ride.

For Kirkpatrick, the future lies in Orica’s strong relationship with PNG ports.

“We’re continually pushing for better, s arter and ore efficient ways to ring products in and out of PNG,” he said. “So not only is PNG an import business for us, it’s now also an export one, too.

“We’re manufacturing in PNG and exporting to the Solomon Islands and we re loo ing to go as far o t as i i. Without the engagement and the support of PNG ports, we wouldn’t be able to operate as effectively.”

Orica is also focused on growing its national workforce to support future endeavours.

“We have a big emphasis on making sure we’re training the national wor force to eco e s ect atter e erts in the e losi e s ace ell said.

Orica has overcome PNG’s geographical challenges to ensure its customers are supplied with the best.

“We’ve put a big emphasis on training and upskilling to ensure we nationalise that skillset and future-proof the region to give wider employment opportunities.

“We see a lot of organic growth coming out of PNG and we’re poised to grow with the country.” PNG

Motion has big plans for PNG

Motion has spent the past few decades addressing unique challenges faced in the PNG resources sector.

LEGACY IS the word that comes to mind when considering the multi-generational industrial solutions powerhouse that is Motion.

From its beginnings over half a century ago, the company has a long history of expanding the boarders of its reach both geographically and in growing the scope of its offering.

oday otion rod cts are a aila le at o er locations in the sia acific region s orting ore than e loyees in o er re air and ser ice centres and a or distri tion centres. er otion rod cts are a aila le in stralia alone a n er that s rges to o er million worldwide.

he ind stry in is e anding and otion is perfectly positioned to support the market, whether it be existing operations, restarting mines, or mines in de elo ent.

he ining ind stry has certainly een booming in recent years, and as the sector grows, so too does its need for dynamic solutions to obstacles, especially considering the country’s unique challenges of heavy rains and hard-to-access terrain.

In answer to these challenges, Motion has spent the past few decades broadening its focus from componentry supplier to full-range sol tions ro ider.

Motion is taking a holistic approach to its customers’ operations. Not only can Motion supply parts as needed, but the company’s Engineering and Services arm is able to investigate and research aintenance iss es and find the root ca se.

From there, Motion can analyse the issue and develop a tailored solution to give its customers longlasting, sustainable and reliable improvements.

Motion’s scope for optimising PNG operations comes from the strength of its three key lines of business – Industrial Solutions, Fluid Power Solutions, and Engineering and Services.

Motion’s Industrial Solutions come from its foundation in the bearing, power transmission and

mechanical drive solutions space, largely thanks to the years of hard work from its legacy companies BSC and CBC Bearings.

Motion’s Engineering and Services business line aims to look at anything in rotary motion, linear motion or hydraulic motion and provide a turnkey sol tion a i ising the efficiency and o t t of that e i ent.

Fluid Power Solutions is a major focus for Motion as it looks to the PNG sector, and includes hydraulic hoses, industrial hoses, mobile service units, and general id ower co onentry.

Motion has many companies under the Fluid ower ol tions anner as well as direct s liers who hel ro ide ore s ecific e ertise. his eans otion can deli er t rn ey sol tions to its customers, saving them the hassle of chasing multiple sources.

It’s all part of Motion’s ongoing commitment of providing small-business-style service backed by a global network of knowledge.

Condition monitoring has become a huge part of a modern mine site’s operations, and Motion is committed to working with its customers to make sure nothing slips through the cracks.

In addition to providing an overview of how equipment is tracking, Motion also has teams on hand that can collect condition monitoring data and analyse it on site. nline onitoring is also becoming a popular and affordable means of condition monitoring.

If a bearing is going to give an operator trouble before their next maintenance cycle, the Motion team can advise the customer, allowing them to isolate the equipment, make the necessary changes, and get it back into service with minimal interruption to production.

It allows miners to think ahead when it comes to approaching maintenance so they can avoid unexpected failure issues before they occur. Ultimately, less downtime is a cost saving to the c sto er.

Motion provides small-business-style service backed by an international network of knowledge.

While problems will always arise thanks to the mining industry's heavy-duty nature, Motion works to establish strong, ongoing customer relationships so they know they can rely on the company. PNG

Raising the bar

The Australian Mining Prospect Awards are back and bigger than ever in September.

IN AN industry often in the public eye, few moments shine brighter than when a team’s hard work is recognised on a national stage.

For Robson Civil Projects, winning the 2024 Mine Project Success of the Year award at the Australian Mining Prospect Awards was more than a trophy ¬– it was a moment of validation and pride, and a springboard to future opportunities.

The Prospect Awards have long been the only national awards program to stop, take a look at what the mining industry is doing, and reward those who are excelling and going above and beyond, recognising and rewarding innovation.

Robson Civil was honoured for its work at the Maxwell underground project in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales.

Discussing the win, Robson Hunter Valley manager Michael Hanson described it as a “highlight of the year”, especially for the on-the-ground project teams and those in support roles.

“The win was a massive boost to the team,”

Hanson told PNG Mining. “There was a huge amount of effort that went into this project, so to be recognised on such a visible stage meant a lot.

“It gave everyone a great sense of self-satisfaction and pride in their work.”

That pride translated into celebration. Hanson said the Robson team enjoyed celebrating the win in Perth on awards night, and at a team dinner in the weeks that followed.

“It was a really good win for the team on the job, as well as the supporting teams,” he said.

“And of course it was great for visibility. There were lots of social media posts, photos and conversations that were shared over that night.”

Changing the conversation he significance of the ros ect wards goes well beyond recognition. For many across the mining sector they re resent a rare o ort nity to refra e the public narrative.

“Sitting in that room last year and seeing how many companies and people are involved in doing good work really shifts that perspective,” Hanson said.

“These events remind us – and the public – that mining is a critical part of Australia’s economy and future.

The significance of the Prospect Awards goes far beyond recognition.

Tackling the toughest terrain

Sirrom is returning to PNG with bold plans to support resources projects through tailored logistics, hospitality and community partnerships.

FOR DECADES,

Sirrom Corporation has been synonymous with dependable hospitality, logistics and accommodation services in some of the most remote and demanding environments.

Now, the Australian-based company is refocusing its efforts on Papua New Guinea (PNG), a region it believes is poised for a new era of growth in the mining and energy sectors.

Originally founded in Brisbane in 1967, Sirrom has built a global reputation through bold international ventures, including catering operations for United Nations (UN) troops in Cambodia and feeding over 35,000 soldiers in Iraq over an 11-year span.

Back home, the company steadily grew into one of the to fi e ro iders of re ote acco odation in Australia, servicing over 40 mining camps across Queensland, Western Australia and the orthern erritory.

“Our business thrives on doing hard things,” Sirrom chief e ec ti e officer raig adigan told PNG Mining. “We are a company that is comfortable eing nco forta le o erating in diffic lt terrain with co le logistics and a ing eaningf l investments in local communities.”

Sirrom’s history with PNG dates back to its early wor at the a a a a oil refinery near Port Moresby. During that time, the company not only delivered high-quality services, but also laid the foundation of local engagement, developing memoranda of understanding (MoU) with landowner groups and fostering partnerships with local sinesses.

Sirrom is now set to bring its hallmark ‘home away from home’ hospitality model back to PNG, s ecifically designed for re ote and logistically co le reso rces en iron ents.

While each project is unique, the fundamentals remain: mobilising strong leadership, hiring and training local employees, and supplementing local supply chains where necessary.

“We have an operating model, but every location is logistically different and has its own workforce and community considerations,” Madigan said. “They key is to approach them all like they’re different and not use a cookie-cutter approach.”

Sirrom’s strategy centres on four key pillars: early engagement with landowners through MoUs, joint ventures (JVs) with local businesses and landowner groups, subcontractor agreements with communitybased enterprises, and a strong emphasis on direct local employment and supply chains.

hese illars ai to ens re that econo ic enefits remain in PNG and that communities feel a sense of ownership and pride in the projects unfolding.

“The biggest success comes from investing as much energy and time as possible into a building a strong, well-trained local workforce,” Madigan said. “It builds ownership in the project, it’s harmonious, and it’s rewarding for both the workers and their co nities.

Looking ahead, Sirrom sees immense opportunity in PNG’s untapped potential.

“PNG has incredible mineral and energy resource wealth,” Madigan said. “As the country works to bring those resources to market, we see ourselves as a partner that can sustain the workforces needed to get it done.”

From the rugged Highlands Region to the coastlines near ae irro s e i le odel is designed to adapt.

And with a track record of going where others won’t, and doing what others can’t, Sirrom is ready to help shape PNG’s resources future – one camp, community and workforce at a time. PNG

SMARTER MINING SOLUTIONS FOR PAPUA NEW GUINEA

www.motion.com.au

Motion is proudly supporting PNG’s fast-growing mining industry with tailored solutions designed for local conditions – from torrential rains to remote terrain.

Our expertise spans bearings, power transmission, fluid power, condition monitoring, and engineering services – all backed by a global network and decades of experience.

Whether restarting operations or building new sites, Motion is your trusted partner for reliable performance, increased safety, and reduced downtime.

Smarter solutions, safer tailings

Effective tailings management is critical to ensuring en iron ental safety o erational efficiency and regulatory compliance in the mining industry.

TAILINGS, OR waste management, is a key part of the mining lifecycle.

Tailings are the waste materials that remain following minerals and metals extraction from ore. While necessary, tailings management can come with a set of risks, including water and soil conta ination.

To mitigate these risks, the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) was de elo ed to e the first glo al fra ewor to improve the safety and governance of tailings storage facilities (TSF) in the mining industry.

Launched in August 2020 by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), GISTM aims to prevent catastrophic failures and achieve zero harm to people and the environment.

The Standard is a set of 15 principles that includes 77 individual requirements for tailings facilities. Operators conduct self-assessments against the requirements, with a third party auditing the co any s confor ance.

Case study: Frieda River hydroelectric project

The up-and-coming Frieda River copper-gold project in Papua New Guinea (PNG) will employ an innovative method to dispose its tailings, involving a key part of its broader project area.

The project encompasses the mine, the Sepik infrastructure project, the Sepik power grid project, and the Frieda River hydroelectric project. The latter will play a crucial role in tailings management.

ild a as halt core roc fill da to act as an integrated storage facility.

The dam has been designed in accordance with international standards, using the internationally recognised dam construction method of asphalt core roc fill.

“PanAust does not take lightly its commitment to ensuring the safe design, safe construction, and safe operation of the [tailings] dam,” Frieda River project director Phil McCormack said.

“PanAust is mindful of the ecosystem it is in including its host communities. As a values-driven organisation, it assures its host communities and governments that is committed to sustainably operating its business in an environmentally, socially and c lt rally res onsi le way for the enefit of all stakeholders.”

McCormack attributed the environmentally friendly o e to an st s s ccess in o erating mines with waste rock and tailings storage facilities in Laos.

“We understand the importance of the Sepik ecosystem, where the project is based, and our work is committed to ensuring the safe design, construction and operation of the dam for the longter enefit of all its sta eholders he said.

“It is a transformative approach to the project for the Sepik region and Papua New Guinea, aimed at protecting the environment while enhancing living standards, and general wellbeing in the remote e i co nities. PNG

Tailings management can come with a set of risks, including water and soil contamination.

Ten tips for best practice in conforming with GISTM

•Start early: conformance with GISTM is a multi-year project.

•Engage the board directors sho ld as anage ent for infor ation on the co any s a roach to the tandard and for regular updates.

•External support: larger mining companies typically use in-house resources to manage conformance against the tandard. aller co anies ight se e ternal cons lting fir s.

•Form multidisciplinary teams: the Standard cuts across TSF design, construction and operation, mine closure planning and implementation, environmental engineering, community engagement, investor relations and corporate affairs.

•Develop an action plan: mining companies that are well-advanced on conforming to the Standard will recognise any compliance gaps and have a plan to address them.

•Make appointments: the Standard requires mining companies to appoint an engineer of record for the TSF and an accountable executive.

•Develop required reports: for example, the Standard requires a periodic dam safety review carried out by an independent alified re iew engineer.

•Plan for ongoing work: it is expected that mining companies will have their TSF conformance regularly audited.

•Follow audit developments: mining companies should ensure they are up to date with the latest announcements on how audits will be conducted.

•Communicate with stakeholders: regular communication on this issue is vital.

Wired for growth

When TriCab returns to the PNG Expo in 2025, it will be showcasing tough, tailored cable solutions and strong commitment to regional mining growth.

FOLLOWING A strong showing in 2024, TriCab is once again set to take centre stage at the 2025 PNG Industrial and Mining Resources Exhibition and Conference (PNG Expo).

Returning as a silver sponsor, the Australian cable manufacturer is excited to continue showcasing its commitment to innovation and its expanding resence across the stralasian and acific ar ets.

“Supporting a prestigious event like the PNG Expo is a way for TriCab to demonstrate a broad range of industry and mining experts our ability to supply not only standard cables, but also to design and deliver es o e sol tions tailored to site s ecific needs

TriCab state manager for PNG Shane Plumridge told PNG Mining

TriCab’s involvement last year offered outstanding exposure and valuable connections, cementing the brand’s position as a reliable and forward-thinking cable partner in the region.

The 2024 event was more than a display of products – it was a chance to engage directly with the challenges and requirements of those on the ground.

The result? A clear decision to come back in 2025 with more to share.

Much of TriCab’s momentum over the past year has been driven by its engineering advancements in cable design for rugged environments.

The development of a leading thermoplastic oly rethane ac eted ca le s ecifically tailored for the harsh demands of mining and industrial sites – has been one of the company’s standout achievements.

Designed to meet the high expectations of site engineers, the new jacket delivers superior durability, e i ility and resistance nder e tre e conditions.

“TriCab has been involved with a number of industrial and mining sites through the last 12 months and is keen to expand this in 2025,” Plumridge said.

“Our heavy-duty SWA [steel wire armoured] cables have also made a welcome return to the TriCab family, and we now offer a full range of MV [medium voltage] cables to suit the needs of modern operations.”

hese ad ance ents re ect ri a s dee er sh into customisation and problem-solving. With more than four decades of cable manufacturing expertise,

the company prides itself on being able to respond quickly and intelligently to evolving industry needs.

This year’s PNG Expo will see TriCab display a comprehensive range of mining and industrial cables, including its newest H7 TPU cables, standard MV products, and Trailing cable series.

Visitors can also expect to see the company’s existing line-up of variable frequency drive (VFD) and variable speed drive, Control, and Instrumentation cable solutions, highlighting the length and breadth of TriCab’s capabilities.

While TriCab’s reputation in Australia is well established, the company is now doubling down on its ambitions in the PNG market. With deep historical ties to projects across the country and a keen understanding of the local operating environment, TriCab is positioning itself as a long-term partner to PNG’s growing industrial and mining sectors.

“As mining operations expand across PNG to meet global demands for raw materials, TriCab is ready to support these efforts,” Plumridge said.

“Our experience in the Australian mining sector, combined with our growing cable range, means we’re well-placed to contribute meaningfully to PNG’s future.” PNG

Driving reliability

D&T Hydraulics returns to the PNG Expo in 2025, showcasing cutting-edge repair tech and vertical integration to cut costs and boost reliability.

D&T HYDRAULICS is once again placing its engineering expertise and commitment to costsaving innovation on display at the 2025 PNG Industrial and Mining Resources Exhibition and Conference (PNG Expo).

With a long-standing presence in the region, the company is continuing to invest in solutions tailored to the needs of Papua New Guinea (PNG)’s mining and heavy industry sectors – this time, with a spotlight on vertical integration and advanced repair technologies.

“D&T has a strong strategy to support PNG mining operations,” D&T sales and business development manager Raymond Volschenk told PNG Mining

Among the standout capabilities D&T will showcase at this year’s PNG Expo is its market-leading laser cladding technology. Laser cladding enables the company to restore components to zero hours and supports extended remanufacturing to prolong the lifespan of key mining and industrial equipment.

According to Volschenk, it’s not just about technical excellence but measurable value.

“With laser cladding, we provide our customers the opportunity to save costs on a replacement,” he said. “We can offer this technology with confidence through engineered ergonomics and proven process delivering market-leading quality and turn around. This supports the execution of repair and rebuilds,

D&T Hydraulics will display its engineering expertise and commitment at PNG Expo 2025.

and ultimately reduces the cost per service life.”

For attendees of the PNG Expo, this means getting a closer look at D&T’s practical innovations that directly address operational pressures in PNG’s mining landscape – pressures such as equipment downtime, high replacement costs, and limited access to reliable local suppliers.

“All the major mining parties, especially in planning, maintenance and procurement divisions, should attend,” Volschenk encouraged. “We're looking at what we can do to support reducing costs and keeping their operations going.”

In addition to technology-driven repair solutions, D&T Hydraulics is also showcasing its progress in vertically integrating its supply chain. This strategic direction enables the company to exert greater control over quality, availability, and delivery timelines – critical elements in an industry where time and reliability matter.

“We can talk about the work we’ve done in the last 18 to 24 months around vertical integration,” Volschenk said. “We've got our own steel source for hydraulic cylinder manufacturing and remanufacture, as well as supply chain development for front corner rebuilds on haul trucks.”

These capabilities are a testament to the company’s mission of delivering solutions that reduce costs, extend equipment life, and maximise reliability.
