The future looks bright Papua New Guinea’s mining industry has, over the last 12 months, seen accelerated growth supported by impressive resource estimate upgrades, growing exploration activity across key projects and record-breaking economic contributions.

BUT NOW, more than ever, future success is being defined less by what comes out of the ground, but the personnel, collaborations, partnerships and training behind the scenes – with cross-industry and, in some cases, cross-country collaborations more important than ever in further developing economic growth and prosperity for communities and people.

This is a focus in this edition of PNG Mining, looking at some of the ways major companies, such as Newmont, are continuing to invest in its people to improve capabilities and support the people and communities in which is operates.

Education and training was also a key focus point of the PNG Industrial and Mining Expo and Conference (PNG Expo).

Bigger and better than ever, the event bought together key mining companies, suppliers and decision makers under one

roof, focusing on strengthening PNG’s position within the global market.

Being given the opportunity to host the conferencing program at the event this year was an honour and a real privilege, and it was great to connect with all those in attendance – from those providing valuable insights on-stage, to the distributors and suppliers supporting PNG’s industry growth and key players across the mining, energy, infrastructure and resources sectors.

As organisations look to build their workforces of the future and projects look to seek further investment to push next phases of growth, am confident that PNG’s mining sphere will continue to develop, mature and blossom – buoyed by collaborations made at events like PNG Expo and strengthened by ongoing communications in boardrooms, on-site and beyond.

The future is continuing to look bright, and I look forward to continuing to play a small part in reporting on – and highlighting – the sector's successes.

Ok Tedi is continuing to advance its tailings storage and environmental upgrade plans.

Ok Tedi advances environmental and growth pipeline k edi Mining has moved its proposed k irim ailings torage acility closer to execution while continuing early development and community engagement for the redevelopment of the Misima gold pro ect.

The company submitted an nvironmental and ocial mpact Assessment for the facility to Papua ew uinea’s onservation and nvironment Protection Agency, marking a ma or milestone under its rowth 20 0 trategy. esigned to retain both coarse and fine tailings on land, the facility would reduce the volume entering the downstream river system and transition Ok Tedi away from riverine disposal towards engineered storage. he ailings torage acility is critical to the future of Ok Tedi and represents the single largest environmental mitigation initiative ever undertaken by the company, k edi managing director and chief executive officer edi limbit said. he company expects the pro ect to reduce sediment accumulation in the

Ok Tedi and Fly River corridors, improve aquatic habitat protection and lessen impacts on communities that depend on the waterways for transport, fishing and traditional livelihoods.

While the TSF is intended to support the existing operation’s long term future, k edi is also progressing Misima through its wholly owned subsidiary, Misima Minerals, wth a second round of community engagement carried out earlier in the year. The forum updated landowners and other stakeholders on work completed following initial consultations in ecember and reaffirmed the pro ect’s five year development plan. pen and transparent dialogue with Misima communities is essential as we progress this pro ect, k edi general manager for social performance and sustainability Jesse Pile said in a statement. hese engagements allow us to openly share information, listen to community perspectives, and set realistic expectations as we progress towards mine redevelopment. Newmont readies Lihir for a stronger second half ewmont expects production at its ihir gold mine to strengthen during the second half of 202 , when significant work on the operation’s earshore arrier pro ect is also scheduled to begin.

The outlook positions the Papua New uinean operation for a stronger finish to the year after lower grades and planned maintenance weighed on its uarterly performance in March. ihir produced ,000 ounces of gold during the first uarter, down from 2,000 ounces in the ecember 202 uarter and 4,000 ounces in the corresponding period last year.

espite the softer start, ewmont maintained its full year ihir guidance at 0,000 ounces, sub ect to a five per cent variation. he company expects ihir to be among the operations driving its group wide production increase during the second half, alongside oddington and anami in Australia, erro egro in Argentina and Pe as uito in Mexico. ewmont is targeting full year costs applicable to sales of 4 per ounce and all in sustaining costs of per ounce at ihir. he company has also allocated million in sustaining capital and 40

million in development capital to the P operation during 202 . ts broader development spending is expected to be weighted per cent towards the second half, primarily due to the timing of significant earshore arrier works at ihir.

While ewmont has flagged the potential for higher group unit costs during the June quarter, partly due to increased costs applicable to sales at ihir, the unchanged production and cost guidance suggests the miner expects the operation to recover ground as grades, maintenance schedules and pro ect investment align later in the year. Kainantu expansion translates into mine performance 2 Mining’s tage expansion is beginning to reshape the operating profile of its ainantu gold mine, with a larger processing plant and a second underground mining front supporting a series of quarterly records. ainantu produced 4 ,0 ounces of gold e uivalent Au during the une 202 uarter, comprising 42, ounces of gold, . million pounds of copper and 0, 0 ounces of silver. he result kept 2 on course for its 202 guidance of 0,000 22 ,000 ounces Au , with production expected to be weighted towards the second half. he clearest measure of the ramp up was throughput. 2 processed a record 22 , tonnes, up per cent from

the corresponding uarter of 202 and per cent from the March uarter.

Gold and copper recoveries remained strong at . per cent and .2 per cent respectively. nderground activity also set new benchmarks, with quarterly development reaching 2 m, while ore mined rose to 22 ,2 4 tonnes and total material movement reached 42 ,0 2 tonnes. ower ora, ainantu’s second mining front, delivered its first stoping ore in April and will continue ramping up through 202 . irst stope ore from a third front at win ncline is expected in the eptember quarter, initially from Judd.

olu Minerals is using its most intensive drilling campaign to rebuild the geological picture at the olukuma gold mine, linking near mine discoveries with a planned return to production in the first uarter of 202 . y une 0, the company had completed 4 holes for 22, m, including holes for , m during the une uarter. he results will feed a ma or mineral resource estimate M update scheduled for late August, following the expected release of a substantial assay batch earlier in the month. he work has already identified two high grade structures close to existing mine development the undoot and Gulbadi Splays. he undoot play returned 4. m at 42. grams per tonne g t gold, including . m at 2. g t, and remains open across more than 2 0m of prospective strike. he ulbadi play was recognised through a reinterpretation of historical data, supported by an intersection of 2m at . 4g t gold, with the proximity of both discoveries to exisitng infrastructure

supporting a shortened pathway to development in terms of exploration success and resource growth.

This is particularly important as the mine's interpreted vein system, extends for at least km, with only .2km of the vein being reached by exisitng underground working and infrastructure. his is far more than simply adding new drilling results it is a complete review of the geological model, supported by modern interpretation and significantly enhanced datasets, olu Minerals managing director and chief executive officer hris Muller said in a statement. ndependent consultants are assessing up to 44 mineralised vein systems for possible inclusion in the new M . nderground development has also restarted on the 0 evel, where early face sampling returned multiple intervals above 0g t gold. he current program is the first phase of more than ,000m of planned near mine drilling and is designed to expand the exisitng inventory to suport the restart at olukuma. South Pacific Metals o ens new PNG ex loration ront outh Pacific Metals has opened another exploration front in Papua New Guinea, mobilising a staged program at ili eke while continuing to generate high grade gold copper results near 2 Mining’s ainantu operation. he 00 per cent owned ili eke pro ect in ela Province already hosts an inferred resource of 2 million tonnes grading 0.24 grams per tonne g t gold and 0. 4 per cent copper. t contains . million ounces of gold, 02,000 tonnes of copper and 40,000 tonnes of molybdenum, e uating to 4.2 million ounces of gold e uivalent. mportantly, the resource sits within only one of ili eke’s four prospect areas, providing confidence of even

greater resource growth at the pro ect.

Mobilisation follows community meetings in Tari that secured landowner support and backing from provincial, district and local level governments. ili eke is rare for an explorer of our si e. A district scale system with a 4.2 million ounce resource and more than 20 million of past work behind it, yet with three of its four prospect areas barely drilled, outh Pacific Metals executive chairman Michael Murphy said. he high grade results are already on the board, from high grade skarn intercepts to multi gram gold in soils.

Adyton closes in on first roduction Adyton Resources's portfolio across Papua ew uinea is set to move along two parallel tracks, which involve progressing ergusson sland towards production while expanding the longer term exploration opportunity at eni sland.

At ergusson sland, the company more than doubled the Wapolu gold resource during the first half of 202 and secured approval for the pro ect’s nvironmental Permit. A Mining ease application has been submitted, with approval targeted for the fourth uarter, while bulk sampling is expected to begin late in the eptember uarter.

istorical work by on inc iotinto Australia between 1984 and 1989 included surface trenching that returned 2 0m at 2.4 grams per tonne g t gold and g t silver, including m at . g t gold and 2g t silver. owever, only six diamond holes were drilled historically, and there has been no active exploration within the licence area since that campaign. he grant of the au reek icence is a defining milestone for the arm in, consolidating our tenure over the entire 40km long no trend, a district scale mineralised corridor that has seen almost no modern exploration since the late 0s, executive chairman hris van Wi k said in a statement.

he licence grant also triggers a further 200,000 payment from io into to under their farm in agreement. io into’s legacy samples and historical datasets are expected to accelerate target generation across the corridor. he wider no pro ect includes ’s existing 2 licence and the usi gold skarn resource, containing million tonnes at .42g t gold for ,000 ounces. ext steps include regional geochemical sampling and mapping, evaluation of geophysical survey options, and community engagement at au reek before field activities begin. Building capability from within Education and training remains a critical pillar for Papua New Guinea’s resources sector.

AS PAPUA New Guinea’s (PNG) mining and resources sector expands, attention is turning to the question of capability.

Beyond project approvals, exploration success and production growth, there is now a greater emphasis on how the workforce is developed, trained and retained to meet the demands of modern operations.

The sector’s remote and complex operating environment requires a workforce with a broad mix of technical, operational and safety competencies.

From heavy equipment operation and maintenance through to process engineering, environmental management and digital systems integration, the skill requirements continue to evolve.

This has placed education and training at the centre of the industry’s future sustainability.

While P has long benefited from resource led economic activity and support from neighbouring countries, such as Australia, to create trade and industry partnerships, its development relies on the availability of skilled labour and the systems in place to develop it.

With an emphasis on training, upskilling and developing homegrown talent, the need for these systems is more important than ever.

Many companies operating in PNG’s resources sector are required to develop internal training systems that account for site specific conditions. emote operations often necessitate tailored onboarding processes and continuous upskilling programs to ensure safety and consistency across shifting work patterns.

With many operations involving heavy mobile equipment, processing plants and high-risk environments, competency-based training is essential to maintaining compliance with occupational health and safety standards.

At the same time, the adoption of automation, digital monitoring systems and advanced asset management tools is reshaping the skillset required on site. Workers are expected to engage with datadriven systems that monitor equipment performance, fuel use, production output and environmental conditions in real time.

This shift has created demand for training that extends beyond traditional skills. Digital literacy, systems analysis and remote monitoring capabilities are becoming increasingly relevant, particularly in larger-scale mining and energy projects.

Education institutions and training providers are playing an expanding role in meeting these needs.

Technical colleges, universities and vocational training centres are working alongside industry to align ualifications with sector re uirements, although gaps remain in specialist areas where international expertise is still often required.

Industry participation in training development has also become more visible as resource companies engage in partnerships with local institutions to support scholarship programs, apprenticeships and structured workforce development pathways. hese initiatives address immediate labour needs and help build a longer-term pipeline of skilled professionals within the country.

However, PNG faces several challenges which continue to impact the consistency and reach of education programs, including geographic isolation, infrastructure constraints and variability in access to training facilities.

Despite these challenges, the direction of travel across the sector is clear. As projects become more complex and capital intensive, the importance of education and workforce development is increasing.

Companies are recognising that operational efficiency, safety and productivity are closely linked to their workforce capabilities.

The resources sector is also beginning to view training as a strategic investment rather than a compliance requirement. Upskilling local workforces is being seen as a mechanism to improve operational resilience, reduce turnover and strengthen long-term community engagement in project areas.

While exploration, development and production continue to drive headlines, the sustained success of the sector will depend heavily on the ability to develop the skills, systems and institutional frameworks required to support it. PNG

One key factor of effective mine operations, often overlooked in formal training programs, is the necessity to accurately sample and manage quality, with every decision - from exploration and resource estimation through to mine planning, grade control and mineral processing - depending on integrity.

Getting more out the ground

Despite the importance of these competencies, DEKA Dynamics managing director Dennis Kattowitz said operations globally continue to experience concerns.

Forging fresh talent Newmont's four-year apprenticeship program is building a skilled, work-ready Lihirian workforce, blending technical training with long-term community investment at its PNG gold mine.

That vision is becoming increasingly important as its Lihir gold mine on Aniolam Island in the New Ireland province prepares for its next phase of growth.

The Lihir gold mine is expected to deliver approximately 30 per cent more gold by 2028, building on its existing 16-million-ounce reserve with a 15-year life, holding upside from resources and exploration.

For nearly three decades, Newmont Lihir has invested in developing its workforce in PNG, creating education, training and leadership pathways designed to equip Papua New Guineans with the skills needed to support gold operations at Lihir and across the wider mining industry in the country and abroad.

The program aims to develop a work-ready crew that can support production and investment.

At the heart of that effort is Newmont Lihir’s Technical Training Centre, established in 2008 to provide local people with nationally recognised ualifications and career opportunities.

The centre’s apprenticeship program selects young people from the community, reinforcing the company’s commitment to localisation under Lihir Gold Limited’s Mine Development Contract.

Alongside the apprenticeship program, the centre also delivers Trade Testing programs that help tradespeople within Lihir’s workforce to strengthen and qualify their skills through accreditations.

Beyond the centre, Newmont Lihir also offers opportunities to young Papua New Guineans through traineeship, industrial placement and graduate programs.

This, in turn, enables them to gain practical experience and build careers across different areas of mining operations.

The apprenticeship program provides four years of technical training across heavy e uipment fitting, electrical trades, maintenance fitting and machining, and metal fabrication and welding.

Currently, there are 68 local Lihirians progressing through the program, including 18 women entering traditionally male-dominated trades.

Newmont says increasing participation remains a key priority as it continues to build a diverse and future-ready workforce.

The company is also working to secure full national accreditation for all core trades delivered through the Technical Training Centre, a move that will further strengthen local capability and boost nationally recognised ualifications.

“In support of workforce development, our Trade Testing Program is progressing its accreditation with the National Apprenticeship and Trade Testing Board (NATTB),” said Newmont Lihir Training Lead Mavelyn Panapen.

“Following the successful completion of Belt Splicing Level 1 accreditation in May 2026, Lihir Technical Training Centre is now accredited to deliver Belt Splicing Levels 1 and 2 onsite.”

Panapen said Newmont Lihir’s technical training programs have consistently delivered strong outcomes, helping to build a pipeline of skilled tradespeople capable of supporting both the operation and the wider mining industry. he centre s track record reflects that success.

Between 2007 and 2019, several apprentices and trade test candidates received NATTB Apprentice of the Year and Trade Test Candidate of the Year awards, recognition Panapen says highlights the quality of training delivered at Lihir. hese achievements reflect the dedication of the apprentices, trainers and the broader business in developing nationally recognised trade capability,” she said.

YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT in Papua New Guinea (PNG) remains a persistent challenge, particularly for school leavers navigating the transition into the workforce. Many young people exit the education system at Grade 10 or 12, yet the cost of tertiary study often places further education out of reach.

The result is a growing cohort of capable and motivated young Papua New Guineans without clear or accessible employment pathways.

This presents both an opportunity and constraint for the resources industry. A skilled, work ready local workforce is essential to long term industry success, yet access to training, networks and foundational employability skills is not evenly distributed across communities.

Project Yumi’s Project Wok is addressing this gap through a practical and structured approach to youth empowerment. Rather than focusing on theory alone, the initiative is designed to equip participants with the tools, confidence and exposure re uired to enter and succeed in the workforce.

FOR MANY students growing up in Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) remote communities, access to quality education remains one of the biggest barriers to future opportunities. imited resources, shortages of ualified educators and the challenges of distance continue to impact learning outcomes across rural areas.

Aspiring teacher Nicholas Yawi believes technology can play a key role in changing that.

Yawi, from Yanguri Village in the Kagua–Erave District within the Petroleum Development Licence (PDL) 3 and 4 project area, recently graduated from the University of Goroka with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.

He is now taking on a postgraduate diploma in teaching, which will bring him one step closer to his goal of becoming a ualified educator.

He then hopes to return to his home in the Southern Highlands Province, where he plans to use e-library facilities and digital learning tools to improve education for the next generation.

Yawi’s study journey has been supported over the past five years by the Petroleum esources obe (PRG) Education Subsidy Program, managed by the Mineral Resources Development Company. he financial assistance has enabled awi to complete his university education while reinforcing his commitment to return home and give back to his community.

His vision has been shaped by the rollout of modern educational infrastructure funded by PRG in project communities, particularly computer laboratories equipped with e-library facilities.

Yawi believes these investments have the potential to transform the way students learn by providing access to digital resources that were previously unavailable in many remote schools.

“There are projects like e-learning facilities funded

by MRDC and PRG back at home,” he said.

“We are now living in a digital world, and students need guidance from teachers on how to use tools

At the centre of this momentum is formal government backing for key developments, including the Papua LNG project, which remains one of the country’s most significant planned gas export facilities.

Prime Minister James Marape has repeatedly reaffirmed support for ma or resource pro ects, framing them as critical to sustaining growth over the next decade and beyond.

According to Marape, Papua LNG and other developments form part of a broader energy pipeline expected to underpin long-term construction activity, production and revenue generation across PNG’s resource sector.

“There is plenty of gas already discovered and a high likelihood of further gas discoveries in the next few years.

Alongside Papua LNG, the P’nyang project in Western Province continues to be positioned as a key expansion opportunity tied to existing LNG infrastructure. Combined, these developments are expected to extend P ’s production profile well into the future, sub ect to final investment decisions and commercial structuring. ndustry analysts have also highlighted Wafi Golpu as part of the broader resources landscape supporting PNG’s export base, particularly as the country seeks to balance mining and energy-led revenue streams.

Beyond the well-established LNG corridor, attention is also shifting toward frontier exploration, including offshore basins such as the Gulf of Papua and deeper water acreage in the north and east of the country.

These areas are increasingly being discussed as potential next-generation gas provinces, particularly as seismic data and early exploration activity continues to refine prospectivity.

One emerging theme across the sector is the increasing role of gas aggregation and infrastructure connectivity. Concepts centred on linking offshore discoveries to existing processing hubs are gaining traction, particularly where proximity to established facilities could reduce development costs and improve project viability.

Fuelling K92’s expansion MasterSystem Technologies has delivered an automated fuel management solution for K92 Mining’s Kainantu operation to support greater fuel security.

AT K92 Mining’s underground gold operation in Papua New Guinea (PNG), fuel supply is a critical dependency for continuous power generation, particularly as the site advances towards its tage expansion.

To strengthen fuel availability and operational control at the Kainantu mine, MasterSystem Technologies has delivered a new power station fuel facility, which includes an automated diesel storage and dispensing system designed to support scalable generation capacity and reduce manual handling risks.

Established in 2009, MasterSystem Technologies develops integrated operational technology solutions spanning automated fuel management, fleet intelligence, IVMS, AI safety systems, infrastructure monitoring and digital mining platforms for the mining, logistics and industrial sectors.

The new K92 power station has been engineered to support an initial power demand of 8.8 megawatts MW , with expansion capability to 20MW under the current Stage 2 development.

A key driver for the installation, MasterSystem said, was the need to improve reliability and visibility across fuel movement while reducing dependency on manual intervention.

Working with K92 Mining, MasterSystem Technologies has helped the Kainantu mine strengthen operational control.

In response, the company implemented a fully automated fuel management and dispensing system that integrates storage, transfer and consumption into a single controlled network.

Tanks were installed to complement a complete system that handles fuel management, filtration tanks and automatic fuel transfer.

At the centre of the system sits MasterSystem’s SmartFill automated fuel management platform integrated with the site controller and FuelMaster software. The system automatically replenishes generator day tanks based on programmed level control logic, initiating refuelling at 30 per cent capacity and stopping at 90 per cent, eliminating manual intervention while maintaining continuous fuel availability.

All inventory movements are securely recorded within the FuelMaster database and displayed through real-time web dashboards, providing live inventory reconciliation, historical audit trails, alarms, management reporting and predictive fuel logistics.

The physical infrastructure supporting this system includes 12 self-bunded storage tanks, each with a capacity of 65,750 litres, delivering a total site capacity of 789,000 litres.

The automated and intelligent fuel system ensures refuelling before levels reach critical lows.

Established in 2009, MasterSystem Technologies develops integrated operational technology solutions.

The system is also designed with future integration capability, including interfaces for solar photovoltaic systems. The result is a fully automated intelligent fuel management platform that improves power station reliability, strengthens fuel accountability, reduces manual handling risks, enhances compliance and provides K92 with a scalable digital infrastructure to support future mine expansion.

his configuration provides a minimum four day fuel autonomy at full 20MW load, aligning with operational continuity requirements for the power station.

Redundancy has been embedded throughout the design. All tanks and pumps are interconnected through a common pipeline network, ensuring any discharge pump can access any storage tank.

The facility is also connected to K92’s Main Fuel Farm via a two-inch underground transfer line, enabling additional flexibility for fuel movement between systems when required.

The distribution of fuel is managed on site through dual discharge pumps, each equipped with manifolded inlet systems, flow metering and integrated safety controls. Tank inlet solenoids and automated control logic ensure fuel is only transferred under authorised conditions, or when required, and can be overridden by manual inputs to ensure even greater visibility and control.

At the dispensing end, submersible pumps supply fuel directly to generators through an automated demand-based system linked to day tank level switches. This ensures fuel is delivered when re uired and halted at predefined thresholds, maintaining stable generator operation while preventing overfill conditions.

The modular architecture also provides a scalable platform for future integration with additional storage, mine-wide fuel distribution, mobile refuelling assets, ERP platforms, solar photovoltaic systems and battery energy storage technologies.

Intelligent insights PAPUA NEW Guinea (PNG) is home to some of the world’s most challenging mining environments.

Rugged terrain, hard rock and heavy rainfall combine to place extraordinary demands on haul trucks, with tyres bearing the brunt of these harsh operating conditions.

Identifying small issues before they become major failures can help mines avoid costly downtime, with Kal Tire’s KalPRO TireSight autonomous inspections being an ideal solution.

Using advanced thermal imaging cameras and artificial intelligence A , powered by Pitcrew A , TireSight automatically detects tyre-related issues that could otherwise go unnoticed, including hot tyres, tread damage and belt edge separation before they escalate.

While the technologies rely on advanced data collection, Kal Tire Australia vice president Caleb Pullella said the value lies in combining AI with the company’s TOMS (Tire & Operations Management System) and experienced conditionmonitoring analysts. ogether, they filter findings, validate priorities and recommend an appropriate response before tyre technicians act. his allows fleet planning teams to uickly make decisions that reduce risk, prevent further tyre damage and minimise e uipment downtime, so mines can keep their haul trucks running safely and productively, while getting more out of their tyres.

“Teams on the ground can use the technology to inspect the tyres based on what the system has identified or stop it from operating completely to prevent a tyre failure,” Pullella said.

“Instead of having an unforeseen breakdown, we can then plan a maintenance schedule which best suits the customer and their production to repair the physical damage to the tyre, so it doesn’t get worse.”

Pullella said the philosophy behind the development of the TireSight system was that the technology needs to be backed up by on-the-ground support to provide better and more insightful outcomes.

Kal Tire is combining AI-powered monitoring with expert analysis to help mines reduce tyre damage, improve their haulage routes and lift site productivity.

“There is a lot of great technology, but it doesn’t resolve problems for customers by itself. It’s the application and the service that you can provide to get them the desired result and the value from that technology.

Beyond the tyre Building on TireSight, Kal Tire recently launched a new autonomous inspection offering that provides greater visibility into the conditions under which haul trucks operate.

Rather than focusing on tyres themselves, KalPRO HaulSight utilises Decoda’s LiDAR and camera sensors on the front and rear of the truck to identify hazards across haul roads, such as spillage, road undulations and high G-force zones.

These conditions can contribute to both tyre and e uipment damage, while also impacting productivity and fuel consumption.

According to Pullella, these impacts can shorten tyre life and transfer additional loads to the machine itself, making it important to address not only the road conditions but also how e uipment is operated in those areas.

With HaulSight, mining operations can identify and prioritise haul road improvements, extend tyre life and minimise haul truck downtime.

“HaulSight essentially maps out where those hazardous operating conditions are, so the site team can go and action what’s re uired while focusing on prioritised areas,” Pullella said.

Although HaulSight’s primary focus is on haul roads, Kal Tire is already exploring ways to extend its benefits across mine sites.

“We are looking at ways of sending the information from HaulSight to grader operators while they’re out in the field, so they can action the re uired improvements to haul roads,” Pullella said.

The capabilities of both TireSight and HaulSight could prove especially valuable in PNG’s mining sector.

P is very uni ue in terms of the mining environment in which we operate,” Pullella said. enerally, mining e uipment and the tyres have a harsher life in heavy rainfall and hard rock environments compared to what you’d see in other operating conditions, so being able to provide valuable insights into this will give PNG customers the opportunity to create the best conditions possible.

While the technologies have not yet been deployed in PNG, early discussions with customers are already underway.

Pullella said feedback from early adopters in other markets shows the greatest benefits come when the technology is paired with Kal Tire’s condition monitoring expertise.

“Every company will use the technology and the service slightly differently,” Pullella said.

“It’s all about aligning the use case and identifying how they need to get value from the service. Getting that alignment there is crucial.”

The next gold powerhouse With Papua New Guinea’s resources sector continuing to attract global attention, K92 Mining is making strategic investments to support its long-term growth.

K92 MINING is continuing to strengthen its position as one of Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) fastestgrowing gold producers, making significant progress across exploration, sustainability and corporate leadership over the past year.

From expanding the high-grade Arakompa discovery near its Kainantu gold mine to reporting strong environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and strengthening its board with experienced mining leadership, the company has continued to advance on multiple fronts. ne of 2’s most significant developments has been the continued success of drilling at the Arakompa deposit, located approximately 4.5 kilometres from the Kainantu gold mine processing plant.

The company’s sixth round of drilling results confirmed a large, high grade gold system, with near-surface mineralisation that could support future growth.

K92 reported that 40 drill intersections returned more than five grams per tonne g t gold e uivalent (AuEq), with 20 of those exceeding double-digit grades. Standout results included an intersection of . metres at 4. g t Au , including . m at 2.4 g t Au .

Drilling at the AR1 vein has extended and upgraded a continuous high-grade zone over approximately 400m of strike, and additional high grades have been confirmed at the A 2 vein.

K92 chief executive John Lewins said the results from Arakompa represent another important step towards advancing the discovery to a maiden resource estimate “Drilling continues to demonstrate a large, nearsurface mineralised system, highlighted by the significant expansion and improved continuity of the AR1 high-grade zone and the delineation of a substantial high-grade bulk tonnage zone,” he said.

This sentiment was echoed by K92 vice president of exploration Robert Smillie.

“The latest results continue to reinforce why Arakompa has become a major focus of our exploration efforts, with every phase of drilling revealing new opportunities for growth,” Smillie said.

Investing in people and communities K92’s latest sustainability report highlighted continued investment in its workforce and surrounding communities, alongside success in exploration activity.

The 2025 report outlined improvements across ESG performance while detailing ongoing operational progress at the Kainantu gold mine.

Safety was a major focus for the operation, recording 918 days without a lost-time injury and a total recordable injury frequency rate of 0.62.

NEW INVESTMENT, expanding operations, and emerging technologies are creating fresh opportunities across Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) mining sector and the wider resources supply chain, with opportunities for growth more clear than ever.

This momentum was ever-present at PNG Expo 2026, where 928 attendees gathered at The Stanley Hotel and Suites in Port Moresby on July 1–2 for two days of discussion, networking and industry collaboration.

The event brought together 100 exhibiting companies, 43 speakers and 181 decision-makers from across PNG’s mining, energy, resources and industrial fields, marking the most successful edition of PNG Expo to date.

When it came to an industry operating across geographically dispersed and often challenging environments, the opportunity to meet face-to-face carried particular significance.

Miners, contractors, equipment manufacturers, engineering companies, government representatives and service providers were provided a platform to exchange ideas, examine new technologies and establish relationships extending beyond the exhibition floor.

“The response to PNG Expo 2026 exceeded our expectations and demonstrated just how important this event has become for the country’s mining and industrial sectors,” Hancock said.

“The exhibition brought together the people, technologies and businesses driving PNG’s resources industry and its future growth, creating an environment where valuable conversations quickly turned into genuine business opportunities that could reshape the industry.”

The composition of the audience highlighted the breadth of industries contributing to PNG’s resources economy, with mining, resources and heavy industry professionals representing 40 per cent of attendees, while engineering, technology and industrial solutions accounted for a further quarter (25 per cent).

Energy, utilities and infrastructure professionals made up 15 per cent of the audience, followed by manufacturing, supply and services at 10 per cent.

Government, education and industry bodies, together with professional services and other industries, each represented five per cent.

The seniority of those attending was equally as significant, as managers and business leaders accounted for almost half of delegates (47.8 per cent), while C-suite executives, executive directors, engineers and technical specialists brought operational and strategic expertise to discussions throughout the event.

Among many other topics, the event spoke on public health in remote mining regions, highlighting the importance of workplace conditions.

This concentration of decision-makers helped ensure discussions were frequently centred on practical operational requirements, procurement opportunities, technological applications and the partnerships needed to support future projects.

“The diversity and quality of exhibitors and attendees reflected the strength of P ’s mining industry and the confidence businesses have in its future,” Hancock said.

Across the exhibition floor, established mining companies appeared alongside global original equipment manufacturers, technology specialists and local service providers.

Major resources companies in attendance included Ok Tedi Mining Limited, Newmont, Harmony Gold Mining ompany, 2 Mining, PanAust, eopacific esources, reat Pacific old, umul Petroleum Holdings, Twinza Oil & Gas PNG and Santos.

They were joined by equipment and technology businesses such as Komatsu, XCMG, Sandvik and Hastings Deering, as well as organisations supporting PNG’s essential infrastructure, including Water PNG and PNG Power.

PNG Expo provided a setting in which each part of the supply chain could better understand the pressures and priorities facing the others.

New equipment and technical solutions attracted significant interest, but the value of the event was not limited to the products displayed.

Exhibitors could hear directly from mine operators about the challenges affecting their sites, while delegates could assess how available technologies might improve safety, reliability, productivity and operational performance.

These conversations were complemented by the PNG Expo Conference, which delivered two days of presentations, panel discussions and practical industry insights.

The conference program explored the opportunities and challenges facing PNG’s resources sector, with sessions examining digital transformation, operational technology, safety, responsible development, community partnerships and workforce capability. epresentatives from k edi Mining, reat Pacific Gold, Kumul Petroleum and Harmony Gold were among those contributing to the program, bringing perspectives from across mining, exploration, energy and infrastructure.

Speakers included Ok Tedi Mining general manager engineering and infrastructure Franz Hemetsberger, reat Pacific old vice president exploration allum Spink, Hexagon senior radar monitoring specialist Simon Pitt and TE (PNG) Limited chief executive officer obbie uxley.

Presentations highlighted the combination of technology, investment and collaboration required to advance P ’s resources industry.

Digital transformation was a particularly important theme, and as mining operations adopt more connected equipment and data-led systems, companies are gaining new ways to monitor performance, identify hazards and make betterinformed operational decisions.

Yet the conference also reinforced that technology alone cannot deliver lasting development, and that new systems must be supported by appropriate infrastructure, skilled workers and strong relationships between companies, governments and host communities.

Workforce development therefore remained central to the conference, reflecting the need to e uip Papua New Guineans with the technical and professional capabilities required by an evolving industry.

Discussions considered how companies can develop local skills, strengthen operational capability and create enduring employment opportunities.

They also explored the role partnerships can play in ensuring investment delivers benefits extending beyond individual projects.

The event’s collaborative atmosphere began before the exhibition formally opened, with welcome drinks sponsored by Tricab bringing together all those in attendance.
