CAPE DUNSTANS
Cape Dunstans excels in delivering complex horizontal directional drilling (HDD) projects in Australia’s most environmentally sensitive areas. With advanced engineering, expert teams, and a sophisticated HDD fleet, we provide precise, reliable, and low-impact solutions. A notable project is the 900m Nerang River crossing on the Gold Coast, involving drilling beneath the river, Light Rail, and Sundale Bridge. Using dual rigs, gyroscopic and radar guidance, and a continuous drill string, the crossing was completed incident-free. The 1200mm HDPE pipe was towed 5km along the Nerang River and Broadwater with careful planning to protect the environment.

TITEFLOW®
Water is life’s essential, and a continuous, reliable supply is vital for a healthy community. Maintaining – or improving –the flow capacity can be key to the success of a rehabilitation project. Low impact and versatile, Titeflow is Interflow’s proprietary die-reduction lining solution. Like slip lining, Titeflow installs a brand-new, industry-standard HDPE pipe inside an existing pipeline without the need for full open cut excavation. The difference lies in the installation method, which allows for a tighter fit and maximum hydraulic capacity. Titeflow is a trenchless solution suitable for pressure pipes ranging from 90 to 900mm.

Trenchless technology explained
Technology explained
An introduction for the uninitiated.
Trenchless technology has been used on water, wastewater, energy and communications infrastructure for decades; however, the techniques and methods available now are more sophisticated, accurate and reliable than ever before, and are successfully used across a wide range of industries.
Trenchless technology refers to a variety of techniques used to install, repair, replace, inspect and locate underground infrastructure while minimising surface disruption.
Benefits
The benefits of trenchless technology are numerous:
• Minimising social impacts, like traffic delays
• Causing less environmental damage
• Reducing health and safety risks
• Increasing sustainability
As a result of the increase in applications, trenchless contractors are highly experienced and well resourced. In addition, companies are investing in research and new equipment to ensure the continued development of the industry.
This is reflected in the Australasian trenchless industry. Ageing infrastructure, water restrictions, urban encroachment and environmental concerns have
all provided the stimulus for more trenchless projects, while the sophistication of the technology and experience of the companies involved has meant that the industry has been able to deliver on its promise.
Companies, utilities and governments involved with the construction and rehabilitation of infrastructure now consider trenchless technology an important method at their disposal, allowing organisations to take advantage of the benefits of the technology and the knowledge of experienced practitioners.
The potential uses for trenchless technology are diverse. Whether infrastructure crosses under a road, an airport strip, a river, a front garden or past existing infrastructure –trenchless is the smart, desirable and economic choice.
History of trenchless in Australasia
In October 1989, the Water Resources Council conducted a twoday seminar on trenchless technology in Perth, Western Australia.
A panel discussion at the end of the seminar with some 170 delegates from Australia and New Zealand agreed that an independent organisation, to be called Australian Society for Trenchless Technology, should be formed.
The society was incorporated in 1991 and has been affiliated with the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT) since.
In June 1994, the society’s name was changed to the Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT), with membership expanded to include New Zealand.
Since its creation, the ASTT has worked to promote the use of trenchless technology in Australia and New Zealand, fostering the establishment of the sector in the region.
Since the mid-1990s, as the technology have become more prevalent, unit costs have generally decreased and strong track records have been established.
Authorities and other organisations have come to appreciate the benefits of trenchless technology, resulting in a wide acceptance of these proven techniques.
For the most part, areas of the industry responsible for providing essential infrastructure, such as water, wastewater and energy networks. It has also embraced the social, environmental and cost benefits that trenchless technology provides.
The development and use of trenchless technology will continue to grow as it provides effective and beneficial solutions to these demands
and controls, while meeting needs for environmentally friendly and sustainable construction methods.
Power in numbers
The membership base of the ASTT is continually growing, another reflection of the strength of the market in Australasia.
The number of members has grown from 35, when the ASTT was inaugurated, to more than 200 in 2019 to over 300 in 2025.
Since it was established, the ASTT has been a worldwide leader in the development of trenchless technology. Australasian companies have been recognised several times at the ISTT’s prestigious No-Dig Awards for their contributions to the advancement of the technology.
The region has also fostered the development of many innovative techniques and products.
In 2011, the ASTT produced a commemorative book, Trenchless Technology in Australasia: Celebrating 20 years of the ASTT, followed by a second commemorative book in 2021, celebrating 30 years.
A bright future
Trenchless technology is now common in the renewal of underground infrastructure such
as pipelines, sewers and electrical cables. In many applications, what was once used only occasionally has now become the preferred method.
Organisations such as Sydney Water – Australia’s largest water utility – have integrated trenchless technology into their annual report, highlighting the growing importance trenchless plays within councils and utilities.
This growth has been assisted by increased awareness of the technology and its capabilities, improving economies of scale, and rising concerns for sustainable and environmentally friendly construction solutions.
No-dig methods are leading the way as a solution to tackle the maintenance of ageing infrastructure.
Trenchless methods are no longer an expensive alternative, instead offering more for less, in a political climate where government is being forced to act on climate change and promote sustainability.
For all these reasons, and more, trenchless technology is becoming the favoured choice.
As utilities and other organisations continue to recognise these advantages, the industry will grow, mature and provide ever more innovative underground solutions throughout Australasia and the world.
