T

he effect American politics has on the Wide Brown Land – and those who care for it – is frustrating. Right now, it’s not only frustrating but expensive. The Australian stock market is going through real torment in response to American financial policy, and whether you have investments in the money market or not, you will be feeling it. I often tell people after a bout of bad weather that, “The grass is lush, the cows are fat and the farmers are all buying new tractors.” The point of that is, although the bad weather isn’t pleasant, the aftermath, the flow on, if you like, is positive, and it filters through the tiny economy of my small town.

There’s no guarantee the American manoeuvres will have a positive outcome for Australians – in fact, right now it’s hard to see the situation as anything but aggressive and

damaging – but it’s important businesses do their best to hold on and be prepared for whatever changes are on their way.

It might be a time to keep one eye on the financial landscape while the other is on the landscaping work schedule for the near future. Prices on some items are likely to skyrocket and work is probably going to be harder to find as potential customers clamp down on spending.

But we’re a resilient nation, and landscapers are a tough and thoughtful crew. There will be opportunities for those quick-witted enough to see them and flexible enough to take advantage of them.

And while I can’t predict movements in the financial markets – even less so American politics – there’s a certainty for all of us: Australians love their homes and properties,

and they love those homes and properties to look good and be well cared for.

No matter how grim things may look in the short term, professionals who design, build and care for properties in Australia, and who do those things well, will always be in demand.

And as long as the landscaping industries are grooming this nation, Landscape Contractor magazine will be here supporting those industries.

We all need to be ready to adapt to whatever’s coming our way, and there’s nothing new in that.

ince new homes tend to be built on smaller lots, we are increasingly searching for innovative ways to keep installing backyard swimming pools. In many cases, this is bread and butter for landscapers. There is much value-add to be had in the form of the pool equipment and surrounds, paving, fencing, gardens and the design and construction of the adjacent outdoor entertainment area.

Pressure has been mounting on pool builders in recent years to bring to market new ways to enjoy our traditional Aussie pastime.

Enter the plunge pool.

Jet stream

Prefabrication methods of construction and materials, mini excavators, motorised wheelbarrows and conveyer systems have

allowed us to build swimming pools deemed too hard in the past – so a plunge pool is the logical outcome as a space-saving option.

A plunge pool is a small, shallow pool built for lounging, wading, and cooling off, but can be adapted to include swimming and the therapeutic benefits of a spa.

Many homeowners prefer a plunge pool because of its lower initial cost, smaller size, easier maintenance, and reduced water, chemical and ongoing electricity requirements.

Some plunge pools come with a seating ledge running the length of the pool, perfect for relaxing with friends or splashing with the kids, while others come with a wading area for small children.

They can be equipped with jets that provide a whirlpool effect for a gentle fullbody massage. Add a heater for hydrotherapy

and health, and maybe a swim jet for exercise, and your clients have a health and fitness centre in their backyard.

Current affairs

The exercise jet creates a very strong current to swim against while being tethered.

Swimming is good for everyone. It improves coordination and posture, and is a total-body workout which strengthens the heart, causing its pumping action to become more refined. That leads to better blood circulation.

Swimming also helps affected joints and decreases pain from osteoarthritis.

Image: OceanProd/stock.adobe.com Made from concrete and fibreglass, they usually measure about 5m x 3m and are 1.5m deep for the full length. Some slope down to about 1.8m deep. As for the volume of water: 4.5m x 2.45m x 1.4m = 12,000 litres.

There’s a plunge pool to suit all budgets. It may not add to the capital value of a home, but it adds greatly to the home’s attraction when selling, which means a quicker sale.

Landscapers looking for a ready-made budget solution to have up and running within a week should start shopping. Swim Spas come in a range of shapes and sizes starting at around $10,000.

Plunge-pool owners should be encouraged to install optional equipment. Consider offering your clients year-round heating systems, LED light displays (white, red, blue and green) with remotes, and awesome water features to create something very special in their landscape.

TIP: Decreasing the occurrence and amount of wind going across the pool will cut down on evaporation. Plant pool-area shrubs and use fences or privacy screening as protection.

Materials

Concrete is generally more expensive than fibreglass due to its onsite handcrafting and solid materials. So, a starting budget 10

of around $30,000 is required for a small concrete pool. The economies of scale don’t start until around 7m x 3m x 1.5m in size and being away from buildings and boundaries with good access for a standard Bobcat.

TIP: Think about a wet-edge overflow (vanishing edge) when there is a view to enjoy. If time frames are tight and space is limited, consider using the makers of compact precast concrete plunge pools that come in a range of four sizes at australianplungepools.com.au. They can generally be installed in a day, and standard features include: • Fully tiled with glass mosaic tiles • Engineered drawings • Fully reinforced concrete shell • Granite coping • Seating (1.7m tiled bench seat) with step • Pool light • Flow and return pipe work • Pressure-relief valve, and • Solar-blanket pool cover.

If your clients want chemical-free, try a water neutral pool which utilises both water-saving and water-harvesting devices to minimise mains water use. It requires a water tank to collect rainfall to top-up the pool as needed, and a pool cover and backwash minimisation system to prevent excessive backwashing (eg: cartridge filter, oversized

sand filter, centrifugal/pre-filter device, backwash recycle system, and so forth).

TIP: When quoting for the installation of a concrete or fibreglass plunge pool, ensure it will comply with Australian Standard (AS) 1838:1994

Heat treatment

Heating a plunge pool makes it usable every day of the year. The three types of heating are electric, gas and solar. They can be used separately or in conjunction with each other.

Electric heat pumps use electricity to capture heat and move it from one place to another in the same way an air conditioner works. As the pool pump circulates the water, the water is drawn from the pool and passes through the filter and heat pump, heat is transferred and the water warmed before being returned to the pool.

Heat pumps work efficiently if the outside temperature remains above 10 degrees.

However, it’s important to remember it takes more energy to heat colder water.

TIP for customers: Run any pool pump only for as long as needed. If the pool water starts to get cloudy, run it a bit more each day until it clears. Different run periods are required in summer and winter.

easily raise the water temperature by 12 to 15 degrees in about 24 hours. You simply set your desired temperature on the control panel or via a remote control. Once the desired temperature is reached, the system will automatically maintain that temperature.

Gas heating systems must be installed by licensed plumbers and gas fitters who can advise, depending on your area, if it’s available.

With solar heating, pool water is circulated through a series of tubes installed on a roof, and as this water is being circulated, it’s heated by the sun, increasing the water’s temperature by up to 10 degrees before being returned to the pool. The temperature of the water can be managed by an automatic control system. Once installed, it’s just the cost of running the pump. For this reason, it’s the most cost-effective option when it comes to pool-heating solutions. It conserves energy and it’s an environmentally friendly solution, as solar heating the pool produces zero greenhouse emissions and reduces household energy use.

Pooling resources

When pool water is left uncovered, it naturally evaporates. A solar pool cover can reduce water evaporation by up to 97 per cent, providing savings of between 50,000-70,000 litres of water a year, depending on where in Australia the pool is situated. By preventing evaporation, chemical consumption of the pool will also be reduced by 50-70 per cent (figures based on the Bureau of Meteorology’s annual evaporation rates of an outdoor pool with a surface area of 40m2).

Once heated, if the pool’s not being used, a pool blanket eliminates evaporation, reduces chlorine and chemical loss, reduces dust and leaves falling into the pool, helps retain the heat and so reduces future energy consumption.

Not all landscapers can construct swimming pools, but plunge pools are within the reach of all landscapers with good project-scheduling skills and a tight team.

If you’re still unsure of your abilities, team up with a colleague for your first project to get experience. It might become a lucrative strategic partnership.

To do so requires some strategic thinking, so the question to be asked is: does your attitude and the attitude of your employees accurately reflect the image of your business? And more importantly, the expectations of your client group?

The right questions

Fail to plan, plan to fail

It’s been said the landscape industry in some areas has become oversaturated with new startups entering the sector, largely driven by the low barrier to entry. Not only are you competing against fellow professionals, but also against unlicensed operators. It seems anyone with a ute, a shovel and a dog is a landscaper.

These informal competitors often undercut prices, posing a challenge for established, licensed businesses. There are many players who are driving down pricing for their services while costs are continuously increasing, and this isn’t good for the industry

The key to business success starts with planning, and the adage ‘fail to plan, plan to fail’ rings true. There’s a litany of failed landscape businesses left wallowing in the dust behind those who have detailed business plans, goals, and a vision of where their enterprise is headed and what they have to offer. Understanding your market and what the existing service providers in your area are offering will give some indication of how to define your market.

The good news is a predicted increase in market growth in the landscape sector over the next five years, driven by mounting

population pressure. Increased housing demand will drive spending on new gardens and maintenance of existing landscapes.

At a time when instant gratification seems to be the doctrine of a generation accustomed to fast foods, fast cars and fast download times, is it any wonder we’re demanding even more in all other areas of our lives, including business and leisure?

Customer satisfaction isn’t just concerned with how rapidly our needs can be filled, but also by the quality with which a product, service or advice can be delivered to fulfill our needs.

How does this influence us in the interface with our clients?

First, it provides us with an opportunity to reflect on what it is we’re really offering our clients. No matter what business you are involved in, under the surface you are really in the business of human relationships.

Your employees are just as important to your business as your customers.

You need to answer this question honestly.

It would be easy to answer ‘yes’, but a quick check of your business plan will give you some insight.

Remember change is inevitable, but growth is optional, and if growth is what you are looking for in your business, and you haven’t reviewed your business plan in the last 12 months – or worse still, don’t have a business plan – start planning.

Your success, however, is not dependant on how well you plan, but on how well you work your plan.

Changing fortunes

In the current economic climate, the greatest challenge faced by the landscape industry is the same as many other business sectors: a severe labour shortage.

The ability of any enterprise to attract and retain skilled, qualified workers is becoming increasingly difficult as industries compete 18

against each other on working conditions and wages to attract and, more importantly, retain skilled staff.

Regarding skills, it’s crucial to have the right mix of skilled labour to meet your enterprise needs. Clearly identify the skills crucial for the services you offer and the expertise you need. Make sure you also identify where you can find talent, such as reaching out to vocational-education providers, including TAFE and private providers or industry-specific associations.

Once you’ve attracted employees, consider your ability to train them. How can you ensure they meet your standards while keeping training costs down? You could explore traineeships or cost-effective training solutions, and utilising specific non-accredited industry-sector training opportunities.

Invest in the future

Your employees are just as important to your business as your customers.

Employees with job satisfaction are loyal and an asset to a business’ success. The challenge lies in attracting and retaining

the right talent - those who are skilled and passionate about their work.

The most basic and important factors to consider when choosing the right candidate for your landscaping business are passion for the industry, commitment, and preferably a skillset aligned to landscaping solutions. No matter how qualified an employee is, if they’re not passionate about the trade they may become a liability.

Offering fair and attractive remuneration is also essential to employee satisfaction, but consider other incentives like career-development opportunities, gym memberships, and a positive work environment. Elements such as these contribute to higher job satisfaction.

Recognition and reward programs have long been used in large organisations as a motivator to improve performance. After all, who doesn’t like being told they are doing a good job and are a valued member of the team? For example, consider implementing a bonus system rewarding employees for exceptional customer service or bringing in new business leads. This will motivate your team and align their goals with your growth objectives and company vision. Other effective strategies to build team cohesion include regular team-building activities, open communication channels, and responsive management practices.

As this issue of Landscape Contractor goes to print, we are facing a federal election. No doubt the outcome will have an impact on the Australian industrial landscape, and it’s those businesses with solid business plans, clearly defined by goals, objectives and a vision based on market analysis, that will weather any storms ahead as we navigate unchartered waters in a new political environment.

A

re some of your plants looking unwell?

Are any completely dying back? Maybe just certain branches? Are the branches and trunks discoloured, splitting or oozing sap? Is healthy fruit rotting on the plant?

Sounds like you might have a soil-borne disease.

As the name suggests, soil-borne diseases are plant illnesses caused by fungi, bacteria, water molds and, occasionally, virus. They live in the soil and infect plants through their roots, shoots or the base of stems and trunks. Most are cunning and quite difficult to manage. In many cases they are impossible to eradicate. Some rely on spreading by hitching a ride with soil pests like microscopic eelworms (nematodes), but most diseases are spread over distances by our dirty work boots, tools, machinery or anything else that can relocate soil from one place to another.

Once they’re in a new garden, they travel easily through water and adore wet, oxygenstarved soil.

We don’t have enough time to tackle all of them, so let’s focus on the most destructive plant disease in Australia.

Phytophthora

It’s a mouthful to say and easily misspelt.

Most of us have heard of it but what’s it all about?

The name, when translated from Greek, 20

means ‘Plant Destroyer’ and that says it all.

It’s a diverse genus of around 200 species worldwide and around 60 have been detected in Australia. All species are introduced, which means virtually none of our native plants have resistance to the aggressive nature of the disease.

As this is an introduced organism, our native ecologies have little or nothing to control the disease (think feral cats and cane toads). These diseases are relevant to our workplace, many of the popular native plants such as Banksias, Grevilleas and expensive Xanthorea (Grass trees) have little resistance. In fact, most ornamental plants are susceptible to at least one of the many species of the Plant Destroyer.

Phytophthora is an unusual type of organism known as ‘water mold’. It’s neither a fungus nor a bacteria and produces babies called zoospores which swim through any film of moisture, whether it’s above or below ground. These zoospores search out specific hosts like, for example, Citrus trees for P. citrophthora or Potatoes for P. infestans.

Several are unspecialised species like the destructive variety P. cinnamomi, which looks for any opportunity to attach itself to susceptible plants or the trunk flare of a specimen that was planted too deeply.

Underground movement

Yep. Root, collar or crown rot is generally caused by various species of Phytophthora.

These varieties of the disease focus on attacking the base or crown of the plant and its roots. Naturally, as the roots become further infected they’re unable to supply the foliage with water and nutrients. This results in wilting leaves, stunted growth or, in advanced cases, the plant completely collapsing or dying within a couple of days.

Other species within the genus have the ability to invade the roots then travel up through the sap tissue to rot the fruit and soft, young, growing tips. Other species create sap-oozing cankers or lesions on the trunks and branches which spread their spores via rainfall, irrigation or our raincoats.

More species are being discovered that have specific tastes for only a few, but unrelated, plants. One variety, P hibernalis, not only loves to infect citrus, turning the fruit to brown mush, but was discovered in 2023 to be killing Eucalyptus trees through Portugal.

Huge plantation forests (along with citrus orchards) through southern Europe are now at risk.

Resilient

Phytophthora is trouble for the environment and our food production, and we landscape professionals have an important role to play in minimising its spread.

This disease is beyond ruthless. When conditions aren’t favourable, instead of punching out baby zoospores to search out more plants to kill, it will create dormant

spores that can survive for extended dry periods. Once the wet conditions return, the chlamydospores will spring to life and resume carnage.

Unlike a parasite that prefers to keep its host alive, Phytophthora is so effective at reproducing and finding new victims it’s happy to kill the host while its offspring move on to kill others. In fact, the principal role of this disease in its natural environment is to kill weakened plants quickly so space is created for healthy, resistant or appropriate plants to take its place. It kills forests, crops, and, when conditions are right, the landscape asset.

What do I do?

Don’t bother looking at hardware stores or garden centres for chemicals to control Phytophthora, because apart from diluted phosphonic acids such as anti-rot, there aren’t any. The handful of registered fungicides are not freely available to the public due to the risk of the disease developing resistance to the chemicals.

Much like antibiotics, overusing these chems improperly is seeing rapid resistance The most effective way to control Phytophthora and all other soil-borne diseases is to maintain a healthy soil ecology by practicing effective horticulture. Part of effective horticulture or smart gardening is having systems in place that reduce the opportunity for pests and diseases to take advantage of weakened plants or a compromised soil profile. The foundation of effective horticulture is having integrated pest and disease management systems in place to ideally prevent or control the pest or disease trying ruin your garden (and reputation).

The program will involve a combination of cultural, biological, chemical, and mechanical strategies to prevent or manage the disease.

Here’s my suggestions for controlling Phytophthora and most other soil-borne diseases…

• Culture: this means taking your horticulture seriously. Cultural practices are essential for preventing and minimising the spread.

You need to include actions that will improve plant health and reduce disease presence in the landscape.

• Improve drainage: disease thrives in poorly drained and anaerobic soils. Ensure the soil is well drained and has sufficient organic matter at the correct depths. Consider installing inspection wells within the garden beds to monitor moisture content.

• Avoid overwatering: excess water encourages the growth and spread of soil diseases. Water only when it is required, water at the base of each plant (not

infected plant material. That’ll help slow the spread of pathogen. If the plant’s badly diseased, remove it.

It’s important to remove the plant material in a hygienic manner so crap doesn’t spill into non-infected areas.

There are practices such as fallowing or solarising which are appropriate for crops, but less so for an ornamental garden or landscape asset. You can read about those online.

Garden management

Excess moisture and deep plantings invite collar rot disease. everywhere), and ensure the soil surface and the soil in general - is not consistently wet or puddled.

Keep it clean!

Prevent spreading the disease within the current, and to other, gardens. You and your team could be spreading it everywhere.

Avoid moving infected soil or plant material to clean areas, start work in the clean areas and finish in the infected areas, remove and destroy infected plant material immediately to reduce disease populations, and be mindful not to move soil or plant material from infected to clean areas.

In public areas, rope off sections and provide a sign explaining quarantine practices.

Creating optimal environmental conditions for plant health is crucial to preventing diseases occurring. Use coarse mulch to maintain plenty of air movement through the soil profile and to reduce compaction. Avoid using fine mulch like compost (although they look good, they hinder air movement by compacting easily and maintaining a moist soil surface), and allow the soil to dry out between watering events. This reduces the incidence of root rot and, again, helps the soil breathe.

Monitor for early detection

• Catch infections early to reduce their impact.

• Regularly inspect plants for early symptoms of disease, such as wilting, leaf yellowing, root rot, and lesions at the base of the plant, and • Obtain pathology testing on a periodic basis.

If you’re not sure or need help, engage specialists and learn from them.

Plant selection and planting

• Use plant varieties resistant to Phytophthora species • Minimise infections around the base of the plant • Plant slightly raised above the soil level, and • Increase diversity within the planting scheme to reduce the risk of significant plant losses.

Putting those three highlights to the test seemed a good place to start a review of the American-made zero turn, and Mat Wandmaker – serial Landscape Contractor machine reviewer and director at Blue Ridge Property Maintenance – the ideal operator to put the Hustler through its paces.

But as we stared at the challenge of a shaggy, leaf-strewn block in need of real attention, we wondered if were asking a bit much of the Super Z. As it turned out, both Mat and the Hustler made the heavy work look very easy indeed.

Power

The 999cc air-cooled Kawasaki V-twin engine definitely sounds like it’s aching to get to work. It chuckles into life with a low, throaty growl that can make the hair on a real man’s knuckles stand on end. The more we listened to it warming up and settling into a surprisingly low-volume idle, the less likely we thought the challenge of the unkempt property would be.

And so it turned out.

After what seemed a very short time Mat Wandmaker had a sizable portion of the property looking ready for a village garden party, and when it came to flag him down to talk to the camera he was obviously enjoying himself and didn’t want to stop.

“Love the engine!” he grinned as he pulled up to give his report. “This mower has got some speed, too,” he chortled.

We were at a site Blue Ridge Property Maintenance serviced regularly, so Mat had an excellent background to make a judgement on the Hustler.

“We would normally do this property and it would take us an hour-and-a-half or two hours,” Mat mused. “I could probably get this done in half-an-hour with the Hustler. It went through stuff so quick.”

Sitting pretty

Once we finally managed to move Mat onto some of the other aspects of the Super Z HyperDrive Rear Discharge, we were able to get his thoughts on the quality of the cut and the ease of use.

“It’s dry here in Victoria at the moment,” he explained, “but the Hustler has gone through this long grass really nicely. The big 72-inch rear discharge has left the grass nice and flat and there’s no clumping…it’s great.

“And in terms of the Hyperdrive, it’s really good because it’s got a huge oil reservoir, and everything’s supercool. On hot days like we’ve had in Victoria lately, I can keep mowing, day in and day out, and it stays cool.

It’s nice, and it just keeps going.”

Of course we wanted to know about operator comfort, and Mat’s eyes lit up again.

Case study

Kobelco and Gingex Kobelco machinery has played a big part in one Brisbane-based landscaper’s journey to success.

T

ony Kelly’s passion for the industry ignited while working for a previous employer on civil-construction projects. He was particularly intrigued by the streetscape works, such as landscaping, fencing, and retaining walls.

“One day I saw the work that was going on and decided to put my hand up and give it a go,” Tony explained.

This decision set him on a path that eventually led to the creation of his own business, Gingex, formerly known as Ginger Landscaping.

Digging in

Venturing boldly into the trade, Tony immersed himself in both civil construction and landscaping, steadily building his practical knowledge and experience. After years of navigating between the two fields, Tony relocated from Canberra to Brisbane, where Gingex was born.

When Tony started Gingex, he had no experience running a business. The first five years were challenging as he navigated the commercial landscape and sought out the right equipment for his growing company, trialling a variety of machinery in search of the perfect fit. He began with a Vermeer stand-on loader, then after a year, added a car-licence tipper, which worked well for his residential landscaping jobs and as a tow vehicle. Eventually, this was upgraded to a larger-capacity tipper as he shifted focus to excavation works, which he still uses today.

His first machine was a great asset for landscaping, helping him move material quickly across job sites. However, as Gingex shifted focus to earthworks, the loader became less efficient for his needs.

Initially, Tony had another brand excavator, but his bad experiences with the local dealership led him to look at alternative makes. A special promotion on the Kobelco SK17 caught his eye, and his interactions with Marco Marabini, his local sales rep from BrisVegas, solidified his decision.

Marco, who has himself amassed an industry following on Instagram (@kobelco_ marco), connected with Tony through social media, eventually meeting in person at the Toowoomba Field Days. After a thorough inspection of the machine and a prompt quote from Marco, Tony decided to make the purchase.

Moreover, the SK17’s stability has surprised Tony – unlike his previous machine, he doesn’t have to lower the blade every time he moves the arm.

Eye on the future

While Gingex is currently a one-man operation, Tony is gradually building up his workflow and hopes to bring someone else on board soon. Looking ahead, he has his eye on the newly released Kobelco SK26SR-7, an excavator that offers slightly larger dimensions while still fitting into tight spaces.

“It looks awesome compared to other machines in that class, still offering tight access, but great for work where I have a bit more room to move about and need that extra power and lift, whereas the SK17 can be used on the smaller spots,” said Tony.

Tony’s confident in the support he will receive for his new purchase from BrisVegas.

“The SK17 is still fairly new, so I haven’t encountered any problems yet. However, I bought a mini dumper from them a year ago, and they’ve been excellent with servicing it. I have no complaints.”

Then he began running around and pointing at things. We had to scurry to keep up with him.

“It’s got lights and emergency lights, it’s got headlights on the front as well as indicators. It’s almost ready to be road registered. It’ll only needs mirrors and reflectors,” he chortled before charging off again.

“All five deck-motor controllers are underneath the seat,” he said, pivoting the object in question. “Simply lift it up and everything’s in there.”

Keeping operators cool The Cat® 301.8 mini excavator is the first model in the range to have a sealed cab with air-conditioning, a valuable asset in the harsh Australian climate.

aul Cross of PGC Irrigation Contractors was dealing with a blistering hot summer’s day in Perth earlier this year, installing pipes for a large, sun-baked primary-school project.

All he needed for the dig was the latest Cat 301.8 mini excavator, and even though the forecast was for 40 degrees, he was unfazed.

Paul knew he would be working inside a sealed-and-pressurised cab equipped with air conditioning, chilling out while getting his work done, fast.

Year-round winner.

The feature is an industry-first for mini excavators of this size, making extended operation in high temperatures manageable.

“The air con is great,” said Paul. “When using it I don’t notice any draw on power or feel any impact on performance of the excavator at all.”

“It’s also roomy and I don’t feel claustrophobic inside. In some other machines, even with open cabs, I feel squashed up and uncomfortable.”

Paul said one of the reasons for the effectiveness of the AC unit was the machine’s use of advanced electric-overhydraulic (EH) controls instead of traditional pilot hydraulic systems, enhancing precision, efficiency, and operator comfort.

Traditional hydraulic pilot control systems generate heat due to constant hydraulic fluid movement, which in turn increases ambient temperature inside the cab. With EH controls, there are fewer hydraulic lines and less fluid movement, reducing overall heat build-up in the cab, allowing the AC system to cool the space more efficiently.

“Pilot hydraulic controls also need continuous pressure, which puts a load on the engine. This extra load generates more heat and reduces available power for other systems,” Paul said.

Paul said he valued the AC unit just as well during the cold winter months.

“It’s great just sitting there toasty warm with the heater on, and safe from the wind and rain,” he said.

Meanwhile, the cruise control helps operators maintain a constant speed as they travel across jobsites, saving on fuel.

“I make sure those functions are engaged all the time. Fuel consumption is well down, maybe by up to 40 per cent,” Paul said.

It doesn’t end with engine performance, though. Paul loved the machine’s blade float function, which allows the dozer blade to follow the ground contour without operator input, making it easier to achieve a smooth, level finish.

When engaged, the hydraulic pressure is released, letting the blade rest on the surface naturally.

“It’s fantastic for cleaning up and filling trenches and reducing the number of controls needed, saving time and reducing fatigue,” he said.

LiuGong facility creates electric feeling DownUnder A recent visit to LiuGong’s Global Research and Development Centre in southern China by the company’s Australian distributor has further reinforced the manufacturer’s market lead for the introduction of a wide range of electrically powered equipment DownUnder.

iuGong was one of the first equipment manufacturers to identify the potential of battery electric vehicle (BEV) technology and has since launched more than 90 products, offering solutions for almost every application and segment, including mining machinery, industrial and port equipment, agricultural machinery and various other products.

“The sheer scale of the facilities is highly impressive, and the level of automation and speed in which equipment is manufactured due to the automated assembly lines feeding from the sides, above and below is world class,” said Digby Moullin, General Manager with McIntosh Distribution.

He said the technical processes and systems operating at the facility were also amazing.

“LiuGong’s research and development work is quite incredible. They run every test imaginable, from acoustics through to dirt, dust and water ingress, plus stress testing of steel items, thermally stressing components and assessing electrical circuit durability.”

LiuGong’s first electric wheel loader in 2018 delivered energy savings of around 20% thanks to the optimised electric drive, hydraulic and transmission systems, while variable hydraulic and energy recovery systems added a further 15%-20% energy boost.

“The operational cost savings are significant. Based on a 20-tonne operatingweight loader being used for 2000 hours per annum, the savings are upward of $50,000 each year” Digby said.

Bobcat and All Class Training All Class Training is an RTO and preferred supplier of industry training and assessment services for EWP, forklift and other heavy machinery in Newcastle and throughout NSW. The company’s purpose-built training facility on the NSW central coast isn’t far from the Clark Equipment depot – the home of Bobcat equipment.

t probably won’t surprise anyone that All Class Training is using Bobcat gear – being a local, family owned and operated business and having the Bobcat dealership so close by.

But the company has quite a big range of machinery to cover its broad spectrum of training, and the recent purchase of the Bobcat UV34 utility vehicle only came about after experience with some other, similar machines.

CEO at All Class Training, Anthony Mearrick, is about as cheerful a bloke as anyone could hope to chat to on a busy working day. Despite the pressures of running a training facility going flat out, he was happy to spend a little time with

Landscape Contractor, starting with us asking why he went to Clark Equipment.

“Aaron’s the first contact in my phone,” he exploded in laughter. “I’ve just got him saved in my phone as ‘Az: Clark Equipment’, so it’s the first name I see. I saw an ad for the UV34, and thought, ‘I need one of those!’, so I just texted Az and said, ‘Mate. I want one’.”

The ensuing chuckling took a few seconds to pass, after which we could establish ‘Az’ as Aaron Becroft, sales representative at Clark Equipment, and Anthony’s go-to man.

Fit for purpose

As it turned out, All Class Training has several buggy-type vehicles in service.

“The utility vehicle is out at a rural property we own and use for training for some elements of the business – mainly earthmoving gear, skid steers and excavators,” Anthony explained, serious for a moment. “It’s part of an operational farm, and when we’re training students they do actual functional tasks that most people would do on a farm or a construction site. The UV34 is used to aid the instructors and the students in moving around the different areas where we’re conducting different training activities.

“Instead of a trainer having to walk 500 metres from one student to the other if they need closer attention,” smiled Anthony, “and rather than a two-way radio call, the trainer

can jump in and drive from one to the other.

It’s a major time saver and it’s safe.”

Being diesel-powered, the All Class staff find the UV34 nice and torquey, and an ideal platform for moving people and the gear associated with training with from place to place.

“The other buggies we have are more racespec vehicles,” outlined Anthony. “The UV34 is the first diesel buggy we’ve had, and for general operations it’s more fit for purpose for a whole range of tasks, and it means we can move people around safely, ergonomically and easily.”

When you’re on a good thing

We tried again: why Bobcat?

“There are very similar vehicles in the market, but for me it’s about the Bobcat brand,” said Anthony. “We have other Bobcat equipment – an excavator which we use for training, and a tractor/loader which we also use for training and property maintenance – and having similar branded gear where you already know what it’s like and how it performs, that’s a great recommendation.

“And if there is a problem and I call for help, I know from experience I’ll get a response.

That’s probably the biggest reason for sticking with the Bobcat brand.”

It was clear that, for all his good nature and enjoyment of a joke, Athony was serious in his regard for both the UV34 and his Bobcat gear in general.

“The service from Clark Equipment has been good,” he said with obvious sincerity.

“With Aaron, and with Clark Equipment here in Tomago in general, it’s been fantastic.”

Case study Baden Fallon of Designer Image has been running Hitachi excavators for eight years.

Hitachi and Designer Image A company which sticks with Hitachi, and which is still very much ‘in the pink’.

name with the very faintest of bells ringing somewhere in the dim recesses of our collective noggins.

Then suddenly the memory became crystal clear: Designer Image, and its owner, Baden Fallon, had shown us a bright-pink Hitachi ZX17U back in the September/October 2023 issue.

Baden had been raising awareness of breast cancer, something which had closely affected a staff member.

We were happy that situation had a good outcome, and we were keen to catch up and hear how things were going with Baden and Designer Image.

Brisbane-based Baden is a remarkably calm sort of bloke, considering the size of his company and the number of machines he has to care for.

“We have 15 excavators,” he told Landscape Contractor, sounding as though he wished he had more. “They’re all Hitachi.”

The voice of experience

We were a little staggered at the size of the number and wondered how long Designer Image had been using Hitachi.

“I’ve had Hitachis for about eight years now,” he recalled. “We run machines from 1.7 tonne through to eight tonne.”

Obviously Baden and Designer Image are happy with Hitachi machinery, and we wondered if that was due to any specific feature or facet of the excavators.

“It’s the reliability,” said Baden without hesitation. “We don’t want things breaking down, and we know we can totally count on the brand service from Hitachi.

“That’s the big one.”

Recap

For those who may not remember, Designer Image is a south-east Queensland residential landscape construction outfit. The company’s specialty is structural landscaping, complemented with soft landscaping services.

Designer Image has been successfully completing residential projects in both newbuild areas and existing suburbs since 2002, and offers services which include all aspects of earthworks, retaining walls, fencing, decks, pool restorations and installation of other external features.

The personnel touch

Baden went on to outline how important it was to have a good relationship with a supplier, and how his contact, Julian Korherr from Hitachi in Brisbane’s north, was a great example.

“We get really good service with Hitachi,” explained Baden. “But there’s lots of different things that are good.

“The brand itself is obviously a big part of it. Hitachi owns Hitachi. We get to deal directly with the manufacturer when we’re buying something. When we’re looking at

a machine through another company in Brisbane they’re generally a dealer.

When we buy a Hitachi we’re buying directly from Hitachi.”

The reliability of the machinery was, of course, a big factor, and Designer Image was particularly happy with its 15 excavators.

“The equipment’s very good,” said Baden thoughtfully. “No problem at all.

“If ever anything does go wrong, Julian and Hitachi come to our rescue very quickly.”

All the way

Baden’s high opinion of both his Hitachi machinery and the company itself was obvious, and it was equally clear it was an opinion built on a great deal of experience and exceptional service.

When a sizable company is prepared to put its faith in a specific manufacturer, and make the kind of investment needed to own and run a fleet of 15 excavators, that’s a very strong recommendation indeed.

usted, unreliable machinery and equipment costs you money. It costs you money because it makes you inefficient and slows down workflow. It’s imperative we keep machinery and equipment in tip-top shape so it’s there when we need it.

Unsurprisingly, the key to reliable equipment is planning.

All machinery and equipment, from a large excavator down to a cordless power drill, needs maintenance. Not only will wellmaintained equipment be more reliable, but it will also extend its lifespan, saving money on both fronts.

Database

You can carry out either reactive maintenance or preventative maintenance.

Of course, you will never completely eliminate machinery and equipment failures,

Unreliable equipment costs money. It costs because it slows down workflow.

Image: New Africa/stock.adobe.com but preventive maintenance will go a long way to reducing them. So, if you are always getting caught out by downed equipment and/or you want to extend the life of your equipment, spend some time now setting up a maintenance plan to save money in the future.

The first thing you need to do is to identify what machinery and equipment you require to keep your business running. These are the tools, equipment and machinery with the potential to bring your business to a grinding halt. It’s important to develop a plan for when that equipment is offline. A great example is the boss’s PC. What happens when it fails?

Where is the backup? How will they keep the business running while it’s being fixed?

Set up a database and log everything that requires maintenance. This includes office equipment alongside your site equipment and machinery. Create an individual maintenance plan for each item and schedule the manufacturer-recommended maintenance.

Be sure to include the user manual so it’s easily accessible.

Now you are in a better position. You can plan work around maintenance requirements (for example, service the boss’s computer when they’re on holidays, or service the excavator when you are able to hire one).

The maintenance database can also show

you predicted maintenance costs for the quarter and year, so you can build those into your overheads more accurately.

Stay one step ahead

Regular preventative maintenance includes: • Regular inspections – before a piece of equipment is used, it should be thoroughly inspected for wear and tear. And, at the end of the job, the equipment should also be inspected for damage. Staff should be encouraged to flag concerns and book the equipment in for maintenance if damage is found. Create a pre-start and post-inspection form for each piece of equipment for staff to fill out. This will only take a short time to fill out, but will reduce breakage and increase safety.

• Replace worn parts – when an inspection identifies worn parts, it’s important to replace them as quickly as possible. Not only will it increase the longevity of the item, but it will prevent it from becoming a safety concern.

• Cleaning and lubrication – use down time to regularly clean and lubricate equipment as required. A deep clean is also the best way to really inspect something, allowing the person time to look over it thoroughly.

While it’s cost effective to clean equipment during down time, make sure it doesn’t go

too long between cleans. One way is to schedule a cleaning afternoon back at the office once a month. Have a BBQ, clean the gear and everyone gets to catch up.

• Keep records of all inspections, cleaning and minor maintenance alongside the scheduled maintenance. Do this to encourage a culture of looking after equipment. It should highlight if and when a machine isn’t getting the TLC it requires.

Train and maintain

Regular maintenance isn’t the only preventative measure you can take to keep your gear in good condition.

Training is a really important aspect of good machinery and equipment health.

When staff know how to use the tools in the right way they will last much longer. Training will ensure they use the right tools for the job, preventing them from burning the motor out or snapping blades.

Make sure the user manuals for each piece of equipment and machinery are readily available for all users. Even an experienced user may need access to the manual to check they are using or cleaning it correctly.

Identify the equipment you can’t live without and put a plan in place for when the inevitable happens. Create and stick to a maintenance plan for all your tools, equipment and machinery. This will allow you to schedule maintenance for when it’s convenient for you, not when the thing blows up. And train your staff in how to use everything correctly.

All of the above will not only improve efficiency, but it will be much safer for the users.

Master Landscapers of South Australia (MLSA) CEO Chris Wiltshire has some tips for setting up with an apprentice, and shares a big SA achievement

F

rom November last year, the landscape profession was formally recognised as a trade.

As a result, serving an apprenticeship is now a pathway for young people to enter the industry. Many landscaping businesses have raised questions with me on how they can apply to obtain the services of an apprentice. To become eligible as an employer, the following steps should be administered…

Government to help employers. Once a written agreement is signed, an ACAP can submit a copy of the training contract to Skills SA within 28 days.

ACAPs can also perform the following functions: • Find trainees and apprentices • Check eligibility for financial incentives • Choose a training provider for the off-thejob training, and • Sign the training contract.

Step 1: register as an employer

Step 4: understanding your obligations

The first place to start is on the Skills SA website, specifically the page regarding registration: skilledworkers.business.sa.gov. au/register-to-employ-an-apprentice.

Through this page find a link to the ATLAS Portal and request a username and password. Be aware this can take up to two business days.

Step 2: complete the application

Once the potential employer receives their login details, they can complete their employer registration application at atlas.skills.sa.gov.au.

The ATLAS Portal will provide access to: • Register a business • Renew a business registration • Update details • View trainee and apprentice training contract details, and • Request changes to a training contract.

As part of the information provided to Skills SA, the employer should disclose their relevant building-licence number if the apprentice is to be trained in a field covered by licencing requirements. If the employer does not have the relevant licence(s) where required, it will be difficult for them to obtain the services of an apprentice.

Step 3: hiring an apprentice

When hiring an apprentice, the employer is required to enter into a formal written agreement with the worker. To assist with documentation, Apprentice Connect Australia Providers (ACAPs) are contracted by the Australian Commonwealth

The employer of an apprentice is required to: • Provide employment and training for the term of the contract • Always provide the apprentice with appropriate supervision • Release the apprentice and pay them while they undertake relevant training and assessment • Comply with relevant South Australian Skills Standards • Comply with the wages and conditions in the relevant industrial award or agreement, and • Comply with other relevant legislation such as the Work Health and Safety Act 2012.

South Australian Win

A team of South Australians made the journey to Victoria entering a garden into the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. This was no easy task, with a lot of hours dedicated to creating the display.

Despite the hurdles involved with travel, the team (known as Əskāp) pulled off a remarkable win, recognised as Best in Show.

Well done to everyone involved in making the display possible, with a big congratulations to Distinctive Gardens, Desert Flower Landscaping, SA Grown (Heyne’s Wholesale Nursery) and Yergan Landscapes. It’s an amazing result and great recognition of the wonderful work we do in SA.
