T

he adoption of specialisation within landscaping is an interesting dynamic.

People are coming into the industry and electing to concentrate on a single facet or discipline, possibly construction, or even a specific area of construction. Categories like horticulture and design take a back seat for these folks, and the reactions I see to that circumstance are interesting. The older campaigners grimace and shake their heads, while the young specialists point out they don’t need to know one plant from another to build a retaining wall or maintain a machine. They say there are horticulturalists on the jobsite who’ll look after the plants, or drainage specialists who’ll point to where they need excavation or irrigation.

Older campaigners believe a solid grounding in all aspects of an endeavour makes for a versatile and competent professional, and being a senior in my own field myself, I can relate to that. I remember being out with my son shooting some images. I was looking at the light and eyeing in the exposure value, selecting the ISO setting on the camera, and expecting

to see a shutter speed of around 1/250th of a second with an aperture of F8. I focused on the spot I expected to shoot and panned my camera through with the moving machine to drop the shutter at what I was pretty sure was the right moment.

My son put his camera on full auto, held the shutter button down, and waved the camera in the general direction of the machine as it went past.

I looked at him horrified and asked, “How many shots did you just burn off?”

He reported the camera would do six frames per second, so probably 10 or 12. Then he in turn asked, “What’s it matter how many frames I shot, as long as I have the one I need?”

It’s hard to argue with that kind of logic, just as it’s hard to argue with those who are specialising in a specific area of landscaping.

They’ll put forward the view that there are other specialists worrying about and dealing with those areas of the work, so they shouldn’t waste time with them.

What puts sand in the gears of the senior members of the profession is the

specialists want to be included as ‘landscapers’.

Will the industry in coming years be a collection of specialists unable to operate outside their chosen field?

Will the result be those looking for landscaping services going to project managers and having little contact with the people who are hands-on with the work?

Would that be a good thing?

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

I expect there’ll be plenty of people within the landscaping industry in Australia who’ll have strong opinions one way or the other, and watching which way things will go will make for interesting spectating.

The benefits of synthetic grass putting greens Marc Worner suggests tapping into a recreational favourite as an additional service and income stream.

C

ompetition in the landscape industry has never been more intense. Many clients only look at the cost of the job and not the type of materials used and the quality of the work. A successful business finds its point of difference with the competition and pushes that angle at every opportunity.

Australians love spacious lawn areas.

Some grow food. Many have playgrounds, designer gardens, swimming pools, or cabanas to enrich their relaxation time.

Our backyards can easily incorporate a professional-standard putting green because some synthetic grasses mimic real grass. Did you know some synthetic grass is designed especially for golf greens and gives the same ball movement across its surface as the real thing?

If your clients want to improve their short game or just have heaps of family fun, a

synthetic grass putting green is the answer.

In fact, it’s ideal for any situation requiring an all-weather surface that looks, feels and plays like natural turf, but without the associated levels of wear, maintenance and need for water.

Multiple benefits

A facility of this type could incorporate and complement current or planned swimming pools, spas, tennis courts, or landscaping features in multi-dwelling sites such as apartment complexes, retirement villages, resorts, and caravan parks.

Many businesses could also benefit. At corporate headquarters, a putting green or mini golf course is the ideal way to mix business with pleasure when meeting with clients, provide social activity for staff, and act as an interesting focal point for the premises,

which is sure to impress visitors. Hopefully they ask who designed and built it.

Parameters

Synthetic golf grass is specifically manufactured for putting greens, driving ranges, tees, fairways, and mini golf. So, when designing this type of landscape project, consider the size and shape of the putting surface, the slope of the land and how it might affect the layout of the green, specific undulations and tiers that will need to be built into the putting surface, how large the fringe area should be, whether there’s room for chipping areas, and sand bunker viability.

Finally, there’s scope for add-on value in suggesting landscaping ideas that could help finish off the area.

Factors to consider are what the green is to be used for (just putting and/or chipping),

size of the area available, access, budget, how many people will be using it at one time, how many holes are wanted, and so on.

In other words, ‘How long is a piece of string?’ Every client’s needs will be different.

Layout plays a part in the cost and enjoyment factor. Costs will differ depending on whether it’s an oddly shaped area or has round or curved borders. The larger or more intricate the area, the more material you will need.

As with any product, as the price increases, so does the quality and durability of synthetic grass. Having said that, there are some projects where these factors are less important.

TIP: Adding some fringe to the putting green is a great way to increase the size. For the standard green, a high-quality, 20mmpile synthetic grass with double backing

for extra strength, and with non-directional construction (like real grass), will allow the ball to run smoothly. Some people choose a dense nylon grass instead of polypropylene grass because it needs less infill. For details, talk to a manufacturer like EnduroTurf. Pile depth depends on the use. For instance, if you wanted a verge or fringe for the green you would use a 30-40mm pile. A verge gives an excellent area to practice chip shots.

If you’re given the budget to build a green that’s over 300 square metres, you can add more slope and contour. The larger the golf green, the more room you have to play with.

Don’t overdo it. If you’re going to err, do so by making the green less severe.

TIP: If you construct a chipping green, use synthetic grasses with a base formula that absorbs the impact of golf shots and allows the ball to check up and roll naturally. Most

importantly, putting greens should have no more than a two-degree slope. It will look almost dead flat, at least from the edge, but there’ll be plenty of variation and enough interest to make putting fun and realistic. This is the point – the putting green design must be realistic.

TIP: If it’s too fast or has too much break, people won’t use it.

The build

Now to the construction of a synthetic grass putting green: • Start by preparing the area as you would for laying pavers. You need to get the levels right from the outset, so base preparation is important. If installing a green on a natural slope, level two sections (at each end) and then step down the slope with a small tier in the middle. The tier should www.landscapecontractor.com.au

and make joins. You can use any kiln-dried sand – a fine, natural, washed and dried sand designed to be used for jointing block paving and narrow paving slab joints. Builders bagged dried sand will also work.

Costs be subtle, only dropping approximately 100mm. You may need to remove a fair bit of earth to make this happen, so first make sure your levels are going to work.

TIP: Try to choose a green width that matches the supplier’s grass roll width. You want to limit the amount of cutting. Also, tell your client it will be a less-expensive project.

• Next, install and compact porous road base to a thickness of approximately 150mm.

• Then lay around 50 mm of crusher dust, contour it into the required shape of the finished green, and compact. Remember, no more than two degrees of slope.

• A rubber layer (like in playgrounds) of approximately 10mm is then spread over the road base to give it a softer feel underfoot.

Your chosen synthetic grass is then laid. At that time, you may choose to use joining tape to hold the green parts together – like fringe grass to the green. Otherwise you’ll have a join in your design. This tape is expensive, but it reduces the stress and hassle of creating joins.

Last, the final surface of the putting green is built up by meticulously brushing in whitewashed, kiln-dried sand to within approximately 5mm of the top of the grass strands. An infill is required to weigh the green down and give it its ball 8

speed. Interestingly, one retailer suggests whitewashed sand is inferior; however its secret infill doesn’t become compacted and is water resistant.

TIP: The higher the infill, the faster the green speed. The green’s speed – or ‘stimp rating’ – is important to know beforehand so players know how hard to hit the ball over different distances. Stimp is the measure of how far a ball will roll when gravity pulls it down a ramp angled at about 20 degrees. A stimpmeter measures each green’s speed (slow, average, or fast) and the results are published at the better golf clubs for the benefit of their members.

DID YOU KNOW? The famous Augusta National Golf Club in the USA refuses to allow its greens to be rated, even by its own staff.

Variations

Cheaper constructions are possible using different construction methods and materials.

For the base, you can use just crusher dust or river sand. Likewise, if you use less infill the green will not last as long, which is not necessarily a negative, and it will feel harder underfoot, which may or may not matter, depending on the users. However, a softer putting surface eliminates ball skip when putting.

Routine maintenance is normally confined to occasional brushing and rolling, depending on use.

Synthetic golf grasses with a pile of between 40-50mm cost around $40 per square metre retail. Synthetic golf grasses with a pile of around 20mm retail for around $50 per square metre. Be aware prices vary widely depending on type, roll width, country of manufacture and delivery costs.

Typically, landscapers quote from around $25,000 including accessories for about a 25 square metre synthetic grass putting green, and this largely depends on site conditions and client demands. Large greens, which mimic famous golf course holes with bunkers, dry creeks, and water hazards can easily exceed $80,000.

Flagging a point of difference

What’s a putting green without a hole and flag, I hear you ask ?

Golf cups can be purchased in plastic, stainless steel or aluminium. Golf flags range from one metre to two metres in height. Flag sticks and flags come in different colours, checked or plain. For less able people, there is a flag picker, which saves one bending down to retrieve the ball.

So, because putting greens are becoming increasingly popular, stay ahead of your competition, work out your business point of difference, and start promoting this landscape project.

The kindest cut

John Gabriele recommends careful thought before shaping native plants.

ustralian native plants have come a long way over the past few decades and now hold a prominent place in Australian gardens and landscapes.

Natives have a reputation for being lowmaintenance, but like any plant in a designed garden or landscape, with a little attention they can become so much more.

Pruning

Pruning plays an important role in the successful cultivation of native plants if they are to display at their best.

The pruning of any tree or shrub should be undertaken with a goal in mind. For many native shrubs, the aim is to increase the number and quality of flowers, as well as foliage density and improved plant vigour. Apart from improving overall plant appearance, correct pruning will eliminate several potential problems that can result in susceptibility to pest and disease infection, compromising habit and aesthetic appeal, or structural weakness in the case of advanced trees.

Managing trees in industrial and urban landscapes requires attention to detail and in conformity with the Australian Standard AS4373 Pruning of Amenity Trees. The recommendations given in the Standard are intended to apply specifically to urban and amenity trees. The objective of AS4373 is to provide contractors with a guide defining uniform tree pruning procedures and practices to minimise the adverse or negative impact of pruning on trees. Too often poor examples – particularly of tree pruning – are seen in landscapes where contractmaintenance crews have had little or no training in correct pruning techniques.

Understand the plant

An understanding of the plant is paramount in making decisions about when and how to prune. Features such as flowering time, age of flowering wood, seasonal growth, vigour, and plant habit need to be considered before making that first cut.

We can look to nature and find examples of ‘natural pruning’ in storm damage, wind

pruning on exposed sites, and defoliation caused by the feeding habits of herbivores and insects. But to purposefully remove branches from plants in cultivation is an unnatural act. For this reason, care needs to be exercised in pruning to ensure plant health is not adversely affected. Improper cuts can lead to unsightly shapes, and imbalances result in asymmetrical growth, overly dense or sparse areas, and an overall unattractive appearance.

Additionally, irregular or poorly planned cuts can lead to the development of stubs or uneven branching, which detracts from the plant’s natural beauty and symmetry.

The type of pruning undertaken will ultimately be determined by the type of plant being cultivated. Many of the native shrubs grown in utility and urban landscapes flower on current season’s growth, and plants of this nature are best pruned immediately after their main flower flush. These include Callistemons, Phylotheca, Prostanthera and Hybrid Grevilleas. Pruning up to one third of the season’s growth at this stage encourages

rejuvenation of dense, compact growth. Tip pruning is also recommended as part of a regular maintenance routine.

In the case of remedial pruning of larger trees, which involves the removal of large limbs that may be diseased or structurally unsound, target pruning should be employed.

Target pruning involves removing only those branches identified as existing or potential problems. Pruning cuts should be made using a systematic approach to minimise damage to the tree. It takes time to prune with skill and is not a task to be rushed.

Either you’ll make cuts that take years to undo, or you won’t make the cuts needed to fix a systemic issue in time.

The step cut and undercut method of pruning will ensure minimum damage occurs to the branch framework and prevent bark splitting (refer to AS4373 for detail). When removing branches, flush cutting to the point of origin between the branch and trunk should be avoided at all costs as this can lead to rapid internal decay of branches. When branches are pruned to the collar, a callus of repairing cells forms around the injury, sealing it from further infection. to infection from pests and diseases. Stubs are also unacceptable. They not only look unsightly but may also result in epicormic shoots. Branches should always be pruned to the branch collar, which will vary in size and shape depending on species.

Epicormic shoots often appear as clusters of small branches emerging directly from the trunk or large branches. Epicormic shoots can be beneficial; however, they can create structural weakness and require proper management. That’s why pruning should be undertaken carefully to avoid creating wounds that could trigger epicormic growth.

Managing strap-leaved plants

If a dome shape is required in a landscape, plants like Westringia that are more responsive to pruning techniques to maintain such a shape should be used.

Pruning isn’t restricted to trees and shrubs.

In a recent social-media forum with landscape-maintenance managers, criticism was levelled at the pruning techniques used on strap-leaved plants, particularly Lomandra spp. and cultivar varieties in high-visibility landscapes. We’ve all seen these or other strap-leaved, grass-like plants being pruned into a formal spherical shape, or the pruning

Not only are such practices detrimental to overall plant health, but the aesthetic value of these plants is also compromised. The questions then need to be asked: why is this type of pruning becoming increasingly common in the landscape-maintenance industry, and what drives it?

A common response is to manage plant height to provide line of sight. This is a particularly widespread practice for car-park settings. That then opens further discussion on correct plant selection in the first instance. If the selected species is unsuitable in terms of mature height, make a better selection. There are plenty of lowgrowing native and exotic species with similar habits to Lomandra. Examples include Poa, Festuca, Liriope, and some Dianellas that will grow under 50cm at maturity. Many utility landscape designs rely on tried and tested tough plants that work well under harsh conditions.

Many of the management problems

relating to the ongoing maintenance of selected plant species arise because the species aren’t given appropriate consideration at the design phase.

In most cases, the maintenance required for strap-leaved plants involves hand removal of dead material from within the centre of the plant. Pruning of Lomandra and other strap-leaved plants can, however, be justified, particularly when plants become congested or vigour declines. At that stage a hard prune will rejuvenate clumps.

Hard pruning is best undertaken in late winter or very early spring prior to the main growth flush.

Dome pruning

In the case of ‘dome pruning’ Lomandra, there are several factors that would justify a different plant selection.

This type of pruning reduces the photosynthetic area of the foliage, blocks new growth, and impedes airflow that will ultimately lead to a decline in plant vigour.

The regrowth often has jagged edges from

pruning cuts with mechanical shears, and if pruned after the main growth flush in spring, plants will be compromised moving into the heat of the late spring and summer months ahead.

Dome pruning of strap-leaved plants in general leads to an unrealistic shape that can often be at odds with the overall design aesthetic. If a dome shape is required in a landscape, plants that are more responsive to pruning techniques to maintain such a shape should be installed in the first instance.

Some examples include Buxus, Westringia, Pittosporum, and other hedging/topiary plants. These make better selections where specialist amenity pruning is required. It makes no sense to prune strap-leaved plants into domes if the design intent was to have formal geometric symmetry in the first instance. Strap-leaved plants provide a flowing design aesthetic. Their natural habit should be celebrated, not restricted to a controlled shape at odds with their natural beauty.

Important skill

The bottom line is that whatever type of pruning is being conducted by landscapemaintenance crews, operators should have a thorough understanding of plant physiology, when and how to prune depending on specific species requirements, and be able to make recommendations on better species selection when necessary.

If your crews are not trained in specialist amenity pruning, it might be time to consider upskilling. We need to ensure pruning practices maintain the delicate balance between function and form of plants within a landscape to avoid compromising the aesthetic integrity of the design and the overall health of installed plants. www.landscapecontractor.com.au

ho uses Indian Hawthorn?

The numerous cultivars are lowmaintenance evergreens with glossy foliage and showy spring flowers. They tolerate heat, frost, drought (once established) and coastal conditions. Their bulletproof suitability for most garden styles and applications has put them in most specifiers’ plant list – up until now, that is.

Entomosporium – or Photinia – Leaf Spot is among the most common and destructive diseases affecting Raphiolepis. The disease becomes apparent in winter or spring when small red spots appear on the leaves and quickly multiply. If left unchecked, the disease can cause the shrub to lose most of its foliage. The continual loss of foliage gradually weakens the plant and its appearance.

Although it rarely kills the plant, once it takes hold in the garden, it’s pretty much there to stay.

Survivor

The fungal pathogen thrives in cool, moist and humid conditions. It’s encouraged by periods of frequent rain or overhead watering, and the cooler wet weather in autumn really gives it a run on. It mainly attacks plants in the rose family, and Raphiolepis is one of its most susceptible hosts. Other plants affected include Photinia and Pear cultivars.

The fungus survives through winter on infected leaves and fallen debris. When conditions are wet, spores are released and splash onto new leaves. Young foliage is especially vulnerable, which is why infections are often worse in spring as plant’s new leaves emerge.

Signs

What to look for: • Tiny circular red or purplish spots on young leaves;

• spots, usually 1–2 mm across, which get larger and develop a grey or tan centre; • in heavy infections, the spots may merge, forming larger irregular patches; • older leaves turning orange or reddish before dropping; • significant leaf drop occurring during winter and spring; • plants appearing thin and bare, with leaves mainly at the branch tips; and • shrubs losing their compact, dense appearance.

Although the disease seldom kills the plant outright, repeated loss of foliage weakens it. Poor health makes the shrub more vulnerable to heat stress, cold damage, pests, and other diseases. Given Raphiolepis has become a core member of popular plants in the landscape asset, if this disease is left unchecked, we’ll all be in strife.

What encourages Entomosporium?

Understanding what the fungus likes helps to reduce risk. Entomosporium spot thrives when: • Leaves stay wet for long periods (heavy dew, rain, overhead irrigation); • humidity is high; • temperatures are cool to mild; • new growth is present; and • plants are crowded with poor air movement.

This is why coastal and cooler regions often see more severe outbreaks, while dry inland areas may see fewer problems.

Management

Naturally prevention is better than a cure.

The most effective way to manage the spot is through effective cultural practices. Here are some helpful strategies: • Use resistant cultivars. Some newer Raphiolepis varieties have been bred for better disease resistance (and some haven’t). Unfortunately, we have yet to 16

Frustratingly, the lists from overseas generally don’t include our cultivars. Replacing highly susceptible plants can be easier than constant treatment. I’ve found Oriental Pearl, Cosmic Pink, Hot Tips, and X Intermedia are prone, whereas Apple Blossom, Snow Maiden, Cosmic White and Umbellata species are more resilient.

• Improve air flow. The pathogen loves still, damp air. Although it’s often easier said than done, try to space plants apart, prune interior branches to open the shrub, and avoid planting in shady or crowded beds.

• Reduce leaf wetness. Avoid overhead

sprinklers. Water at soil level or use drip irrigation and water early in the morning so leaves dry quickly.

• Ensure garden hygiene. Remove and dispose of fallen leaves and infected pruning material. Don’t compost this debris, as spores survive and spread from infected litter, and it’s best to rake the infected leaves as blowing out beds will naturally spread the spores.

• Store the diseased material in a bulk bag.

What do you think will happen with the uncontained spores when you drive down the road? If you have leaf spot in one of your gardens be prepared to have it in others. It’s contagious.

Fertilise lightly in early spring with higher levels of potassium and calcium to toughen the foliage and avoid fertiliser with excessive nitrogen that encourages faster and weaker growth.

Once the spot has taken hold you’ll need to implement an annual chemical regime to effectively manage its recurrence. If you’ve got it this year, then, without adequate prevention, you’ll have it next year.

Fungicides can only help protect the new growth. They don’t cure leaves already infected. Sprays work best as part of an integrated management plan that includes sanitation and improved cultural conditions.

Beyond lifting your cultural-practices game and using chemicals, you will definitely need a calendar to remind you to get on the front foot next autumn. Fungicides work best as preventatives. Spraying once the spots are present will, at best, only help to keep it at bay. If you’re onsite fortnightly or monthly without a preventative regime, you and the plants are in trouble.

instructs and to wear appropriate PPE. All of these chemicals are systemic, which means if the healthy foliage is thoroughly covered while the plant is actively growing, the chemical will be absorbed and provide a few weeks of protection. Continued use of the same product will likely result in the pathogen becoming resistant to that specific chemical.

Remember our last issue when I touched on modes of action? This is important with fungicides. Fungus can develop resistance quickly. It’s best to apply the same product twice then change to a product that’s listed in another group (aka ‘mode of action’).

There’s nothing effective that’s sold at Bunnings.

Some colleagues have found regular

spraying of a phosphite such as Agrifos or Yates Anti Rot helps a plant’s resistance.

Although phosphites aren’t labelled for effective control, they certainly can’t hurt.

For best results: • Read and thoroughly obey the instructions; • begin spraying in late autumn before the spots begin to show in winter; • spray at intervals listed in the instructions; and • stop in late spring when the weather warms and new growth has hardened.

If fungicides alone are relied upon while watering practices remain the same and fallen leaves are allowed to accumulate beneath, results will be disappointing. Sprays help most when combined with cultural changes.

Pruning and removal decisions

For light to moderate infections, prune to improve air flow, then implement watering and sanitation changes, and spray the developing foliage as soon as possible.

For severe infections with repeated defoliation, pruning helps, but may not solve the problem if the plant is genetically susceptible.

For chronic problems year after year, cut your losses and replace the shrub with a more resistant variety or an entirely different species. This often provides the most longterm success.

So, sadly, Nature has found a chink in the armour of this once bulletproof shrub.

Following my instructions listed here should see things improve, but be ready for Entomosporium again next year.

Chemicals

Effective chemicals at preventing the spot include: • Tombstone Duo (Trifloxystrobin and Tebuconazole), labelled ‘Caution’; • Systhane (Myclobutanil), labelled ‘Caution’; and • Procon 250EC (Propiconazole), labelled ‘Poison’.

From labourer to the boardroom

Western Australia’s LD Total has just ticked over 25 years in the Australian landscaping industry. General Manager Paul Fiore today oversees a company enjoying stellar growth.

rom commercial projects to home gardens, LD Total strives to listen and connect with clients’ visions, develop longlasting partnerships, and create inspirational outdoor spaces.

The business was purchased in November 2000 and, at the time, employed 38 staff and operated from a single depot in Anketell, just south of Perth. Today LD Total employs team members across bases in Perth, Bunbury, Melbourne, Adelaide, the Sunshine and Gold Coasts, and holds various building licences across all Australian states.

Having started as a labourer several decades ago, Paul Fiore is now General Manager, and was happy to chat with Landscape Contractor about the highlights and challenges the company and industry have seen over the years.

Give it a go

“I sort of fell into landscaping when my parents purchased LD Total 25 years ago,” recalled Fiore. “I thought, ‘Okay. I’ll give this 22

landscaping thing a go’.”

Paul started like any other newbie, working and learning on the job. That led to a year at TAFE studying horticulture, and then another year studying business management.

“I worked my way up,” said Fiore. “I went from labourer to team leader, supervisor, area manager, department manager, and then ultimately ended up running the whole show as General Manager.

“That’s it in a nutshell. That’s a brief history of my time in landscaping with LD Total.”

Best laid plans

Paul doesn’t spend a lot of time on the tools these days. He’s responsible for a large company, and that takes serious commitment. We asked about the journey from labourer to executive.

“My role has changed drastically over 25 years, along with the business,” he said.

“We’ve purchased another five businesses and gone through organic growth. We have 12 depots and offices in four states, and we

now have 580 staff. My days of swinging a shovel are long gone, but I appreciate the experience of those days. I don’t ask anyone to do something I wouldn’t do myself, or that I wouldn’t know how to do, and I know how long things should take.

“My days aren’t routine. Typically, I come to the office with the best-laid plans, but sometimes I get none of it done because something else pops up and needs to be dealt with. I work closely with our 12 department managers, and I support them however I can – staff management, tendering, looking at the profit-and-loss statements.”

Core business

Paul’s grasp of LD Total’s operations is understandably thorough.

“There are three core areas to our business,” he said. “Landscape construction, landscape maintenance, and front-yard lot packages. We focus on those across Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Queensland.

The company offers a spectrum of services from design through construction and on to maintenance. This installation at Port Coogee is an eye-catching example of LD Total’s work.

“We have a dozen landscape architects in Western Australia, and we try and offer clients the whole package, from design all the way through to maintenance, and it keeps us busy.”

Although the company offers a spectrum of services, playgrounds figure prominently in daily operations. We asked why LD Total had moved into that sphere of operation.

“It just happened,” said Fiore.

“We grew with the industry, and developers started to put more focus on parks to attract people to buy in their estates.

A big, beautiful, awesome playground helped them sell.

“The councils ended up with those assets.

The old grass areas and swing sets are now being upgraded to nature or sensory parks, or the councils are trying to match the developers’ offerings. As backyards get smaller and smaller, big, open spaces are needed for kids to get out and play.

“I think the biggest shift in the industry in my time has been the quality of playgrounds the industry is now producing. Some of the playgrounds our teams, and the industry in general, are offering are just phenomenal. I wish they were around when I was a kid – million-dollar play towers, water play parks, and nature playgrounds. They’re integrating all sorts of technology into play areas.”

“COVID was a challenge, but we were lucky, he said. “We in the construction industry were still able to work in a lot of instances. Others weren’t. It hurt us, but it didn’t really compare to the Global Financial Crisis (GFC).

“In the GFC we had to make redundancies to survive, and that, for me, was probably the toughest thing we’ve ever had to do – telling people they didn’t have a job through no fault of their own. That was difficult, but it was something we had to do to survive.”

Paul highlighted the landscaping industry’s proactive moves to tree retention as a development he’d been glad to see, but he felt one aspect of employment left room for improvement.

“The pay of apprentices,” he said.

“I really don’t agree with it as it is. We’re not plumbers or electricians. When we send out a team, say a crew of five, the apprentices are capable of doing much of the same work as the guy sitting in the ute next to them.

We have someone who’s committing to us for four years, going to TAFE to learn the theoretical side, and we penalise them up to $11 per hour.

“That just seems backwards thinking.

“LD Total doesn’t pay apprentice rates.

We pay what the person is worth. The rates of pay for apprentices in the landscape industry aren’t where they should be. I understand for plumbers and electricians, because a tradesman in those areas can do specialised work, but landscaping is different.

Apprentices can do a lot of the work others can do, so why are we penalising them?

Ups and downs

Over two-and-a-half decades Paul has seen lows along with the good times. There was one particularly tough time he recalls with sadness.

Keep on keeping on

Asked about the future for himself and LD Total, Fiore broke into a smile.

“Hopefully my son will take over from me,” he said, “and I guess we’re just going to continue on this journey.

“We have a good business established in WA and Victoria, and I’d like to continue our journey in Queensland and in SA. We’re still the new kids on the block in those states.

“Trying to continue our growth on the east coast is a big focus for us, and it’s a big challenge, and there’s no way we could do it if we didn’t have a strong foundation here in WA. My two brothers are involved and are as integral to the business as every other member of the team. One moved to Victoria and helped us get established over there.

The other moved to Queensland, and he’s getting us settled in The Sunshine State.

“We’re nothing without our people.

There’s no way we can be the size we are, and achieve the things we’re achieving, without our great, loyal staff. I want to continue that journey for their sake, as well as ours.

Let it happen

As for the long-term outlook? Paul stopped for a moment before answering.

“I haven’t really given that a lot of thought,” he said.

“I think the industry groups in each state, like LIAWA here in WA, who I’m fairly close to, are doing good work, and hopefully that will continue.

“I think the landscaping industry’s in reasonably good shape. If I was trying to pick a trade, there’s enough landscaping work around for everyone, and there are good opportunities for team members coming through.

“It’s an exciting industry to be involved with.”

Some landscapes have a way of stopping you in your tracks, not because they demand attention, but because they feel right. Landscaping Victoria’s 2025 Landscape of the Year is a great example.

OS Design’s Peninsula Project is calm, coastal and considered, blending architecture, materiality and atmosphere to create an outdoor environment that feels more like a retreat than a residential garden.

From the sweeping lines of the pool to the layered transitions between alfresco living, recreation, and reflection, every element has been crafted to support the client’s vision for a space that could restore, centre and inspire. It’s a project built on ambition and trust: a high-pressure brief, a tight deadline and a collective commitment to delivering something personal.

The result speaks softly but confidently – a landscape where precision meets emotion, and where the technical excellence behind the scenes fades seamlessly into the experience of being there.

It’s no surprise, then, that the Peninsula Project went on to earn Best Pool in the Landscape, Landscape Design over 250m², and Landscape of the Year at the 2025 Victorian Landscape Industry Awards.

The brief

The client approached COS Design after unsuccessful attempts with previous designers, searching for what he described as “…the missing piece of the puzzle.”

His expectations were exacting: he wanted a design that would blow him away on every level and integrate seamlessly with the home, the barn, and the coastal environment. Key elements included a pool as the hero feature, an alfresco area, sun decks, a fire pit, an outdoor bath and shower, and amenities for year-round use.

While the brief allowed for creativity, the design also required attention to detail, layered planning, sophisticated documentation, and seamless integration with the site’s natural and architectural context. Steve Taylor, Managing Director at COS Design, developed a concept early in the process and carried it through, from town-planning approvals to engineering, 3D design development, and complex construction coordination.

Scope of works

The scope incorporated a redesign of the property’s external spaces, uniting landscape architecture, pool design, structural elements, civil considerations, and lifestyle amenities into one cohesive vision. This included building permit documentation managed in-house, design detailing, and alignment with multiple trade disciplines, from pool specialists to structural builders to landscape contractors.

The pool was a design focus – not merely as a feature, but as the emotional and visual anchor of the outdoor experience. Every surrounding element was planned to support this focal point, ensuring movement, views, and materials worked together to deliver a space that felt both luxurious and connected to its coastal setting.

Site conditions, ongoing design additions, and the integration of new technologies required constant refinement. Delivering a personal, emotionally driven outdoor space, rather than a commercial development, called for sensitivity, precision, and adaptability.

Aligning expectations between client, designer, and contractors demanded exemplary communication and unity of purpose.

The pool was a design focus, not merely as a feature, but as the emotional and visual anchor of the outdoor experience.

Collaboration and construction excellence

While the design vision was strong, its success relied on execution. Coastal Builders, under the leadership of Peter Leyden, served as the overarching builder, coordinating a team through a demanding and weatheraffected construction program. TJ Pool Constructions and Hathaway Landscape delivered exceptional workmanship, ensuring every design detail, no matter how intricate, was realised to the highest standard.

Despite the time pressure and complexity,

the project unfolded as what COS Design later described as “…a masterclass in precision building, communication and teamwork”.

Every trade bought into the vision, and the collaborative culture established on site became one of the strengths of the project.

The result

The completed landscape is a refined, modern, coastal sanctuary – an outdoor environment that feels personal yet timeless. The spaces flow effortlessly between architecture, pool, planting zones, and lifestyle areas, achieving the ‘missing piece’ the client had long hoped for.

With the garden grown in, the property exudes calm, warmth, and a sense of belonging.

The client refers to it as their ‘forever happy place’, a testament to the project’s emotional impact.

For COS Design, the recognition from Landscaping Victoria, including Best Pool in the Landscape, Best Landscape Design over 250m², a silver medal for Softscaping in the Landscape, and ultimately Landscape of the Year, validates years of accumulated experience, innovation, and internal refinement. The project stands as the proudest achievement in the company’s 30-year journey.

A memorable project An award-winning entrance to the Australian War Memorial has brought a modern sensibility to a special space and won the landscaper the Commercial & Civil Construction Landscaper of the Year Award for the second year in a row.

O

ne of the most notable public institutions in the country, the Australian War Memorial, has continued to expand and modernise, with many construction works undertaken in recent years, including landscaping.

The latest expansion included a new entrance, created by Regal Innovations.

It’s a project with national significance, and the work also won Regal Innovations the Gold & Best Award in Commercial & Civil Construction – $4 million to $8 million at the TLA 2025 Landscape Excellence Awards.

The brief

The brief to Regal Innovations was to deliver a world-class entrance that would improve public access, enhance the aesthetic of the forecourt, and respect the symbolic importance of the site.

The project required the redevelopment of the Southern Entrance, extension of works 30

into Poppy’s Carpark, reconfiguration of the Main Building Forecourt, and preparation of the Parade Ground for national events such as Anzac Day. The design prioritised accessibility, legibility, durability, and dignity. The landscape needed to feel permanent and serene, without distracting from the gravity of the memorial.

More than 25,000m2 of public domain were addressed. Features included over 2000m² of exposed aggregate footpaths, 12,500m² of turf, garden beds containing around 8000 plants, and the reinstatement of the red-gravel Parade Ground walk.

One of the defining visual elements was the softscape design, which mirrored levels and alignments across both sides of the forecourt, requiring exacting detail and finish. The scale of this symmetry presented both a visual opportunity and a technical challenge.

Scope of works

This scope of works formed a part of the Australian War Memorial’s expansion, delivering a high-detail landscape and civil program across more than 25,000m² of ceremonial and public domain space.

Because of the nature of the site, the client expected the highest level of care and performance across all stages of the project. It was understood from the outset that the works would be subject to public visibility and scrutiny. Every square metre had to meet both functional requirements and the unspoken expectations of the veteran community, visitors, and the nation.

Softscape works included installation of more than 12,500m2 of turf, construction of garden beds, soil preparation and mulching, and installation and commissioning of a site-wide irrigation system.

Hardscape works included more than 2000m² of exposed aggregate concrete footpaths, granite paving and feature edging, concrete and gravel pathways, including the reinstatement of the Parade Ground. Surfaces were chosen to match the memorial’s architectural language and meet durability and slip-resistance standards.

Civil and drainage works involved installation of stormwater drainage systems and subsoil pits, trenching, service conduits, and civil preparation for all landscape features, plus structural support and base works for stone elements installed by other contractors.

The Regal Innovations team also installed seating, bollards, bins and bike racks, along with interpretive signage and commemorative elements.

The project included ongoing landscape establishment works, fertilisation, pest control and irrigation tuning to ensure healthy growth.

Plantings

The project involved around 8000 plants, along with turf and underlay soil, all chosen to ensure durability under heavy foot traffic while remaining in harmony with surrounding architecture.

Bobcats four sale A regional council recently took delivery of four Bobcat zero-turn mowers to run alongside its Bobcat skid steer loader, underlining the value of quality product and local service.

rmidale Mower and Chainsaw Centre has been servicing its local region for around 45 years. Current owners Sam and Kirrilly Ritchie took on the business at the end of 2021.

“We were keen to get out of mining and do something for ourselves. It was a real lifestyle change,” Sam told Landscape Contractor magazine. “It’s our first go at lawnmowers and outdoor power equipment. I was in opencut mining for 25 years. I’m a diesel mechanic by trade, and I grew up in and around the rural sector.”

While Armidale Mower and Chainsaw Centre offers several brands of outdoor power equipment, Sam holds Bobcat equipment in high regard. Armidale Regional Council clearly agrees with that view. It recently purchased one ZT3500 and three ZT6000 Bobcat zeroturns from Sam and Kirrilly.

“We’ve dealt with Armidale Mower and Chainsaw for many years now,” he said.

“We’d been looking at different brands and models of mowers for almost the two years I’ve been with the council, and the overall robustness of the Bobcats was a big contributing factor.

“The ZT3500 with the 48-inch deck is being used to maintain our cemetery,” he said. “We needed the narrow deck to fit between the headstones and gravesites.

“One of the 52-inch models is what we call our ‘centre’ mower. It does all the open-space recreation areas, like Central Park in the middle

Taking autonomous mowing from inspiration to operation A move to autonomous mowing need not be a stressful exercise.

T

his is a familiar scenario: a commercial landscape maintenance operation identifies autonomous mowers as valuable to its operation, and asks, “How do we get started integrating autonomous mowing into our business?”

Typically, the interest in autonomous or driverless mowing is inspired by an ongoing labour shortage. There’s a lack of workers to complete the existing workload, juggling staff between jobs to meet deadlines, and difficulties with current staff members that are unreliable and less than motivated.

The people in operations have had a glimpse of the future and want to be an industry leader in this technology and stand out as an early adopter. They also hope to get ahead of competition that may or may not be evaluating autonomous mowers. Landscape businesses inquiring about autonomy are looking to grow revenue beyond the current capacity, break the revenue plateau, and be able to take on more work with fewer people, scaling the business.

Ultimately, they want to be a landscape operation that is less reliant on erratic human labour and more reliant on consistent machine labour. The goal is not to replace people, but to augment the strong workforce they have with technology that benefits both individual workers and the business.

Two main types

Autonomous mowers fall into two groups.

Installed autonomous mowers are put in place and that’s where they live, mowing the same ground again. In the case of older installs, the machines are contained and controlled via ground wires. This would be equivalent to a grass-cutting ‘Roomba’.

Newer versions of installed autonomy are controlled by GPS or RTK, mowing in a stripe pattern. An installed mower is often scheduled to mow every day or every other day, and it returns to its charging station when the job is complete.

Integrated autonomous mowers are included within a commercial landscape mowing operation alongside other petrol and electric mowers. In this system a trained, dedicated operator mows the defined boundaries in nearly any configuration that 38

allows 10 to 15-foot safety zones around obstacles. In general, these autonomous mowers can cope with between one and three acres per hour depending on conditions.

Understanding commercial autonomous mowing

Generally, autonomous mowers in today’s market are capable of striped, unobstructed, open-area mowing. Most can navigate in and around obstructions, leaving a safety buffer around obstacles, which is then mowed manually (either before, during, or after the autonomous unit is clear of the area). In most cases, the operator teaches the mower its boundaries and then the plan is set – teach once, cut again.

While autonomous mowing is underway, the operator remains within sight of the mowers as they complete detailed handwork. The operator always carries a remote emergency device to immediately stop all mowers.

Take time to evaluate

Instead of focusing on the product itself, potential buyers should first consider evaluating the systems, or support mechanisms, provided by autonomousmowing suppliers. Responsive support is

critical with emerging technology. Then consider a demonstration to evaluate the autonomous mowers’ safety, ease-of-use, reliability, and productivity. Focusing on the autonomous infrastructure around the product sets an operation up for success.

As you zero in on certain suppliers, make sure there’s a strong case for their product as it pertains to your portfolio of work, or projected work. • Who do I turn to if there is a problem?

• Is the software company separate from the mower manufacturer?

• How long is the autonomous mower expected to last?

• What is the warranty?

Mining wants what landscapers have How a backyard idea grew legs, conquered civil works, and has now been scaled up after the mining giants came knocking.

I

“If it works on a skid steer, what happens

when we put it on a 100-tonne loader?” the miners wondered.

Mining sites have always struggled with oversize boulders causing blockages, slowing production, and burning hours of downtime while someone with a hammer on an excavator tried to work it free it at the primaries.

Mining accepted that as ‘the way it is’ until someone looked at the FlipScreen already proving itself across the landscaping sector and said, “Hang on…why don’t we screen the material before it hits the feeder?”

Meet the WL3000

Calling the WL3000 a ‘bucket’ feels like calling Uluru a ‘stone’. This thing is colossal.

Unlike the rest of FlipScreen’s lineup, it’s not an attachment or a simple add-on. It’s an integrated screening system built onto the chassis of a 100-tonne mining loader.

It takes the same rotating action every landscaper knows – the same action powering an S45, BL85 or E55 – and scales it into something so huge, capable, and effective that even seasoned miners go quiet when they see it.

Key numbers

Here are a few stats on the WL3000: • A screening area of roughly 373 square feet; • up to 1500 tonnes per hour throughput; • purpose-built design replacing around 32 tonnes with around 36 tonnes of engineered structure; and • a screen designed to give the primary crusher a smooth, oversize-free feed.

The WL3000 only exists because the landscaping industry proved the FlipScreen principle works. The motion, screeningchamber design, and philosophy didn’t change from the buckets landscapers use every day.

What began as a handy way to clean topsoil, blend compost, remove rocks/ concrete, and tidy material on suburban projects has now become a frontline solution on iron-ore mines, coal operations, copper and gold sites, and opal and specialty mines.

Engineering that thinks sideways

Scaling something up for mining isn’t as simple as ‘make it bigger and thicker’. Mining loads punish anything that’s merely upsized.

The loader becomes a colossal screening unit, purpose-built for run-of-mine work.

So FlipScreen’s engineering team – led by inventor Sam Turnbull – did what it was famous for and ignored convention.

Instead of brute force, FlipScreen used geometry – shapes inspired by everything from other mining equipment to the internal corrugations of cardboard – to deliver strength without unnecessary weight.

Check, check, and check again Anna Turner advocates a checklist and thorough verification of supplied information to avoid oversights and errors in pricing.

I

’ve been pricing landscape projects for more than 20 years and I still make mistakes daily. I will for as long as I do this job. So, what to do about it?

I’ve set up a series of checks that help me reduce the mistakes.

First thing

The first thing I do is read all the documentation carefully. I go through the landscape design drawings, specifications, and architectural drawings to gain a firm understanding of the site conditions and access. I then make a list of items within the landscape scope and a list of items I’m excluding from 52

the quote. The list of exclusions helps me understand how the build will unfold and allows me to account for things like machine-hire charges more accurately.

Site versus drawings

Before I start measuring, I always check the drawing is to scale. It’s ideal to do a site visit and check the site measurements match those in the drawings, but if you can’t visit the site, at the very least check the drawing is to scale. You’d be surprised how many times the scale is labelled incorrectly on a drawing.

The process of reading the drawings and measuring up allows me to digest how different elements on the site interact, and

how the project needs to be built. At this point I like to flag any discrepancies within the documentation with the Landscape Architect (LA) and get those cleared up before I start pricing. It isn’t always possible to get the answers quickly enough, but it’s more efficient if you can.

I price each item in the order I would build it.

I start with demolition and excavations, move through the hardscape elements, and finish with planting and mulching. Pricing this way reduces my chances of missing any costs.

Colleague sanity check

While I price, I write notes.

Quantities (BoQ). Detailed descriptions give the client confidence I’ve covered everything, while at the same time protecting against any misunderstanding.

I write a list of clarifications that I include with the quote. These clarifications, along with the BoQ descriptions, clear up any discrepancies between my pricing and what the client/LA might be expecting. I always write a clarification if I have priced to build/do something that goes against the documentation.

I also write internal notes to the build team. Of course, they will only see the notes if we win the job, but this is the best time to write them. I write them while my decisions are fresh in my head. The notes go a long way towards handing over the job, and they force me to double check my choices.

I’m not afraid to ask colleagues for their opinion when I’m pricing something difficult. I often ring a trusted colleague bounce ideas off and work through all the option before I start with the calculator.

Once I’ve finished pricing the whole project I go back through and check my work. First, I check I’ve priced all the items on the list I made at the start of the process. Then I check to make sure the rates are sitting where I expected them to. I never look at rates while pricing because I don’t want the rate to influence my costing, but I do check them at the end. I look at the rates to spot any mistakes I may have made, like typos or missing a cost. If I have made a mistake like this, a rate check usually picks it up.

One of the most important steps is to get a colleague sanity check. My work doesn’t go out the door without a colleague casting an eye over it first. Don’t forget this step.

Accuracy

The final layer of checking comes once we’ve won the work. You may say it’s too late by then, but it’s better to know a problem early on, when you have more time to rectify it, than later in the build.

Handover to the build team is important.

If the team spots a mistake or underpricing, that’s the time to plan how to claw the money back. Keeping the budget front and centre helps the team to work with it, because no matter the mistake, now we have to wear it.

It’s important to check the allowances what happens on site against the quote.

Ask, “How many square metres did they lay in a day?” and adjust all your future pricing around that. The more information you have from the site, the more accurate your pricing can be.

Client management

Last, we need to manage the client.

Some mistakes are not directly our fault.

The most common cause is the client misunderstanding or changing their mind.

Clarifications come into play here. Use them to gently push back to the client to point out what is in the contract versus their understanding/desires. An absolute must is to walk the client through the contract before they sign. This helps manage their expectations and gives them confidence in the contract.

You can never eliminate mistakes, but you can reduce them by following the right processes. Continuously try to improve the accuracy of your pricing by getting feedback from the build team and close the loopholes by learning from the mistakes that do come your way.

TAFE NSW equips small business iena, 18, is defying the numbers. Only 34 per cent of business owners in NSW are female and only 12 per cent of all gardeners are female, with an average working age of 39.

“My love of plants and gardens was inspired by my English grandmother’s beautiful garden,” she said. “But my whole family has a passion for gardening and horticulture. Working outdoors appealed to me, especially after the restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic – I was sick of being inside all the time.

“I also wanted to prove myself in a male-dominated field and jumped at the chance to take on an apprenticeship. I learnt on the job in a couple of different types of companies and knew I wanted to bring together all my interests and skills to work for myself. Our TAFE NSW teachers’ knowledge was practical and challenging, and they went above and beyond to help me to learn more advanced aspects of the industry.

“Starting my own business was a great opportunity that all just fell into place. I love

Guest status in Taipei delivered more than medals ever could Trevor Schwenke, CEO of WorldSkills Australia, updates the fortunes of the Australian contingent at the third WorldSkills Asia competition in Taipei.

emoving the prospect of medals can, paradoxically, be one of the most effective things you do for a young competitor. That was the premise when WorldSkills Australia accepted guest status at the third WorldSkills Asia Competition in Taipei in late November 2025. Sixteen members of the Skillaroos Training Squad – roughly one-third of the group preparing for WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 – competed without eligibility for official awards or placement on the leaderboard.

The outcome exceeded every expectation we had for an early-cycle training exercise.

Great results

Across 14 skill categories, including three that have not appeared in an Australian international team for more than 10 years (Autobody Repair, Industrial Control, and Web Technologies), Australia’s competitors faced a field of 320 entrants from 28 countries. The environment was higher

in standard and intensity than Australia’s National Championships.

Every Australian competitor improved on their domestic scores, in several cases by substantial margins. Had guest performances been counted, the delegation would have earned one silver, one bronze, and one Medallion for Excellence.

Learning

More valuable than any hypothetical result, however, was the acceleration in technical and mental development. Competitors returned with new benchmarking data, revised training priorities, and a clearer understanding of the gap that still exists – and how rapidly that gap is closing.

Beyond the workshop floor, the event reinforced the broader role of skills competitions. Thousands of Taiwanese secondary students visited daily, engaging with competitors and experts. Several

members of the Australian team reported conversations that visibly shifted students’ perceptions of vocational pathways.

The formal elements – President Lai Chingte’s address at the Opening Ceremony, the multilingual oaths, the scale of the venue – left a lasting impression on the squad. They now possess a tangible reference point for what ‘world-class’ looks and feels like.

Real work

Taipei confirmed a principle WorldSkills Australia has long held: early, high-intensity exposure, free from the distortion of medal pressure, is one of the fastest ways to build a competitive international team.

The real work for Shanghai 2026 begins now, but it begins from a stronger position than it would have a short time ago.

JCB was founded in a 12ft x 15ft lock-up garage in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, by Joseph Cyril Bamford CBE in 1945 – on the same day as his son Anthony was born.

he 80th birthday celebrations of JCB and the founder’s son, Lord Bamford, in 2025 began by stepping back in time to where it all began, with Lord Bamford unveiling a blue heritage plaque on the spot where the original garage stood in High Street, Uttoxeter. Lord Bamford’s father had rented the lock-up garage – which had no electricity – for 30 shillings a week, and it was there he made his first product, a farm trailer built largely from wartime scrap, which he sold for £45 at Uttoxeter market.

Mr Bamford stayed at the garage for 18 months until the owner asked him to leave because she didn’t approve of him working on a Sunday. He then moved down the road to a stable block at Crakemarsh, a few miles north of the town.

Good memories

Unveiling the plaque at Hollydene House, Uttoxeter, Lord Bamford said, “My earliest memory of the business is of me playing in my father’s workshop. Other than my time at school and my apprenticeship in France with another company, I’ve been around ever since.”

“We have developed the business and products along the way enormously. Probably one of the greatest pleasures for me has been 58

“As we celebrate JCB’s 80th birthday, it’s wonderful to be back at the spot where it all began and to mark the location with a special blue plaque. I’m delighted that in a small way we can highlight where it all began and reflect on the continuing importance of our home county of Staffordshire.”

Classics

At the ceremony, Uttoxeter Deputy Mayor Councillor Aaron Mansfield added: “It is a source of great pride that Uttoxeter was the birthplace of one of the country’s most successful manufacturing companies and we are delighted to officially mark the spot where the business began as it celebrates its 80th anniversary.”

Later, Lord Bamford arrived back at the JCB World HQ in Rocester and was greeted by more than 3500 employees lining the Lakeside Works’ pathways to pay tribute and to celebrate his and JCB’s birthdays. A cavalcade procession marked milestones and showcased machines he has introduced since becoming Chairman in 1975.

The cavalcade starred the first Loadall from 1977, the classic 3CX and the world speed

record-breaking JCBGT backhoe, the 1991 Fastrac tractor and its 2019 World’s Fastest Tractor protégé, the multi-award winning 19C-1E electric mini excavator, followed by the Pothole Pro and game-changing hydrogen backhoe and hydrogen Loadall.

Boxed

The procession also featured eight former students of the JCB Academy who have forged successful careers with the company.

It was Lord Bamford’s vision to found the school which opened in 2010 with the vision of producing the engineers and business leaders of the future. In partnership with high-profile companies such as Rolls-Royce, Toyota and Hex Group, it has gone on to educate more than 3500 students from across Staffordshire and Derbyshire, with every student either entering employment or further education.

The gathered crowds were also treated to the unveiling of a special JCB 3CX ‘Backhoe in a Box’ – life-size, 3CX Sitemaster backhoe packaged in the same way as toy manufacturer Britains packages the 1:32 scale models of the JCB machine. It will be displayed beside the JCB lake until January, for members of the public to see.

“In fact, nine British plants have opened in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, and Wrexham during his tenure. JCB has been backing Britain since 1945, and with renewed energy under his leadership. Today we thank him for that leadership.”

Still here

Addressing the crowds of employees, Lord Bamford said: “My father would have been proud of JCB at 80. We have great products

and great people making a difference in the world. We continue to hold true to his values of ‘jamais content’ (French for ‘never content’) and ‘always looking for a better way’.”

“While my father retired at the age of 59, I – along with JCB – shall be 80 tomorrow and I’m still here.”

The day concluded with a formal party for Lord Bamford at the World HQ, with more than 100 invited guests, including dozens of retired people with whom Lord Bamford has worked through the decades.

After the cavalcade, JCB Chief Executive Officer Graeme Macdonald paid tribute to Lord Bamford, saying: “When he became Chairman in 1975, this was JCB’s only factory.

Today, JCB has 22 plants around the world and more than 19,000 employees. As we have expanded globally over the past 50 years, Lord Bamford was greeted by more than 3500 employees at JCB World HQ in Rocester, England.

Excellence recognised More than 550 members, sponsors, suppliers, and industry professionals celebrated the ACT and NSW’s best in landscape design, construction, and maintenance at the 2025 Landscape Excellence Awards.

ecognised as the pinnacle of accolades for landscapers, the Landscape Excellence Awards highlight innovation, craftsmanship, and dedication across every corner of the industry, from large-scale commercial projects to intimate residential designs.

A total of 33 Gold Medals were presented to deserving recipients at a sold-out gala dinner in November 2025, including ‘Best in Category’ and the ‘Glazed Co. Landscaper of the Year’ titles for outstanding entries in each specialty.

The evening’s host, TV presenter and comedian Claire Hooper, brought her trademark humour and warmth, keeping the audience laughing and inspired throughout the night.

Looking ahead, the association’s commitment to strengthening that collective voice has never been more important. n an industry as broad and interconnected as landscaping, progress is never the work of a single voice. It’s the combined effort of designers and builders, maintenance professionals, commercial contractors, pool builders, arborists, growers, suppliers, and businesses of every size, from students and sole traders to companies employing hundreds.

This year marks a significant transition for Landscaping Victoria (LV). The association extends its sincere thanks to outgoing President Ian Barker for his leadership and the foundation built over the past two years.

His work, alongside the Board and LV team, has positioned the organisation with clarity, confidence, and momentum – a platform from which we now continue to grow. Ian will remain on the Board to ensure a smooth transition and will continue to contribute to the industry and association he cares so much about.

New man

Stepping into the presidency, Mathew Wandmaker brings industry experience and a long-standing commitment to service. As Director of Blueridge Property Maintenance, Mat represents a vital sector of LV membership and understands firsthand the diversity of the challenges and opportunities across the wider industry.

“For me, stepping into the presidency is about strengthening and expanding our membership across the green industry,” said Mat. “This role is my way of giving back to an industry that has supported me through thick and thin, and I’m incredibly proud to be part of an association that represents so much more than just landscapers.”

Looking forward

A focus for the year ahead is the continued effort to elevate LV’s voice to government at both state and federal levels. This is more important than ever at a time when government is looking for leadership and guidance to assist with its flagship housing and carbon-emission policies. LV members’ expertise in design, horticulture, construction, and ongoing land care has them uniquely positioned to contribute to the conversation and further their interests.

Licencing proposed for inspectors

Master Landscapers of South Australia CEO Chris Wiltshire highlights a new discussion paper and suggests landscapers should give it consideration.

T

he South Australian Government’s Consumer and Business Services (CBS) has released a discussion paper seeking industry opinion on regulating building inspectors.

Reading the tea leaves, the proposal to have building inspection become a licenced trade will receive strong support from the construction sector and, as a result, will likely be adopted. On the face of it, the proposal seems irrelevant for landscapers. However, the Australian Standard that governs building inspections (AS 4349) refers to assessments of buildings (inclusive of outbuildings like sheds) and other structures like retaining walls, paving and fencing. Furthermore, the proposal targets inspectors who assess both

Class 1 (dwellings) and Class 10 (outbuilding) structures. Regulating inspectors is a move in the right direction that has the full support of Master Landscapers South Australia (MLSA), ensuring standards are met and punishments provided if such professionals step out of line.
