ITS World Congress will also be investigating policy and governance, business models, and, importantly, international cooperation. What’s more, an exciting addition is the Innovation Zone in partnership with the California Mobility Centre. Serving as a launchpad for emerging, intelligent transportation products, services, and business models, the Innovation Zone will provide industry leaders and investors with opportunities to interact with featured, early-stage companies toward a goal of commercialisation. As a sneak peek into the future, the Innovation Zone is not to be missed.
Visitors will also hear from the top seven finalists in the 2022 Global ITS Innovation Competition. Each will pitch their solution in front of a distinguished panel of judges comprised of ITS experts and industry thought leaders. This competition is a chance for early-stage enterprises to engage funders, private companies, government and other leaders to facilitate the ideation of bold new solutions to transform how we live and move.
For the ITS America Events team, who are in the business of building businesses, it is especially rewarding to help bring the ITS World Congress back to the United States for the first time since Detroit hosted the event in 2014.
LA is redefining transportation
The location couldn’t be more appropriate. Los Angeles is redefining transportation. Already, more than 60,000 electric vehicles ply the city streets, with consumer adoption fuelled by rebates, tax credits, carpool lane incentives, and rapidly growing charging infrastructure. Los Angeles is also moving to electrify its fleet of 10,000 vehicles to lead the United States in relying on carbon-free energy. In the area of public transit, 28 Metro projects will be completed by the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, expanding transit options and accessibility.
These and other investments are being made with ambitious goals in mind: 100% renewable energy use sector-wide by 2025 and net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Already, Los Angeles is on track to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 per cent within the next three years. The city is an inspiration and the perfect backdrop for the ITS
World Congress. It is clear that intelligent mobility is safer, greener, and smarter. Most importantly, implementation is accelerating. ITS World Congress 2022 is, therefore, not only a look into the future but also a celebration of our success today. Sensys Networks will unveil an all-new vehicle detection sensor, FlexMag Mini, that installs in a fraction of the time of inductive loops – two to five minutes per sensor.
As the company points out, in-ground detection is known for its unmatched accuracy, but loops require lengthy lane closures and cutting up the pavement to install or replace. With FlexMag Mini, transportation agencies can get the benefit of accurate detection for any application with minimal lane closures. Plus, transportation studies have shown that FlexMag outlasts loops by 30%.
“We introduced the original wireless FlexMag to replace vulnerable loops, which break too easily,” says Bill Weber, VP of sales and marketing,

The Congress element of the ITS World Congress kicks off on Sunday, 18 September with a packed program that continues throughout the event. A great number of the sessions are forward-looking and the one being staged by Google from 13:30 – 15:00 Special Interest Session Making the AI Connection for Next-generation Transportation, is a case in point.
As Monali Shah, head of industry solutions, Google Public Sector, explains, analytics, AI and machine learning are gaining more awareness but can still feel intimidating.
AI and analytics are not just buzzwords. They are being used to underpin data driven decision-making, as well as gain new insights to improve safety, mobility, climate resilience, infrastructure investments, knowledge management, and more,” Shah, who is moderating the session, explains.
“At Google, we are democratising the use of technology by making it accessible

Accidents are reduced by 40 per cent, meaning the number of injuries and deaths are reduced by 40 per cent. Travel time is reduced by up to 15 per cent, so traffic flow is increased by up to 22 per cent. Overall freeway delay is reduced by up to 30 per cent, and throughput is increased by up to 28 per cent. The incident arrival time of emergency responders is faster by 15 per cent. Carbon monoxide and other emissions-related pollutants are reduced by up to 30 per cent.
The cloud-based system is shareable and can be operated by multiple agencies simultaneously, allowing for seamless inter-agency cooperation and more efficient operations. iNET is currently used in over 40 cities, which Parsons says makes it the most operated traffic management software in the world.

IIRD to highlight tyre safety screening
RD will present the company’s Tire Anomaly and Classification System (TACS), a proven technology for improving traffic safety and reducing emissions. Most commercial vehicle operators follow rigorous tyre safety regimes, but it is not always realistic to manually monitor and inspect commercial vehicles before a load is dispatched or after a trip is completed.
Underinflated tyres not only decrease the efficiency of a vehicle, meaning more fuel is used, but they also pose an increased safety risk due to the effects on vehicle handling, increased rolling resistance, and by causing overheating leading to delamination and failure.
TACS deployments deliver big improvements in safety, efficiency, and user experience without the need to stop every vehicle for inspection.
TTS enabling drivers to see the light
Traffic Technology Services (TTS) is the leading provider of technologies and information supporting today’s connected vehicle applications. Audi’s TLI allows drivers to be more confident, providing green light recommended speed advisories that can provide a recommended speed up to the limit to help the driver ride a “green wave.” Both an Audi Travolution report and a US Department of Transportation AERIS Research Program Report found that minimising stop-and-go driving can lead to more than 15 per cent greater fuel-efficiency when drivers are able to respond to predicted traffic signal changes. That’s substantial, given in-vehicle technologies and lightweight materials in vehicles contributing toward efficiency can often have larger cost implications toward next-generation vehicle development compared with tools that help make small adjustments to driving behaviours.
And it’s not the only major car manufacturer to use the TTS system. Ford China launched
North America to identify flat, missing, or underinflated tyres on heavy commercial vehicles. Inspectors are empowered to levy fines and have the authority to take vehicles out of service.
The need for TACS is clear as more than two per cent of vehicles at some locations have tyres with problems sufficient to warrant taking them off the road.
