Q-FREE INTRODUCES LATEST BACKOFFICE TOLLING TECHNOLOGY

Testing times for Tatweer in Abu Dhabi If you’re taking your driving test in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, you won’t be assessed by a human. Before you are awarded a licence, Tatweer’s smart driving test vehicle uses intelligent automation in a bid to make evaluation of driving ability fairer.

“The system replicates some assessment and guidance of the examiner to totally eliminate subjectivity,” explains Abdulrahman Majed Renawi, solutions manager at Tatweer (pictured). “At the end, you will either pass or fail based on machine-evaluated parameters.”

Driving faults – for example, not signalling when changing lane – are given a numerical value. If a driver makes enough of these, their overall score will drop and they will fail the test.

Abu Dhabi Police initiated the idea, which Tatweer developed. Authorities also now use data from the tests to establish correlations with driving behaviour and crashes, and adjust the test accordingly. “They might modify the test weighting system to focus more on some criteria than others,” says Renawi.

How maps and traffic data deliver actionable insights for smart cities At the heart of every digital transformation is data.

Data is fundamental to urban planning and policy, improving road safety and developing solutions that improve our lives.

As someone with a transport planning background, I understand the essential role of data in building models, digital twins, and forecasting the future. But its true value emerges when placed in the context of a map. Maps transform diverse mobility data into actionable intelligence, providing spatial context for urban planning, helping analysts understand the drivers of travel demand and road network constraints.

For example, a city wanting to reduce accidents might want to correlate historic speeds to accident data by plotting this on a map to highlight areas of concern. A road agency managing traffic needs to know where congestion is happening in real time to implement policy, deploy operational staff or adapt signal timings.

Cities globally are already benefiting from collaborations with mapmakers. In preparation for the Paris Olympics, the road authority, Direction des Routes d’Île-deFrance utilized PTV Group’s traffic data platform leveraging TomTom’s live and historic traffic data to plan and manage road networks effectively, ensuring roads remained open, and traffic flowed smoothly during the event. Similarly, Dubai authorities leverage TomTom’s data to monitor congestion hotspots, inform traffic management policies, and provide real-time information to drivers. In Riyadh, TomTom’s historic traffic data guides longterm urban planning and policymaking.

Mapping data is vital for smart city planning. Collaborating with experienced mapmakers ensures digital maps are accurate, fresh, and as close to reality as possible, enhancing their reliability and the effectiveness of smart urban planning efforts.

ACCUVER EXPANDS INTO V2X MARKET Accuver, a global leader in mobile network testing solutions, has expanded into the Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) market through its recent acquisition of Wayties.

Wayties is an engineering startup company working in the C-ITS and CAV (Connected Automated Vehicle) areas.

It was founded in 2015 and is based in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, South Korea.

Accuver says that the acquisition strengthens the company’s ability to offer comprehensive V2X test solutions,

covering all phases of development, deployment and optimisation.

With Accuver’s V2X test solutions, customers can obtain Omniair certifications for their V2X equipment, as the solutions support Basic Safety Message (BSM) performance and conformance tests. These solutions are fully compliant with key industry standards, including SAE J2945/1, J3161/1 and J2735.

solutions such as roadside units (RSUs) and onboard units (OBUs). The company recently secured a waiver from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), enabling the deployment of cellular-based C-V2X technology in the 5.9 GHz frequency band.

HATS OFF FOR COHDA’S MK6 PROXIMITY DETECTION Cohda Wireless is displaying what it claims is arguably the most advanced and missionready connected vehicle technology solution available, the MK6 proximity detection.

The combined MK6 RSU (road-side unit) and OBU (on-board unit) offers the most comprehensive connectivity capability as standard features, including DSRC, C-V2X, LTE/5G and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth. certification from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US, CE in Europe, the UKCA in the United Kingdom, Canada’s ISED and South Korea’s KC. As a participant in the FCC Joint Waiver programme, Cohda was the first to receive the green

light for C-V2X (B47) from the FCC for its original equipment products.

Cohda has also taken its MK6 technology underground, into the highly safety-aware deep mining sector. GPS does not penetrate underground but radio communication works. Hence, the MK6 technology is being used by mining companies for deployment on their mobile machinery – very often extremely large with very limited visibility for an operator.

Furthermore, says Andrea Ash, Cohda’s vice president of marketing, the technology has been adapted to fit into the headlamp of miners which allows mobile machine operators to also know when people are near machines.

HYPER-NETWORK AT THE ITS ASIA PACIFIC FORUM Hyper-network at next year’s ITS Asia Pacific Forum in Suwon, Korea, where the theme will be hyperconnected cities. Suwon is a prominent tourist destination known for vibrant culture, festivals and Suwon Hwaseong, a UNESCO World Heritage site showcasing Korea’s architectural excellence. Leveraging synergies Kapsch TrafficCom’s Carolin Treichl talks to Daily News about opportunities for tolling and traffic management in Africa and Europe International ITS companies in established markets are increasingly looking elsewhere for new opportunities. For example, Kapsch TrafficCom, based in Austria, has turned its attention to the Global South.

“Africa is enormously diverse, and it is very, very different from country to country,” explains Carolin Treichl, the company’s executive vice president, Europe, Middle East & Africa. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, but weighing up commercial possibilities with political stability has led it to focus on opportunities specifically in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Tanzania, Botswana and Mozambique.

To establish relationships, Kapsch tends to partner with international players which have a local footprint. “It’s a question of leveraging synergies, because it can be that a certain partner is also invested in other African countries,” Treichl explains.

While the continent’s diversity is considerable, one thing is constant: it is a less developed traffic market than, say, Europe or the US. While Kapsch is known for its work in sustainability, for instance, that is not a key focus for African markets.

Instead, improving road infrastructure and

road safety are the two main concerns.

Rather than global navigation satellite system (GNSS) tolling, African countries tend to rely on toll plazas; and they are likely to favour relatively straightforward ITS tech such as adaptive traffic light control.

“From a technological perspective, there’s a lot of potential,” says Treichl.

“There is a demand in both of our key segments, traffic and tolling. I am a huge fan of acting as focused as possible; I really want to focus on our strengths.”

“You also have to take into account that, if you have poor infrastructure, it has an impact on the costs of trade among African countries,” points out Treichl. “So it’s not about safety only, it’s also an economic thing.”

Speaking of which, Nigeria is often seen as an economic powerhouse in Africa. “Yes, that’s 1,000% true,” Treichl says. “From a market demand, economic and also from a potential perspective, it’s definitely one of the top three countries in the whole of Africa.” As a result, competition from international companies is intense.

While the European market is mature by comparison to Africa, Europe still presents

significant opportunities, Treichl insists. Demand is shifting, with a greater emphasis on city mobility.

“The urban segment in Europe is of increased importance in the midterm and long-term as well as the short-term,” Treichl says. Smart traffic management will continue to be key, along with demand management to proactively alter driver behaviour, assessing the potential of artificial intelligence, and new uses for data.

“Also the key question for all of us is: how will cities look in future? Will there be any traffic in the city centre?”

Treichl asks.

As electric vehicle ownership rises, replacing fuel taxes is another concern for city and regional authorities.

Alternative forms of revenue-raising, such as congestion charging schemes, are of increasing interest - not least because of their role in reducing car usage and improving air quality.

“Demand is different, because the socalled ‘developed’ countries are now in a different stage,” smiles Treichl. “But the market in European countries, at the end of the day, is very good.”

Florence does it the right way The Italian city of Florence has been using GEO.works software to issue traffic control permits since 2010 to manage activities within transportation right-of-way. And in 2019, the city added traffic ordinance management in 2019 from GEO.works.

GEO.works offers off-the-shelf business process management software for public agencies to facilitate internal and external coordination of traffic control activities such as construction and special events. Currently, 85 government agencies across the US and Europe use GEO.works.

The software automates the coordination of traffic management/ control, allowing multiple stakeholders to review right-of-way activity requests with a collective focus on overall impacts. This ensures continuity of traffic flow for essential services, commerce, and the public.

On the Tesla stand, lunch is being served. Or it will be one day, by a Tesla robot that has the same AI and sensor technology as the new fully autonomous Model Y electric Tesla.

Visitors to the Tesla stand will see a model of the robot as well as the Model Y which is now available and is sitting alongside a steely looking Tesla pickup truck. An all-wheel drive, dual motor delivers instant torque to the Model Y which has an estimated range of around 533km, according to the manufacturer. There is more than 2,100 litres of cargo space and seating for five.

Active safety features can help reduce impact severity or prevent accidents from happening altogether. Features such as forward collision warning, active emergency braking and lane departure avoidance all come as standard. Remote locking, key sharing and vehicle monitoring is done all through your phone.

Wherever and whenever fully autonomous driving highway infrastructure is ready, so is the Model Y. For those awaiting a Tesla robot-delivered lunch, that may be a few years off yet.
