e Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) has a range of smart tra c projects to highlight at #ITSDubai2024. Its Intelligent Transport Central Platform (ITCP) uses arti cial intelligence to integrate monitoring and incident management systems into a uni ed platform, enabling automatic detection of
problems on the roads. “Safety is priority number one,” Yousef Al Madani of Abu Dhabi Mobility (pictured) told Daily News. “ITCP will help reduce congestion and increase the e ciency of tra c management. We are using AI and Big Data, and giving the opportunity for companies to do proof of concepts. We also want to be the rst in the region to implement robotaxis.”
Its TXAI project features a eet of autonomous vehicles (self-driving taxis and mini-buses) operating on Yas and Saadiyat Islands, while the agency’s automated rapid transit (ART) project
uses AI for navigation and positioning.
e organisation is also showing o its Weigh in Motion system, which includes the installation of 12 smart electronic gates to accurately monitor the weight of commercial vehicles to enhance road safety and protect the emirate’s infrastructure.
Abu Dhabi Mobility’s commitment to safety and security also comes through in a scheme for school transport: the Salama system tracks school buses, allowing parents to see that their children have safely got on and o as they go to and from their studies.

City authorities all over the world are nding that, for congestion charging schemes to work in shifting urban commuters out of their cars, there must be reliable alternative modes in place. “Notable schemes including Singapore ERP, London congestion charge, Stockholm congestion tax and HOT lanes in the US have proved that congestion charging is a necessary next step to encourage travellers to use public transport,” says Zeina Nazer, co-founder of Cities Forum (pictured). “Dubai RTA Salik toll was implemented in 2007, with Dubai Metro implemented in 2009. Subsequently, In 2021, Abu Dhabi ITC toll system was implemented - equally proving to be successful.” Plans for road pricing require good business cases, explains Nazer, who is also technical expert for UK Department for Transport and chair of ITS UK RUC Forum. is year she chaired the rst RUC conference for MENA in Abu Dhabi, proving the commitment of the region in adopting road pricing. “It was a pleasure to showcase the examples of Dubai Salik and Abu Dhabi ITC tolling system as best practice to learn from,” she smiles. “I am proud to see local UAE players, like Tatweer, becoming key players - transitioning from being technology importers to becoming a lead solution provider expanding globally.”

AI in ITS must have ‘human focus’
Abbas Mohaddes, chairman of the board at Umovity (pictured), has attended all but two of the 30 ITS World Congresses held over his long and distinguished career. And in his role on the Congress board of directors, he knows – looking ahead to Atlanta 2025 - what makes successful global events tick: trust, in particular, is crucial.
“What are the use cases that we could learn from each other?” he says. “What are the deployments that we could share? How could we bring people together?” Making sure that all regions of the world feel included, wherever a Congress is held, is an important part of the mix.
And there have been signi cant shifts in the way the ITS industry thinks since the rst Congress in Paris in 1994. “When we
rst started, it was about vehicular movement and public transit,” he recalls. “But the mindset is changing. What do we have to do to serve people? How do we see mobility from the eyes of the consumer? What are the services we need to provide to our constituencies? is is very di erent from one region to another – and very di erent from metropolitan areas versus rural ones.”
In Atlanta, it will likely be hard to get away from the subject of generative AI and its applications in ITS but Mohaddes insists: “ e technology has to be leveraged for the safety and sustainability of mobility for humanity. The road to Atlanta: next year’s ITS World Congress will emphasise the importance of technology deployment to see road safety benefits, says ITS America CEO Laura Chace
It is North America’s turn to host the next ITS World Congress. After a successful, stimulating event in Dubai, the movers and shakers of the global ITS sector will head to Atlanta on 24-28 August 2025 at the Georgia World Congress Center.
e event will be hosted in partnership with ITS America and produced by RX. One of the premier sponsors will be Arcadis, whose global solutions director – mobility, Ramin Massoumi, is chairing the 2025 ITS World Congress Board of Directors.
Jaime McAuley, ITS America Events event director at RX, says Atlanta will showcase “a region leading in deploying technology to proactively address how we can deliver safer, greener, smarter mobility for all”.
Georgia Department of Transportation is a leader in advancing safety and sustainability in transportation – and there are a number of reasons why ITS professionals should make the trip, insists ITS America president & CEO Laura Chace. “Atlanta currently has the largest deployment of C-V2X [covering 1,200 signalised intersections] on
public infrastructure,” she explains. “It’s operational.”
Russell R. McMurry, commissioner of Georgia DoT, is eager to welcome ITS professionals from around the world: “It will allow us to showcase the innovation happening in Georgia while studying new advancements and technologies that can complement our continuous e orts to provide safe, sustainable transportation for all.”
Delegates will be able to visit Peachtree Corners in Metro Atlanta, a living laboratory to test emerging technologies through the city’s Curiosity Lab, a 500-acre technology park with a threemile roadway showcasing autonomous vehicles, 5G cellular Vehicle-to-Everything technology, plus smart streetlights and signals.
All this chimes well with the theme of #ITSAtlanta2025: ‘Deploying Today, Empowering Tomorrow’. “ ere’s a real emphasis on: ‘Let’s do some practical stu !’” says Chace. “We know that it takes some time to reap the bene ts from some of these technology solutions – so we really need to be planning today. And the
more that we can invest in technologies today, the more that we can empower tomorrow. I had the privilege of testifying on safety to the US Senate in the spring. And my theme was: we can take a proactive approach to safety by using technology – it’s a mindset shift, right? It means we need to be investing in this technology today to actually get the bene ts that we want, in terms of reducing crashes, reducing deaths.”
So what’s the message to the ITS community when it comes to #ITSAtlanta2025? “I’d say the rst thing is: put the money in your budget now for travel to Atlanta,” Chace laughs. “Mark the dates on your calendar, and look out this fall for the call for contributions – because in order to get a strong programme, we rely on all of the ITS community to submit strong proposals. We also have exhibitor sales open right now, and sponsorships. So if your company wants exposure to a global audience of multiple thousands of people in this space, you should be exhibiting and/or sponsoring at the ITS World Congress 2025 in Atlanta!”

Hazards come in many forms—brokendown vehicles, fog, potholes, and unexpected obstacles like animals on rural roads. These unpredictable conditions make driving risky. With systems like TomTom Hazard Warnings, drivers can receive real-time alerts about upcoming hazards, allowing them to anticipate and avoid dangerous situations. Systems like this can significantly reduce the chances of collisions and save lives.
TomTom uses a vast network of over 600 million connected devices, including vehicle sensors and GPS data, to create a real-time, highly accurate map of road conditions. Unlike traditional systems that may take minutes to update, TomTom’s push-based alerts deliver hazard notifications in just five seconds, ensuring drivers and vehicles can respond quickly.
Traffic hazard warnings can also be integrated into advanced driver assistance systems and automated vehicles. This technology helps vehicles adjust speed, change routes, or alert the driver through audio or visual cues, significantly improving road safety.
As connected and automated driving technology advances, traffic hazard warnings should be considered a standard feature in new vehicles sold. By making roads more predictable and providing drivers with timely information, these warnings have the potential to save lives and make journeys safer.
