Intertraffic Amsterdam 2022 will kick off in just a few weeks’ time and just one word sums up this much-anticipated event –special.

It is 50 years since the first Intertraffic Amsterdam was staged back in 1972. So, obviously, it’s a special year for what is widely acknowledged as the leading global event, covering mobility and related fields.

What makes Intertraffic Amsterdam so special is that it is the place to be for smart mobility, infrastructure, traffic management, road safety and parking. It features the largest international presentation of innovative mobility technology and solutions, all under one roof.

In attendance will be public and private parties and research institutes from across the entire mobility ecosystem. A one-stop shop for insights, future-proof solutions, business opportunities and a global peer network, Intertraffic Amsterdam 2022 will bring together close to 800 exhibitors spread over 13 exhibit halls, combined with a free-to-attend 120 session strong educational component, the Intertraffic Summit & Demonstration Programme.

Smart and innovative thinking will again be recognised when the winners of the 2022 Intertraffic Awards are announced on 29 March during the opening ceremony. This crucible of innovation has changed format this year with finalists each falling into one of the three new award categories: Green Globe, Inspiration and User Experience.

These new categories reflect three

key drivers for the industry: sustainability; real-world deployment of new solutions; and the enhancement of the experience of technology users themselves.

A special event within Intertraffic Amsterdam 2022 will be ITSUP where start-ups and innovators in the industry will share their mobility dreams with visitors and stakeholders across all modes and disciplines. A multitude of disruptive innovations will be presented. ITSUP programme components include knowledge and trend sessions; pitch sessions and mobility challenges; coaching sessions from successful scale-ups and accelerator organisations; and speed dates and other network and match-making activities.

The home of Intertraffic Amsterdam 2022 is Amsterdam RAI which is only ten minutes from Schiphol International Airport. The venue has its own train station and is well served by trams and other public transport. Tram 4 stops right in front of the RAI and will take you into the heart of Amsterdam.

The RAI, which has a large underground car park, is situated alongside Amsterdam’s A10 ring motorway (exit S109). Surrounded by a park, pavement cafés and restaurants, the RAI Exhibition and Congress Centre is also just a few minutes away from the heart of Amsterdam, with its lovely canals and countless attractions.

First staged in 1972, Intertraffic Amsterdam is undisputedly considered the leading global trade event on smart mobility, infrastructure, traffic management, road safety and parking. Over the years, Intertraffic has been responsible for identifying trends, launching new products, giving the world its first view of technological innovations and announcing a plethora of initiatives, new companies and major collaborations and joint ventures. ITSUP: making a reality of the startup dream

During Intertraffic, startups in the industry will take part in a special event: ITSUP.

In hall 6, innovators will share their mobility dreams with stakeholders across all modes and disciplines. Intertraffic Summit Programme expanded

Intertraffic’s free-to-attend knowledge programme has been significantly expanded. This year’s edition will feature no less than three Summit theatres, all conveniently grouped together in hall 7, plus an open stage, a network area to meet up with speakers and in- and outdoor demonstration areas. (see page 18)

Hot topics digitalisation and data

Hot topics, such as digitalisation and automation, artificial intelligence, the enormous growth in data collection and increasing connectivity will be covered as travellers need more information than ever before. The programme also deals with pressing issues and challenging subjects, such as achieving Green Deal objectives, vision zero, integrated mobility services and redesigning infrastructure. Next generation traffic management and the changing role of the road operator and how that is becoming an increasingly digital role is on the agenda as well.

Sustainability is also key. The question is not just how the challenges in cities are going to be met when it comes to liveability, safety and sustainability, which are integrated into traffic management solutions, but also the modal shifts, integrated mobility services, sustainable urban mobility plans and how to use public space in a more flexible way. These are all issues that will be addressed.

Trends revealed

The summit programme reveals several interesting trends this year. For instance, application of artificial intelligence to make roads safer; how to get from big data to smart traffic management; how to create smart data applications for the road operator and for the road user/traveller; and creating more traffic insights using data collected in all kinds of ways. Apparent from both the summit programme and the exhibition halls is the increasing optimisation of traffic monitoring using cloud technology and roadway analytics.

Serious gaming in a hacker escape bus, an urban strategy demo, wind and solarpowered vehicles, a climate-neutral, scalable hyperloop system, virtual reality games, delivery robots, last-mile automated solutions and a digitising streets and kerbs demo - these are just a few examples of what visitors can expect at the indoor demo area in hall 7.

The outdoor demo area at the RAI congress square (surrounded by all exhibition halls) will be the starting point for a demo drive in an automated shuttle from the Future Mobility Network and for a two-part demonstration of how direct communication between cars, cars and roadside equipment and cars and bicycles can improve safety on the road delivered to you by Volkswagen and the Province of Noord-Holland. Also present at the demo square is an innovative safety barrier from SMA Road Safety.

Smart and innovative thinking will again be awarded at the world’s largest, and best attended, trade event for the infrastructure, traffi¬c management, safety, parking, and smart mobility sectors, when the winners of the 2022 Intertraffic Awards are announced on 29 March during the opening ceremony.

A bumper list of 15 nominees has been selected, all in with a chance of winning a coveted Intertraffic Award. The nominees each fall into one of the three new award categories: Green Globe, Inspiration and User Experience.

The new categories reflect three key drivers for the industry: sustainability; real-world deployment of new solutions; and the enhancement of the experience of technology users themselves.

A record-breaking number of entries of an extremely high standard were received providing a difficult challenge for the independent, international jury of experts, specialising in the fields of infrastructure, safety, traffic management, parking and smart mobility.

After days of deliberation the 80 strong field was whittled down to the best 15.

Autonomous Bus Lane Enforcement (ABLE)

HAYDEN AI, USA

The system features a specially developed, high-quality mobile camera that is mounted on the inside of bus windshields to observe the road geometry. The solution captures and processes video, on the bus, of illegally parked cars, sending a data package to the local traffic enforcement department, allowing public agencies to enforce traffic rules cost effectively.

SmogStop

GRAMM BARRIER SYSTEMS, CANADA

SmogStop is an innovative new roadside noise barrier that not only absorbs noise but also, in a world first, uses sunlight to break down dangerous emissions, therefore reducing air pollution, creating cleaner air. These reductions are made possible by SmogStop’s aerodynamic design which generates vortices to enhance mixing of emissions with cleaner air, while a photocatalytic coating uses sunlight to help break down NOx and VOCs into harmless by-products. Independent field testing in Canada confirmed daily/hourly reductions of harmful pollutants of up to 92%/95% respectively.

“What counts is the added value of an innovation,” explains Pieter Litjens, chair of the Intertraffic Awards jury. “A lot of projects are called innovations – but in fact, they are projects which lead to an invention or to knowledge and new processes, a new product or whatever. But the key, to me, is: what’s the added value in practice? What comes next after the great project of developing something together is how to make sure that companies and city authorities can use it. When you want something to make an impact, you have to make sure that you focus heavily on the implementation. Without that, it’s nothing. Redefining smart and sustainable mobility

The Intertraffic Summit & Demonstration Programme is the place to rethink the mobility system and mitigate negative mobility effects together

This year’s Intertraffic Summit & Demonstration Programme will offer visitors essential tools to facilitate and make the most of this exciting phase in smart mobility transition. It is a place where visitors can gather information on mobility innovations or hear the latest product developments, find solutions to the many mobility challenges they are facing, seek business opportunities or potential partners, meet experts and debate with other stakeholders to speed up the mobility transition.

Hall 7 will feature no less than three Summit theatres, one open stage, a large networking area to meet up with speakers and an indoor demonstration area. The Intertraffic Summit & Demonstration Programme will offer over 120 solution pitches, demonstrations, interactive presentations, panel discussions, workshops and debates on solutions for the ever-growing accessibility, safety and climate problems. Renowned companies, cities and stakeholder organisations such as Swarco, 3M, Yunex Traffic, TomTom, Vitronic, Be-Mobile, Nissan,

Amazon Web Services, International Road Federation, Polis, Cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Teledyne Flir, Verra Mobility, EasyPark, Flowbird, WPS Parking Solutions and many others are in the line-up.

The presented mobility solutions and policy guidelines fully respond to the challenges in the sector such as further digitalisation and automation; the enormous growth in data collection; the increasing connectivity and information needs of the traveller; as well as the pressing climate issues. Specially ‘tipped for’ sessions are highlighted for policy makers of cities, road operators or technology vendors in the programme.

Keynotes

Keynotes in the summit programme vary. They range from smart urban mobility deployment, disruptive new mobility modes and creating liveable urban spaces to how to obtain and use tools to prepare for connected, cooperative and automated driving, connecting smart infrastructure and autonomous vehicles.

Visitors will gain unmatched knowledge into various methods and new technologies to improve road safety from companies including Nissan, Amazon, Heijmans, Vitronic, Parifex and SMA Road Safety. Topics covered will include improving safety with artificial intelligence (AI), nudging, local traffic safety analysers, automated speed enforcement and easy-to-install safety barriers and guardrails. Visitors will also gain new insights on methods to avoid casualties such as addressing illegal mobile phone use by drivers from Acusensus, dual vision technology for automatic incident detection and fire detection from Teledyne Flir. New safety barriers and new road concepts able to support the connected drive and, in perhaps the near future the autonomous drive, will be presented by ANAS.

Parking technology

Parking technology is well represented in the summit programme with presentations from major players such as EasyPark, WPS Parking Solutions,

Flowbird, ParkHelp and Intercomp. The presentations mainly focus on the convenience for the traveller, creating smart parking solutions in order to improve the customer journey, advanced vehicle identification technology and smart tools for on-street parking and smart kerbside management.

The summit sessions also cover mobility-as-a-service (MaaS). There is particular emphasis on cooperating in an ecosystem, successful MaaS-applications, integrated services, pay-as-you-go, moving from transit fare collection to mobility transactional engines and MaaS in the countryside.

Digital Twins and the Power of Predictive Maintenance from the International Road Federation and datadriven decision tools for road operators and vehicle data for road safety will also be high on the exciting agenda.

Great mobility opportunities

The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and Rijkswaterstaat, will present numerous interactive sessions and workshops paying particular attention to the great mobility opportunities offered by digitisation and data. The focus is on tackling mobility issues in relation to today’s urban problems; increasing urbanization; and pressure on available space; as well as safety; climate change; and liveability. With ever-increasing digitalisation, roadside equipment being connected to road users and the emergence of self-driving vehicles, the role of the road operator will be, and indeed already is, changing. This means that at the same time traffic management is changing. At Intertraffic, visitors can participate in workshops on smart traffic monitoring and integrated traffic management schemes. Yunex, Swarco and Royal HaskoningDHV will present their environmentally oriented traffic management. Vaisala’s targeted road weather and air quality information for smarter traffic management and TRL’s open data and urban traffic control will also feature.

Sustainability challenges

The summit programme also zooms in on sustainability challenges such as meeting climate change goals and resolving city transportation challenges, multiple use of public space and creating multimodal streets. It covers transforming city planning by using 3D modelling technology and community engagement. CGI’s presentation will focus on data sharing in the logistics sector and how this leads to benefits for reducing costs, better accessibility

of locations, attaining sustainability goals and improving road safety. The summit sessions will also inform visitors about C-ITS deployment and making steps towards automated driving, such as lessons learned from ITS Nationals, policy driven adaptive network control from Yunex, in-car traffic management using C-ITS, a first step to autonomous driving from Be-Mobile and societal benefits of a large-scale C-ITS data exchange hub from Monotch. Two large stands needed for numerous Swarco products and solutions

After a four-year break, Swarco Group is keen to welcome visitors to its two stands, which are both in Hall 2 for the first time.

The Road Marking Systems (RMS) world of Swarco will feature the latest retroreflective systems, integrating premium reflective glass beads, Swarco SolidPlus on stand 02.236.

Coateq, the company’s Dutch representative for road markings, will again be on the stand as will, for the first time, colleagues from Hitex International, one of the youngest Swarco RMS family members based in the UK. In addition to addressing how important high quality road markings are for the upcoming age of automated driving, preformed markings, cycle path markings and airport markings are also part of the portfolio that will be on show.

Meanwhile on stand 02.236, Swarco will focus on ITS technologies. The company’s holistic solution competence, condensed in the latest release of its MyCity urban mobility management suite, addresses a whole range of topics including traffic congestion and

Intercomp, a worldwide manufacturer of fixed and portable vehicle weighing and measurement products, will be showcasing some recent innovations: the LTR788 Dual Wheel Load Scale, and the new 2.4” Low Profile Strip Sensor. Intercomp utilises highly accurate strain gauge load sensing technology which is widely accepted as the most accurate and reliable means to weigh a vehicle.

The 2.4” strip sensor offers a costeffective alternative to piezoelectric

sensors for weigh-in-motion (WIM) data-collection with lower ownership costs. A real exhibition highlight at the Tattile stand during Intertraffic 2022 will be the unveiling the final version of the Tattile Axle Counter. The company says the system fills the missing link of automatically providing all relevant vehicle information for a variety of applications, including tolling. According to Tattile, full onboard processing makes any other external devices unnecessary.
