For almost a decade, in preparation for the event, Ashghal, Qatar’s public works authority, has been diligently improving and constructing one of the world’s most advanced intelligent transport networks, providing an efficient, maintainable and safe system of roads and highways.
Since 2014, Ashgal has installed over 600 of MG Squared’s CAT6 Camera Lowering Devices as they strive to apply best practices in intelligent roadway design, technology and management.

Communications specialists Efkon and Strabag Infrastructure & Safety Solutions are sharing a stand at Intertraffic.
Efkon is presenting a DSRC on-board unit which integrates ‘seamlessly and elegantly’ into the vehicle rather than being mounted behind the windshield. For use in free-flow tolling, the firm says the communication electronics is connected to a control unit in the vehicle’s interior via a standardised cable harness.
As well as a display it has a slot for contactless payment cards (NFC). As drivers go through a toll station, the due amount is debited and displayed and an acoustic signal informs the driver.
Meanwhile, Strabag is presenting a new health & safety system, which is already being used by Arge U2 and Strabag, Inc for the extension of the underground railway network in Vienna and Toronto. It covers various applications such as positioning and access control.
In case of accident or fire, the company’s tunnel radio system –currently used in Austria’s Tauern and Plabutsch tunnels and in two tunnels on Israel’s Road 16 - provides constant, interference-free, lifeand-death communication between emergency teams and the external mission control centre.

Eunomia aids policing effort
Eunomia Traffic is a fully automated in-car system that provides significant assistance to the police and improves traffic safety. When installed in police cars, it records all traffic events in 360°-mode and detects speed in motion, providing accurate and instant capability with police databases. Recorded offences are immediately catalogued in a register to facilitate searches both at the scene of the event and at postprocessing.
In addition to searching for data on a specific vehicle, Eunomia Traffic provides simultaneous speed control in front of and behind the patrol car, as well as for vehicles approaching or moving away from the patrol car. The video is synchronised with the data of the built-in speed radars.
All these actions are automatically combined with the detection of the licence plate of the particular vehicle and the acquisition of data about the vehicle.

PRAGUE GOES GREEN
Green Center, a Czech parking solutions provider, recently put its ticketing systems to a di erent use, at the Prague Botanical Gardens. The gardens needed more cashiers to sell entry tickets so Green Center supplied six payment kiosks where visitors can easily purchase the entry tickets without waiting in a long queue in front of a sales booth.
In this case the client has chosen to use their own superior application that contains user GUI, graphical user interface. This application is accessing Green Center’s API - application programming interface - that communicates with individual peripherals installed in the kiosks. The project is to be launched this spring.

Sernis sees through the fog
Fog can reduce drivers’ visibility to nearly nothing. However, if the Sernis SR-SDSFog system, nominated for an Intertraffic Green Globe Award, is activated in foggy situations, it uses LEDs for guidance and also to warn of the presence of another vehicle in front.
Each smart detector beacon has two powerful LED lights that can show amber and red, with brightness control, for guidance. There is also a set of a dedicated radar sensors, and local processing units. Vehicles are detected in real time so drivers can be warned of traffic in front of them, even with limited visibility conditions. All units are connected in a network by RS485 communication protocol, where it is possible to communicate individually with each set of the smart detector beacons to monitor and control several internal parameters.
Smart detector beacons are installed on a post about every 50 metres, on each side of the road, and the system works in four modes. Under normal conditions, all lighting devices remain off.
In guidance mode, when there is low-level fog, the lower amber beacon will light up to mark the road delineation section, indicating to the driver the route of the motorway in safe conditions.
Detection mode is activated
in critical fog. The lower amber beacon lights to provide guidance but when a vehicle passes through a section, the red section of lighting is activated until it passes through the zone.
A vehicle travels on the road, two sections – about 100 metres – of
beacons behind will be lit in red, to warn other drivers of its proximity.

‘Ground-breaking’ is an o enover-used term but in the case of the Braums R2X it really is ground-breaking technology that allows for rapid in-ground inductive loop replacement. As visitors to the Braums stand will learn, the Australiaheadquartered company’s Braums R2X links modern above ground detection solutions and sensors to existing tra ic controllers where previously inground inductive loop detectors were used to detect vehicle presence.
The device negates upgrading the tra ic controller or modifying its controller so ware (personality) in compliant controllers, generally required by other interface solutions and products. The Braums R2X is expandable, providing support
for up to four loop detector cards, managing and replacing up to 64 in-ground inductive loops. It features a full TCPIP stack to enable it to also act as a device server, allowing data routing over WAN, and remote configuration of the tra ic sensors.
Another key feature is that the Braums R2X also features configurable relays, supporting tra ic light phase extension, speed triggering, and other capabilities. Of course, Braums R2X can be used at new tra ic intersections as well, for faster rollout and integration with smartmicro tra ic sensors.
Visitors to the Braums stand will also see the Braums R2X+ which supports replacement of up to 32 detection zones, double the capacity of Braums R2X.

VITA lives by safety commitment
Double down on efforts to improve road safety and environmental protection standards. This is what VITA International, a player specialised in the development, production and distribution of safety barriers and innovative technologies at the service of infrastructures, based in Travagliato (Brescia, Italy), has done consciously and consistently since its origins.
But what concrete results has “doubling the efforts” for VITA? Remaining in the field of guardrails to a real "double life" of the
devices themselves, since in all the products in the range it is possible to apply or remove the wood from the Corten steel structure, without "scratching" in the slightest, for this reason, the safety, durability and design characteristics of the various solutions (all tested in both configurations).
Another textbook example is GuardLED. A highly innovative lighting-protection device for guardrails that from 2020 ensure double safety: active thanks to the lighting and passive thanks to the polyurethane
cladding, plus a double, indeed multiple environmental protection. Abarrier that can slash vehicle pollution in half! It sounds too fantastic to be true. SmogStop is a “smog-eating” highway noise wall technology, aimed at removing tra c pollution from vehicles.
It’s been tested on highways in Toronto and the UK and as visitors to Intertra c can learn, this barrier, an Innovation Award nalist, can reduce overall air pollution, NOx and PM’s by some 50%.
e SmogStop Barrier, presented by Gramm Barrier Systems, features a double-
walled design with an angled ba e to direct tra c emissions between two wall segments where a photocatalytic coating breaks down pollutants. e wall also generates air vortices and enhances vertical mixing of emissions with cleaner air, further decreasing pollution levels.
e Ontario Ministry of Transportation installed a 6.5-metre-high section along Highway 401 in Toronto, and results were monitored for eight months. Emissions from tailpipes, are channelled into the airspace to react with

the coating and converted to nitrogen and oxygen. Cleaner air comes out of a gap at the bottom. It’s a solution that takes roadside air and, either through the action of the air ow or through the coating, substantially reduces pollution beyond the wall.

Even though there are improvements of solvent-based paints, Water-thinnable markings marking materials are increasingly the choice for future marking projects. Modern cold plastic systems have an exceptionally long lifetime and thus ensure permanent tra ic guidance on roadways. They are solvent-free and eliminate the environmental impact of solvent emissions from acetone or toluene.
Kansai Helios’ cold plastic systems in combination with cold spray plastics enable a lifetime of up to 20 years. The original markings are refreshed every two to three years in order to constantly meet all tra ic requirements.

At Intertraffic 2022, Traffic Data Systems is introducing the TDS 824, a brand-new detector/classifier module for eight channels (four lanes with double loops). It has been developed for roadside remote stations and traffic light systems in demanding situations. The TDS 824 will satisfy customer requirements for effectively decoupling external interference, for example from trams and other sources.
The high integration density enables eight channels/four double loop modules on a 19-inch card for rack mounting or in a top hat rail module. The TDS 824 features Traffic Data Systems’ powerful lanechanging recognition software that prevents double-counting and misclassification of vehicles changing lanes.
The eight channels of the TDS 824 module use a continuous measuring process (no time multiplexing) and utilise more than 16 fixed frequencies, which are set and calibrated fully automatically, without DIP switches. The distance between
the TDS 824 and the loops can be greater than 600m using a TLS-compliant lead-in cable with one pair of cores per loop (AWG 20). The resistance of the loop including lead-in cable can be 50Ω, and the inductance of the loop including lead-in cable can be 600µH.
DK15 and NorSIKT classifiers are available for the patternrecognition-based system, optimised for the TLS Type 2 loop. Other loop geometries are available as an option. Broken and short-circuited loops are detected, reported, and documented.

KSK’s Magnetic Sensor is a wireless detector system for parking spaces that are located in the dense urban areas. Each parking space is equipped with the wireless sensor that is mounted directly onto the parking space’s surface.
The sensor, from the Polish company KSK, detects the vehicle based on the continuous measurement of the natural magnetic field of the Earth;
it records field disturbance caused by the vehicle when it enters the parking space.
The information about the occupancy of the parking space is verified by radar sensor and directed by radio to the collecting device - using the LoRa network – via a private or a public IoT network.
The information can be presented to the parking manager on a smartphone’s app or the LED traffic sign display.

HTC is offering its Speedgates product “as a service”, which means that users no longer buy one of the parking gates but simply pay a fixed amount per month during the agreed usage period of 10-15 years. Set against agreed performance and use conditions, HTC takes care of all service and maintenance and the reuse of parts and product. This means customers know exactly what it will cost – and contracts were recently concluded with Schiphol Express and a business park in Heemskerk. When it comes to temporarily securing vehicle access to sites, HTC has also developed solutions for events (Xentry Mobile) and construction (Xentry On Site).
Efaflex opens the door to adaptable parking
Germany-based Efaflex is exhibiting its range of specially designed high-speed doors for industrial sectors including parking and traffic. The doors are designed for the toughest continuous use and to meet high requirements for safety, security while delivering fast operating speeds. The doors on display, the EFA-STT and the EFA-SST PS with EFASmartConnect are adaptable to the most diverse conditions.
Laths constructed of crystal-clear acrylic glass mean that the EFA-SST door leaf is more than 70% transparent for increased natural daylight and provides a clear vision of sight for improved user safety. They are engineered for continual use, and Efaflex says their almost
wear-free nature ensures they will last for years.
The EFA-SST PS is a compact space-saving spiral design that utilises 105mm laths to enable the door to be used in cramped environments or where lintel, or headroom is reduced, which makes them suitable for underground car parks.
Also on show is the EFA-SmartConnect module for intelligently networking door systems. The module enables both the operation and the planning of customer service and maintenance processes in your protected WLAN network.

Ortana Cosmos and Rador traffic sensor launched

The Ortana Cosmos provides a coordinated smart software platform for all ITS units and stakeholders to prevent congestion on a GIS-based platform. The system combines knowledge databases from traffic situations and submits it to operators in a single platform. Ortana says it leads
to environmentally healthy and lower carbon emissions on highways.

LuminoKrom, from France-headquartered Olikrom, is a luminescent road marking paint that glows in the dark for 10 hours. It captures daylight and provides illuminated at night with no electricity consumption or CO2 emissions.
