he construction machinery market appears to be seeing a recovery in demand and sales for the start of 2025. A key indicator was the strong performance for the recent bauma 2025 construction machinery exhibition in Munich, Germany, with healthy exhibitor numbers and attendance figures. The show attracted 3,061 exhibitors from 57 countries while attendee numbers topped 600,000 and the people came from 200 countries, according to the event organisers.

For anyone who has not attended the bauma show in person, it is an incredible sight. Munich’s former airport, in use for aviation until the 1990s, is filled completely with construction machines.

This positive outlook is backed up by recent financial figures from machinery firms Volvo Construction Equipment and the Wacker Neuson Group, as well as Italian contractor the Webuild Group, which are cautiously optimistic.

Volvo CE said that, when adjusted for currency movements, net sales of machines decreased by 10% and service sales increased by 2% for the first quarter of 2025. Compared with the first quarter in 2024, a negative brand, market and product mix was partly offset by increased volumes, lower material costs and an improved service business.

According to the Wacker Neuson Group, the firm’s first quarter results for 2025 are still affected by the weak market demand seen in 2024. However, the company said that an increasing order intake is a positive sign for the full year 2025.

And the Webuild Group says that since the beginning of 2025, the firm has been selected, or is in the process of finalisation, for projects with a combined value of €5 billion in low-risk markets, including Italy, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and North America.

In the US, much of the problematic transport infrastructure issues can be seen with its bridges. According to a report from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), nearly 221,800 bridges in the US need major repairs or replacement. The report was compiled by ARTBA from analysing federal government data and released in the third quarter of 2024. It showed that 42,067 bridges were considered structurally deficient and requiring extensive works or replacement. End

ike the gift that keeps on giving…or so the world’s construction equipment OEMs hope…the impact of bauma will go on for some time. It is no exaggeration to say that for most OEMs, bauma is the single biggest influence on their development programmes.

Myriad new models are launched, many new technologies introduced, and leaders share their thoughts and predictions with the industry. Just six years ago, the leading OEMs were talking about the coming of electrically powered equipment, and by April 2025 many of them were introducing multiple electrically powered machines. And, not just the machines themselves, but a range of technologies designed to make them viable and affordable in the right context.

The context on everyone’s lips is the reduction of carbon emissions, and while the automotive industry allows individuals to express their concerns by driving BEVs, it is the heavier equipment, working extended shifts in a production capacity, where the greatest potential reductions may be achieved. Legislators are responding by mandating electriconly equipment in certain settings, and the industry is rising to meet this challenge, seeing it as a competitive opportunity.

‘We are ready…to meet this need’ was the message from the many leaders we spoke to at bauma, qualified with ‘when the market is also ready’…or words to that effect. Also waiting in the wings is hydrogen power, which some believe will outstrip electricity as the industry’s future first choice for motive power.

Fuelling for both remains a challenge that is fast being met with innovative solutions.

The Global Highways team has spent two months capturing and recording the many launches and announcements at bauma. MAJOR AUSTRALIAN TUNNEL PROJECT Tunnelling work is underway for the North East Link project in Victoria State, Australia

he two massive tunnel boring machines (TBMs), nicknamed Gillian and Zelda, have been restarted for the second portion of their work for the project. The two TBMs both weigh in excess of 4,000tonnes, are 90m long and have boring diameters of 15.6m. Gillian and Zelda completed their first drives in March 2025. Both TBMs bored over 1.9km for their initial drives (around 36% of the total distance they have to complete), with around 7,700 tunnel segments having been installed in each bore.

When complete, each of the twin-tube tunnels will carry three lanes of traffic, measure 6.5km in length and will be at a depth of 45m. The new tunnels will reduce congestion and cut journey times for drivers.

The project is being funded jointly by the Australian Government and Victorian Government, with completion expected in 2028.

Safer highway and bridge construction in the US Highway and bridge construction in the US is getting safer according to a report by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). The data comes from an analysis of US Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

The analysis reveals that between 2011 and 2023 (the most recent years available), fatal injuries in the highway, street, and bridge (HSB) sector declined 15%.

Non-fatal injuries and illness for

the HSB sector also declined, with the number of cases/1,000 workers decreasing 46%.

While the number of deaths among workers is still high – 88 in 2023 alone – Brad Sant (ARTBA Senior Vice President of Safety & Education), believes the downward trend reflects collaboration between public agencies, industry organisations, and transportation design and construction firms to address safety risks and hazards.

VOLVO CE BOOSTING EXCAVATOR PRODUCTION Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is making a global investment in crawler excavator production at three key Volvo CE locations. The investment covers three production sites, in

South Korea, Sweden and North America. The total investment is approximately 2,500 MSEK with the largest share dedicated to the Changwon factory in South Korea.

This strategic approach aims to strengthen Volvo CE's presence and operational efficiency across key regions and markets.

$2.5 billion road investment Opening new traffic lanes in Florida on I-4 from US 27 in Polk County to World Drive in Osceola County will slash journey times for drivers.

The work is needed to boost capacity along I-4, which carries heavy traffic volumes, and connects Orlando and Tampa via Lakeland. The section of road handles 140,000 vehicles/day on average.

The project has been managed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) on a portion of Interstate 4. The lanes are being opened eight months ahead of schedule. The work forms part of a massive project, the Moving I-4 Forward programme under the Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative.

FAYAT completes Mecalac deal

MOROCCO’S HIGHWAY EXTENSION PROGRAMME

Morocco has embarked upon an ambitious highway expansion programme that will help boost connectivity and develop the country’s economy

Government to ADM. This follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the investment programme.

One motorway project to receive funding will be for the route linking Berrechid and Tit Mellil. Another project will be for the Rabat to Casablanca Continental Motorway. In addition, funding will be provided for interchange works at Aïn Harrouda and Sidi Maarouf.

An expressway is planned for the Draa-Tafilalet region, while there are plans for an improved link between Nador West Med port and the cities of Nador, Driouch, and Kassita. Other new highway links will improve transport connections between Fez and Taounate, as well as Tiznit and Dakhla.

Approval has been given for a $600 million toll road project in Louisiana. The toll road forms part of a $2 billion containerport development project in St Bernard Parish, allowing access to and from the facility for heavy vehicles. The new port would be able to handle larger container vessels that are currently unable to travel further upriver due to clearance restrictions from the Crescent City Connection bridge. Called the St Bernard Transportation Corridor, this new toll road would be elevated and link the new terminal in Violet, Louisiana, with I-510.

The busy city of Marrakech in Morocco will benefit from improved transport links

t present, the highway network extends for a total of 2,177km according to data from the Ministry of Equipment and Water.

The National Highway Company (ADM) has a major programme of works underway at present. The area around Casablanca and Rabat is already benefiting from new highway links. Key projects include work for the Tetouan-Chefchaouen expressway via National Road N2, as well as improved transport links between Marrakech and Safi and Marrakech and Kelaa Sraghna.

Funding worth $1.36 billion has been secured in Morocco for key motorway projects. The funding will be provided by the Moroccan

Asia and the Americas.

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY FOR NIGERIA COASTAL HIGHWAY

Construction work is now underway for two key sections of Nigeria’s new coastal highway. The 123km stretch in Ebonyi State is being built using concrete, linking Ndibe Beach with Mbeke Ishieke.

Meanwhile, work is also underway for a 65km stretch of the route running through the north of Akwa Ibom State in South East Nigeria.

The 750km highway connecting Lagos with Calabar will improve transport between the South East and South West of Nigeria.

SOFTWARE INTEGRATION FOR TRIMBLE

Trimble is offering a new integration between its B2W Track and Trimble Siteworks software systems. This will help to automate quantity tracking for earthwork and civil contractors.

A unique field-to-office connection allows contractors to compare material production quantities achieved to planned quantities more easily and accurately.

Continuous assessment of field progress can enable civil contractors to make timely operational adjustments to protect profitability and to bill for accurate payments as work increments are completed.

Trimble says that this will boost working efficiency as civil contractors have to evaluate how well projects are progressing against budgets, timelines and productivity goals. Relying on phone calls, forms, emails and other disconnected communications tools to report on production quantities limits timeliness and accuracy of reporting. The firm says that its new software integration brings automation to the process to increase efficiency, eliminate errors and provide an auditable progress trail for billable milestones.

The new Trimble progress-to-plan reporting workflow allows project managers to create requests for quantity measurements, such as the amount of material added, moved or removed at a site, within the B2W Track performance-tracking

application. Those requests are relayed automatically to personnel in the field who use Siteworks software to fulfill the request at survey-grade accuracy and send the data back to B2W Track via Wi-Fi or cellular connections. B2W Track users can then review and validate the data and reconcile it with information from other sources such as field logs. Production quantity data can also be transferred from B2W Track to the Trimble Viewpoint Vista, Viewpoint Spectrum accounting systems, or to third-party construction accounting systems.

Trimble Siteworks software provides construction surveying, machine guidance and site management capabilities. For production quantity tracking, devices enabled with Siteworks software technology precisely measure distances, angles and elevations on job sites and process the resulting 3D data sets to assess production quantities in terms of linear distances, areas and volumes.

B2W Track is a comprehensive Trimble performance-tracking application for civil construction.

Accurate excavation The sophisticated Trimble Siteworks Machine Guidance Module for tilt-bucket attachments is now available. By integrating the full range of motion of the tilt bucket's cutting edge into the Siteworks machine guidance and layout software, operators can achieve precise grading and levelling, efficient ditch cleaning and shaping, accurate backfilling and complex slope work. This allows for construction of contoured landscapes and effective operation in confined spaces, saving time and preventing costly mistakes.

This system also extends the capabilities of the Trimble Siteworks Software, allowing field operators to move from surveying and layout to onmachine guidance and operator assistance for tilt buckets and tilt couplers.

The Siteworks Machine Guidance system is designed for transitions between tasks. Operators can use the same system for surveying and machine control, moving it effortlessly between machines and jobsites. This is achieved with a simple-toinstall machine kit and the Siteworks Machine Guidance software module, leveraging existing technology.

IRF joins global transport leaders at the ITF 2025 Summit

From 21 to 23 May 2025, more than 1,200 delegates from more than 80 countries gathered in Leipzig for the annual International Transport Forum (ITF) Summit, the world’s foremost platform for high-level discussions on transport policy

s in previous years, the International Road Federation (IRF) took an active part, contributing to critical exchanges on the resilience of global transport systems.

Building on the letter of intent signed with the ITF at the 2024 Summit, IRF acting director general, Gonzalo Alcaraz, met with ITF secretary-general Young Tae Kim on the final day of this year’s Summit to advance the collaboration. Discussions focused on the development of a forthcoming memorandum of understanding, which will

frame joint efforts including capacity-building programmes, technical cooperation, and data-driven initiatives aimed at strengthening road transport systems worldwide.

On Wednesday 21 morning, the IRF co-organised its first side event during the Summit, “Transport System Resilience, Connectivity and Diversification in the Face of Climate Change and Other Global Shocks”, alongside Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Life-Links, Kuehne Climate Center, Oris Materials Intelligence and the Asian

MASSIVE MILLING Wirtgen is now offering a massive milling machine in the shape of its latest W 250 XF model. A sophisticated dual-engine drive system is said to allow a 20% power increase over the machine being replaced.

Power comes from twin 18litre John Deere engines that deliver a total of 900kW. Wirtgen and John Deere worked together to ensure the power and torque delivery meets the needs of the milling process. The engines are said to deliver high torque at low engine speeds, with the improved torque characteristic ensuring low fuel consumption and high productivity, even at maximum milling depth.

The integrated MILL ASSIST machine control system regulates the two engines according to demand, ensuring efficient operation. In automatic mode, the machine optimises performance and costs. It also allows the selection of three different working levels focussing on costs, performance, or quality.

The machine has a choice of three different engine power combination modes that can be selected to meet the

requirements of specific milling tasks.

Only one engine is used when removing concrete or brittle materials. When the task demands the removal of a surface layer and high surface quality, the second engine cuts in and operates in the partload range. In combination mode, both engines operate synchronously and deliver maximum combined power.

The large milling machine impresses with high daily output rates in applications on freeways, federal highways, airports, and other major construction projects.

The milling drum of the W 250 XF can be exchanged for a Multiple Cutting System (MCS) milling drum, allowing complete drum assembly changes of under one hour.

Intelligent excavation with Komatsu Komatsu claims that its new PC220LCi-12 excavator is one of the most intelligent construction machines available on the market. The machine is powered by the all-new, powerful 129kW high torque Komatsu nextgeneration engine, which is paired with the new high-efficiency, electronically controlled hydraulic system. The firm says that this system allows an 18% reduction in average fuel consumption, saving customers around 2.1litres/hour of fuel compared to the previous model. This means lower operating costs and CO2 emissions/tonne of material moved.

The new hydraulic system, combined with large-class hydraulic cylinders, and highcapacity hydraulic pumps, delivers 7% increase in arm and bucket forces, allowing for easier digging and material movement.

In addition, the all-new P+ mode brings an 18% increase in productivity and 20% gain in fuel

efficiency to offer cost savings and improved output. The machine has a larger cab with 30% more legroom, a 50% increase in lower right-hand side visibility, overhead cooling vents and joystick control as standard.

ASE Construction Equipment continues to make a powerful impact when it comes to applying advanced technology and design to its range of construction equipment, products and services. In fact, one of the manufacturer’s latest attentiongrabbing innovations is called just that – Impact.

Unveiled at the recent bauma exhibition, the Impact concept was developed by the CNH Industrial Design team in Turin and Modena, Italy. The machine and its electronic control systems were developed in Turin, Modena and at the Lecce facility in Italy, in collaboration with CNH’s Vehicle and Electronics Department and various technology partners.

The machine is based on the existing CASE eCWL 12EV electric compact wheeled loader technology, currently built at Lecce, with an innovative design that eliminates the traditional cabin. Instead of being operated from the inside, the machine is remotely operated from a dedicated control lounge. This innovative feature not only enhances operational flexibility, it makes it possible to operate in extreme environments and adverse weather conditions.

The Impact concept marks a significant advance in accessibility. Operators with motor impairments can now control the machine without physical limitations, representing an important step toward inclusivity in the industry.

an integrated perception system, using advanced hardware to collect real-time data, improving efficiency and precision during operation. Additionally, the Impact concept is equipped with semi-autonomous functionality, allowing automated digging and dumping operations to improve productivity and to reduce operator effort and fatigue. These features will soon be incorporated in the Click & Dig function that CASE will introduce on wheeled loaders from the Lecce plant.

Alongside its established production facilities, CASE has established a Special Applications Division, within the Sampierana plant in Italy.

Here customers can request individual machine designs and specifications that can be engineered and built to meet their specific job site

requirements.

Examples of this innovative approach within the Sampierana R&D hub include the world’s most compact high-reach demolition excavator the CX135E XRD - and a 2.4-tonne mini excavator with a two-piece articulating main boom, designed specifically for the German market.

The CX135E XRD is equipped with an eXtended Reach demolition boom and arm, delivering a maximum reach of up to 13m. The machine sits on an expandable undercarriage with a transport width of just 2.32m and a working width of up to 2.92m for maximum stability.

This compact excavator can operate with a range of attachments, up to 600kg in weight. It also features an operator’s cab that can be tilted back by up to 300 to provide an improved view of the working area. The demolition rig can also be equipped with an XRD camera and lighting mounted on the arm to give an elevated view of the working area.

KLEVER PMB PLANT FROM MASSENZA

I

talian firm Massenza has carried out an extensive redesign of its PMB plant line-up. The new generation of PMB plants from the firm includes three models, the compact Smart model, the medium-sized Klever and the topof-the-range Super Klever.

The Smart model is designed for customers that need lower quantities of PMBs and want to make a relatively modest investment. Increased output is produced by the medium Klever unit while the Super Klever offers the biggest output as well as a range of intelligent features. The firm says that its three-model range meets the demands of all road contractors and most resellers and/or oil companies.

An array of improvements and modifications has been carried out, boosting performance over the previous models. A key feature is that the mixers now have a circular section, reducing the risk of bitumen/polymer residues on the mixer walls and increasing polymer dispersion. The mixers

have an automatic heating system that provides better temperature control, preventing overheating and saving energy. High shear mills are placed in the central part of the plant, allowing a more compact design and easier maintenance.

In addition, the Klever model

can also be upgraded to a Super without any modification to the plant’s skid once the plant is already at site. A bigger motor is fitted for the mill feed pump which boosts performance and means that there is more power for production of materials with high polymer percentages.

The new control room is equipped with thermal and acoustic insulation as well as a heat pump for heating/cooling,

which provides more comfort for the plant operator. The plants also have reduced dimensions, allowing them to be shipped in a standard container.

All plants can be equipped with a number of options, such as polymer big-bag emptying systems, various liquid-additives dosing and loading systems and a solid-additive, micro-batch screw feeder.

The first plants of this new generation have already been supplied and commissioned in Saudi Arabia and Romania. Other units are under construction for clients located in the Middle East, Europe and South America.

A TUNNELLING WOMBAT The CIFA “fauna” welcomes a new member: the Wombat, a revolutionary shotcrete pump, simplifies tunnel-wall consolidation work – spraying concrete onto the wall surface. The process is known as spritz beton, which involves projecting concrete at high pressure onto tunnel walls.

The Wombat ‘spritz’ model joins CIFA’s animal-inspired fleet, alongside products such as the Mamba, Rhino and Dingo. Electric decade for Bonfiglioli Having developed its first electric drives more than 10 years ago for industrial applications, Bonfiglioli is now adapting the technology to manufacture electric drives for road construction equipment.

The manufacturer has developed a range of electric motors for mobile equipment, including pavers and rollers, which it calls the BPM series. The permanent magnet synchronous motors it deploys are the most efficient on the market, explains Massimo Palomba, Bonfiglioli’s e-mobility sales and business development manager for mobility and wind industries. They have an efficiency of up to 98%, compared to between 40% to 60% for hydraulic motors.

“Electrification is not only about getting away from fossil fuel, it is about reaching for better efficiency,” says Palomba. “Because an electric powertrain is more efficient than a hydraulic one, it consumes less resources.”

In a bid to fight off competition

from lower cost suppliers based in China and Japan, Bonfiglioli is looking to become a solutions supplier – rather than a component supplier. To that end, it acquired electronics manufacturer Selcom so that it can now provide elements such as PCB boards and power converters in-house.

“By making the right combination of components, we are raising a technological barrier against our competitors,” says Palomba. “If we only supply mechanical components, they can be changed. If we are supplying a whole system, it becomes more difficult to replace things.”

At the recent bauma exhibition in Munich, Bonfiglioli set out its wares, showing how its electric drives are at the heart of many sectors. In earthmoving, the main target is for excavators, both mini and midi, for which a special kit has been developed, combining three different components. An electric swing drive of the 700TE Series is ultra-compact and

TRIPLE SHOWING FOR CAMS CAMS, the Italian company specialising in fixed and mobile systems for crushing, screening and shredding, showcased at the recent bauma 2025 the brand-new Centauro 75.25 - the smallest model in the Centauro range.

Just like its larger siblings, the Centauro 75.25 is versatile and environmentally friendly.

It integrates a shredder, screen and magnetic separator in a single mobile unit designed for on-site operation. It can process challenging or wet materials, is remotely operated via radio control and can be powered by either a hybrid (diesel/electric) or fully electric system.

This specific model features an FPT F36 Stage V diesel engine (105kW) and a MeccAlte alternator (165kVA). As with the rest of the Centauro range, it is compatible with renewable-energy sources, including solar power. It also sports its own distinctive logo,

designed by street artist and illustrator burla22. This original artwork expresses the machine’s personality, moving away from standard industrial design to embrace a new style of product communication.

But burla22’s vision extends beyond the equipment itself; it illustrates CAMS’ philosophy, embodied by “The Future is Green”.

His dreamlike artwork imagines a world where inert-waste recycling is widespread, raw materials are used more sustainably and nature is reclaimed.

Also exhibited was the Centauro XL 150.69 APR, displayed in a custom livery for a Belgian client. The ‘APR’ stands for Asphalt Pavement

Recycler – a reference to its ability to recover 100% of asphalt (milled material and slabs) while preserving the original bitumen content.

Compared to the standard Centauro designed for non-asphalt materials, the APR version features a secondary shredder operating at low speed to disaggregate the material without altering the particle-size distribution. This enables optimal separation of bitumen from aggregates and results in a cleaner, more classifiable end product.

High-speed shredders, on the other hand, generate excess filler that can clog filters and reduce material quality.

The art of Simex Simex has released the new GEN II version of its ART 1000 patented technology for in-situ regeneration of deteriorated asphalt.

Simex ART technology focuses on surface improvements to address road deterioration. It uses existing materials and does not require the removal of milled material or the addition of virgin

bituminous mix. It avoids the interruption of vehicular traffic, ensuring the road is passable immediately after restoration.

During milling, the equipment uses an eco-friendly chemical rejuvenator to cold-recycle the bituminous aggregate produced.

Specifically, ART consists of two drums; the first for milling and

mixing and the second for crushing and disintegration.

While working, the ART 1000 mills the deteriorated road section and injects measured quantities of rejuvenators to match working depth and carrier speed.

It reduces the milled material to the correct grain size and then mixes the materials, leaving the

recycled bituminous mix ready for compaction.

After regeneration, the bituminous mix is deposited into the milled track and is ready to be levelled and compacted with a roller or vibrating plate. Simex says that, as in the case of repairs after the installation of fibre optics, the presence of cement mortars in limited proportions, compared to the total volume of milled asphalt, does not compromise the success of the final restoration.

The Italy-based company adds that, in addition to the logistical advantages on-site and in terms of traffic flow, the ART 1000 technology offers other key benefits. These include reduction of costs associated with the purchase and transport of new raw materials, utilising exclusively the bituminous mix available on-site, the recovery and regeneration of 100% of the on-site material and fast and durable surface restoration.

The pluses for using Marini’s Evodryer The new Marini Evodryer Plus plant is said to offer customers a sophisticated plant capable of handling high percentages of up to 70% RAP in the feed, while featuring just one drum.

This slots into the range between the more complex and costly parallel drum plants able to handle up to 80% RAP in the feed, and the simpler existing units with just one drum that can handle up to 60% RAP in the feed.

The key to the plant is the way the hot-gas generator is integrated into the single drum. “It’s a completely different concept,” said a company spokesperson.

The firm says that this advanced asphalt-production system allows up to 70% RAP usage but without compromising on product quality. The plant suits medium-large production volumes with high RAP content but with just one drum, is less costly to buy, has lower fuel costs and is simpler to maintain than sophisticated parallel drum plants.

The first installations of EvoDryer Plus on new Marini systems will take place in 2025.

Once again, Marini has earned the trust of its clients with its latest technological innovations.

In fact, in recent months, several well-established companies have chosen to implement this technology in their plants ahead of

the official launch, also prompted by the brand’s established authority and solid technological reputation.

From Kohler to Rehlko Eric Fontaine joined Rehlko as president of its engines division in January 2025, not long after the business was rebranded from Kohler.

Fontaine came to Rehlko from electric-motor and power-transmission-component manufacturer Regal Rexnord where he was vice president of the industrial components division.

Global investment company Platinum Equity became the major shareholder of Kohler Energy in May 2024, with the Kohler Company remaining as a minority shareholder while retaining the Kohler name. The rebranding to Rehlko - which is an anagram of Kohler - was announced in September 2024.

At Rehlko, Fontaine was impressed with the company spirit of innovation and its products, together with the high quality of the engines.

“For our products, within the package we provide, we really are best-in-class, especially around torque and power density,” he says, paying tribute to the talent and enthusiasm of the Rehlko engine team.

One such best-in-class product is Rehlko’s

new high-power version of the KDI 1903TCR engine. It packs a big punch in a compact package, delivering 50kW of power and 250Nm of torque with three cylinders. The KDI range includes three-cylinder 1.9litre engines which deliver a power output of 42kW and 225Nm torque and four-cylinder 2.5litre engines which deliver 56kW and 315Nm torque. The high-power version of the KDI 1903TCR sits between the two.

The new version engine would be suited to a wide range of construction equipment such as small excavators, skid steers, telehandlers or

pumps. The high power and torque densities mean that the machine can do more work within the same time window and with more efficient fuel consumption. The high-power KDI 1903TCR incorporates Rehlko’s diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology, engineered to meet EU Stage V emission regulations. The DPF enables efficient, automatic regeneration, even at low rpm, says Rehlko. The engine can also run on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), if required, to reduce emissions and its carbon footprint in operation.

Urban hydromilling for Soilmec In the world of urban drilling equipment the new Soilmec SC-110 Urban is designed to meet the increasingly complex demands of metropolitan job sites.

This hydromill combines high performance, compact design and cutting-edge technology, setting a new benchmark in the sector.

While hydromills are traditionally large and complex machines, the SC-110 Urban was engineered to operate efficiently in tight, densely populated environments. AD is being set up in the Tostmannplatz area of the city of Braunschweig (Brunswick) in the northwest state of Lower Saxony and will run until the end of September. It is branded as the world’s first research project for the “Holistic Remote Control of Vehicles Using Intelligent Infrastructure”.

The project is the first of its kind where the complete control of vehicles by road technology is to be tested.

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of infrastructure-supported automated driving in urban areas. But instead of integrating automation functions in the vehicle, these are outsourced to the infrastructure, to edge and cloud systems. By continuously detecting all objects - on the road or in intersections - using infrastructurebased sensors, automated vehicles can be remotely controlled by appropriately equipped operating areas.

This not only increases the economic efficiency of autonomous driving, but above all the safety of all road users, as critical traffic situations can be detected at an early stage.

At the beginning of April, Vitronic and DLR jointly installed two sensor columns at Tostmannplatz to analyse traffic. The focus is on high-performance detection systems based on a stereo camera, radar and LiDAR technology. These systems use AI to detect and classify road users and obstacles in real time with high precision. This enables a comprehensive traffic image which is the basis for safe, connected driving. Personal data is not recorded or stored.

The recorded sensor data flows into a central data hub, where it is processed in real time. By continuously recording all objects in the intersection area, automated vehicles will be guided safely across the intersection during the test phase at Tostmannplatz.

projects at Vitronic’s Machine Vision Group. “For example, concealed road users are detected reliably and at an early stage, before they even enter the field of vision or sensor range of a vehicle. This makes it possible to anticipate and avoid potential hazards”.

Vitronic also noted that the MAD Urban research project is the first showing of the company’s new generation of columns with stereo optical sensor technology, which will be officially launched by the end of the year or early next year. The robust, weatherproof and urban space-friendly housing can be used flexibly thanks to its modular construction.

The choice of materials, production and energy consumption have all been sustainably optimized - in line with the principles of green engineering.

Other partners include GFT, a digital technology transformation company, Matrix Vision, since 2017 part of Balluff Group, a German company based near Stuttgart which focuses on camera-based sensing and machine vision along with images sensing, FZI Research Center for Information Technology, based in Karlsruhe, and Intel.

Last December, the government published its strategy for autonomous driving that is intended to pave the way for self-driving cars in everyday traffic. The goal is to make Germany one of the world’s leading hubs for innovation and production in the autonomous driving sector, Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, said at the time. “With this strategy, we are creating a suitable innovation-friendly framework – a framework that has to be fleshed out by business and industry. oadside safety devices - crash cushions, guardrails, signs - minimise harm, but their effectiveness depends upon knowing when they have been compromised. To this end, advanced impact detection and alert systems are transforming roadside safety. Consistent data flow supports faster decisionmaking, predictive maintenance, and ultimately, safer roads for both drivers and workers.

Today’s advanced alerting systems provide realtime notifications of impacts, allowing road crews and emergency medical services to respond swiftly. Rapid response significantly reduces the risks of secondary accidents where vehicles collide with already impacted devices.

Additionally, these alert systems provide information around crash location, helping response teams prepare with the impact site’s specific needs. From traffic control measures, repair parts and personnel needs, this information enables response teams to be more proactive, rather than reactive once they arrive at the scene.

Temporary work zones present an even greater logistical complexity due to their dynamic nature, frequent repositioning of safety devices and the number of assets involved. Advanced tracking tools directly address these challenges by providing precise GPS locations, product identification and impact history data for each safety asset.

Federal US regulations require DoTs to maintain detailed roadway asset databases, especially for critical safety features such as crash cushions and guardrail end treatments. These databases are essential for not only day-to-day maintenance but for staying compliant when national safety standards change.

When crash testing criteria are updated, agencies must know exactly where outdated devices are located, in order to prioritise replacements. Real-time data makes that process both faster and more accurate.

Additionally, with better tracking capabilities, asset management becomes seamless, fostering compliance with federal standards and greatly improving the efficacy of asset maintenance and replacement cycles.

roadside safety systems is their ability to detect impacts instantly. Recently, in the US state of California, a crew from the California Department of Transportation received an impact alert which allowed it to reach the crash scene within minutes and rescue a family trapped inside a burning vehicle.

Meanwhile, with real-time data concerning the physical condition of barriers, road crews can proactively manage maintenance schedules, anticipate necessary traffic control measures during repairs and reduce exposure to hazardous working conditions.

This data-driven approach facilitates better resource allocation, reduces inspection times and ultimately

lowers the overall cost of roadway maintenance.

Additionally, data collected from these systems enables more precise safety analysis, supporting evidence-based decisions for road infrastructure upgrades. Also, when regulatory changes require hardware updates, transportation agencies can easily identify and prioritise outdated equipment, ensuring continuous compliance with evolving safety standards.

Another long-term benefit lies in the ability to minimise redundant site inspections. If systems can confirm a crash cushion has not been impacted, for instance, a crew can skip that location, conserving labour and vehicle hours. End

England’s National Highways agency is using variable message signs (VMS) to display non-regulatory messages to indicate that maintenance teams may be out of sight The is the first time that such messages have been displayed in an effort to better communicate to drivers that there are obstacles, diversions and road works ahead. The system from SRL Traffic Systems is displaying wording not usually used, including ‘Working even out of view’, to provide an awareness of operations ought of sight. Last October, under an initiative of SRL Traffic Systems and road maintenance provider Kier, and in collaboration with National Highways, the signs were installed in a contraflow section of the A417 Missing Link project. It was done as part of National Highways’ Electronic Boards for Roadworks review and resulting guidelines.

The implementation of the review’s recommendations represents a significant advancement in how project teams communicate with road users during construction activities on England’s Strategic Road Network. The agency said that the aim of guidelines is to provide project teams with best practice for effective use, monitoring and updating of electronic boards. Unlike traditional, portable variable message signs, electronic boards are designed to offer a more userfriendly approach to information dissemination during roadworks.

Industry research has shown that messages which can be read within four seconds are better for road users. Previously, signs presented yellow text on a black background. The new signs display concise, friendly messages in white text over a black background.

SRL said that National Highways can now display messages using more options, such as text colour and border additions.

The agency will be able to use the signs more as electronic billboards than traditional variable message signs, explained Nick Nandhra, project manager for National Highways. “These new signs mark a significant advancement in our goal to enhance road user experiences,” said Nandhra. “Clear communication during roadworks is crucial.”

Kier and SRL Traffic Systems are collaborating to maintain signage and provide real-time updates.

Caroline Weller, variable message sign manager at SRL Traffic Systems, said the sign on the A417 Missing Link project is the first scheme to be completed using the agency’s new guidelines.

ELECTRIC PAVING REALITY

Electric asphalt paving machines are becoming a reality – Mike Woof writes

C

onstruction equipment manufacturers are now offering customers electric asphalt pavers, in addition to new diesel models.

Although hedging their bets with the availability of improved diesel units, the firms are looking to the future when the use of diesel engines in urban areas will be more strictly controlled and regulated, particularly in Europe. Using electric asphalt pavers will require contractors to change their paving practices to some degree, ensuring recharging options are available. For some projects such as tunnelling work, electric power will likely be available onsite, which will ease recharging. Portable power systems are already becoming available for use with electric earthmoving equipment and will likely prove equally valuable for use by paving crews.

It is worth noting that the asphalt paving sector is changing to meet stricter requirements and the increasing use of warm asphalt will require contractors to be more efficient in terms of the supply of materials to sites. These same improvements in logistics and scheduling could also incorporate the recharging of electric asphalt pavers (and rollers), ensuring more continuous operation with fewer stoppages.

Several key manufacturers in Europe (as well as the US) are now introducing electric asphalt pavers.

While these are more costly than conventional diesel units, they do offer benefits in terms of reduced Global Highways Magazine for industry-related discussion

exhaust and noise emissions, not to mention lower maintenance needs. Electricity costs do vary from country to country but recharging an electric paver is also likely to be cheaper than refuelling a comparable machine in many countries around the world.

From Ammann comes a new range of pavers, with the all-electric eABG4820 model having now been trialled onsite in various operations around Europe. Moving up in size is the ABG5420 paver, which features several performance upgrades while retaining the firm’s sought-after screed concept.

The new Ammann electric paver shares features with its diesel sibling, the ABG 4820, a highway class machine which offers screed widths of up to 6.5m. Both models have the same screed and user interface, the Electric Pavement Management 3 (EPM3), as well as control panels at either side of the screed.

One key difference is that the electric machine is 1tonne heavier, while it has electric motors instead of the diesel and a high-capacity battery instead of a fuel tank. The hydraulics and software have also been adjusted to operate more efficiently with the electric drive, while the machine has specially developed software to further optimise operation. The electric components, however, are all proven units from Volvo Penta, which are being supplied to Ammann as part of an agreement between the two firms.

Dynapac is also offering a new range of asphalt pavers, with its novel SD 25 80C e electric model taking centre stage. According to Dynapac, the electric paver is more energy-efficient than conventional diesel machines, as well as being up to 20% quieter in operation. A novel feature of the machine is that it has an electric auger and an electric conveyor, which are said to be 27% more efficient and 40% more efficient respectively than conventional hydraulic drives.

The SD25 80C e paver is the first of a new generation of electric asphalt pavers from Dynapac, while the firm’s new diesel models have similar paving specifications.

Power for the SD25 80C e comes from a 294kWh battery, while the machine is equipped with proven technology, such as its five electric motors, that has already been used on the firm’s wheeled SD1800W e City Paver. Dynapac says that the new SD25 80C e model can pave for up to 8 hours, while the machine is compatible with available fast charging systems.

Screed heating can be carried out while the machine is connected to the grid so that the battery can be used solely for machine operation.

From Vögele comes a new electric compact paver, the SUPER 1300-5e, which joins the battery-powered MINI 500e and the MINI 502e pavers, introduced previously.

The new SUPER 1300-5e features a similar batteryelectric drive and electric screed as the two smaller models, all of which have zero-exhaust emissions and lower working noise than conventional diesel machines.

The SUPER 1300-5e also shares features with the firm’s other -5 models and is said to offer a similar paving performance to the conventional diesel SUPER 1300-5 model, such as the AB 340 screed offering paving widths from 1.8-4.2m. Power for the SUPER 1300-5e is supplied by the liquid-cooled Li ion battery from Kreisel Electric, which is also part of the John Deere Group. The battery offers a rating of 126 kWh and is a 400V unit, allowing sufficient power to operate the machine for a full working shift.

The electric machine has the advanced automated functions and shorter set-up times also seen in other -5 machines from the firm, compared to the earlier -3 models. Advanced systems for the new -5 Series include the ErgoPlus 5 operating concept, new assistance and automatic control systems and a new lighting system.

Meanwhile, the MINI 500e and MINI 502e batteryelectric Mini Class pavers have been revised and are now offered with a choice of two different battery options. The standard option has a storage capacity of 15kWh and delivers sufficient power for a full working day. For longer operating times, Vögele offers an alternative, 22kWh battery option that can operate the machines for up to two days without recharging. Both battery options work in the low voltage range with 48V. In combination with the electrically heated AB 135 Extending Screed, the mini pavers offer pave widths from 0.25-1.8m. These three compact pavers can be charged quickly and easily according to the firm. The mini pavers can be connected to a household socket or a wallbox.

Using a charging capacity of 22kW, charging for the SUPER 1300-5e takes around five hours, while connecting to a rapid charging station can shorten this to just one hour. The compact pavers feature the same battery and drive technologies as other compact e-machines from the Wirtgen Group. A swivel system is fitted at the end of the U-shaped production line

AMMANN’S NEWLY ACQUIRED ABG BUSINESS When Ammann announced its plan to buy the ABG asphalt paving business from Volvo CE in late 2024, this was a major addition to its operations. The ABG brand has had an excellent reputation in construction for many years as a leading name in asphalt paving.

During the 17 years that Volvo CE owned the ABG facility the firm had invested in the production facility in Hameln, installing new welding robots as well as building a new manufacturing hall for the pavers, for example.

Perhaps the most significant project in recent times was Volvo CE’s development of an electric highway class paver. This machine fitted in well with Volvo CE’s drive towards electric construction machines but has been equally well received as part of Ammann’s own sustainability goals. With several trials of the electric paver having been carried out on working construction sites, Ammann is convinced that the machine will offer customers an effective solution for asphalt paving.

The new electric paver retains many features of the ABG designs that have been well-proven over many years. As with other new-generation pavers from Ammann, the electric machine also benefits from new features. One of the most notable is a variable-stroke, double-tamper system.

The standard setting for tamper bar movement is 6mm from the factory,

although a full 10mm is available on the earlier designs when manually adjusted. But the complexity and time-consuming nature of changing the tamper bar stroke on the existing screeds means that the vast majority of customers never adjust this feature.

However, the new screed design means that customers can now adjust the tamper bar stroke easily, just by changing a setting on a touchscreen. This is a key feature.

For paving tight corners for example, the paving crew can adjust the tamper bars to deliver increased stroke on the outside of the radius so as to match the compaction on the inside of the radius. This will ensure a more even level of compaction across the mat, so that density levels will be more homogenous throughout, with a significant benefit for the wearing life of the corner or roundabout.

This system is enabled through the use of a specially-developed planetary gearbox that means the stroke can be adjusted steplessly when needed.

Meanwhile, the adjustable tamper stroke will also have a major advantage for paving warm-mix asphalt grades. This will ensure more effective compaction with the screed prior to the rollers being deployed. It will assist the time-critical compaction process with warm-mix type asphalt and as the use of this material will become a requirement in many areas (from 2026 in Germany for example), the ability to ensure effective precompaction use means a tamper bar screed

will be a major selling point to the paver customer base. Another use for the variable tamper bar stroke would be for varying material thicknesses also.

Frank Dörrie at Ammann’s ABG facility commented, “They don’t use it at this time because it’s difficult and takes time but today we are making this possible with this adjustment system.”

Dörrie added, “We are convinced customers will use this a lot in future.”

Another novel design feature now being offered by Ammann’s ABG pavers is the ability to raise and lower the screed ends quickly and easily. This system allows the paver crew to vary the crown adjustment on the move, as well as raising just one side of the screed as required, should the machine pass a side road or inspection cover in the roadway. The selection of a hardened steel grade for the tamper bars will boost wear life, particularly for paving more abrasive materials. Dörrie commented, “We’ve doubled tamper bar life because of the use of hardened steel.”

This is a key issue also for some of the pavers being built for use in the US. These machines are often supplied without heating systems but featuring tamper bars for use in RCC applications. The firm was supplying an 8820 model, the largest in the range, featuring a 12m fixed screed to a customer in the US for use in RCC paving. The aggressive nature of the concrete means that machine GLOBAL HIGHWAYS 2025 VOL. 3

wear rates are higher than for paving asphalt, so boosting the tamper bar life with the use of hardened steel will make a significant cost saving for maintenance in this specific application.

A pressurised greasing system for the screed auger drive, as well as multiple seals, ensures that no bitumen contaminants can enter into the bearing, which would reduce its wear life. And a new short Super Ski system featuring five sonic sensors is offered that allows customers to track mat thickness accurately. This is more compact than previous systems as well as offering a higher level of measurement accuracy according to the firm.

Efficient production The pavers are assembled on a U-shaped line that produces all of the pavers in the range.

Turntables at the end of each line allow the machines to progress further, while there is also a siding so that any machines awaiting specialised parts for example can be put to one side until they arrive, allowing other machines to continue progressing along the line.

The personnel on the production line have been trained to be able to switch roles as required. Meanwhile, operations are also digitalised to ensure all assembly

processes are recorded. Sub-assemblies are put together at the side and then moved into place when required. At the end of the production line, all of the machines are given a three-hour warm test to ensure that every function operates correctly, prior to shipment.

Around 80% of the pavers built are tracked machines but the firm also offers wheeled models. These are favoured by many customers in markets such as the UK and Italy, as well as for use in mountain areas where roads often have tight turns, suiting the use of wheeled machines.

The tractor chassis is supplied by a neighbouring firm in Hameln but a significantly high percentage of the other components (apart from the engines and tracks) are made in-house. According to ABG, this is a key difference from other paver manufacturers which rely on suppliers for key parts. The firm says this ensures high quality.

From order to delivery takes around eight weeks usually, although this can be reduced to six weeks if parts have been pre-ordered.

The huge facility covers a large area in the town and currently employs around 350, although in previous times the workforce was as high as 2,000 at the site. End www.ammann.com

compaction, which helps extend road life. An integrated material consumption display and material calculator provides material usage data to the team, reducing the risk of too much or too little asphalt mix arriving onsite, while cutting material costs.

EFFICIENT GRADING A highlight of bauma 2025 in Munich was the introduction of several new graders – Mike Woof writes

I

n the earthmoving machinery market, crawler excavators dominate the sector with the largest overall sales of any type of machine around the world. Wheeled loaders, bulldozers, single drum rollers and articulated dumptrucks also account for much of the sales.

The grader is often overlooked in the earthmoving machinery segment, a precision machine that is sold in smaller numbers, yet plays a key role in many operations for its fine finishing work. Of note at the recent bauma 2025 exhibition in Munich, Germany, was the introduction of several new and innovative grader designs, bristling with the latest connected construction technology. This last is a highly important point as the motor grader is one of the hardest of all construction machines to operate properly. And with a shortage of labour for driving all construction machine types, fitting sophisticated 3D technology to graders (whether from Leica Geosystems, Topcon or Trimble) has become essential in recent years, allowing inexperienced operators to deliver a quality finish.

Aimed initially at developing markets, the three Bell graders being introduced are Tier 3-compliant and available in either a 4WD or 6WD configuration, Global Highways Magazine for industry-related discussion

although Tier 4 Final/Stage V-compliant versions will be offered in due course.

The G140 is the base model and is suited to maintenance and light-medium construction tasks.

The G160 has more power and performance, suiting it to heavy construction applications, while the G200 is designed for bulk earthworks.

The firm designed all three models to be available with six-wheel drive, reasoning that this would provide better controllability and durability. All three models feature Cummins diesels and ZF transmissions.

The G140 uses a 6.7litre capacity engine that drives through a ZF ERGOPOWER transmission. The larger G160 and G200 models are both powered by 9litre engines driving through ZF cPOWER transmissions.

Maintenance needs are said to be low and the engines do not require EGR systems to meet emissions requirements for developing markets, while they can run on either HVO or B20 biodiesel.

According to CASE Construction Equipment, its new D series graders retain the operator comfort and high productivity of the previous C series but benefit from upgrades with improved operator controls and systems.

The 836D and 856D are equipped with new touchscreen displays, providing all key machine and maintenance information as well as a monitor for the rear-view camera. This screen is mounted on top of the redesigned front console. A second console to the right-hand side of the cab features the ignition key, the new electronic hand throttle and USB charging ports.

The new graders come with both electro-hydraulic joystick controls or mechanical levers, giving the driver a choice, depending on preference. The electrohydraulic system uses highly precise, three-axis joysticks that are built into multi-adjustable armrests.

The joysticks have multiple roller switches and buttons to control various machine functions.

The joysticks also provide accurate control of all moldboard operation, comfort steering options and TwinLift control, which allows the operator to control both lift cylinders from a single joystick.

The Stage V-compliant FPT diesel features Hi-eSCR2 emissions technology, delivering a dual-power curve, with automatic switching as higher transmission ratios are reached and ensuring maximum power is available as travel speed increases, optimising productivity.

Caterpillar says that its 140 AWD Next Generation Motor Grader prototype benefits from a range of new technologies that boost productivity and finish quality. Weighing in at 20tonnes, the 140 AWD model

combines two existing platforms into a common nextgeneration platform for graders. Caterpillar claims that its new grader design will provide customers with a wider array of operating features, technologies and configurations.

The cab design offers high comfort and all-round visibility, making working easier and safer, while the machine has ergonomic controls to minimise operator fatigue. Of key importance are the sophisticated technology packages which help to optimise productivity and finish quality, as well as ease of use.

The AWD system and driveline technology meanwhile ensure high tractive effort in all underfoot conditions, as well as fuel savings and low emissions from the latest generation engine.

Hidromek has updated its grader offering with the HMK 600 MG model, which is aimed at sales in developing markets. This retains the reliability and durability of earlier models but now offers increased precision and performance according to the firm.

Productivity is claimed for all applications, with the machine featuring an eight-speed transmission, in both forward and reverse. The machine can be steered by either the steering wheel or by tilting the joystick to left or right. Speed can also be controlled from the joysticks, which are also used to guide blade position, height and angle. Automatic gear selection and a cruise control system are also said to make operation easier.

Power comes from a Tier 3-compliant Mercedes engine, with a variable power feature delivering 139160kW. The variable power feature allows for higher efficiency and lower fuel consumption. The hydrostatic cooling fan, which operates at variable speeds depending on engine temperature, also reverses automatically to clean the cooling system and increase cooling efficiency.

Hydraulic pressure can be adjusted due to a closed-loop, central electro-hydraulic valve fed by a variable flow-rate piston pump. The load-sensing feature provides hydraulic flow according to operation, reducing heat and power losses and boosting overall efficiency.

The new hexagonal cab provides a wide viewing angle, while the display allows the operator to monitor machine data or the work schedule when driving the

machine. The screen also provides a rear view for reversing safely.

The standard blade length is 3.7m although 4m and 4.3m lengths are available. A sophisticated clutch system means that sudden impacts encountered by the blade are absorbed, preventing blade damage. The HMK 600 MG also features two blade accumulators that absorb sudden vertical shocks to the blade.

Arguably the most innovative of the graders unveiled at bauma however came from LiuGong, in the shape of its 4280DE model. This 24tonne machine features electric drive, with an LFP battery rated at 423kWh and a motor delivering a peak power of 160kW. Nominal voltage is 618V while system voltage is 24V DC. Charging can be achieved using a supply of 120-300kW and with a 300kW supply, charging time is around 80 minutes.

An intelligent temperature control ensures that battery temperature is optimised, allowing the machine to operate in ambient temperatures from -30C up to 85C and altitudes up to 5,000m.

The machine has a 4.3m wide blade delivering a maximum blade pull of 123kN. Minimum turning radius is 7.5m, while maximum forward speed is 40km/h and maximum reversing speed is 28km/h. End www.bellequipment.com www.casece.com www.cat.com www.hidromek.com.tr www.liugong.com

BITUMEN TECHNOLOGY: MOVING FORWARD In this issue a new graphene-enhanced additive is showcased as well as accurate carbon counting and a more efficient way to store speciality bitumen - Kristina Smith reports

A

new graphene-enhanced polymer has been used on a public road for the first time ever in Redcar in the Northeast of England. Working with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Tarmac used a mix containing Universal Matter’s Genable additive to resurface an entrance road to a park, a job which required over 150tonnes of asphalt.

Previously it had only been laid in private car parks in North America and at a test facility.

“It's exciting for us because it's leading to quite a significant amount of interest, not just in the UK but also in North America - we are headquartered in Canada - and in other territories,” said Andy Gent, commercial director at Universal Matter GBR. “Credit to Tarmac for listening to us and for taking the time to run it through all their processes.”

Adding small amounts of graphene to asphalt has been shown to enhance its performance and durability. Early data from six months of testing at the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) in Auburn, Alabama, shows that asphalt with the Genable additive outperforms mixes containing other polymer modifiers such as Styrene-ButadieneStyrene (SBS) on rutting. Once the two-year test cycle at NCAT is complete, there will be data related to comparative performance on cracking and fatigue too.

Universal Matter, which is headquartered in Burlington, Ontario, with bases in Houston, Texas and Redcar, produces graphene itself which it then uses to enhance additives for various industries.

Its patented graphene production technology – the Flash Joule Heating process – means that it can produce Genable at a price that can compete with SBS additives Gent said: “One of the advantages we have got

over the rest of the graphene world is that our graphene is not very expensive. Our Flash graphene process makes it cost-effective to produce in large quantities. We can produce hundreds and hundreds of kilogrammes of graphene every day.”

Although graphene is billed as a single wonder material, it comes in many different forms and qualities. Being able to scale up the type of graphene needed for pavement additives is important if graphene is to be used widely in highways around the world, bringing economies of scale.

Genable is supplied in pellets which are added to the asphalt plant during mixing, requiring no modifications to the equipment. “You add it in with the aggregate, it melts in, and the graphene helps to encapsulate the aggregate in the polymer, aiding the binding process,” explained Gent. “We got very positive feedback from the Tarmac plant in Coxhoe in Durham about how easy it was to use.” Typically, around 3% by volume of the bitumen of Genable is needed in a mix. Although the Redcar trial used only virgin aggregate, rather than a mix containing some recycled asphalt planings (RAP), Gent said that early trials indicate that Genable could enhance the performance of mixes containing RAP. Laboratory testing has also shown that mixes containing the additive could be successfully recycled themselves at end of life.

With both Tarmac and Universal Matters performing a series of tests on the Redcar trial project, next steps for Genable will be more trials, hopefully on roads that are more heavily trafficked than this initial one. A second trial in Redcar is under discussion, as well as several more in other parts of the world, says Gent. Associated Asphalt counts carbon from surface treatments Asphalt Group has become the latest company to adopt the Asphalt-IQ system which allows accurate on-the-spot tracking of carbon emissions. The UK road surface treatment specialist is already using it to measure and record carbon emissions associated with surface-dressing contracts in Ceredigion, East Riding of Yorkshire and Pembrokeshire.

“It is important that we take steps as a company to decarbonise our own operations and in turn help others to do so,” said Stephen Cooke, managing director of Asphalt Group, which achieved PAS 2080 verification earlier this year. “A big part of this is being able to track carbon-emissions data – so it is great that we use a system which makes it simple and effective for us to be able to do so.”

Asphalt-IQ deploys an app, configured to the client, which captures daily information such as materials and equipment used and distances travelled by materials and workers, calculating actual carbon emissions, rather than generic ones. The app allows the shift manager to easily input the limited information needed to generate the carbon count at the end of a shift or stretch of road.

Time-saving storage solution for PolyBitumens’ customer with the MEST Bitutainer Eurovia company PolyBitumens has added to its fleet of mobile storage tanks with a Mobile Equipped Storage Tank (MEST) Bitutainer from TEC Container Solutions. Located on one of PolyBitumens’ customer’s sites, the tank is storing bond coat emulsions which are applied between layers of asphalt.

TEC designed its 12m-long MEST Bitutainer for use with specialist bitumen products such as polymer modified bitumen (PMB), emulsions and rubber modified bitumens. As well as maintaining the bitumen within it at a constant temperature, the tank automatically circulates the liquid and can come equipped with agitators to stop any elements settling out – which is important for products such as those containing crumb rubber.

has built-in bunding which removes the need to construct these where it is sited or to monitor and empty the bunded area when it fills with rainwater.

Paul Kimber, business manager at PolyBitumens, which is located in Thurrock,

Essex, and serves customers in Southeast England, reported that feedback from its customer has been positive. “The MEST is fully electric, and so better for the environment with zero emissions and provides the customer with lower running costs,” he added. “The MEST’s fully automated operation provides the customer with peace of mind knowing the product can be automatically circulated and heated to ensure it is looked after in storage and ready for use at any time of the day.”

TEC operates in more than 50 countries, supplying a range of different Bitutainers. It reports that next steps in the UK will see it offering remote monitoring of its tanks.

REBLOC BOOSTS TUNNEL SAFETY Tunnels are essential components of modern transport infrastructure. In addition to structural safety, fire protection plays a crucial role

pecial importance is given to smoke-protection and exhaust-separation walls, which are constructed in front of the portals of twin-bore tunnels. These walls improve the natural airflow within the tunnels and provide critical protection, particularly in the event of a fire.

The primary function of the smoke-protection/ exhaust-separation wall is to separate the airflow conditions between adjacent tunnel bores. Air turbulence can disrupt the natural airflow in one bore by drawing air out of the adjacent one. The separation wall prevents such turbulence and ensures that the airflow within each tunnel bore is maintained in a controlled manner.

Additionally, the so-called chimney effect during a fire is specifically influenced. In the event of a tunnel fire, hot air and smoke rise and exit through the tunnel portal. The smoke-protection/exhaust-separation wall ensures that this hot smoke does not spread from one bore into the neighbouring one. Without such a barrier, smoke could spread uncontrollably into the adjacent bore, significantly hindering evacuation and rescue operations.

These walls must also withstand high thermal loads during a fire and must not lose their structural integrity, even under intense heat. Concrete proves particularly advantageous in this context because it has a high fire resistance and largely retains its load-bearing capacity even at extreme temperatures.

This ensures the protective function of the smokeprotection/exhaust-separation wall even under the most demanding conditions.

The modular integrated systems, REBLOC NBH150XA and NBL100X, made of precast concrete elements, are ideally suited to meet the diverse requirements at tunnel portals. The particular benefit of this solution lies in the fact that these constructions are tested vehicle-restraint systems according to EN 1317 with containment levels H4b and H2. This ensures a high level of safety for road users. Depending on requirements, heights of up to 8m can be achieved.

According to the required height, the systems are either free-standing or anchored. A shallow anchoring depth of a maximum of 220mm prevents interference with installations in the ground in front of the tunnel portal, for example, cables.

WEIGHT LOSS NEEDED?

The drivers of certain models of cars are now being advised by UK parking companies that the vehicles cannot fit into spaces available. The vehicles are now being banned from parking facilities due to excessive size as a result. Some of the models included on the banned list are the Mercedes S-Class, Tesla Model S, BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, Kia EV9 and Rolls Royce Cullinan. Drivers are being warned that they will be fined should they try to use parking facilities belonging to various local councils across the UK. Owners of that last model are unlikely to be flustered by parking fines, however.

FINES AREN’T FINE A woman in Darlington in the UK is rather annoyed after receiving fines totalling nearly £11,400 for leaving her car in a parking area in the city. Despite paying the daily charge to use the parking area, she has been hit with 67 fines in all. Nor is this woman alone in having the issue. The parking area has a system that requires payment to be made within a short time,

just five minutes, of entering the facility and this has apparently caught out many other drivers who are now complaining about the fines received, despite their payment of parking fees. The owners of the facility say they introduced the five-minute requirement because some drivers were entering the parking area and then waiting in their vehicles to pick up people.

But the woman has complained that it is not always possible to pay within five minutes because the parking machines are often broken and paying online can also take time as cell-phone connectivity is very poor.

ANIMAL DRUG BUST

Police officers in Ohio in the US made an arrest after they spotted a raccoon in a car with a meth pipe. The officers inspected the vehicle and realised it contained drugs and several pipes that had been used for taking illegal drugs. The owner of the car, a woman, was later arrested. She did have an outstanding warrant for use of drugs. The officers reported that no animals were harmed in the arrest, however.

Golfers at the exclusive Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, had an unwelcome disturbance to their game when a light aircraft crash-landed on their course.

The Cessna had suffered engine failure and its pilot managed to bring the aircraft down onto the green safely and without any injuries to either the occupants or golfers playing at the course.

The aircraft sustained minimal damage despite the tiny landing space used and the uneven nature of the terrain. The choice of the golf course for an impromptu landing makes a marked change from roads, which are often used by light

aircraft pilots in emergencies.

In Alaska, bush pilots will often use local roads as convenient airstrips even when aircraft are functioning correctly.

DELAYED

The UK’s busy M25 motorway had to be closed temporarily when a truck carrying milk overturned and spilled its load. Traffic ground to a halt as emergency services arrived to clean up the mess. The atmosphere amongst the cleaners soured as the work continued.

Nobody was reported to be crying over the spilt milk, luckily.

A police officer in Queensland, Australia, had a surprise recently when he saw a motorcyclist carrying her pet dog on her trailbike. The officer stopped the rider who explained that the dog was secured to her chest using a special harness purchased for the task. However, this explanation was not considered sufficient by the officer who issued a fine to the motorcyclist. The officer explained that having the dog in front of the rider constituted a safety hazard should the pet become agitated at being carried in this fashion because it would affect the rider’s ability to control the bike. The dog made no comment on the incident.
