Welcome A new year is now officially upon us and we hope 2026 will prove to be both positive and productive for Australian agriculture.

While farming never stops, we hope there is an opportunity for all farmers to enjoy a wellearned rest over this period and have some time relaxing with family and friends.

For many Australians, some downtime over summer means an opportunity to watch the cricket and there is always an extra buzz during the Ashes.

It is therefore very exciting to feature Australian cricket legend Matthew Hayden on our front cover this month.

Farms & Farm Machinery had the opportunity to sit down with him recently for a conversation about his role as a Mahindra brand ambassador, the passion for his own farm in Queensland – plus naturally a bit about his thoughts on Australian cricket.

We hope this slight change of theme will provide some enjoyable holiday reading, along with highlighting a different side of Australian farming.

New machinery remains at the forefront of this edition though, highlighted by a detailed look at JCB’s new Fastrac 6300 tractor and why the manufacturer is so excited to bring it to local customers.

Fitting in between JCB’s two existing Fastrac models, the 6300 is due to arrive in Australia mid-year and already comes backed by two international awards.

We also hear from a South Australian cropping farmer whose purchase of a Kerfab rock has proven to be exactly what he needed for clean-up jobs.

Elsewhere, we speak to a Tasmanian farmer about his new Merlo Multifarmer.

Classic collection The Victorian border town of Nyah houses an impressive collection of vintage Ford tractors which gives an insight into Australia’s agricultural history Ford machinery has been a lifelong passion for Ron Dehne.

His first job at age 16 was at Ford dealership Arnoldt & Greenwood in the northern Victorian town of Kerang and says he has “always been Ford cars, Ford this and Ford that”.

Fast forward 60 years and Ron is the owner of more than 110 Ford tractors, now housed in an impressive collection which is open to the public.

“We’ve got all the Fords from 1915 right up to 1992,” he says.

“There’s probably still maybe 20 or 30 tractors to fill the gaps, but we have got most of them up to the early 1980s.”

While Ron’s hometown of Kerang is not far from the collection’s permanent site in the border town of Nyah, the years in between have involved plenty of travel and these stories are intertwined with the tractor collection growing.

“We bought our first Ford County because my wife comes from Tasmania and we ended up with 140 acres over there,” Ron says.

“We did take a dozer over and flatten that but then needed a tractor.

“We moved up to Alice Springs in 1985 and lived there for 30 odd years and the plan was just to collect all the Counties.

“I ended up with most of them, but then

things changed and we ended up living back in Victoria.

“I don’t know what happened but another 100 tractors seemed to turn up from somewhere.”

Working around the oil and gas fields while based in Alice Springs – jobs which he admits paid well – meant money was available to indulge his passion of collecting the tractors which took his fancy.

Nowadays, monitoring the internet for online listings along with clearing sales has proven a fruitful hunting ground as Ron aims to fill in the gaps of his collection.

point, however the collection also includes plenty of old Chamberlain tractors – a nod to the Australian-made brand which was also immortalised through the ‘world’s biggest tractor’ sculpture in Western Australia.

Special finds All the tractors within Ron’s collection tell their own story while also contributing to what he believes is Australia’s largest privately owned Ford tractor collection.

The Ford County range is a major part of this, honouring the model which was a four-wheel drive conversion of Ford tractors by County Commercial Cars in England.

This collaboration continued until production ceased in 1983, making them particularly sought after by collectors.

“Some of the Counties are basically only in the UK, and some of the tractors we’ve got are the only ones in Australia,” Ron says.

“If you want to see more, you’ve got to go to the UK or those sorts of places and the collectors have got them all over there.

“About five or six years ago, we brought four tractors in from the UK and they’re all models which you won’t find here.

“One of them, which is a 1474 County, had only six of them made.

Ron took two of his tractors to last year’s Wimmera Machinery Field Days in western Victoria, where they were a popular attraction.

One of these was an 1164 TW County, a 116hp tractor produced in the 1970s and which offers a 6.6L, six-cylinder diesel Ford engine.

The other was an FW-35, manufactured in Victoria in the late 1980s and offering users a 195hp engine, again at 6.6L and six-cylinder diesel.

The specific tractor he took to Wimmera also holds a unique place within the model’s history.

“There was 39 of them built and I’ve got two of them,” Ron says.

“That one is actually number one and

the other one I’ve got is number two out of 39 – I’m pretty lucky to have that.”

Ron’s comprehensive collection also includes a complete set of the Ford Versatile tractors, along with “a few other odd things”.

Sharing passion It was only in 2023 that Ron decided to open the doors for the public to visit his collection.

It is open from Thursdays to Sundays, although Ron says out-of-town visitors are welcome on other days if he is available.

The entry cost also includes “tea or a coffee and a biscuit”, meaning visitors get a personal and welcoming experience that is about more than just entry.

Ron says the first impression from tractor enthusiasts is one of impressed surprise, both at the scale of the collection and the individual units within it.

“The way the tractors are set up is you

walk through a door and the reaction is ‘wow’ because people just haven’t seen them,” he says.

“Straight away you see four rows of tractors and then there’s another four behind that.

“All the way around the walls our crazy daughter put all these tractor jokes everywhere, so you spend a lot of time reading them while having a cup of tea.

“There are all sorts of old Ford stories and you can do lots of reading.

“You can easily spend a good couple of hours there.”

Other items such as 19th century washing machines and a collection of windmills – one of which is being set up to pump water for visitors to see – provides further interest and means a visit to Ron’s collection also provides a broader snapshot into a bygone era.

Ron also has a golf buggy, which is available for visitors with mobility issues to use while browsing the collection.

It is a passion project, and one which Ron’s family also shares and means the collection is going to live on for many years to come.

As for selecting a favourite tractor, Ron’s joking answer of “the blue and white one” shows the love he has for the entire brand.

Ron Dehne’s Ford tractor collection is located at 2658 Murray Valley Highway in Nyah, with standard opening hours of 10am and 4pm between Thursday and Sunday.

Matthew Hayden knows the value of patience after 15 years facing the world’s best bowlers as an opening batsman.

This has held the cricket legend in good stead for life on his property just outside Brisbane, where he has everything from chickens to bees, and nuts to citrus fruits.

As someone who could be on the road for months at a time during his playing career – and still is due to a variety of television commentary roles – Hayden’s busy lifestyle was never going to be conducive to something like broadacre farming.

His life as a “toy farmer” stemmed from a desire to give his three young children a taste of country life as they grew up, while also remaining close enough to the capital city to facilitate the requirements of an international cricketer and now commentator.

He made the “green change” about 22 years ago, but as the son of a peanut farmer from Kingaroy, the move took Hayden back to his agricultural roots.

“I wanted to make sure that even though we were living in suburbia in effect, in Brisbane, that the kids got a taste of all the good things about the country that we could possibly bring to them,” he says.

“There was a limited amount of time but my wife Kellie and I wanted to give the kids a sense of family life without profile.

“There is something really grounding and humbling about living more of a country life and living a life where we challenge ourselves to be more sustainable.

“It was about the kids knowing where their food comes from, giving them responsibility and tasks in and around the house and property that would enable them to respect and appreciate and enjoy livestock.”

I wanted to put my surfboards in the back and I wanted all the produce that I generate on the farm to go on the back of the tray.

“Even when I think to the tractor ranges, the little E-Max has served its purpose with the four-in-one front bucket and a slasher unit on the back so I can lift things and look after all my bees.

“It’s just been a very handy little vehicle and everything you see from a content creation point of view is actually just as authentic as you get.”

Hayden’s daughter Grace is also a Mahindra ambassador, with all three of his children learning to drive in the Mahindra pickup and holding manual licences.

“She’s a perfect fit for the role and a great ambassador as well, so it’s been a family affair really,” Hayden says.

Hayden has recently put Mahindra’s latest tractor release – the subcompact OJA series – through its paces on his property and gives them a glowing endorsement.

“They’re a very versatile product, especially with the centre mount slasher units on small properties with limited time,” he says.

“You start adding in some of those other requirements that I need to move

dirt around from a light non-commercial agricultural plot point of view, plus they’re good for post hole diggers, four-in-one buckets to the front to move soil around and slasher units for rougher area around the property.

“They’re just gold, they’re unbreakable as well, and they’re the right price point.”

Farming life Daily life at the Hayden residence manages to be both busy yet idyllic.

The days start with serenity but having such a diversity of animals and crops means plenty of maintenance is required.

“Our mornings are a cup of tea and hand-feeding kookaburras, magpies and butcher birds,” he says.

“We’ve got goats, we’ve got chickens, we’ve got geese, we’ve got pigs, we’ve got a menagerie of animals, each which have their function, if nothing else more than just adding to a property which is full of life.

“As a small lot holder, we’ve got bees, we’ve got poultry, we’ve got greens and we’ve got several veggie patches with potatoes, pumpkins and more.

“We’ve got nuts, mangoes, avocados, and we’re in clay country so we’ve got so much citrus – grapefruit, limes, kaffir limes – it’s wonderful.”

Famous face In addition to the baggy green cap which he wore in 103 test matches for Australia between 1994 and 2009, one of the many hats which Hayden now wears is that of Mahindra Australia brand ambassador.

This is a role he has held for a decade and is a logical fit given the cricket-mad nature of Mahindra’s home country of India.

Hayden is not merely the face of a glitzy advertising campaign but is instead an active user of both Mahindra’s agricultural and motoring products.

“At the time Mahindra started to engage me as a brand ambassador, we had the XUV500 – the mid-range SUV – and we had the pickup,” he says.

“The pickup was automatically something that had great attraction for me because I wanted to tow my tinnies,

Farming is a year-round operation, something which can be challenging when you are as in-demand as Hayden.

A look at his 2026 commentary schedule reveals he will be in India and Sri Lanka for the Twenty20 World Cup in February before returning to India for the ever-growing Indian Premier League.

After that will involve time in the United States to commentate on the newly formed Major League Cricket, before travelling around Australia for the test summer.

“At the moment we’re lucky because I’ve got my mum and dad and my uncle that are living next to us, so we’re kind of like a Hayden compound in many ways,” he says.

“The kids and my wife add that constant and consistent effort when I’m away, although it’s not easy.”

Grounded mindset Hayden’s farming operation is as much about the philosophy and what it represents as it is about the actual output.

His property was the subject of a 2010 television program called ‘Matthew Hayden’s Home Ground’, something which shaped both his mindset and the practicalities that have followed since.

“We virtually built our backyard around that show,” he says.

“In many ways, the theme of that show was the farmer in me wanted to grow his own food, the father in me wanted to Hayden aimed to create a country retreat in the city

know where his kids could learn and be educated around life, and the cook in me wanted to know where his food comes from.”

The lessons from that are still shaping Hayden today, who is a strong advocate for a ‘paddock to plate’ approach and believes in the benefits of growing your own produce.

“I’d never be an advocate to have small lot cropping, but if you can have planter boxes full of lettuce and herbs, that’s adding a lot of value to your house,” he says.

“If you can capture your own water, if you can capture the sun, and create energy, then it’s something that we feel really proud that we’ve been able to manage.”

Poultry is one area which Hayden is a particularly strong advocate of, describing it as the ideal starting point for any property owners deciding which path to go down with their farming.

“It’s not easy, particularly when I’m away, but the easiest thing would be to have none of it and to go to Woolworths and Coles and buy eggs,” he says.

“The reality is that it’s also not that difficult to feed birds, make sure they’ve got water, make sure they’re wormed and they’re supported in a way that’s enabling them to have a happy and free life.

“They’re high yielding too – I reckon poultry is great. If you’re going to start

anywhere, I’d say to any small lot holder that poultry is a really good start.

“One, because eggs are extremely useful and unbelievably versatile. You can have them for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and they’re pretty consistent and not a lot of high maintenance either.”

Batting and business Hayden’s commentary role means he keeps a constant eye on the Australian cricket team and he is an astute observer of the game.

The Australian test opening batsman position which Hayden made his own has been an ongoing source of discussion among cricket followers, both in the short and long-term.

Regardless of whoever ultimately claims this position, Hayden is confident Australia’s broader cricketing structure will hold the national team in good stead – provided there is a healthy dose of the patience which farmers know all about.

“The great thing about Australian cricket is that it does have a really solid pathways program, so whilst we all might be a little worried around whom our David Warner is, the reality is that we produce great cricketers because our various and respective states and clubs and volunteer base put a truckload of energy into making them good cricketers,” he says.

“I had seven years of averaging 21 before

I started to really develop a good game at the highest level.

“Selectors were patient, other teammates were patient and I had to be patient – so there’s nothing wrong with the old ways of trying to work your way into a team.

“Competition doesn’t hurt anyone. No matter whether you’re in the ag business or cricket, it’s a healthy competition that makes you grow as a person, and that’s ultimately what you want out of the game.”

Low ground compaction was highlighted in the Fastrac 6300’s Tractor of the Year award

Future star JCB CEA is not resting on its laurels, adding a third model to its local Fastrac tractor range.

The 6300 will fit between the existing 4220 and 8330 models in terms of power and offers plenty of improvements over the already feature-packed tractors.

It is set to arrive in Australia in mid-2026 and has the validation of two international awards behind it, having been named Tractor of the Year in the sustainable category at Agritechnica last November, and Machine of the Year gold award ahead of the LAMMA Exhibition in January.

JCB’s national Fastrac product manager Andrew Hacker describes the 6330 as a “reimagined Fastrac” that combines the best of the existing models along with significant upgrades and improvements.

“It still contains the Fastrac DNA and really brings everything that previous Fastracs have brought to the table, but reimagined and improved,” he says.

“It combines the manoeuvrability of the 4220 with the power and strength of the 8330.”

JCB’s Fastrac 6300 will reach Australia by mid-2026

Carefully designed JCB’s Fastrac 6300 offers a 335hp (250kW) engine, an 11,000kg rear lift capacity, optional 410L/min hydraulic flow and can reach maximum speeds of 66km/h.

It is a tractor which can handle the most demanding of Australian broadacre jobs, leading Hacker to describe it as being closer to the 8330, but the extra presence of four-wheel steering adds a significant boost for farmers requiring tight turns.

“It offers quite a long list of improvements over both the tractors, but if you’re comparing it to the 8330, then having the four-wheel steering improves the manoeuvrability immensely,” Hacker says.

“There is a new engine, transmission and axle driveline underneath the tractor, which brings a lot of operator improvements.

“It’s a four-range CVT that changes automatically on the go as opposed to a two-range stationary change box on the previous tractor, which is a big change and improvement in how the tractor drives and delivers its’ power to the ground.

“In certain applications like row cropping and irrigation blocks where tight turns are required, the 6300 is going to outperform the 8330 massively.”

Like the 8330 iCON, the 6300 iCON

will be an ideal tractor for the broadacre market, offering the power needed for big jobs with the added benefit of reducing soil compaction thanks to a host of features that were highlighted when it won the sustainability award.

“For broadacre jobs like in-crop spreading and in-crop spraying, you’ve got a tractor that just offers absolute minimum crop damage,” Hacker says, “It’s certainly a big tick of approval that it’s been put up in front of external judges and it has won a couple of prestigious awards.

“Part of the reason for that award has been driven by the central tyre inflation system, but also just its ability to be gentle on the ground with its suspension and true-track steering.”

Considered design The central tyre inflation system is one of JCB’s key additions on the Fastrac 6330 which was highlighted by Tractor of the Year award judges.

This is a unique single line system that is fully integrated into the axles and comprises of twin 315cc compressors which deliver 600L/min of air flow via a blast cooler to minimise system temperature.

The air is deflated at the rim, which

helps to protect the internal components from any dust or debris.

JCB says this system helps to increase tractive performance, improve efficiency and reduce soil compaction.

“This is a really impressive, top of the line, well-designed system that will be awesome for those customers looking to vary their tyre pressures to suit conditions,” Hacker says.

The Fastrac 6300’s transmission is also a standout feature, with an automatic exhaust brake being integrated with the Smart Transmission Control for improved braking and performance.

Meeting demand New South Wales-based Grazag does not have machinery at its forefront, but owner Jason Litchfield was so impressed by Rata Equipment’s Power Claw that he added the product to the company’s offering.

Litchfield is a farmer himself, in addition to owning the business which mostly specialises in the likes of fertiliser, seed, fencing and animal health products.

After initially investing in a Power Claw for his own farm, Litchfield decided to branch out and begin selling them due to the momentum gained from wordof-mouth endorsements and the sheer weight of referrals he was receiving.

While Grazag may have ‘fallen into’ becoming a Rata dealer, the move quickly paid dividends after an unexpected weather event in the New England Tablelands area where he is based.

in the two months following this, along with roughly 15 more from his mate’s shop in nearby Walcha.

“That’s a lot of Power Claws into the New England Tablelands,” Litchfield says.

“The snowstorm made a heck of a mess with limbs out of trees and stuff flattened everywhere.

“Everyone has been madly cleaning up after that and there’s still cleaning up to be done.

“Our own machine hasn’t stopped since the 3rd of August [the day after] and it’s still going.”

Strong referrals Grazag first became a Power Claw dealer about 12 months ago and admits the snowstorm acted as a “bell curve” in terms of creating significant demand for the product.

It has also resulted in plenty of word-ofmouth referrals, with Litchfield citing one

recent example of a customer which Rata Equipment’s team passed on to him to follow up.

“It was a client that we hadn’t seen for a while, so I rang him up and he said ‘good to hear from you, have you got one down there?’,” Litchfield says.

“I said we did so he said he would come down and pick one up – which he now has.”

These referrals have proven valuable for both Rata Equipment and Grazag, with Litchfield praising the relationship he has built with Rata’s Australian sales and operations manager Bronson Crick.

“The service from Bronson has been second to none and they’ve really supported us well to support their product,” Litchfield says.

“We chase all the referrals up for him because we obviously know most of the people around in this area and that’s where the growth has come from.

Within each section, varying working widths are available to ensure the product is perfectly suited to the machine it will be paired with.

Adaptability is another of the Power Claw’s strengths, with Litchfield citing the example of his own Claw’s ability to alternate between work on a skid steer and tractor.

“We’ve got a sandwich board for our skid steer and it’s been fantastic because the skid steer is really good in confined areas,” he says.

“You can really get a lot more movement around your pile than the tractor, but the benefit with putting it on the tractor is you can lift your gear higher.

“We just made sure we got a Euro hitch and we bought a plate – so while we just mainly use it on the skid steer, we can use it with a tractor too.”

“We carry a few in stock so that we make sure we’ve got something there for people to have a look at and see the quality.

“We normally carry one of each model and the product is very well put together.”

Rata’s Power Claw range can be split into three broad models – standard, mid-range and compact.

“The feedback is that they’re excellent for piling up and they’re excellent if you’re burning at the same time because you can make quite a pile of sticks and get more air in under them without getting all the dirt and rock like you would pushing up with a blade,” he says.

“Half the battle at home is when you’re using the dozer or tractor and blade or bucket and pushing up heaps to burn, you’re always pushing all the dirt in as well so you never get a clean burn.

“This way, because you can actually drive up to a fire or make a fire before you light it, it’s just timber.

“There’s nothing pushed into it, so it just burns beautifully. It’s like having a pile of

matches stacked up and then it just goes.”

While Grazag may not be a traditional machinery dealer, Litchfield has strong connections to the machinery sector through his grandfather starting an equipment and service business more than 80 years ago in nearby Condobolin which is still active today.

His cousin also runs an equipment service business in Tamworth, while his own unique status as a business owner and farmer means he can give an authentic testimonial of the Power Claw to customers who ask him about it.

“The fact I own this business and we have quite a bit of farming country means we use a lot of these products, which gives you more of an understanding of how everything works,” he says.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s a Power Claw or a drummer drench or a packet of ear tags – you know the pros and cons of all your products because you actually get to use them yourself.

“People are actually asking your opinion as well and it has been fantastic.

“They’re a very good product and very adaptable and I’d have to give the Rata boys a pat on the back because they’re a great group to deal with.”

Mark Jenkinson has purchased a Merlo MF44.7

Crucial piece As a former mechanical engineer with experience in running workshops, Mark Jenkinson looks at machinery differently to many others.

Jenkinson made a “tree change” with his wife and family from South Australia to Tasmania, where he now runs a cattle breeding operation across 770 acres spread over three farms.

He recently purchased a Merlo Multifarmer 44.7, a unique machine which combines the benefits of a tractor and telehandler.

Powered by a 170hp engine, this machine also offers a 4,000kg load capacity and 7m lift height.

Jenkinson admits he is new to farming, having only operated a 30-acre hobby farm in South Australia prior to moving.

Having this fresh perspective on farming, along with his background in running factories, gives Jenkinson a unique and analytical take on the benefits of a machine and how it fits into the bigger picture of a smooth and efficient operation.

Important cog To fully understand Jenkinson’s Merlo purchase requires understanding his entire farming setup – and how the MF44.7 plays an important role despite contradicting one of his machinery rules.

“One of the things we very quickly learned is there is a huge volume of materials handling in farming,” he says.

“Because I come from a mechanical engineering background, at our farm we’ve been developing machinery that allows us to reduce the number of times we pick something up and put it down.”

During this quest for improving efficiencies, ground compaction is critical to Jenkinson, with the Tasmanian soil in stark contrast to the “absolutely terrible” ground which his South Australian hobby farm had.

“We have much more biomass in our soil here and have five times the rainfall that Adelaide had,” he says.

“Ground compaction becomes more important when you have lots of biomass, so to reduce our ground compaction,

we’ve been purchasing earthmoving machinery for materials handling with tracks on them.

“We try and target less than four psi of ground compaction on any vehicle that we purchase, but the Merlo contradicted that rule.”

While the Merlo might be an outlier in terms of being a wheeled rather than tracked machine, that only serves to increase its importance on Jenkinson’s farm.

For a purpose Jenkinson chooses not to drive the Merlo into the paddocks themselves but rather uses it as a materials handling workhorse where the benefits of its tractor and telehandler capabilities become apparent.

“If you are going to move materials around and the machine does not drive into a paddock, then it makes sense to move it on a wheeled vehicle and have a multi-use platform,” he says.

“That’s why we selected the Merlo – because it is a telehandler – and in our

“It is not so big that people are fearful of driving it, and not so small that it becomes not worth moving large amounts of material handling reasonable distances.

“We are often moving items, even on our property, four or five kilometres at a time, and the Merlo’s capabilities fit into that bracket nicely.”

Its centre of gravity is much lower than a standard tractor, Jenkinson adds, which means that while his wife is not comfortable with driving a tractor on a hillside, she is happy to do so with the Merlo MF44.7.

“We can now move three and a half tonnes easily and quickly outside of our paddocks, but we can reach over

“It is a piece of equipment that my wife is happy to drive, and my two kids in their late teens drive it as well.

it for, but it was absolutely fantastic. We needed to sideshift it 200mm, so we crabbed forward and sideshifted and it was much more efficient than other machines.

“We also like the idea of being able to rock it sideways by eight degrees either way.”

Jenkinson’s flatbed truck is inclined two degrees when parked on flat ground, something which he can use to his advantage with the MF44.7 “It is so nice to drive up to it with the Merlo, and rock the Merlo fork tines over until it matches that on the truck bed and you are not scraping or splintering pallets or putting a fork through a bag of fertiliser,” he says.

“It is just amazing that you can do that and this is a feature which we identified very early on and which we use on a daily basis.”

In addition to the precision offered by its telehandler capabilities, Jenkinson also plans to make use of the tractor-like grunt which the MF44.7 offers.

He has previously done his baling with a 60hp tractor, which he admits is often working the tractor beyond its capabilities, whereas the Merlo MF44.7 provides the capabilities and ease-of-use to take on this important job.

“The only time we foresee the Merlo going into a paddock is when we are baling,” he says.

“The CVTronic automatic hub drive of the Merlo allows us to run the PTO at a fixed 540rpm, which is what our implements require, and then you can

vary the forward speed with your throttle pedal and even set a cruise control.

“I love the fact that the PTO shaft speed is decoupled completely from the drive mechanism, which is not necessarily the case with a geared tractor where you have to set your gears and throttle.

“Our baler is a baler and wrapper combination, and it needs a reasonable sort of hydraulic flow and a reasonable PTO horsepower, and the Merlo gives us both of those.”

Jenkinson has added a bulk bucket, GP bucket and forklift tines to his MF44.7, giving him the versatility needed for multiple jobs.

He also praises the quick hitch for enabling an easy change between attachments, along with an electronic puck on the bucket that knows the empty weight and automatically recalculates how much material is being carried.

It also exceeds the requirements for road registration in Tasmania, something which Jenkinson says many standard telehandlers do not, bringing another advantage when he is moving between farms.

Impressive service Jenkinson first discovered the Merlo while having a few hours to kill in Melbourne, before dropping into a dealership.

Unaware he would need to ultimately purchase the machine from his local dealership in Tasmania, he was impressed with the level of service

which was still provided even after the salesman learned that fact.

“When we said we were from Tasmania, he said we need to talk to Dave Morrison at DLM Machinery because they are loyal to Merlo and back each other up,” he says.

“He then spent another three quarters of an hour with us talking about the machine, pulling machines out of the yard and driving them around a little bit.

“I was impressed with that loyalty between the agents and they were not just trying to crawl all over each other to make a quick sale.

“That’s how I ran my businesses – trying to always be loyal to the customers and the agents and I think this is a good and wholesome way to run a business.

“Since we purchased the machine, Dave has been up to my place a couple of times to see how we are going with it.”

As for the machine itself, Jenkinson’s feedback is nothing but positive.

“The Merlo has satisfied or exceeded all of our initial expectations,” he says.

“Often if you design machines for a particular task, and then you try and get it to do too many things, you end up with a compromise that it does not do any of them well.

“That is not the case with the Merlo – it seems to do everything well and I cannot say anything negative about it.”

Mike Casey’s cherry farm is in New Zealand’s Central Otago region

Electric avenue There are plenty of stories of people who wanted a lifestyle change and set up a farm, but none quite like that of Mike Casey.

After moving to Sydney and developing a successful technology start-up, Casey returned to his native New Zealand to “reinvent himself” and set up a fully electric cherry orchard.

A fleet of 21 electric machines, including a four-wheel drive 1989 Hilux ute which he converted to being electric, is complemented by an array of other investments including solar and battery systems to power the fleet.

This is far from a novelty operation – with Casey’s farm in New Zealand’s Central Otago region producing roughly 10 million cherries every year from its 9,300 trees.

With his background in technology and computer science making him a detail-oriented person, every investment Casey has made on the farm is about crunching the numbers and analysing the return on investment.

He was a guest at last year’s National Renewables in Agriculture Conference in Bendigo, where he told the story of how his farm came about and why he believes his efforts can be replicated on both sides of the Tasman.

Unusual path Casey’s journey into agriculture has not been a traditional one.

After growing up in the New Zealand capital of Wellington, he got a computer science degree before moving to Sydney, where he spent 12 years and developed a website for students looking for their first job after university.

Selling this gave him enough capital to return to New Zealand with his young family, choosing the Central Otago region which he loved and had travelled to every year to ski.

“I’m an entrepreneur who loves a new opportunity and I needed to reinvent myself, start a new chapter and figure out what I wanted to do next,” he says.

“I was looking for houses and found a

farm with the perfect house on it with nine hectares of spare land for the same price as a four-bedroom home in Wanaka or Queenstown.”

Combined with his wife Rebecca’s background as a chief financial officer, the couple realised they had found a bargain and Electric Cherries from Forest Lodge Orchard was born.

Unique fleet Casey is a firm believer in the quality of New Zealand cherries, with the majority of the farm’s 10 million per year being exported to Asian markets.

Despite this quality, he knows the orchard has instead become best known for the fact it is powered by 21 electric machines.

“Absolutely everything on our farm is electric – we don’t use a single drop of diesel or a single ounce of gas,” he says.

“We have orchard utility vehicles such as custom golf carts, and in New Zealand we still don’t have a purely electric fourwheel drive ute yet, so we made one.

“That is a 1989 Hilux that I had a lot of fun converting in the farm shed.”

Casey’s commitment to using electric machinery extends to the large scale as well, even innovating to ensure emerging technology could still be used.

“We had the southern hemisphere’s first commercial electric tractor and we made an electric foliage sprayer to go on the back of that tractor,” he says.

“It runs off a 32-amp caravan plug rather than the PTO on the back of the tractor and uses about 15 per cent of the energy to do the same job, which at the end of the day means that I can run my entire orchard spraying operation on a single charge of that tractor.

“Every year Mainfreight lends us an electric truck to take our fully electric cherries on an electric journey down to the fully electric packhouse.

“No fossil fuels are used in any part of this until we’re ready to ship them out into the big wide world.”

Other electric machinery includes lawnmowers, cars and forklifts, along with power tools and irrigation pumps.

Electric Cherries from Forest Lodge Orchard also runs fully electric frost fighting fans, which were imported from South Africa and which Casey says are the first in New Zealand.

These cost about $9 per hour to run with electricity, as opposed to “hundreds of dollars an hour” when powered by diesel.

Casey acknowledges that Australian farmers face some different challenges to those in New Zealand but highlights a considerably higher solar uptake in Australia as being one area where this country is already ahead.

Beyond just agriculture, he says about 10 million machines are powered by fossil fuels in New Zealand – numbers sourced after extensive research by his team – with an estimated 700,000 of these being what he considers not ready to electrify.

“We always spend time focusing on the big machines, like our 250 horsepower tractors, and explaining why it is that we cannot electrify our farms,” he says.

“I recently had a neighbour of mine who is a land excavator talk about driving a 20-tonne electric excavator in Australia and just how it was an amazing experience.

“Maybe it might not be long before these electric excavators move into the 1 million machines in New Zealand that are almost ready to electrify – or machines that you have to go out of your way to electrify.

“There are also 8.5 million machines that are ready to electrify right now and I can put my hand on my heart and tell everyone in New Zealand – you are never better off buying a fossil fuel machine again. That is pretty exciting.”

On a mission Casey is steadfast in his view that electrifying a farm is economically viable rather than just fanciful, and prides himself on being open with all his finances to prove this.

“I am very transparent with my numbers because transparency breeds trust,” he says.

“I have published absolutely every last cent that we have spent on our electrification journey to prove a point that New Zealand is now far more economical to go down this path than it is to look at continuing to run on foreignsourced fossil fuels.”

Casey says the capital outlay on his 21 electric machines was $400,000 more than purchasing diesel equivalents, with some government grants enabling him to reduce the payback period on these from 13 years down to eight.

Grid electricity in New Zealand is about one-third the price of diesel on a usable kilowatt hour basis, he adds, which means that while his electricity bill does rise, the overall net spend on energy goes down significantly.

“With our solar, when we finance it on our farm mortgage at about 5.5 per cent, we have got that payback down to around about 5.5 years, which is pretty

remarkable when you think about it, because these solar panels are going to last 25 to 30 years,” he says.

Casey also estimated the annual diesel costs for his 21 machines would be about $50,000, which would be more than halved to about $20,000 by going electric and running off the national grid.

By adding solar panels on his farm shed roof, then further increasing their size with more panels, and supplementing it with battery power, he has been able to turn fuel costs into a net profit.

“I think I am going to turn a $50,000 diesel bill to probably a $40,000

electricity revenue stream this year. On a farm that will make about $250,000 of profit in a good year, you can see how much of a betterment of the economics of my farm this has become,” he says.

“It’s like adding about 3,300 additional trees.”

Casey acknowledges there will always be a percentage of farmers who are cynical and do not want to electrify their farms.

His focus is instead on ensuring farmers who are interested – and who see the economic benefits in doing so – are not faced with further impediments.

“We just need to make sure that all the other farmers have the ability that they want to be able to do this,” he says.

“In New Zealand, with irrigation and with dairy sheds today, we are incredibly high energy users, particularly electricity users, and this is a really good opportunity to start saving on farm input costs when these just keep going up and up.

“That is an important thing to add – I’m not just asking farmers to do this out of their good graces. I’m asking them to do it because it’s in their financial best interest to do it.”

Right to repair A commitment to extend Right to Repair reforms to agricultural machinery has been hailed as a historic win by the National Farmers’ Federation The National Farmers’ Federation has announced it has secured a federal government commitment to extend Right to Repair reforms to agricultural machinery, hailing it as a historic win for farmers and a direct result of years of advocacy.

Following a meeting of state and territory treasurers in late November, federal treasurer Jim Chalmers confirmed that agricultural machinery will be included in national Right to Repair reforms designed to modernise Australia’s economy and lift productivity.

In a broad sense, Right to Repair laws would enable Australian farmers to have repairs to their agricultural machinery made by independent repairers – rather than just the manufacturer’s single authorised dealer – without voiding their warranty.

The NFF says this reform will see real economic gains for the sector,

with modelling by the Productivity Commission showing it could lift agricultural production to $97 million, and greater competition in the repair sector will lead to a $311 million increase to GDP. NFF president Hamish McIntyre says the announcement was a major breakthrough for farmers delivering much needed competition and productivity uplift.

“Farmers will finally have more freedom to choose who services and repairs their machinery,” he says.

“That means less downtime, lower costs, and more control over their own businesses.

“When a machine breaks down in the middle of harvest, waiting on an authorised dealer isn’t just inconvenient, it can cost tens of thousands of dollars. This reform will help farmers stay productive and competitive, which is exactly what farmers and the economy needs.”

The NFF has led this reform for many

years, in partnership with NFF members who formed the NFF’s Right to Repair Taskforce.

The Tractor & Machinery Association of Australia (TMA) has also welcomed the announcement but warns that calls for unrestricted machine modification risk safety, compliance, and productivity.

“We fully support a farmer’s right to repair their own machine and the ability to use third-party repairers,” TMA executive director Gary Northover says.

“What we don’t support is the right to modify machines in ways that may compromise safety, emissions compliance, or global manufacturing standards.”

The TMA has actively sought collaborative solutions to ensure practical access to repair information and tools for farmers and independent service providers.

Northover adds the TMA attempted to establish a Memorandum of Understanding with the NFF, like the agreement reached between the American Farm Bureau Federation and key US manufacturers but was unsuccessful.

“Many of our dealers report that some of their biggest customers are third-party repairers,” he says.

“There simply aren’t enough technicians within dealer networks to service all the machines in the field. Responsible relationships between dealers and independent repairers already exist, and it’s patently inaccurate to say farm machinery can only be repaired by authorised workshops.”

Karoonda Farm Fair and Show will not take place this year, with a shortage of committee members forcing the event to be cancelled.

The event is held in the town of Karoonda, east of Adelaide, and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2025.

It has entered caretaker mode for next year with organisers hopeful it could make a return in 2027.

“We acknowledge and sincerely thank the many volunteers who have supported and sustained this

community event for 40 years. Your contribution has been invaluable,” organisers said.

“Efforts to recruit new committee members will continue, and we would love to hear from anyone willing to be involved for 2027.”

Record forecast New figures show Australia’s agriculture industry is well on track to reach a record value of almost $100 billion this financial year The latest ABARES Agricultural Commodities Report has been released and forecasts the gross value of agricultural production will rise to a record $99.5 billion in 2025-26, driven by exports which are also expected to reach a record value of $83.9 billion.

National Farmers’ Federation president Hamish McIntyre says these figures show Australia’s agricultural industry is on track to reach its target of $100 billion in farm gate output by 2030.

“The 2030 Roadmap’s $100 billion target

has long been our sector’s north star and it’s exciting to see farmers are on track to hit it ahead of time,” he says.

“Despite global market volatility and extreme weather events, the sector has continued to make productivity gains.

This is a testament to our sector’s ability to innovate, adapt to an ever-changing climate, invest back into farm businesses, and above all, putting in the hard yards.

“We are not over the line yet. We need to make sure we have smart policies around trade, tax, regulation, competition and

The federal government has introduced the framework for the Universal Outdoor Mobile Obligation (UOMO) legislation, which will require national mobile carriers Telstra, Optus and TPG to provide access to SMS and voice coverage for Australians nationwide.

It is expected the changes will help add up to 5 million square kilometres of basic outdoor mobile SMS and voice coverage across the country, which will reduce rural connectivity issues for farmers and keep them safer by ensuring they are able to call for help in times of emergency.

This will be made possible by a combination of existing terrestrial towers and new Low Earth Orbit Satellite technology, which allows for mobile signals to connect Direct to Device rather than relying on land-based infrastructure

like mobile towers, the government says.

The UOMO will start by December 1, 2027, subject to market developments, with the federal government working closely with industry to monitor the rollout of new Direct to Device technology.

The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) has welcomed the introduction of this legislation, calling it a landmark step toward fixing the communications blackspots that hold farmers and regional Australia back.

NFF president Hamish McIntyre says it has the potential to redraw the mobile coverage map.

“For too long, farmers and people in the bush have been on the wrong side of the digital divide,” he says.

“This legislation sets a new benchmark to enshrine outdoor mobile coverage as a

Boosting growth New South Wales’ Agriculture Industries Innovation and Growth program will provide grants of between $500,000 and $4 million and will cover farm processing upgrades New South Wales has unveiled a $25 million investment program to boost the growth of agricultural industries across the state, by funding businesses to make innovation and productivity enhancements, plus lower operational greenhouse gas emissions.

The new Agriculture Industries Innovation and Growth Program covers grants of between $500,000 and $4 million for eligible applicants such as businesses, cooperatives and for-profit organisations operating in the agricultural sector.

It will also cover upgrades to on-farm and off-farm processing facilities to improve the value add of NSW agricultural

products and enabling the purchase of production equipment and agtech that will lower emissions.

Examples of the type of projects that could attract the grant funding may include – but are not limited to – the production of new higher efficiency fertilisers from agricultural waste that improve outputs and deliver improved environmental outcomes, installation of equipment that enables the production and packaging of plantbased protein products or new crops, and equipment to increase production of new feed additives that have been developed and designed to contribute towards reduced emissions in the beef sector.

Sustainable cropping RMIT University’s newly launched hub aims to deliver renewable energy technologies for greenhouses, driving forward the potential of protected cropping RMIT University has launched its ARC Research Hub for Intelligent Energy Efficiency in Future Protected Cropping (E2Crop Hub), which will advance sustainable protected cropping with intelligent, renewable and energy-efficient greenhouse solutions for the future of agriculture.

The E2Crop Hub is an Australian Research Council (ARC) supported major initiative, which aims to pioneer solutions in renewable energy, plant quality enhancement, intelligent greenhouse monitoring and analysis to drive forward the vast potential of protected cropping.

Working alongside 12 industry partners over a five-year research program, the Hub will focus on delivering advanced energy technologies for greenhouses, enabling them to be self-sustained, affordable and powered by renewable energy, as well as new automated decision-making techniques for farmers.

“The E2Crop Hub brings together leading research capabilities from RMIT University, the Australian National University,

Western Sydney University and the University of New South Wales,” E2Crop Hub director Tianyi Ma says.

Ma adds the Hub is well-positioned to meet the challenge of developing a more sustainable agricultural industry.

“The world urgently needs smarter and more sustainable ways to grow food.

Protected cropping – including hightech greenhouses and vertical farming – will play a critical role in future food production, but these systems are energy intensive.” he says.

“To scale sustainably, the future of agriculture must be a future of intelligent and energy efficient innovation. That is the challenge that sits at the heart of the E2Crop Hub, and it is one we at the Hub are uniquely positioned to address.”

Virtual fencing technology uses collars with GPS and wireless technology to manage livestock without physical fences.

Virtual fencing Cattle producers in Victoria and New South Wales can now use virtual fencing to guide and contain livestock, with both state governments approving the safe use of the technology The Victorian and New South Wales governments have each announced new regulations which will give their state’s farmers access to virtual fencing and herding technology.

Virtual fencing technology uses collars or neck bands with GPS and wireless compatibility, delivering sensory cues to influence the movement of livestock.

This is a solution to managing cattle without the need for physical fencing within a farm’s boundaries.

The technology can also monitor the activity, health and welfare of cattle, and can reduce the stress of the animals that can arise from herding with quad bikes and dogs.

The new regulations for both states have been developed following engagement with industry, manufacturers, researchers and animal welfare groups to better understand the impacts of this technology on animals.

Farmers adopting this technology will need to comply with certain requirements. In Victoria, this includes using approved technologies, completing manufacturer training, maintaining a physical boundary fence or barrier and

ensuring collars are checked regularly.

In NSW, the requirements include being trained in how to use the device by the supplier or manufacturer, ensuring devices are regularly monitored and animal welfare standards are met, using vibrational or audio cues first before using electric cues, and controlling the boundaries that trigger cues, instead of delivering cues directly to an animal.

As part of the regulations, virtual fencing technology can only be used for cattle.

In Victoria, farmers can only use it on livestock species other than cattle when a scientific licence has been granted under the POCTA Act, and the use is approved by an Animal Ethics Committees.

Victorian manufacturers can now apply to Agriculture Victoria for their virtual fencing technology to be approved, with the first products expected to be approved in early February 2026. The approval conditions will include requirements for record keeping and reporting.

A demonstration of virtual fencing technology took place at Agriculture Victoria’s Ellinbank SmartFarm in Gippsland between July 2024 and May 2025, giving farmers a better understanding of how it works.

Dairy cattle were fitted with solarpowered smart collars that use audio, vibration and electronic cues to contain animals within a virtual fence and guide them to areas of the farm via a mobile phone app.

The system also allowed farm staff to monitor the cows’ location, health and reproductive status.

The Victorian government says the trial demonstrated how virtual fencing technology can enhance livestock management, enabling farmers to monitor animal health and location in real time.

The state government adds cows adapted well to the system, with milk yields remaining consistent with expectations.

Western Victoria is already a leader in growing crops for plant-based protein products, with the state’s pulse industry generating $638 million in export income last year, and Australia exports around 2.5 million tonnes of pulses annually, making it the second-largest pulse exporter in the world.

“Victoria is leading the way in plantbased protein research, building worldclass facilities and fostering collaboration that will transform agriculture and strengthen regional economies,” Victorian agriculture minister Ros Spence says.

The new glasshouse will accelerate crop research, improve pest and disease management and boost climate resilience – helping farmers adapt to changing conditions and maintain productivity.

Tractors between 40-100hp recorded a sales increase compared to November 2024.

Mixed month Tractor sales were subdued during November, according to Tractor & Machinery Association figures, but mid-sized models showed positive signs November has seen another slide in sales of agricultural tractors.

With around 700 units sold, this was 2.5 per cent down on the same month last year.

On a year-to-date basis, Australia remains around 8 per cent below last year and it now appears likely that a full year sales figure of around 10,000 tractors may be a stretch.

The biggest declines were felt in the two extreme weight categories, namely the small, under-40hp range and the large, above-200hp range.

Inventory levels remain high and most brands are offering competitive sales and finance deals.

Buyer demand however remains subdued and is likely to remain so well into 2026.

Across the nation, it is apparent that one good month is often followed by a bad month and vice versa, which are signs of fluctuating demand and stretched resources.

Business in Western Australia remains strong off the back of a bumper harvest, up by 2 per cent for the month to be 1.7 per cent ahead for the year to date, however

sales in Queensland took a dip for the first time in a while.

There were major spikes in South Australia, which was up by 50 per cent for the month, along with the smaller market of Tasmania which had a 127 per cent increase compared to November 2024.

Across the nation, the 40-100hp and 100-200hp categories both posted monthly rises but remain behind on year-to-date numbers.

Following a bumper October for combine harvester sales, November saw a drop of 29 per cent for the month and that product is now 1 per cent down on last year.

will be around 700 units, well down from the recent highs of more than 1,000 sales.

Baler sales were again strong during November, being up 24 per cent on the same month last year and are now ahead 4 per cent on the full year, while out-front mower sales were also up for the month but remain 20 per cent behind on the year to date.

Finally, sales of self-propelled sprayers were down 8 per cent compared to the same month last year and remain 38 per cent behind on a year-to-date basis.

History repeats WAFarmers CEO Trevor Whittington sees plenty of similarities between the Roaring Twenties a century ago and what the world is experiencing now History rarely repeats itself cleanly, yet the farming parallels between the Roaring Twenties and our own Turbulent Twenties are impossible to miss.

A century divides the decades, but the story is nearly identical: a machinery revolution arrives just as commodity prices fall through the floor.

The steel wheels and kerosene engines of the 1920s have become the silicon processors and AI-driven farm machinery of today – and in both eras, farmers have found themselves riding a wave of technological progress at precisely the moment the grain market turns sour.

The 1920s were the formative decade for the machinery brands that would dominate global agriculture for the next hundred years.

Henry Ford, already reshaping the world with the Model T, turned his attention to farming in 1917 with the Fordson Model F – the world’s first mass-produced tractor.

Cheap, simple and aggressively priced, it flooded global markets and forced older manufacturers to innovate or disappear.

the merger of McCormick and Deering, countered with the 10-20 and 15-30 series – kerosene-burning tractors that became the backbone of early broadacre farming in Australia.

John Deere, still primarily a plough maker, bought the Waterloo Engine Company in 1923 and launched the now-iconic Model D, setting the company on a century-long trajectory.

If Fordson brought wheels to the paddock, Rumely brought raw power.

The Rumely OilPull, famous for its heavy-oil engines, became a technological cult machine of the early 1920s.

But Rumely overreached financially and, like so many manufacturers battered by post-war commodity collapse, went under before J.I. Case acquired it in 1931.

Overshadowing them all was the emergence of Caterpillar, born from the 1925 merger of California’s two great crawler pioneers, Best and Holt.

Both firms had spent years perfecting track-laying tractors, and their union created the Caterpillar Tractor Company.

Its early crawlers – the 2-Ton, 10-Ton, Thirty, Forty and the iconic Sixty – became the mechanical ancestors of every modern track machine from dozers to Quadtracs.

Even within that decade, horsepower was racing ahead.

In 1920 a typical broadacre tractor such as the Fordson or International 10-20 delivered 20-25 hp, but by 1930 farmers were running Caterpillar Thirtys and Fortys at 35-45 hp, with the Cat Sixty stretching to 60 hp.

Headers scaled rapidly in the 1920s.

A Sunshine stripper carried a 6-foot front in 1920, yet by 1930 the new pulltype combines were cutting 12-foot swaths, doubling working width and tripling throughput.

Prices skyrocketed too – from £80-120 for a stripper in 1920 to £350-450 for a combine by 1930.

This was a 300-400 per cent increase in just a decade, driven by the same mix of innovation and inflation farmers face today.

Long before the modern header fully took shape, the dream of self-propelled harvesting had already begun to stir.

Gleaner, then a small but inventive American firm, experimented throughout the 1920s with early SP concepts – essentially bolting engines onto modified combines.

The prototypes proved the idea but were fragile, underpowered and too costly for broadacre use.

The breakthrough finally came in 1938,

when Massey-Harris released the No. 20, the world’s first commercially viable self-propelled combine.

Its successor, the No. 21, became the first mass-produced SP model, launching the era of one-man harvesting that still defines farming today.

Fast-forward to the Turbulent Twenties and the contrast is staggering.

Today’s articulated giants like the John Deere 9RX push 830 horsepower, working alongside modern headers such as the New Holland CR11 – machines capable of harvesting in five minutes what a 1920s outfit struggled to achieve in an entire day.

The horsepower gap tells the same story: from 60 hp to 830 hp – a fifteen-fold leap.

Today’s biggest seeding bars, at 120 feet, are ten times the width of the standard Shearer drills of the era, although the first twin-hitch combinations and Sunshine’s 15-foot “big-box” models were already hinting at the scale to come.

Yet mechanisation landed at the worst possible time.

Wheat prices crashed from US$2.58 per bushel in 1919 to just 80 cents by 1922.

By 1927 wheat was still barely half the post war average at US$1.40, but slipped to

US$1.00 by mid-1929, fell below 90 cents after the Wall Street Crash, and by 1931-32 was trading at 30-40 cents – an economic catastrophe.

A century later the pattern is all too familiar. Chicago wheat futures soared to a high of US$11.83 per bushel in May 2022 and have since retreated towards US$5-6, even as machinery prices, power ratings and operating costs have exploded.

In both eras, farmers embraced bigger,

better machines just as the commodity cycle turned brutally against them.

The worry now is that the Turbulent Twenties don’t finish the way the 1920s did – with a global crash and a decade of depression.

The warning signs are uncomfortably familiar: rising debt, ballooning deficits, tariff wars and geopolitical shocks.

A century on, some patterns never change.

With Isuzu Power Solutions and Mercedes-Benz industrial engines now part of its portfolio, LK Diesel Services has cemented itself as a leader in power generation and engine reliability It’s been approximately one year since Melbourne’s LK Diesel Services was appointed as an Isuzu Power Solutions authorised dealer, with this milestone having coincided with another significant achievement for the business.

Throughout this same timeframe, LK Diesel has also been an authorised dealer of Daimler & Mercedes-Benz industrial diesel engines, covering the supply of new units, maintenance and servicing.

LK Diesel general manager and co-owner Bernard Kuhlwind says the addition of these brands was a result of Deutz AG’s global acquisition, which had direct implications for the Braeside-based business, having been a trusted Deutz Australia dealer for more than four decades.

“After Deutz AG purchased that division of Mercedes-Benz they became the national distributor, and therefore we became a new dealer of these engines,” he says.

“In time, they will be rebranded but there are still a lot of engines out there under the Daimler and Mercedes-Benz

names and will be for many years.”

Bernard adds the new engines have been well received due to the reputation of the brand.

“Mercedes-Benz is a worldwide brand, not only for the truck and car market but also as an original engine manufacturer,” he says.

“They’ve been building diesel engines ever since they were around and are a well-respected engine for many machine manufacturers. A lot of equipment comes to Australia fitted with Mercedes-Benz engines.”

In terms of what machinery MercedesBenz industrial engines power, Bernard says there is a large variety, with everything from underground mining and commercial quarrying equipment to drill rigs, excavators, pumps and even generators.

Having slowly integrated the brand into the business, LK Diesel is spreading the word to potential customers who need reliable engines at the heart of their machinery.

“We are the only Melbourne-based Mercedes-Benz industrial engine dealer and one of only a few in Victoria,” Bernard says.

He adds LK Diesel’s appointment as an Isuzu Power Solutions authorised dealer has “opened up a whole new world” for the business, with the capacity to now supply Isuzu power units and generator sets.

“The generators are still filtering in, but they’re starting to build up and we’re getting more inquiries for them,” Bernard says.

“There are potential power issues in summer, so these generators can be an important asset. They’re big enough to run houses and be a backup power source for small government facilities.

“We’re looking forward to getting our name out there and letting people know that we can assist them with engines and generators. We can assist them from little single cylinders up to large industrial V8s.”
