FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome

Muck Runner’s new Pichon slurry tanker range provides new options for farmers in managing effluent. See page 33.

This time of year is always a busy one with field day and industry events. The Farms & Farm Machinery team travelled to two of these recently – specifically FarmFest in Toowoomba and Hort Connections in Adelaide. Plenty of exciting machinery and technology was on display at both of these, with our event wraps in this edition showcasing just some of the highlights. Our Hort Connections coverage will continue in coming editions with profiles of this year’s award winners, while it was great to see such a positive mood at FarmFest. With agriculture facing many of the same economic issues as Australia more broadly, it was noticeable how big the crowds were at FarmFest and how many exhibitors were reporting strong sales and enquiries from those enjoying the Queensland sunshine. Looking ahead, the National Renewables in Agriculture conference and expo will be held in Orange, New South Wales next month. You may recall a profile on cherry grower Mike Casey from a previous edition, who shared his story at last year’s conference about turning his orchard electric. An insight into which farmers will be speaking at this year’s event forms part of our preview. The Farms & Farm Machinery team is also excited to attend the Tractor & Machinery Association’s annual conference in Sydney as the official media partner. This key event brings the machinery industry together for important conversations and networking and we will have plenty of post-event coverage in subsequent editions. Back to this edition, and our cover story highlights CFMOTO. The utility vehicle manufacturer has introduced a new ATV range and we hear about the performance and comfort upgrades which the company says can make daily farming tasks including livestock management easier. Two of our customer testimonials this month

focus on people who are new to farming, but whose carefully considered purchases have proven to be winners. Both located in Queensland, one farmer bought a Rata Equipment Power Claw for management of his 500 acres before retirement and has called the product “irreplaceable”, while the other is a couple whose McCormick X5.110M tractor from Clark Equipment has helped them prepare their property for both cattle and a glamping business. Separately, Clark Equipment has debuted an all-electric zero-turn mower and we hear about what this will bring to customers. This edition also has a detailed look at Muck Runner’s new Pichon slurry tanker range, which aims to make centrifugal technology more accessible to Australian farmers. A potato farmer shares why partnering with Achmea Farm Insurance has helped with his sustainability goals and long-term thinking, while we also celebrate the latest crop of AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship recipients and share their individual goals. Other machinery placed in the spotlight includes Cobra Equipment’s expanding Shantui wheel loader range, Dieci Australia’s feature-packed Haymaster 40.7 telehandler, and the electric-powered pumps available through Veldonas. We also highlight Bourgault Australia’s early order program, share the speaker lineup for September’s Bulk Handling Technical Conference, while WAFarmers CEO Trevor Whittington looks at the lessons to be learned from recent fuel and fertiliser shortages.

ON THE COVER

Off -road EVOLUTION CFMOTO’s all-new ATV range offers serious performance and comfort upgrades which make daily farming tasks easier, including livestock management

The sheer size of Australian farming properties means it’s often a challenge to move between paddocks. While farmers can use utes and four-wheel drives, these larger vehicles struggle to access hard-to-reach areas. Using an ATV is one solution, providing both the speed required to travel over long distances quickly and the ability to go off-road. This is an important consideration for a range of daily farming tasks, including rounding up livestock, inspecting crops, general property maintenance, and even towing small implements. For these reasons, many farmers are turning to CFMOTO’s comprehensive ATV range – which is distributed by Mojo Motorcycles.

10

Farms & Farm Machinery

“ATVs sit in a category of their own – highly versatile and hard to replace for specific tasks on the farm,” CFMOTO off-road marketing manager Stephen Carrington says. “They’re a simple, efficient transport solution that saves time and effort across day-to-day farm work, and they can take you just about anywhere on a farm, which is what makes them such a valuable tool. “ATVs are easy to use, highly manoeuvrable and make managing livestock far more efficient.” Next generation Already a proven success, Australian farmers across the country have made CFMOTO’s CFORCE 400 and 520 ATVs industry staples.

Building on this and making them even better, the company has launched its all-new GEN4 ATV work range with the CFORCE C4, C4 EPS and C5 EPS models. Representing a complete redesign of the popular 400 and 520 models, the GEN4 lineup offers a step up in the level of performance, comfort, and everyday work capability, while showcasing CFMOTO’s meaningful advancements in engineering, technology, and real-world usability. Purpose-built to meet the changing demands of Australian farmers, the new range introduces significant improvements across every key area, from powertrain and chassis to ergonomics, serviceability, and rider-focused enhancements. At the core of this lineup is a completely

re-engineered engine configuration, delivering stronger low-to-mid range torque, smoother operation, and improved efficiency. Combined with dual balance shafts and reduced internal resistance, Carrington says the new engines provide a more refined ride with less vibration and reduced rider fatigue, which is critical for long working days. An all-new CFMOTO in-house designed continuously variable transmission (CVT) has also been introduced for smoother and more predictable low-speed control. This enables consistent operation at low speeds of around seven kilometres per hour, making the ATVs ideal for stock work, towing, and navigating tight or technical terrain.

Model overview Each ATV in the GEN4 range brings its own benefits to suit varying farming requirements. Starting with the C4, this model is described as a durable workhorse, featuring a 408.8cc, 33hp (24.6kW) engine, steel wheels, and racks, delivering the reliability farmers expect while still being a cost-effective option. Building on this, the C4 EPS offers the same performance capabilities with the addition of electric power steering, alloy wheels and a 2,500lb (1,134kg) winch for improved comfort, control and versatility. Stepping up again, the C5 EPS is the flagship model, delivering an increase in power with a 498cc, 39hp (29kW) engine, while including all the features of the C4 EPS. Additionally, it offers premium

racking over the C4 models, larger 25-inch tyres, and handguards. Work capability has been significantly enhanced for all these models, with a 33 per cent increase in rack capacity – 40kg front and 80kg rear – combined with a 612kg towing capacity, allowing farmers to carry more and do more in fewer trips. Integrated tie-down points and the CF-Connect accessory system provide flexible, secure cargo solutions for a wide range of applications. Carrington says the addition of front tow hooks, which is standard across the range, further improves versatility for recovery and utility tasks. “The front tow hooks provide a new anchoring point with the same rating as the tow bar,” he says.

ON THE COVER

“This gives farmers more flexibility when it comes to recovery, towing or securing loads. Whether you’re pulling equipment, assisting another vehicle, or working in tight or awkward terrain, having rated front anchor points adds another level of versatility on the farm.” All day comfort and safety Since farmers using the ATVs will most likely be spending long days out in the elements, CFMOTO’s new range has been designed to reduce rider fatigue and improve control over extended periods. This is achieved through a narrower mid-section design, reducing the leg grip width by approximately one-third. Increased seat cushioning, refined ergonomics, and updated controls all contribute to a more comfortable and natural riding position, Carrington says. Suspension travel has also been increased to 210mm front and 235mm The new GEN4 ATV range represents a complete redesign of CFMOTO’s popular 400 and 520 models

rear, delivering improved ride quality and stability across rough and uneven terrain. Additionally, all models feature updated styling and LED dot matrix lighting, including a reverse light – a first for CFMOTO ATVs – to enhance visibility and safety in low-light conditions. A 5.9-inch (15cm) digital display, along with USB and 12V power outlets also come as standard. With farmers’ safety being the priority, the ATVs meet Stage Two requirements of the Consumer Goods (Quad Bike) Safety Standard and come with a Quadbar operator protection device (OPD), which is fitted by the dealer at pre-delivery. On top of this, Carrington says the new range delivers improved lateral stability compared to the previous generation, thanks to a wider stance and lower centre of gravity – giving farmers more confidence when operating across uneven or challenging terrain. The ownership experience has also

been improved, as the GEN4 range has extended 2,000km service intervals and easier maintenance access, reducing downtime and running costs. Trusted support Trusted by Australian farmers since 2005, CFMOTO continues to strengthen its position in the agricultural and rural market, with the new GEN4 ATV lineup being evidence of this. The full ATV range is backed by a two-year factory warranty and supported by CFMOTO’s nationwide network of over 80 authorised dealers. “If CFMOTO hasn’t been on your radar, now’s the time to take a closer look,” Carrington says. “These GEN4 ATV models are built on an all-new platform, featuring enhanced technology and refined engineering — representing a true evolution of the trusted CFORCE 400 and 520.” Now is the perfect time to visit a local dealer and discover first-hand what CFMOTO can do for your farm.

Robert Brzeski has used his Power Claw for land preparation work

Multi tasker Rata Equipment’s Power Claw has been the perfect investment for a Queensland property owner preparing 500 acres of land for his retirement Farming might still be a new experience for Robert Brzeski, but he has already found an “irreplaceable tool” in the form of Rata Equipment’s Power Claw. After spending nearly four decades working as a builder in Brisbane, Brzeski purchased a 500 acre property between Toowoomba and Warwick so he could get out of the city for his retirement. Wanting to utilise his skills and build his own house rather than buying a property with an established house, the search meant he ended up with a parcel of land much bigger than the 50 to 100 acres he had initially planned on. While he is excited about the opportunities this will present, it has also meant considerable amounts of debris needs to be cleaned. This is where Rata Equipment’s Power Claw has come into its own.

Built strong Rata Equipment’s Power Claw is an implement which farmers across Australia, including Brzeski, have praised for its versatility and have discovered far more uses than originally intended. Easily fitting on to popular machinery types such as tractors, telehandlers and skid steer loaders, it offers the same capabilities as a four-in-one bucket with the added advantage of being able to grip both large logs and loose debris to clean up paddocks. The Power Claw is available in a variety of working widths to ensure farmers with small machinery can still experience its benefits, while those with larger and more powerful machinery can turbocharge its capabilities. Brzeski purchased the 2.6m wide Power Claw, which is the largest size sold as a

standard model by Rata Equipment. With Brzeski having purchased a larger property than he first intended to, he did exactly the same with both the Power Claw and his tractor – figuring that owning more powerful machinery would open up extra opportunities. “If you just budget small and buy small tools, then you’re limited to what you can do,” he says. “If you’re open to options and buy big, like I bought the big Rata claw, it meant I was able to do other jobs with it. With a small claw, I wouldn’t be able to do these. “I went big because those machines are made to work hard so the bigger machines and bigger tools work harder. “I talked to my wife and she said we’ve got a big tractor, so we might as well get the biggest one we can because it will work well and we’ll use it.”

Picking up debris is a significant benefit for farmers such as Brzeski

Rata’s Power Claw has the strength to easily handle large logs

Robert Brzeski describes his Rata Equipment Power Claw as an “irreplaceable tool”

16

Farms & Farm Machinery

Plenty of potential Brzeski’s grandparents lived on a farm, but he had never done so before making the decision to purchase the 500 acre property during the Covid-19 pandemic. He describes the property as “nice and green and lush, and very heavily wooded, but not bushy”, saying it was originally zoned by his local council as outback. While he still lives in the city and plans to move fully to the new property by the end of this year once his building work has officially wrapped up, life on the land is not a completely foreign concept. He already lives on a one-acre block and has had some experience driving tractors before – albeit without owning one – and has been able to make the move to his retirement property progressively. This has also allowed plenty of time for him to put the Power Claw through its paces and discover its capabilities. “I just use it for a bit of earthmoving but mainly it is just raking the ground and cleaning up, moving logs also,” he says. “The Rata claw is just perfect for picking up logs and moving them and putting them in position. “Originally it was just to move logs and debris mainly, because on the fence line I have got hundreds of cubic metres of trees that are lying there that need to be gotten rid of, otherwise they’re just going to rot there. “I use it for about four or five different jobs – that Rata claw is on the tractor just about all the time.” Finding unexpected uses for Rata’s Power Claw has been a common theme among Australian farmers, with Brzeski being no exception. “Cleaning debris is one thing, but I was able to utilise the Claw to do other things, even earthmoving,” he says.

Happy customer Brzeski has also been impressed with the service he has received from Rata Equipment. One unexpected bonus was its delivery on a stand, which was designed for easy transportation but has also been the perfect place for him to rest the Power Claw on while not in use.

Images: Rata Equipment

“I use it after the bulldozer to remove any debris that is hidden underground so it doesn’t obstruct my ploughing or raking with any other implements. “The four-in-one bucket picks up too much debris so as I’m picking up the soil, I rake the soil up and just pick up what I need. “I was also able to put it in front of the tractor and rake the ground before I do my harrowing. “I basically use it as a shallow plough, just submerging the Rata claw probably 100mm to 150mm underground. “I do that at the front and behind me I pull a harrow and the harrow levels everything up – in one day I did about 10 acres.”

The Power Claw is made using high tensile steel to ensure its strength

He was also happy with Rata’s followup after his purchase, adding he did not originally expect the same level of care with an implement as with a major purchase like a tractor or car. “I wasn’t expecting too much follow-up but I’ve had a couple of phone calls from them, which was very nice,” he says. “They were asking how the machinery works, and at this moment it’s a pretty robust piece of steel, so there’s not many things that can break on it, except the wear and tear.” All of this adds up to the Power Claw

being a piece of equipment which Brzeski has been so happy with that he is spreading the word, including sending videos of it in action to a friend who was brought up on a farm in South Africa. “Without it, I’m limited to what I can do and now I don’t even look back,” he says. “I would be more than happy to buy it again because it is just an irreplaceable tool for me.” Rata Equipment’s Power Claw can be viewed online at www.rataequipment.com

Haymaster 40.7’s raw specifications, along with its four-cylinder engine that produces 125hp (93kW). Two of its standout features are manoeuvrability and compactness, along with a narrow turning radius that allows for work in tight spaces. Combined with precision and promptness in its response to controls, Dieci says the result is a fluid machine that

will “guarantee exceptional work comfort in complete safety”. Perfectly precise Ease of operation has been at the forefront when Dieci designed the Haymaster 40.7. Its high-efficiency steering system provides what is described as an “effortless handling experience”, with the steering remaining responsive even under heavy

Telehandlers are strengthening their foothold in the Australian agricultural market for their versatility, enabling farmers to complete a variety of important jobs. While this versatility is important, sometimes a selection of specialised features is required for a particular industry – which is where Dieci’s Haymaster 40.7 comes into its own. Hay and fodder management are this machine’s forte, with Dieci having designed it to excel in the challenging conditions experienced by those in this sector. “The Haymaster 40.7 is designed with Australian farming conditions in mind, featuring a double reversible fan fitted to the engine cooling system and high velocity cab mounted condenser fans to help maintain performance in dusty, high-temperature environments,” Dieci Australia’s national sales manager Bob Mules says. A four-tonne lift capacity and 7m maximum lift height give insight into the

load conditions. Using the Powershift transmission, combined with the right work mode, enables easy manoeuvring. The Powershift transmission is perfectly suited to long-distance travel, Dieci adds, making it ideal for efficiently moving between paddocks while maintaining smooth and reliable performance. An inching pedal provides further control, with this vital feature allowing travel speed to either momentarily slow down or completely stop – while still offering maximum power to boom functions. This helps to increase precision and productivity during delicate operations, giving further evidence of the Haymaster 40.7’s capabilities in tight spaces. Combining the electronic inching pedal and accelerator means it is possible to move the telehandler forward in a slow and controlled way, even with the boom at maximum height. “With a Powershift transmission capable of speeds up to 40km/h, impressive towing force and exceptional steering responsiveness, the Haymaster 40.7 allows farmers to move efficiently between tasks and fields enhancing productivity and performance,” Mules says. The Haymaster 40.7’s towing force is 8,200daN, along with a pull-out force of 6,000daN, giving operators confidence the Haymaster 40.7 can handle heavy duty jobs. A Load Limiter Device analyses vehicle stability in real time and prevents any aggravating movements when preset safety limits are reached. A Deadman sensor, combined with an operator presence sensor in the seat, prevents accidental operation and gives another layer of safety assurance. The Haymaster 40.7 also features a four-in-one hydraulic control distributor-single joystick which can fully operate the boom, and it also features proportional and simultaneous controls and easy and practical direction control. Industry suited As a specialised telehandler for hay and fodder management, there are several examples which Dieci highlights of its practical benefits for Australian farmers. It is capable of lifting and moving large and heavy items, meaning farmers can move their hay and fodder from field stacks into either storage or mixers during livestock feeding operations. Efficiency is the key with the Haymaster 40.7’s operations, whether it is quickly placing hay into feeders or mixers, or efficiently loading trucks with cereals, manure or produce.

A 7m lift height makes the Haymaster 40.7 a versatile machine

Dieci says it is also an ideal unit for distributing feed, cleaning stables, and transporting manure. A 146-degree fork swivelling angle rotation has been specifically designed to increase the operating arc, particularly when unloading with the boom raised. The boom is made of high resistance steel and features load sensing and flow sharing distributors for more simultaneous movements during operation. It also features Dieci’s patented single compensation cylinder, which is located inside the lifting ram and ensures the boom’s load is balanced at all times. Other important and impressive features of the Haymaster 40.7 include two distinct radiators respectively dedicated to water and oil cooling, along with numerous thermal sensors which protect the propulsion system against any problems caused by overheating. Like any successful agricultural machine, the Haymaster 40.7 has been designed around providing an excellent

operator experience and Mules believes it has achieved what Australian farmers are looking for. “Operator comfort and visibility play a huge role in productivity on a farm,” he says. “The Haymaster 40.7 delivers with panoramic cab views, Australian-designed air conditioning, air suspension seating and intuitive joystick controls that make long hours in the cab more comfortable, less fatiguing and ultimately more productive.” The Haymaster 40.7 complements other industry-specific Dieci telehandlers such as the Poultry Pro, Piggery Pro and Cotton Pro, while the manufacturer’s range also includes other models designed for agriculture such as the Agri Farmer, Agri Plus, Agri Max and Agri Pivot. With a 103hp engine, the X5.110M is an ideal mid-sized tractor

First serve Investing in a McCormick X5.110M from Clark Equipment has been perfect for a Queensland couple who are new to farming Alistair and Jocelyn McEwan’s journey into tractor ownership combines family history on the land with a fresh adventure. The husband and wife began their farming life earlier this year in Queensland’s Numinbah Valley, located south-west of Gold Coast. They have taken on a portion of a 170 hectare block which has been in Jocelyn’s family for about 90 years, with a river running through it and rainforest on either side of the valley. With an idyllic environment and close proximity to the city, the McEwans have spotted an opportunity to complement their traditional farming with a foray into the growing agritourism market. “We’re starting up a small glamping business, which involves a number of glamping tents and a couple of cottages,” Jocelyn says. “We’re renovating a couple of cottages that are on the property and we’re going to run cattle.

20

Farms & Farm Machinery

“It’s a lot of work, but very exciting and that’s why we bought the tractor, because we needed to maintain the paddocks and slash.” Careful consideration After plenty of research, the tractor which Alistair and Jocelyn purchased was a McCormick X5.110M from Clark Equipment. Powered by a 103hp (76kW) four-cylinder Perkins engine, it boasts other impressive features such as 48 x 16 hydraulic powershuttle transmission, three sets of rear hydraulic outlets and a quick-hitch three-point linkage with external raise and lower control. McCormick says plenty of design care and consideration has gone into the Italian-made tractor, with improved operator visibility and comfort being prioritised despite the tractor’s compact overall size. Its engine power sits in the middle

of McCormick’s local range, making it ideal for farmers such as the McEwans requiring more grunt than hobby farmers but without the daily needs of broadacre growers. It is also built for easy operations with a wide variety of implements, something which the McEwans have already experienced benefits from. They purchased the tractor with an implements package from Clark Equipment that included a front-end loader, four-in-one bucket, Daken 2.1m contractor slasher and Daken 2.5 tonne pallet forks. Alistair says compatibility with the implements they would need formed a major part of the research process and was one of many reasons why they chose McCormick. “We settled on around 100 horsepower, mid-sized tractor and chose the McCormick because I think it offered us everything we needed,” he says. “We wanted a front-end loader and bucket and also a big robust slasher because we’ve got fairly mixed country here. “We’ve got mountain country, river and then open pastures and paddock, so it needed to be quite a robust one.

“The slasher has been outstanding and allowed us to get onto country that is pretty overgrown, so that’s worked really well.” The McEwans’ property currently has cattle on it, meaning the primary focus of their current work is developing a paddock plan. This will enable them to get the pasture to where they want it to be, Alistair says, including taming some of the weeds that have grown up over recent years, something which will also be important when they introduce the glamping business. “We know there’s a huge demand for nature-based tourism up in this part of the world, so we’re really going to be making the property available to people to come on and enjoy that in a working farm environment,” he says. Handled with care While Jocelyn has been around tractors since childhood due to her family owning the property, the McCormick X5.110M purchase marks their first experience of tractor ownership. Service during both the purchase process and afterwards is important for all tractor buyers but takes on an extra

dimension for inexperienced owners requiring additional guidance. The McEwans have been “blown away” by the service from Tim Hoffman at Clark Equipment’s Brisbane branch, describing the handover as brilliant and praising his ongoing contact and support. “Tim came and spent about four or five hours with us initially when the tractor was delivered, just teaching us how it all

worked and what its capabilities were,” Jocelyn says. “He was really patient and diligent in making sure we understood the tractor and he was happy to spend as much time as we needed to get comfortable with the tractor, which was invaluable.” While the McEwans have only had the McCormick X5.110M for a short period, another major consideration during their pre-purchase research was

about the ease of its ongoing service. “Talking to lots of farmers and people around, they just say the service is so important and being able to get people out when you need them,” Jocelyn says. “Tim has been so responsive and the service guys have come up and fixed any teething problems straight away. “They are kitted out with everything and knowing the service is there and available is also quite important.” Happy experience Another of McCormick’s selling features across the range – which is also

applicable to the X5.110M – is providing tractors which represent strong value for money. One of the keys to this is offering important technology to enhance daily operations while keeping the unit itself simple and therefore reducing the numbers of ways it can break down. For Alistair, this was one of the many things which first drew him to the McCormick brand and is a feature which has also been noticeable during his time using the tractor. “McCormick has a really solid reputation as a brand and it also offered us really

good value for the price point we were looking at compared to other models in its category,” he says. “There’s enough grunt in the tractor and it’s very stable and what I really like is it’s got enough kit in the cabin but it’s not overloaded with technology. “For someone who is new to tractors, I think that’s a really important point – it’s simple and easy to use and yet it’s got everything that you need in terms of range, horsepower, torque and stability.” Alistair believes this quality, along with the Clark Equipment service, means McCormick’s market presence will continue to grow – something which has him confident about the eventual resale value of the X5.110M. “We think we’re going to see more of those types of models coming on to the market, which will only be good for future resale,” he says. “I think they’re doing a great job through Clark and we’re absolutely delighted with the choice we’ve made. We’re racking up the hours on the tractor already and we’ve hardly been off it.” McCormick tractors are distributed in Australia by Clark Equipment and the full range can be viewed online at www.clarkfarmequipment.com.au

“We’re moving a few red McCormick tractors and our Bobcat zero-turn mowers have also been a huge hit this year. “We’ve some great new products coming out from Bobcat in utility vehicles and new tractor models coming through which we’re pushing really hard this year.”

“It stands out for its size and visibility in the cabin and it has also got frame levelling.” Merlo dealer Allclass was also represented at the company’s site, with the P50.18 telehandler being another machine on display. “This telehandler is probably more suited to heavy construction,” Dransfield says. “This one’s a bit of a beast and is good for larger scale work.” Clark Equipment Clark Equipment packed plenty of machinery into its space at FarmFest. The McCormick and Bobcat brands which form the core of its range were prominent, with various machinery types including tractors, telehandlers and mowers catching the eye. The Clark team was kept busy with customer enquiries across the range and the interest is only set to ramp up at future field days with several exciting additions having freshly joined the range. “FarmFest 2026 has been great,” Clark Equipment national product manager David Knoke says. Hercules Skid steers, wheel loaders and excavators were among the popular machines for Hercules Machinery Group during FarmFest. The Brisbane-based business had a popular stand during the event, with sales representatives Ian Schurmann and Steven Ragenovich constantly in demand with customers. Ragenovich says the compact track loaders, which have been a new addition to the Hercules offering, were a popular attraction. The range includes the T85, which features an 85hp (62kW) Kubota engine and features a 1.1 tonne operation load. Another new addition at the event was the HMG38E mini excavator, which has a 24hp (18kW) Kubota engine, along with zero-tail swing design for confined spaces and a spacious operator area. Ragenovich says these new machines are an exciting addition to the Hercules range, with the Queensland field day season being an ideal time to launch them to customers. JCB A wide selection of JCB machinery gave dealer Wideland Group plenty to showcase. The dealer described the opening day of FarmFest 2026 as being a “fantastic start”, with crowds continuing to stop at many of the JCB machines. One of the many products on display

The 6080 was one of many tractors which Mahindra showed to customers

Kuhn’s Julien Ballu and Brendan Disson with the SB 1290 iD baler

Mahindra As the world’s largest tractor seller by volume, it is little surprise Mahindra had an extensive selection of impressive machines for FarmFest visitors to browse. Represented by local dealer Toowoomba Mahindra, the tractors on show provided an insight into the market segments which Mahindra targets – particularly the 25hp to 90hp range. One of the models on display was the 6080. Powered by an 80hp engine, this is among the largest tractors manufactured by Mahindra. This means superior power in the field, the company says, with excellent fuel efficiency combining with high torque to optimise productivity even in demanding conditions. A rear lifting capacity of 2,900kg also makes it ideal for working with heavy implements. Mahindra also showed the 6060 4WD model, a 56hp tractor that forms part of its utility range and is suited to medium size properties needing regular maintenance and ground clearing. Kuhn Kuhn says the presence of its SB 1290 iD baler at FarmFest was driven by the changing needs of the market. The iD in its model name stands for ‘intelligent density’, with Kuhn saying it can produce 120cm x 90cm bales with up to 25 per cent higher bale density in

tough dry straw conditions compared to conventional large square balers. This is thanks to its patented Twinpact double plunger system, while other upgrades to the machine include the transmission, driveline and bale channel. Kuhn’s baler product specialist Julien Ballu says the baler had been well received, with the specific unit on display at the event having already been sold to a customer in the Queensland town of Roma. “We had some good enquiries, especially for the hay exporters,” Ballu says. “The market is growing to high-density balers, and that’s what they’re looking for.” Tyre trio Tyre brands Maxam, Alliance and Maxxis sat alongside each other during the event, enabling farmers to browse from a wide selection. Among the highlights at the stand was Maxam’s AgriXtra, the product which forms the core of its agricultural offering. Suited to tractors and harvesters along with implements such as seeders and planters, Maxam says the AgriXtra’s approval for fitment by major OEMs in late Redback Agri’s range includes weedwipers, spreaders, harrows and arena groomers

2022 marked a significant step forward in the company’s growth. Alliance also focused heavily on the Queensland market with its newly-released 420 sugarcane tyres. Features include hexagonal step blocks for uniform contact with the ground and better grip, while an open groove design provides better cleaning and reduced spillage in soft soil. Tie bars connect the blocks to reduce stress, the company adds, while ensuring high speed stability and durability. Redback Agri Strong interest across its product range was reported by Redback Agri. As a generational family business that sells agricultural and equine equipment, Redback knows what farmers need and aims to provide service to match. Harrows, spreaders, arena groomers and weedwipers all form a major part of Redback Agri’s product offering, with these all available at FarmFest. Its weedwiper uses a wick system to apply herbicide to only the taller weeds rising above the pasture, rather than spraying everything in its path. This protects the underlying “precious growth”, the company says, while adding

that many farmers have reported their weedwiper as becoming hot property among neighbours. Redback’s harrows are built to be robust and reliable, being made from high-grade steel and delivering consistent results for farmers and contractors thanks to an “aggressive triangle section [which] breaks up heavy clumps, muck and dead thatch”. Massey Ferguson One of Massey Ferguson’s flagship tractors stood out for both its size and sleek design. The MF 9S.400 was only introduced to Australian customers late last year following its global launch in 2023, making it a fresh attraction for FarmFest attendees. The MF 9S.400 is the second largest in the 9S range, boasting an 8.4L, six-cylinder engine that produces 400hp plus a 660L fuel tank to keep farmers running for longer. Built for heavy-duty work, it also provides a turning radius of 5.75m for manoeuvrability while a spacious cabin with 6.6sqm of glass means operators can work in both comfort and safety. “As well as continuing to deliver

FlipScreen One thing most farmers deal with every day is the need to move material around. FlipScreen helps machines to screen and separate material on the spot, allowing it to be processed and for clumps to be removed rather than constantly shifted around. It is adaptable for multiple machinery types, with FlipScreen national sales manager Josh Hartley highlighting the EX144 during FarmFest. “This is our excavator model,” he says, adding that it is also ideal for high-capacity material processing in sectors such as construction in addition to agriculture. The EX144 is designed for excavators between 29 and 35 tonnes, offering a 1.4 cubic metre scoop volume and 6.5 square metre screen area. Pichon’s new Slurry Centrifugal tanker range is now available from Muck Runner

Greater options Muck Runner’s new Pichon slurry tanker range aims to make centrifugal technology more accessible to Australian farmers Earlier this year, Muck Runner launched Pichon’s new Slurry Centrifugal (SC) tanker range, offering Australian farmers and contractors even more choice in machinery which can help apply dairy effluent back on farm as a natural fertiliser. Offering a different filling and emptying technology, the SC range is equipped with a centrifugal pump combined with a hydro-ejector system. This has been adapted to the diversity of agricultural effluents and productivity requirements instead of a vacuum pump which is found on Pichon’s standard SV range of tankers. Muck Runner director Tom Paltridge says centrifugal pumps operate by converting rotational energy from a motor or engine into kinetic energy in the fluid, which is then transformed into pressure to move the liquid through piping systems. “The versatility, high flow rate capability, and ability to handle a range of fluid types make centrifugal pumps suitable for numerous applications,” he says.

“A benefit of this system over a vacuum pump is a lighter net weight of the tanker as the whole tanker does not have to be a pressure vessel, due to the vacuum only being created in the ejector’s pipe system. This can result in reduced manufacturing costs for the actual tank part of the machine.” The centrifugal technology has been developed from Pichon’s parent company, the Samson Group, which has closely aligned the Pichon SC range with its own Samson TG takers to strengthen its dual brand strategy. Paltridge says the aim of Pichon’s new SC tanker range is to make centrifugal technology more accessible to customers while maintaining high levels of efficiency and reliability. “The system used by Samson is relatively expensive compared to the vacuum system used in Pichon tankers,” he says. “In the SC range, Pichon have streamlined the technology to make the range more cost effective and

therefore more affordable to a wider range of customers.” With Samson able to manufacture the SC range at the Pichon factory in France, Paltridge adds it allows both brands to optimise development and industrialisation costs, while delivering high-performance, reliable and cost-effective machines. Welcome addition The new Pichon SC slurry tanker range features a lighter overall design to maximise the payload capacity. This is reflected in the range’s available capacities from 15,000 to 24,000 litres, providing larger volume options over the standard SV range, which is offered in capacities from 6,600 to 21,000 litres. Paltridge says the larger volume tankers will be a welcome addition for many Australian farmers and contractors. “Being such a vast landscape, one of the key factors in effluent management is travel time from slurry pit or pond to the paddock,” he says.

All models can be fitted with a range of application attachments

MACHINERY

“Larger tankers can help mitigate this by reducing the number of times the tractor and tanker has to return to the pond to refill.” Some of the key features of the SC models include hydraulic suspension, highly durable internal and external surface treatment, plus recessed wheels which allow for larger tyres. All models can also be fitted with a range of application attachments, including trailing shoe booms, drip hose booms, as well as disc and tine injectors. Additionally, a new telescopic pump tower can be fitted with the SC models, helping farmers optimise their filling operations with high flow rates, precise positioning and easy access to slurry pits – even in tight spaces. The aim of the pump tower design is to significantly reduce manoeuvring time, improve operator comfort and increase efficiency when handling thicker slurry. This is achieved through the offset right-side mounting, which improves

reach into deep or distant slurry pits, while the dual-joint hydraulic arm offers greater manoeuvrability. The single telescopic function also ensures compact transport and a long telescopic reach of up to 2,360mm. Paltridge says he can’t wait to bring one of the new pump towers into Australia and may even have one on his own farm first to test it for Australian conditions. “Muck Runner can cater to all farming requirements – from the smallest 6,000 litre tanker in the Pichon range to massive 35,000 litre tankers in the Samson range, and the most basic to the most complicated machine and any version in between,” he says. “Let us help you find your happy spot when it comes to effluent management – one that suits your needs, your budget and your objectives.” For more information on the Pichon SC slurry tanker range, visit muckrunner.com.au or call Tom Paltridge on 0419 851 543.

Farms & Farm Machinery

Increasing pressure to maximise productivity, improve input efficiency and manage labour availability is driving demand for equipment that delivers both precision and reliability. Bourgault’s extensive seeding lineup has been developed with these challenges in mind. From the 4420 Deep Knife Drill and 3335 ParaLink Hoe Drill through to the ParaLink Coulter Drill range and 8000 and 9000 Series Air Carts, the EOP provides an opportunity to secure the right solution ahead of time. Under control While equipment design remains a key part of improving seeding performance,

technology is becoming increasingly important in helping operators maximise the value of their investment. The company’s latest innovation – Bourgault Intelligent Control (BiC) – is a new control platform that brings machine management, diagnostics and operational data together in a single connected system. Built around a modern touchscreen interface, BiC consolidates machine control, diagnostics and performance monitoring into a single operating environment. The system has been designed to simplify setup and calibration processes while providing operators with real-time access to machine information during operation.

For Australian growers, a successful seeding season often begins months before the first seed enters the ground. Planning ahead, particularly when it comes to machinery investment, can help growers maximise productivity and enter the season with confidence. That is why Bourgault Australia’s Early Order Program (EOP) continues to attract strong interest from growers looking to position themselves for a productive 2027 season. The EOP provides growers and contractors with access to pricing incentives, factory production scheduling and the opportunity to secure their preferred equipment configuration ahead of the 2027 season. For growers, planning ahead is about more than simply securing a machine. Through the EOP, customers can access the full range of factory indent options and specify the equipment, technology and configuration best suited to their operation, ensuring the machine is tailored to their requirements well before seeding begins. This flexibility is particularly important as Australian farming operations continue to evolve.

Bourgault’s Early Order Program means farmers can lock in their 2027 season investments ahead of time

Bourgault’s Western Australia operations manager Darren Brouwer says the company’s intelligent control system is “user-friendly, intuitive and efficient.” He explains that the system streamlines machine management through a fully wireless, single-screen interface that integrates seamlessly with tractor task controllers, giving operators improved access to operational data and machine control functions. “This integration reduces time spent navigating multiple systems, allowing operators to stay focused on achieving precise seed and fertiliser placement across the paddock,” he says. “We are really looking forward to giving everyone a first look at this during our open days this year.” Growers wanting to see Bourgault’s latest machinery and technology firsthand will have the opportunity to do so at the 2026 Bourgault open days. The first of these events will be held from July 21-22 at Bourgault’s eastern distribution centre, located in Albury (Ettamogah), New South Wales.

The other will take place from July 24-25 at Bourgault’s western distribution centre in Kelmscott, WA. Attendees will be able to explore Bourgault’s seeding and tillage range, speak with dealers and product specialists, and see the new BiC platform in operation. For those considering machinery upgrades ahead of 2027, Bourgault’s message is straightforward: planning ahead can provide greater choice, earlier delivery and access to the latest innovations across Bourgault’s seeding and tillage range. With valuable pricing incentives available through Bourgault’s early order program, growers and contractors have an opportunity to secure the equipment and technology they need to hit the ground running next season. EVENT NEWS

Attendees will be able to hear from farmers with real-world experience of using renewable energy. Image: Prime Creative Media

Next wave Australian farmers finding that renewables are delivering real returns will share their experiences at a national conference next month Volatile commodity prices, rising feed and energy costs, labour shortages and increasingly variable weather conditions are all putting pressure on farm businesses. At the same time, agriculture is being asked to reduce emissions, electrify operations and play a larger role in Australia’s energy transition. For many producers, the challenge is knowing where to start and what actually stacks up commercially. That is the focus of the National Renewables in Agriculture Conference and Expo, being held in Orange, New South Wales, on August 12. The past two conferences have sold out and showcases practical examples from farmers already using renewable energy to cut costs, improve efficiency and create new income streams. This year’s program includes more than 10 farmers sharing experiences with technologies ranging from battery storage and solar-powered irrigation to electric farm vehicles, biofuels, on-farm fertiliser production and bioenergy from chicken litter. Electric boost Dubbo farmer Tom Warren will speak about how he grazes sheep under solar panels and the tax implications of hosting large scale renewable energy developments.

38

Farms & Farm Machinery

Farmer and lawyer Claire Booth will also cover risk and insurance implications for farmers and neighbours of solar and wind developments. Francis Clark will share his experience of installing New South Wales’ first bi-directional electric vehicle charging systems on his Southern Tablelands farm. Clark was not just looking for a new way to get around but was exploring how a

vehicle battery could become an integral part of a farm’s energy system. Clark, who runs around 50 Angus breeding cattle near Tarago, was an early adopter of vehicle-to-home technology and has spent more than two years using a Nissan Leaf electric vehicle to store solar energy and supply power back to his home and, when market conditions are favourable, export electricity to the grid.

Chris Freney will discuss his plans to create revenue from agricultural waste. Image: National Renewables in Agriculture

“Most people think of an electric vehicle as just transport, but the battery can do much more than that,” Clark says. “The battery in the Leaf is around four times larger than a typical home battery, and you get the wheels for free.” Working with wholesale energy retailer Amber, he has been able to take advantage of electricity price spikes by exporting power when demand is high. “In the early years, the price spikes were what made the economics work,” he says. “That’s where the real value was, I could make a few hundred dollars a night.” Clark’s experience has highlighted both the opportunities and challenges of emerging energy technologies. Changes to feed-in tariffs over recent years have altered the economics of exporting solar energy, reinforcing the importance of battery storage and flexible energy management. Looking ahead, Clark believes the next major opportunity for agriculture will come as larger electric machinery enters the market. “I don’t think it will be long before large electric tractors become available. The interesting question is how farmers use those batteries when the tractor isn’t working,” he says. He points to developments in the mining sector, particularly the move toward electrified haul trucks, as a sign of what is coming for agricultural machinery. “For farmers considering electrifying vehicles and equipment, it’s worth thinking beyond transport,” he says. “The battery itself can become an important farm asset.” Packed lineup Tom Gunthorpe is another speaker and is a mixed livestock, cattle and fine wool breeder, from Kangiara in New South Wales. He hosts turbines and worked with neighbours early on to negotiate and set up a decommissioning fund for the end of the life of the turbines. “Our business is producing food and fibre and now we have a new business producing energy,” Gunthorpe says. “We run 700 head of cattle, 1,500 sheep and have nine turbines.” He describes the decommissioning fund as being for peace of mind, and says it helps to eliminate any financial exposure for landholders. “However it’s a long time before these things will be decommissioned,” he says. “The infrastructure could last 100 years with correct maintenance so

there’s no reason why these things can’t just keep going.” One of our primary benefits from the wind farm for Gunthorpe is drought proofing. The passive income makes a huge difference to the viability of his business and will help future generations such as his daughter, to take over. He believes there needs to be a framework that the industry follows for decommissioning so other farmers can take up the benefits as well if it suits their farm. Ambitious project Gippsland poultry farmer Chris Freney, whose business C-Loop is developing an ambitious anaerobic digestion (AD) project, will talk about how agricultural waste can be transformed into multiple revenue streams. Freney’s system will convert poultry litter into renewable electricity, industrial gases and valuable agricultural inputs, turning what was once a disposal challenge into a diversified business opportunity. “The first revenue stream comes from renewable electricity,” he says. “Methane produced through the digestion process will fuel an internal combustion engine capable of generating around 8.5MW of dispatchable power. “Approximately half of the electricity will be used on-farm, helping reduce operating costs, while the remainder will be sold into the electricity market.” Importantly, the system is designed to supply power during evening peak

demand periods of 5pm to 11pm when electricity prices are typically highest. The second revenue stream comes from capturing and selling carbon dioxide produced during the digestion process, while the third revenue stream comes from recovering nutrients from the digestion process to support algae and spirulina production, creating natural food colourings. “Together, these multiple income streams have been critical in demonstrating the commercial viability of the project to lenders and investors,” Freney says. Extra events In addition to the main conference on August 12, a farmer-only networking session will be held on the previous afternoon, providing an opportunity for producers to meet speakers, ask questions and discuss projects in an informal setting. For those wanting to see renewable energy systems operating in the real world, optional farm tours on August 13 will visit either a solar-powered winery or the Flyers Creek Wind Farm. For farmers facing rising energy costs and looking for practical ways to improve profitability, the event offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from farmers who are already implementing these technologies and making them work commercially. Registration for the conference can be made by visiting www.renewablesinagconference.com.au

FARMING Achmea Farm Insurance has been Kadwell & Co Gourmet Potatoes’ insurer since 2014. Kadwell & Co Gourmet Potatoes’ Garry Kadwell (left) and Nicole (right) with Achmea Senior Farm Insurance Specialist Gerard Bennett (middle)

Working with the land Achmea Farm Insurance speaks to potato farmer Garry Kadwell, of Kadwell & Co Gourmet Potatoes, about farming, sustainability and long-term thinking “You can make the best laid plans – you’ve got to be quite ready to move with what comes up and adjust as you go,” potato farmer Garry Kadwell says. That mindset shapes the way Garry farms at Kadwell & Co Gourmet Potatoes in Crookwell, New South Wales, adjusting to the season in front of him while planning well ahead. When he spoke with Achmea Farm Insurance – insurer of Kadwell & Co Gourmet Potatoes since 2014 – rain that week had changed his plans. “This rain is going to change the direction of the whole season in a really positive way,” Garry says. This time, the rain meant he could stop irrigating to soften the soil for harvest and get back to digging once the weather cleared. Looking after the land Asked what drives him, Garry says he has wanted to farm since he was a kid. “My purpose before was to expand the farm and get modern machinery and it

was all about production,” he says. “Whereas I feel my purpose now is to help other farmers understand more about working with nature and looking after what we have. We are just custodians of our land, we never own it. “We’re just here for a period of time where we’re the caretaker and I’d like to help other people understand that concept – that if you look after the land, the land will provide back. “It’s sustainability in many ways. It’s about keeping moisture on our farm so we can have production longer in the dry periods. It’s about our animals’ welfare so they can be in sheltered country.” Soil, water and long-term planning “If we get our soil health right, we get our plant and our animals’ health right,” Garry says. The farm tries not to use chemical intervention unless it is a last resort, relying more on manure, compost and integrated pest management to keep things in balance.

“If we get holes in our leaves or we get some superficial damage to the plant, we don’t worry about it,” he says. “At the end of the day, does it really matter?” Garry says his conservation work began with planting trees alongside his grandfather, then expanded to remnant vegetation, wetlands and the river system. According to Garry, around 40 per cent of the farm is now in conservation and ecological zones, which he sees as part of the broader farm system. “It really is pinpointing the natural assets on your farm, enhancing them and taking them to their full potential as part of your entire farming operation,” he says. He describes building a wetland on a natural underground waterway, planting reeds and other vegetation, and watching more frogs and birdlife return. Garry says the headwaters of the Crookwell River once ran red with soil, so he set about slowing the water with shallow ponds, logs and rocks, and fencing stock out so the area could recover.

FARMING

“The river system is probably one of the most vital parts of a farm,” he says. “So, if we can protect that and keep the water clean and clear, that’s a great asset.” Farming at a crossroads Garry says input costs have risen sharply over the past decade, particularly since COVID, while farmgate returns have not kept pace. In his view, that is making it harder for farmers to stay profitable and continue investing in long-term work on the farm. “The hardest part is that the input costs have risen rapidly, but what we produce hasn’t gone up at that same level,” he says. He describes farming as being “at a bit of a crossroads”, and says growers are being pushed to think differently about markets, efficiency and direct relationships. Connections beyond the farmgate Garry also talks about how far removed many people are from where their food comes from. “We’ve lost sight of what’s really important in our agricultural and our food production, and that is nutritious, dense food that has qualities that will enhance our health and our wellbeing,” he says. Working with chefs, including at Aria in Sydney, has given Garry a chance to see what happens to the produce after it leaves the farm. The farm business also includes Garry’s partner, Nicole, who leads the Hampshire Downs sheep side of the operation. Garry describes her as “visionary” and says she has taken an innovative approach, including building direct relationships with processors. Nicole plays a practical role here too, cooking different potato varieties and helping work out their best use with chefs and customers. “It’s nice to see what you’ve produced be cared for, and to see people get excited about it too,” Garry says. For Garry, that connection comes back to purpose – farming has to be about more than production or money. It is about loving the work, looking after the land, and doing it in a way that feels true to the farm. “If you’re doing it well and you’re doing it uniquely, you’ll always find your way forward financially,” he says. The 17.1-tonne Shantui L56-B5 can be fitted with a variety of attachments which suit agricultural jobs

Loader collaboration Cobra Equipment Sales recently hosted a visit from the Shantui factory, including senior engineers and management from the company’s research and development wheel loader division. This was a timely visit, with the recent sale of a new L56-B5 wheel loader by Cobra – the longest running and original Australian Shantui distributor and dealer. Discussions centred around getting feedback on the current Shantui loader range and the needs of the Australian market to inform the design and development of future models. The 17.1-tonne Shantui L56-B5 just sold is powered by a Cummins 214.5hp (160kW) 2,000rpm, Tier 2 engine, has a five-tonne rated load capacity, and was delivered with a hydraulic quick hitch, three-cubic metre bucket, and forks. Cobra Equipment director George Nason says this large-capacity machine is well-suited for farmers and larger

property owners due to the variety of attachments it can be fitted with, including post hole diggers, hay grabs and spikes, as well as stick rakes. “The cost of this sized wheel loader has remained the same as machines for the same size I was selling some 20 years ago,” he says. “The difference being that the new L56 has more features than what was in the market back then – namely a hydraulic quick hitch, forks, auto grease, reverse camera, etc. “These new machines are light-years ahead of the old loaders that I operated as a young man which didn’t have a cabin or a roll over protection system.” Cobra also has the 10-11-tonne wheel loader segment taken care of with the newly released Shantui L36-C5. This model has a 10,300kg operating weight, a 1.8 cubic metre bucket capacity, and a three-tonne lifting capability.

It is powered by a 125hp (92kW) fuel-efficient Weichai engine, has a ZF-type transmission, and a ROPS air-conditioned cabin which can be equipped with a reverse camera. “These sized wloaders can be used in a wide variety of applications,” Nason says. “The new design features a new cab, a new hood layout with a larger access space, as well as an electronic four forward/three reverse transmission, offering an upgraded operator experience.” Broader offering Besides wheel loaders, Cobra also offers the whole range of Shantui equipment which can be beneficial on-farm and around large properties, including excavators, graders, and bulldozers. Nason says Shantui is the world’s largest manufacturer of bulldozers, while also having an extensive portfolio of

Cobra Equipment’s expanding Shantui wheel loader range can help farmers and rural landholders tackle various jobs, from handling heavy loads and moving hay to clearing vegetation

excavators from as small as 1.7-tonnes all the way up to the 200-tonne segment. All machinery offered by Cobra comes with its own respected warranty, which has been giving customers confidence in their equipment purchases since Cobra’s establishment in 2005. Nason adds that Cobra specialises in building configurations to suit its customers’ specific needs. “I bought my first piece of equipment at the age of 19 and with decades in the earthmoving industry, I can use my hands-on experience to make sure the machines we supply suit the customers’ requirements,” he says. This is evidenced through Cobra’s Australian custom-made scrub canopies, stick rakes, and tree spears, which have all been fitted to its equipment to suit local rural conditions. Another specialty of the business is the ability to supply equipment which is considered ‘out of the box’, thanks to its positive relationships built with quality manufacturers in China. “Not all equipment manufactured in China is at the same level,” Nason says. “I have been visiting China for 20 years and that has given me the opportunity to know which companies and factories offer the standards which Australian consumers expect.”

Parts supply Cobra can ensure its customers experience minimal machine downtime thanks to its reliable spare parts department. It currently supplies products across Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and the Pacific Islands, but can also ship worldwide. In addition to selling genuine Shantui parts, Cobra can source and supply difficult-to-find parts for other Chinese equipment makes. Nason says this is particularly important for people who have bought Chinese manufactured equipment from Australian brands which have since closed down. “Once these businesses went broke, they couldn’t support the machines anymore and now there are so many people trying to find parts,” he says. “So, for custom configurations, product support and research, and tenacity in tracking down even the smallest parts, we pride ourselves on offering knowledge and support for our customers.” For more information, visit cobraequipmentsales.com.au or call 07 3379 9419.

Water management Veldonas’ electric-powered pumps are helping Australian farmers improve water management efficiency while reducing operating costs across various applications Water is one of the most valuable resources on any farming operation, making the equipment responsible for moving and distributing it a critical part of daily productivity. From irrigating crops and pastures to protecting from frost and providing a reliable water source for firefighting, pumps are relied upon across a wide range of agricultural applications. As farmers look to increase the efficiency of their water infrastructure, electric-powered pumps are continuing to grow in popularity as an alternative to

conventional diesel-powered systems. Melbourne-based pump supply and water management specialist Veldonas is one business which can build custom units and systems to order, including diesel, power take-off and electric pumps, as well as individual diesel engines and repower units. Veldonas director Gatis Gregors says the shift towards electric pumps is being driven by both operational and financial considerations. “Electric pumps can offer various benefits to farmers – they are more cost

effective than diesel options if grid power is available at off peak rates,” he says. “If electric generators are used, multiple pumps can be running off one generator, saving on individual diesel pump setups.” The company supplies electric pumps in both volume transfer and pressure configurations, enabling farmers to match equipment to their specific irrigation and water transfer requirements. “Volume transfer pumps use less power than pressure pumps,” Gregors says. “They usually only supply water transfer to low pressure situations up to

30 PSI, whereas high pressure pumps can supply up to 160 PSI. “At Veldonas, we can supply various electric volume transfer pumps which can pump from five litres per second up to 400 litres per second at 30 PSI. Our electric pressure pumps can also pump five litres per second up to 400 litres per second at 160 PSI.” Understanding the distinction between the two pump types is important when selecting a system. Volume transfer pumps are designed for moving large quantities of water in lower-pressure applications, making them well suited to flood irrigation or transferring water from rivers. Pressure pumps, however, are intended for applications where water needs to be delivered at higher pressure, including boom and travelling irrigators, sprinkler systems, frost control and fire protection.

Rowe at last year’s Hort Connections and was described as having the most interest the dealer had ever seen in a product. Victorian-based Vin Rowe also represents many other vegetable machinery brands, including AVR, Simon, Baselier, Einbock and Agricola. Massey Ferguson One large piece of machinery shown on the Hort Connections trade show floor was Massey Ferguson’s MF 5S.105 tractor.

Described by the manufacturer as the “ultimate all-rounder”, this is the base model in the manufacturer’s 5S medium horsepower tractor series. A tight 4m turning radius means its agile and nimble nature combines with excellent manoeuvrability, a useful feature for horticulture growers working in tight spaces. Powered by AGCO’s 4.4L, four-cylinder engine producing 105hp, it also offers a choice of three hydraulic systems plus a range of customisations.

John Deere The 5105EN tractor was one which John Deere chose to show off at the Adelaide event. Forming part of the manufacturer’s specialty offering, it caught the eye for being just 2.417m high and 1.478m wide but still offering a 105hp engine. Available in full cabin configuration, it is designed for vineyard, orchard and nursery producers who need to pull heavy carts and handle sprayers, while also being narrow enough to operate through narrow rows or other small spaces. Deere’s PowrReverser transmission also allows users to find the right working range and gear for a variety of tasks, particularly those needing frequent directional changes. eTractor with a range of smart towed attachments including mowers and sprayers. Small and lightweight, these tractor-andtrailer units can operate for up to 10 hours continuously, navigate narrow rows, and work reliably in challenging conditions. Hort Innovation Investment Fund also invested in Agovor earlier this year, with the company raising $3 million from a pre-seed funding round to continue the eTractor’s development. Rynan Smart Agriculture Founder Bryan Nguyen was among those to represent Rynan Smart Agriculture, which aims to use AI-driven agriculture technology for sustainable growth. One product on display was InSentinel, which monitors insect pest populations with statistics ad live data, giving real-time notifications to users on pest populations and environmental conditions. The AI analyses captures images and accurately identifies species of insects, while its weather sensors measure everything from wind direction to rainfall and temperature.

Powered by a solar panel, Rynan says the technology distinguishes between harmful pests and beneficial insects and allows farmers to therefore target their interventions accordingly. Farmgard New Zealand company Farmgard represents a number of machinery brands, with a wide selection of this on display. Among these products were the Valentini Iris 1300 stone burier and Bondioli & Pavesi PTO shafts. They also displayed the Stanhay vacuum seeder, which is designed for quickly planting high density salad crops. The company says thin disc technology maximises accuracy by providing smoother airflow, stronger vacuum and precise seed placement.

MARKET NEWS

Balers were one machinery type to record a sales rise in May. Image: Lurin/stock.adobe.com

Gary Northover is executive director of the Tractor & Machinery Association of Australia (TMA). He can be contacted on (03) 9813 8011 or at gary@tma.asn.au

Tricky times It was another difficult month for agricultural machinery sales during May, the Tractor & Machinery Association says, with improved baler sales being one positive May was another difficult month for tractor sales, as farmer sentiment continues to struggle in the face of supply challenges resulting from the war in Iran. Additionally, we continue to experience dry conditions in parts of New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia and this is further impacting demand. There were around 700 units sold around Australia during May which was 12.5 per cent below the same month last year. This brings the year-to-date figure to a level 9.4 per cent below last year. All states reported declines in the month, aside from Western Australia which remained equal to its May 2025 sales total. The smaller markets of Tasmania and Northern Territory are the only areas which have recorded higher year-to-date sales for 2026 than last year. Except for a small rise of 4.4 per cent in the under 40hp range, all machine size categories were down also. Large tractors of over 200hp experienced the biggest drop in May,

Tractor sales in detail

although this category also remains the closest to 2025 on a year-to-date basis. As we approach the halfway mark of the year, there appears the very real prospect that total sales of around 9,000 units will be recorded for the full year. If this proves to be the case, it would be the lowest reported sales level in the last 15 years for Australia. In other machinery categories, combine harvester sales were again minimal during May. Baler sales enjoyed another strong rise and are now 31 per cent up on a year-to-date basis. Sales of out-front mowers were 15 per

cent down and finally, sales of self-propelled sprayers were down 36 per cent compared to May last year. The annual TMA conference will be held this year at the Brighton Beach Hotel in Sydney on Wednesday July 29. The theme for this year’s event is “building better businesses through people, innovation and strategy” and this year’s speaker lineup has now been announced. To purchase tickets, visit https://tma.asn.au/2026-annualconference/ and you can also follow the TMA on Facebook and LinkedIn.

OPINION

Getting access to valuable urea has been a major challenge for Australian farmers in recent months. Image: Iamporpla/stock.adobe.com

Learning curve WAFarmers CEO Trevor Whittington says long-term lessons need to be heeded from the fuel and fertiliser challenges experienced in recent months On writing this, urea had slipped back below $1,000 a tonne and oil had fallen under US$90 a barrel. The headlines had moved on and the market was once again telling us that everything was under control. Problem solved, move along, nothing to see here. Except that is exactly what people said after the last fertiliser shock, and the one before that, and the one before that. Fertiliser markets have a remarkably consistent habit of reminding us that they are not really fertiliser markets at all. They are energy markets, shipping markets and ultimately geopolitical markets. Every major fertiliser shock of the last 70 years has had its roots in a war, an energy crisis, a trade disruption or a government deciding that normal market rules no longer apply. The names and flags change yet the outcome is remarkably familiar – oil, gas, freight and fertiliser jumps and farmers pay the bill. What interests me today is not the latest crisis itself but the lesson hiding behind it. While fertiliser prices may have eased and oil may have retreated, the underlying risk has not gone away. In many ways it has become larger, cheaper and far more difficult to contain. The mistake many commentators are

58

making today is assuming the latest conflict is simply another Middle East flare-up. I am not convinced that is what is happening. What I think we are witnessing is something much more significant which is that the cost of disrupting global trade has collapsed. For most of modern history, if a country wanted to threaten shipping it needed a very large navy and billions upon billions of dollars. The ability to project power at sea belonged almost exclusively to major powers. Today we are learning a very different lesson and the economics have become completely inverted. The attacker is no longer spending millions while the defender spends thousands, but the attacker is spending thousands while the defender spends billions. A drone costing less than a ute, can force the diversion of a vessel carrying cargo worth hundreds of millions of dollars. A missile costing tens of thousands can trigger military responses costing millions. That is the real revolution. The weapon itself is almost secondary because what has changed is the accessibility of the technology. Engines, electronics, GPS guidance,

Trevor Whittington is CEO of WAFarmers

satellite communications and explosive payloads are no longer the exclusive preserve of major powers. A determined insurgency no longer needs a blue-water navy to create global disruption but simply needs enough capability to convince the market that the risk has become unacceptable. For agriculture this matters enormously because modern farming is built upon global supply chains. The diesel in the tractor, the urea in the spreader, the chemicals in the spray rig and many of the parts required to keep machinery operating all arrive through important shipping networks. We often talk about supply chains as though they are abstract concepts discussed by economists and politicians. They are not. Every tonne of urea spread across a paddock and every litre of diesel burnt during seeding begins its journey on a ship somewhere in the world. That is why I believe many people are

Whittington says farmers need to treat fuel supply security in the same manner as rainfall risk. Image: Noel/stock.adobe.com

drawing the wrong conclusion from the recent easing in oil and fertiliser prices. The lesson is not that the system proved resilient, prices spiked and then settled. The lesson is that the system remains remarkably vulnerable. The market got through this disruption. The next one may be larger. The one after that may involve actors with better technology, longer range and fewer inhibitions about using it. History suggests this is not a temporary phenomenon. Human beings have been remarkably consistent in their willingness to wage war. The point is not that every conflict causes a fertiliser shock, but that enough of them do that farmers should treat geopolitical risk as a normal business risk rather than an exceptional event. That should force us to rethink the way we view risk. Most farm businesses spend considerable time thinking about rainfall, frost, commodity and interest-rate risks, yet few spend much time considering geopolitical risk despite the fact a conflict on the other side of the world can double the cost of fertiliser, send diesel prices soaring and completely alter the economics of a cropping program.

The events of the past few months should be a reminder that the world remains a far more connected and far less stable place than many of us would like to believe. What farmers should take from all this is not panic, but realism. The lesson of the last three months is exactly the same lesson as the last fifty years: when supply chains are functioning normally, fertiliser and fuel are available and freight works. Everybody assumes it always will, but then a conflict starts somewhere most people could barely find on a map a month earlier and suddenly everyone is scrambling for product. Governments panic, markets reprice, suppliers invoke force majeure, politicians hold press conferences and farmers ring around looking for fertiliser and fuel that no longer seem quite as available as they were last week. If there is one practical lesson from all of this, it is that farmers should treat fuel and fertiliser security the same way they treat rainfall risk. Nobody knows exactly when the next shock will arrive, but history suggests it will arrive. The farmer who locks in supply early,

has product physically on farm before heading away after harvest, and views storage as an insurance policy rather than a cost will probably sleep a lot better than the one assuming the market will always provide exactly what he needs exactly when he needs it. The last three months have not been an aberration – they have been a reminder. The next fertiliser shock is probably already under construction and the only uncertainty is where it happens next, and whether farmers have learnt anything from the last one.

Charging ahead Zero emissions, reduced noise levels and cheaper operation are among the ways in which Bobcat says its newest machinery addition stands out. The company has added its first ever all-electric mower – the ZT6000e – which builds on the reputation of its petrol-powered zero-turn equivalents. Designed for lifestyle farmers, along with commercial landscapers and local governments, it is fitted with a robust 58V, 20.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This provides up to eight hours of runtime on a single charge and Bobcat says it can cover nearly 24 acres under optimal conditions before needing to recharge. An onboard charger that connects to standard outlets provides charging flexibility, while a full recharge using a 240V connection takes around six hours. Bobcat of Australia is a business division

of Clark Equipment, whose Bobcat grounds maintenance equipment general manager Marc Langeweg expects the ZT6000e to be popular with a variety of customers. “This new flagship model aims to redefine the commercial landscaping market by pairing high-capacity lithium-ion technology with the heavy-duty performance professional crew’s demand,” Langeweg says. “For contractors and councils looking to reduce noise, emissions, and day-today running costs without sacrificing commercial-grade cut quality, the Bobcat ZT6000e is a compelling step forward.” For customers already familiar with Bobcat’s zero-turn mower range, going electric does not mean any loss in operational quality. “When designing the ZT6000e

electric mower, Bobcat ensured that no compromises were made on the cut-quality in the name of battery performance,” Langeweg says. It features the patented AirFX cutting system in its decks, which utilises three independent electric motors that allow operators to adjust blade tip speeds on the fly – ensuring a professional finish even in varying grass conditions. The ZT6000e also uses independent motors for the blades, removing the need for replacement drivebelts which are a common failure point in tough Australian mowing conditions. By eliminating the petrol engine, there are also no costs for engine oil, filters, spark plugs and fuel system cleaners – providing further ongoing savings for users in addition to not requiring petrol. While most farmers do not have the same noise restrictions as city-based commercial operations, the quiet engine means they can also run at times when petrol-powered machines cannot. INDUSTRY NEWS Growers will be able to use the tool to test scenarios before decisions are locked in. Image: Hort Innovation

Decision maker As growers continue to face rising input costs, a new digital tool is being created to provide them with clearer information before making a commitment to a crop Hort Innovation is funding the creation of a new digital tool to help vegetable, onion and potato growers make clearer and more confident decisions before committing to crops, inputs and production plans. Named Veg SmartMargins, it directly responds to fuel, fertiliser, labour and pricing pressures by giving growers a practical way to see whether a crop is genuinely profitable once total labour and overheads are included, not just variable costs. Scheduled to launch in 2027, the tool will move growers beyond basic gross margin calculations to a secure, web-based platform that supports full enterprise level financial analysis and decision making. Growers will be able to use the tool to test scenarios before decisions are locked in.

By adjusting prices, yields and input costs, growers can also see how different choices affect whole farm profitability, cashflow and risk. “Growers are making decisions in a far more volatile and high-cost environment compared to a decade ago,” Hort Innovation general manager industry service and delivery Andrew Francey says. “Veg SmartMargins builds on a tool growers already recognise and updates it for the realities they’re facing today, giving them clearer information before they commit time, money and resources.” Hort Innovation says the tool will be shaped by growers throughout the duration of the entire project, from discovery through deployment. Through structured regional workshops and beta testing, grower input will directly

shape how costs are allocated, scenarios are tested and results are presented, ensuring the tool reflects how growers think and record their costs to deliver a practical and intuitive outcome. “This tool is about helping growers answer real questions,” South Australian vegetable grower Scott Samwell says. “What should I plant? What can I afford? What is my cost of production? What happens if costs rise further? “By testing scenarios first, growers can make decisions with more confidence in a tough climate.” The platform will also integrate anonymised industry benchmarking data from the national vegetable and onion benchmarking program, allowing growers to see how their business compares with national and regional averages while maintaining full control of their own information. Grower financial data will remain private and secure, and benchmarking information will only be presented in aggregate anonymised form. To support real world use, Veg SmartMargins will be backed by practical training and extension activities, including plain English user guides and manuals, short, targeted video tutorials and regionally delivered online workshops.

Safeguarding the future A new seed vault and plant growth facility in New South Wales will help protect valuable crop genetics and support the development of more resilient grain varieties New South Wales has unveiled a $1.1 million seed vault and plant growth facility at the Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute. The state-of-the-art facility is set to securely store thousands of unique grain seed lines in a climate-controlled environment, preserving critical genetic resources for future generations and safeguarding Australia’s food security. The facility also includes three purpose-built Plant Pathology Growth Rooms, which will enable NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) scientists to accelerate disease resistance research in key winter grain crops. Additionally, DPIRD scientists will

be supported in developing grain varieties which are better equipped to withstand emerging pests and changing climatic conditions. A dehumidified cool room, a long-term freezer room, and an insulated ante room also feature in the seed vault. It will also be home to the NSW DPIRD Rice Germplasm Collection which holds almost 3,000 accessions including the first cultivars of rice bred and released by

the department nearly 100 years ago. The facility will hold wheat and barley germplasm, which is used for developing new sources of disease resistance, winter cereal mutant resources, and the DPIRD Lupin Germplasm Collection. Seed collections which the department maintains form a library of plant genetics, allowing DPIRD scientists to deposit and check out varieties for current and future research.

Suit up Horticulture growers are trialling wearable exoskeleton suits to reduce physical strain on workers and lift productivity around the most demanding on farm tasks Hort Innovation has launched a new project which will test how wearable exoskeleton technology can reduce fatigue and injury risk for horticultural workers in repetitive and physically intensive jobs. Workers will trial the exoskeleton suits during everyday tasks, allowing researchers to compare physical load, movement and injury risk with and without the technology. The project is designed to fit around normal farm operations, giving growers evidence from real tasks rather than laboratory testing. AI enabled sensors are being used to analyse worker movements, generating task risk scores. This data will

help identify where exoskeletons could offer the greatest safety and benefits, and where they may not be practical. “Keeping horticulture workers safe is critical to the long-term sustainability of our industry,” Hort Innovation general manager of production and sustainability R&D Anthony Kachenko says. “This project gives growers practical, on farm evidence about whether exoskeletons can reduce physical strain without disrupting normal operations.” The technology was on display at the recent Hort Connections event, following initial trials on commercial farms in Tasmania and Queensland, with industry partners hosting on farm assessments.

Early pilot assessments have seen a 25 per cent total reduction in movement-related injury risk and a 64 per cent risk drop in tray carrying. Laurie Adams from Burlington Berries in Tasmania, says being involved in the trial will provide first-hand insight into the potential of exoskeletons, with initial results already showing positive benefits. “As growers, we need practical proof before rolling out new technology,” Adams says. “Being part of the trial gives us the chance to see how exoskeletons perform in real farm conditions and whether they can help our team work safely and productively.”

INDUSTRY NEWS

Proven resilience Australia’s farm gate production value is forecast to reach almost $100 billion next financial year, despite the impact of seasonal conditions and the Middle East conflict The Australian Bureau of Agricultural Resources Economics and Sciences (ABARES) has released new figures which show the gross value of agricultural production is forecast to reach more than $98 billion in 2026-27, and more than $104 billion when combined with fisheries and forestry. This is set to be the second highest result on record, and will follow a record result for agriculture, fisheries and forestry this financial year of almost $110 billion confirmed in the latest data.

Forecasts also show the value of agriculture, fisheries and forestry exports will reach almost $80 billion in 2026-27, with strong demand for Australia’s worldclass food and fibre. However, difficult seasonal conditions and higher costs for fuel and fertiliser – driven by the conflict in the Middle East – are expected to have an impact on farm profits. The federal government is also investing more than $14 billion towards the Strengthening Australia’s Fuel Resilience package.

The latest ABARES forecast shows Australia’s farm gate production value is forecast to reach almost $100 billion next financial year. Image: FiledIMAGE/stock.adobe.com

This will provide some relief by securing more fuel and fertiliser, the government says, while boosting the nation’s sovereign capability. “Australian farmers, fishers and producers have proven again and again just how resilient they are,” federal agriculture minister Julie Collins says. “This forecast demonstrates this resilience once again and the tremendous contribution our farmers, fishers and producers continue to make to our national economy despite serious challenges.”

Host city The future of food supply chain innovation and technology will be discussed in Adelaide at evokeAG 2027

Adelaide has been announced as the host city for evokeAG 2027, Asia Pacific’s leading agrifood technology and innovation conference. Now in its seventh year, evokeAG has established a global reputation for connecting the agrifood innovation ecosystem and helping turn ideas into partnerships, investments and positive change. Led by AgriFutures Australia, evokeAG 2027 will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre from February 16-17, 2027. It is expected to attract producers, investors, researchers, startups, scaleups, corporates and policy leaders from across Australia and the world. Adelaide

previously hosted the event in 2023. “Australian agriculture faces increasing supply chain pressures, climate variability and workforce shortages, making forums like evokeAG, where solutions are found, tested, scaled and adopted, critical,” AgriFutures Australia chair Mick Veitch says. “Australia has an important role to play in feeding a growing global population, and innovation will help determine how well we do that. Agtech is a key part of lifting the productivity and profitability of our farmers. “We can have all the technology in the world; however, it must remain grounded in the realities of agriculture to be effective.”

International partnership A new partnership will deepen connections between Australian agtech expertise with India’s $636 billion agriculture industry Charles Sturt University has deepened Australia’s agriculture ties with India through a new Australia-India AgriTech partnership, designed to accelerate digital agriculture, climate-smart farming and agtech innovation across both nations. The initiative will enable joint research, technology exchange, farmer-focused innovation and commercialisation pathways, with Charles Sturt’s Global Digital Farm and AgriPark at Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, to play key roles. Charles Sturt University vicechancellor professor Renée Leon says the partnership will connect the university’s researchers and industry partners to

one of the world’s leading agriculture economies, worth $636 billion in 2025. “Agriculture has been a key pillar of the relationship between Australia and India for decades, with both nations increasingly focused on productivity, sustainability and climate resilience,” Leon says. “The partnership will strengthen Charles Sturt’s already significant contributions to research in food security, sustainable agriculture, climate resilience and drought adaptation, and digital and smart farming technologies.”

The university says since the Australia–India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement came into force in late 2022, Australian premium agricultural exports to India have increased by 88 per cent, while Indian agricultural exports to Australia have grown 35 per cent over the same period. Additionally, the university says 90 per cent of Australian goods exports to India are now tariff free, significantly improving market access for Australian producers and agtech companies.

Heating up A new study aims to better understand the impact of extreme climate on Australia’s agricultural sector, as heatwaves become both more frequent and intense

Charles Darwin University’s Northern Institute is leading a study which will explore how rising temperatures are affecting labour productivity, operational costs, crop and livestock production, and the long-term sustainability of agricultural businesses in Australia. Farmers, farm managers, agricultural workers, contractors, and others working in Australia’s agricultural industry are invited to participate in an anonymous

survey, which will examine the effects of extreme heat. Principal Investigator Professor Kerstin Zander, a senior research fellow with CDU’s Northern Institute, says the research will address a major knowledge gap in understanding the real-world impacts of extreme heat on agriculture and food security. “While drought has traditionally received significant attention in Australian agriculture, the impacts of extreme heat and heatwaves on workers’ health and productivity, as well as farm operations remain comparatively underexplored,” Zander says. “This is particularly important as Australia experiences more frequent and intense heatwaves, placing growing pressure on essential food-producing industries and regional communities.” Zander adds the findings could support evidence-based policy development, improve preparedness planning and strengthen climate resilience.

Grand opening

Hangcha Equipment Rental Australia opened in Sydney

Chinese forklift manufacturer Hangcha Group has reached an important milestone in its long-term commitment to the Australian market Hangcha Equipment Rental Australia Pty Ltd has officially opened in Sydney, representing the next step in its local development. The new 2,100-square-metre warehousing facility is set to strengthen the company’s national service network, following the establishment of Hangcha Group’s Australian company in Melbourne in 2022. The facility will help deliver a range of services, including equipment sales, short and long-term rentals, after-sales support, and spare parts supply. This will ensure stronger operational support, faster response times, and lasting customer partnerships, the company says. Senior company figures, along with valued partners and industry guests attended the opening ceremony to celebrate the milestone. During this celebration, Hangcha Equipment Rental Australia deputy general manager Ada Yuan outlined three key focus areas that will drive the company’s next phase of growth. The first being to strengthen fundamentals by enhancing local parts availability and accelerating service response capabilities. The second key focus area – to deepen partnerships by empowering dealers and partners through technical training,

market development support, and collaborative growth initiatives. The last key focus area is to advance market position by expanding the company’s presence in premium segments, while growing global key account

partnerships to elevate Hangcha’s brand influence across Australia. For more information on the Hangcha Group range of models, visit: hangchaaustralia.com.au
