FROM THE EDITOR Rata Equipment’s Power Claw is helping a Victorian cattle farmer with land clearing. See page 24.
Welcome As the attention of many Australian farmers turns to the busy harvest season, we have another edition packed with stories from across the breadth of Australian agriculture. It begins with our cover story, where well-known Queensland cattle farmer Don Heatley has found a Lamtrac mulcher carrier and Diamond Mowers brush cutter from Colbrook Industries to be the perfect combination for managing leucaena on his property. While this is an asset for feeding cattle, leucaena can grow too large to be effective if not managed properly and we hear about his experience in keeping it under control. Land management is important for any farmer, with Rata Equipment’s Power Claw being another valuable tool. We speak to a Victorian cattle farmer who has been using this with great success for clean-up work on his Gippsland farm. Machines can be used to achieve all sorts of goals, whether it is large scale work like these cattle farmers or to turn a hobby into a business. For a New South Wales couple, a Bobcat compact tractor from Clark Equipment has enabled a passion project of growing flowers to expand into something much bigger. Another customer testimonial comes from Victoria, where a LiuGong 848T wheel loader has given a farmer a huge increase in capability over the telehandler he was previously using. Elsewhere, we speak to Wideland Group dealer-principal Andrew Kibble about JCB’s recent distribution changes and learn about the benefits he has already seen. Ahead of both harvest and summer, it is important for farmers to make sure they are prepared for whatever is ahead.

Farms & Farm Machinery
BYPY Transmissions discusses why pre-harvest checks of PTO shafts and clutches can save time and money while preventing potential injury, while pump supplier Veldonas shares how its products can help with bushfire management. Viva Energy also talks about how proper lubrication can keep farm machinery performing at its best during this crucial time. There are also extensive profiles on Sammut Agricultural Machinery’s range of locally manufactured and important machines, a look at the compact tracked loaders recently added by Hercules Machinery Group and detail about how JLG’s recent expansion is making more machinery available to agricultural sector. New Holland’s latest T5 Dual Command tractor is profiled, while there are two major updates in our product news section – specifically a new dealership agreement for Landini in some states, along with Bourgault and CNH Industrial teaming up on seeding machinery. In the events space, Rocky River Ag Services discusses its ongoing sponsorship of South Australia’s Hart Field Day, while we also have the winners from the Australian Bulk Handling Awards. Nuffield Australia has named its latest batch of scholars while the AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award winner has also been revealed.

INDUSTRY NEWS
AgriFutures chairman Mick Veitch, award runner-up Kelly Shotton, federal agriculture minister Julie Collins, award winner Narelle Zanker, Westpac’s Peta Ward and AgriFutures managing director Brianna Casey
A South Australian farmer whose agritourism venture has brought more than 1,200 visitors onto her family’s working farm has won the AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award South Australian farmer Narelle Zanker has been named the national winner of AgriFutures’ Rural Women’s Award for her work in reconnecting people with agriculture through hands-on education and tourism. Zanker is the co-founder of Dairy Adventures, which has welcomed more than 1,200 visitors onto her family’s working dairy farm since its inception two years ago. Located on a 4,000 acre property in Mannum, east of Adelaide, the venture was formed after Zanker opted to return to her roots following four years as a school teacher. It has helped to turn everyday milking and calf feeding into lessons on food safety and animal care, while also bridging the gap between farmers and consumers. After being named as the South Australian Rural Women’s Award winner earlier this year – and receiving a $15,000 grant – Zanker’s national win will mean an additional $20,000 grant to help her further expand the education opportunities available. “For me, this has always been about reconnecting people with the land,” she says. “So many people have become disconnected from where their food comes from, and once you get them out on the farm and show them what actually goes into producing milk, you can see the light bulb go off. “This grant means we can take that further, running virtual classrooms so kids all over Australia can have that same opportunity to learn about dairy

farming and where their food comes from, even if they can’t make it out to the farm in Mannum.” The national award was announced by federal agriculture minister Julie Collins during a gala dinner in Canberra on September 8. AgriFutures Australia managing director Brianna Casey was one of more than 500 attendees and says her first ever Rural Women’s Award presentation was an eye-opening and inspiring experience. “Stepping into this role and seeing the impact of the Rural Women’s Award up close has been a genuine privilege, it’s one of the clearest examples I’ve seen of the ripple effect that regional women are having across every corner of Australia,” she says. “Narelle Zanker embodies exactly what this award is about. “She’s young, smart and passionate, and she’s built a genuinely commercial business off the back of her experience as a teacher and her life on the farm, all while reconnecting everyday Australians with where their food actually comes from.” Northern Territory’s Kelly Shotton was named the national runner-up and will receive an additional $15,000 grant to boost her work. Shotton built a platform called Stationly – formerly known as BoreWatch – which allows station staff to monitor tanks, bores, troughs and fuel across vast properties and cattle stations, replacing often-lost paperwork and trackable and reliable data. “I never expected Stationly to go this far when I first built it just to make my own job easier,” she says.
AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award runner-up Kelly Shotton and winner Narelle Zanker
“Everything used to be tracked on paper, and I could see how much time and detail was being lost along the way. “This grant means I can now put real energy into developing Stationly further and rolling it out so more people can spend less time chasing paperwork and more time making good decisions on the ground.” Prior to the national award presentation, every state and territory had named its winner and these automatically became national finalists. These other finalists were: • Kristie Ivone, founder, Boas Language Academy (New South Wales / ACT) • Amy Vickers, founder, Well Beyond Service (Tasmania) • Angie Nisbet, co-founder, FarmHer Hands (Queensland) • Becky Dickinson, founder, Veterinary Support Services (Victoria) • Angela Teale, founder of Starsite Australia (Western Australia). Applications for next year’s awards have already opened and can be made via the AgriFutures Australia website. Nominations will close on Wednesday November 4, except for Northern Territory which will remain open until Wednesday January 20, 2027.

Farms & Farm Machinery
For cattle farmers like Don Heatley, leucaena is both a significant asset for finishing heavyweight bullocks but also a significant land management challenge. Capable of growing up to 7m tall, Heatley has some leucaena on his Queensland farm which is more than two decades old and maintaining its productive value for cattle is an ongoing task. Having previously relied on contractors to cut the leucaena, Heatley finally decided to invest in his own machinery to ensure he can avoid it becoming overgrown and unproductive. Thanks to a Lamtrac 6160T and Diamond Mowers Brush Cutter Pro X84 from Colbrook Industries, Heatley now has his solution. “The number of contractors who were familiar with leucaena and had the machinery to cut it was starting to decrease but also having them available at a time that suited us to cut it was just not quite lining up,” he says. “In the end, we bit the bullet and decided to go down the Lamtrac path. Colbrook Industries demoed a machine here and we bought a new one after that. “You’ve got to have very tough and robust gear, and that’s why we combined the Lamtrac and the Diamond Mowers cutter. “We’ve been really pleased with what we’ve got.” Blessing and curse Leucaena is a high protein legume which can help with feeding cattle, particularly in breeding and fattening operations such as Heatley’s.
Leucaena is an asset for cattle feeding but requires considerable management
If left untouched though, it can quickly grow in both height and thickness – something which becomes a challenge during the wet season when Heatley shuts his entire operation down. After three or four months of not being eaten by cattle, the leucaena can quickly grow beyond a height where it can be accessed and the result is using expensively irrigated land to grow something unproductive. “In this tropical northern environment that we live in, where you’ve generally got a fairly substantial wet season, it becomes a big, healthy, robust plant in front of your eyes,” he says. “It’s a tree and it’s got a lot of leaf material, but past a certain point it’s up at a height where cattle can’t reach it. “Productivity starts to drop when you’ve got so much material at the top that nothing can reach. “You end up using irrigation to grow a lot of wood and unreachable leaf.”
Heatley says leucaena is the type of plant where farmers need to think about how to cut it from the day it is planted. While cattle help to keep the leuceana’s size down to an extent, Heatley says it would still require proper cutting every two to three years. With paddocks needing to be dry in order to get machinery in, there are limited windows when it can be managed and plenty of factors need to align to have a contractor available at the perfect time. “We can’t hang around waiting, so we bought our own equipment,” Heatley says. Important moment Heatley is an experienced figure within Australian agriculture, being the sixth generation of his family to be in cattle farming in north Queensland. They currently have two properties located 40km apart which run about 5,000 head of cattle and finish about 1,500 head of bullocks.

Heatley has also been heavily involved in the wider industry, having served as chairman of Meat & Livestock Australia and on the Cattle Council of Australia, among many other industry bodies. It was a trip to the North Queensland Rotary Field Days where he met Colbrook Industries and began a process that would see him acquire his leucaena management machinery. “We had been researching machinery that could cut leucaena for a couple of years, figuring out what would or wouldn’t work, and had been backwards and forwards talking to Colbrook on and off over quite a while,” he says. “We had tried a couple of different things with modified sugarcane harvesters and things like that, but they just didn’t have the robustness that we needed.” He eventually decided a Lamtrac 6160T and Diamond Mowers Brush Cutter Pro X84 package would be the solution and was fortunate that Colbrook was taking one from Melbourne to Cairns at the time. They offered Heatley a demonstration on his farm so he could see it in action and he was immediately sold. “That’s what swung us towards buying one – it was fantastic,” he says. “You’re looking at a skid steer on steroids and it’s driving a slasher on steroids.” Perfect pair The Lamtrac 6160T is the third generation in the manufacturer’s compact track loader style mulcher carrier. Its overall operation resembles a skid steer loader, something which Heatley admits his son has had more experience with than himself, but it was a quick process to familiarise himself with its functionality.
A live demo on the property gave Heatley the confidence to purchase the Lamtrac and brush cutter
Features of the 6160T include a 155hp (116kW) Cummins engine, a comfortable and spacious cabin and a three-tiered radiator to control air, engine and hydraulics temperatures – something which is particularly valuable in the north Queensland heat.
Established leucaena can grow thick, woody stems that need to be cut
12
Farms & Farm Machinery
Its lighting system is described as “fantastic” by Heatley, enabling work through the night if required. The Diamond Mowers Brush Cutter Pro X84 he has paired it with has an 84-inch (2.13m) cutting width and can handle materials up to 255mm thick. It has a simple and robust three-blade design that allows for easy maintenance and blade changeover, while its disc construction includes 25mm thickness, 50,000psi rated steel to offer maximum durability. For Heatley, this combination of machinery has proven effective in the 12 months he has owned them. “Leucaena is a fantastic plant to fatten cattle, but it’s a very tough plant, so when you cut it there’s a few things to consider,” he says. “One is you’ve got to have the horsepower to actually cut and, secondly, it’s about the running gear. “Leucaena is very tough on rubber-tyred machines, and as opposed to tracked machines, so we needed a combination of horsepower and tracks.
Heatley’s property has around 1,000 acres of irrigated leucaena with plans to double this
“The Lamtrac itself is just one part of the equation, it’s also got to drive a head. “We bought the Diamond Mowers brush cutter because it’s got to drive something equally as tough and robust as it is – you can’t march into leucaena paddocks and think you’re going to cut it with an oversized lawnmower.” Long-term plan As a sixth-generation farmer, Heatley and his family are clearly in the cattle business for the long haul. The Lamtrac is also going to get plenty of ongoing use thanks to plan to expand the leucaena footprint. He currently has about 1,000 acres of leucaena on the property, with plans to plant about another 1,000 acres in the next two years. This will mean that when he gets into full production in about three years, there will be well over 7,000km of rows with leucaena in it. “The interesting thing in our case is that the majority of what we’re cutting now is 22 years old,” he says. “The nice part about it is that one
machine will do all the big old stuff now, and the new leucaena that we’re planting will be cut at three times the speed that we’re going through our old stuff now. “These machines will work absolutely fine for both.” The aftersales services experience has been flawless for Heatley, supported by Colbrook’s dedicated service team. They provide boots-on-the-ground support nationwide and are backed by strategically located facilities along the east coast of Australia, including a Far North Queensland facility in Cairns. This support is valuable, particularly when he cannot afford downtime during limited windows for managing leucaena. “If I had to give them a rating out of 10, I’d give them something better. They’ve been
excellent to deal with,” Heatley says. “We haven’t had issues to worry about and with any minor things they’ve attended to them really quickly. “Another thing I like is that I can call them if I don’t understand exactly how something works and I’ll get an instantaneous response. “If you have an expensive machine you don’t want to go out and wreck it, so that’s great support to have. “I would happily recommend them to anybody who was giving thought to doing something like we’re doing and if I need another one in future, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another.” Colbrook Industries’ full range can be viewed at www.colbrookindustries.com.au

Sky’s the limit Clark Equipment customers in several states now have access to an expanded range thanks to the dealership taking on Landini tractors
The Super II 90 High Clearance ROPS is one tractor being added to Clark Equipment’s range
Landini tractors will provide an extra specialty offering for Clark Equipment
fellow Italian manufacturer McCormick, as well as Bobcat tractors, within Clark Equipment’s agricultural portfolio. Knoke says the addition of Landini enables Clark Equipment to clearly position its three tractor brands, with Bobcat covering the compact and utility segments, McCormick focusing on the higher-horsepower market, and Landini targeting specialty applications. With both McCormick and Landini manufactured in Italy and sharing significant engineering commonality, Knoke says customers will benefit from stronger support and improved parts availability. “One of the major factors behind Clark Equipment taking on the Landini brand
was the synergy in parts and service support,” he says. “McCormick and Landini share a significant number of common components, including engines, transmissions, and driveline systems. “This enables us to stock greater parts volumes, improve service efficiency, and provide superior customer support through increased parts availability, faster turnaround times, and enhanced technical resources.” Clark Equipment already works closely with several northern Italian manufacturers through its agricultural attachments portfolio, including Orsi, Enorossi, and Muratori, making the addition of Landini a natural fit according to Knoke. There has already been strong interest in the brand since Clark Equipment commenced distribution, with enquiries received from growers and producers in Tasmania, South East Victoria, South Australia, and key horticultural regions across its distribution territory. “The response has been extremely positive,” Knoke says. “Landini has a long heritage in the specialty tractor market, and we see significant opportunities to support customers who require a purpose-built machine for vineyard, orchard, vegetable, and other specialist farming applications.” The full Landini range which is being stocked by Clark Equipment can be viewed at www.clarkequipment.com

Adding Landini tractors to its portfolio has been described as an “important step” by Clark Equipment, which believes the brand will complement its existing agricultural offering. Clark Equipment has taken on distribution of Landini tractors across Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and the Northern Territory, with an initial focus on a range of specialist models. Four of these models are from the Super II range: the 85 ROPS, 100 Cab, 90 HighClearance ROPS, and 110 High-Clearance Cab. The additional models Clark will focus on include the Rex 90 T3 ROPS, Rex 110 T3 Cab, Rex 4-120, and Rex 3-080 Low Profile Cab. This range provides farmers with a choice of tractors from 75hp to 112hp (55kW to 82kW), available with either fully enclosed cabins or ROPS configurations. Designed for specialty applications, these tractors are ideally suited to vegetable production, market gardens, vineyards, and orchards. “The addition of Landini to the Clark Equipment portfolio represents an important step in expanding our agricultural offering and delivering greater choice to customers across Australia,” Clark Equipment general manager David Knoke says. “We believe the inclusion of specialty tractors perfectly complements our existing product portfolio and strengthens our ability to support a broader range of farming applications and customer requirements.” The Landini range will sit alongside

loader that led him to speak to LiuGong dealer Rhys Evans Farm Machinery. Brown has dealt with Rhys Evans for machinery purchases across more than 25 years and has trusted their advice, so he opted for a demonstration of the 848T. Once he sat inside the cabin and experienced the 848T properly, he saw the quality of its componentry. He was so impressed by the wheel loader that he chose to purchase one, with Brown also saying his neighbours

Wheel loaders might immediately conjure up images of construction sites rather than farms, but there is a good reason why these machines are rapidly growing in popularity in agriculture. Like many of his peers, Victorian dairy farmer Steve Brown has relied on telehandlers to do much of the lifting and moving of materials around his farm, but his decision to buy a LiuGong 848T wheel loader has already reaped major benefits with the most demanding jobs. “We’ve still got a telehandler but they were just not coping with the heaviest work we do and we would turn them over every two years,” he says. “This wheel loader is built to do those jobs and pick up heavy loads – using it has been awesome.” Daily work on the Browns’ farm, which Steve operates with his son, involves plenty of feed mixing and much of the LiuGong wheel loader’s work has been loading the mixer wagon while he also uses it to pick up gravel and rubble. “We’ve got a lot of product that we mix every day and it’s nothing for me to be doing seven mixer loads every day over the autumn,” he says. “We have shelters and the cows don’t walk of a nighttime, so they’re fed on the pad. “We also have shelters for calves and
were equally impressed during their own demonstration of LiuGong’s 848T. “We looked at the components in it – engine wise and hydraulics – and it was well put together,” Brown says. “The message needs to be out there for farmers to give it a go like I did. “We got a demo, and then our neighbours around the corner got a demo and said they’ll be buying one next time. “They milk 3,000 cows and they said ‘why would I buy something else when you’ve got such a good unit?’” Power and style LiuGong’s 848T wheel loader is built for heavy grunt work, with a 178hp (133kW) Cummins B7 engine powering it. Weighing more than 16 tonnes, this unit has a rated load capacity of 4,800kg while its 3 cubic metre bucket capacity means materials handling jobs such as Brown’s can be completed efficiently. The 848T is about so much more than just sheer power though, with operator comfort and performance at the forefront. It has a ZF200 automatic transmission for comfortable operation, along with a variable hydraulic system designed to reduce energy and oil consumption.
It also has 360-degree surround handrails and anti-slip steps to enable operators to safely and easily get into the comfortable and ergonomic cabin. Fully pressurised, this cabin ensures a quiet and dust-free environment and an adjustable armrest, joystick and air-suspension seat help to maximise the driving experience. Panoramic glass windows and an optional rear-view camera combine to increase visibility by 15 per cent, with all of these features combining to create a winning experience for Brown. “The cameras in it are well set up and your ability to see everything around you is first class,” he says. “It’s more comfortable to drive than the telehandler as far as inside the cab and cameras go, plus there’s more room in them than a telehandler. “This wheel loader is up off the ground so you’re sitting higher and have better vision, plus you’ve got more room in the cab and it’s just not as hot and tight.” Growing market For Rhys Evans Farm Machinery, which has branches in the Victorian towns of Ballarat and Colac, farmers
such as Brown are the ideal demographic to be experiencing the benefits of LiuGong wheel loaders. “Our main target market is for farmers with silage pits,” Rhys Evans’ Colac sales manager Steve Montano says. “These farmers have been using telehandlers to load their mixer wagons, but the wheel loader offers additional advantages. “While you have good reach with the telehandler, they’re not built to push into a stack whereas a wheel loader can do it because that’s what it’s built for. “Another customer we sold one to said he’s saving half an hour on each load that he fills his mixer wagon with by using the wheel loader rather than the telehandler. “Using the wheel loader means they’re doing the job a lot more efficiently and safely, and the main benefit is the time saving which is huge.” Montano has also been impressed with the build quality of LiuGong wheel loaders, highlighting both the genuine Cummins engine and ZF transmission which are popular across a significant number of other machines. “They are value for money but the quality is also very good,” he says.

Other farmers have also found the wheel loader handy for clean up jobs
“You sit in it and the layout is great and it’s extremely comfortable.” Choosing a wheel loader over a telehandler is something Montano knows many farmers have not yet considered, but he urges them to consider doing so depending on their needs as both service important purposes on farms. “The wheel loader is a bigger and heavier machine so it’s safer and easier because they’re articulated so they’re certainly more mobile and in most cases, people will be very surprised with the price,” he says. Shrewd decision For Brown, investing in a LiuGong wheel loader was a leap of faith but one which has already paid off. He knew the support and trust of a dealership he has been a customer of for 25 years meant he would be getting a good machine and one which would have strong aftersales service. After purchasing many other machines from the dealership and having a good experience, the same applies to his wheel loader purchase. “The relationship with Rhys Evans has been awesome and the backup service and ability to service their gear is second to none for us,” he says.

Farms & Farm Machinery
With an 4,800kg load capacity, the LiuGong 848T can handle heavy work
“They are just so easy to work with and warranties are always looked after well, which is another big thing too.” Boosting his productivity through the extra power and capacity compared to a telehandler, while also saving money, has been a double whammy of success. The telehandler remains in use despite the wheel loader doing the heavier work and being able to load four hay bales at a time rather than two, while the reduced strain on the telehandler will
also help to extend that machine’s lifespan. His advice to farmers considering going down the same path of a LiuGong wheel loader is simple. “Have a drive, have a look at what they’re running and you’ll go, you know what, this is value for money.” LiuGong wheel loaders can be viewed online at www.liugong.com.au and Rhys Evans Farm Machinery can be contacted at www.rhysevans.com.au

Enduring strength Australian farmers often work their machinery and attachments to its limits and need to have confidence that what they purchase can withstand the tough conditions it will experience. For Victorian cattle farmer Brad Ingram – who also runs a small earthmoving business – Rata Equipment’s Power Claw has provided the strength he needs. He is using the Power Claw, which provides a more versatile alternative to four-in-one buckets, on a skid steer loader and admits it has been put through its paces during more than three years of solid work. “We’ve leaned on it fairly hard with the power of the skid steer and we haven’t had any breakages or anything go wrong,” he says. “They’re just very well built and heavy duty, so we’ve been really impressed with the build quality.” In addition to skid steers, Rata’s Power Claw can be attached to machines such as tractors, excavators and telehandlers, with several models and working widths

available depending on the power of what it is being paired with. Its interlocking tines are made from AR450 abrasion resistant heavy-duty steel up to 16mm thick, which is a feature that gives farmers such as Ingram the
confidence in its long-term durability. By having these interlocking tines, it means items such as logs, rocks, hay bales and debris can be gripped inside the Power Claw and moved where necessary. Historically, farmers have relied on four-

in-one buckets or other attachments such as forks for moving these items around the farm and this is what Ingram used on before purchasing the Power Claw. He points out a number of shortfalls with these which the Power Claw’s design has addressed, with the Rata product’s quality also impressing him more than other claw alternatives. “If you are handling logs with the forks on the front of the tractor, you have obviously got to get them balanced or they will fall off, and they will also fall off if you are on a side slope,” he says. “With the four-in-one bucket, they’re very good for moving dirt, but they’re not actually very good for clamping uneven logs and things like that. “The Power Claw just had a very good design and the build quality was a lot better than any other ones that we were looking at.”
Victorian cattle farmer Brad Ingram is a fan of using Rata Equipment’s Power Claw
Frequent usage Ingram farms with his family at Bonang in the far east of Victoria’s Gippsland region. They run about 300 cattle, with the bulk of his daily work involving checking on and tending to stock, cleaning up paddocks, improving pasture, clearing fence lines and building fences.
He also runs a small earthmoving business on the side, which involves jobs such as land clearing and road maintenance work. Much of this work is right in the wheelhouse of Rata’s Power Claw, giving it considerable versatility for use in the array of ongoing work his property requires. “The main thing that we use it for is just raking sticks and debris, picking up logs, but also when we’re feeding out silage,” he says. “Especially with the lifting capacity of the skid steer, you can pick up logs up to a couple of tonnes and move them around and throw them where you want them.” He has found ongoing work for the Power Claw at his brother’s property, also in far east Gippsland, to manage feral pigs. “We’re currently putting up an electric fence to keep the pigs out of his property and the Rata Power Claw has been really good for that,” Ingram says. “We’ve got a lot of sticks and debris to clear off the fence and get rid of trees, and it has been extremely versatile so far. “If we’ve got a fallen tree in a paddock to clean up or any stick raking, land clearing or pasture improvements to do, the Power Claw will be there to help us.”

Nothing but positive Having owned Rata’s Power Claw for more than three years, Ingram can speak from a position of experience when it comes to its ongoing benefits. “The single biggest improvement would be just to cut down on manual labour when you can do jobs predominantly from the machine and not by hand,” he says. “It’s hard to put an estimate on exactly how much time and labour it would have saved, but when you’re raking up loose sticks and debris, you can get 90 per cent of them with the Power Claw instead of getting a few and then having to pick the rest up by hand. “It has also improved safety around moving big logs and trees because once they’re clamped in the jaws, they can’t come out.” Further adding to the Power Claw’s appeal for Ingram is its simplicity, meaning he was able to get the time and labour saving benefits from day one of ownership. “Once you have used them for a couple of hours, you have worked them out and they are very easy to operate,” he says. “It’s easy to attach as an operator, it just hooks up to the quick hitch on your skid steer or the Euro hitch on the tractor, you plug in two hoses and off you go. “It’s very low maintenance and all the grease nipples are easily accessible and very easy to maintain.” Ingram first discovered the Power Claw while visiting the Farm World field day

Saving labour has been a standout for Ingram with the Power Claw
at Lardner Park in Gippsland, where Rata dealer Donalda Motors had one on display. Dealing with both Rata Equipment directly and the dealer during the process, he was full of praise for his customer experience – with his ownership experience proving equally rewarding. “When I was getting quotes, I rang Rata direct and they were very friendly to deal with,” he says. “They gave me a quote over the phone and gave me the nearest dealer’s contact details.
“We rang them, they had the Power Claw in stock and within about 10 days from first getting a quote, we had it on the machine. “In my experience they’ve been a very well built and versatile piece of equipment and I’d hands down recommend the Power Claw to any farmers or contractors.” Rata Equipment’s Power Claw can be viewed online at www.rataequipment.com

Reaching potential Viva Energy Australia is helping to maximise farm performance through technology and lubrication Viva Energy Australia, the authorised Shell Lubricants Macro Distributor of Australia, helps bring Shell’s global lubricants technology to Australian farms, backed by local support through the Viva Energy Technical Help Desk. Today’s farms generate more data than ever before, allowing artificial intelligence and connected equipment to optimise operations, reduce downtime and to realise their full potential. From GPS-guided auto-steering tractors to precision farming with yield-monitoring systems, automation and the emerging use of artificial intelligence, technology is transforming the way farms operate. Australian agriculture has always embraced innovation and technology and these advancements are helping farmers make more informed decisions to efficiently reduce waste, improve productivity and support more sustainable farming practices. Several types of technology are commonly used across Australian farms. These include yield-monitors and

yield-mapping, which identify strong and weak areas of paddocks using GPS-linked harvest data, along with GPS guides for auto-steering, which help tractors, seeders and sprayers maintain accurate paths while reducing overlap. Variable Rate Technology enables growers to vary crop inputs such as fertiliser, water and seeds across the paddock using soil mapping, while irrigation and soil moisture sensors provide real-time insights into moisture levels at varying depths for irrigation. Keeping equipment performing Modern agricultural equipment has become significantly more sophisticated. While technology helps improve productivity in the paddock, reliable machinery remains the foundation that enables these systems to deliver maximum value. When machinery experiences downtime, productivity can quickly be impacted, particularly during critical planting and harvesting windows where every hour counts.
Effective lubrication is often undervalued on farms and its benefits are not always fully understood. Although lubrication is often viewed as a routine maintenance requirement, it can be a strategic tool for helping equipment protection, reduce wear and support operational reliability. High-quality lubricants can help machinery continue operating efficiently under demanding conditions while contributing to longer equipment life and reduced downtime. As the authorised Shell Lubricants Macro Distributor of Australia, Viva Energy Australia combines Shell’s global technology and lubricant expertise with local technical support for Australian farmers. Whether operating a mixed fleet of tractors, harvesters, sprayers or earthmoving equipment, farmers can access advice through the Viva Energy Technical Help Desk to help select the right lubricant solutions for their machinery and operating conditions. Shell has been the number one
Advanced protection For many agricultural operations, diesel-powered equipment remains the workhorse of the farm. Tractors, harvesters, seeders and other agricultural equipment frequently operate under heavy loads, variable weather conditions and extended operating hours. Shell Rimula R4 L is formulated with Dynamic Protection technology. It is a heavy-duty diesel engine oil that helps protect engines from wear, deposits and oil breakdown across a range of operating conditions. Wide reaching JCB’s new national distribution model is already reaping benefits for one New South Wales dealer After 15 years of distributing JCB machinery, New South Wales dealer Wideland Group can easily be described as a stalwart of the brand. Despite already being well established as part of the manufacturer’s national dealer network, it has only taken a few months for Wideland to notice the benefits of JCB’s new approach to distribution. Earlier this year, JCB announced it would be removing a middleman from its supply chain, instead dealing directly with customers via Adaptalift JCB in major metropolitan markets and with its existing network of regional dealers. This has given these regional dealers such as Wideland Group, who have plenty of experience serving the agricultural market, direct access to the British manufacturer with the goal of this benefitting customers.
When asked whether the change had already reaped benefits, Wideland Group dealer-principal Andrew Kibble’s response was unequivocal: “100 per cent”. New direction While JCB’s distribution changes have seen Adaptalift come on board to serve major metropolitan markets along with certain regional areas, the manufacturer has chosen to stick with the network of regional dealers which were already selling its products. For agricultural customers, this has meant no change to where they access popular machines such as Fastrac tractors and Loadall telehandlers but introduces benefits elsewhere in the sales
and support process – along with benefits for the dealers themselves. “It’s very exciting having the new relationship with the manufacturer becoming the distributor in Australia,” Kibble says. “Taking out a middleman means we’ll be more competitive and can provide better backup with parts and warranty. “It also means we have direct contact with the manufacturer if there are any problems.” Building on success The distribution and aftersales support experience may have changed for Wideland Group this year, but 15 years of selling JCB products has meant the dealer knows the range inside out.

Kibble is full of praise for the quality of machine consistently built by JCB and its advantages for his customers. “JCB are innovative and the machines have been designed to solve problems for farmers,” Kibble says. “They are always adaptive to changes to be made and the overall build quality is outstanding.” JCB has long been known for its telehandlers across multiple sectors including agriculture, while the Fastrac tractors have gained traction in Australia in part for their impressive maximum speeds of 70km/h. Kibble also highlights skid steers as being a popular machine within Wideland’s extensive catchment areas that covers parts of New South Wales and Queensland. Kibble and Wideland Group represented JCB at the AgQuip Field Days in Gunnedah, where a wide selection of machinery was on display and gave an insight into the depth of product being supplied. “The telehandlers are outstanding and we sell them to feed lotters and grain farmers,” he says.
The 542-70 telehandler is available with three configurations
“They’re so versatile for people feeding on farm to those in the construction industry. “We also sell a lot of skid steers and their safety is second to none compared to other skid steers on the market because of their side door. “This means you’re not jumping over buckets and the safety aspect of the skid steers has been a big game changer for us. “With the cattle industry being so buoyant at the moment, they use the loaders and the skid steers and the telehandlers for value adding on the feed.”
High and low JCB’s telehandler range is extensive and includes models which have been customised for agricultural applications. Its Agri range includes models with up to 5,500kg lift capacities, meaning even farmers with demanding applications can find the perfect size. The range begins with the 525-60 Agri, which gives farmers a 6m lift height and 3.06m maximum reach, along with the capability to lift 2,500kg. At the top end, the 560-80 Agri telehandler has a 7.9m lift height, 4.49m

These configurations provide a host of benefits in areas such as the transmission, hydraulic flow and operator comfort. The manufacturer’s skid steers include the Powerboom loader arm, which JCB says provides 60 per cent better visibility around the machine when compared to conventional twin-arm machines. It also boasts tapered pivot pins and 20 per cent more steel than twin-arm skid steers, something which provides greater rigidity, less wear and improved material retention in the bucket. They also include a wide-opening side door, which means safer entry and exit for operators as they do not need to climb over large attachments or under an unsupported boom, prompting Kibble’s call of the safety being “second to none”. Speed sensations JCB’s tractor range is known as the Fastrac – with fast being the appropriate adjective to describes them. Its top-end model, the 8330 iCON, reaches a maximum speed of 70km/h, benefitting farmers using them in broadacre environments that involve significant travel distances. According to Kibble, the opportunities this creates for farmers has enabled the tractors to provide a solution to a lack of trained staff.

“We’re finding a little niche with the Fastracs that are solving a few problems for people with the labour shortages,” he says. “A lot of people are going to the Fastracs now because you don’t need a truck licence, so a lot of silage operators are using them instead of employing truck drivers, with the speeds they can do.” In addition to its impressive speed, JCB’s largest tractor – the Fastrac 8330 iCON – also offers an impressive 359hp (268kW) engine along with a 10,000kg rear lift capacity and 178L/min maximum hydraulic flow. This gives the tractor the capacity to handle the biggest jobs required on Australian farms, while its iCON control suite ensures farmers can operate the tractor with maximum comfort. Packed with technology, iCON includes a new armrest console, 30cm Skid steer loaders were highlighted by Kibble as being popular with Wideland customers. Image: JCB
touch-screen display and simplified operation of the joystick with features such as configurable buttons and a roller thumb control feature. JCB also offers the Fastrac 4220 iCON, which is smaller but still has a maximum 235hp (175kW) engine and includes four-wheel steering to make it more agile in applications such as row cropping and vegetable farming. A recent addition to JCB’s local lineup has been the Fastrac 6300 iCON, providing a 335hp (250kW) engine, 11,000kg rear lift capacity, 66km/h maximum speed and various upgrades to ensure it combines the best aspects of both existing models. Being prepared For grain growers around Australia, harvest time is crunch time. Every hour spent with machines out of action is money lost and one major breakdown can break the season. While farmers cannot prepare for every possible scenario, there are many things which can be done to ensure harvest season is tackled with the best preparation. Maintaining PTO shafts, clutches and gearboxes might not seem like the most glamorous of tasks but the consequences of neglecting them can be significant. Melbourne-based BYPY Transmissions has virtually seen it all when it comes to protecting these behind-the-scenes parts of valuable machinery and knows what farmers should be thinking about. “Farmers need to target pre-season checking of their PTO shafts and also clutch testing because a lot of these machines have been left all winter,” BYPY’s Ashley Male says. “The old mechanical friction clutches have a tendency to
34
Farms & Farm Machinery
freeze over winter where they rust up. “In terms of pre-checking, definitely wear items and safety covers and clutches are a no-brainer. “If people haven’t paid any attention to them, they should probably test them before they trial them so they don’t have a breakage. “Breakages usually extend further than the PTO shaft and sometimes they end up damaging the implement and/or the back of the tractor.” BYPY Transmissions also has a new product in its range for the coming season thanks to the SFT CV Pro shafts from Bondioli & Pavesi. These have helped to extend the standard greasing intervals from 50 hours to 250, reducing maintenance required, while the wide angles have also been fully redesigned. Applying to higher-horsepower shafts, Male says this will save farmers money through less grease being needed while also boosting efficiency thanks to less time being required in daily pre-starts.
BYPY’s shelves are stocked and ready with parts to help farmers prepare for harvest
Clutch moments BYPY Transmissions has a wealth of advice to pass on to farmers, which make up a significant portion of its customer base, but is also well positioned to provide practical support to machinery owners. Male highlights clutch testing as a pre-season job which more farmers are recognising the importance of. He says if a clutch that has been left out in the open during winter, this can lead to it forming a solid connection and not acting as a clutch during an overload situation, something which can then break the machine. BYPY Transmissions has a state-of-theart clutch tester at its Melbourne base, which was imported from Europe and can give farmers an insight into the health of these parts before any potential problems arise. “Clutch testing is something we can do for farmers and we do get quite a few,” Male says. “We’ve got a couple of large road maintenance contractors that will send all

BYPY Transmissions says ensuring machinery parts such as clutches and PTO shafts are ready to perform can make all the difference at harvest time
their shafts over just before the start of the season. “We’ll test clutches, replace universals and shafting covers just to get them compliant for the start of the season. “It’s a little bit more cost at the start, but it hopefully minimises downtime, which is huge during harvest.” Safety first If there is ever a time of year when farmers might be tempted to cut a corner on safety, it is during the busy harvest period. PTO shaft covers are another area which Male says should never be compromised on and which can significantly – and easily – increase a machine’s safety. Designed to protect the area where tractors and implements connect, ensuring the presence of an adequate PTO shaft cover can be a potential lifesaver. BYPY’s offering in this regard is extensive, being designed to meet stringent European standards as well as those in Australia and can include external to the shaft safety covers to become a complete covering system. “Safety covers are always important to mention because accidents unfortunately still happen and it’s something we need to be mindful of,” Male says. “As a lot of these older generation are getting out of the industry, I think many of the younger guys are picking up the importance of occupational health and safety a bit more. “Some of them are also still following examples that might not have been the best from previous generations of just taking covers off and thinking it’ll be fine.” While many of these jobs are important to complete before harvest, Male says safety around these machinery parts is important throughout the season for both farm owners and those working during harvest. “Workplace safety is mitigating as many circumstances as possible of something actually happening before it happens, rather than doing something afterwards to cover your obligations,” he says. “I think primary safety has always got to be one of the top priorities and there’s a lot more riding on it than just potential injury.” BYPY Transmissions is located at 48 National Avenue, Pakenham and its full offering can be viewed at www.bypy.com.au

Fast as lightning Daily life for owners of a New South Wales flower farm has been made significantly easier thanks to a Bobcat CT2035 compact tractor

Farms & Farm Machinery
Need to grow The popularity of the business made Katie and Ian both realise that expansion was necessary, but this would pose a challenge without mechanical assistance. “I have the attitude that if I just work hard enough I can do anything and I had built my first garden by hand,” Katie says. “It was a very slow and labour intensive job and quite quickly I realised I was going to want a lot more space. “I am in my early 30s and yet I have already encountered overuse injuries, so I couldn’t physically build gardens like that again at the scale that I am working at now.” The answer was to purchase a Bobcat CT2035 compact tractor from national Bobcat distributor Clark Equipment. It might only be a small machine by tractor standards, but its impact has been significant. Katie admits she needed a lot of encouragement to invest in the tractor, but Ian’s insistence on getting the machine has already reaped rewards for Grown by Lightning Hollows. “It’s expanded the business much quicker than we thought,” Ian says. “We had got stuck a little bit with how
much you can do physically on your own but we still had more demand. “We were working really hard but still not having enough supply, whereas now we’ve got more than enough supply and more time on our hands. “The tractor helped us to save time while also expanding simultaneously.” Small but mighty Bobcat’s CT2035 has a 35hp (26kW) three-cylinder diesel engine, along with three-range hydrostatic transmission. Bobcat says it “delivers the performance and power you need to tackle loader and implement work” while also having standard four-wheel drive to add the durability needed for jobs like digging, hauling and mowing. A tight turning radius of 2.45m makes it ideal for operation in environments such as the flower farm, while a maximum speed of 23.9km/h enables quick transportation where required. The three-range hydrostatic transmission is one feature which Ian highlights as being a benefit, particularly compared to many other tractors in this size category that only provide two-range.

For many farmers, buying a new tractor is designed around growing large-scale crops and continuing to do so year after year. For others though, one simple machinery purchase can allow a passion project to become a business and unlock new opportunities while doing so. Katie and Ian Knoke operate Grown by Lightning Hollows, a flower farm in the New South Wales Hunter Valley which sells to local florists and directly to consumers via a roadside stand. It was never intended to be a business. Katie originally took up gardening to grow fruit and vegetables and only added flowers to introduce pollinators into the garden – a decision which would be life changing. “Flowers really hooked me and the fruit and veggies got overtaken and forgotten,” she says. “I found I got a lot of satisfaction out of gifting my flowers and that joy that you’re able to bring to people by sharing them led me to expand and do it in a bigger way. “It took me a long time to accept what I was building was actually a business but it has become a real passion of mine.”
The Bobcat CT2035 is working on the Knokes’ flower farm in NSW
“This one gives us a few more options when we’re whipping around the property and a little bit more control,” he says. “We love the simplicity too – it’s a very easy-to-operate tractor.” The Knokes have owned the tractor for just over two years and also run a horse agistment business, which the tractor has been useful for. Ian describes the “awesome” frontend loader as having exceeded his expectations, while also highlighting Bobcat’s reputation as a company and confidence in the aftersales support. “It’s considered a compact tractor, so you’re somewhat limited with what you think it can lift, but we’ve been surprised with what we can do in terms of round bales for the horses and then mulch and soil for the property as well,” he says. “We initially bought it because it had a really long warranty, and not that there were any issues, but I knew that it was covered under warranty and they would be fixed pretty quickly. Bobcat is a known brand so I knew parts and servicing backup wasn’t going anywhere. “This is actually a big thing, because I
had an old tractor from a different brand before this one, which that wasn’t the case with. “I just knew that with Bobcat having a good brand name, the build quality and backup were both going to be good. Supporting cast In addition to the front-end loader and four-in-one bucket, Katie and Ian have also added a host of Daken attachments – another brand stocked by Clark Equipment – including a multi-tine ripper, rotary hoe, slasher, post hole digger and pallet forks. Both of them have found a significant number of uses for the tractor and attachments, with Ian’s work involving a lot of preparation and maintenance around the property. “It’s a general duties farm tractor, so it does the basics of slashing and maintenance,” he says. “If a tree falls down, I can pick it up and move or drag it around. We do feedouts with it from time to time with hay bales for the horses, plus I have a grader blade for it so I can maintain the driveway.

“Where it’s really taken off is after we got a set of rippers, which has been good for garden bed and veggie patch preparation.” For Katie, these attachments have been important for the ongoing work in preparing the flowers as well as opening up expansion opportunities. “A normal farm day usually starts with harvesting flowers in the morning before it gets too hot,” she says. “Once they’re tucked away in the cool room, we get to do the field work such as prepping new beds, planting, making compost or weeding. “We prep our beds with a rotary hoe and we have different techniques depending on the season as sometimes we’re looking to improve drainage or increase water holding capacity. “We make our own compost and the tractor allows us to work with much larger volumes than we could by hand, while the tractor is also our method of transporting and spreading compost around the farm. “I’m also frequently coming up with new projects whether it’s fencing, a new archway, new irrigation. “The tractor allows us to do so much more ourselves, saving us time and money.” These concepts of saving time and money are at the heart of every machine purchase, while Katie is in the unique position of having experienced doing farm work without the mechanical aid of Bobcat’s CT2035 tractor. There will be no turning back now, having subsequently realised the toll the work was taking on her body and how much easier life is thanks to the Bobcat. “I have found that the tractor helps immensely in preserving my two most Katie Knoke has turned a passion into a business
Having a Bobcat tractor has removed plenty of manual labour
precious resources, being time and my physical strength,” she says. “I think as a farmer building a business it’s really important to recognise that you need to do what you can to look after your body and avoid burning out.” Bobcat’s CT2035 tractor can be viewed at www.bobcatofaustralia.com.au while Grown by Lightning Hollows is online at grown_by_lightninghollows on Instagram and www.gblh.com.au.

Double benefit As summer approaches, Veldonas has the pumps and know-how to protect farmers from bushfires Bushfires and frost might seem like contrasting threats for Australian farmers, but one thing they have in common is the potential solution. Both of them can be managed by using a properly designed and installed pump system, which Melbourne-based Veldonas can provide. Having operated for 30 years, Veldonas is more than just a supplier of products. It has the knowledge and experience to help farmers all around Australia protect their most valuable assets. Among the solutions Veldonas offers is an extensive selection of diesel and
electric pressure pumps that are effective at protecting against differing seasonal threats whether the farm is in tropical Queensland or chilly Tasmania. “In the first instance, these pumps provide frost protection,” Veldonas director Gatis Gregors says. “Farmers use pumps to spray water and that actually minimises frost, which is something to consider even though it’s coming up to summer now.” As summer approaches and temperatures rise around the nation, the need to become bushfire
ready takes on particular urgency. “The pumps are also useful coming up into summer for bushfire protection. This can mean setting up similar pumps that you might even use for frost protection for running a ring main around a house or sheds,” Gregors says. “It is important to set these units up for the summer months just in case there’s a bushfire and this allows you to protect the properties and your assets. “Diesel or electric pressure pumps would be suitable for both bushfire and frost protection purposes.”

The Veldonas range includes pumps for agricultural needs around Australia
Veldonas can help farmers mitigate the impact of frost. Image: megphotos/stock.adobe.com
According to Gregors, the advantage of a pressure pump over a volume transfer pump is that water can be delivered at higher pressure, which is a crucial element of both bushfire and frost protection. Extensive experience Veldonas excels by being able to supply purpose-built pump systems for farmers depending on their unique and individual needs.
The company can fit a variety of control systems to its pumps, enabling farmers to protect their equipment and discharge infrastructure while monitoring their system. Features such as automatic starting and stopping via phone or computer enable these to be remotely monitored. Veldonas has spent three decades working with farmers to determine the types of flow rates and pressure
required for their piping installations, along with the distances involved in terms of both the water source and area requiring protection. Having both electric and diesel pressure pump options gives farmers choice, with electric pumps having cost advantages if grid power is available at off-peak rates, while multiple pumps can also run off one electric generator. All of this means Veldonas can supply the ideal pump solution for Australian farmers, whatever their needs and whatever their location. For more information on Veldonas’ pump options for bushfire and frost protection, visit www.veldonas.com.au or call 03 9312 0888.

Rocky River has sponsored Hart Field Day for more than 20 years
Local support Companies sponsoring events is a common theme across many industries, but to maintain a partnership for more than two decades speaks volumes. South Australian machinery dealer Rocky River Ag Services first became a sponsor of the Hart Field Day in 2004 and still describes the event as “important”. Unlike many other field days which are a showcase of machinery and have a strong sales focus, Hart Field Day is about bringing growers together to hear about the latest research from experts, while discussing results of field trials that aim to provide collective benefit for the industry. “We’re purely an agronomic field day and we attract about 600 or 700 people annually where we provide experts in the field to look at the latest research,” Hart Field Day executive officer Sandy Haskell says. Hart’s origins can be traced back about 45 years, with its growth leading to the acquisition of a permanent site in 2000. This site, located about 150km north of
46
Farms & Farm Machinery
Adelaide, hosts the annual field day every September along with other events, while also being a significant agronomic field trial site throughout the year. Hart is a not-for-profit organisation that describes its purpose as being “to provide independent research that is timely, relevant and unbiased, as well as cutting edge and innovative”. Rocky River Ag Services, located in Crystal Brook close to the Hart site, is a CNH Industrial dealer and was named the Flexi-Coil national dealer of the year for the past two years. The dealer is also Hart Field Day’s platinum sponsor and dealer-principal Lynton Smart says there are several reasons for the ongoing partnership. “The partnership we have with the Hart Field Day has been a big part of our business for over 20 years,” he says. “It gives us the opportunity to support the agricultural community and showcase the products and services that we can supply.
“Being one of the biggest agricultural trial sites in SA, it helps to keep the farmers up to date with the best practices and new developments around their farming practices and what is changing.” Real-world benefits Last month’s Hart Field Day included 23 sessions and 30 speakers who shared insights in everything from herbicide tolerance to cereal yields and on-farm biodiesel production. The typical annual calendar includes the ‘getting the crop in’ seminar in March, before a series of events held on-site based around the trial program. These are a winter walk in July, the field day in September and a spring twilight walk in October, along with other workshops and demonstrations. According to Haskell, the financial support offered by Rocky River has meant these events can be offered to the wider agricultural sector without being cost prohibitive for farmers.
Images: Rocky River Ag Services
Rocky River Ag Services’ ongoing support of Hart Field Day speaks to community connection and the importance of growing local agriculture
“The benefit for us is that we can provide that low-cost element to growers with their support,” she says. “Through their support we’re able to offer all of our events except for one at absolutely no cost. “We can distribute our trial results to everyone at no cost and that’s because of the support of commercial sponsors, including Rocky River Ag as our platinum sponsor.” While Rocky River’s support goes directly to Hart, Haskell says farmers around the state, including the dealership’s customers, experience the benefits from the research. “Their support of Hart flows directly to our members, which are predominantly growers and advisors,” she says. “Because we’re a not-for-profit organisation, this money is invested directly back into local research and I think that’s where the benefit lies. “Their support has a direct impact in terms of benefits for growers and whilst their contribution is to Hart, it flows directly to growers.” Hart’s ongoing research, which is designed to offer collective benefit for the industry, is also partially funded via the contributions made by Rocky River. “The other thing their support offers is that most of our research is conducted through work that is funded via RD&E operations,” Haskell says. “We also allocate some of our funds from our commercial sponsorship program to conduct what we call Hart-funded trials. “There is an independence in that sponsors don’t get any input into what those trials are, but their contribution allows us to look at local research gaps and then put that into practice in the field.” For a partnership to remain strong after 20 years also requires cohesion from the parties involved, and Haskell is full of praise for the “amazing” team at Rocky River Ag Services. “The team at Rocky River Ag are amazing to work with,” Haskell says. “I deal directly with Lynton Smart and [admin manager] Angela Seidel and they’re just a dream. “Since they’ve started sponsoring us, the relationship between Hart and Rocky River has been very strong.”

It’s becoming a large part of our business,” he says. Catering for all Beyond the new tracked loaders, HMG has built its reputation by supplying a number of new and used machines to Australian farmers. Across its offering, there are also wheel loaders, wheeled and tracked excavators, wheeled and tracked skid steers, along with others such as telehandlers and motor graders. Regardless of which machinery type is
purchased, HMG customers get the full package for a range of needs. Recent customers have sourced loaders and excavators from HMG to help with jobs around their farm, while others have purchased machinery from HMG to support construction projects. “A lot of people are buying a couple of hundred acres, building their campsites, their roads, and they want to buy a machine that can do all that,” Ragenovich says. “We offer machinery that is a quality build and our customers gain that reassurance by working directly with us.” Ragenovich says the benefit of the HMG brand goes beyond offering exceptional equipment, with the company supplying a level of security which customers enjoy. “We produce our own machinery, which gives us more autonomy and more control,” Ragenovich says. “We offer our own warranty, we have more control over after-sales service, and individual backup.”

Demand has been high for Hercules Machinery Group’s (HMG) new compact tracked loaders since their unveiling earlier this year. The Queensland-based business added the T85 and T100 compact tracked loaders, which have been snapped up by an eager customer base that includes farmers around the nation. This success comes as HMG diversifies its range of equipment to service the agricultural sector along with the likes of earthmoving and construction. For HMG general manager Steven Ragenovich, the reception to the track loaders have been definitive. “The feedback has been all positive, because they’ve sold out,” he says. According to Ragenovich, part of the reason for their popularity is that customers can get the full package of what they need in a tracked loader for a price that won’t break the bank. “They’ve got all the components; they tick all the boxes,” he says. “They have high flow hydraulics, quick hitch equipped, air suspension seat, a genuine Kubota engine, coupled with Danfoss drive motors. “These are for people that want to buy a tracked loader, but they don’t want to pay a king’s ransom for it.”

Real workers Building much of its machinery in Australia and complementing these with specialised imports, Sammut Agricultural Machinery is servicing multiple farming sectors
Core product An important part of Sammut’s agricultural offering is the SpreadKing
52
Farms & Farm Machinery
Sammut has attached a custom-built spreader to a customer’s truck
spreaders, which it has manufactured since the company’s origin. These are one of its biggest sellers thanks to the durability, simplicity and even spread they provide. Their versatility is showcased through the number of materials they
can handle, including manure, soil, fertiliser, lime and gypsum. They have found homes around Australia working across the agricultural spectrum on everything from hobby and turf farms through to broadacre, poultry and vegetable
Images: Sammut
There is plenty that sets Sammut Agricultural Machinery apart and makes the company stand out. Firstly, it retains a strong manufacturing presence from its base in western Sydney where an array of machines, including its popular SpreadKing spreaders, are built. The company has also spent more than three decades as part of the Australian farming landscape and remains familyowned with a philosophy of “service and support like the good old days”. Its extensive range of in-house manufactured equipment is also complemented by acting as the distributor for carefully selected international brands. All of this means Sammut can offer its customers an extensive product range that includes everything from feed mixers to forestry mulchers and turf planters to trucks.
Fimaks provides feed mixers to Sammut customers, including a 20 cubic metre capacity model
farms, along with feedlots and areas as diverse as sports fields and mine sites. Recognising that each of these sectors have different requirements, Sammut’s in-house manufacturing means it is capable of adjusting its spreaders to ensure every buyer has a machine suited to their needs. “We can custom build to suit a wide range of industries,” says Nathan Sammut, who runs daily operations for the company alongside his father and company founder Daniel. “We offer a range of product discharge options in a range of configurations, including side-delivery, rear-feed, and dual-direction.” Options for customisation include the ability to add different tyre sizes or row crop tyres, hungry boards, a small seed box, dual axle, stainless steel bin, a conveyor with mulch spreading attachment and either a single or multi front-row drop. As standard, SpreadKing spreaders are available in sizes from 2 to 30 cubic metres and can suit both dry and liquid spreading. Standard features across the range include dual flow control, fully hydraulic drive with its own system, quick release twin spinners, adjustable height drawbar, horizontal rotary beater, auto door and flight bar conveyor system. They are designed to be low maintenance and provide fast and even spreading. Extra additions While the spreaders are one of Sammut’s biggest sellers, they are not the only
product it manufactures in Australia. Another of its stalwart products is its GearMaster mower range, which includes three-point linkage and folding wing mowers along with a hydraulic catcher. Its 3PL mower is available in sizes from 1.5m through to 3.6m and has become renowned for its strength, durability and precision. A heavy-duty gearbox, driveline components and couplings mean this mower – along with all machines produced by Sammut – is built for demanding conditions. It is fully gear driven with Australian-made gearboxes, while other features include replaceable bushes and pins on all pivot points, contra-rotating blades that eliminate windrow, high tensile blade carriers and stainless steel deck panels. The folding wing mowers are available in sizes from 5.2m through to 12m widths, with its 5.2m and 6.8m models folding to under 2.5m for road transport. Sammut’s hydraulic catcher was developed as a cost effective way of reducing clippings building up on turf farms, with its design allowing operators to mow and catch in one pass. Sammut also manufactures plug and sprig planters along with a sprig overplanter that are designed primarily for turf farms.
Nathan says the most popular Toscano products among Sammut’s customer base are the rotary hoes, stoneburiers, subsoilers, trailing and three-point linkage speed discs plus pasture and forestry mulchers. In the Fimaks range, Nathan says the feed mixers, manure spreaders and slurry tankers are Sammut’s biggest sellers. Another popular brand has been trenching equipment from New Zealand manufacturer TrenchIt. There has been high demand for these products, Nathan says, with drainage applications on farms around Australia having been among the customers looking to these trenchers and attachments. Sammut is also the Australian dealer of Moffett truck-mounted forklifts, which are often sold as a package with the truck itself. These are mounted to the rear of the truck, with Sammut building and fitting the mounting kits, and it enables drivers to handle the unloading of cargo themselves without having to rely on external machinery or support. “New and used Moffett and truck packages are one of our specialties, and are a popular choice across a wide range of industries, including agriculture,” Nathan says.
Wider scope Beyond its own products, Sammut also imports from two Turkish brands – Toscano Agricultural Machinery and Fimaks Agricultural Machinery.
Sammut Agricultural Machinery is located at 67 Joshua Road, Freemans Reach in western Sydney and its full product range is online at www.sammut.com.au

MARKET NEWS
Sprayers star August delivered another down month for tractor sales, the TMA says, although self-propelled sprayer sales enjoyed a strong lift Tractor sales were down again in August, with around 550 machines sold across the country. This was 21 per cent down compared to August 2025 and also means the national total is now down 12 per cent on a year-to-date basis. It appears that farmers are generally experiencing positive conditions, however there remain many headwinds to encouraging investment in machinery. High input costs such as fertiliser and fuel continue to weigh heavily on decision making and, as the industry has seen many times in the past, the continued uncertainty around government tax policy, interest rate expectations and inflationary pressures all serve to dampen demand. There have been several attempts to call the bottom of the current cycle both locally and internationally but a return to positive territory remains some months off. All states reported declines or broke even during August.
Victoria and Tasmania were the only states to be on par with their August 2025 numbers, while the small market of Northern Territory remains the only one ahead on a year-to-date basis. All machine size categories were down as well, with bigger drops in small tractors compared to the high-horsepower units. In other machinery categories, sales of self-propelled sprayers reported a strong lift, being up 36 per cent compared to August last year. There were 42 combine harvesters sold during August, bringing the year-to-date figure to a level which is 40 per cent down on the same time last year.

It looks like being a tough year for combines, while baler sales were in line with the same month last year and are now 9.4 per cent up for the year to date. Sales of out-front mowers dropped during August but remain 3 per cent ahead on a year-to-date basis. OPINION
Labour solutions WAFarmers CEO Trevor Whittington says Australia needs to stop blaming the backpackers when the need for regional labour remains high There is a world of difference between a young backpacker who comes to Australia temporarily to work and travel and someone who arrives on a student visa with the potential to move through the temporary visa system and eventually seek permanent residency. The Working Holiday Maker program provides the flexible workforce regional Australia needs, yet backpackers are being treated as though they are the migration problem while a much larger pipeline runs through our universities and into permanent migration. There is a clear connection between the student system and permanent migration. The Grattan Institute found that four in every ten international students had transitioned to permanent residency within 10 years. So how did those who transitioned from student to permanent get in? In 2024–25, Australia had 185,001 places in the permanent Migration Program. Of those, 132,148 were for skilled migrants and 52,500 were in the family stream. That means the vast majority of people we deliberately select to stay permanently are coming through the skilled stream. If a significant number of those people first arrived as international students, then what we are teaching those students matters. Now look at what international students are studying. In 2024, there were 155,929 international higher-education enrolments in Management and Commerce and another 97,220 in IT. Compare that with 45,066 in Health and 41,733 in Engineering. That tells you something about where the student migration pipeline is concentrated. If we are going to use temporary migration as a pathway into permanent Australia, shouldn’t we be putting more emphasis on training up the people we actually need? Business and IT aren’t useless degrees, but Australia needs doctors and electrical engineers more than it needs these areas.

Regional needs In my view, too many of these graduates are ending up competing for jobs outside the highly skilled occupations we actually need. Give us the tradies, doctors, nurses, engineers, teachers, vets and people who can build things, repair things and keep regional Australia operating. Perhaps more importantly, give us people prepared to work outside the capital cities. We already know there are international students prepared to pay enormous sums to obtain Australian qualifications in professions where there is a genuine workforce need. If Australia wants to be an education superpower, then let’s actually become one. Let’s compete for the best students in the heavy sciences and applied health professions – medicine, dentistry, engineering, nursing, veterinary science and other areas where Australia has a demonstrated need – and make the connection between those qualifications and Australia’s workforce much clearer. For those who graduate in high-demand professions, give them a clear pathway to permanent Australia — but make them earn it where Australia needs them. If a doctor, nurse, engineer, vet or teacher wants permanent residency, give them a genuine regional pathway if they
Trevor Whittington is CEO of WAFarmers
are prepared to spend five years working in regional Australia after graduation, subject to the normal migration and registration requirements. That would tie migration to where the workers are actually needed, rather than continuing to funnel people into the capital cities. At the other end of the labour market, keep the Working Holiday Makers coming. Who cares if the numbers hit 300,000, 400,000 or even 500,000 a year? If they are competing for jobs and accommodation in the cities, then simply restrict them to regional work – harvest the crops, drive the machinery, work in the packing sheds – and let them move on when the season finishes, but invite them all back for a second and third year. Those that do three years should go to the top of the pile for a future dedicated agricultural visa and permanent residency pathway – one that allows in semi-skilled farm workers: the kids from Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia, Italy, France and the UK who did three years on the tractor. We need them as much as we need foreign-born doctors and nurses across rural Australia.

Sheep producers were highlighted as the nation’s most optimistic farming sector. Image: Ace55/stock.adobe.com
Confidence boost Optimism around seasonal conditions and commodity prices have led to a national increase in farmer confidence Rabobank’s latest Rural Confidence Survey has revealed Australian farmers are feeling more confident than three months ago. Optimism about commodity prices, along with seasonal conditions being better than expected, has removed much of the negative sentiment from the previous survey. Every state recorded a lift in sentiment, with Rabobank group executive for Country Banking Australia Marcel van Doremaele highlighting multiple reasons for the national boost. “Despite ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and Black Sea, sentiment has been steadied by recovery of key supply chains and stronger commodity signals,” he says. “Domestic urea supply is now sitting in a more comfortable position, reducing the risk of fertiliser shortages and easing concerns around local supply constraints heading into the end of the season. “Seasonal conditions have improved through August compared to July, with rainfall supporting winter crops and pastures across parts of southern and eastern Australia and this has helped stabilise production outlook.” Much of the improved sentiment came via farmers who previously expected conditions to worsen now expecting them to be relatively unchanged. In Rabobank’s previous survey, 58 per cent expected a worsening in the next year but this figure had now plummeted to 32 per cent. The largest response was that conditions would remain unchanged,

with 52 per cent now expecting this, compared to just 28 per cent last time. There was also a slight increase in those who anticipate conditions to improve, with this group rising from 10 per cent to 12 per cent. Elevated input costs plus energy security were the two biggest concerns still cited, however the latest survey had fewer farmers than before highlighting this. “Although input costs continue to be the dominant factor weighing on confidence this quarter, and cost pressures remain elevated, farming businesses have experienced the initial price shocks,” van Doremaele says. Government intervention and policies were one area which had increased concern compared to previous surveys. South Australia recorded the strongest improvement in sentiment and is the only state where net confidence returned to positive territory, Rabobank says, making its farmers the most optimistic in the country.
“Beneficial rain fell through winter across most regions of SA, supporting the increase in optimism of both grain growers and livestock producers coming into spring,” van Doremaele says. Another cause for optimism came via more farmers having a greater appetite to invest in their farm businesses during the next year. It revealed 28 per cent of farmers plan to increase their spending during the next year compared to 21 per cent last time, while only 12 per cent of farmers intend to reduce investment. Sheep producers were the nation’s most optimistic sector during this quarter, with solid market conditions for both meat and wool highlighted as reasons for this. Beef, dairy and grain were among the other sectors which experienced increases in sentiment, with van Doremaele highlighting reasons for grain grower positivity. “The market is currently being shaped by wheat availability, rather than wheat production, which is influencing price,” he says. “Although there’s abundant supply in Russia and Ukraine, export logistics through the Black Sea are the challenge which, in the short term, is supportive for world wheat values. “These ongoing Black Sea disruptions also provide some support for canola. “Australian growers are keeping an eye on how disruptions to supply chains for Ukrainian rapeseed and sunflower oil, as well as global energy and vegetable oil demands, play out in terms of canola pricing.”

New direction Artificial intelligence will be used to grade Australian lentils and chickpeas commercially
Cropify’s Opal screen analyses images of the grain sample to grade its quality
This harvest will feature the technology on those crop types for the first time, changing a process which has relied on trained grain graders. The graders have visually inspected samples for defects, contamination and
overall quality, with their assessments determining how they are graded and how much growers are paid. Adelaide-based agtech company Cropify has created a technology which analyses samples in minutes and delivers what it says is fast and consistent grading while also keeping digital records of every load. Grain Trade Australia’s trading standards committee has now endorsed the technology as being suitable for commercial consideration, which Cropify CEO and co-founded Anna Falkiner says is an important step towards the wider industry experiencing its benefits. “Every truckload of lentils or chickpeas delivered at harvest represents a season’s work and a year’s income for a grower,” she says. “The grade it receives determines its value, so sellers need confidence that every assessment is accurate, consistent and objective. “The committee’s endorsement gives the industry confidence that AI is maturing and is a credible option for the grading of grain.”
Cropify co-founders Andrew Hannon and Anna Falkiner in a field of lentils in South Australia’s mid north
Cropify completed its first commercial lentil harvest in 2025 and expects to deploy up to 25 of its Opal units during this harvest as it expands into chickpeas. The company has more crops in development and also has plans to move into international markets, while a realtime quality management dashboard has been launched, giving visibility of grading results across multiple sites.
Nbryo’s cattle breeding technology has received the first grant from a Queensland agtech fund. Image: will/stock.adobe.com
Tech investment A cattle breeding technology startup is the first recipient of a Queensland government innovation grant Queensland based agricultural biotechnology company Nbryo will receive a $2 million grant to accelerate its advanced cattle breeding technology. The company is the first recipient of a grant from the $30 million ‘Sowing the Seeds of Farming Innovation Fund’ made available by the Queensland government. Nbryo’s technology can reduce seven years of selective breeding into seven days, with CEO Paul Niven saying the government’s fund gives Queensland an “incredible opportunity” to lead the world in agtech innovation. “We’re proud to showcase the work being undertaken at Nbryo and the role advanced reproductive technologies can play in helping make better herds faster,” he says.

“Translating scientific innovation into practical outcomes for farmers is at the core of our mission. “Every improvement in reproductive efficiency has the potential to deliver significant benefits for producers, the supply chain and the broader agricultural sector.” The government’s $30 million fund is managed by Queensland Investment Corporation and was established to leverage its “commercial investment expertise to back innovative businesses that deliver real benefits in on-farm productivity, profitability and sustainability”. The fund aims to help innovations move beyond pilot projects into commercially scalable enterprises that will benefit agriculture in the state.
Queensland primary industries minister Tony Perrett says the Nbryo investment shows the fund is delivering exactly what it was designed for. “Queensland is home to almost half Australia’s beef herd, and this investment will help accelerate technologies that improve access to superior genetics, reduce costs and support a more productive and profitable beef and dairy sector,” he says. “As a beef producer myself, I know how important it is to maximise productivity and make every dollar count. “Nbryo is developing technology that has the potential to make advanced breeding tools more accessible and affordable for producers, helping them improve herd performance and profitability. “The Sowing the Seeds of Farming Innovation Fund is about backing Queensland innovators with great ideas and helping them turn those ideas into practical solutions that deliver real benefits for producers.” Applications for grant funding can be made by visiting https://www.qic.com/ Sowing-the-Seeds

INDUSTRY NEWS
Targeting growth Australia’s horticulture industry has launched an ambitious strategy to double the value of exports in the next five years Hort Innovation’s new strategy includes a goal of doubling Australia’s horticulture exports to $7 billion by 2031. The ‘Strategy 2031’ was developed after extensive consultation with growers and industry stakeholders, with Hort Innovation CEO Brett Fifield saying export growth emerged as one of the strongest themes from more than 1,000 conversations. “Our strategy reflects those collective priorities,” he says. “Australian horticulture has an incredible story to tell, and the world is increasingly recognising the quality, safety and sustainability of the produce our growers deliver. “Reaching $7 billion in exports by 2031 is ambitious, but Australian horticulture has shown what’s possible when the
industry works towards a shared goal. “This is an opportunity to unlock the next phase of growth.” Australia had a record $3.5 billion in fresh horticulture exports during 2024-25, which represented a 13 per cent growth on the previous year and 126 per cent growth over the past decade. Continuing this momentum will be required to achieve this goal, with Costa Group chief operating office Christian Parsons saying export growth will be critical to ensuring the industry’s long-term strength. “On current production trends, export growth is critical to maintaining a viable and sustainable horticulture industry,” he says. “The ambition to grow exports to $7 billion by 2031 reflects both the
opportunity and the challenge ahead. “Global demand for premium Australian produce continues to grow, and with ongoing investment in market access, industry capability and trade relationships, we are well placed to build on that momentum over the next five years.” Strengthening Australia’s position in China, which is currently the nation’s largest horticulture export market, was identified as one opportunity for growth along with building on high-value markets such as Japan. Hort Innovation’s Strategy 2031 also sets a long-term direction for investment in productivity, innovation, market access and grower capability. In addition to highlighting export growth, the strategy prioritises investment in areas such as automation, artificial intelligence, climate resilience, crop protection, technology and production efficiency to help growers make more informed business decisions and improve productivity.

Heat is on A Queensland government research project aims to reduce sorghum production risk by turning up the heat. Six purpose-built chambers are being used at the Central Queensland Smart Cropping Centre in Emerald to study how sorghum is impacted by high night-time temperatures. Sorghum is a grain used for stockfeed or products like beer and gluten-free flour. The Department of Primary Industries researchers hope their work will uncover the impacts of heat stress on the sorghum crop. Through this, they aim to identify practical strategies to reduce production risk for Queensland farmers and develop better grain and pulse farming methods.
“By leveraging advanced technologies like in-field heat chambers, we are equipping Queensland farmers with the knowledge to better understand and manage the impacts of an increasingly variable climate,” Queensland primary industries minister Tony Perrett says. “We are proud to partner with industry to invest in research that delivers practical management options growers can use now and into the future.” The six heat chambers have been commissioned and designed specifically for Queensland conditions. They are the largest of their kind in the world and can simulate higher night-time temperatures by raising conditions inside the chamber by up to three degrees.

Cheese has long been the staple of Australian dairy production. Image: Leah-Anne Thompson/stock.adobe.com
Dairy value Australia’s “cheese-centric” dairy industry is looking to higher-value uses of milk protein – such as nutritional supplements – as national milk production remains low, Rabobank says in newly-published research The specialist agribusiness bank says the structural decline in Australia’s milk production over the past two decades has seen available milk protein fall by approximately 30 per cent since 2015, which is re-shaping the country’s dairy product mix. Where cheese has long been the main focus of Australian dairy production, premium protein products – including protein powders, high-protein beverages and yoghurt – “increasingly offer greater value uplift than traditional cheese production”, it says. In the report, the bank’s RaboResearch division says “the strategic question for the industry is shifting from how to process more milk to how to extract more value from a limited pool of milk protein”. Report author and Rabobank senior dairy analyst Michael Harvey says the

key strategic challenge for the dairy sector is determining what mix of product streams create the greatest value from an increasingly scarce pool of dairy protein. “Overall, it is important to ensure milk protein is directed to the product stream, customer segment or market that generates the highest return,” he says.
Rabobank senior dairy analyst Michael Harvey. Image: Rabobank
“While cheese remains the dominant use for Australian milk ahead of drinking milk and a critical foundation of the dairy sector, ‘protein optimisation’ through use in high-protein products is emerging as the next growth frontier.” Although the drivers of future value growth are changing, domestic cheese demand remains a stable and important base for the dairy sector, the report says. Cheese is a staple in Australian diets, Harvey says, with per capita consumption of approximately 10 kilograms annually. “The domestic cheese market exceeds 270,000 tonnes, with growth driven mainly by retail, where volumes increased from 130,000 tonnes to 202,000 tonnes between 2015 and 2025,” he says. However, as the cheese category matures, this demand growth is likely to moderate. Capturing value from whey protein – a co-product in cheese manufacturing – has helped support returns in the cheese stream in recent years, the report says, with global whey prices having been on an extended rally, underpinned by “robust demand from sports nutrition, active lifestyles and health-focused consumers”.

“These conditions impact pasture and shrub growth, soil stability and overall feed consistency, which can then impact sheep performance, so we are exploring integrated, long-term solutions. “By integrating adapted sheep with more resilient feed base systems, we aim to create more stable and productive farming systems. “This includes improving feed consistency, creating better microclimates for livestock, and supporting overall landscape health.” The project has been funded through a federal government grant and will run until October 2030, with trials already established across South Australia, Western Australia and New South Wales. Adelaide University’s Roseworthy campus and the Muresk Institute near Northam in WA are two of the research

Helping sheep farmers to thrive under drought conditions is the focus of a new federal government-funded research project. The ‘Climate Resilient Sheep Systems’ project is being led by Adelaide University and Perth-based Murdoch University, together with researchers, farmers and industry partners around the country. It will investigate climate-resilient sheep genetics for heat and drought resilience characteristics, along with tactics to improve drought-tolerant pastures, shrubs and trees to improve feed availability, grazing landscapes and animal welfare. “Sheep enterprises in many low rainfall regions are being increasingly challenged by drought and extreme heat,” Adelaide University project lead Associate Professor William van Wettere says.

Universities from two states have teamed up for a research project to improve the resilience and productivity of sheep during drought
sites, while there will be collaboration with ram breeders throughout Australia. It will also focus on farmer-led research and include at least 26 regional trial sites on operating farms. The trials will identify key traits that are genetically linked to heat tolerance and drought adaptation in sheep, with researching to collect detailed data across both environmental and livestock factors such as soil health, vegetation performance, animal behaviour, heat and drought tolerance and reproductive outcomes. “This project is about understanding the whole system, from soils and plants through to animal performance and genetics,” Murdoch University project lead Professor Andrew Thompson says. “By bringing all these elements together, we can identify strategies that farmers can adopt to manage climate change and make real gains in resilience and productivity. “Projects like this are critical to ensuring Australia’s low rainfall livestock systems continue to be productive into the future.”

Safer lifting
Drake Group maintenance supervisor Buchanan Pinder. Images: TMHA
Toyota scissor lifts are helping a Queensland trailer manufacturer make its processes safer and more efficient Two former schoolmates are working together to help a Queensland trailer manufacturer pioneer new assembly techniques to make its processes safer and more efficient. Buchanan Pinder is the group maintenance supervisor of the Drake Group, a family-owned Australian manufacturer of specialised transport equipment, based in Wacol. Chevy Date is the Queensland major account manager of Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA), in nearby Larapinta. The pair kept in touch after graduating 12 years ago from high school, and have introduced Toyota scissor lifts as a replacement for scaffolding at Drake Group to provide a safer and more flexible platform for the assembly of more than 300 heavy-duty trailers per year. “The industry standard for aboveground assembly is a scaffolding system,” Pinder says. “Its use is limited in several areas. Firstly, in terms of its ability to provide close-up access to machinery under construction, requiring operators to lean out over open space to weld or affix components. “The fixed scaffolding also means heavy equipment has to be physically lifted up to the platform from ground level, sometimes as high as four metres. “Additionally, scaffolding has a life span, and it can become unstable over a period of use.”
The alternative of using platform ladders is equally compromised. “Across the board, safety is a big issue,” he says. The TMHA solution devised by Buchanan and Chevy has replaced both methods with a fleet of four purpose-specified SC06E battery electric scissor lifts. The compact scissor lifts can be easily positioned alongside the trailer in construction, providing a stable work platform with far greater access to all componentry.
Toyota’s SC06E scissor lift has a compact width of just 0.76m
Equipment and components can be loaded on the ground and then lifted up to the work site position. The SC06E has an overall width of 0.76m, suitable for manoeuvring the close aisle spaces on the Drake Group’s partial assembly line. It can be driven at full working height of 5.9m and maximum platform height of 3.9m so the operator can move to new positions as required. The Drake Group is looking to achieve significant quality and productivity improvements from the new assembly solution. Its three separate facilities in the Wacol area are now able to access the Toyota SC06E fleet on an as-required basis, eliminating the need for duplication of fixed scaffolding. Pinder says a major advantage has been in operator morale. “The scissor lift solution has provided a far more workable environment, and it is demonstrably safer,” he says. “Of The Drake Group’s 240 employees at our Wacol plant, more than 30 have completed VOCs [verification of competency] in order to use the scissor lifts. “Response has been overwhelmingly positive.” The Drake Group now has more than 20 pieces of TMHA equipment in service.
