FROM THE EDITOR RDO Equipment has the machinery and expertise to help John Deere customers. See page 14.
Welcome Welcome to another packed edition of Farms & Farm Machinery, featuring stories showcasing the full breadth of Australian agriculture. I have written this before, but there is always something about attending AgQuip which leaves me positive about the future. It always provides the opportunity to catch up with old friends in the industry, speak to readers and enjoy a steak sandwich while discovering how many exciting machines are shaping what comes next. A full wrap of the machinery highlights from this year’s AgQuip is included in this edition. One company we were able to catch up with at the event was Roo Attachments, who features on this month’s cover. Focusing on their high-dump buckets, we tell the story of the manufacturer’s evolution and why its products have been so popular with Australian farmers. Achmea Farm Insurance was another company at AgQuip, with a vintage ute being an eye-catching addition to its stand and we hear all the details of its backstory and why it was there. Customer testimonials are again at the forefront of this edition, starting with a Western Australian family whose purchase of a Bobcat tractor and UTV from Clark Equipment has allowed them to combine work and play. We also hear from a Digger King customer whose mini excavator purchase is helping with maintenance jobs on a Queensland farm. Speaking to the experts who know the products inside out also provides a unique

insight, with multiple examples in this edition. Alliance has launched two new agricultural tyres to the local market and we speak to the company about what these will bring. Einbock’s Grass Manager is a core product for Vin Rowe Farm Machinery, with the distributor sharing why customers have taken to the machine for pasture management. Dieci is soon to launch a new telehandler, the Agri Max 72.10 GD, and we get the lowdown from national sales manager Bob Mules about what this will bring to customers. Two major dealership groups – RDO Equipment and TTMI – are both put in the spotlight, showcasing what makes them unique. We also highlight Bourgault’s recently released ParaLink Dual Xtreme opener, along with the Shell Lubricants from Macro Distributor Viva Energy, plus a profile on World Class Finance. Our industry news section also has a wrap-up of the Australian Cotton Conference and its award winners, along with several research updates. Happy reading!

Wheel loaders are an area of growth within the agricultural market, according to JCB’s John Smith. Image: JCB
Direct links Australian agriculture has been described as an important market for JCB, with multiple company figures also highlighting the opportunities that a new distribution partnership will present Getting closer to customers is the aim of JCB’s new distribution partnership in Australia, with the local agricultural market being a particular focus for the manufacturer. Australia is a “critical market” for the British machinery giant, according to international sales director José Luis Gonçalves, who believes there are strong opportunities to further grow JCB’s local presence. JCB has launched a new strategy for Australian distribution, which involves removing a link of the supply chain by working directly with its network of dealers. A new partnership with Adaptalift – which will cover metropolitan markets and some regional areas – will be supported by JCB’s existing network of agricultural dealers. JCB leaders travelled to Australia for two major events in July – the opening of Adaptalift’s Melbourne facility and a regional dealer conference in Sydney – where they highlighted the importance of the local agricultural market and promised farmers would see the benefits of the new setup.
6
Farms & Farm Machinery
“Australia is a critical market where we need to be successful,” Gonçalves says. “Having the strong dealer network, as we have in Adaptalift and our other dealers in the rural and agricultural operations across the country, will be the main difference and drive to be successful here. “Australia is a constant and solid market and that is why it’s so important for us to bring the right solutions and the right products to be a strong contender. “Right now in Australia we have a strong position, particularly on telehandlers, but there is so much more that we can do.” Farming focus JCB covers multiple market sectors, with its agricultural product range complemented by a strong presence in construction. Two of the most popular machinery types among Australian farmers are its Fastrac tractors and Loadall telehandlers, both of which are well established. The Fastrac range received an upgrade in recent years, with the first models featuring the manufacturer’s iCON technology suite arriving Down Under in late 2022.
Farmers are set to gain a third model within this range, with the newly-launched 6300 to slot in between the existing 4220 and 8330 tractors. This tractor, which has a 335hp (250kW) engine, 11,000kg rear lift capacity and a 66km/h maximum speed, has already received overseas acclaim by winning Tractor of the Year in the sustainable category at Agritechnica last November, and the Machine of the Year gold award ahead of the LAMMA Exhibition in January. JCB’s managing director for agriculture John Smith – who knows the Australian market well having previously been JCB Pacific regional manager – travelled from the UK for the July events and emphasised the importance of Fastrac tractors in the company’s agricultural offering. “The Fastrac is the flagship of our ag product range,” he says. “High speed appeals to farmers in the Australian market because of the extensive nature of agriculture and the distances that they travel between sites and on farms with fields that are huge. “Comfort, safety and productivity are

the benefits that farmers in Australia have always looked to with Fastrac and that’s why it’s carved out a place in the market.” His thoughts on the Fastrac are backed up by JCB’s Australian regional manager for agriculture, James Hollis, who believes many of its features including a high travel speed are suited to what Australian farmers need. “The sparse geography of Australia really suits the attributes of our Fastrac machine,” he says. “It’s a space that we’re actively passionate about being in because we believe that we’ve got a fantastic product that can answer a lot of those challenges that the Australian farmer would face.” Smith’s extensive experience working in Australia means he is acutely aware of what local farmers need and highlighted wheel loaders as a growing asset alongside JCB’s tractors and telehandlers. “As farming becomes consolidated, with perhaps fewer farmers but farming larger areas and more intensive farming like feedlots and big livestock operations, we think our wheel loader and shovel range has got a part to play in that,” he says. “We’ve got the traditional telehandler, which is the all-rounder in materials handling for handling inputs and outputs, but the wheel loader is the larger machine for moving more materials quickly. “We’ve got some gaps in our range, and
we’re always developing new products with innovative features. “This means we’ve got an option to bring in more models that we believe will suit customers’ needs in Australia.” Supporting customers JCB’s recent ending of their previous distribution agreement has meant building a more direct connection with its national dealer network. Hollis says removing this link from the
supply chain means JCB will be one step closer to Australian customers, including farmers, which will bring a host of benefits. “The main focus for us is all about being closer to our customers,” he says. “I think the dealers will benefit from a direct relationship with the OEM because they’ll get better response times, better parts and service availability and again that direct relationship with JCB who are a family business. “Many of our dealers are also family

businesses so they share a similar ethos of company values that we do and then, by extension, that cascades down to their customers as well. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our customers and for our dealers to get closer to the brand. “We’re really excited to be investing in the region and giving the customers the best products, the best distribution, and being much closer to those customers.” Adaptalift has come on board to play an important role in JCB’s metropolitan distribution, along with some regional areas where it has an existing presence such as Griffith in New South Wales and Bunbury in Western Australia. JCB’s existing regional dealer network will also continue to support the brand’s agricultural products in their respective catchment areas, with 17 businesses represented at the regional dealer conference in Sydney. “We got the chance to talk to them about our new arrangements in Australia – dealing direct, reducing the number of links in the chain, being closer to the customer and the benefits that will really deliver to our customers and end users, and that’s what it’s all about,” Smith says. Smith says the customer experience for Australian farmers will be bolstered due to this direct relationship between JCB

and its dealers, with an increased level of aftersales support being one of the company’s goals. “There will be more regional service support to support the dealers, and the dealer will be closer to the factory in effect because we’ll been dealing directly with them,” he says. “As a consequence of that, we feel that service and backup and support
will translate into tangible benefits for the customer. “We’ll have a deeper relationship with our dealers, and the support that they offer the customer will be better as a consequence. “We’ve been in Australia for a long time, but we think we can perform much better.” For more information, visit www.jcb.com/en-AU

Roo Attchments’ stick rakes are suited to large machinery such as excavators
With more than a decade of manufacturing experience, an extensive attachment range and a growing footprint around Australia, Roo Attachments has built its business around a straightforward philosophy: provide quality attachments at competitive prices and have them available when customers need them. The Australian-owned company operates across agriculture and construction, designing and supplying attachments for tractors, telehandlers, skid steers, excavators and wheel loaders. Business development manager Rob Price says Roo’s combination of manufacturing capability and personal customer service has been central to its growth. “We’re big enough to have the manufacturing capability and stock behind us, but we’re still small enough to care about the individual customer,” he says. “When a farmer needs an attachment, quite often they need it now.” Buckets of benefits Among Roo Attachments’ agricultural range, one product the company believes has significant potential for Australian farmers is its high-dump bucket. High-dump buckets have long provided a practical solution for operators needing additional dump height and reach, particularly when loading high-sided trucks and hoppers. The problem for many farmers has traditionally been the price. Roo believes its manufacturing model
has changed that equation, allowing it to offer a well-designed, quality high-dump bucket at a price that puts the attachment within reach of many farmers who may previously have struggled to justify one. “For a long time, high-dump buckets have been out of reach for a lot of farmers because they were simply too expensive,” Price says. “We’ve been able to bring that price
down significantly while maintaining the quality and specification we expect. “That’s opened them up to farmers who previously wouldn’t have considered owning one.” Designed for wheel loaders, Roo’s highdump buckets are available in capacities from 2 to 10 cubic metres, allowing them to be matched to a broad range of machines and applications. Roo Attachments’ high-dump buckets are designed to make loading into trucks easy
TradeFarmMachinery.com.au
11
Central to the design is the way the bucket tips. The high-dump bucket pivots forward with the pivot point located at the front edge of the bucket. As it tips forward, the design effectively increases the loader’s dump height and forward reach, allowing material to be discharged over the sides of high trucks, into hoppers or over other obstacles that can be difficult to reach with a conventional GP bucket. Roo Attachments director Tim Moss says the practical benefit became clear during a recent conversation with a farmer considering purchasing one. “Without the extra dump height, his alternative was to build loading ramps so he could get the wheel loader about 1.5m higher to load his trucks,” Moss says. “With the high-dump bucket, the loader stays on level ground. You can drive up beside the truck and load it wherever you need to. “You’re not tied to a loading ramp in one location. It makes the whole operation much simpler, more mobile and more versatile.” For farmers regularly handling grain, fertiliser, feed, manure and other bulk materials, that flexibility can save considerable time and eliminate the need for dedicated loading infrastructure. Price says the combination of design, quality and affordability is the key. “The difference between loading a high-sided truck or hopper with a high-dump bucket and trying to do the same job with a standard GP bucket can be night and day,” he says. “The lower price hasn’t come from reducing the specification. It comes from the way we manufacture and the volumes we produce.
Roo Attachments products are popular in various Australian farming applications
12
Farms & Farm Machinery
Roo Attachments’ business development manager Rob Price was at this year’s AgQuip
“We’ve made what was previously a fairly expensive specialised attachment a realistic proposition for a lot more farmers.” High-dump buckets are only one part of Roo’s agricultural range. Stick rakes and post rammers have also proven popular, with post rammers selling out at each of the past two AgQuip field days. “Our post rammers are very highquality units, which are cost effective and accessible to farmers, yet also robust enough for contractors, while our stick rakes are incredibly useful for clearing and maintaining rural properties,” Price says. Passion for quality While Roo’s attachments are manufactured in China, the company is Australian-owned and controls its manufacturing operation rather than simply sourcing finished products from an independent overseas manufacturer. It’s a distinction summed up by Roo’s message: “buy direct from the manufacturer, not just the importer.” Roo owns its attachment designs and determines the specifications and quality
standards used during production. That direct manufacturing model also removes additional layers from the supply chain, helping the company offer products such as its high-dump buckets at more competitive prices. “We don’t hide the fact that we manufacture in China, but we’re an Australian company and we control the manufacturing ourselves,” Moss says. “We’re not simply choosing an attachment from somebody else’s catalogue and importing it. “We control the design, steel specification, fabrication standards and quality assurance right through the manufacturing process. “Even details such as the welding consumables are specified by us, and we use Japanese Kobelco welding wire because we’ve found it gives us the quality and consistency we’re looking for. “That control allows us to maintain the quality we want while keeping our pricing competitive. Everything is then checked again here in Australia before it goes to the customer.” Roo’s high-dump buckets are also powder coated, providing a durable finished surface suited to demanding working environments. For Moss, who grew up on a farm, the focus ultimately comes back to producing equipment that will stand up to the work expected of it. “Farmers don’t buy these products to sit in a shed looking good,” he says. “They buy them to work, and they expect them to do that job reliably.” Stock when it matters Roo has also invested heavily in holding stock in Australia rather than requiring customers to wait for an attachment to be manufactured and shipped after ordering. Its main Port Kembla facility near Sydney currently holds more than 500 tonnes of stock, representing approximately 3,000 individual items

ready for dispatch, complemented by the company’s presence in Melbourne and Brisbane, along with its Western Australian operations. “We have huge stock holdings ready to go,” Price says. “If you rang me for a stick rake today, I can sell you one for a wheel loader, skid steer, tractor or almost any size excavator, and we’ve got them sitting here in stock. “A customer recently asked how quickly we could get a piece of equipment to him. I said, ‘If we complete the order today, I’ll ship it tomorrow.’ “That’s important to farmers because when they need something, they generally need it now.” Roo’s freight volumes also enable the company to negotiate competitive transport rates and dispatch attachments throughout Australia. Growing with customers Roo continues to expand its Australian footprint, strengthening its ability to service customers in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia, while the business also works with
an extensive dealer network throughout rural Australia. “If you’re buying a tractor, wheel loader, skid steer or excavator from a considerable number of dealers in rural Australia, there’s a good chance they’ll already know Roo Attachments or be able to supply our products,” Price says. For Price, one of the strongest measures of success is seeing customers return. “At field days I regularly have people come up, that I’ve sold something to previously and say, ‘That bucket you sold me has been great. Now I need a hydraulic grab and I want another Roo’,” he says.
“That’s the relationship we want with our customers. For Roo Attachments, the high-dump bucket demonstrates how its manufacturing model, quality standards, Australian stock holdings and competitive pricing come together. “A high-dump bucket can completely change the way you load trucks and hoppers,” Moss says. “The capability has always been there. What we’ve been able to do is make that capability affordable to a much wider range of farmers.” For more information about the range, visit www.rooattachments.com

Alliance showcased its new range at this year’s FarmFest in Queensland. Image: Alliance
Twin additions Alliance is adding new options for Australian farmers with a feature-packed tractor tyre soon to be joined by a sugarcane haulage tyre Alliance, a leading global brand of agricultural and off-highway tires – a part of Yokohama-ATG, is expanding its Australian range with two new tyres. These are the Agri Nova, a next-generation bias tractor tyre, and the Alliance 430, a sugarcane haulage tyre that is currently under development and would be available to purchase for Australian farmers soon. Agri Nova is the next generation bias tyre designed for light-to-medium duty tractors that addresses the varied needs of modern farming, including superior traction, improved driving comfort, superior aesthetics and long service life. Alliance’s offering will also soon include the Alliance 430, a sugarcane haulage tyre that is still under development but had a display model at the FarmFest field days held in Queensland in June. Alliance national sales manager Kuntal Chatterjee says the bias tyre market has been neglected in terms of
16
Farms & Farm Machinery
new products, with the alternative of radial tyres increasing in popularity. This created an opportunity for Alliance to invest in a new bias tyre model, which includes all of the latest technologies sought after by farmers. “In Australia 40 to 45 per cent of sales still happens in bias tyres because it will take some time for the market to completely shift from a bias to a radial platform,” Chatterjee says. “Alliance has also come up with new age radial tyres to move the needle and become an enabler in the agriculture tyre segment. “For Agri Nova in particular, we have taken some of the inputs and characteristics of radial tyres and have implemented in this particular pattern. “It has all the latest techniques and technologies and price-wise it falls in a bias price positioning, but we are providing a tyre which is more towards the radial top-class tyres in terms of its technology, performance and durability.”
For all uses Alliance says the Agri Nova’s advanced lug pattern helps to ensure exceptional traction, smooth self-cleaning, stability and driving comfort, making it ideal for the various terrains used by Australian farmers. A strong nylon carcass enables the Agri Nova to withstand tough field conditions, while an increased number of lugs and its square profile help to both minimise soil compaction and enhance the operator experience when driving on roads. Chatterjee says striking the balance between field and road use was an important consideration when developing Agri Nova, with Alliance knowing farmers will use their tyres in both environments. Bias tyres have been more traditionally suited to use in the paddocks, he says, but Agri Nova acts as a ‘hybrid’ tyre that is designed to excel in both environments. “The patterns and the kind of compounds we use for bias tyres are more likely to be used in fields and not
on roads, but we have actually mixed the compound when it goes to Agri Nova. “It will not heat up as much as the other bias tyres generally do and the performance and the experience a driver will have using these Agri Nova tyres on the road will be far better than a normal bias tyre.” Built to please The aesthetics of a tyre might not be immediately at the forefront of every farmer’s mind, but the design and the aesthetic sidewall – which Alliance describes as ‘premium’ – is another aspect which Chatterjee highlights. “The look of Agri Nova will make you feel it is a different kind of tyre because it matches more of the latest radial patterns which have come in the market,” he says. “Aesthetically it is far superior to other bias tyres out there in the market, because most bias tyre designs are 10 to 15 years old, so their aesthetics are totally different and they are not that appealing.” Durability and long-term reliability are two other areas that Alliance highlights
with the Agri Nova, which is backed by a seven-year warranty. It has already spent time in the Australian market, including appearances at major field days in recent months, and this leaves Chatterjee in no doubt about its suitability and appeal for Australian agriculture. “It is one of the best tyres on the market,” he says. “There has been good feedback already and we are very excited to see how this tyre performs. “We are confident that it will make a very good impression in the market and build a strong reputation going forward.” For sugarcane fields While Agri Nova is designed to have mass appeal for Australian tractor drivers, Alliance’s other innovation has been built for a specific need after it identified a gap in the market. Sugarcane is among the most specialised sectors of Australian farming, with its machinery often purpose-built for the sector’s unique demands. This extends to the tyres powering the

machines, including the new Alliance 430, which is designed for sugarcane haulage. “Once the sugarcane is harvested, they are shipped from the field to the cranes where they’re taken to different parts of Australia,” Chatterjee says. “The movement from that harvester to that crane is done by machines using these tyres, which is why we call them sugarcane haulage tyres.”

Alliance 430 is still under development, with the tyre expected to properly hit the local market later this year. One tyre has been developed specifically for display and was first shown at the FarmFest field days in Toowoomba in June, before forming part of a roadshow to Alliance dealers. “We have used this tyre for roadshows in the major sugarcane sectors of Australia such as Townsville and Hervey Bay, and the feedback so far has been very good,” Chatterjee says. “We have taken it around to all the key dealers and the first feedback from everybody who has tested or seen it has been that this is the best tyre which has come up and this will rock the market.” The Alliance 430 includes hexagonal step blocks, which the manufacturer says provides uniform contact with the ground for better grip and longer tyre life. Tie bars connect the blocks to reduce stress and ensure high speed stability and durability. An open groove design includes
18

wider grooves, a feature which ensures better self-cleaning and reduced slippage in soft soil. Dual bead construction ensures zero slippage even in high-torque applications. In developing the tyre, Chatterjee says Alliance recognised this was a market sector that was under-represented. The 430 brings together all the features Alliance believes are important for a sugarcane haulage tyre, while addressing any issues experienced by operators trying to complete the job with alternative tyres. “We can very confidently say this is a tyre which has all the unique propositions of current tyres present in this segment and we have actually taken care of the issues that the tyres faced,” Chatterjee says.
“We prepared it carefully and we took care of all the shortfalls that existing competitor tyres had in this segment, so this is the latest tyre with all the latest technologies implemented in it.” The Agri Nova is now available through Alliance’s national dealer network, with the 430 expected to be available later this year.

Dieci’s Agri Max 72.10 GD has a 7,200kg lift capacity to help Australian farmers
Big addition Sometimes bigger is better when it comes to farm machinery, but Dieci Australia knows that size alone does not make a complete package. This is why so much design work has gone into its latest telehandler model, the Agri Max 72.10 GD, and why Dieci Australia is excited by what it can bring to farmers who work in some of the nation’s most demanding environments. Agri Max 72.10 GD boasts a 7,200kg maximum lift capacity and 9.5m lift height, impressive specifications which are complemented by a 125hp (93kW) engine and a 40km/h maximum speed. Dieci Australia national sales manager Bob Mules says the Agri Max 72.10 GD will be an “exciting addition” to the manufacturer’s range once it arrives in the country from November. “The Agri Max 72.10 GD gives larger farming operations the capacity to move serious loads without compromising the precision and versatility you need around the farm,” he says. “It brings serious lifting capacity together with the control, manoeuvrability and operator comfort Australian agricultural

customers expect from a modern high-capacity telehandler.” Building on success Dieci telehandlers already have an established presence in the local market thanks to a range of impressive features which are also included on the Agri Max 72.10 GD. One of these is the single compensation cylinder patented by Dieci. This is located inside the lifting ram ensuring the load on the boom is balanced at all times, thereby improving durability. Its advanced telescopic boom is manufactured from high-strength steel, while there is also a side shift carriage for precise load positioning and accurate stacking of materials such as bales. Accuracy is one area where Mules says the Agri Max 72.10 GD excels, highlighting the importance of precision to agricultural operations. “It’s not just about how much a telehandler can lift, it’s how precisely the operator can control that load,” he says. “The 145-litre-per-minute hydraulic system, proportional joystick and
integrated forward-neutral-reverse controls give the Agri Max excellent responsiveness for repetitive loading and handling applications.” The four-in-one joystick enables the boom to be operated in one place for smoothness and functionality, while the integrated direction controls allow for quick and intuitive changes when required. Agri Max 72.10 GD also features a two-speed servo-controlled gearbox and continuously variable transmission to deliver efficient travel speeds with exceptional low-speed torque. An inching pedal allows travel speed to be reduced or stopped while full hydraulic power to the boom is maintained, something which provides greater precision during delicate work. Comfort focus Australian farmers spend long days inside the cabins of their machinery while working in harsh conditions, making it paramount that a comfortable working environment is available.

Dieci Australia’s large-scale telehandler offering is about to grow with a new model, the Agri Max 72.10 GD, set to arrive in November
The Agri Max 72.10 GD will arrive in Australia in November
This is where Mules believes the Agri Max 72.10 GD excels, highlighting this as a major step up from existing telehandlers. “One of the biggest developments with the Agri Max 72.10 is the new Giugiaro Design cab,” he says. “It’s spacious, comfortable and exceptionally well laid out, with excellent visibility and intuitive controls, all things that make a real difference when an operator is spending long days in the machine.” Developed with renowned Italian design house Giugiaro, the cabin features a spacious interior and air suspension seat, along with an adjustable steering column, ergonomically positioned controls and large, curved windows that provide a 360-degree view of the working area. Another feature of the Agri Max 72.10 GD is a reversible fan which automatically clears dust and debris from the radiator to maintain optimum cooling performance. This fan is particularly valuable when working in hot and dusty environments such as Australian farms is another reason why Mules believes the latest model is suited to the needs of local customers. “Australian agriculture can be incredibly demanding on machinery,” he says. “Customers need equipment that can work long hours, handle heavy loads and perform reliably in tough conditions, and that’s exactly where we see the Agri Max 72.10 GD fitting into the market.”
Ready to perform Telehandlers are serving a variety of purposes on Australian farms thanks to their ability to move heavy materials quickly and safely with considerable height and reach. Dieci Australia’s existing telehandler range includes specialised models for the cotton, poultry and piggery industries along with a number of general-purpose units to suit farmers regardless of their size needs. With the Agri Max 72.10 GD fitting at the top end in terms of power and capacity, Mules expects it to be popular with Australian farmers across multiple sectors and is excited by what it will bring to the market. “From hay and grain through to fertiliser,
pallets and general material handling, this is a machine designed to earn its place on the farm every day,” he says. “The combination of lifting capacity, attachment versatility and manoeuvrability makes it a very capable all-round agricultural machine. “We’re really looking forward to introducing the Agri Max 72.10 GD to Australian customers in November. “It represents the next step in Dieci’s high-capacity agricultural offering and brings together the performance farmers need with a significant step forward in operator comfort and machine design.” Dieci Australia’s full product range can be viewed online at www.dieciaustralia.com.au

Buying a Bobcat UTV and tractor in quick succession has reaped a multitude of benefits both on and off farm for their new owners
Taking farm machinery on holiday is generally not among its primary purposes, but a Western Australian family has been able to combine work and play with their latest purchase. Kate and Adam D’A rcy bought a Bobcat UV33 premium utility vehicle along with a CT4055 compact tractor from the same brand, with the machines combining to enhance both their professional and personal lives. Based in Geraldton in WA’s coastal mid-north, the D’A rcys have found the

UV33 fits perfectly in the back of their Basestation caravan. This means it can come on their holidays along with weekend beach or bush trips, showcasing the ability of UTVs to contribute to more than just farm work. “We would normally take a couple of quad bikes and a two-wheeler motorbike away with us so the whole family can be out there having fun,” Kate says. “Now we have the option of being able to load the UTV into the back of our caravan and only have to take one motorbike – plus the dogs get a safe travel area now if we take the UTV. “For beach or bush trips there is more storage space for eskies, barbecues, chairs, fishing and beach gear, and swimming gear without compromising on seating space.” Best of both Bobcat’s UV33 has an 83hp (62kW) engine and can reach a maximum of 100km/h. Weighing 893kg, it also has an impressive 454kg cargo box bed load capacity, which means users such as the D’A rcy family have plenty of

storage space while on their adventures. There is a spacious cabin, sliding driver’s seat and clear digital display, along with 14inch (35cm) alloy wheels, LED headlights, three headrests and a netted door. The petrol-powered UV33 is available in two configurations, with the D’A rcys having the premium model with increased features. All of the above features are included on both the standard and premium configurations, with the premium model adding front and rear windshields, side and rear mirrors, wipers and washers,
turn and hazard signals, a two-inch rear hitch ball, e-brake and horn, plus a winch. Bobcat highlights the UV33’s blending of “rugged capability with refined design” while adding it is “bridging the gap between industrial equipment and a lifestyle vehicle”. While the lifestyle benefits have been a bonus, the D’A rcys primarily bought the UV33 as a vehicle to work on their property. Their property is acreage located just outside of Geraldton, a regional city about 420km north of Perth.

“They both have their place but the UTV is definitely taking over – we tend to reach for the UTV keys a lot faster than the Hilux these days.”

The UV33 was purchased to help with multiple areas including carrying feed to animals, towing a small trailer while doing block cleanups, gathering firewood and general jobs around the property. Before purchasing the Bobcat UTV, they were relying on their Hilux ute to complete these jobs, but Kate says the Bobcat has progressively taken over for a number of reasons. “We still run around in the Hilux as it is fully enclosed, which is handy in the
weather such as rain and cold, and also when spraying, but the UTV is better for the other jobs,” she says. “It’s safe for the kids to use on the property, much smaller to fit into those tighter spaces and has a lot more speed and agility when we are rounding up sheep and similar jobs. “The tray on the UTV holds small square hay bales perfectly and it can access a lot more terrain than both the Hilux and tractor can.
Clever and compact The UV33 was the second Bobcat purchase in quick succession for the D’A rcy family, who had initially acquired a Bobcat CT4055 compact tractor from their local dealer Collective Diesel Services. The CT4055 has a four-cylinder engine producing 55hp (41kW) and a three-range hydrostatic transmission. This transmission uses hydraulic pressure to change speed, similar to a vehicle, meaning drivers will only need to stop moving if they want to change range. Bobcat says this is the ideal transmission choice for frequent front-end loader work, mowing and clearing, while its ease of operation makes it well suited to inexperienced drivers. The tractor also comes standard with rear PTO and four-wheel drive, along with a Category 1 three-point hitch. It is designed for properties such as the acreage that the D’A rcys have, with Bobcat The Bobcat tractor and UTV have both been winners for the D’Arcy family. Image: Kate and Adam D’Arcy

saying it has the horsepower to run heavy-duty attachments and implements and allow users to “mow large properties, grade driveways, haul heavy materials or do serious digging”. For operators, standard features include a fully-adjustable premium seat, cruise control, side mirrors, cup holders and tail, brake and headlights, along with power and tilt steering. It also includes rear differential locks as standard, along with fold-down ROPS and a 62.4L/min total hydraulic pump capacity. There is a maximum speed of 29.7km/h forward and 20.8km/h in reverse, along with a 48L fuel tank. For the D’A rcys, the Bobcat’s strengths have made their regular work easier thanks to its lifting and transporting capabilities. “The tractor was a much-needed asset for the property along with our other business,” Kate says. “Just being able to move hay without manual labour has been a game changer and that is just the tip of the iceberg. “Every hard labour job around the place
seems so much easier and practical now we have a machine to take over the heavy lifting and manual work. “The tractor just makes things so much easier and quicker.” Stellar support Bobcat of Australia is a business division of Clark Equipment, with the brand supported by Clark’s network of dealers around the country. One of these – Collective Diesel Services in Geraldton – is where the D’A rcys sourced their Bobcat machinery from, and it was the local support through the dealership that first enticed them to invest in the brand. “We have always found Bobcat to be a reputable brand and when a dealer became available in Geraldton that was the tipping point for us and we went for it,” Kate says. “Having someone local to assist with queries or support if we required was far more convenient than having to travel to Perth or make a phone call each time.” Kate is also full of praise for the service they received from the
dealership, describing Collective Diesel Services as being “wonderful”. “From the beginning of answering all of our questions, giving us plenty of options without the ‘salesman pressure’, speedy processing of paperwork, contacts of other industries required, we were kept in the loop the whole process,” she says. “With the delivery and handover, plus ongoing support with now owning the two vehicles, the service through has been second to none.” It is not only the D’A rcys who are impressed with their new machinery, with Kate saying any friends who visit their property have also given only positive feedback about both the UTV and tractor. “We are very happy with our purchases and each time someone comes to our place they cannot believe the tractor and UTV are a Bobcat brand,” she says. “They are surprised each time and impressed with the product.” Bobcat’s full product range can be viewed online at www.bobcatofaustralia.com.au

FARMING
Labour of love A 1969 Dodge Valiant ute might not be what visitors expected to see at Achmea Farm Insurance’s AgQuip stand – but its presence had a real purpose It can be hard to stand out at a field day amid rows of large machinery such as combine harvesters and high-horsepower tractors. Among the machinery, displays and demonstrations at AgQuip, Achmea Farm Insurance, found a different way to catch the eye: a 1969 Dodge Utility. The person responsible for this was Dubbo-based Achmea Farm Insurance Specialist and vintage car enthusiast Laurence Rogers. It’s not the first time Achmea Farm Insurance has taken this approach at the popular New South Wales field day, with Laurence having brought different cars to the event over the last four years. “In recent years, we’ve been trying to bring a different vehicle to AgQuip because it helps spark conversations with visitors,” Laurence says. “The ute catches people’s attention. Everyone has a story about a vehicle they’ve owned, restored or worked with over the years, and that creates an immediate connection.”
26
Farms & Farm Machinery
“It gets the conversation started. I can share the story behind the ute, and, from there talk about their farms and what matters most.” Global connections The story of Laurence’s ute is one which combines networking, passion and problem solving. “I’ve basically been into Valiants since I was in high school, partly because Holdens and Fords were already getting too expensive for anything desirable,” he says. “In 2020, I found an old ute in a paddock about an hour away from Dubbo, so I bought that and fixed all the mechanicals on it but left the rest of it as it was.” As a car enthusiast, he also regularly read articles by an American car journalist and was inspired by hearing the story of how the journalist would get an old Jeep every year, fix it up and drive it to the Easter Jeep Safari in the American state of Utah, a distance roughly equivalent to Gold Coast to Adelaide.
Laurence reached out via social media and discovered David had an old 1965 Valiant as a “cheap runabout for a couple of winters” in an environment where better cars are kept protected during the coldest months, eventually sending him an Australian Valiant bumper sticker. It was a throwaway line from the American journalist during one of their conversations which triggered a chain of events that led to the AgQuip display. “He saw my utes and said, ‘wow, if you find another one of those, I’d love to fix it up’,” Laurence says. “Being in farm insurance, I’m out and about everywhere and I found one out at Tottenham, which is about two hours from Dubbo in the middle of the state.” After making the offer, Laurence followed up. “I said, ‘are you going to take me up on this offer?’ and he did,” Laurence says. In late 2022, the American journalist travelled to Australia and, over the course of three weeks, with a team of mates, they built the ute from a bare shell.
Achmea Farm Insurance’s Laurence Rogers showed his ute ‘Cactus’ at AgQuip. Image: Prime Creative Media
Australian slang – particularly the phrase “that part’s a bit cactus” – leading Laurence to nickname the ute ‘Cactus’.
“This is all used and leftover parts that people had in their sheds and a lot of it is parts that aren’t as desirable,” Laurence says. Using a three-speed manual rather than four-speed meant the gearbox only cost around $100, while opting for a smaller four-litre engine involved an outlay of about $200. The radiator came from a limousine that was being scrapped, and for $50 Laurence now had something with better cooling capacity than the original part. “The whole idea of it was to obviously meet that challenge over that short deadline but also show people that you can have a classic car without it costing an absolute fortune,” he says. It has been a passion project, with Laurence treating the ute like a “blank canvas” and continuing to make upgrades when he finds ideal parts. The ute is not just a novelty though. It is Laurence’s everyday car, used for everything from shopping through to interstate adventures. Shortly after completing the build, Laurence took it on a 1,600km round trip to Deniliquin to show its capabilities and he has travelled an estimated 16,000km in it since. While spending time on the rebuild, the American journalist became familiar with
More than a display The story of the ute’s rebuild, particularly how parts were sourced from a variety of places, has also provided a natural conversation starter with farmers visiting the Achmea Farm Insurance stand. For Laurence, it reflects the value of understanding how different pieces come together, whether restoring a classic vehicle or talking with farmers about the broad range of assets and activities involved in running a farm. “A topic that often comes up when people see the ute is the number of moving parts involved in both farming and restoring a vehicle,” he says. “Every farm is different and many farmers have accumulated machinery, vehicles and infrastructure over time. “Those conversations often lead to broader questions about the assets and activities farmers are looking to protect, and the importance of understanding the insurance cover they hold and need. “We enjoy having those conversations and sharing information about the options available, so that farmers can consider what may be relevant to their own circumstances.”
With thousands of farmers attending AgQuip across the three days and with the sun shining this year, the event provides a great opportunity for these conversations to take place. “AgQuip is a real celebration of agriculture itself and there’s always new things going on,” Laurence says. “People are getting very technical with their farming and likewise we’re the same. “We only do farm insurance. That’s what we focus on and our purpose is to keep farmers farming.” For more information about Achmea Farm Insurance, visit www.achmea.com.au Insurance issued by Achmea Schadeverzekeringen N.V. The ParaLink Dual Xtreme opener is designed to work with Bourgault’s existing 3335 ParaLink Hoe Drill
Extreme benefits Getting new equipment and getting it early is a winning combination for any farmer looking to boost their operations for a new season. Bourgault Australia is giving growers the opportunity to do both of these things with its recently-launched ParaLink Dual Xtreme (PLDX) opener forming one attractive proposition during its Early Order Program (EOP). At its essence, the EOP allows farmers to access pricing incentives, factory production scheduling and the best chance to lock in their preferred equipment ahead of the 2027 season. It also means farmers can specify the configuration, technology and equipment best suited to their operation, ensuring the machine they purchase has been tailored to their requirements ahead of time. This enables farmers to hit the ground running when it comes time for seeding, confident in the knowledge their machinery is right for their individual needs. Such a concept applies to machines

across Bourgault’s range including the 3335 ParaLink Hoe Drill, which the manufacturer’s new PLDX has been engineered to integrate with. Next generation Bourgault describes the PLDX as being the latest evolution of the company’s ParaLink opener platform, with the design “engineered to improve seed placement consistency, durability and residue handling in demanding Australian seeding conditions”. Developed as part of the ParaLink Xtreme family, the PLDX has been designed for producers seeking greater seeding accuracy across increasingly varied terrain and high-residue environments. A defining feature of the PLDX is its 1:1 contour ratio. Unlike traditional opener designs, the opener follows the movement of the packer wheel on a one-to-one basis, allowing it to maintain more consistent seeding depth over undulating ground.
This closer relationship between the opener and packer wheel helps improve row-to-row seed placement consistency, particularly in uneven paddocks where maintaining uniform depth is critical to crop establishment. The PLDX also incorporates a dual knife configuration, providing separate seed and fertiliser placement while maintaining accurate positioning of both products. The opener geometry has been refined to improve soil flow through the assembly, reducing residue build-up and allowing the machine to perform effectively in heavy stubble conditions. With an eye towards improving long-term reliability, Bourgault has strengthened the opener with a reinforced arm and shank structure, along with redesigned wear components intended to maintain opener geometry throughout extended use. Strengthened structural components are complemented by updates to key pivot points such as introducing larger

one-inch pins in the lower parallel arm. These updates are designed to reduce maintenance requirements while helping preserve consistent seeding performance over the life of the machine. PLDX is also compatible with Bourgault’s Intelligent Control platform, which provides integrated control of the air cart and drill through a single interface, simplifying machine operation while supporting precision seeding functions through compatible OEM tractor displays. Launched in Australia earlier this year, Bourgault says the PLDX will help local growers with seeding precision and system efficiency at a time when larger machinery and tighter seasonal windows are placing greater demands on seeding equipment. This increases the importance of consistency while seeding, as growers look to maximise their efficiency. “The objective with PLDX was to refine how consistently we can place seed across the entire toolbar,” Bourgault Australia general manager Craig Christensen says. “As working widths increase,
Larger one-inch pins in the lower parallel arm provide a high degree of strength
maintaining uniformity from one row to the next becomes more challenging. “The PLDX platform is designed to address that, while also improving durability and ease of adjustment. “When you combine consistent opener performance with the ability to
quickly and accurately adjust depth, it gives growers more confidence in how they’re placing seed.” For more information about Bourgault’s product range and Early Order Program, visit www.bourgault.au/eop

The Digger King excavator has helped the Scott with maintenance works around their farm
Convenience and comfort For David and Pauline Scott, the capability of Digger King’s 2.5c Mini Excavator provided convenience, speed and protection from the northern heat that other models couldn’t Like any other farmers, Queenslanders David and Pauline Scott know there is always a long list of jobs to get done – and growing every day – in managing the property. Whether it be installing pipes underground or repairing fence posts, they need to get done and convenience makes all the difference. The Scotts already have their earthmoving needs sorted with an excavator, but their 22-tonne crawler is just a bit too big for some of the smaller tasks required. Recently, they sought out Digger King and acquired the 2.5c Ton Mini Excavator complete with a package providing a range of implements.
30
Farms & Farm Machinery
Their property in the Toowoomba area has needed some groundwork and so far, the smaller one has been great for getting tasks done quick and easy. “This one is just sort of getting in the small places where the other big one can’t get,” David says. “It’s just the size and manoeuvrability, and it is just big enough to do some work rather than not too small.” The Digger King 2.5c delivers heavy-duty performance packed into a versatile, user-friendly footprint. Whether you are tackling tight residential earthworks, managing property maintenance, or running a commercial contracting business, this machine is built to streamline workflow.
Measuring just 1,025mm wide, the machine easily navigates restricted access areas like side gates and narrow alleyways with a swing boom that makes manoeuvring in tight places easy. The 2.5c has retractable tracks that can shrink from 1,275mm to 1,025mm. The main work David has been using the 2.5c for recently has been trenching to lay underground cables throughout the farm and boring for new fence posts. With the ability to dig to a depth of 2,150mm, it has made the process a much lighter task. The efficiency extends beyond the small stature, with a hydraulic quick hitch system allowing him to easily swap between the range of attachments
provided in the packages from the four buckets between 200mm and 1,000mm, to the ripper and claw. For David, the package adds that “little bit of versatility.” The 2.5c is a small beast that won’t rip up a paddock, but it still has a mighty heart. Offering a smooth, reliable threecylinder Kubota diesel engine, the 2.5c provides the ideal balance of fuel efficiency and raw digging power. “It’s on rubber tracks as well,” he says. “So, you can run around the yard and not chop it all up too much.” Furthermore, the inclusion of an enclosed cab with reverse-cycle air conditioning ensures year-round operator comfort, protecting operators from extreme heat, dust, and winter chills. For David, that extra bit of protection from the summer sun or dry dust makes working in the machine all the more comfortable. “This makes it a better environment to work in, with air conditioning,” he says. Digger King provides an exceptional value bundle designed to get you straight to work.

needed and having it ready to go as soon as possible. “They put a lot of effort into showing us what it could do,” he says. “There was a magazine with their product catalogue and this seemed to be a bit of a standout. “They had it all ready to go and it was an excellent service.” David says he appreciates the finer details of craftmanship, and a close inspection of a product can tell him whether something is made with care and precision. On the 2.5c, he can tell Digger King manufactures their products with a pride in their work.
“I was surprised what the quality of workmanship on it was like,” he says. “The welds are all great welds. Where it’s been welded together, it seems strong. “I’ve actually used some of the smaller machines before that can’t really handle the workload that they go through.” Digger King’s package offers commercial-grade durability, backed by solid warranty support, with the machine being a smart, scalable asset designed to elevate a farmer’s productivity from day one. Vital prep Viva Energy Australia, the authorised Shell Lubricants Macro Distributor of Australia, urges farmers to ask whether their equipment is ready for harvest Preventative maintenance can reduce downtime, protect equipment and improve productivity across the season. For Australian farmers, machinery reliability is critical and harvest preparation can be one of the most stressful times of the year. It’s when everything is on the line to get the crop out of the field in a timely and efficient manner. From daily farm operations, tractors, seeders, harvesters and other agricultural equipment need to perform when conditions are demanding, and time is limited. Most producers are pushing their equipment harder than ever before, which means you need to perform a close inspection to help identify those areas that need special attention. Focus on last season. Was it a wet harvest? That could mean more mud and dirt entered the system, increasing wear and corrosion. Was it a dry harvest? Perhaps more dust entered the system and clogged vital filters. Maintenance is critical as equipment can stop unexpectedly, and the impact is immediate when productivity slows, repairs become urgent and costs accumulate.

That is why routine maintenance can play an important role in keeping farm machinery operating efficiently. Crucial lubrication Lubrication remains one of the most important and overlooked areas of equipment and machinery maintenance. It isn’t simply a maintenance task but a performance strategy. Using the correct, high-quality lubricants that meet OEM requirements can help reduce wear, contribute to longer oil life, extended drain intervals and reduce costly downtime. As the authorised Shell Lubricants Macro Distributor of Australia, Viva Energy Australia brings quality Shell Lubricant and local expertise to help farmers reduce equipment and machinery downtime and maintenance cost. Transmission and hydraulic systems are among the most important parts of agricultural equipment and machinery, as they help transfer power, control movement and support smooth operation across a wide range of farm tasks. Shell Spirax S4 TXM is a premium
Shell Spirax S4 TXM is a transmission oil designed for the agricultural industry
Universal Tractor Transmission Oil, also known as a UTTO. It is designed for agricultural tractors and off-road equipment used across the agricultural industry. Covering transmissions, hydraulic systems, oil-immersed brakes, and other systems, this lubricant ensures that key components continue to operate efficiently. “Shell Spirax S4 TXM employs the latest additive technology to promote antioxidation, anti-wear, and anti-corrosion, ensuring smooth system operation and minimising brake noise,” Viva Energy

Australia Technical Specialist Silvana Farrugia says. Excellent low-temperature fluidity paired with friction-modifying additives means Shell Spirax S4 TXM delivers responsive hydraulic performance and smooth gear-shift operation from cold starts through to maximum operating temperatures. This further adds to the operator’s comfort by creating the smooth, noise-free operation of oil-immersed brakes. “The product is also recommended for most wet-brake systems fitted to agricultural equipment and machinery, and it has been tested and approved by a wide range of equipment manufacturers,” Farrugia says. Where to begin A visual inspection of the complete machine is a good starting point, but effective pre-season maintenance goes much further. Before harvest begins, operators should run machinery and thoroughly test critical systems, including steering, brakes, controls and throttle response. Unusual noises, vibrations or

performance issues should be investigated immediately, as seemingly minor problems can quickly develop into major failures under heavy workloads. Headers, chains, sprockets, knives and other moving components should be inspected for wear and damage, while replacing worn parts before harvest can help avoid unplanned repairs when machinery is needed most. Previous harvest experiences can provide valuable insights for preparing equipment. Wet seasonal conditions may have introduced additional mud, moisture and contaminants into machinery systems, increasing the risk of corrosion and wear, while dry conditions often create dust-heavy environments that place additional strain on filters and moving components. Understanding how equipment performed last season can help identify areas requiring extra attention. Any recurring issues that caused downtime in previous years should be resolved before harvest starts. Consider stocking commonly replaced parts to help reduce delays if repairs become necessary during the season.
Whole-of-fleet approach Shell Lubricants are designed to meet the full demands of machinery and equipment fleets. Beyond Shell Spirax transmission oils, the suite encompasses Shell Rimula engine oils, Shell Gadus greases, Shell Tellus hydraulic oils and AeroShell for aircraft giving farmers a broader approach to equipment protection and reliability. “Shell Lubricants meet specifications, approvals and recommendations from many industry-leading original equipment manufacturers, including John Deere, Caterpillar, Deutz Fahr, Komatsu, Volvo and ZF,” Farrugia says. “These approvals help provide farmers with confidence that the products they select are suitable for their machinery and can support efficient operation across the season.” Selecting the right lubricant can be challenging, particularly when farms operate mixed fleets with different makes, models and maintenance requirements. Expert advice can help farmers choose products that meet the correct specifications and suit the way their machinery is used. Businesses can contact the Viva Energy Technical Help Desk for support in selecting the most suitable Shell lubricant for their machinery and equipment. Digital tools such as Shell LubeMatch and Shell LubeAnalyst can also support farmers looking to optimise lubricant selection and monitor equipment health over time. These tools help customers identify tailored lubricant recommendations and survey engine health to support long-term reliability. “We’re cutting silage off them, and not a lot of people nowadays actually let their pasture go right through to mature and to seed. “We’re always taking off and we’re not putting on, so I use mine for oversowing which means we’re putting back what you’re not allowing to happen naturally. “It’s a much cheaper way than using
a disc drill and you’re moving at about double the speed.” Handy tool Manufactured in Austria, Einbock’s Grass Manager works by aerating and dethatching the grass. It crushes plant residue and manure and also mixes the material, while also

When a piece of machinery is used on a dealership staff member’s own farm, it is clear there is significant benefit available with it. For Vin Rowe Farm Machinery’s Einbock product specialist Justin Colby, the Grass Manager weeder has been a winner for pasture management on his own property and neighbours who have borrowed his machine have been similarly impressed. Vin Rowe is a nationwide distributor of several European machinery brands including Einbock and therefore deals with machinery that suits differing environments and multiple farming types. The dealership itself is based at Warragul in Victoria’s Gippsland region, an area which is primarily associated with dairy farming. While Einbock’s Grass Manager weeder suits multiple applications, including having some popularity with sheep farmers in central New South Wales, Colby says plenty of dairy farmers have used the machine to aid their pasture management. “Where we are based is predominantly dairy country and everyone is pretty heavy on their pastures all year round,” he says.
removing weeds and dead grass to ensure healthy paddocks. It is available in a range of configurations with both non-folding and folding setups, giving operators working widths between 1.5m and 12m and therefore between 60 and 480 tines. The smallest model can be pulled by a tractor with only 20hp, meaning there is no impediment for those with less powerful tractors to access the Grass Manager’s benefits. Its tines are adjustable and also built with durability and long life in mind, while there is a stable and durable frame with support wheels. Line spacing of exactly 2.5cm helps to ensure effective and consistent operation. Colby says the Grass Manager can be described as a tine harrow that provides a cheaper, quicker and easier alternative to other machinery types that do pasture management. “If you’re discing or power harrowing ground it’s a long turnaround, whereas with this you can just scoot over pasture at any time,” he says. “You’re using it really to help break up the

crust, knock over any humps and rough up the ground a bit. “It does rip out small weeds and moss, scratches the surface, helps harrow out all your cow manure, dethatches and removes dead stubble at the same time.” Options aplenty Another of the reasons why Einbock’s Grass Manager stands out is for its versatility.
It can also have a seeding box added to the machine – something which Colby has done with his – and this means it can be used as a seeder at the same time. Einbock refers to this setup as the Pneumaticstar, but the ability for it to be used in both configurations speaks to the options available for Australian farmers. For farmers looking at adding a seeding box to their Grass Manager, there is the

choice of both a basic mechanically driven unit or a more advanced electrically driven alternative. “The MD box is pure mechanical drive where you set the rates mechanically, drive it along in a drive wheel on the ground which rotates it and that’s what puts out your product,” Colby says. “Einbock also do a full electric seeding box which you can plug into your tractor as a full ISOBUS controlled system. “That also can be combined with a camera system that goes on the front of the tractor and the idea is that as you drive along, the AI in the camera picks up the areas and works out which ones are a bit bare. “It will automatically increase your rates and then as you go over areas that are a lot healthier or have good ground cover, it will back the rates off.” Providing this versatility also speaks to Einbock’s broader push to a ‘fusion farming’ concept, Colby says, where its machinery appeals to farmers looking at

organic practices but also those farming more conventionally. “We use them for weeding and seeding, but you can also run fertiliser through them,” he says. “That’s where Einbock has come up with this idea of fusion farming – you sell it to the organic farmer who uses it to oversow crops, but you can sell it to the conventional farmer who can also use it to meter out and spread fertiliser. “It has a good metered system which makes sure that it’s got good ground contact because the tines are knocking it down to the ground and getting the fertiliser where it needs to go.” Proven partner Einbock’s Grass Manager speaks to the evolution of farming equipment and its ability to solve changing problems. The product evolved from the Aerostar after the manufacturer noticed many European farmers were putting seed boxes on those units, with upgrades such as levelling bars being added to reflect its changing use. It was also originally designed for
weeding in cereal crops, a fact which gives an insight into its overall functionality across the agricultural landscape. It is also backed up by proven European manufacturing and a brand which Vin Rowe Farm Machinery has built a strong, long-term relationship with during more than 25 years. Colby praises the longevity of Einbock, which was founded in 1934, and the company’s desire to meet the needs of Australian farmers. “Einbock have been doing it for a long time – they’re still a family-owned business and they’re fourth generation now,” he says. “They really try and work with their customers to find those solutions and that’s something they’re very proud of doing. “We’ve had a pretty long relationship with them and it’s been a good relationship.” Einbock machinery is distributed by Vin Rowe Farm Machinery and the range can be viewed at www.vinrowe.com.au

TTMI operates branches across both Victoria and Tasmania. Images: TTMI
Wise words With almost 55 years of history, dealership group TTMI has seen plenty of farming seasons and knows how growers should be preparing There is often no substitute for experience, with old hands knowing what works best and how to avoid common pitfalls. Dealership group TTMI has enjoyed a successful history since its founding in 1972 – including multiple name changes – and a swag of awards won along the way help to provide an insight into how it continues to serve its customer base. While supplying Case IH machinery to farmers in Victoria’s Gippsland region and south-west, along with Tasmania, is what TTMI is best known for, having spent more than half a century in business means the company has a wealth of knowledge about both what matters and what works. Beat the rush With harvest season fast approaching, TTMI says now is the time to make sure machinery is ready to perform when the pressure is on. A little bit of preparation before the
42
Farms & Farm Machinery
season can prevent hours, or even days, of costly downtime later. TTMI says farmers should make the most of any poor weather days by giving tractors, balers, mowers and implements a thorough inspection and paying particular attention to problems that may have been overlooked when the machinery was parked after its last use. After sitting idle through winter, machinery can become an inviting home for rodents. Rats and mice are notorious for chewing through electrical wiring, hoses and insulation, so check carefully for damage and remove any nesting material before starting the machine. Inspect all protective guards and covers, particularly around PTOs, mowers and other powered equipment, and make sure everything is securely in place. Belts, bearings, chains and gears should be checked, lubricated and serviced as required, along with checking belt and chain tension and replacing worn knives, discs or turtles on mowers before heading into the paddock.
Conditioning rollers are another area that can easily be overlooked. Check for uneven wear and take the time to correctly set the roll gap, timing and pressure to suit the crop and conditions. Safety first Preparation is not only about ensuring productivity, TTMI says, with numerous safety benefits to be experienced thanks to proper care. Farmers should make sure every machine has a functioning fire extinguisher and that a well-stocked first aid kit is close by. Cleaning and testing all lights, indicators and reflectors will ensure machinery is visible during road travel and while working after dark. With long days and late finishes common throughout harvest, these simple checks can make a significant difference. Harvest can bring long days that quickly turn into even longer nights.
The dealership group regularly attends field days such as Sheepvention in Hamilton. Image: TTMI
Fatigue is real, and it affects judgement, concentration and reaction times. Resting when you can, taking regular breaks and checking in on the people working around you can also make a significant difference. Harvest safety is not only about maintaining machinery, TTMI says, it is also about looking after yourself and your mates. Before and after It is also worth stocking up on the essential replacement parts and consumables that are likely to be needed during the season, as items such as net wrap, silage film, shear pins and spare tines for tedders, rakes and balers are much easier to organise before the rush begins. Working closely with local full service dealerships parts team like TTMI can help farmers prepare their own stock of common parts and consumables needed to keep machinery working and minimise interruptions throughout the season. Even for operators who prefer to carry out their own maintenance, TTMI offers comprehensive baler inspections, along with workshop and field-service support, while after-hours assistance is also available throughout the busy harvest period. Once harvest winds down, it is important to give machinery one final inspection before putting it away.
Replacing filters and worn seals, releasing belt tensioners where recommended, cleaning away crop residue and storing equipment undercover can help to prevent rust and deterioration. It can be tempting to back everything into the shed and call the job done, but a small amount of post-season maintenance can save considerable time and expense when the machinery is needed again. Finally, as tractors and implements become a more common sight on our
roads, TTMI encourages everyone to share the road patiently. When travelling behind slow-moving machinery, wait for a safe opportunity to pass — and take a moment to enjoy the countryside along the way. TTMI wishes everyone a safe, productive and successful harvest season. TTMI operates seven dealerships across Tasmania, south-western Victoria and the Gippsland region. FARMING
World Class Finance can help Australian farmers with all their machinery needs. Image: powerstock/stock.adobe.com
Keep on moving How the right finance can help farmers and farming contractors acquire the machinery they need, manage cash flow and create room for future growth Whether you are buying your first tractor, upgrading a machine or adding to an established fleet, having the right advice can make a significant difference to the decision you make and, importantly, how that decision affects your business. For a smaller farming operation, a new tractor might be a significant investment. A broadacre grower may be upgrading a tractor or harvester, while a contractor might regularly replace machinery. Or perhaps you have been hiring equipment for an extended period and are starting to question whether owning it would make better financial sense. For a farming business, purchasing a new machine is more than simply buying another piece of equipment. It is an investment that can affect your cash flow, profitability and what your business can do next. That is why choosing the right finance structure can be just as important as choosing the right machine. Finance that fits your business World Class Finance specialises in commercial and business finance, helping farming businesses and agricultural contractors of all sizes access funding for machinery, equipment and their broader business needs.
44
Farms & Farm Machinery
With access to a wide range of banks and lenders, World Class Finance can look at the options available and help find a finance structure that suits the asset, your business and what you are trying to achieve. For a farming business, machinery is what keeps the business moving. Whether it’s a tractor, sprayer, spreader or other piece of equipment, that machinery needs to be out working when you need it. You may have already found the machine you want and simply need to get the finance in place. Or you might want to preserve cash in the business rather than put a large deposit into a new machine. World Class Finance takes the time to understand what you are trying to achieve, explain the options available and help find a finance structure that works for your business as well as the machine you are buying. For farming businesses, that can also mean considering seasonal cash flow and when income is likely to come into the business. Financing around the season A grain producer was looking to upgrade a tractor ahead of the upcoming season. The existing machine was due for replacement, but purchasing the new tractor outright would have meant
using cash the business also needed for other seasonal costs. The farmer came to World Class Finance to look at the finance options available and how the purchase could be structured around the seasonal nature of the business. World Class Finance arranged finance for the new tractor, with repayments structured to better align with the business’s cash flow. The farmer was able to put the new tractor to work while preserving cash in the business for other costs throughout the season. Keeping the fleet working An agricultural contractor was looking to replace one of its harvesters ahead of the upcoming season. The business already had several machines under finance, so it was important to consider how the new purchase would fit with its existing commitments. World Class Finance looked at the contractor’s existing finance commitments and the role the new harvester would play, then structured the finance to suit the purchase and the business’ cash flow. The contractor was able to have the new harvester ready for the season without unnecessarily tying up cash,

while maintaining flexibility for future equipment needs. A personal approach No two businesses operate in exactly the same way. If you are purchasing your first tractor, your requirements will be very different to those of an agricultural contractor managing a large fleet of machinery across multiple sites. You may need a machine quickly ahead of the season, be replacing existing equipment or have several machines already under finance and need to add another as your business grows. That’s why World Class Finance takes a personal and practical approach. The team looks at what you need, how the equipment will be used and what is important to your business. For some clients, that might simply mean getting the right machine financed quickly. For others, existing finance commitments, cash flow or future equipment requirements may also need to be considered. Where appropriate, World Class Finance can also work alongside your accountant
and other professional advisers to make sure the finance supports the broader needs of your business. Beyond machinery Your finance needs may also extend beyond machinery. World Class Finance assists clients with managing cash flow, refinancing existing facilities, addressing ATO debt, purchasing commercial property and other commercial finance requirements. Whatever your requirements, World Class Finance is committed to providing personal
service, clear communication and practical support throughout the process. World Class Finance believes finance should do more than fund an asset – it should support the business behind it. If you’re buying your first machine, adding to your fleet, considering whether to buy rather than hire, or looking at the next stage of growth for your business, talk to the team at World Class Finance. Big crowds attended all three days of this year’s AgQuip
Plenty to see Agricultural machinery to suit the broadacre market was a major drawcard at this year’s AgQuip Held at a dedicated site near Gunnedah in New South Wales, AgQuip first took place in 1973 and attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year. The promise of seeing the latest and greatest in farm machinery, along with proven performers from both Australian and international manufacturers, has made this an event which consistently draws big crowds. High-horsepower tractors and combine harvesters caught the eye alongside excavators and wheel loaders, while various attachments and new technology showcased the depth of product available in Australian agriculture. Farms & Farm Machinery was on site this year to check out some of the machinery highlights: JCB The British manufacturer’s machinery range, which includes telehandlers and tractors, was represented at AgQuip by dealer Wideland Group. Wideland’s managing director Andrew Kibble says much of the machinery which it showcased at the event has appeal to both the farming and construction industries. “We sell the telehandlers to feed lotters and grain farmers – they’re just so versatile for people feeding on farm to those in the construction industry,” he says. “We also sell a lot of skid steers

because their safety is second to none compared to other skid steers with their side door, which means you’re not jumping over buckets. “The safety aspect of the skid steers has been a big game changer for us.” McCormick With much of the machinery on display at AgQuip being tailored to the broadacre market, it was little surprise that Clark Equipment chose to highlight
one of McCormick’s largest tractors. The X7.616 boasts a six-cylinder Iveco engine that produces a maximum of 166hp (124kW), with a 54 x 27 powershift transmission and maximum travel speed of 50km/h. Recently redesigned to make the tractor heavier and longer, it also offers larger wheel equipment and extended service intervals – all introduced with the demands of broadacre farmers in mind. efficiency and 12 work lights to provide all-round visibility during nighttime work are additional features which point to this tractor’s suitability for long hours in tough conditions. Kerfab Attachments manufacturer Kerfab operates across both farming and construction, with products that suits various machinery types. Much of its AgQuip display was naturally agriculture-focused, particularly the Bale Boss and Bale Grab which are both designed for hay handling. “This is specialised hay handling equipment, particularly for feedlots and high-capacity hay handling situations,” Kerfab business development manager Michael Knight says. “The Bale Boss is designed for feedlots that are used every day of the year, so it is a hard hitting piece of equipment.” Kerfab’s Bale Boss is a heavy-duty clamp which securely grips the wrapped bales without puncturing the wrap and also opens up to 2.75m to accommodate various sizes. The Bale Grab allows for safe picking up, transporting and loading of wrapped bales, with rounded steel clamping arms holding the product securely while also being compatible with telehandlers and wheel loaders. the SY35U mini excavator, which has a 3,105mm maximum digging depth. It boasts a fully enclosed cabin to make it comfortable in all conditions, a zero tail swing design to increase safety, plus high breakout forces to handle
demanding work in some of Australia’s toughest conditions. There are also load-sensing hydraulics to deliver smooth machine response along with a compact overall footprint. CEA took over as SANY’s excavator dealer for New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia this year, while telehandlers are another important part of the manufacturer’s range. Merlo Telehandler manufacturer Merlo had a strong presence at AgQuip thanks to local dealer National Ag Solutions. Among the machines on display was the TF42.7, a medium-capacity telehandler within the Turbofarmer range. Merlo Australia regional manager Terry Dransfield with the TF42.7 telehandler
The next-generation designs offer significant improvements in everything from fuel efficiency to connectivity and applies to the 155, 165 and 185 horsepower models. “It’s got increased manoeuvrability, integrated technology and best in class fuel efficiency,” Case IH product manager Seamus McCarthy says. “This is the first one we’re showcasing at
AgQuip but we’re expecting the first units to arrive in Q1 of 2027. Go and see your local dealer and you’ll have the tractor here before you know it.” The upgrades mean Puma buyers will now have access to all the technology which was previously only available in Case IH’s higher horsepower tractors, such as the latest capabilities of FieldOps and the benefits of Connected Services.

Harvey and Bronson Crick with Rata Equipment’s bale slicer
Roo Attachments business development manager Rob Price
Roo Attachments is an Australianowned company which prioritises quality design and build across all of its products. The company’s directors are also strongly embedded in rural Australia, giving them a clear awareness of what the customer base is looking for.
Manufactured in Italy, the TF42.7 has a 4,000kg maximum lift capacity, 7m maximum lift height and 3.8m maximum reach. Powered by a 105hp (78kW) engine, it is a telehandler which has been proven ideal for materials handling, with National Ag customers often using it for grain and fertiliser handling. Rata Equipment In addition to the Power Claws which again proved a hit with customers, Rata Equipment also showed off its redesigned bale slicer. The new design opens up wider than before, adding extra versatility and efficiency when dealing with large bales. There is a sharp, high-tensile cutting edge which enables effortless slicing through even the densest bales, with two powerful rams pulling the blade through hay, silage or straw with ease. Heavy-duty pins and bushes are used throughout to ensure this unit has the durability which Rata products have become known for. Its simple yet effective design also simultaneously removes the plastic and netting to make operation as easy as possible. AgXeed The AgXeed autonomous tractor at Claas Harvest Centre’s stand attracted enormous interest throughout AgQuip. The unit on display was a fullyautonomous 156hp (116kW) diesel-electric machine, with a larger model soon to arrive in Australia.

The fully autonomous AgXeed tractor was a unique and popular machine at AgQuip
Landpower’s Paul Birbeck says the model on display particularly suits vegetable applications where lots of passes are required, while the first model of the larger 260hp (194kW) unit will be used for broadacre track renovation where it will pull a ripper. AgXeed’s innovation in the autonomous space has also been recognised with wins in the past two years of a new robot category in the global Tractor of the Year awards. Roo Attachments With a strong footprint in both Australian construction and agriculture, it was little surprise to see Roo Attachments in a prominent site at AgQuip. Its range of post rammers again proved popular after selling out at AgQuip last year, while interest in its entire range kept the team busy during the three days. “We’ve got a full range of everything from excavators, skid steers, tractors and more, from post rammers to stick rakes, pallet forks, grabs – everything you need,” business development manager Rob Price says.
New Holland A redesigned tractor range was the headline attraction for New Holland during AgQuip. The manufacturer says T7 Standard Wheelbase, which is available in its T7.190, T7.210 and T7.225 models, “combines the performance, comfort and technology expected of a larger tractor with the compact dimensions and versatility required for everyday farm tasks.” A new front axle and front-end architecture reduce the turning circle by 20 percent, meaning greater manoeuvrability in tight spaces, while the rear linkage lift capacity has also increased by 20 per cent. It also introduces New Holland’s latest transmission technology, including the new three-range Auto Command CVT, which it says delivers up to 10 per cent greater operating efficiency. Other major improvements include New Holland’s T7.225 is the largest of three tractors to receive recent upgrades

AIE Group Australian International Equipment Group has built its reputation for offering high-quality equipment and attachments, both new and low-hour used, to farmers and construction businesses. A 2024 Kubota SVL 75-3 track loader was one example of a machine which AIEG brought to AgQuip, alongside Caterpillar machinery that forms a major part of its offering. “We’ve had a lot of these machines coming through recently, high-spec Kubotas and Cats,” director and general manager Blake Burgess says. John Deere’s imposing X9 1100 combine harvester
“We’ve had really positive feedback from them too.” In addition to machinery, AIEG also did a roaring trade in its branded footballs, which have become an annual tradition and raises about $10,000 each year for the Westpac rescue helicopter service. John Deere Combining power and performance, John Deere’s X9 1100 combine harvester was a standout for dealer Hutcheon & Pearce. This is a combine built for the biggest jobs in Australia, with a 16,210L power folding grain tank, 186.7L/second peak unload rate and its engine providing a maximum power of 690hp (515kW). It is integrated with the latest in John Deere technology including the G5 Command Center Display, while also offering reduced fuel consumption to maximise profitability. During AgQuip, Hutcheon & Pearce also attracted visitors to its stand with several reptile shows being held throughout the event, enabling attendees to have an experience that was about more than just machinery.
CFMOTO’s U10 Pro Highland remains the manufacturer’s flagship UTV
CFMOTO Utility vehicle manufacturer CFMOTO added two models to its U10 Pro range earlier this year, joining the existing U10 Pro Highland. The existing model, which has proven a winner for Australian farmers, is described by CFMOTO as being “a cut above” and features a full cabin with heating and air conditioning. It provides a maximum of 90hp (67kW) along with a 1,134kg towing capacity and 454kg tray load capacity. Hydraulic disc brakes, full doors with electric windows and progressive power steering are all features of the U10 Pro Highland, which remains CFMOTO’s flagship all-weather model.

The Bourgault 8450 air cart
Bourgault The fact Bourgault’s 8450 air cart, which captured the eye at AgQuip for its imposing size, is one of the manufacturer’s smaller models speaks volumes. This unit has a 16,560L capacity across its four tanks, and the fact other models are available with capacities almost three times as high shows that Bourgault products are designed for the biggest jobs. The 8450 has a Class A metering system, which has been proven in Bourgault machinery for decades. Control systems enable multiple products to be handled, while products can be loaded quickly with the load-unload auger. An optional Saddle Tank makes handling bagged product both easy and convenient. Mahindra While the broadacre market is not Mahindra’s primary focus, the fact it is the world’s largest tractor seller by volume means it has mass appeal. One of its largest tractors, the 7590, was on display in Gunnedah for AgQuip.
Mahindra’s 7590 is among its largest tractors

It has a 92hp (69kW) engine, along with a rugged mainframe with durable boom structure mounted rigidly across the chassis. Quick hitch and quick attach design allows for easy use of a variety of implements, with a 2,500kg lift capacity showcasing its capabilities. Heavy-duty synchromesh transmission has 12 forward and 12 reverse gears and there is also a 41.6L/ min hydraulic pump output. Mahindra says this tractor is ideal for primary and secondary tillage, livestock operations, crop protection and other maintenance jobs such as mowing, slashing and haulage. Gason Proudly manufactured in Australia, the 8T widespread section control spreader was a product which Gason was keen to show off. Its Chrome series spreaders are built for broadacre growers, mixed enterprises and contractors by a company which has been operating from Ararat in Victoria since 1946. “Along the way we’ve developed and manufactured using Australian supply chains for a significant period of time,” Gason ag account executive Colin Matthews says. “This is our latest iteration and it’s a step up from our highly regarded but slightly lower-tech ground drive machines. “This is for the person who wants to be able to get out to 36m and is looking for something made of stainless steel, laser welded, ISOBUS controls, load cells, multi-set axles and split chain section control, and who wants to get the absolute most out of what are now very expensive inputs that need to be put on the farm.”
FlipScreen A selection of screening buckets from FlipScreen gave AgQuip visitors an insight into the manufacturer’s depth of product. Available as an attachment for machines such as skid steers, loaders and excavators, these allow material such as dirt, gravel or fertiliser to be screened and separated on the spot. This allows clumps to be broken up, with material then cleaned and able to be used again. As a result, material that was perceived to be unusable can be transformed during a process that saves both money and time. FlipScreen also works as a bucket, allowing it to handle everyday work, with an extensive selection of sizes enabling all operators to find the perfect model regardless of their machinery type or capacity requirements. LiuGong Already backed by an international design award, LiuGong’s T Series wheel loaders have proven popular since entering the Australian market. One of these models – the 856T – soared into the sky at AgQuip as its 3.5 cubic metre capacity bucket was on full display. Complemented by a 220hp (164kW) Cummins L9 engine and 9,300kg rated load capacity, this is a wheel loader with serious capability for both construction buyers and farmers. A comfortable, ergonomic cabin with multi-adjustable armrest and joystick make it an easy machine to operate, with LiuGong wheel loaders proven to be ideal for materials handling in various forms. Lovol It is hard for a 22-tonne excavator to not catch the eye, but size alone was not the only reason why Lovol’s FR220F stood out. Its Cummins engine produces 178hp (133kW) and the 1.1 cubic metre bucket means it can handle big job. A luxury cabin is sealed and air-conditioned, while modern design and features make this a reliable unit for demanding environments. A Doosan hydraulic system with pilot oil operated joysticks for precise control is just one standout, along with hydraulic quick hitch, tilting hitch and anti-drop valves.

Mixed bag Western Australia was the shining light during another slow month for tractor sales in July, the TMA says, while two other machinery types were up
Self-propelled sprayer sales recorded an increase during July. Image: Oleg Kyslyi/stock.adobe.com
July was another difficult month for tractor sales with around 600 machines sold across the country. This was 15 per cent down on the same month last year and means Australia is now down 11 per cent on a year-to-date basis. Whilst July is typically a lower month following an end of financial year bump, it is clear that a return to positive territory remains some months off. Western Australia was the only state not to record a decline, with sales being 9.4 per cent higher than July 2025, while tractor sales in all weight categories were down nationwide. As we are now past the halfway mark of the year, there appears the very real prospect of total sales for the full year being under 9,000 units. If this happens, it would be the lowest reported level in the last 15 years. While WA was the standout, the next best performing state was Victoria which only had a 5.8 per cent drop compared to this month last year. The smaller market of Northern Territory remains the only one up on a year-to-date basis, with a modest rise of
1.5 per cent compared to the first seven months of 2025. Positivity came in the form of both self-propelled sprayer and out-front mower sales. Out-front mowers were up again and are now 5 per cent ahead on a year-todate basis, while self-propelled sprayers reported a strong lift and are up 29.6 per cent compared to July last year. In other machinery categories, Australia saw 20 combine harvesters sold during July which brings the year-to-date figure to a level 50 per cent down on the same time last year. It clearly looks like being a tough year for combines also, while baler sales had a difficult month after recent positivity. Balers were down this month by 30.8 per

cent in July but still remain 11.6 per cent up on a year-to-date basis. The annual TMA conference was held in Sydney on July 29. OPINION
Fair catch WAFarmers CEO Trevor Whittington says both the commercial and recreational fishing sectors need to be considered when discussing the state’s long-term policies
Trevor Whittington is CEO of WAFarmers
Back in December last year I wrote that the Western Australian government’s cuts to commercial and recreational fishing weren’t really about fisheries management. I argued the government had blinked in the face of the “I Fish, I Vote” campaign and delivered one of the biggest reallocations of a public resource in Western Australia’s history.
At the time I argued the real losers wouldn’t simply be a few dozen commercial fishermen. They would be the 3.1 million Western Australians who don’t own an offshore fishing boat, don’t spend weekends towing a trailer to Exmouth or Esperance and whose only practical access to fresh local dhufish and snapper is through their local fish shop, supermarket or favourite fish and chip shop. My prediction that dhufish would become “fish for the rich” didn’t take long to materialise as prices quickly blew past the $100 a kilogram I predicted and headed towards $200. Somehow one of Western Australia’s iconic local foods had become less affordable for ordinary families while supporting the lifestyle of those rich enough to drag their boats north and south to keep fishing. Throughout the debate we’ve been constantly reminded that one in four Western Australians go fishing each year, and it was they who were being unfairly impacted. That figure includes children catching herring off the jetty, families soaking a line off the beach, holidaymakers chasing whiting, people dropping a crab net into an estuary and thousands who wet a line once or twice a year. Offshore demersal fishing is something entirely different. Western Australia has more than 104,000 registered recreational vessels,
but that includes yachts, dinghies, ski boats and personal watercraft. Around 130,000 Recreational Boat Fishing Licences are issued each year, yet those licence holders pursue everything from crabs, crayfish and squid to herring, tailor, salmon, tuna, mackerel and estuary species. Only a relatively small proportion regularly head offshore chasing demersal fish such as dhufish and pink snapper. Common sense tells you that. If 30,000 offshore fishing boats launched on a long weekend, Western Australia’s 112 public boat ramps would resemble the Kwinana Freeway heading south on Christmas Eve, but they don’t. Even during peak holiday periods, most marina berths remain occupied by boats that rarely leave the pens. Thought for everyone Every one of Western Australia’s 3.1 million residents is a seafood consumer. Even the most committed offshore angler still orders fish and chips, buys fresh seafood for Christmas or enjoys local dhufish at their favourite restaurant. Commercial fishermen don’t simply catch fish for themselves but they supply everybody else. That is the question successive governments have carefully avoided. Once fisheries scientists determine how many fish can be sustainably harvested, who should receive that allocation?

Farms & Farm Machinery
Should public policy favour the relatively small number of people fortunate enough to own offshore fishing boats, or the millions of Western Australians whose only access to fresh local seafood is through the commercial sector? For more than two decades, governments have allowed the allocation to drift one decision at a time. Every time sustainability requires a reduction in catch, the easiest political option has been to carve another slice from the commercial sector. No recreational lobby is ever going to front a Fisheries Minister and say, “We’ve got enough. Take the next cut from us.” Their job is to maximise their members’ share of the resource, and they have been incredibly successful at it. Every future Fisheries Minister will face exactly the same dilemma. Western Australia’s population will continue growing and the number of seafood consumers will continue growing. Recreational participation will also continue growing; however fish stocks remain finite. If allocation continues to be determined by political pressure rather than long-term policy, the commercial
Dhufish is a popular Western Australian product which has risen in price. Image: Valerii Evlakhov/stock.adobe.com
sector will continue shrinking until there is no commercial catch left in WA. That is why the WA Legislative Council’s decision to establish a Parliamentary Inquiry into demersal fishing is so important. For the first time in decades, Parliament has acknowledged this debate is about much more than counting fish. It is about fairly allocating a publicly owned resource between competing users. My submission to the inquiry deliberately avoids arguing about fish biology. Fisheries scientists should determine how many fish can be sustainably harvested. Government and then parliament should determine how the benefits of that sustainable catch are shared. My proposal is simple – allocate half
the sustainable catch to the commercial sector and half to the recreational sector. If stocks recover, both sectors share the increase equally. If stocks decline, both sectors share the reduction equally. The endless political battle between recreational and commercial disappears because the allocation itself no longer changes. Some will disagree with 50-50, and that’s perfectly reasonable. But if not 50-50, then what is fair? 60-40? 80-20? How much do the hardcore offshore fishers need? Let’s finally have an honest debate about allocation instead of pretending every decision is simply “following the science”. Science tells us how many fish can be caught. It does not tell us who should catch them.

INDUSTRY NEWS Kate, Linton, Melinda, Mitch and Mariah Brimblecombe with the grower of the year award. Images: Cotton Australia
Cotton champions The largest cohort of future cotton industry leaders has graduated, while a Queensland family was honoured at the industry’s awards This year’s Australian Cotton Conference has seen Queensland’s Brimblecombe family crowned as grower of the year, while the industry’s next crop of leaders was also celebrated. Mitch and Mariah Brimblecombe, along with Mitch’s parents Linton and Melinda Brimblecombe, who operate as Moira Farming in Queensland’s Lockyer Valley, received the industry’s top honour during the Gold Coast event. The family has farmed their land for more than 100 years and grow cotton in rotation with vegetable crops, having a focus on people, workplace culture and continuous improvement. They are also actively involved in cotton and vegetable research and trials, with Mitch describing cotton as being an important part of their operations. “We know that diversification is quite important to what we do. Looking to our history has helped us look into cotton for our future,” he says. “Cotton has a really good fit in our business; it’s a less labour-intensive crop than the vegetables and it’s also a globally traded commodity. “That gives our business marketing risk diversity and is a different cash flow to the vegetables. “Often summer gets a little bit quieter for our vegetable production, whereas that’s when the cotton ramps up and can keep our machinery going, our staff going and our land working for us.” Farms & Farm Machinery visited Moira Farming last year with the profile of their work available to read online. Other awards at the cotton conference included the high achiever of the year, which went to Rhys Herbert and Trish Carroll from Pastoral Properties (Cropping) in Warra Warra on Queensland’s Darling Downs. Their large-scale irrigated and dryland operation has increased cotton yields by around two bales per hectare over the past

five years and improved fibre quality through better planting timing and careful variety selection. The young cotton achiever of the year was Alexandria Doyle, a grower services representative with Louis Dreyfus Company based in Emerald, while Dr Katie Broughton was named researcher of the year. Service to industry awards went to former Cotton Research and Development Corporation executive director Allan Williams and the late Elizabeth Alexander, who held various roles in the industry for more than two decades. Next generation Ahead of the conference, the largest cohort in the Australian Future Cotton Leaders Program’s history graduated. The 17 emerging leaders come from across the country and cotton supply chain, with the group already delivering practical projects designed to support the industry’s future. “The Future Cotton Leaders Program is about building confidence, capability and networks, but it is also about action,” Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay says. “This cohort has embraced the challenge of identifying issues that matter to their businesses, regions and communities, and then developing practical projects that can make a difference. “From developing planning templates and toolbox meetings to retain staff, to connecting school students with cotton farms, and hosting conversations about
women’s leadership and career pathways in the cotton industry, these projects show the value of investing in emerging leaders.” One participant, Jason Salvetti from Far North Queensland, is developing a practical online resource to support growers during the wet season in an area where the industry is still relatively young. He plans to use social media and videos to share what it is happening on his farm, including decision making and lessons learned. “The idea is to create a place people can go to find out information,” he says. “Cotton is a great industry but it’s always tricky when you’re starting off and you have to deal with a unique environment like that in Far North Queensland. “So if we can share what we have learned and help others get started, hopefully we can help grow the cotton industry in the north.” This year’s full list of graduates is: • Emily O’Shannessy, CGS, Kununurra, WA • Alexander Stephens, McVeigh Partnership Pty Ltd, MacAlister, QLD • Angus Dalgliesh, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Cloncurry, QLD • Bridget Bender, AGnVET, Emerald, QLD • Henry Perry, Perry Farming, Goondiwindi, QLD • Jason Salvetti, Salvetti Farming Co, Arriga, QLD • Lauren Roellgen, Tyunga Farms, Brookstead, QLD • Liam Blackwell, Clark Farming Group, Billa Billa, QLD • Ashley Hollis, Cotton Australia, Sydney, NSW • Georgia Carrigan, Australian Food and Fibre, Warren, NSW • Georgina Rowlands, Australian Food and Fibre, Ashley, NSW • Hugh Lennon, Hancock Agriculture, Merah North, NSW • Lachie Holz, B&W Rural Walgett, Walgett, NSW • Jessie Schwager, Priag Marketing, Narrabri, NSW • Megan Baker, CRDC, Narrabri, NSW • Natalie Aquilina, Cotton Seed Distributors, Narrabri, NSW • Sam Ryan, RynCo Enterprises, Murrami, NSW
The research aims to boost domestic coffee production. Image: Shirley and Johan/ stock.adobe.com
Something brewing AgriFutures Australia has colaunched what it describes as the largest coordinated investment in the nation’s coffee research and development to date Developing Australia’s domestic coffee production is the aim of a new $4 million research program. Improving productivity, testing new coffee varieties, strengthening biosecurity and exploring opportunities to expand production are among the program’s goals, which involves AgriFutures Australia, Southern Cross University, Plant Health Australia, the University of Queensland and the Australian Grown Coffee Association. Currently, less than one per cent of the two billion cups of coffee consumed in Australia each year have been produced domestically, something which AgriFutures Australia identifies as an opportunity to change.
Water security The National Farmers’ Federation Summit raised ongoing questions on food security amid instability in international markets Industry leaders in irrigation have requested for water to be included in the Australia’s food security strategy as a critical input, announced during the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) Summit last month. The summit brought together leading figures in agriculture from across the country where the key issues for food producers are often aired, including discussions around the developing national food security strategy. While the industry recently celebrated the milestone of $100 billion in farmgate production, four years ahead of schedule, NFF president Hamish McIntyre says addressing instability in international markets is as important as security at the kitchen table. “A shipping disruption can mean fuel or fertiliser does not arrive when we need it,” McIntyre says. “A decision made overseas can change
“Australians are among the world’s most passionate coffee drinkers, yet almost every cup we drink starts overseas. That presents an enormous opportunity for Australian growers,” AgriFutures Australia general manager of levied and emerging industries Samantha Beresford says. “Demand for locally produced food and beverages continues to grow, while global coffee supply is becoming increasingly vulnerable to climate pressures, pests and diseases. “This investment is about ensuring Australian growers have the research, innovation and confidence to produce more world-class coffee while protecting the industry from future biosecurity threats.” Part of the research will involve evaluating which coffee varieties are suited to Australian conditions, along with strengthening biosecurity preparedness.
Far North Queensland, south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales are the nation’s main coffee growing regions, with potential for this to expand to other areas. “Australia has ideal conditions for producing premium coffee, but continued growth depends on giving growers access to the best science, varietals and practical tools,” program lead and Southern Cross University researcher Professor Tobias Kretzschmar says. “This program builds on five years of successful variety selection trials and brings together leading expertise from across the country to solve industry challenges around sustainable intensification and biosecurity, ensuring research delivers benefits for growers.” The Australian Coffee Research Program will run for five years.

the price we receive for our cattle or cotton, and a regulation written in Canberra can change what we do in a paddock thousands of kilometres away.” The Feeding Australia: A National Food Security Strategy, currently under development by the federal government, aims to address challenges faced by food producers, processors and wholesalers, assisted by the input of farmers, industry and the community. National Irrigators’ Council, NSW Irrigators’ Council (NSWIC), Ricegrowers’ Association, Citrus Australia and Cotton Australia believe securing water is crucial to securing Australia’s food system,
making a joint statement at the summit. NSWIC chief executive officer Dr Madeleine Hartley says the access and provision of agricultural water is important to providing security to the country’s food system. “If food security is a national priority, then protecting Australia’s capacity to produce food must be part of every major water policy decision,” she says. “Water policy is food policy. Australia needs to start treating it that way.” More information about the national food security strategy can be viewed online via www.agriculture.gov.au/

The project is helping rice growers to make better on-farm decisions. Image: f430dew/stock.adobe.com
Australian rice growers are being helped by a project which aims to provide practical insights that enable better on-farm decisions. Up to 95 per cent grower use has been reported by the AgriFutures Australia levy-funded project, which has developed a real-time rice management dashboard. This gives growers and advisers clearer visibility into what is happening in the paddock and has been developed at the University of New England in partnership with the NSW Department of Primary Industries and SunRice. AgriFutures Australia general manager of levied and emerging industries Samantha Beresford says the nation’s rice industry contributes more than $1 billion annually to the national economy and is a farming sector where decision making it crucial. “For many rice growers, the challenge is not simply growing a crop,” she says.
“It is making the right decisions at the right time, in a production system where the margin for error is narrowing. “The production area can fluctuate significantly depending on water allocations and seasonal conditions. “At the same time, the operating environment is becoming more complex. Water availability remains constrained, input costs are high and seasonal variability is harder to predict. “With that in mind, access to timely, practical information is no longer optional. It is central to maintaining productivity and giving growers confidence in the decisions they make. “This is where digital innovation will make a tangible difference on farm.” The dashboard brings together satellite imagery, weather data and crop monitoring to generate practical insights into biomass, crop development and nitrogen uptake during the season.
This information is actionable, Beresford adds, with growers and agronomists able to identify emerging issues several weeks earlier in some cases. It can predict key dates such as panicle initiation, draining and see variability within a paddock, enabling growers to pinpoint both high and low performing areas. The dashboard has now moved into a commercialisation phase, with the potential to expand its usage beyond rice. Beresford says having access to this information will enable better decision making, therefore benefiting the whole industry, and is excited by the potential of this dashboard. “The results from this work are already being seen on the ground,” she says. “In the most recent rice season, dashboard utilisation reached as high as 95 per cent among growers, reflecting the value being placed on timely, data-driven insights. “Importantly, an AgriFutures benefit-cost analysis found a six-to-one return on every dollar invested by levy payers, reinforcing the tangible value of this investment for the industry. “While tools like this do not replace grower experience or local knowledge, they do provide another layer of insight that helps connect the dots earlier and with clarity.”
Game changer
Initial results have been described as “excellent” during the trial of a new compound to reduce methane emissions in cattle. It uses a “prodrug” approach with the compound being inactive when consumed and only becoming active after it is ingested by ruminants. Currently, the most effective method to reduce methane emissions delivers bromoform directly into the animal’s rumen by adding it to either the feed or water consumed. This new approach converts the starting molecule into bromoform inside the rumen, using natural digestive processes to break down the prodrug into the target active bromoform which can then immediately act to stop methane production. Preliminary studies took place at the University of Western Australia, with the effects then tested in a lab-based batch fermentation system using real rumen fluid.
Methane production was inhibited even at low doses, leaving developer and tester Rumin8 excited about its potential. A real-world trial on cattle showed methane reductions of up to 86 per cent, however Rumin8 says further trials are required to provide more substantial data. “This alternative approach is appealing because it provides new options for producers, leveraging the industry leading methane reducing power of bromoform,” Rumin8 CEO David Messina says. “With efficient conversion in the cow’s rumen, we have options to further reduce costs and enhance scalability, therefore supporting broader commercial adoption.” Further laboratory trials are taking place with patents already filed, and Rumin8 says the new compound will be added to its range if similar performance continues.
Nice for rice A project helping rice growers to use real-time data to improve decision making has been described as delivering a six-to-one return on investment

INDUSTRY NEWS Queensland aims to increase its cotton production. Image: Inge/stock.adobe.com
Northern growth Producing 100,000 bales of cotton and growing grain and pulse production to $100 million annually within the next decade is the goal of a targeted Queensland government investment. Alongside Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) and Grains and Research Development Corporation (GRDC), the $5.3 million project will deliver scientific agricultural research and development. Known as ‘unlocking farming systems for North Queensland’, the initiative will initially focus on the upper and lower Flinders catchment – an area where the government says broadacre cropping currently contributes about $13.2 million each year. It will be followed by the Gilbert catchment, with Department of Primary
Industries (DPI) staff working with growers and agronomists “to develop and capitalise on agronomy tactics to optimise productivity in this pioneering production environment”. The Queensland government has a previously stated goal of increasing primary production output to $30 billion by 2030, with primary industries minister Tony Perrett saying this initiative will help accelerate production opportunities for both cotton and grain. “There is a significant shift underway in the north-west from a traditionally grazing region into cotton, grains and pulses which provides an opportunity for diversification which will support the region to be more resilient,” he says. “By using the DPIs expertise we are supercharging the expansion of cropping,
by developing better techniques and optimised production methods suited to this new farming region. “In partnership with CRDC and GRDC our scientists will be working with farmers and graziers in the region to understand how to get the best performance out of local soils and conditions to develop a prosperous and sustainable industry.” The initiative has also set a target of producing 100,000 bales of cotton and growing grain and pulse production to $100 million per year by 2035, with CRDC executive director Allan Williams saying it is a key priority to support sustainable development. “Research is critical to helping growers unlock new opportunities and ensuring development is productive, resilient and sustainable,” he says. “This partnership is an important collaboration, investing in the people, knowledge and regional capability needed to support the long-term success of cotton and grain industries in North Queensland.”
Managing weeds
Managing weeds has required alternative tactics for Australian farmers, as rising costs of inputs such as fuel, fertiliser and herbicide have combined with supply issues due to the Middle East conflict. GRDC agronomists have reported the new approach from growers in their Weed Management Initiative (WMI) report, which says that crop competition and optical spot-spraying are two ways to improve herbicide efficiency and reduce costs. “With input costs rising, there is an opportunity for growers to explore proven alternatives,” WMI consulting agronomist and ADAMA Australia market development manager Bevan Addison says. “Weeds are expensive to manage, so if new practices or adjustments in weed control tactics can reduce unnecessary spraying while maintaining yields, it’s worth speaking with an agronomist or other suitable adviser. GRDC has a mixing and batching guide for herbicides and other products, which Addison says is a good reference point to help growers reduce the number of paddock passes. He says that while some combinations are beneficial and some mixes work, growers should not push beyond proven practices without understanding risks. “Skipping pre-emergent herbicides and relying on post-emergent options – particularly in canola and legumes – has
led to poor weed control in some regions,” he says. “Early treatments can sometimes improve the performance of follow-up applications. “Getting the fundamentals right early is critical. Correct herbicide application remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve results. “Higher water volumes and slower application speeds can significantly boost grass-weed control. “Conversely, targeting broadleaf weeds in early stages of growth can improve herbicide performance, particularly where resistance is emerging.” One Western Australian grower – Cathy Cooke from Mollerin in the shire of Koorda – has a variety of crops and says her family have been proactive in controlling weeds using several management techniques. “It’s a multiple pronged approach we’ve adopted, so we’re not just reliant on herbicides or a single solution,” she says. “One of the most simple and effective ways we’ve found to save costs is to allow our livestock to graze longer in the paddocks, which we see is beneficial for weed control and in some cases also keeps the soil in good condition for the next season of planting.” GRDC provides a weed management resource page for growers with actionable advice, and this can be viewed online.

Smart grants Farmers in a selected New South Wales region will have access to agtech grants thanks to a new government policy A $1.4 million Smart Farming Program will enable farmers in the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) to access grants for new agtech products. NSW energy minister Penny Sharpe announced the program at the National Renewables in Agriculture Conference held in Orange, which forms part of the state government’s $128 million investment for the REZ. “These grants, available thanks to the Renewable Energy Zone, will help farmers invest in practical technologies that improve productivity, safety and profitability,” she says. “Through initiatives like this, we’re ensuring communities hosting critical renewable energy infrastructure see
Joint effort The federal and Queensland governments have announced a near-$5 million investment to support the horticultural industry in dealing with fruit flies The investment, totalling $4.7 million, strengthens Australia’s fruit fly management capability and protect valuable horticultural export markets through the Building Resilience to Manage Fruit Fly Package. Fruit flies have been described as one of the most significant biosecurity threats to Australia’s horticulture industry, affecting productivity and international market access. “Effective fruit fly management is critical to protecting growers, which is why we are supporting the sector to strengthen their resilience against the pest,” federal agriculture minister Julie Collins says. “This $4.7 million investment... will strengthen Australia’s fruit fly research capability and help ensure growers and exporters can continue to access valuable export markets.” The funding is supporting the development of new infrastructure at
tangible benefits now, while building a stronger future for regional NSW.” Under the program, farmers can apply for grants to cover up to 75 per cent of the cost of agtech products up to a maximum value of $35,000. These products such as soil and water sensors, crop and livestock monitoring tools, drones and fuel tank sensors are designed to improve productivity and business resilience. Connectivity devices are also included in the program, meaning farmers can access real-time data and automate operations. To be eligible, farmers will need to complete an Agtech Fundamentals workshop, which is delivered as part of the government’s Farms of the Future program.
Applications for the grant will open in the coming months. “The government is backing NSW farmers to embrace innovation and technology that can improve farm performance and support the longterm success of our state’s agricultural industries,” NSW agriculture minister Tara Moriarty says. “More than 1,500 farmers across NSW have already taken part in Farms of the Future Agtech Fundamentals training. “Our recently launched online learning hub, the Agtech Academy, will make it even easier for producers to build their understanding of agtech and assess opportunities for their own operations.” The Central-West Orana REZ is the first renewable energy zone in NSW, centred by Dubbo and Dunedoo, and aims to group new wind and solar power generations into locations where it can be efficiently stored and transmitted.

the Queensland Department of Primary Industries’ Redlands research facility, where the National Export Market Access Centre for Horticulture will be housed, creating a national hub for fruit fly market access research. The investment will deliver new fumigation infrastructure, a netted
orchard and dedicated pest management testing areas to support research and market access requirements. New facilities are also set to strengthen Australia’s ability to respond to exotic fruit fly outbreaks and reduce the impact of fruit fly-related trade barriers on growers and exporters.

Award winner
Haulotte showcased some of the newest features on its machinery at HIRE 26
Global lifting equipment manufacturer Haulotte claimed a prestigious award at this year’s Hire Industry Excellence Awards The recent HIRE 26 exhibition and conference, held in Sydney, is considered the main event for the hire industry in Australia, bringing industry stakeholders together to share ideas, grow their businesses and create lasting relationships. As part of this, the Hire Industry Excellence Awards pay tribute to the exceptional standards of service and innovation displayed throughout the sector. This year, the Supplier of the Year for Access Equipment award was presented to Haulotte, which was recognised by industry peers for its excellence in customer service, innovation, safety and performance. “We look at everything we do in the business and try and make it better,” Haulotte Australia general manager Keith Clarke says. “We ask customers how we can be better for them and strive to be better each year. I want to say a big thank you to the team back home for their continued dedication.” Haulotte saw this year’s show as an opportunity to showcase some of the newest features on its machines and remind customers what it brings to the Australian hire industry. On the exhibition floor, visitors were able to see these features up close and discuss how they can add value to their fleet. Clarke says one feature that generat-
ed significant interest was the new extra step for scissor lifts, which allows an extra 49cm to the platform. “We listen carefully to customers and users. Features like the extra step are developed directly from their feedback and have broad appeal across multiple industries and facilities where accessing inside roof cavities is a requirement,” Clarke says. Also on display was the new HA20 E PRO articulated boom lift, the latest addition to Haulotte’s electric rough terrain range. This model offers 100 per cent electric operation, producing zero greenhouse
gas emissions while delivering performance equivalent to a diesel machine. The machine is also stacked with various Haulotte feature options including extra reach and transport handle. “The transport handle is an addition to our newest booms and aims to keep people safe when loading and unloading machines for transport,” Clarke says. “When paired with the Activ’ lighting system, the safety of users is heightened.” For more information on Haulotte’s range of products, visit haulotte.com.au
