Classic Crawlin' the Hume Image: makin' a mile photography

For truck enthusiasts around Australia keen for a great excuse to make the journey from the east to west coast, the growing event that is the Western Australian Mack Muster de nitely ts that bill.

What started as a reason to get Mack truck owners together in one place to celebrate their brand is quickly growing to become Western Australia's "truck show", where owners, drivers and the truck-loving public have the chance to show o and admire trucks of all brands. Our correspondent Warren Aitken made the trek across the Nullabor to attend and provides some fantastic coverage of the event from page 56.

For the historic truck lovers out there this year's Crawlin' the Hume event was a big hit with

hundreds of trucks making the journey from Melbourne along the old Hume Highway in a rolling tribute to Australia's trucking heritage. The event, which only happens every two years, attracted fans and photographers in droves (see page 72).

This month's restoration stories include a variety of truck brands including a classic Volvo, a stunning Mack and a classy Kenworth.

For the music lovers out there we've caught up with one of the drivers who toured the country with the musical equipment for the Pink concerts. The gear, which Pink owns herself, arrived in country in shipping containers and was moved from one show to another by a dedicated team of transporters with experience in dealing with the nuances of stadium bump in routines (see page 128).

And, in a clear indication that the next generation of truck lovers is alive and well, we meet 11-year-old Leon Carter who saved up his hard-earned cash to buy a rare Oshkosh he plans to restore with the help of Dad (page 116).

ATA crowns industry’s best

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) announced its yearly awards at the Trucking Australia 24 conference in April, recognising those going above and beyond across the transport industry. There were six di erent awards presented, with each having two or three nominees, and we have a bit about each winner to share.

Outstanding Contribution to the Australian Trucking Industry

Bill Manton of Simon National Carriers

Manton is currently the national training manager for Simon National Careers, and has more than four decades in the transport industry. He has worked as a truck driver, manager and trainer, including for Volvo Group Australia. In 2017, Manton had a vital role in reviewing the Queensland TAFE system’s road transport training packages. He also worked closely with Austroads on its review of the National Heavy Vehicle Driver Competency Framework.

National Professional Driver of the Year

Joshua Ulbrich, Ross Transport

Multi combination driver Joshua Ulbrich of Ross Transport in Port Kembla, NSW has been crowned as the National Professional Driver of the Year for 2024.

The award recognises drivers who continue to put in the hard yards, honouring the changing freight task and demands on drivers.

Ulbrich began his transport career in the army, which shaped his disciplined and professional approach to driving. He is a volunteer committee member of ‘Truckies against Bullying,’ which was created by a truck driver and his wife who chose to take a stand against bullying in schools and workplaces.

National Trucking Industry Woman of the Year

Jenny Fellows, Fellows Bulk Transport Administration manager for Fellows Bulk Transport, Jenny Fellows has been involved in the transport industry for more than 25 years. She co-owns the business with her husband Paul, and shares her experience as a mentor in Transport Women Australia’s mentoring program.

Fellows famously established the Deniliquin Driver Education Program in 2006. It is now a week long course that teaches school students how to share the road safely and has expanded from Deniliquin to outlying schools. Fellows honoured fellow nominee Michelle Harwood, executive director at the Tasmanian Transport Association, saying the award was ‘won by both women’.

National Training Excellence Award

Frasers Livestock Transport and South East Queensland Hauliers

The National Training Excellence Award was given

both Frasers Livestock Transport and South East Queensland Hauliers for their e orts in this space.

Frasers designed its own livestock transport training course for the industry to use, which is coordinated by the Queensland Trucking Association.

Since 2020, ten workshops have been held across the state for more than 200 participants. More than 90 per cent of the participants said that the skills and knowledge they gained from the course would enable them to do their jobs more safely and e ciently.

In 2023, SEQH introduced its comprehensive training program, Road Masters, which includes assessments for new drivers, upskill training, incident training and upgrading employees’ licences from HC to MC.

The program has had a signi cant positive impact on SEQH’s workforce, fostering skilled, competent and safety conscious drivers. The program has also increased the utilisation of SEQH’s eet.

TruckSafe John Kelly Memorial Award

Marley’s Transport

The John Kelly Memorial Award was awarded to the company that has most strongly committed to TruckSafe guidelines to make their business and operations safer. Marley’s Transport embarked on their TruckSafe journey in 1999 to improve their safety and documentation standards, and has been committed to constantly monitoring and improving the safety of its workers since then.

Don Watson Memorial Award

Denis Robertson

The Don Watson Memorial Award is one of the most special to earn, and ATA founder Denis Robertson was honoured to receive it.

Robertson served as the chair of the ATA from 1994 to 1996 and was a personal friend of Don Watson before his passing.

A er the Gra on truck and bus crash in 1989, Robertson joined the leaders of three other trucking associations to recognise the need for a national body, which became the ATA.

He is a member of the ATA’s General Council and its Industry Technical Council, as well as the committee that manages the o ce building that the ATA developed under his leadership.

We take a look back at where it all began for Freightliner in Australia

Freightliner’s Australian story began the same year as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the launch of the rst GPS satellite into space – 1989.

However, the history of the company goes back much further than that, with many twists and turns along the way.

Here, we take a look at the evolution of the brand, the trucks they released over the years, and where Freightliner is today.

1929 US haulage company Consolidated

The FLC model was perfect for rugged o -road work

The first Freightliners sold in Australia were assembled at Daimler Truck HQ in Mulgrave

Freightways is founded in Washington State by Leland James.

1932

James, dissatis ed with the tare weight and hill-climbing performance of trucks on the market, decides to design his own, in collaboration with Fageol Trucks.

1937

The rst CF100 hits the road, with an aluminium cab (instead of the usual steel) and a four-cylinder Cummins diesel engine.

1940

Within a few years, Freightways Manufacturing Company opens, beginning production in Salt Lake City, Utah. The name of the company changes to Freightliner Corporation in 1942.

Freightliner trucks are much lighter than their competitors, so they quickly become very popular.

1950

The Eastern Freightliner debuts, and Freightliner sells its first transcontinental

cab-over sleeper, capable of hauling a 35-foot trailer.

1951

Freightliner signs a distribution agreement with the White Motor Company, vastly expanding its network.

The company’s slogan at the time is “Lightweight – More Freight”.

1953

Freightliner introduces the first overhead sleeper, the WF64 – an alternative-fuel truck

capable of using gasoline, diesel or lique ed propane.

1965

The Freightliner Turboliner is introduced. Powered by a Boeing model 553 gas turbine, it weighs 2,400 pounds less than a similar truck with a diesel engine.

1973

The Powerliner, a truck with a huge 2,000-square-inch radiator and 600-horsepower engine, rolls o the production line.

1981

Freightliner is purchased by Daimler-Benz AB, leading to sales doubling over the next ten years.

1982

Two FLC120 trucks are converted to right-hand drive and shipped to Australia, undergoing intense testing. Despite its durability, the FLC120 is too long for Australian regulations, but the FLC112 is just right. Unfortunately for Aussies, the FLC112 is very popular in the US, so product availability is limited and it

takes a while to make its way over here.

1989

Freightliner nally enters the Australian market, with trucks speci cally designed for conditions Down Under.

The rst Melbourne-assembled, righthand drive FLC112 hits local roads with a tough steel cab, Cummins NT engines and Roadranger gearboxes. It proves an immediate hit, though product shortages mean that it takes four years to sell the rst 500 trucks.

1994

The rst Business Class model in Australia is released – the FL80. It’s launched with a Cat 3126 engine and a Cummins C8.3 as an option, but the C8.3 proved more popular.

1995

A lower-spec, short-haul version of the FLC112 is released, with single headlamps replacing the line-hauler’s twin pair and a choice of Cummins M11, Cat 3176 or Series 60 11.1-litre diesels. This spec is fully imported, as tari s had been reduced.

A larger Business Class FL106 is also produced, with four-cylinder, 315hp Detroit

1997

The current Freightliner Cascadia is a world away from the classic Freightliners of the 1980s, with advanced radar safety technology and AMT transmissions that even use GPS to pick the right gear at the right time. Image: Cristian Brunelli.

The lower-spec FLC112 isn’t a huge seller, so in 1997 it is replaced by the Business Class FL112. It’s powered by a Cummins M11, with Eaton 13or 18-speed box, Rockwell RT-40-145 tandem and Airliner suspension.

1999

The new Century Class replaces the FLC112, a er 2012 trucks have been sold.

2000

A modern cab-over model called the Argosy lands in Australia. As these trucks were imported, they initially su ered from US production quality issues, and a relaunch was done in 2006 a er these had been corrected.

2002

The FL is replaced by the new M2 Business Class in the US. No right-hand drive engineering has been done on this truck, so it spells the end of the FL range in Australia.

2004

The Columbia bonneted model replaces the

FL112, becoming a favourite vocational model, especially as an agitator.

2012

A new chapter begins with the arrival of the brawny Coronado 122, featuring a bold design and DD15 engine.

2013

The Coronado 114, with its set-forward front axle, is the next model out the gate. It puts Freightliner back in the running for axleforward tipper and dog applications as well as 19 metre B-double roles.

2019

The Freightliner Cascadia, the best-selling heavy-duty truck in the US, arrives in Australia a er an extensive local testing program.

It introduces advanced active safety features as standard, as well as a driver’s airbag, features that had previously been limited to European cab-over models.

The new 13-litre 116 and 16-litre 126 Cascadia models set new benchmarks for safety, comfort, connectivity and Real Cost of Ownership (RCO), and prove popular with operators and drivers alike.

Overall, a total 10,344 vehicles were delivered to March 31 this year, compared to 10,458 for January to March 2023.

No slowing the heavy duty market

A record breaking 3,788 heavy duty trucks were delivered to Australian customers from January 1 to March 31 this year

The March truck sales results have been released by the Truck Industry Council and the T-Mark database shows a new Q1 record of 3,788 sales for the heavy-duty truck segment amidst a slight decline in overall sales across all categories.

Across the entire market of heavy-duty trucks, medium duty trucks, light duty trucks and commercial vans tracked by the T-Mark database, there was a drop of 1.98 per cent for Q1 2024 versus Q1 2023.

Heavy Vehicles – Monthly Sales

In the biggest trucks, the heavy-duty segment, Volvo stepped up to deliver more than 11 trucks a day in March, with its total sales of 362 heavy trucks for the 31 days putting it well ahead of its nearest rival Kenworth for both the month of March, and for the quarter.

A total of 1,533 heavy duty trucks were handed over to customers in March 2024, contributing to a new first quarter sales record of 3,788 sales. This result eclipses the previous March quarter record of 3,615 heavy duty truck sales set in 2023.

The results show Volvo sold 788 trucks to March 31, accounting for 20.8 per cent of the market, while Kenworth clocked up 701 sales, reflecting 18.5 per cent.

Chasing Volvo and Kenworth into the top 10 spots for sales so far this year are Isuzu with 548 sales, Scania on 314, Mack on 240, Mercedes-Benz on 233, UD Trucks on 200, Fuso on 187, DAF on 160, and Hino on 131.

Medium duty

(Cab-chassis type vehicle with GVM > 8,000kg and GCM up to and including 39,000kg)

The medium duty sector rose 8.9 per cent from 1,598 sales for Q1, 2023 to 1,741 sales for Q1, 2024.

The Q1 statistics show Isuzu accounted for 53.1 per cent of the 1,741 medium duty sales for the quarter this year, which is an increase on the 49.4 per cent of the market it snared for the same quarter last year. In terms of Isuzu truck sales, it sold 790 medium duty trucks in Q1, 2023 versus 925 medium duty trucks in the first three months of this year.

The top 10 brands in terms of sales volumes for medium duty recorded this quarter were: Isuzu (925), Hino (494), Fuso (173), Iveco (29), Hyundai (27), Mercedes-Benz (21), Volvo (19), DAF (12), MAN (9) and SEA Electric (7).

Light duty

(Cab-chassis type vehicle with GVM of 3,501kg to 8,000kg inclusive)

The news is not so bright for the light duty market this quarter with it showing a drop of 20.3 per cent. The results of 3,129 sales for the quarter fell 793 trucks short of the 3,922 light duty trucks sold in Q1, 2023.

In the light duty category the top 10 sellers so far this year are: Isuzu (1420), Fuso (516), Hino (506), Iveco (302), Mercedes-Benz (159), Fiat (107), Hyundai (49), Renault (35), Ford (12) and Foton Mobility (12).

Gorski Engineering o ers expert advice on tipper trucks and trailers in Hardox and aluminium

Finding the trailer that best suits your truck and your transporting needs is key to maximising productivity on every journey

When it comes to hauling construction materials such as sand, gravel or rock to and from a worksite, it makes sense to load to the maximum allowable payload and optimise every trip.

A bigger load each time might mean one less trip per day, or a shorter time required to get the whole job done than otherwise would be possible.

It’s a chance to reduce costs such as fuel and tyre wear and an opportunity to maximise productivity of your truck and trailer set up for the industry you service.

Gorski Engineering has been listening closely to its customers working in this space and taken steps to respond to the high demand for maximising payloads on 6x4 truck and quad dog set ups with an overall length of under 19m.

Working together with Advantia Transport Consulting, a major Australian Performance Based Standards (PBS) Assessor, Gorski Engineering has developed a range of PBS-approved designs to meet maximum allowable payloads for a range of di erent truck and quad combinations.

Gorski specialises in the use of Hardox® and aluminium for too, enabling the team to maximise strength and minimise weight where required.

Gorski Engineering's Paul Baker says

by combining Gorski Engineering's engineering and manufacturing expertise with Advantia’s strong knowledge of heavy vehicle networks, heavy vehicle safety and infrastructure impacts, the duo has identified opportunities for improving heavy vehicle productivity and safety for the transport industry.

“One of the recent requests from our customers was to develop a truck and quad dog combination which will stand the test of time and deliver over 55t and 57.5t HML, all while keeping the overall combination length under 19m, which gives General Access for the combination,” Paul says.

Vehicles designated as falling within the General Access criteria are rigid and combination vehicles that meet standard design requirements such as mass and dimension limits that mean they generally do not need a permit to operate on roads.

For the industry Gorski’s recent client operates in, a General Access combination is a rigid tipper truck towing one trailer up to 19m in length – in particular a 6x4 truck and a quad dog.

Paul says on the technical side, there are two general requirements needed to meet the PBS standards.

1. T he truck front overhang from steer axle is to be no more than 900mm

2. T he wheelbase of 6x4 truck (steer axle to centre of drive group) is to be around 47004800mm

“From our experience, we have seen that Kenworth trucks (T410 SAR, T610 SAR, T909, W900 SAR) and Mack trucks (Trident) fit the requirements,” he says.

“With other models like Freightliner, DAF, European and Japanese trucks, we are still able to get close to 55t GML (general mass limit).

“These trucks, when paired with our short 7.65m quad trailer would deliver higher payloads and more productivity, while accessing tighter spaces normally only accessible by an under 19m combination.”

Working within the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s rules around Higher Mass Limits (HML) for certain vehicles, in particular around acceptable weight for tandem axle groups with road friendly suspensions, Gorski and Advantia have developed a range of combinations that maximise the opportunity for operators to work across Australia’s road networks while meeting federal and state laws.

“Depending on your truck wheelbase, we can custom build your drawbar to required length to get maximum PBS mass,” Paul says.

“Do not despair if you have a short wheelbase truck and you are in dire need of 56t, as we have options for you. We just have to make sure your 6x4 truck axle distance 1-3 is around 3.4m, then we can build a trailer and install an Over Dimension Drawbar later to ensure you can achieve your desired results.”

Paul says the experience of custom building for shorter wheelbase trucks has prompted Gorski to start the process of getting vehicle type approvals for Over Dimension Drawbars across all of its trailers to help speed up the processing time for PBS vehicle approvals.

To set the scene for our readers who may not have had the pleasure of attending this event, Alexandra is a picturesque country town about 130km north-east of Melbourne described as being the “gateway to the high country”.

It’s a major town in the local region, steeped in history, including strong links to cattle grazing, timber milling, and timber hauling.

It’s also popular with Victorians in particular for its proximity to shing, waterskiing and boating on nearby Lake Eildon and along the Goulburn River.

The annual Truck Ute & Rod Show happens on the city’s main streets which are turned into pedestrian-only zones on the Sunday, allowing all the trucks, utes and hot rods to park up and show o on bitumen, minimising dust and maximising the shine.

While the main event is de nitely the Sunday, the whole weekend has something to o er showgoers.

For the trucking community, there’s the opportunity to catch up for a barbecue at Yarck on the Saturday morning from 11am before the Alexandra Truck Run rolls out

Sunday morning kicks o from 4.30am for the exhibitors and drivers as they muster up, ready to be guided into place and ll the local streets with plenty of eye candy for the 15,000 or so expected visitors to enjoy.

Aside from the vehicles – and last year there were more than 350 trucks and 32 hot rods, registered – there’s a wood chop competition, children’s rides and arcade area too.

The town itself is another highlight for its classic country architecture and friendly customer service.

The organising committee have set the event up to give back to the people in the local area, so the local businesses open their doors to visitors all day, the local cafes provide food and co ee, and extra food stalls are drawn only from charity groups in the area raising money to support their causes (there is no food van alley here).

All profits from the event itself, including raffles and a charity auction, go back to local charities, with more than $33,000 allocated last year.

Adding to the ambiance of the event is the sound of music from the main stage, with organiser Andrew Embling saying this year’s line-up is sure to be a hit.

“Brooke Taylor and the Poison Spitting Gin Queens are locked in, and Golden Guitar winner Paul Costa will be here too. They are two great acts, people will love them,” Embling says.

The musicians will take turns rocking the stage from 10am to 2pm when the charity auction of donated truck goods is held, followed by the presentation of show trophies at 3.30pm.

The success of the event is helped by the backing of local businesses such as Simpsons Caltex Fuel which has donated a $1000 fuel voucher for the raffle and Alexandra IGA with a $1000 food voucher to spend in store.

Other raffle prizes include $1000 to spend at participating shops in Alexandra, and $500 for Thornton Butchers and Deli.

“The raffle’s $5 a ticket, only 2,000 tickets sold, and it’s drawn at 3.30pm,” Embling says.

This year’s show will also feature a special historical display from the local Country Fire Authority (CFA) which is celebrating its 150th year.

Other notable supporters backing this year’s event include Larsen’s Truck Sales, Hallam Truck Centre, Foodworks Alexandra, H.T. Turf Group, Fireblade Constructions, Multispares Truck Parts and Murrunindi Shire Council.

April saw an amazing display of trucks new and old being celebrated at the shows. From Crawlin' the Hume to Colac, tracking down trucks this month was the least of our worries.

We’ve scoured the show scenes once again and caught up with a few truck show enthusiasts who happily travel the country to share their passion projects with other enthusiasts and to see what’s new in the show scene.

Amazing Acco

The Colac Truck & Ute Show featured trucks of all makes and models, one particular International standing out amongst the rest.

Sporting a vibrant yellow paint, James Finn’s 1989 International Acco 2250d is undeniably eye-catching on the road.

Previously owned by the Camilleri’s for carting asphalt, James says he received the Acco in pretty good nick.

“It was neat and tidy, it just needed some attention and TLC,” he says.

“It had a bit of rust in the rails, so I fully split

the rails and cleaned all that out.

“Had a pretty fair old rebuild to keep it going.”

The rig sports a 260hp 8.3 Cummins that James says is just perfect.

With a passion for keeping it alive, he is o en tinkering around with the rig.

“I've done quite a lot of work to it just to keep it keep it roadworthy.”

Despite its age, the Acco is still a die-hard work horse, spending most of its time either as a water tanker or carting soil around.

“The truck works every day; I am driving it right now talking to you!”

You’d be surprised to hear the ’89 rig is the most modern truck in James’s collection.

Harbouring a collection of seven vintage rigs, he has some going back to 1970.

“I like anything with an injector pump. If it's old and hasn't got computers I like it,” he laughs.

“Nothing can make an old truck break down.”

clubs, James says he enjoys taking the trucks around to the shows.

“I love going to the shows to get some inspiration for future projects, and honestly it’s just something good and fun to do,” he says.

Often visiting the events closer to Melbourne, this rig is one to keep your eyes out for.

Kustom Kenworth

Many of the trucks in TCB Transports’ fleet turn heads, and for good reason.

Their 1997 Kenworth is no exception.

Managing director Don Madafferi says a lot of work has gone into making it such a stand-out rig.

“When we bought the truck 20 years ago, it was just a plain white Kenworth,” Don says.

“About four or five years ago, we decided to give it a really good birthday party and gave it a makeover.

“We have done a lot of modifications on it.”

Stripping the truck down, the team didn’t hold back.

Don is quite proud of the strapless fuel tanks they installed, which barely anybody has on their truck.

“We put on a customised bumper bar, gauges, grill, everything,” he says.

“The entire truck is airbrushed too.”

The team even got around to painting the motor and added American air horns.

The chrome caps on the back of the Kenworth were imported from the States, with Don saying he hasn’t seen any trucks in Australia with the same feature.

Still working hard, the truck is on the road everyday carting concrete panels for building sites in Melbourne.

“It definitely has a lot of heads turning on the road,” Don says.

If you thought the rig seemed familiar, you may have seen a glimpse of it on Channel 7.

Don and the team at TCB Transport have been filming their own tv show, Rides Down Under: Aussie Truckers and are heading into their second season.

“It’s been really great filming, and we are excited for everyone to see the next season.”

Part of Evans Earthmoving’s eet, the impressive rig is Nick’s pride and joy.

“It’s my baby, my obsession, my addiction I suppose you’d call it,” Nick laughs.

“I spend more time in that thing than I do at home mowing the lawn, let’s put it that way.”

Purchased brand new in 2018, Nick says he was itching to get his hands on it.

“Santa was a little bit late for Christmas in 2018, we got it on the 28th of December."

“We got to go down and see it come o the line in the Bayswater factory in Melbourne. It had all the bells and whistles.”

The truck tows a matching four-axle Hercules Quad Dog trailer, primarily carting road making material up in the bush.

“It usually carts stu out of the local quarries around the Colac area and up into the Otways.”

Needing something extra to help it out in the tough terrain, Nick added a tyre in ation system to the rig.

“Some of the places can be either really

wet and boggy, or really dry and sandy.

“I can just press a button in the cab and I can de ate the tires right down so they're nearly at, and it helps me get in and out easily.”

Apart from the necessary modi cations, Nick has also spent a fair share doing up the exterior.

“We obviously had all the decals put on the side. We had the stainless sun visor put on it and got the fuel tanks stainless steel wrapped."

“The exhaust stacks aren’t factory; we had the bigger exhaust put on it.

“We also chucked on the bigger bumper bar, a ermarket bumper bar on it.”

The impressive Kenworth has garnered attention everywhere it goes, recently taking home Best Tipper at the Colac Truck & Ute Show.

“We even won three awards at Koroit, two victories and a runner-up.

“It’s just crazy. The whole family gets involved, we love heading out to the shows, it’s a family a air.

“The kids will travel around to the truck shows and sometimes they go without me. They don't even worry about waiting for dad,” he chuckles.

JWhen the floodgates opened the crowds piled in along Mack Alley

may be mistaken, but I am pretty sure that two years ago when I attended my very first WA Mack Muster, I couldn’t wait to start writing up my rundown of the show. In fact, I remember racing through airport check-in and finding one of those primordial torture devices known as an airport seat with such gusto and enthusiasm, overly keen to get my thoughts down on paper. The buzz of an epic weekend was dwarfing the uncomfortable anticipation of a five-hour flight home. The euphoria of a three-day trucking carnival had my fingers typing faster than an old-school Hume Highway runner and my thesaurus was running out of ways to say awesome.

That was my first experience of the WA Mack Muster, just over two years ago and now I have returned for the biennial event and my eagerness to spread the story of the WA Mack Muster remains just as high. In fact, when I factor in all the changes involved in this year’s show, I’d say my eagerness has in fact increased.

The first change was all about me. This year I didn’t want to just attend the event. I wanted to really get involved, so I opted to ‘be one’ with this amazing show. With a lot of help from the team at Auswide Transport Solutions, I managed to get a load to run across the paddock with an exceptionally cool truck that I could pilot, then clean, polish and enter in this year's WA Mack Muster, held on March 24.

That’s why this year I’m not sitting waiting on my cattle class section to board for a long trip home. Instead, I am sitting in the bunk of 2022 Kenworth SAR writing this story, parked in a very crowded rest area in Coolgardie. Waiting for my logbook to allow me to make my very long way back to Brisbane. So that is the first major change in regards to this year's show. I went all in on this epic event.

The second major change is with the show itself. Technically I guess you could call it more of an evolution than change, but there are far too many syllables in a word that size and it didn’t fit with the narrative I was trying to portray. Let's stick with change. The 2024 Mack Muster, held in Australia's sunniest city

(Perth averages eight hours of sunshine per day) has changed, it has added more trucks, more food vans, more people and generally more awesomeness. If it wasn’t already a must on everyone’s truck show calendar, the evolution shown this year has now moved it to be classed as definite.

While I would dearly love to focus entirely on me, drumming up respect for the hours and hours I spent cleaning, polishing, recleaning and repolishing my ride for this year's show, I won’t, though if I do say so, the SAR was absolutely popping. I will instead focus on the show and shy away from the accolades I feel I deserve.

First things first. This huge event on the WA social calendar may often be referred to purely as the WA Mack Muster, but the full title is the WA Mack Muster and Truck Show. For while it started out as a way to gather a few like-minded ‘Bulldog Buffs’ together for a few beers, it is now a full-blown truck show and is by no means limited solely to Super-Liner supporters. In fact, with the addition of this year's designated ‘Kenworth Corner,’ I think the Kenworth bug outnumbered the iconic bulldog statue by a fair bit. It is also worth noting the legendary Hulk Kenworth of Ryan Demasi deservedly took out this year's Truck of the Show.

In case you weren’t along for the ride in 2022 when I covered the show, or in case you are like me and hardly remember last week's roadhouse menu much less a two-year-old article, allow me to give a little overview of how this show originated.

Like every great idea, it began with a beer or six. The founding fathers, as we shall call them, are WA Limestone director Steve Della Bona and CTS Low Loaders director Jason Clatworthy, two men with two immaculate Mack Valueliners. Between them they have a massive Mack collection, but it was their Valueliners casting a shadow over the beers that day when they concocted the idea of a Mack Muster back in 2019.

The initial idea was just to have a weekend at Steve's farm, with fellow fans of the iconic bulldog. A couple of beers, a few rums and a handful of sausages – simple. Then it started to grow, one idea led to another and another, and pretty soon the beers were gone. The sausages were eaten and one of Western Australia's premier wedding and event locations, Quarry Farms, was about to play host to a fully-fledged Mack Muster.

Steve and Jason put a lot of effort into drinking and thinking, bringing in the likes of Matt Lawrence in order to do the fun stuff, like organising it all.

The first show back in 2020 took a good 12 months of preparation. The idea first sparked in November 2019 and was in full flight in November 2020, all done with a small committee of just eight. Steve and Jason,

as well as Clem Catalano, Gerald Cunnold and Renee Whitsed from Truck Centre WA, Brand McNee of WA Hino, and Ross Cunningham from Rentco.

It was also decided that along with it being a great way to get the truck nuts together, it would also be a nice way to raise some funds for charity. With many of the committee members having had immediate and close experience with cancer, the decision was made to work with the world-renowned Harry Perkins Institute, whose goal is to make cancer a non-lethal disease.

When the inaugural show was held in 2020 it was an instant success. They had 140 trucks from all over Australia turn up. The public open day saw 3500 people through the gates to check out the trucks and the event raised over $100,000.

Jump ahead to the second showing in March 2022 and everything went up a level with more than 200 trucks on display, over 6500 people wandering around and more than $250,000 raised.

Round three, 2024’s show, and there were 330 trucks parked up and over 8000 spectators.

The amount raised? Well, they are still adding that up as we speak, but it will be well above their goal of $250,000 again.

Charity auction

Any of you who have had to add up your driving hours, night hours, rest hours and all the other technicalities in a work diary will be wondering how so much money is raised in a truck show. Well, allow me to elaborate. Whereas most truck shows are single-day fundraising events, the WA Mack Muster has taken a slightly different approach. The show itself, with the crowds, the judging and the variety of delicious food vans, takes place on Sunday. That is the last day of what is a three-day event. It begins on the Friday with a sponsor’s dinner and charity auction. Turns out if you flash around some media accreditation you can get yourself invited along among the transport celebrities. All be it, I had to help with the dishes at the end of the night, but for the steak they served, it was worth it.

The dinner includes several guest speakers including Professor Peter Leedman AO who enlightened us all to some amazing breakthroughs in the medical world. After another round of drinks, it was onto the charity auction, the big fundraising event of the weekend.

I will mention some of the other items on the list, like a seven-night Bali holiday, a Paccar factory tour with flights and accommodation, even a brand new NTS flattop trailer. However, the highlight item had to be the one-of-a-kind Mack-themed Softail Harley-Davidson, which went for over $80,000e in case you were wondering.

While Friday night was all about the dress pants and shirt sleeves, Saturday night was all about the cold beers and conversation. With a lot of trucks mustering in during the day and camping overnight for Sunday's show, the WA Mack Muster committee brought in food vans and chilly bins to cater for all the drivers on Saturday night. As you would expect it was a night of tall tales that went well into the early hours, ensuring there were a few sore heads as the West Australian sunrise broke, and the final cleaning clothes came out the next morning.

In terms of the truck show itself, everything lined up perfectly. The weather gods obviously took note of the committee's emails and turned on a spectacular day. Joe Public rolled in in their thousands to come and see some of the West's best-looking rigs

and most importantly I managed to find my new favourite food van, @Thelittlecorntruck. They specialise in fresh corn, flavoured corn and even popcorn. Trust me, it was legendary. I could pleat on for pages about this event, but I will try to limit myself so you can just enjoy the photos and start planning for 2026. Where the WA Mack Muster shines is in the catering stages. I don’t just mean the diversity of its food vans, I mean overall. There is a massive section for the kids, with all manner of souped-up sugar options, activities and interactive adventures. For the grown-ups, there are trucks from every era to appreciate.

The historic clubs have their own displays as well. There is representation from Main Roads WA on hand to talk to, there are new technology displays as well as state-of-the-art training displays. Road trip RECORD

The 2024 Crawlin’ the Hume event saw hundreds of truck enthusiasts from around Australia tackle one of the country’s more iconic east coast road trips

On a weekend where there was a massive downpour of rain across much of the country, the weather gods seemed to acknowledge the importance of this year’s Crawlin’ the Hume and kept the weather clear where it mattered most.

So it was that sunshine and a welcoming smile greeted truckies on Saturday April 6, as they rolle into the Ford administration car park in Campbellfield for the start of this year’s drive up the old Hume Highway.

Strapped into their rigs, with belly’s full of coffee and toasties, the drivers pointed north and hit the Hume Highway at 8.30am.

Organiser Robert French says that across the whole journey, there were around 500 trucks rolling up the highway.

“In the end there were just a lot of trucks,” he laughs.

“There were so many that a lot of them got blocked right back into Benalla.”

Proving to be a record-breaking year for the Crawlin’ team, French says the event went above all his expectations.

“We were amazed at how many trucks came and joined in along the way. It was perfect.”

Trucks newly 25 and older took to the tar, with a 1923 T Model Ford even pulling up the back of the convoy.

The trek down the Hume isn’t only for the drivers, with spectators bustling the whole

way to get a glimpse of the event.

From truck spotters to families and those alike, people couldn’t get enough of the sight.

“The highway was just lined with people all the way. We were amazed at how many people were out.”

The crew took a pitstop in Winton, taking a moment to stretch their legs and let in some late entries, with the rain testing the waters, dropping in and out.

“We thought we were going to be washed out but as soon as we pulled in it stopped.”

Luck continued to be on their side.

It was then onwards through Glenrowan, Wangaratta, Chiltern and Barnawartha, finally concluding in Albury.

While the event is all about fun and comradery, many of the drivers view it as a chance to relive the best days of the past.

“A lot of the old blokes used to drive the old Hume, and despite getting on and older now, they really loved it.

“Some of them are in their 80’s and they still manage to make it here.”

The younger generation have even started joining in, bringing their big rigs for the journey.

“Now they probably didn't run the old Hume as many of the others did, but if we don't have the young fellas coming along, we won't have anyone will we?” French chuckles.

French says it’s important to acknowledge the work of the team behind the event who went above and beyond.

“There was a group of people around me that did an amazing job. It took a lot of dedication and a lot of time.”

But French says all the e ort is worth it and the team is already gearing up to do it all again.

“On the way from Chiltern we stopped for a malted milk, and we started discussing 2026.”

Truckies banded together to raise nearly $25,000 for those in need

Truck and ute enthusiasts found a home over the rst weekend of April, congregating in Colac to show o their rigs and bond over a common love at the Colac Truck & Ute Show.

With over 120 trucks lining up for display, show organiser Daniel Williams says they couldn’t believe the support from their community.

“We had so many more trucks than we imagined. It was much better than last year.”

The rain managed to spare them the day, with 23-degree weather and a slight overcast providing the perfect lighting and backdrop for pictures.

With a diverse showing of rigs new and old, Williams says he couldn’t pick a favourite.

“I don't think there was any standout truck or one I could pinpoint,” he says.

“There were some pretty awesome trucks. From what I saw, they were all really shiny and nice-looking trucks.

In only its second year of running, the show saw truckies come from all over the country.

“One of our stallholders actually came down from Sydney. It was nice that they travelled that far for us.”

Raising money for the Volunteer Emergency Services of the Colac Community, Daniel says they smashed last year’s fundraising e orts.

“We haven't nalised our exact gure at this stage but it is estimated we have raised about $25,000.”

“It is up on what we made last year which is even better.”

Williams says events like these are integral to communities, providing support and comradery.

“The e ects of COVID meant events were few and far between for the community. It’s nice to get out and about to support our local volunteer emergency services.”

Local company Morris Transport swept the awards, taking six trophies home to display. Their stunning fleet took out best 5-10 years, People’s Choice, runner up Best Local, runner up Best European, runner up Best Highway and Best Fleet.

Peter Morris says it was great to receive such recognition in their hometown.

“It just made it even more special,” he says.

The team behind Morris Transport spent days preparing for the display.

“We started pulling the trucks off the road on Wednesday and had a lot of people polishing and doing everything to get them ready. There is a lot of preparation that goes behind it.”

If trucks weren’t your thing, the show introduced a tarping competition and tug of war battle that got everyone involved.

Jumping castles, face painting, mini train rides and mini golf kept the little ones occupied all day.

When Urana Vintage Machinery Club went looking for supporters for their 2024 Volvo-themed Vintage Rally & Truck Show it made perfect sense to talk to the team at Volwreck

Wander into the work shed at Volwreck HQ in Campbell eld, Victoria, just to the north of Melbourne’s CBD right now and you’ll spot a 1973 Volvo G88, or at least the shell of one.

The G88 is the latest restoration project for Volwreck’s Graeme Troutbeck.

It’s a work in progress – a passion project that Graeme is hoping to have in some sort of order for this year’s Urana Vintage Machinery Club’s Vintage Rally & Truck Show in October.

Given the work involved – time will tell whether the dream becomes reality.

Already the cab has been stripped down to its elements and the hard work of panel repair and replacement have begun.

Luckily for Graeme, he is surrounded by classic Volvo parts, and with more than three decades’ experience as a mechanic including the past 23 involved mainly with

Volvo product, he has a headstart when it comes to getting things right.

The F88 restoration will be the fourth for Graeme, following on from a 1972 F86, a 1989 FL10 and a 2010 FH16 XXL Globetrotter.

The bigger trucks were restored as business decision to help pick up wrecks from around the country, while the little F86 was one of those things that Graeme had always wanted to do.

It was the F86 and the other models of that era where Graeme honed his skills as an apprentice mechanic and began building his years of experience in troubleshooting and repairing all manner of Volvos.

“It gives you a good challenge when you are working on them, especially the air systems on the old models,” Graeme told Deals on Wheels’ correspondent Warren Aitken back in 2019, just as the F86 was

ready to roll out to the truck shows – five years after its restoration began.

The F86 was restored as closely as possible to the original truck, with one modern addition being that of a mobile phone charging port that was simply not a thing back in 1972, or it would surely have been included in the luxurious interior modelling Volvo’s are known for.

“It’s still got that comfort, you get thrown around a bit, but it’s still got that comfort,” reflected Graeme all those years ago.

The F86’s were first imported into Australia by Mayne Nickless. They were fitted with a TD70A engine and produced 185hp (138kW) tied to an eight-speed synchro gearbox.

Having put all the hard work into restoring the trucks, the Volwreck team enjoy sharing

the results with other historic truck lovers around the country, often loading bringing all three of their completed projects to historic truck shows around, with the Globetrotter taking on the role of truck carrier.

In October the Volwreck crew will head north to the country town of Urana in New South Wales where this year’s truck of choice for the Vintage Rally and Truck Show is Volvo.

The two-day event will feature a Vintage Tractor Trek, Twilight Tractor Pull, and a Show and Shine section on the Sunday that is sure to attract plenty of interest.

We share the story behind Scott McSweeney’s popular Peterbilt, Top Cat

If you’ve been to any truck shows in the past few years, you’ll probably have spotted Top Cat.

The 1967 Peterbilt is a favourite with veteran truckies and kids alike, and owner Scott McSweeney couldn’t be prouder of his eye-catching unit.

“It’s a unique truck,” he admits. “I like to stand out from the crowd!”

Sydney-based McSweeney is a busy man, running two businesses at once – transport company McSweeney Transport and trucking accessories retailer All-American Custom Chrome.

Despite this, he still found time to completely rebuild the old Peterbilt –although it did take him 15 years.

“I just wanted something di erent, so I started building Top Cat on the side as a bit of a hobby,” he says.

“I wanted this particular truck because it has a skinny nose – what they call a ‘needle nose’.

“We stripped it down to literally nothing, and built it back up.

“We made 80 per cent of the parts for it. You couldn’t buy the panels, so every panel on the cab is hand-made.”

When the truck was nally complete, McSweeney was reluctant to put it to the test.

“It took me three months to take it for a proper drive,” he says.

“Because I had hand-built it at home, I was scared it wasn’t going to be any good!”

Thankfully the Peterbilt drives like a dream, and she’s now a working truck –carting local and interstate loads during the week, and towing the All-American Custom Chrome trailer to truck shows at weekends.

The rig is particularly popular at shows, not just for its unique look, but because of the cartoon on the side which references the 1960s cartoon Top Cat.

“It’s got a V8 engine, it’s the biggest Caterpillar engine that you can put in a truck,” McSweeney explains.

“So I decided to call the truck Top Cat because it’s king of the Cats!

“A lot of kids nowadays don’t quite get what it is, because they haven’t seen the show.

“But their parents get it, and the kids still love seeing the cartoon on the side of the truck.”

McSweeney decided to carry the Top Cat theme across to some of his other trucks, naming them after two more characters from the program – Fancy Fancy and Benny the Ball.

“I have a purple Peterbilt that all the girls love, and I decided to call that one Fancy Fancy.

“If you’ve seen Top Cat, Fancy Fancy is a womaniser, so I thought that would suit!

“Then Benny the Ball is just for fun, that’s my little truck that does all the hard work.”

McSweeney’s feline machines aren’t the only stand-out rigs in his fleet - he also boasts a striking Kenworth T900, which he’s had for 27 years.

That was the first truck he imported from America and worked on himself.

“I got sick and tired of buying cheap sh*t, and I couldn’t afford to pay people to do trucks up,” he says.

“That truck is parked in the shed having a bit of a freshen up at the moment, but it’s still going good.”

The flame-adorned truck, which is nicknamed All Fired Up, bears a resemblance to Optimus Prime from the Transformers movie – but it’s purely a coincidence.

“I actually have a Harley-Davidson painted an identical colour,” he says.

“I just love flames, flames never die!

“But then everywhere I went kids were saying ‘That’s the Transformers Truck! It’s Optimus Prime!’

“I didn’t even know what Transformers was – I had to go hire the DVD to see what all the hype was about.”

McSweeney takes great pride in his two businesses, and having a stand-out fleet plays a big part in building brand awareness.

“People have got to see who you are, and remember you,” he says.

“I’ve always got to keep proving myself to my kids.

“The other day I deliberately took Benny the Ball to a show instead of Top Cat, and so many people were saying ‘Where’s Top Cat? Why didn’t you bring the other truck?’

“It’s proof that it has a following, which means I’ve achieved what I set out to do!”

There’s something about that rst drive in a truck that sticks with you forever

Everybody remembers the rst truck they ever drove, the smoothest drive they had, and the biggest rig they took to the road.

Memories like this tend to stick with us, reminding us of the good times past and provide exceptional anecdotes for roadhouse pitstops.

For Paul Fellows, there was one truck and person in particular that he could never seem to get out of his head.

Upon rst moving to Deniliquin, Paul decided to purchase some sheep for his new property.

Coming strapped in a 1984 K125 Cabover Kenworth driven by Alan Murphy of J Murphy & Sons, Paul says the truck caught his eye right away.

“It was just beautiful, an amazing truck,” Paul says.

“And Alan, who delivered the sheep, was just an absolute gentleman.

“I'd been working with trucks for a long time and I had never met anyone like him. He was such a gentleman and that resonated

with me.” Following the memorable exchange, Paul then found himself looking out for the truck, o en spotting it running around town.

“I got excited every time I saw it.”

Shortly a er the rst interaction, Paul and his transport company Fellows Transport began carting rice.

As if fate was on his side, Paul discovered Alan Murphy had recently sold his beloved truck to a rice farmer.

“This one time, the farmer asked if I would like to drive the truck into town for him,” Paul says.

“I’m a bit of a Kenworth tragic so I said of course.

“It was honestly one of the happiest days of my life, driving this great big Kenworth truck,” he chuckles.

Paul says despite his initial excitement, he quickly noticed something was not quite right with the seat.

“It had an Eldorado seat in it. As I’m driving it in, I noticed the seat kept de ating every

five or so minutes. I thought, well this is odd, but of course I left it.”

Around 30 odd years later, the truck was still occupying space in Paul’s head.

“About three years ago I saw the truck on Facebook for sale and I wanted it,” he says.

“I was going to make sure we got it.”

Paul ended up securing the truck from the farmer, ensuring he would restore it back to its original glory.

“Murphy's had been running I think for 100 years and they'd stopped trading, and Murph had gotten a bit old.

“I knew I wanted to tribute it to Murph. He was always such a stand-up guy.”

While holding his own memories with the truck dear to his heart, Paul soon realised the rig had impacted many locals’ lives.

“It's been a very special truck. There have been a lot of Deniliquin drivers that have learned to drive in that truck or have driven the truck over their career.

“One of the drivers we have now went for a drive with his father in that truck as a child,” he says.

“There’s a lot of people in town that really hold that truck close to their heart.

“It’s a part of Deniliquin and a part of the history.

Finally driving the truck after 30 years, Paul was surprised to see the seat was still deflating.

“I drove it out the gate and the bloody seat starts going down. 30 years it’s been going down!” he says.

The O-ring in the seat had come off and left a tiny hole, thankfully he was able to fix it in a matter of minutes.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” he laughs.

As soon as the truck graced the Fellows Transport shed, Paul says he went to town on the restoration.

Despite its age, the Kenworth was in pretty good shape mechanically.

“I did the locker boxes, put a new floor in it and got a new engine cover.”

While getting the local upholsterer to take a peep, they pointed out some similarities between his new rig and some classic Aussie muscle.

“He said the vinyl was a Kingswood

As the truck is a tribute to Alan Murphy and his family, Paul ensured the rig was restored as closely as possible to the original, including the signage

brown. That's the same vinyl they put in all the Kingswood cars.”

“Even the lights in the locker boxes were the same ones used in an XD Falcon boot. It was just so interesting.

“There's all these commonalities and all these parts with the automotive industry in Australia.”

With most of the work done, Paul then got to beautifying the rig.

“I did the interior, even leaving the original door panels.”

“I sandblasted the chassis and painted it. I also painted the engine and radiator by myself.

Paul then sent his new pride and joy off to Shepparton for a visit to Joe at Cundari Bros for some cab replacement panels and a new coat of paint.

“He did the most magnificent job.”

“We got our signwriting done by hand and not stickers. We wanted it done in the old style and as original as possible.”

Paying tribute, the truck reads J Murphy & Sons.

For the finishing touches, Paul put some quarter guards on the truck and made new hockey steps to access the cab.

“A lot of the chrome work was redone and then that was what we ended up with.”

With an impact on the whole community, the rig needed a big debut, choosing the Deniliquin Truck Show as the place to show off.

“When Murphy’s son saw it for the first time, he got a little bit emotional because that’s the truck he learnt to drive in.

“It’s just a part of the town now.”

Paul says the truck is now part of the family, sitting peacefully at his shed at home.

“We have offered it to the local depot where it may go into rotation. There are some people in Shepparton who would like to display it too.”

“I am just happy we got it done and people get to be excited about seeing it again.”

The future is looking bright for teen truckie Rodic Schubert, who is proud to drive his grandad’s Hino

People might like to think that all teenagers care about these days is TikTok and Fortnite –but 18-year-old Rodic Schubert is as hardworking as they come.

The young truckie works full-time for Haywood’s Bulk Transport in South Kempsey, when he’s not helping out on his family’s farms in Gladstone and Belmore River.

His dad ran his own transport company until a few years ago, while his grandad had his own earthmoving business – so Schubert’s interest in rigs was planted at a young age.

“Watching everything Pop did, observing and picking things up.”

Schubert le school at the age of 16, and hasn’t looked back since.

“I wasn’t really learning anything in school,” he says.

“I knew I would be better in a yard, where I know what I’m doing.”

He loves his job with Haywood’s, where he does a mix of yard maintenance, truck washing and deliveries.

“They’ve been such an amazing company to work for,” he says.

“The second I was able to walk and talk I was out there with the trucks!” he tells Deals on Wheels.

“All the workers are happy, and my bosses Darlene and David are fantastic.

“We’re all related – Darene is my mum’s cousin – and it’s great to work with family.”

Although Schubert is too young to get his truck licence, he can drive a small rig for Haywood’s on a car licence, as well as his grandad’s 2021 617 Hino.

His pop bought the Japanese unit for farm jobs and moving cattle, not wanting to put too much work into doing it up as he knew it was going to get pretty dirty.

But Schubert said “yeah, nah” and ordered a bunch of stainless, mud ap weights, tank grout and antennas.

“I wanted to make it something di erent for a little truck!” he says.

“Anything that Pop owns, I want it to look presentable.

“I’m always doing little bits to the truck, washing it and polishing it.

“I want to catch someone’s eye, as well as just being able to look at something we own and feel proud of it.”

Schubert brought the Hino to the Casino Truck Show in 2022 and 2023, coming home with an award for Best Japanese last year.

“I went to the show on my Ls in 2022 and didn’t win anything but I couldn’t wait to go back,” he says.

“There were lots of great Japanese trucks there last year so I didn’t think I would win.

“When I did, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. I was over the moon.”

The teenager says that although Japanese trucks are very popular sales-wise, those who drive them can cop a bit of flak from other truckies.

“Everyone looks at a little truck and says ‘There’s a wannabe truck driver.'

“I think it’s very unfair, because they are great trucks!”

In the future, Schubert says he would like to be an owner-driver, but for the time being he’s very happy with Haywood’s.

“I would tell any young person who would like to work in the transport industry to do what I did,” he adds.

“Start from the bottom, and work your way up.”

Ted Beamish tells us about his 48-year-old Kenworth SAR that's still going strong

Trucking companies have a tendency to buy and sell trucks pretty regularly, but Beamish Heavy Haulage has held on to its “old faithful” Kenworth SAR ever since it was purchased brand new in 1976.

The company’s owner and director, Ted Beamish, tells Deals on Wheels that at the time, the truck was the most powerful in their eet.

“It was picked up for big oat work, which no-one did back then,” he says.

“If people wanted a truck for heavy haulage work, they would normally buy a worn-out, second-hand interstate truck and put it to use.

“We bought a brand new one because the

demand was there from our customers to get the job done quick and easy.”

Beamish says that a er the truck was specced up heavy duty, it was twice as fast as previous trucks they had used.

“I was down to 20km/h in the old truck, going up hills with a heavy load, whereas this one could do it at 40km/h.”

The rig came with a 8v92T 430 horsepower engine, which has since been replaced by a 8v92T 520 horsepower one.

It also went from a 15-speed to an 18-speed double overdrive cog box.

Like most older trucks, it’s needed a fair amount of maintenance and repairs over the years, but it’s still in great shape.

“It’s a spare truck at the moment because we can’t get labour or drivers,” he says.

“I’ve got a newer Kenworth, a T659, and it’s got another hundred horsepower on it compared to the SAR, which makes life easier.

“The old girl might not have as many creature comforts, but she still performs well – even with 1.5 million kilometres on the clock.”

Ted’s dad William way back in 1942. Ted followed his dad into the business at the age of 16 – and now in his 70s, he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

“Retire? You don’t retire!” he says.

“It’s what I know. Every day is different.”

Based in Melbourne, Beamish Heavy Haulage specialises in oversized, awkward and odd loads for the mining, industrial, manufacturing and building industries.

Steven Della Bona has always had a soft spot for Bulldogs.

His dad Michael founded WA Limestone with his brother Renzo and their brother-inlaw Peter Zamboni back in 1973, and Mack trucks have played a big part in their family’s story.

“We ran Macks back in the '80s and '90s,”

“There was something special about that era, when Macks had the V8 engines.”

Fast-forward to 2024, and WA Limestone has grown to become one of the biggest suppliers of road construction materials

in Western Australia, with Steven and his cousin/business partner David Della Bona at the helm.

They have over 50 trucks in their fleet, and despite Steven lamenting the loss of the V8 engine, many of their rigs are brand-new Macks.

To indulge their passion for “real trucks”, as Steven calls them, the cousins have also built up a collection of older Bulldogs, including a classic Valueliner, a Superliner Series 2, a couple of B61s, and a Mack Titan.

The Mack Titan, which is a fully restored 1997 model, is one of Steven’s favourites.

He purchased it in a bid to replicate a truck that WA Limestone had in the '90s.

“I tried to track down the original truck that we had, but I couldn’t nd it,” he says.

“So I bought this one, which was very similar to it, o a bloke in Adelaide during Covid times.”

Steven rebuilt parts of the interior and exterior of the truck, painting it to replicate the old WA Limestone colours.

“We put new brakes on it, rebuilt the suspension, rebuilt the front axle, put a new exhaust on it, gutted and rebuilt all the interior, and did some work to the engine,” he says.

“We put a new bullbar on it, a new grill, new tyres, rims, guards, toolboxes...We cleaned it all up.”

He keeps the truck as clean as possible, and only he and his cousin are allowed to drive it.

“It’s not a truck that goes to work every day,” he says. “We keep it immaculate.”

Steven’s love for restoring Bulldogs led to him meet fellow Mack fanatic CTS Low Loaders Director Jason Clatworthy – and the two men went on to set up the WA Mack Muster and Truck Show.

“I was in the process of restoring my Valueliner, and Jason had a truck that I went to go look at, to do a bit of a comparison,” Steve says.

“We were brought together by having a common interest, so we came up with the idea of getting some other Mack enthusiasts together and having a beer on a Saturday a ernoon.

“We formed a committee and got a few people involved, like Matt Lawrence from bp – I knew him because I bought my fuel o him.”

Mack Muster and Truck Show in 2020, and it’s taken place biannually since then.

It’s grown massively since it started with just 120 trucks that first year, registering 360 rigs at the 2024 show.

“It’s a three-day event – on the Friday night we have an auction, the Saturday night is a drivers’ night and then on the Sunday we open it up to the public,” Steven says.

“We like to showcase our industry and what we do.

"It’s picking up a lot of momentum, and personally I think it’s Australia’s best truck show.”

The show raises money for the Harry Perkins Institute for Medical Research, a cause close to Steven’s heart.

“Cancer got my father last year, and that’s part of the reason I started this journey,” he says.

“I had been involved with different bike rides and that kind of thing, over the years, to fundraise for cancer research.

“So I said I would do my own show and try to raise $20,000 in donations.”

The first year of the Mack Muster raised $100,000 for the Perkins Institute, and the second year raised $250,000.

“I can’t yet confirm the final numbers for this year’s show – but we were really happy with what was raised,” Steven continues.

“The trucking industry has a lot of good people who are happy to donate to the cause, and hopefully we can help to one day find a cure for cancer.”

Safe, drug-free driving is everyone’s business

We all want a road transport industry where the families of drivers can be con dent that their loved ones will make it home at the end of their working day.

This point was well made by NSW Upper House independent Parliamentarian Rod Roberts on May 3 when he told 2GB radio host Ray Hadley that it was a “crisis”.

Driving can be a risky business, and one in which your chances of avoiding injury or death o en come down to the behaviour of others, who may be under the in uence of alcohol or drugs.

Social standards regarding the acceptability of driving under the in uence of alcohol have changed signi cantly over the past decades, and yet, when it comes to drug driving, we are still catching up.

Take for example, new gures from police road enforcement activities over the 2024 easter holiday.

New South Wales Police reported conducting 232,092 random breath tests over this period, with 295 positive results.

That means that one-in-850 people in control of a vehicle were found to be driving with more than the legal level of alcohol in their blood.

Contrast that with the results of 17,256 drug tests being conducted in that state over the same period, which returned 863 positive tests.

That’s a ratio of one-in-20 road-users being on drugs. These gures should concern anybody who operates a trucking business or makes a living behind the wheel of a heavy vehicle.

We seem to have a bigger problem with drug use by all road-users than we may have previously thought. The impact on our sector is obvious and can be tragic.

Mr Roberts – a former police o cer - said that while we can’t ease up on making drunk-driving socially unacceptable, nobody seems to be talking about drug impairment.

Data from the Australia Institute of Health and Welfare shows us that in 2023, 44 per cent of regular drug users participating in a drug and alcohol related reporting system (EDRS) drove a vehicle within three hours of taking drugs.

Let’s not pretend our industry doesn’t have its own issues. Yet, the vast majority of our sector are doing the right thing on our roads and deserve to feel safe behind the wheel.

And rather than simply laying the blame for drug driving at the feet of our industry, it’s clear that more must be done to stop drug driving across the community.

At NatRoad, we’d like to see greater public awareness, including government driven campaigns, to begin to change society’s attitude towards drug driving, whether its illicit substances or everyday prescription medicine.

We hope, through these measures, alongside increased drug testing and sensible policy development, we can work towards bringing drug driving under control and make our roads safe for all.

Most 11-year-olds save up for toys, but Leon Carter saved up for a truck

Children’s goals usually involve purchasing a video game, stu ed toy or snack; undoubtedly juvenile.

It’s not o en you come across a child with clear cut dreams and a plan of action.

However, a er meeting 11-year-old Leon Carter, it’s clear that there are exceptions.

Attending truck shows with his father Les for years, it was at the age of four and a half that Leon declared his goal in life.

To buy a truck.

It was made clear early on however, that any regular truck would not su ce for the ambitious youngster.

“When he rst asked if we could buy a truck and x it up, I told him we probably could, but he would have to nd one he likes rst,” Les says.

Wandering around the truck show, Leon’s eyes quickly set upon an old R-Series Oshkosh.

Slowly growing his stash, Leon was so xated on the goal that he would turn down other toys and experiences to save.

“I would joke around with him a lot. If he wanted some Lego or something I would tell him it would have to come out of his bank,” Les says.

“Immediately he would say, I can’t spend that it’s Oshkosh money.”

The fascination with the American brand only grew stronger, his bedroom slowly turning into an Oshkosh Museum.

“I’ve got an Oshkosh hat, shirt, bedspread, posters,” Leon says.

“Everything is Oshkosh.”

A er recycling for a period, Leon realised he would need to up his game plan if he was going to get the money as soon as possible.

Luckily for him, a family friend gave him a box trailer to x up and sell for pro t.

Leon saved over $8,000 for the truck

“It was love at rst sight,” Les says. “He told me that was the one he wanted.”

Quick to action, Les informed his son that he would have to start earning and saving his money if he wanted to buy one.

“He knew from a young age that you have to work before you get any money and if you sit on your ass and do nothing, you'll get nothing.”

"Honestly I thought he would just get over it, and we would probably revisit this when he's 14 or 15 or something.”

“But he was just so persistent.”

Leon immediately started collecting cans and bottles, recycling them at a Return & Earn.

“Then that started a long line of box trailers that we would x up together and sell,” Les says.

“Honestly he started making quite a lot of money.”

Leon says he enjoys xing up the trailers with his dad, “it’s not hard, but it’s fun”.

When Les had slowed down helping Leon with the trailers, focusing a bit more attention on xing them up to build up his daughter’s moneybox, Leon was le in a predicament.

“I told him he would have to work something out for himself to get more money.”

Leon took to following in his father’s footsteps and cutting firewood.

“He said it's not happening fast enough, that he needed to make more money,” Les says.

“We've got a wood paddock with good wood in it, and off he went.”

Over time, Leon had built himself a nice little nest egg to play with, now eagerly waiting for an Oshkosh to appear for sale.

“I was just scrolling on Facebook one day when I saw a 1975 Oshkosh E-Series show up in an auction, and those ones are pretty rare,” Les says.

Upon showing Leon the listing, he immediately declared that was the one he wanted.

“Can I buy it, can I buy it, I’ve got the money!” Leon shouted.

Following some extensive homework, phone calls and pricing for Caterpillar 1674 rebuild kits, Les gave in to the ambitious boy.

Winning the auction, Les looked at his son and says, “you better go and tell your mother you own an Oshkosh.”

Forking over $4,500 for the rig and another $3,500 for transport, Leon was now the only 11-year-old with his very own Oshkosh.

Waking up at 3am that Saturday, the duo and a mate set off to collect the truck from Max Graham.

“Max was actually the original owner. He told us a story about how this truck and the one at the Heritage Truck Museum in Alice Springs are sisters,” Les says.

“He said they should have consecutive numbers. They were both paid for on the same day and picked up on the same day.”

Buzzing on their newfound information, Max sweetened the deal by locating a spare cab and a spare engine that they were free to take home.

Leon is convinced the restoration will take one dedicated weekend.

Les, the realist, understands the restoration will take closer to two years to get the whole thing done.

“The goal now is to at least get it running for the Heritage Truck Association truck show in Beaudesert in October.”

“Leon is determined and told me he will pay for a float if he has to.”

Les says he is incredibly proud of all that his son has achieved and commends him for working so hard for it.

“I, of course, helped him fix up the trailers, but I never put a single cent towards the truck. That was all him.”

“People have always underestimated Leon, teachers at school laughed at his goal and he has struggled a bit. But he continues proving to them that he can do anything he puts his mind too.”

“I couldn’t have done this in my mid 20’s, and he is out here smashing goals at 11.”

The story isn’t over for Leon, with the goal of restoring the Oshkosh and purchasing a new wood truck at the forefront of his mind.

When South Australia’s Casuarina Jayne (CJ) took up truck driving for a living, she never expected to have thousands of social media fans around the world joining her on the trip

For many rst-time truckies, its normal to have some form of mentor to look up to.

A family member, friend, or boss who can walk you through the many aspects of the job and provide advice.

Nowadays however, sometimes the best mentors are the ones you nd online.

Casuarina Jayne (CJ) is a South Australian truckie now working out at the gold elds near Perth.

When starting out in her new job, CJ says that she was o en asking questions that made her look ‘really dumb’.

“A lot of people get really embarrassed asking questions when you start out,” she says.

“But the truth is, you don’t know what you don’t know. You have to learn everything on the job.”

Sensing that this was a problem faced by

many new truckies, CJ decided that she could be someone for people to come too.

“There were no mentors online that I could look up to, there was no one that I would go to that looked like me that I could ask questions too,” she says.

“I was like, I'm learning all of this information, and I want to share this with other people, so they don't have to feel stupid on the job.”

CJ went to her HR department and told them she was going to create an account that showcases the realities of life on the road.

“As I learn a new skill, I'll post it and share it,” she says. “I’ll show what it’s really like behind the wheel of a truck.”

“I just really want to learn from all those around me and help share all that knowledge with others.”

And boy did she post.

Truck drivers and enthusiasts from all over the world have been tuning in, watching her showcase her skills and curiosity.

“I love the fact that I'm building a community and bringing people together. It's global now.”

She has even taken it upon herself to highlight other truck drivers, ensuring recognition is shared.

“On my Instagram stories I now showcase my followers, where they are from and what they drive.”

“I've had people from like, everywhere, like Egypt, like all through Europe, South Africa, South America, America, Canada, everywhere.”

Despite her undeniable success, CJ wasn’t always set on truck driving.

Growing up on a cherry orchard, CJ’s father went full-time truck driving when she was in year 11-12.

“I was always around it, but honestly I just didn't think that that would be a job for me, and I didn't think I'd be able to do it.”

Upon graduating high school she worked

in a motorbike store, with dreams of racing motocross.

“I did that for a couple years, then found myself as an insurance broker.”

She travelled around Adelaide, Darwin and Brisbane doing insurance before her sister encouraged her to try her hand at the wheel.

“She knew I would be so much happier doing that, and I would make more money.”

She started her journey driving concrete trucks, then truck and dog tippers, then fuel, working herself up the ladder.

Now driving road trains for Merkanooka Haulage, CJ says she couldn’t be happier.

“You’ve got to do the progression. I think people look at those who drive road trains and don't realise that it's taken me 10 years to get here.”

CJ’s father, despite being a truckie himself, wasn’t too keen at the idea of her buckling up in the rigs.

“My dad had so many concerns and fears, and he still does,” she says.

“Being a woman in the industry can be tough, with all the sexism and issues with toilets and access.”

“I've actually had opportunities taken away from me because of other people's

fears on my behalf.”

“They worried for me being like, oh, well, you won't be able to change a tyre or you won't be able to do this, but over the years I have proven that I can.

Inundated with comments saying she only got her job because of her dad, CJ says it’s important people stop with that narrative for women.

“People need to quit the attitude of girls getting to where they are because of their dads. They have found success through their own hard work.”

One of the main goals for CJ is to inspire and encourage younger people to get involved in the transport industry.

“We just really need more young people coming in industry. A lot of them are scared or don’t know what to do.”

“That’s why I do this, to inspire people who look like me to get behind the wheel.”

She says she would love to start attending career days at schools and take on more public speaking roles to get the ball rolling.

“I'd like to see some kind of apprenticeship programme to help young people straight out of school, get into transport industry so that they can get some experience.

Tamworth, NSW has historically lacked a major truck show scene, with one local business deciding it’s time to switch it up for the trucking enthusiasts.

JT Fossey Trucks spearheaded a brand-new truck show at the start of April, celebrating all things Mack and Volvo.

The dealership recognised the importance and fun of showing o your rigs, inviting their customers and community members to the display.

Organiser Steve Bargwanna says they were excited to provide this to their community.

“We wanted to give our customers the opportunity to showcase their trucks and get them involved.

As with most shows, the judging portion was erce and competitive, highlighting some of the best rigs Tamworth has to o er.

Local fuel company Transwest Fuels took home the trophy for Best Volvo post-2000 with their 2023 Volvo FH.

Betts Rogers Transport managed to sweep up Best Mack post 2000 with their stunning 2019 Mack Super-Liner.

Gavin Sutton Transport and Turtle Couriers took home the last remaining two categories, Mack and Volvo pre-2000.

“Obviously the winners were the standout trucks of the show, but all of the others were still amazing,” he says.

The dealership wanted to give customers the opportunity to showcase their trucks and get them involved

“We encouraged people to bring down working trucks as well as pretty ones, showing o Mack and Volvo from where they started to where they are today.

“It was really a display of the progression of those two brands.”

Welcoming 60 trucks to their yard, Steve says the team was excited to see people support the event.

“Tamworth doesn’t have many shows, so it was great to be able to o er one to the community,” he says.

“The event went really well.”

Over 300 members of the public came to peek at the rigs and enjoy the BBQ organised by the Tamworth Truck Drivers Club.

“We had some trucks coming from near and far that were outstanding. You could tell a lot of time and e ort had been put into the restored trucks as well.

Moving forward, Steve says they are already looking forward to 2025 and making it bigger and better.

“We de nitely want to have more categories for judging next year,” he says.

“Postcode trucks, tippers, Titans, di erent models. We want more categories for sure.”

Steve says the possibility is there to expand the event into a family event.

“We still need to have a debrief of the event and sort out our plans but turning it into a family event would be the way of the future.”

The dealership hopes to continue to grow the event, aiming to hit 100 trucks in attendance in 2025.

Ever wondered what happens when a re truck puts out its last re?

Fire engines and trucks are the usually the rst vehicle that a young kid would get obsessed with.

And I mean who wouldn’t? With the ashy red paint job, blaring sirens, ladders, and a super-powered hose. I can see the appeal.

The thing with re trucks, however, is that they aren’t the most multi-purpose of vehicles.

Mainly for saving lives and property, the question of what to do with them a er they no longer t the requirements is asked by many.

Getting into contact with NSW Fire and Rescue, they say when trucks reach retirement age, they are sent o to auction houses like Manheim.

Manheim head of council and government Ste an Lancaster says they receive re appliances from all the di erent emergency services.

“Manheim sell approximately 80-100 re appliances a year,” he says.

“Remembering that the average age of the used appliance is 32-35 years old, due to the high replacement costs involved and the low utilisation usage.

“Clearly they are well maintained and serviced due to the nature of work they are required to perform.”

When asked who they are sold to, Lancaster says they fall into three categories.

“Most are sold to very large remote agricultural property owners, or a group of property owners,” he says.

“Some are sold into mine site operations, and a small number are being sold to adventure junkies (or grey nomads) turning them into campers.”

Warren Holland purchased an ex-CFA Hino at Ritchies Bros 10 years ago, needing the rig for his property.

“They had been given a whole lot that still had petrol engine re pumps because everyone was switching to diesel re pumps,” Warren says.

Running a farm, Warren says the warmer months can prove to be incredibly unpredictable with res.

“In order to stay safe, it’s better to have your own person re- ghting system.”

“We needed to upgrade our previous re unit, and this one worked well.”

In his own experience, Warren says it’s quite common to see farms utilising them for their intended purpose.

“You don't see too many these days used for other things.”

“A long time ago, there was a bore drilling contractor had ve or six old ones that he was using for his own trucks.

“Apart from that, I've only ever seen them on farms as private re units.”

Despite the majority, Deals on Wheels has managed to track down some of the more interesting uses for the retired trucks.

Dave Donegan from Mint Pig Racing converted an old American re truck for hauling his racing business around.

Undergoing a major restoration, Donegan says he couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

“We have people stopping us in the middle of the street,” he says.

“Obviously re trucks are big in America and our one is a bit di erent so people get very excited about it.”

Touring jobs are deceptively unique when compared to many others within the transport industry. Particularly gigs that go Australia-wide.

Typical interstate freight driving isn’t even quite the same, says truckie Shane Kent, who recently returned from driving for the hugely successful Pink tour.

The rock star’s Summer Carnival tour took Australia by storm, with shows across ve states and major stadiums including Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Optus Stadium in Perth and Accor Stadium in Sydney.

With that many shows comes a need for drivers who can move equipment from place to place, and 63-year-old Kent and his borrowed Western Star 4800 were one of a eet of 44 trucks.

While he currently works in the family business, a Sydney-based company which does truck smash repairs and sells truck parts, he jumped at the chance to do something di erent.

Kent has driven for tours before, including big names such as AC/DC and Adele, and says the mindset is considerably di erent to what is required for other kinds of interstate driving.

“I’ve done the concert stu for a couple of years, around 2015-17,” he explains.

“A mate of mine got all the transport organised for the Pink tour, all 44 trucks. He rang and asked me to get a hold of a prime mover. And I thought, ‘you know what, I’d love to do it’.

“I asked my brother if I could borrow our prime mover.

“While I’ve done it before, there’s a saying in the touring side of transport, ‘you hurry up and wait’. With general freight, you have a load that’s due in a couple of days.

“This is a big tour, you can get bigger tours in the amount of trucks, but seven weeks all over Australia, that’s pretty big.

“When you go into stadiums the 44 trucks don’t pull up out the front and whoever’s

there first gets unloaded. It’s got to be precise.

“Because I’ve done the touring before, I know what it’s about. I told myself I’d commit to it, I’m in. Mentally, I said to myself ‘you’ve just got to get in that space before you go’.

“You’re going to be waiting around a lot. Just make sure you do it and you do it right. All the mucking around is part of the job.”

The Pink tour was unique as far as concert driving goes, from a freight perspective, Kent says.

Across his more than four decade-long transport career, touring is a fairly new addition to the CV, first taking up work with Australian Touring Services across 2014 and 2015.

The logistics of travelling from city to city across the seven weeks, including loading and unloading, is one of the more daunting parts of the whole process.

“We had the easy side of it just doing the transport,” Kent laughs.

And while it wasn’t quite the chaos that was the 78 trucks required for AC/DC in 2015, there were plenty of situations that had to be taken into consideration.

Drivers were required to drive two-up from Adelaide to Perth and Brisbane to Townsville, the longest journeys of the trip, while the last truck to leave Adelaide pulled a dolly behind its trailer in case of break downs.

“A lot of the artists that come into Australia rent a lot of gear when they’re doing world tours,” Kent explains.

“But Pink owns every bit of her gear. She shipped 60 40-foot containers from America to Sydney, and when we left Townsville 44 trucks unloaded at the Port of Brisbane.

“She went home to America, and the containers all went over to England. Apparently she was gone for nine months all together.”

experience to be a part of, the time spent on the road was a good reminder of how gruelling some long journeys can be.

“I don’t know whether I’d do a seven-week tour again. It’s a lot, but I do enjoy the touring side of transport,” Kent says.

“You’re not doing the miles, but when you’re loaded out you can’t take your time in case you break down or you’ll ruin the whole tour.

“You might get out of Melbourne at midnight or 1am to get to Sydney for the next gig, but then you’ll be in Sydney for two days doing nothing. It’s the same thing.

“A lot of people can’t do the concert stu because it messes with their head too much.

“They’re used to there being 20 pallets, get it to Brisbane tomorrow or the next day. If they breakdown, they wait to get it xed.

“With a tour, it’s so coordinated with everything it could muck the whole tour up.”

Touring the world

Kent’s own touring career, in transport, has taken him on and o the road for various

reasons across its nearly 44 years since he started driving with his father from Sydney to Melbourne at 19.

He went from driving the interstate route up and down the Hume, to driving across North America helping out the family truck parts business when it expanded to Canada.

While he’s spent plenty of time on the business side of things, Kent has always ended up back on the road again.

Given that he’s been largely running the business for the most part since 2019, he said it took a while to adjust again to the touring life.

“We call it being ‘trip t’,” Kent laughs.

“It’d be like a guy playing rugby and giving it up for three months and then going back in. You pick it up because you’ve been doing it for years.

“The rst leg on the Pink tour was Sydney to Newcastle, and I was absolutely knackered. It was 170km!

“A lot of people don’t realise unless they drive. You chase that white line for hours. It’s a balance. It’s not just experience.

“You don’t automatically pull over the second you get tired, or you’d be doing it every 10 minutes. It’s getting back to that mental state of driving.

“By the time I got back, I could have jumped back in the truck and gone straight to Perth.”

Another positive to come out of the tour for Kent was a rekindling of love, for not only getting behind the wheel of a truck, but the transport industry as a whole.

Kent says he’d become a bit jaded to the industry, but working alongside his fellow drivers again made that appreciation come back.

“To look back on it, even though I’ve done touring before it was amazing to get back out

there again and really admire the guys that still do it day after day,” he says.

“The guys that are older than me are still out there doing it. I also met a lot of good, young drivers on this tour, and they were fantastic operators.

“Most of the time I travelled by myself, but you might go past the parking bay or truck stop and you see six or seven trucks in there. Some guys would travel together.

“It helped me realise that our industry as a whole still has a lot of good guys that are totally professional operators.

“They’ve improved the truck, improved the roads, but it doesn’t matter – it’s still 880km from Sydney to Melbourne.”

Weld Australia has launched two free online welder safety training courses

With welding being a potentially dangerous process with di erent hazards depending on the welding location, Weld Australia has developed two free online welder safety training courses.

The courses cover a broad range of subject material across welding processes. They provide details of hazards that may be encountered and how to manage them in the workplace. The hierarchy of controls is discussed, with a particular focus on engineering controls and the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

The courses also reinforce procedures that should be used, such as creating the correct set up and use of equipment and the correct handling of gas cylinders and welding machines. Assessment and certi cation for course participants is also available.

“The courses can be used by companies to enhance their sta induction program to ensure all employees start with a solid foundation in safety practices,” Weld Australia CEO Geo Crittenden says.

Interact Analysis’ global forkli market analysis shows strong growth

Chinese forkli manufacturers are taking a higher share of the market in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) - at nearly 15 per cent in 2022, compared to about 8 per cent in 2020.

China saw a YoY increase in January 2024 of 90.4 per cent while the North American region experienced a historical peak in sales in 2023, particularly for counterbalance trucks. However, geopolitical instability and previous high growth saw the market decline in 2023 in EMEA.

Looking at the main global forkli manufacturers, Toyota’s growth rate in North America saw a 2.6 per cent increase in shipments in 2023 and a 28.6 per cent increase in sales.

Jungheinrich has not yet released an annual report but mentioned in its third quarter report that orders have decreased, likely due to uctuations in the European market.

Kion also saw a decline in orders for Europe and the United States in 2023, but an increase of 63 per cent YoY in APAC.

Hyster-Yale’s forkli revenue increased by approximately 5 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to 2022, with a shi seen towards higher priced and larger capacity forkli s.
