ITS America 2021 Day 3

“CREATE A CULTURE WITH NO FEAR OF FAILURE!”

ITS professionals have to embrace the possibility of failing if they want to innovate. That was the stirring message from Carlos Braceras, executive director of Utah Department of Transportation. Speaking at the ITS America Annual Meeting 2021 at a session about the Infrastructure and Jobs Act, he said:

“When you're innovative, the risk that we all have is that you make a mistake and fail. And so it's really important that you be willing - as a leader in an organisation - to create the framework to be able to allow your people to try new things, and to make mistakes.”

Braceras, who was inducted into the 2022 ITS Hall of Fame this week, recalled that early in his career he answered a question in an interview in a similar vein:

“I'm astounded that I still have a job, but this was over 35 years ago when I was early in my career, and I was asked, ‘What is your best skill?’ And without even thinking, I said: ‘Well, I can make more mistakes faster than anyone else –but I won't make the same mistake twice’ . And so it's really important in the public sector that you create an environment of trust for your employees and your private sector partners, to be able to try new things.”

Annual Meeting, IRD is introducing new products and systems from recently acquired subsidiaries including Icoms Detections, whose microwavebased detection systems are used for traffic management, enforcement and vulnerable road user protection; Sensor Line, a specialist in fibre optic-based technology for tolling classification and cyclist detection; and VDS, developer and supplier of radar-based

products for red-light and speed enforcement.

IRD is also featuring the Tire Anomaly Classification System (TACS). TACS screens commercial vehicles and identifies tyres that are dangerous, such as flat tyres, or underinflated tyres that may pose a safety risk or affect fuel efficiency. Available as a standalone system or integrated with weigh station software, TACS has been adopted by a

LESS TIME IN TRAFFIC WITH NOTRAFFIC SENSORS

Don’t delay; visit the booth of NoTraffic to see the company’s edge-based autonomous traffic management platform that is reducing traffic delays in the US. It calculates optimal traffic signal timing and phase progression in real time.

The system’s plug-and-play AI sensors are installed at each intersection approach to provide road user detection and classification via a fusion of machine vision and radar.

Users are classified as bikes, pedestrians, trucks, buses and more. Anonymised processed data is streamed to the cloud for city-grid coordination. Connected vehicle capabilities are integrated directly into the sensor units.

Meanwhile, the AI optimisation engine, installed in the traffic light cabinet, aggregates sensor data from each approach, calculates optimisation variables and

large number of commercial vehicle enforcement agencies over the past few years and has also been trialled in driver information systems.

All these new technologies are available as simple modular solutions that enable a sustainable route to improve transportation safety and efficiency.

TransCore ploughs ahead this winter

There’s no business like snow business if traffic controllers have to move mountains of the white stuff to keep roads clear in winter. The citizens of Denver, Colorado, know this all too well.

But TransCore is coming to their rescue, thanks to a contract just signed with Colorado DoT to implement signal priority for snowploughs. Signal prioritisation for pedestrians, buses and emergency vehicles is common. But the pilot project, which starts in March in District One in metropolitan Denver, is the first of its kind, said Michael Mauritz, senior vice-president of ITS solutions at

TransCore. If successful it could be rolled out to other municipalities in the state.

For the past three to five years, Denver, like New York, San Jose and Montreal, has already been using TransCore’s TransSuite traffic management software for real-time analysis and change signal patterns at the touch of a button. The beauty of the Denver deal is there is no major up-front cost for expensive new hardware. Instead, the project uses exiting equipment. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Dura-Line smooths the way

Dura-Line Corporation has made available a portfolio of communications conduits lined with its new, proprietary Silicore ULF (ultra-low friction) material.

“Testing and field trials have been extremely encouraging, with an increase of up to 25% when jetting fibre optic cable,” said product manager Richard Hicks. The product provides 40% lower coefficient of friction than the previous Silicore lining, he adds, meaning that “installations go quicker, saving companies and municipalities a lot of time and money”.

Founded in 1971 in Middlesboro, KY, Dura-Line was the first to develop conduit for the telecoms industry, says Tim Grimsley, vice president of global customer engagement. “We were the first to manufacture duct with pre-installed pull lines or power/fibre cables. We were the first to integrate longitudinally-ribbed lining into our duct, and so much more. These are commonplace in our industry now thanks to Dura-Line’s pioneering spirit.”

Axis takes SoC to the edge

Axis is announcing the 8th generation of its custom-designed system-on-chip (SoC) made for network video, here at the ITS America Annual Meeting. By taking edge compute to an even higher level, ARTPEC-8 supports powerful analytics applications based on deep learning on the edge, where cameras have the processing power to analyse data within the camera itself.

An example of deeplearning-based analytics is highly granular real-time object detection and classification that makes it possible to develop analytics that can distinguish between different kinds of objects, such as types of vehicles or pedestrians.

Analysing data on the edge – on the camera – means no information is lost in compression or transmission, making results more reliable. It allows for faster alerts, which in turn lets users act instantly to protect people and property and make the right decisions about their operations. It creates cost savings because less bandwidth

and storage and fewer servers are needed.

Less bandwidth and storage also significantly reduce the risk of loss of sensitive data and fewer servers improves scalability. It also opens the door to other deep-learning-based analytics that deliver actionable insights for security, safety and

operational purposes. With the camera’s open platform, coupled with the expanded GPU performance, Axis says it has become the ultimate enabler to the AI/ DL development community. ARTPEC-8 continues to facilitate Axis Lightfinder 2.0 and Axis Forensic WDR for the best image

Timing is everything, says

DanLaw’s AutoLink and RouteLink work hand-in-hand to improve traffic signal management. The combination not only helps time traffic signals to improve vehicle flow and allows the safe and fast passage of emergency vehiclesbut it can also lock down an intersection in the event of local emergency, such as a fallen pedestrian.

AutoLink’s on-board units support DSRC or C-V2X radios to give drivers enhanced route information that can be presented on a variety of HMI options, including LED displays, heads-up displays, infotainment systems, cellphones, tablets and audio output.

Meanwhile, RouteLink units, can send out red-light violation, reduced speed zone and curve speed warnings. Intersection movement and left-turn assists to keep traffic flowing no matter what time of day.

AEye is showcasing how its adaptive Lidar both enables smart mobility infrastructure, and improves intersection management, tolling and automatic incident detection on highways.

As Akram Benmbarek, VP of business development and strategic initiatives, points out, intelligent transportation systems are gaining sophistication, but still lack the intelligence to dynamically assess their environment and use real-time data to make smart decisions.

Next-gen Lidar advances ITS

“This is where adaptive Lidar comes in, adding value to ITS by delivering reliable, real-time 3D data and accurate object detection in all conditions,” says Benmbarek, adding that Lidar works even in harsh weather and poor lighting - and, in AEye’s case, at very long range: “It can distinguish between a car or a mother with a stroller at 200 metres.”

At the company’s booth here in Charlotte, AEye will demonstrate Lidar’s role in advancing ITS systems, including applications like

BOSCH’S VAAS SOLUTIONS

Bosch is demonstrating how its Video as a Sensor (VaaS) technology integrates seamlessly with partners' devices to provide endto-end real-time safety solutions for ITS.

At the booth, Bosch video sensors with built-in Traffic Detector software will detect heavy traffic on a highway as well as congestion on an interchange. Traffic Detector software improves detection capabilities in congested scenes, enabling accurate counting of overlapping vehicles queued in front of traffic lights or in dense traffic jams. It also ignores possible disturbances caused by vehicle headlights or shadows, extreme weather, and sun reflections.

When congestion is detected, the camera will trigger real-time alerts to integrated partner devices. Direct integration with MH Corbin and Yunex

Hill & Smith makes an impact

No matter how small an impact is to a barrier, its safety efficiency could be compromised – even if there is no visible evidence of an event. The HS2X impact notification device from Hill & Smith lets you know when your barrier has been compromised anytime, all the time.

The small wireless device weighs around one pound and measures less than 9 inches long, 4 inches wide and 2 inches high. It quickly attaches to a barrier, such as a crash attenuator, by either strong magnets or bolts. It is activated simply by maintenance personnel scanning the unit’s QR code and then it will automatically send a real-time email as well as SMS alerts the instant an event occurs.

It can even be placed inside a traffic cone to alert site crews of disrupted traffic safety routes. Importantly, in case of theft, a unit switches to recovery mode to activate real-time tracking notifications at 30-second intervals.

The HS2X has an accelerometer for Smart Movement-based tracking. It is powered by two D-size LTC batteries with up to five years of battery life. To help with maintenance, there is a built-in battery-life meter for remote monitoring.

Traffic devices enables a variety of CAV use cases using V2X communications. The Bosch integrated detection solution is a collective perception system that broadcasts safety messages to on-board units in connected vehicles.

The Bosch video sensors will also classify objects in the traffic scene as motorcycles, cars, trucks and buses, and feed the data that includes vehicle counts by lane, class, direction and speed into dashboards. The Bosch ITS Data Service dashboards display the information in an easily consumable and actionable format for informed decisionmaking. The Data Service can also be accessed directly using an API, allowing the rich data repository to be brought into existing reporting solutions.

Cybersecurity isn’t infrastructure? Like hell, it isn’t

This recent quote by the Mayor LaToya Cantrell of New Orleans is instructive. The transportation industry has made significant strides in awareness of the cyber vulnerabilities of traffic systems. Despite these improvements, we’ve yet to see the majority of DOTs take sufficient cybersecurity actions.

And today’s vulnerabilities will create far more risk as we expand the use of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) and Vehicle to Everything (V2X) communications. One approach to more efficiently accelerate the

deployment of cyber defences in transportation is to treat cybersecurity as part of the infrastructure, instead of an afterthought.

A possible analogy would be to say: “Pour the concrete for the bridge. Then, we can decide later whether to include rebar.” Rebar is an essential requirement; else, the bridge cannot be considered safe. Likewise, cybersecurity should be written into all new project requirements to, at the very least, limit the further deployment of vulnerable equipment and systems. Further, the inclusion of

cybersecurity as a required element of infrastructure projects should accelerate the improved security of systems.

Additionally, this approach would push selected contractors and vendors to build a cohesive cybersecurity approach into proposed projects and make them share responsibility for a successful outcome. While cybersecurity measures have been somewhat slow in the industry, there has been recent progress with a few DOTs taking effective steps towards securing their traffic networks.

In tomorrow’s (Friday’s)

conference session, Cybersecurity Isn’t Infrastructure? Like Hell, it Isn’t (08:00 – 09:00 East Wing E219D) the panel tackles today’s cybersecurity challenges from a range of perspectives, including the current threat landscape; DOT perspectives and challenges; limitations in existing ITS architecture; the consultant’s role in cybersecurity; workforce development needs; the evergrowing security challenges in the ITS industry; and security best practices for DOTs, agencies and hardware/ software manufacturers.
