MICHIGAN IS ‘EAGER PARTNER’ FOR ITS INNOVATION The importance of reliable and safe transportation to the economy and quality of life in Michigan was perfectly illustrated by the visit of state governor Gretchen Whitmer to ITS America 2026 Conference & Expo. She spoke to delegates and toured the Exhibit Hall, spending time at the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) booth in particular. She listened to many representatives of the organisations co-exhibiting there, including Loren Townes jr (pictured,
above left, with the governor), director of entrepreneurial services at Ann Arbor Spark. She asked Semtoc (Southeast Michigan Transportation Operations Center), which is run by Aecom, how drivers had been responding to Flex Route, a lane control system on I-96 and US-23 that uses a combination of signs, cameras and electronic message boards to let drivers know when an additional lane is available for use during morning and afternoon peak travel periods. Michigan – and
particularly the area between Lansing, Ann Arbor and Detroit – is a magnet for future transportation, driving growth, education and workforce development. Whitmer also talked to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute – which has just launched a drone mobility arm called M Air - about funding.
