Two of the winners of the Intertraffic Awards cut out the noise – literally – to take the trophies. Announced at the Opening Ceremony of Intertraffic Amsterdam, Italian company See won the Green Globe Award for its highly innovative Whisper NB-Eco-40-A3 acoustic panels. Meanwhile, UK-based Intelligent Instruments (left)

won for its Sound Vue noiseenforcement camera system in the User Experience category.

The coveted Inspiration Award was won by another British company, Valerann, which impressed the jury with its advanced real-time data analytics platform – Lanternn by Valerann (centre).

Chairman of the awards jury Pieter Litjens, director of

mobility knowledge institute Crow, revealed the three winners, chosen from the shortlist of 15 nominees.

Whisper acoustic panels won due to its low-CO2 production method and ease of installation, “and last for at least 50 years”.

Sound Vue uses a combination of video, AI and ANPR to detect and

fine vehicles that break legal noise levels. The jury felt this “represents a new trend in enforcement”.

And while Lanternn by Valerann takes familiar concepts in traffic optimisation, “it enables a new level of realtime reactions, that the jury believes will inspire urban mobility management for years to come”.

LINDSAY REIMAGINES ROADSIDE SAFETY

Lindsay is inviting visitors to Intertra c to reimagine roadside safety and sustainability through remote asset monitoring.

e company’s RoadConnect product is an online platform that gives users the ability to remotely monitor and manage key road and highway assets such as crash cushions, light poles, bridge structures, and more. As Lindsay points out, with limited manpower and large areas of coverage, it can be di cult to monitor a wide range of assets adequately and e ciently.

However, RoadConnect can help to increase the speed and reliability of roadside maintenance, save time and money while also improving road safety. Scott Marion, president Infrastructure at Lindsay comments: “Lindsay’s RoadConnect enables remote monitoring of the iconic Road Zipper machine, providing real-time data and enabling faster response times to increase machine uptime and performance.”

RoadConnect o ers a variety of roadside asset management solutions, including remote impact detection (ImpactAlert), so users will know right away when an asset has been impacted. It also incorporates lighting system monitoring and control (Light Guard Pulse), enabling remote control of lighting schedules for energy savings and uniformity while also helping decrease labour costs associated with repairs.

Marion comments that the new technology delivers extra capabilities to the Road Zipper system, which has been developed to a high level of performance over the last 30 years.

BEA unveils Evoloop access availability innovation

BEA is using the latest edition of Intertra ic to unveil Evoloop, which the Belgium-based company describes as an innovation designed to open barriers and secure perimeters for both vehicles and pedestrians. Evoloop ensures barrier availability, regardless of the prevailing weather conditions, with a mobile app allowing intuitive configuration of detection zones.

Imagine a sensor so intelligent that it reads critical passing vehicle information but is so small that it simply lies flush with the road surface. Imagine Tally, from New Zealand manufacturer Iternz.

Tally is up to five cheaper than the traditional but temporary cable across a lane with its accompanying roadside data collection box system. The data is collected by the physical contact of the vehicle running over the cable.

Instead, it takes little time to embed the solar-powered Tally sensor – small enough to hold in your hand – into the centre of a lane where it will provide realtime data for up to eight years. The unit needs only normal readily available 4G connection and all information is sent to the

cloud for easy analysis by road agencies.

The cost depends on the type of data required by a road agency or contractor, and ranges from traffic flow to environmental factors such as heat, freezing, greenhouse gas emissions all at ground level.

One of the key advantages of Tally is its accuracy, says Martin. By leveraging advanced technology, it can detect even the slightest changes in the road conditions, allowing for proactive maintenance and improvements in safety performance.

“Driver experience is key for EV success”

The US has just passed 175,000 public EV charging points, and the government says two million are needed by 2030. Lack of infrastructure has been a barrier to consumer take-up of EVs, but this infrastructure must also o er reliability and a high-quality experience to drive EV rollouts say industry insiders. Liam McLoughlin, managing editor of Electric Vehicle Charging & Infrastructure (EVC&I) reports

e driver experience and predictability of the charging network are vital to the success of the EV sector.

at was one of the key issues highlighted by Andrew Cornelia, CEO of the MercedesBenz HPC charging network for North America, while giving the keynote opening address at the EV Charging Summit & Expo in Las Vegas in March.

Cornelia said that the EV industry is at a tipping point, and media headlines about a slump in the sector do not tell the full story.

“Last year EV sales were up by 27%. At Mercedes-Benz, our EV sales were up by 250%,” said Cornelia.

He added that, while the next era of EV charging needs more infrastructure, more quantity and more construction, it will be propelled by quality and experience.

Cornelia drew parallels with the smartphone sector as an indication of how this cultural shift is nothing new.

“In 2000, half of adult Americans did not own a cell phone, and half of those

individuals had no plans to purchase one,” he said. “Just a decade later, 9 in 10 of us owned a cell phone. e batteries of these devices are simpler, but the story is familiar.

In 2010, we sold 300 EVs. Fast forward, and last year we sold 1.2 million.

“We went from less than 1.5% of cars on the road to about 10%. By 2030, the majority of new cars sold in America will be electric.”

Cornelia said that Mercedes-Benz has invested US$1bn in building its charging network in North America.

Highlighting the factors that are key for a successful rollout of EVs, he added: “First, we have to ensure predictability across the charging value chain. Second, we must push driver-focused public policy forward. And third, we have to centre our e orts around people, because the driver and the driver experience will increasingly become what de nes success for all of us.”

In terms of predictability, he said that network uptime is as important, if not more so, than network coverage. “Just like crossing

a bridge, when you show up charging has to work. is is critical infrastructure. Second, charging has to meet drivers where they are today and where they’re going tomorrow.”

While 80% of drivers have access to home charging today, Cornelia said that 60-70% of those drivers still use public charging at least once a week: “Public charging will be home charging for a large majority of drivers. at has to be a right.”

He added that interoperability is a core focus of Mercedes-Benz’s strategy and its charging network has been open to all drivers from day one.

Achievable standards

Beyond the nancial support the EV charging industry receives from the US government’s NEVI (National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) program, Cornelia said the sector also needs ambitious and achievable standards for interoperability, reliability and uptime.

He highlighted the Joint O ce of Energy and Transportation’s National Charging Experience Consortium, a public-private partnership that Mercedes-Benz is a member of, that looks to elevate the charging experience for all, which Cornelia said requires pushing charging technology forward.

“One way we are doing that is by o ering amongst the fastest charging outlets in North America. 400 kilowatts - that’s about a full charge in 15 to 20 minutes. Why fast charging? Because we want to go further than meeting today’s demand. We want to get ahead of tomorrow’s,” he added.

He said it’s not just increasing charging speeds, but also about driving down inconvenience, with a need to build valuable experiences around charging that match the dwell-time considerations at charging amenities.

Addressing the issue of the greater cost of an EV that has been a barrier to consumer uptake, he said this was now nearing a tipping point: “ e average cost of a gasoline vehicle is US$47,000 and the average cost of an EV is US$50,000. We are close.”

Returning to his smartphone analogy he added: “One of the major factors that turned smartphones from luxury to ubiquity was cost. Our phones were once a utility, now they are extensions of ourselves. Our cars will be the same.”

One of Cornelia’s fellow keynote panellists at the Las Vegas EV Charging Summit & Expo, National Power CEO Chris Hutter, says that two main issues are holding the EV charging sector back: “One is availability, and the other is reliability. And they are equally important.”

National Power provides power and infrastructure solutions for critical sectors in the US including broadband, telecom, hospital, data centre industries.

Hutter comments: “Availability is about the continued build-out of the charging stations in locations and ways that work for consumers. We think this will be a combination of existing gas station sites and additional sites such as destination locations that will need to be built.

“Reliability is the second issue and it goes hand-in-hand with availability. We have to make sure that when you go to charge at a charging station it actually works and there are bays available. at’s increasingly a major problem.

“We have this push in the US to get the chargers out there, but what we’re seeing and nding is that there really isn’t a systematic approach to the ongoing maintenance and break/ x needs of the infrastructure. at’s what we at National Power do in the rest of our business, so it’s one of the areas where we think we can really help the industry. We are all about uptime.”

On 20 March, US Environmental Protection Agency administrator Michael Reagan said that the US needs two million more EV chargers by the end of the decade to reach its electri cation goals.

Alex Schroeder, chief technology o cer for the US Joint O ce of Energy and Transportation, says that the US was set to pass 175,000 public EV charging point by the end of March, but more improvement needs to be achieved.

He added that the Joint O ce is focused on ensuring that every American has the opportunity to “drive and thrive” in the country, with charging infrastructure being a critical portion of that.

“We can no longer say energy and transportation – they cannot be treated separately. at’s what the Joint O ce is about,” says Schroeder.

e Joint O ce provides technical assistance on planning and implementation of a national network of EV chargers and

zero-emission fuelling infrastructure as well as zero-emission transit and school buses. In terms of the Joint O ce’s policy interventions, Schroeder added: “Some is just putting the funding together. And I think recognising that we need to build a national network that is accessible to everyone.

“ ere might be some places that need a little more help than others, so our focus has really been on building out a coast-to-coast [EV charging] network for 80,000 miles of highway.

“So, we’re really there to be a catalyst. I think one of the biggest things that we do is start to create standards at the federal level. Setting a minimum standard of 97% EV charger uptime. A minimum port and power level for all of the federally funded EV charging sites so that you know what to expect and know it’s going to be there after 50 miles.”

Jim Castelaz, founder and CEO of all-electric truck and bus manufacturer Motiv Power Systems, highlighted one his company’s deployments with Bimbo Bakeries USA (BBU) as showing how to get EV charging infrastructure rollouts right.

BBU rolled out 30 Motiv bread delivery e-trucks at a facility in California, and Castelaz says BBU didn’t have to involve utilities or bring any new power into the building to power the trucks.

“ e 30 trucks drive an average of 50 miles a day, so that’s a total of 1,500 miles of driving,” Castelaz adds. “Around 1,500 kilowatt hours are put into those trucks every night. ey have a 15-hour dwell time, so they can be charged then. No utilities were involved, just the city permit.

“It doesn’t have to be a scary utility power project.”

Emovis’ work in the Netherlands demonstrates many benefits of free flow tolling as Benoît Rossi, director of business development at Emovis, an Abertis-owned entity, highlights

Commuter numbers are increasing all the time. It is imperative to keep these motorists moving freely. If not, there is a steep cost to pay. Congestion increases. Lost time reduces economic production. e environment is negatively impacted. ese realities can be combatted through free ow – collecting payment without use of toll booths. With the cloud-based free ow solution designed by Emovis in the Netherlands, we go one step further into digital road mobility.

Free ow is not new in Europe: UK and Ireland introduced it several years ago by converting their traditional tolled systems. For the Netherlands, free ow has been deployed as part of the introduction of tolling in the country. In 2022, the Dutch Vehicle Authority (RDW) awarded a contract to Emovis. We were tasked with designing, installing and servicing the roadside and operational back o ce of the country’s rst free ow tolling system along the new A24 highway.

It is never easy for a government to introduce tolls. e Dutch authorities

decided to introduce tolling to partly nance the construction of the €1billion strategic A24 link connecting the A15 and the A20 highways west of Rotterdam. Tolls could also be introduced to fund the future ViA15 link located about 110 km east from Rotterdam using the same digital tolling platform developed by Emovis. Free- ow tolling aligns to the government’s vision for sustainable mobility.

RDW – Partner in Mobility

RDW plays a central role in the national road mobility chain. e organisation has developed extensive expertise through its years of experience in executing its statutory and assigned tasks in the area of the licensing of vehicles and vehicle parts, supervision and enforcement, registration, information provision and issuing documents.

RDW has recently embarked upon a new responsibility as the central coordinating executive agency for toll collection in the Netherlands. us, RDW will serve as the toll charger for two forthcoming tolling

schemes. Firstly, the e-Tol scheme for the new A24 highway near Rotterdam in 2024, followed by the operationalisation of the Heavy Goods Vehicle Charge in 2026.

Exciting Opportunity

What makes this project even more exciting is the implementation of our cloud-based tolling solution. is means that toll transactions will be processed in the “cloud” and not on a physical IT infrastructure as is often the case. It is an exciting step towards a tolling future in Europe anchored on digital mobility. It eliminates the need for a dedicated data centre and disaster recovery site. Cloud tolling was a perfect t for this BBV project in the Netherlands as there were no prior tolling systems in place. In addition, there was a need to have a highly scalable transactional platform since actual tra c volumes are always hard to predict for new road infrastructures.

But you might be thinking about the following questions: Where are motorists’ data? Is this GDPR compliance? What about cyber attacks? Where is my recovery site? Where is the on/o button to restart the system?

High standards from RDW

Our client , RDW, sets the bar high when it comes to handling toll-related data. Jan Strijk, RDW director whose department is

in charge of the nation’s tolling programs, emphasises: “Our organisation has very high standards when it comes security and data privacy and we expect our suppliers to strictly conform to our standards and regulations”.

So, it would be naïve to think that the cloud journey is a quick and easy ride. e security, integrity and availability of our tolling solutions and operations fall under the remit of our Global Security & Data Protection O cer.

We began this approach in the UK, where we have been operating freeow for over 12 years. Initially all systems were on-premises/in-house, but the evolution to cloud computing changed the skills and knowledge required of IT.

My colleague Paul Sexby, Emovis’ Global Security & Data Protection O cer, noted: “ e EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in uences the landscape relating to cloud computing. Cloud providers are required to be more transparent in sharing the location of the

data centres and the sta who operate and maintain the systems.”

To process toll transactions in the cloud, we’ve been developing a high-performing, in-house, transactional engine, known as Operational Back O ce. It applies a highdegree of automation processes to qualify roadside transactions using eld sensors such as ANPR, DSRC/RFID antennas, odometer readings, GPS positioning data and ODB dongles. is software has been designed so it can be hosted on-premises or in the cloud. Grappling with this early on helped us “demystify” the emotional aspect attached to cloud tolling and de ne a framework that can be applied to any cloudbased tolling schemes.

2. Enhanced Business Continuity – A sound cloud computing architecture enables us to design and build greater resilience in our solutions. As a result, we can better react to adverse situations.

3. Transparency – Our clients are the data controllers. We process the data and are able to transparently share where and how their customers data has been processed.

4. Scalability – With a cloud architecture, it is easy and quick to scale up or down the toll transactional capacity. is is particularly important when tra c is expected to uctuate, grow over the years or when new toll schemes are likely to be developed.

e cloud-based infrastructure can be used for managing other new toll schemes, such as Road Usage Charging. Both freeow and distance-based charging could make use of this cloud-based back-o ce solution.

AES Global is promoting its e-Loop system and its advantages over traditional ground loops.

The company says that it takes only 20 to 30 minutes to install and integrate the e-Loop into an existing gate or barrier system, saving time compared to installing ground loops. Whisper NB-Eco-40-A3, from acoustic material developer Sealed Air, is a new sustainable solution for acoustic absorption in noise barrier walls. The manufacturer says the non-hazardous recyclable solution can o er close to 25% reduction in CO2 emissions over similar mineral wool solutions.

Whisper NB-Eco-40-A3 has category A3 absorption performance, with 5-6dB insitu reflection and a 50-year acoustic working life to EN 14389-1. In fact, it is so durable that protective covers may be eliminated, according to the company.

Alliance alert system is flash of genius

A faster, less expensive way of alerting motorists to approaching dangers is being demonstrated by Abu Dhabi-based Alliance Tra ic Systems.

Instead of putting warning messages on overhead variable message signs (VMS) – “Very expensive,” comments Alliance CEO, Mohammad Al Abbadi – Alliance has in the past few days finished installing 7,000 roadside lights in Abu Dhabi.

This is the first phase of a project to warn drivers of problems ahead. The lights, which are solar powered, can change colour, depending on the nature of the problem. Red signals congestion, for example, while blue signifies an accident, yellow is weather-related and white is roadworks/detour.

These lights can be installed every 50 metres: “They give early warning to drivers without them having to

read anything,” explained Al Abbadi. “The purpose of these is to fill gaps between VMS. You see our lights, you become more cautious and you then give more attention to the [VMS] messages.”

In another project, Alliance has installed in-road lights in the fast lanes of Abu Dhabi motorways. These lights flash red or blue in the event of an accident up ahead and alert drivers to move out of the lane, which becomes a temporary ‘hard shoulder’ for emergency vehicles to reach the scene of the incident.

And for those drivers who try to take advantage of a suddenly empty lane to get ahead of other motorists…they are promptly snapped by enforcement cameras. The penalty? 3,000 dirhams ($815) – 10 times the cost of a speeding ticket.
