ITS America launched MobilityXX this year to start redressing the gender imbalance in the transport sector, and a major session on Thursday will examine practical steps to get more women into the industry
There are not enough women in the transportation industry – and that has a detrimental impact on the way in which transport infrastructure and transit services are designed, with often little thought given to the mobility needs and travel patterns of women. Comprising only 15% of the 14.8-millionperson transport workforce and even less at the CEO and C-suite level, women’s voices in transportation have long been underrepresented.
The knock-on effects of this lack of input are stark: consideration for personal safety has an impact on access to good travel choices, which means simply being a woman increases the cost of travel compared to men. “Women are used to paying more for safe transportation,” says Laura Chace, president & CEO of ITS America. “Women use the system differently: we end up using multiple modes perhaps in one day or in one sitting; we end up losing time and that can equate to reduced economic opportunity - because your access to transportation is so intricately linked to economic opportunity.”
This year, ITS America and partners The Ray and WTS International Foundation, launched the MobilityXX initiative to address the issue. “MobilityXX is focused on the need to have more diverse perspectives in the transportation workforce so that we can actually create these outcomes for safer, more equitable choices for all,” says Chace.
The ITS America 2021 Annual Meeting here in Charlotte is a good time to take stock. At the MobilityXX Breakfast and Session, which starts at 08:00 AM on Thursday 9 December, there will be a discussion on practical steps to encourage diversity, inclusion, retention, and advancement.

They will highlight the importance of ongoing mentorship for women in our industry. MobilityXX is committed to boost the number of women in the transportation industry by 10% over the next 10 years –which is highly significant because census data suggests that the number of women in the industry only increased by 3% in the last 15 years. One breakfast topic sure to provoke discussion is the MobilityXX corporate pledge programme.
“It is really based on this premise that we need diverse perspectives around the table to lift everyone in order to represent all of the communities that we are purporting to serve,” says Chace. “We are asking public
sector and private sector organisations to commit to taking two actions to increase the number or influence of women. Examples are things like having diverse hiring panels: when you’re hiring for positions, committing to interview diverse candidates; or things like creating a sponsorship programme for women in your company and committing to increase the number of women on your boards.”
Many companies have joined already and Chace says there is a clear desire for change. Crucially, she believes the ’10 by 10’ target is achievable and that the pledge creates a platform where companies and organisations can take committed action.
“The more people, the more companies and organisations we can get to commit to this, we do believe that we will see results,” concludes Chace.

Carlos M. Braceras, executive director of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has been inducted into the ITS America Hall of Fame.
Elections to the ITS America Hall of Fame are made annually, and are rooted in recipients’ proven leadership in the transportation technology arena. One requirement is that each individual must be an advocate and demonstrator of technology’s role in transportation.
Braceras was appointed executive director of the UDOT by Governor Gary Herbert on May 6, 2013. He was reappointed to serve as executive Director by Governor Spencer Cox in January 2021. In this capacity, he is responsible for UDOT’s
more than 1,600 employees and the design, construction, and maintenance of Utah’s 6,000-mile system of roads and highways. He has recently launched a redefining of the Department’s goals and mission and has overseen the completion of several massive highway projects like the Utah County I-15 Corridor Expansion (I-15 CORE) and the Mountain View Corridor in west Salt Lake County. Both projects used innovative contracting methods that allowed each to be completed in record time.
"It's an honour to be recognised by so many of my distinguished colleagues and ITS America,” Braceras commented. “The transportation industry is undergoing one of its most transformative periods so many individuals who are passionate about pushing the
boundaries of what's possible to enhance quality of life through transportation technology."
Prior to joining UDOT, Braceras worked as a well-site geologist doing oil and gas exploration and development. He is currently chair of the AASHTO Design Committee, chair of the Centre for Environmental Excellence Advisory Board, member and past chair of the TRB Executive Committee, member of the board of directors and past president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, member of the board of directors and past president of the Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, past chair of ITS America, and past chair of RUC West.

MG Squared has two innovations here in Charlotte: an Ethernet connector that consistently delivers high-quality multi-GigaBit Ethernet signals simultaneously to as many as six, 4K resolution, PTZ cameras; and a newly developed custom six-camera mount called The Beetle. Why pay for single use emergency flares when there are Pi-lit mobile sequential flares? The second-generation rechargeable flares can operate up to 20 hours’ continuous flashing and can be placed in any configuration to ensure safety in the most dangerous situations.
With the press of a button on one of the flares, the entire line will “talk to each other” and fire off in the desired sequence. They can be placed around a broken-down vehicle or attached to the rear of an emergency vehicle to divert traffic around the situation. Importantly, the sequence can be reversed if necessary to improve safety in the area.

Qualcomm is well-known for integrating its Vehicle to Everything (V2X) technology into cars – but it is now turning its attention to cyclists. The company is putting its efforts into increasing the visibility of vulnerable road users (VRUs), adding sensors to bicycles which will alert vehicles to their presence and increase safety.
“It’s the same chipset, the
same technology,” says Praveen Singh director (pictured), business development, at Qualcomm. “We’re trying to bring VRUs to the same safety standard as cars. A lot of car manufacturers are interested in the technology, they’re keen to see how this would work for them.”
At ITS America 2021 in Charlotte, Image Sensing Systems (ISS) is showing off its next-generation wrong-way alerting solution that includes Alert Trust.
Every wrong-way driving event starts with a mistake that can result in a severe or fatal accident. How these events are resolved no longer needs to be left up to chance, ISS insists.

Recent statistics regarding road deaths in the US have been sobering – despite reduced
vehicle miles travelled during the Covid pandemic, fatalities actually rose. “VRU fatalities are increasing at a faster pace,” says Singh. He believes the rise in popularity of high-speed electric bikes also creates potential vulnerabilities. “We’re working with the bike OEMs to eventually integrate V2X tech into bikes,” Singh said. “Also there is a huge aftermarket for accessories.”
Cyclists wear reflective clothing and flashing lights, and Qualcomm’s solution will create even more visibility, says Singh: “We’re providing a wireless signal that can be seen across trees and buildings.”
The solution is expected to be out in the second half of 2022.

Forward-thinking public agencies are turning to a new breed of solutions provider to address current traveller needs. They work with system integrators, independent software vendors, and consultants to innovate using Amazon Web Services (AWS) to improve traffic safety, construction project management, analytics and reporting, and secure identification.
Phil Silver, a state and local government transportation leader at AWS, provides examples of how builders on AWS are transforming transport using technology
Government technology (GovTech) firm Iteris relies on AWS to offer their customers end-to-end solutions for smart mobility infrastructure management. At the intersection, for example, Iteris combines cloud-based analytics with advanced sensors to make sure that signal timing maximises driver, pedestrian and cyclist safety, optimises traffic throughput, and reduces red light incidents. Iteris helps monitor intersection health, provide proactive alerts, optimise signal timing, and calculate travel time reliability, while deploying vehicleto-everything technologies to ready cities and states for the further proliferation of connected and automated vehicles.
At the transportation network level, Iteris’ cloud-based ClearGuide identifies the underlying causes of congestion and delay at intersections, arterials, and highways to support states such as California, Georgia, and North Carolina, regional agencies such as Los Angeles Metro and Hillsborough County Metropolitan Planning Organisation, and local municipalities such as Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Lakeland, Florida.
According to McKinsey, by 2030, about 95 per cent of new vehicles sold globally will be connected, meaning they can share anonymous data on speed and volume. GovTech Waycare uses connected vehicles (CVs) as a cost-effective supplement to roadway sensors. Gartner estimates that each CV generates 280 petabytes of data annually, making cloud an ideal way to store and analyse it. Waycare is leveraging this data for key insights to be found, extracted, analysed, and translated to produce actionable insights and predictions for traffic safety and congestion management.
AWS Technology Partner HeadLight automates the traditional paper-borne
process for infrastructure inspection. They capture geolocated video and image data for improved reporting and decision making to help build and repair bridges, roads, and other critical infrastructure. Every construction project at the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development uses HeadLight, and over one million observations delivered a 28 per cent increase in productivity of inspectors. Agencies can prioritise their critical work by inspecting more projects and prioritising maintenance and repairs when and where they need to happen first. Quality of life has also improved since inspectors don’t need to come to the office to physically file reports. Other benefits include risk mitigation against project delays and defects. There is often at least a 75 per cent reduction in claims because there is more data available in real-time. HeadLight is used by a number of public infrastructure owners, including departments of transportation in Utah and Rhode Island.
The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) worked with AWS Consulting Partner Enquizit to develop and execute a data migration roadmap, combining all USDOT agencies who were in various phases of their own cloud journeys. In six months, this transformation moved USDOT from a decentralised patchwork of disparate departments without internal transparency to an upskilled, securitycompliant setup operating efficiently on the AWS Cloud. This process started with a portfolio discovery to identify a map of current system capabilities and migration paths. As a result, USDOT can consolidate information from multiple sources to provide up-to-date and actionable data to states and local government.
Identity, security, and biometrics firm Idemia, an AWS Technology Partner, provides secure identification services for the Transportation Security Administration as well as departments of motor vehicles. This includes mobile identification (ID) services for the Arizona DOT (ADOT) Motor Vehicle Division. Idemia enables a digital version of driver’s license and other state-issued ID in a smartphone app with support for physical and online ID verification. Idemia’s Mobile ID augmented identity solution complements physical forms of identification, providing privacy and enabling secure, authenticated, and verified transactions for drivers in Arizona, Oklahoma, and Delaware.

In today’s connected world, ITS plays a vital role managing critical infrastructure including roadways, interstates, intersections, ports, mass transit lines, city traffic and urban mobility.
As connected infrastructure (Internet of Things), roadways (Vehicle to Infrastructure/ Vehicle to Vehicle) and connected and autonomous vehicles (C/AV) have become a reality, cybersecuring our infrastructure and protecting the safety of our citizens is critical - yet continues to be overlooked and undervalued.
At 360ns, we looked at this problem and came up with a solution three years ago to bring card access control to traffic cabinets. The system we developed encompassed an Axis A1601 door controller, smart key override and access-control software as the solution.
Since the beginning, we have updated the lock and controller and have built the
door controller into the lock so that there is no additional space needed inside the cabinet. The SL8000 is the primary lock and controller, with the primary lock connecting to up to four more SL8000 secondary locks. The SL8000 uses Flex-Connect and is Ethernet-, Bluetooth- and Wi-Fi-capable.
There is no modification to the cabinet needed or additional equipment placed inside the cabinet. The old locks are removed and the new ones installed. The key to securing the edge is to know who has access, key holder management and when was the cabinet entered and by who. Was the door left open or is the lock not secured completely? The most important is key holder management and removing the #2 Corbin key out of the mix to give you full control and security of your traffic cabinets.
