Michael Schuch, CEO of Swarco, talks to Daily News about the use of artificial intelligence

in tra ic management, and the challenges facing the industry

Swarco believes AI has the ability to make tra c control truly adaptive, maybe for the rst time at network scale, shifting tra c management from being reactive to proactive. “AI is part of our toolbox - a great tool, but of course you have to use it in a responsible way,” says Michael Schuch, CEO of Swarco.

At Intertra c Amsterdam, Swarco is highlighting two main concepts: using AI in customer deployments as a ‘co-pilot’ for tra c operators; and as a self-learning layer in the eld.

“ e ‘co-pilot’ part is essentially a set of AI agents embedded in your tra c management system that generates better forecasts for demand, incidents, and parking, to enable easier intervention and a smoother tra c ow,” explains Schuch.

AI scepticism

“Our ‘Edge AI’ solution enables adaptive tra c control by self-learning algorithms that optimise signals at the intersection and across the whole corridor in real time. What we see already is that they outperform traditional vehicle-activated control. But equally, we are cutting programming and con guration e orts on our end for the customer, simplifying multimodal prioritisation. e bottom line is: AI is a win – if it’s used in a responsible way. Lowering operating costs, fewer delays - and you get also a more resilient network by it.”

But the key is responsibility, Schuch insists: “ ere’s a lot of scepticism around AI, so we are trying to keep the humans in

the loop with clear guardrails and fail-safe modes. Human expertise and experience remain the foundation of mission-critical mobility systems.”

So AI is seen as an opportunity for the ITS industry – what are the current challenges?

Schuch identi es three main areas. “ e rst one is nancial capacity,” he says. “ at is a fundamental constraint, especially because public authorities are working on a tight budget, with traditional procurement frameworks. For ITS deployments, this often just slows down innovation and limits the ability to deploy cutting-edge solutions at scale.”

While some ITS functions, such as tolling or congestion charging, are direct revenue generators, many other bene ts from ITS are ‘societal’, Schuch says: “ ey are things like improved safety or reduced congestion, therefore it is sometimes quite di cult to build a strong investment case.”

e second crucial challenge he sees is around cyber security and resilience.

“ ese have become critical issues, especially since transport infrastructure has become more connected through V2X communication, cloud-based tra c management and data-driven services,” Schuch explains. “Put simply, the ‘attack surface’ for cyberattacks just increases

signi cantly - and in today’s geopolitical context, that is de nitely something you must consider when designing infrastructure solutions, deploying them, and operating them, because it is part of our critical infrastructure.”

Sheer complexity

e third problem area that Schuch sees is the sheer complexity of the ITS ecosystem. “Because it involves multiple stakeholders - national, regional, local authorities, infrastructure operators, vehicle manufacturers, technology providers like Swarco – and we often have to operate on legacy systems based on di erent standards,” he says. “ at is quite a big challenge when introducing new technologies, trying to scale them – and not only with AI, it’s 5G, edge computing, cloud computing, all of those.”

Despite this, Schuch is optimistic. He welcomes competition but also says the ITS sector needs to work together sometimes. “To move the industry forward, there needs to be cooperation both between and within stakeholder groups – especially among the large players,” he concludes. “Sometimes we have to open up and ensure that cooperation is possible, so we can scale innovative approaches, systems, and solutions.”
