e location couldn’t be more appropriate. Los Angeles is rede ning transportation. Already, more than 60,000 electric vehicles ply the city streets, with consumer adoption fuelled by rebates, tax credits, carpool lane incentives, and rapidly growing charging infrastructure.

Intelligent transportation is safer, greener, and smarter, and implementation is accelerating fast. e ITS World Congress 2022 is, therefore, not only a look into the future but also a commemoration of today’s success. e opportunity to celebrate, learn, explore, and drive change forward together is here. Right now.

SENSYS DETECTION SENSOR IS A TRUE TIME-SAVER

Sensys Networks is using the ITS World Congress 2022 to unveil an all-new vehicle detection sensor, FlexMag Mini, that installs in a fraction of the time of inductive loops – two to ve minutes per sensor. As the company points out, in-ground detection is known for its unmatched accuracy, but loops require lengthy lane closures and cutting up the pavement to install or replace. With FlexMag Mini, transportation agencies can

get the bene t of accurate detection for any application with minimal lane closures. Plus, transportation studies have shown that FlexMag outlasts loops by 30%.

“We introduced the original wireless FlexMag to replace vulnerable loops, which break too easily,” says Bill Weber, VP of sales and marketing, Americas. “Now FlexMag Mini, which includes our upgraded battery and radios in a smaller package, installs in just two to ve minutes.”

FlexMag Mini represents the culmination of Sensys Networks’ millions of hours of sensor operations in punishing real-world environments around the globe. e result is an even smaller but robust sensor made to withstand extreme conditions. It is even easier to install with minimal epoxy and rolling closures, further reducing the cost and time for installation.

Michelin celebrates RoadBotics acquisition

Michelin is using the ITS World Congress in Los Angeles to introduce its latest acquisition RoadBotics—showcasing ways that the new division’s image analysis technology can make roads safer for drivers.

RoadBotics’ RoadWay solution uses images collected via smartphone to automatically assess road conditions. The images are analysed by the company’s proprietary AI algorithm to generate truly objective road ratings on an

interactive, colour-coded map. The insights include a rating, including time and location data for each 10-foot section of road.

Agencies can then better prioritise road repair and maintenance and allocate resources appropriately based on data-driven insights rather than subjective human assessments.

Another solution from RoadBotics, AgileMapper, uses machine learning (ML) to identify, tag and organise an agency’s

infrastructure assets, providing a baseline of reference for inventory and on-going maintenance.

Roadway joins Michelin DDi, a division of the company that uses data to bring intelligence to driving.

Michelin DDi’s Safer Roads services help transportation agencies reduce the number of collisions and fatalities on the road by providing better driving behaviour data analysis to detect, locate and assess near misses.

Using data from more than 40 million US connected drivers, the Near Miss suite locates and counts atypical driving events, assesses and ranks near miss hotspots and calculates the probability of a crash.

This allows agencies to better understand where and when safety issues may arise and take action to fix infrastructure issues before crashes and casualties occur.

Esri so ware manages complexity

Urban mobility patterns had been rapidly changing even before the pandemic.

Transportation professionals who are tasked with designing and managing the multimodal networks of the future will depend on ever-greater amounts of data and information, drawn from a variety of disparate sources.

Managing this complexity is easier with Esri’s location-based software, which provides a comprehensive platform to

organise, visualise and analyse data, whether streaming from connected vehicles, sensors, and cameras, or drawn from more traditional sources.

ArcGIS Velocity is designed to provide real-time analytical processing on live streaming data. It enables users to ingest data from Internet of ings platforms, message brokers, or third-party APIs, and to process, visualise and analyse that data in real time, while storing those feeds as a big data store in the Cloud.

e ArcGIS suite of products helps unlock the location intelligence of data, and to perform analysis that lets users see and understand data and information in a deeper way. Moreover, the ArcGIS platform helps transportation professionals build the smart cities of the future, which are more sustainable, accessible, and which provide greater transportation equity for their residents.

ONE.NETWORK PUTS SAFETY FIRST

It’s a first for the US, says one.network, where it and the Florida DOT have delivered a phone-based app allowing road workers control over their own on-site safety.

Using Live Link – on display at the company’s booth – construction crews using a mobile app can open and close lanes right from the work zone. Based on one.network’s UK platform, tra ic management and work zone teams can plan lane or road closures ahead of time, with simple and easy-to-use

applications. Plus, they can respond quickly to emergencies, always keeping the public up-to-date with changes to the road network, explains James Harris, chief executive of one. network.

“Work zone fatalities are trending in the wrong direction,” he said. “One of America’s most respected agencies, FDOT recognised the urgent need for this kind of solution to protect work crews and drivers.”

Florida road data from Live Link is already

being delivered in near real-time, to drivers through GPS mapping provider WAZE, with the other navigation companies expected to follow soon. “It’s a solution that can be replicated anywhere,” said Harris.

Already, one.network’s smart work zone technology has been extensively vetted in the UK where it is used by the majority of road agencies.

BOSCH BRINGS REAL-TIME SAFETY TO LIFE

Visitors will have an opportunity to see how Bosch’s video-as-a-sensor technology enables real-time safety solutions for ITS.

Bosch video sensors with embedded neural network-based video analyticsdeveloped specifically for ITS applications - will detect safety risks such as heavy traffic on a highway as well as congestion on an interchange. The camera will trigger alerts to partner devices for V2X communications – broadcasting safety messages to on-board units in connected vehicles. In addition to these demonstrations, the cameras can also alert on pedestrian presence, slow vehicles, stopped vehicles – and vehicles travelling the wrong way.

The built-in analytics detector uses technology based on neural network AI that attempts to mimic the human brain to learn from large amounts of data and recognise patterns to tackle complex tasks more accurately.

It improves detection capabilities in congested scenes for precise counting of overlapping vehicles at traffic lights or in traffic jams. But it will ignore disturbances caused by headlights, extreme weather, sun glare, vibration, and shake – delivering accurate detection for real-time use cases and statistical data reporting.

At the Bosch stand, video sensors will also classify objects in the traffic scene as motorcycles, cars, trucks, and buses, and feed the data, including vehicle counts by lane, class, direction, and speed into dashboards.

The Bosch ITS Data Service dashboards display the information in an easily consumable and actionable format for informed decision-making. The Data Service can also be accessed using an API for importing data into existing reporting solutions.

Nota AI at the crossroads

ITS solutions from Nota AI consist of three traffic management solutions for intersections. AI Traffic Camera, AI Safe Crossing and AI Traffic Signal Control enable high performance of AI models on low-cost edge devices – being demonstrated at the company’s stand.

The AI Traffic Camera collects traffic data including vehicle type, traffic flow and weather conditions. This involves spatial information including queue length, number of queuing vehicles and average speed. AI Safe Crossing builds an LDM (local dynamic map) layer 4 using short-term object information. It ensures protection of pedestrians by way of collision prediction, pinpointing potential accidents. It provides warning signs, three seconds before, through in-ground devices such as light or voice alerts. For that third level of protection, AI Traffic Signal Control ensures reinforcement learning based optimal control using traffic data from AI Traffic Camera. There is also isolated intersection and arterial traffic control as well as traffic network control.

Panellists include Kome Ajise, executive director of the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG); Toks Omishakin secretary of the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA); Lara Poloni, president of AECOM; Stephanie N Wiggins, CEO, LA Metro ; and Connie Llanos, LADOT’s Chief of Staff and Strategy & Acting General ManagerOffice of External Affairs.

Today's Schedule Day 1 CONGRESS PROGRAMME

Mobility as a Service (MaaS) starts with a very wide step: ITS standards. Several initiatives have sprouted around the world: they go from industry de-facto standards such as GTFS or MDS to official standards from a normalisation body such as NeTEx or SIRI, to recent open initiatives such as TOMP-API. For the past 18 months, the stakeholders of the ecosystem have come together to build convergence between the standards to benefit travellers.

The session Building a Thriving Ecosystem for ITS Standards (13:00 – 14:30 Room 407) will present how to ensure the success of standards from its implementation to its governance; the necessity of convergence and/or interoperability and how to build it. Finally, some success stories will be presented to inspire attendees from around the world to join the movement of an open mobility ecosystem based on trusted partnerships.

There have been substantial advancements in truck automation in the last three years. A major focus on real-world deployment has been carefully and methodically designing and testing this technology over millions of realworld road miles with the goal of eventually demonstrating that drivers can safely be removed from cabs in ‘optimal’ circumstances. In the United States, this has been primarily in the southwest, where there are long stretches of rural interstates with less traffic and predictable, uneventful weather. But what about the edge cases: first and last mile, yard and terminal movements, inclement and unpredictable weather? The session Advancing Truck Automation to the Edge (13:00 – 14:30 Room 409B) will bring together public agencies, technology developers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), trucking fleets, and advocacy organisations to examine the projects and solutions that are tackling these exceptional use cases.

In special interest session Transformation by Transportation: Intelligent Transportation Technology Solutions from USA, China, and Germany (15:00 – 16:30 Room 404A) Los Angeles, Beijing, and Berlin have teamed up to discuss approaches to the challenges they face in their mobility planning. The goal of the session is to present an original and singular insight into the variety of innovative solutions from the world’s leading metropolitan regions, showcasing current projects and highlights in intelligent transportation technology. Similarities and differences between the different regions will be discussed, and ways to learn from each other will be identified.

Emerging Tech Platforms to Create End-toEnd Secure Freight Solutions (15:00 – 16:30 Room 406B) explores the potential to leverage multiple emerging technologies to enable a trusted freight program that distributes security procedures and processes across the full lifecycle from origin to destination. The distribution of these processes mitigates congestion and gridlock at seaports, airports, customs facilities, and intermediate facilities. Proposed approaches include the integration of connected vehicles, RFID, Weigh in Motion, trusted carrier enrolment, and biometric access control systems to build an integrated platform to ensure physical and cybersecurity for pre-screened movement of goods.

Workshops

As automakers, wireless service providers, and government regulators confront an increasingly complicated connected vehicle technology landscape, the connected vehicle data value proposition for road authorities must become a bigger part of the discussion.

The workshop Connected Vehicle Data and the Public Good: Opportunities and Challenges (13:00 – 14:30 Room 409A) will bring together key stakeholders to consider the complementary roles of data carried by personal/vehicle-area, local/road-area, and cellular/wide-area networks. It will also address the complementary roles of legislation, standards development, and the market in building consensus regarding device specifications and deployment strategies. Finally, it will consider the role of connected vehicle data in delivering the public good, and how the public good can be delivered while respecting the proprietary interests of the private sector.

The Smart Corridor Technologies workshop (15:00 – 16:30 Room 409A) will use the FHWA’s Carma program as the guiding principle. Speakers include: PennDOT/City of Pittsburgh Smart Spine corridors, connecting Pittsburgh’s densest population centres to Downtown and Oakland, the second and third largest employment hubs in the state. FDOT will discuss its Statewide Arterial Management Program (STAMP), and the City of Melbourne, Australia will present its AIMES: Australian Integrated Multimodal Ecosystem initiatives. Focusing on smart corridors, this session will discuss cross cutting issues and opportunities by applying standardsbased advanced technology solutions.

The Future is Here.

Pi-Lit’s sensors keep track of safety assets

Pi-Lit Technologies will be showcasing its Work Zone Data Exchange-compliant communication solutions that ease delivery of critical monitoring and event recognition to appropriate governmental entities.

Monitoring the status of critical safety assets such as crash cushions, guard rails and cable barriers has long been based on informal human observation. Pi-Lit’s small, long-life (4-5 year) battery-powered sensors automatically detect major and minor impact events and immediately notify the appropriate personnel.

According to the company, cost of deployment and monthly connection costs are minimised through Pi-Lit’s “many-to-one” mesh networks that allow many sensors to connect to the Cloud services via a single cellular modem. As autonomous vehicles become more ubiquitous, GPS tagging of work zone assets with an accuracy to within 10 centimetres allows agencies to map work zones and deliver the dynamic layout to vehicles kilometres upstream in real time.

The same technology provides for Cloud-connected Doppler Radar sensors, sequential smart marching lamps for tra ic control and impact/fail-over detection of all delineators and lamps (cones, barrels, vertical panels, etc.).

ITERIS TACKLES SCOURGE OF RED LIGHT CRASHES

A2019 AAA survey reported that 31% of drivers admitted to running a red light within the last 30 days. When vehicles dangerously accelerate upon approaching a stable green signal, what if you could hold the opposing traffic’s red light until the offending vehicle was safely through the intersection? Now you can.

Iteris Red Extend works with a Vantage Vector advanced radar detection camera placed strategically in front of the traffic signal. This enables it to communicate to the signal controller whenever a vehicle is approaching that - due to its speed and

proximity to the signal - will not stop for the light. The company is providing free demonstrations all this week.

“Red Extend alerts the traffic signal controller to automatically extend the opposing red light until the speeding vehicle is safely through the intersection,” explains Iteris CEO Joe Bergera. “Iteris is always looking to improve our technology to make roadways safer, and the Vantage Vector sensor empowered with Red Extend is a great example.”

Automated real-time signal adjustments can drastically reduce the amount of red-

light running crashes in a city. In the city of Lakeland, FL, for example, Vantage Vector red-light running cameras were added to identify dangerous speeding in this dilemma zone.

Extrapolating from the alarming AAA driver survey data, cities like Lakeland that have over 170 signalised intersections and approximately 46,000 people driving alone to work daily could potentially avoid up to 14,000 red-light runs per month with Iteris Red Extend.

SMATS cuts through data ‘noise’

Data overload is real, according to SMATS, the transportation industry’s self-appointed data architect. Today’s transportation o icials face an overwhelming amount of data from a variety of sources—including roadside sensor collected data from vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, crowdsourced data, connected car data, fleet data and probe data— making it harder to cut through the noise and identify actionable data that leads to optimal outcomes.

Given this challenge, SMATS helps tra ic operations, engineering and planning departments better manage tra ic flow to optimise transportation networks.

Delivered through the Cloud, the company’s iNode application ingests complex transportation data from di erent sources, eliminating redundancies and data conflicts, and then displays the insights in a variety of visual outputs that make it easy to take action.

Use cases include congestion monitoring, work zone management, origin destination analysis, tra ic studies, signal retiming and complete streets initiatives.

EU Green Deal needs place for ITS

European groups have expressed concern that a European Union move to decarbonise transportation does not take account of the ITS sector’s importance.

The EU’s Green Deal is underpinned in part by Taxonomy Regulation 2020/852, which seeks to establish a framework to facilitate sustainable investment. To do this it introduces so-called ‘technological screening criteria’ to define what an environmentally-sustainable

economic activity actually is.

But in a letter to the European Commission, Ertico - ITS Europe, the Conference of European Directors of Roads, toll association Asecap, the European Automobile Manufacturer’s Association, IRF Global and the DSRC Interest Group are worried that ITS has been left out.

Ertico CEO Joost Vantomme calls on the European Commission to take action: “We are convinced the Taxonomy Regulation requires a thorough

technical screening criterion that clearly reflects the importance that ITS and the

EU transport policy bear on the goal of the EU actions towards greening transport,” he writes.

Danlaw aims to improve school bus stop safety

V2X hardware manufacturer Danlaw will be demonstrating a real-world application of a connected school bus stop on the showroom floor at ITS World Congress Los Angeles this week.

Conducted by Michigan DOT, Operation Safe Stop observed school bus traffic over the course of a day and found that 508 motorists illegally passed a stopped school bus.

Coupled with the fact that there were 114 crashes over the past year in the state involving a school bus with its active lights turned on, it’s clear that automobile manufacturers and transit organisations can do more to keep students safe.

Danlaw’s demo will showcase how its connected vehicle technology can enhance the safety of students by enabling flashing smart signs and in-cabin alerts for surrounding drivers.

The connected school bus stop is one of the many available safety applications that can be handled through equipping infrastructure and vehicles with V2X equipment.
