omatsu is continuing to pursue possible alternative fuel options for its range of construction vehicles, but has yet to reach the development stage of the process.

The company remains committed to alternative fuels, said Komatsu North America chairman and CEO Rod Schrader and electrification was still a major initiative within the company. However, while

research into areas such as fuel cells was continuing: “We’re not in any development projects at this stage.”

The company has been a leader in electric-drive dump trucks in the mining sector, and introduced an electrical mini-excavator at bauma last year. It is continuing to look at multiple modes of power distribution. According to Schrader: “There’s not going to

be one size that fits all.”

The size of existing batteries remained a problem, added Rich Smith, vice-president of products and services. To have batteries sufficiently strong to power an excavator throughout the day would require a machine twice as big as current models.

Tsurumi Pump turns 40 in North America This year celebrating 40 years of trading in North America, Japan-headquartered Tsurumi Pump (Tsurumi) is enjoying strong US mining sector demand for its premium dewatering pumps.

Joe Ranieri, Tsurumi regional sales manager Midwest, said: “The mining market is thriving.

For the past five to six years it’s been incredible.

There’s also a lot of pump demand created by the big tunnelling projects going on around the country, in states including Indiana and Connecticut and cities such as St Louis. There’s a lot of water to pump out when you dig deep.

“We stock in the United States, so we have much shorter lead times. This really matters, especially in the mining and quarrying market when a customer’s pit is getting flooded and they need the pump now.”

Tsurumi’s line-up includes its best-selling HS and LB series portable pumps, as well as models equipped with agitators at the end of the motor shaft. Ideal for the construction industry, the agitators make the transmission of fluid and sand, sludge and slurry much easier and more efficient.

Komatsu continues search for viable alternative fuels

Equipment manufacturers K-Tec Earthmovers and Ashland Industries announced their merger at the show, describing the move as a good fit. Both firms are now owned by private equity company Owner Resource Group (ORG), which took a majority shareholding in K-Tec back in 2018 and has been looking to grow the firm since then.

The merger between the two earthmoving firms had been under discussion since August 2019 and closed in February.

“One of the ways to stimulate growth is through mergers and acquisitions,” explained K-Tec’s marketing vice president Shane Kroeker. “The company at the top of the list was Ashland Industries. Their products sit at the smaller end, so they fit really well with our product offering.”

The aim will be to use the two companies’ combined network of distributors to expand K-Tec and Ashland products into territories where they don’t currently have a strong presence. The new company will also be looking to grow overseas, says Kroeker, with Africa and Europe particular targets.

The merged operation will be headquartered in Rosenort, MB, Canada and led by Mikhail (Mike) Palitsky, president of K-Tec. The combined business will have manufacturing and service locations in both Rosenort, MB, Canada and Ashland, WI, US.

Mecalac sets its sights on North American market Mecalac, which produces compact machines for urban applications, is expanding rapidly in North America. In 2016 it had just one dealer, which had seen the manufacturer’s products at bauma and asked to distribute them.

Today it has dealers in 22 states, with 10 more states pending and two in Canada.

brand and focussing on the rental market,” says Peter Bigwood, general manager at Groupe Mecalac in North America, who joined the company in January this year from Brok, having previously worked for Atlas Copco for 20 years. Bigwood’s remit is to grow Mecalac’s business in North America. Through its global network of 250 distributors in 86 countries, Mecalac sells 5,000 machines a year, creating revenues

of €270m a year. The manufacturer has factories in France and Germany, Turkey and UK and nine offices in Europe, Turkey and the US. The 40-year-old, family-run firm, where father Henri Marchetta is chairman and son Alexandre is CEO, invests 5% of its revenues on research and development.

“We are all engineers,” said Henri Marchetta. “Innovation is a key word in our company.”

TRUST CREATES A COMPETITIVE EDGE FOR COMPANIES SAYS AUTODESK

Construction companies with the highest levels of trust perform significantly better on crucial business metrics than those that do not meet that standard, a new survey has found.

The study from construction software specialist Autodesk and management consultant FMI Corporation found that “very high” levels of trust within a company can equate to millions of dollars of additional extra profit – particularly valuable when margins in the sector are increasingly thin. However, only 37% of the 2,500 survey respondents classified their companies as having topranking levels of trust.

“We always knew that trust played a major role in the industry, but we didn’t know how much,” said Christine Acker of Autodesk’s product marketing department. “Trust isn’t unique to construction.

It’s core to it, but it’s always been regarded as a ‘nice to have’.”

There are clear benefits to achieving that top level of internal trust – characterised by factors such as transparency, good internal communication and a company philosophy that emphasises seeking solutions over allocating blame when things go wrong.

Benefits include more repeat business, better employee retention and higher levels of operational success, the survey found.

Jay Bowman, managing director of research at FMI noted that 57% of firms in the ‘very high’ trust category achieved a benchmark 80%-plus in terms of repeat business across their portfolios, compared with only 42% for firms with ‘above average’ trust levels. The highest trust organisations working with repeat clients could expect gross margins 2% to 7% higher than similarly sized companies with only ‘above average’ levels of trust, the survey suggests.

Sullair: Rental market driving compressor developments T he continuing shift from owned machines to rental fleets is driving changes in the air compressor market, according to manufacturer Sullair.

“When I started in the industry 30-plus years ago, the split was 20% rented to 80% owned by contractors; Now that is reversed,” says Rus Warner, vice president of rental and infrastructure sales and service for the Americas at Sullair. “Durability, flexibility and best-in-class serviceability are required by rental customers, in order to optimise their return on investment,” he added.

The rental sector is also demanding telematics, such as Sullair’s AirLinx system, says Warner. Larger companies already use telematics extensively, with smaller players likely to follow suit.

environmentally responsible equipment says Sullair. In response, the manufacturer has made adaptations such as the addition of a “containment” system able to catch any spills

from a machine and the ability to evaporate condensate – rather than relying on the operator to responsibly dispose of the liquid which contains traces of oil.

Parent company Hitachi has helped develop Sullair’s expertise around oil-free compressors too. “We have a full line of electric-powered machines and a diesel-powered machine as well,” says Warner.

This range of options “will continue to grow as oil-free becomes the standard.”

Hitachi Group, which acquired Sullair in April 2017 in order to gain a position in the North American market, is investing in its US operations.

A $30m expansion at Sullair’s Michigan City facility is underway together with upgrades to its existing plant.

GIVE YOUR COMPANY’S TECH PIONEERS SPACE AND DIRECTION IF YOU WANT TO FLOURISH Technology should not be introduced for its own sake and a company’s “tech pioneers” should be given the necessary time to bring projects to fruition, said Brad Boehler, formerly of Skyjack.

Speaking on “Gaining competitive advantage through construction technology,” Boehler told delegates that new technology, “…is most successful when it’s aimed at solving a problem, not just because it’s new and is used for the sake of innovation”.

Boehler, former president of access machine specialist Skyjack, said that innovation was essential, as the same old thinking produced the same old results.

However, it was important that certain criteria were observed for new technology to be effectively introduced.

Staff had to be empowered and able to communicate easily with each other when new technology or processes were introduced, for example, he said.

And efficiency had to be driven into every aspect of the business, every day. In the construction sector, this could include connected equipment, which was increasingly appearing on the market with built-in intelligence and sensing abilities. Telematics, for instance, was not about telling a company where a machine was, but how effectively or efficiently it was working.

Equipment manufacturing creates 2.8 million jobs, AEM report states Equipment manufacturing in the US provides 2.8 million jobs and $791 billion in sales activity each year, according to a report released by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).

Manufacturing associated with the construction, mining and agriculture industries has an enormous impact on the US economy, according to the report. The equipment manufacturing industry also contributes $288

billion to GDP annually and provides $53.7 billion annually in federal, state and local taxes.

The total number of direct jobs supported by equipment manufacturers is over 476,800.

Texas ranks substantially above all other states in terms of direct contributions of the equipment manufacturing industry, with over 73,057 jobs, $7.5 billion of labour income and $13.2 billion in value added in GDP each year.

China construction equipment companies target US Chinese equipment manufacturers are outlining their plans to expand in the US market. The China Construction Machinery Association (CCMA) says that nine Chinese companies were ranked in the top 50 global construction equipment manufacturers in 2019.

Dick Cai, president and CEO of the US operation of Sunward Equipment, said that localising support in parts and services is critical for success in markets such as the US. “It’s a very challenging time in our industry,” said Cai. “We have been in the US for seven years, and last year we established our new US headquarters in Dallas, Texas.”

Sales of Chinese construction machinery exceeded US$94.87 billion (RMB660 billion) in 2019, according to a report published by the CCMA and the CCCME (China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products). The export value of Chinese construction machinery totalled US$24.2 billion last year, a growth of 3% with a trade surplus of US$20.3 billion. Cai was bullish about the future prospects for Chinese manufacturers in the US. “We are behind you guys in America but not for much longer,” he said. “We are going to catch up and we are going to be great.” www.cncma.org

Paveology Tech brings expertise T here was a time when concrete paving expertise was everywhere … on every project. That began to change about five years ago, as many industry experts retired, and the next generation was slow to join the trades and become skilled professionals.

Paveology Tech’s goal is to fill the knowledge gap that now often exists on concrete paving jobsites. The company sends experts to the jobs and addresses a variety of project management and coordination issues – including calibration, start-up, equipment troubleshooting, repair and maintenance.

“Some basic knowledge might be there,” said Chad Barnes, chief operating officer of Paveology. “There are just pieces missing, and putting it all together – the layout of the job, the setting of the equipment, how the operation all blends together – that’s where we come in.”

Contractors working on challenging jobs, such as airports or interstates, are Paveology’s main customers.

Manufacturers offer their own training, but sometimes they too struggle as experts leave the industry – leading them to turn to Paveology for help.

Stressed-out contractors turn to Barnes, asking him to fly in his company’s expertise as quickly as possible.

Yet another opportunity is groups of contractors who combine efforts in order to bid on the largest projects. On these jobsites, Paveology helps create teams and organise the varied groups.

Barnes has decades of concrete paving experience. He also utilises some of the experts who have retired to help provide knowledge on the jobsites: “They like to do a project for three weeks or so,” he said.

The Ray trials smart highway technology - live Over the past three years, more than 10 new smart technologies have been installed on an 29km stretch of Interstate 85 in Georgia.

This is The Ray, infrastructure’s first publicprivate-philanthropicpartnership (P4) which aims to improve sustainability, safety and the environment for roads and transportation.

“Trying new things is hard, particularly on highways and interstates, because of the risks involved. My job is to mitigate those risks,” said Allie Kelly, executive director of The Ray, whose partners include the US’s Federal Highways Administration, the Georgia Department of Transportation, the Ray C. Anderson Foundation, research 10

organisations and private sector companies. “Any of these technologies that perform and succeed here, we aim to scale to other parts of the country and other parts of the world.”

autonomous vehicles; solar roadways from Hannah Solar and Wattway; and dynamic tyre checking from WheelRight.

Panasonic is working with The Ray to build a digital platform for managing connected vehicle data. As well as analysing a host of connected vehicle data to prevent accidents and incidents, this will also be the key to pay-per-use road charging, says Kelly.

“This means we can have people contribute to transportation maintenance based on how much they use the road system,” said Kelly.

“Right now, our state DoTs [departments of transport] are reliant on gas tax. As we have more electric vehicles, funding from gas tax will fall.” www.theray.org

ntelligent compaction and thermal profiling are improving technologies that have their best days ahead of them, a compaction expert told a gathering at CONEXPOCON/AGG 2020.

“The real gains can be made when we tie intelligent compaction and thermal profiling together,” said Tim Kowalski, application support manager for Hamm, a division of Wirtgen America. “Then the paver can see what the roller is doing, and the roller can see what the paver is doing.”

Leading the presentation entitled, ‘Using New Technology in Asphalt Paving’, Kowalski said one key aspect

of thermal profiling is analysing temperatures and exploring how they impact paving quality. “To improve quality, we needed to understand segregation,” Kowalski said.

While intelligent compaction (IC) has many definitions, it ultimately involves using technology and data to improve compaction and quality.

The profiling efforts began in earnest in about 2009, with the use of thermal imaging cameras.

“It gave us some great data,” Kowalski said.

That data leaped forward about five years later when scanners replaced cameras.

“Scanners are more accurate and not as cumbersome,” which

translates into more widespread use, Kowalski said.

Thermal profiling today can incorporate the temperature of the road before paving, the speed and direction of wind, humidity and other factors.

Both profiling and IC technologies have grown, and they can be merged to provide a complete picture – from the temperature of the mix that arrives, to cooling windows, to the mat left behind the paver and eventually the compaction processes that follow.

If the technologies are coordinated, rollers can anticipate issues and adjust.

IC also ensures the rolling can

be recalibrated as needed. It enables tracking procedures as well.

Equally important, is off-site data analysis to track what paving and compaction processes, including rolling patterns, worked best. So reliable is this data that some states are removing specifications as long as IC is properly implemented.

The use of IC and thermal profiling continues to grow.

In 2004, three states were utilising one of the technologies, compared to 33 states in 2019.

In 2020, more than 800 state transportation projects across the US are expected to use IC and/or thermal profiling.

Rubble Master plans North American expansion Crushing and screening equipment specialist Rubble Master is looking to strengthen its position in North America with the appointment of a general manager for the region, Jackson Macadam, and the establishment of a hub there. The company now has a parts depot in Memphis, Tennessee, and is growing its North American team.

“We formed a platform here over the past 20 years, establishing our brand and becoming one of the players in the industry,” said Rubble Master president Gerald Hanisch. “We see much better potential in the US. With the addition of screens, we can really show the industry that we are there.”

Rubble Master acquired NorthernIreland screen manufacturer Maximus in 2018, with the intent of growing in the US and Canada. “We are now a full-service provider,” said Jackson, who joined Rubble Master in September 2019 from an international career with Caterpillar, adding: “We have got a lot of work to do.”

One of the first companies to buy a Rubble Master machine 20 years ago, which then went on to become Rubble Master’s first dealer, was Elms Equipment Rental, based in Brawley, California. “They are constantly developing new products and improving the machines,” said Alan D Huber, president of Elms Equipment, of Rubble Master. “The fit and finish of the machine is the best in the world.”

As recycling and the circular economy moves up the agenda in several US states, the market is growing, said Huber, although there are still barriers to overcome.

“California likes to think that it’s at the leading edge with recycling, but there has been a lot of resistance, even here, around acceptance of the material and also where you can use the machines.” www.rubblemaster.com

Caterpillar has developed the Cat Command for Compaction system, featuring new automation tools that enhance operator assistance and help contractors deliver high-quality working. Caterpillar is making the system available on certain machines in the firm’s soil compaction range, initially in North America but also in Europe shortly, with other markets following in due course. The package offers a semi-automatic compaction tool, using a touchscreen in the cab for control. When using the system, the operator first drives the machine around the working area to map the boundaries of the ground to be compacted and then enters the required compaction parameters using the touchscreen. The operator can then put the machine in the auto setting and the system will control the drive, steering and vibration parameters as the compactor moves around the preset working area. The system also saves information from jobs carried out previously, which can be accessed through the touchscreen.

For safety, an integrated object detection system alerts the operator if an object is in the way. To optimise quality, the operator can switch the exciter system off when passing over ground that cannot be compacted using vibration, and then re-engage the automatic control system once the area has been passed.

New features for John Deere’s latest L Series John Deere says its latest L Series wheeled loaders bring new levels of versatility and performance. The 444L, 644L, 644L Hybrid and 724L models all feature improvements such as redesigned Z-Bar linkages, ergonomic cabs and electrohydraulic (EH) controls.

Visibility to the front has been improved due to the reconfigured Z-bar linkage, while the improved parallel lift boosts load levelling throughout the raise cycle. The 724L also offers increased clearance heights for dumping into hoppers or trucks.

The EH functionality allows the operator to select how abruptly the bucket or boom stops and also to adjust hydraulic flow. A bucket vibrate feature allows efficient dumping or sprinkling of loose material.

The EH precision mode allows for fine control when placing objects and the operator can also store settings for up to 10 different attachments in the monitor. In addition, the new constant auxiliary flow function allows the operator to continuously run attachments without having to hold a lever or roller.

Caterpillar’s new D3 and D7 dozers offer increased productivity

CATERPILLAR’S IMPROVED DOZERS C aterpillar claims increased productivity for its upgraded D3 and D7 bulldozers. Both machines have been reconfigured to boost output over the models that they replace.

The D7 features a return to Caterpillar’s trademark high-drive design and is said to shift up to 8% more material/hour than the earlier D7E. Machine weight has been increased by 6% to 29.8tonnes while engine power has been increased by 12% to 197kW at 2,200rpm. The C9.3B diesel

also meets the Tier 4 Final/Stage V emissions requirements and can run on B20 biodiesel, while it drives through a fully automatic four-speed transmission.

LEEBOY UNVEILS NEW ASPHALT PAVER L

eeBoy has taken the wraps off its all-new 8530 paver, as well as the upgraded 8516D and 8520B models.

Power for the 8530 comes from a Tier 4 Final compliant Kubota diesel rated at 93kW, running at 1,900rpm for working use.

The machine is fitted with the HD Pro screed featuring electric heating, and which offers paving widths of 2.44-4.72m (8’-15’6”).

A key feature of the machine is the way its access for maintenance has been improved over earlier models from the firm. Previously, the flight chain adjustment, hydraulic tanks and generator, for example, were located under the hopper on previous generation LeeBoy pavers. This meant maintenance to any of these items required

unbolting the hopper and lifting it off to provide access. These items have now been moved to the deck, with the fuel tank, an item rarely requiring maintenance, now located under the hopper instead. The fuel tank offers a 133litre capacity, which a spokesperson for the firm said, “…gives you more than a day’s shift.”

LeeBoy has also upgraded its 8616D and 8520B paver models. These share the improved maintenance access of the new 8530, with the fuel tanks now relocated under the hoppers, while the hydraulics and generators are on the deck with the engine. Both machines also benefit from Tier 4 Final compliant Kubota diesels, rated at 79kW for the smaller 8616D and 93kW for the 8520B.

As with the 8530, the 8520B is equipped with the HD Pro screed, offering paving widths of 2.44-4.72m (8’-15’6”). Another important feature of the 8520B is its hydraulically extendable push roller system, which allows the machine to work with different sizes of tipper trucks.

Meanwhile, all three machines can be equipped with 2D grade control technology from Topcon Positioning.

oadtec’s RX 405e and RX 505e milling machines offer higher performance outputs than the models they replace. The RX 405e weighs in at 20.4tonnes, with power from a 321kW Cummins diesel meeting Tier 4 Final/Stage V

emissions requirements. The machine can be used for milling widths from 600-1.5m, using the firm’s new variable cutting system (VCS). This feature allows the user to open the side of the cutter drum and change the drum. Kyle Hammon,

product manager for mills and stabilisers said: “Changing the drums takes 1-2 hours.”

For safety, a drum drive belt lift system prevents the drum drive from engaging while the machine is in maintenance mode.

The cutter drum is centrally mounted and the machine uses a belt drive instead of the hydrostatic drive used before.

According to Hammon, these changes allow the new model to be more production focused now. The new cutter and drum configuration also allow the machine to cut a full 330mm depth, allowing it to mill down to the base layer and ensure that any reflex cracking is properly removed when carrying out road repairs. The more powerful RX 505e weighs in at 24.9tonnes and shares many of the same features, such as the VCS and drum drive belt lift system.

Power for the RX 505e comes from a Cummins QSX15 diesel rated at 466kW, which meets Tier 4 Final/Stage V emissions requirements. Hammon added that the RX 505e competes in the market for a ½-lane milling machine, while it benefits from an output conveyor with a 60° swing. www.roadtec.com

High-efficiency asphalt compaction Hamm says that its HD+90iPHVO asphalt compactor offers both versatility and finish quality for customers. The machine features an oscillation drum, suiting it to use compacting bridge decks or in urban projects close to buildings.

The oscillation type compactor does not transmit resonances over even short distances, allowing this system to be used where conventional compactors using vibration could cause damage. Using oscillation also allows compaction to specification, without risking over-compaction and the associated problem of fragmented aggregate.

Ammann is offering a new continuous plant designed for the North American market

mmann claims that its ACP 300 ContiHRT continuous asphalt plant offers high-quality production.

Designed to meet the needs of the North American market, the ContiHRT is capable of producing high-quality mix with more than 60% recycled asphalt (RAP). The new plant features Ammann’s novel recycling technology, already proven worldwide, which maximises RAP utilisation and meets the world’s most stringent emissions guidelines.

The gentle pre-heating of the RAP, compared to traditional cold feed to superheated virgin aggregates, prevents thermal stress on the asphalt concrete (AC) content and ensures a highly homogenous final mix.

That process also minimises

fuel burn and reduces the levels of CO2 and other pollutants.

The plant incorporates a RAP dryer for the addition of recycled materials and a separate cold recycling feed. The plant is capable of incorporating shingles, liquid additives, fibre granulate and foam AC. It can access a recycling system for RAP utilisation up to 60%; a separate cold recycling system for 30%; or a combination of the two. The ACP 300 ContiHRT can also produce high amounts of mix without any RAP. Warm mix can be produced with or without RAP. Continuous production capacity is 300tonnes/hour.

The system utilises proven technology and is also said to address the need to

reduce emissions. Additional plant innovations include the proprietary as1 Control System. This advanced system provides data that enables high production while optimising the use of fuel and aggregates.

Productive pneumatic According to Dynapac, its CP1200W rubber tyred compactor offers a combination of productivity and versatility. The machine shares many design features with the smaller CP1200 model from the firm. However, the new CP1200W offers a working width of 2,008mm, compared with 1,725mm for the existing CP1200. The firm has fitted this new model with wider tyres.

Like the CP1200, the new CP1200W features Dynapac’s novel Modular Ballast System, which utilises sealed ballast containers. According to the firm, this allows exact visual control of wheel loads. The CP1200W can be used in a variety of applications such as compacting base, sub-base and stabilised soil. However, its main duty is for final compaction of asphalt for sealing purposes.

FAE’s versatile, revamped MTH 225 FAE has updated its heavyweight, multitask attachment with improvements to its mechanism for controlling drilling depth and its water injection system. The MTH 225 can be used in highway applications such as soil stabilisation, milling thin top layers of road surface or crushing an entire depth of asphalt to turn it into road base. “It can do stones, rocks, asphalt; it can mix. It can do a little bit of everything,” said FAE product manager Lee Smith.

It provides a useful tool for treating materials in situ, said contractor John DeLuca of A DeLuca Paving, who has trialled the machine. “In New Jersey, we have problems getting rid of old asphalt, it’s expensive to do, so we want to take materials that are already

in situ and improve them, using cement as binders.”

With a drilling depth that ranges between 340mm and 500mm, the MTH 225 has counter blades which the operator can adjust in order to control the size of the material being crushed. “With this machine we can shred the asphalt and improve the gradation,” said Deluca.

The improved automatic water system is important for applications such as soil stabilisation where lime cement and water are mixed with the ground to improve its strength.

“When you are doing soil cement, you need to be precise with the dosage of water in order to meet the specification,” according to DeLuca.

irtgen is offering a highly productive road recycling machine in the shape of its new W 380 Cri model. According to Mark Stahl, director recycling products for Wirtgen America: “It’s designed for recycling.”

The machine offers improved performance over earlier designs, with a new delivery system for the drum that is said to be more efficient.

The machine drives the tanker truck in front using a pushbar.

The machine also features an MCS system that allows the user to change the cutter drum quickly. Although it can recycle a 3.8m-wide strip as standard, changing the drum allows the machine to recycle widths of 2.5m or 3.2m.

The machine uses an upcutting motion. The redesigned cutter drum means that the machine can recycle a road to a depth of 330mm, allowing it to reach the road base material and remove any reflective

cracking that may have spread through the asphalt layer.

It can also be used for milling by running it in the opposite direction, providing the necessary up-cutting action.

Improved concrete slipforming Power Curbers is improving the performance of its well-proven 5700 slipformer with the addition of new capabilities. The new 5700-D model replaces the earlier 5700-C and comes with an array of

extra functions that help to boost its versatility in slipforming duties.

As with the earlier 5700 variants, the new 5700-D model can be used in a wide range of kerbing, walkway, highway barrier, ditching, paving and tunnelling applications.

The machine retains its compact size, simple design, easy operation and high productivity of the earlier variants.

The operator can keep track of engine performance more easily with the installation of a new engine display that replaces the series of gauges on the earlier model. Operator comfort has been improved due to a new cold air dam between the engine and console to ensure better cooling.

Ammann claims that its latest ARX 16, ARX 26-2 and ARX 45-2 T4 Final compact tandem rollers are highly versatile. The machines benefit from drums that can quickly be adjusted from in-line to off-set configurations, for working near obstructions. The ARX 16 is left and right side support-free.

Compactors that are off-set are able to work close to kerbs and other obstructions. Operators need watch only one drum, knowing the second will be a safe distance from the obstruction. The in-line setting, which enables equal distribution of compaction forces, is preferred on more open jobsites.

The adjustment between in-line and off-set configurations is done manually and is said to be easy for operators to make. The articulating joint, which makes the in-line/ off-set adjustment possible, is also said to be maintenance-free.

The rollers are powered by Kubota engines that meet Tier 4 Final and Stage V emissions standards. The machines also feature a number of design upgrades, including a redesign of the front and rear for improved comfort and visibility. Weights range from 1.4-4.5tonnes.

Available on the machines is ACEforce, Ammann’s proprietary Intelligent Compaction system.

oadtec has improved its highly successful Shuttle Buggy with the introduction of the new SB3000 model, which replaces the earlier SB2500. As the name suggests, capacity has been increased and it can offer a capacity of up to 27tonnes in all.

A spokesperson for the firm said, “We spoke to customers

and there were three key areas we needed to improve: user experience and safety, transportability and jobsite performance.”

One key change has been to relocate the engine at ground level, allowing better access for maintenance. The Cummins B6.7 diesel delivers 231kW and meets the Tier 4 Final/Stage V

emissions requirements.

However, the spokesperson commented, “Getting the engine at ground level was a big challenge.”

CMI premieres new asphalt plant CMI has unveiled its new and upgraded Cedarapids Magnum 250 counterflow drum-mix asphalt plant, a highly portable machine that can produce 250tonnes/hour of asphalt and offer users a 35% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) recycling capability. New upgrades on the Magnum 250 include high efficiency drying and

erman firm Vögele is now offering its sophisticated software-based application, WITOS Paving Docu, in North America.

The firm says that this sophisticated package has been designed specifically for contractors that want to capture and analyse more data than just the paving temperature.

However, this package does not offer the full capabilities of the firm’s even more sophisticated WITOS Paving Plus system, which includes process

optimisation with integrated pre-planning.

Using the WITOS Paving Docu package allows contractors to optimise paving processes, reducing costs while boosting productivity and paving quality. Users can cut material wastage while ensuring paving operations are carried out closely to specification.

Data is downloaded from machines across the fleet in real time. This can include trucks delivering asphalt loads, so that material supply

scheduling can be optimised.

Loads can also be tracked to monitor quality of each batch and to ensure deliveries are within the optimum temperature range. Heat imaging tools on the equipment can record mat temperature after passing through screed, while compaction data can also be added.

Cost and speed of placement are two of the factors behind the increasing popularity of roller compacted concrete (RCC), conference attendees at CONEXPOCON/AGG 2020 were told. However, despite the material’s benefits, users have to work carefully to maximise the material’s benefits, said Wayne Adaska, director, pavements and geotechnical markets, Portland Cement Association.

Speed of laying is one factor behind the material’s renaissance: “When putting down asphalt you’re putting down one to one-and-ahalf-inch layers, but with RCC you can use eight to nine-inch layers. And you can get traffic on it within 24 hours … in most cases,” Adaska said.

However, he added, it’s equally important to take into consideration factors such as client expectations, aggregate selection and good compaction.

In terms of client expectations, RCC’s pale colouration meant that any imperfections showed up more readily than those in dark asphalt … so it is important that customers are made aware in advance of how it will appear.

Mixing in smaller aggregate with a maximum size of a half-inch (c.12mm) - compared to traditional three-quarter inch (c.18mm) aggregate – can help by giving a tighter surface.

Improved paving technology Dynapac is offering an improved material transfer vehicle, as well as a new high production screed system.

The firm’s proven MF2500 feeder now benefits from the sophisticated IMIX technology.

This system is claimed to eliminate both material segregation and heat segregation in the mix. The MF2500CS is also now available with the newly developed 1m SW6500 swing app conveyor for long side reach while paving over barriers and inline or echelon paving applications.

In addition, the MF2500CS feeder offers high productivity of up to 4,000tonnes/hour and versatility as it can be used for multiple materials. It also offers low total cost of operation, with around 60-70% fewer wear 22

new asphalt compactor featuring oscillation is being added to the Dynapac product range. The new CO5200 VI is a doubledrum asphalt roller with oscillation that is said to provide 100% ground contact and limit the risk of damage to nearby structures from heavy vibration.

The CO5200 VI is equipped with a 1950mm oscillation drum made of Hardox 450 steel that is highly wear-resistant and carries a seven-year, 7500-hour drum shell warranty. The machine shares many technical features with Dynapac’s CO4200 VI model.

The crawlermounted, hydraulic tophead-drive rig is said to offer faster holeto-hole drilling and a lower cost per tonne through single-pass capability. Indeco’s IMP 25 has superior bite for primary demolition tasks

Swedish remote-controlled demolition robot specialist Brokk has introduced a new water mist system designed to produce droplets fine enough to trap silica dust particles.

While misting systems to suppress dust have been around for years, Brokk says that it believes the new Atomized Water Mist system is the only one to be US Occupational Health and Safety Administration-compliant for dealing with silica dust.

“Silica dust remained a concern because it is difficult to contain,” said Martin Krupicka, president and CEO of the Brokk Group.

The problem stems from the size of the water droplets in existing misters, which are much larger than the silica dust they are meant to trap, says Brokk. Silica particles range from 0.1 to 1,000 microns while traditional methods produce water droplets that are 200 to 1,000 microns in size.

The size and velocity of these larger droplets cause air and silica particles to flow around them in a phenomenon known as the slipstream effect. The silica can then still be breathed in by workers.

MECALAC LAUNCHES NEXT-GENERATION IN NA M

ecalac is launching its range of nextgeneration MCR compact excavators to the North American market. The revamped MCR range has a new, wider cab, a completely new user interface and a new body design.

“We launched the MCR concept in the US back in 2017 – one machine that can

dig, load, handle pallets and be used as a tool holder – and the acceptance was really fantastic,” said Patrick Brehmer, head of marketing, product management and design at Mecalac. “People had never seen it before, but immediately they understood the benefits.”

Mecalac has designed its MCRs so that they are compact at both the rear and the front.

They can also drive at twice the speed of a standard tracked excavator, 10km/h, allowing them to move round the jobsite faster. The MCR series excavators can also be used as loaders, using skid or loader buckets in the reversed position to move larger volumes. The bucket is supported against the blade so that the force of the thrust is transmitted directly

from the undercarriage to the bucket. The excavators feature Mecalac’s patented boom which folds backwards at 130o, acting as a counterweight to provide stability. This allows them to lift 40% of their own weight.

Indeco’s lightweight tools extend smaller contractors’ reach Indeco has launched two new lightweight attachments aimed at smaller contractors: the ISS 5/7 shear and the HP 80 FS hammer.

The ISS 5/7 is a smaller hydraulic demolition shear, designed for improved manoeuvrability and productivity.

At 1.7m long with a jaw width of 340mm, the attachment weighs in at 481kg.

Takeuchi-US has developed a fully electric excavator, the TB220e, which it aims to launch in September 2020. According to the manufacturer, the machine can operate for an eight-hour shift under normal operation – or around 65% load – from one charge.

The TB220e, which is comparable to Takeuchi’s TB216 diesel model, has two charging options to give it greater versatility.

It can charge slowly overnight at 220V, or swiftly at 483V. The battery will last for 3,000 charge cycles which means that it should

outlast the machine itself, said Takeuchi product manager Lee Padgett.

A fully electric machine has the benefit of no, or low, fuel costs, no need for oil changes and hence less maintenance costs.

John Deere tracked loader’s new solutions The construction industry is being hit hard with serious problems including a shortage of machine operators and the need to maximise both finish quality and working productivity.

ullair has launched its next-generation 1600H Tier 4 Final portable air compressor with changes aimed to make it easier to maintain and more environmentally friendly.

To make access to the inside of the machine easier, Sullair has removed a central post between two service doors, as well as adding push-toclose latches. Aftercooled and filtered models have an added condensate evaporation system

which reuses heat from the compressor’s exhaust.

Previous versions required operators to empty condensate, which contains traces of oil, risking contamination in the event that liquid was not responsibly disposed of.

The new 1600H compressor is available in three Tier 4 Final emissions-compliant, diesel engines: Caterpillar C15, Perkins 2506J and Cummins QSX15. All three options deliver 755litres per second at

7 to 10 bar through a Sullair 25-Series air end.

Electrifying – the Case 580 EV CASE has unveiled its new fully electric 580 EV backhoe loader and has delivered the first two production models to the US east coast.

The 580 EV is also part of the company’s alternative propulsion strategy, according to Hubertus Mulhauser, chief executive of CNH Industrial, parent of CASE Construction Equipment. “The world of diesel will come to an end in 10, 15 or 20 years,” he said. “Diesel will be replaced by different forms of propulsion.”

According to the company’s executive vice president Bryn Fosburgh, before the year 2000 contractors typically increased productivity simply by scaling up the size of the equipment being used onsite. Bigger was better: “In the past we used scale to get over the problem. Now we look at technology on and off the machine to get that productivity.”

The results of this trend have been substantial.

Using technology has increased productivity by 130% and has also resulted in 50% less reworking.

But the technology itself has faced barriers.

In addition to Topcon’s Automatic Excavator system, upgrades are now available for the Sitelink3D jobsite monitoring and management system. This includes a pay-as-you go pointbased service model. It also includes a Haul Truck app, giving contractors more visibility into workflow management and the flexibility to use it in the way that best fits their operation.

Different operating systems have been hard to integrate until recently, meaning that data has been hard to access and use effectively.

“How do we allow visibility across the site?”

Fosburgh said. “The operating system takes data from Trimble technology and other systems. We merge that with digital assets to produce dynamic scheduling and management tools, and we create other applications to meet (our clients’) needs … and these clients can be using Apple or Windows.

This eliminates the remodelling construction firms typically carry out to generate cost estimates. Efficient payload data The latest solution from Trimble’s Loadrite business offers increased efficiency for materials haulage operations on quarry sites.

The Smart Haul solution means that electronic payload ‘tickets’ generated by loading machines such as wheeled loaders or excavators are automatically shared to the trucks as the material is hauled away. The site manager can see in real time where each truck is carrying every load and whether it is going to the crusher or a dump pile, for example.

Drilling down into the data can reveal truck productivity and the system will also provide machine health data on each item of equipment. The mapper logs temperature readings behind the paver as the paving is in progress. It then provides a visualisation to the operator in real time of

One advanced tool offers tiltrotator functionality, which allows operators using excavators with automatic control functions to swivel or tilt the bucket, while providing automatic boom control for faster and more efficient excavation.

“If excavator operators are in situations such as at the top of the slope, grading a long incline and not totally perpendicularly lined up, positioning the cutting edge of the bucket to the surface is now more easily attainable with the tiltrotator functionality,” said Murray Lodge, senior VP of construction.

Compact machine control solution Topcon Positioning is now offering machine control solutions for compact equipment. Kohler’s K-HEM 2504 uses diesel and electric engines in parallel

Kohler has launched two new hybrid engines which combine diesel and electric power in parallel: the K-HEM 2504 and the K-Hem 1003. The idea behind the combination is to provide the bulk of the power from the diesel engine, with the electric motor kicking in when peaks are required.

“That allows for a smaller engine to be used where currently a larger one is needed,” explains Jeffrey Wilke, product manager for Kohler Engines. “That means that in some applications there will be savings in fuel and reduced noise.”

Kohler has chosen the size of the diesel engines in the two hybrids to fall just below two thresholds. The K-HEM 1003 sits just below 19kW, the limit required for Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) under Stage V Legislation.

The K-HEM 2504 sits below the limit at which Stage V legislation requires Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

The K-HEM 2504 combines a KDI 2504TCR 55.4kW diesel engine that complies with Stage V legislation and is without SCR, and a 48V electric motor that guarantees 19.5kW peak power and 9kW continued power and does not exceed safe voltage levels. The electric motor charges from the diesel one when not in use.

According to the firm, hydrogen fuel cells suit large construction machines because they offer a greater power density than batteries. The firm also believes that hydrogen fuel cells also offer the ability to upscale machines with ease…and can do it far better than all-electric machines powered by lithium batteries.

A fuel cell works by producing electricity from the chemical reaction between hydrogen and

oxygen. The electricity generated then becomes the power source. Since the only resulting emission is water vapour, this makes it a very clean fuel enabling manufacturers like Hyundai to meet the toughest possible air pollution requirements.

HCE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the joint development of hydrogen fuel cell construction equipment with Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Mobis at its Mabuk Research Center in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do. This will see the three companies developing medium/large-capacity excavators (as well as forklifts) featuring fuel cell power units.

DEUTZ provides power for emissions-free telehandler DEUTZ, together with JLG, has developed a zero emissions electric drive system for a compact telehandler. E-DEUTZ, a division of DEUTZ, is providing the power for the JLG G5-18A. In addition to zero emissions, the electric power system provides reduced sound levels, instant available torque and less reliance on hydraulic fluids.

“It’s a great fit for mining, municipalities and anywhere else emissions and noise are an issue,” said Leo Stapper, application engineer at DEUTZ. “The lack of emissions also makes it ideal for indoor work.”

The compact, 360V drive system uses a split drive comprising two 40kW electric motors – one for driving and one 42

for the hydraulics in the telescopic arm. As is typical for electric engines, the system delivers instant torque. The battery is from the E-DEUTZ modular toolbox

and offers 42kWh of capacity.

The 6.6kW charging system can restore the battery level to 80% within four hours.

Kohler’s new PCV680LE Kohler has launched the PCV680LE low emission engine, adding to its Command PRO EFI (electronic fuel injection) range. The twin-cylinder, vertical-shaft engine runs on liquid propane (LP) and has a catalyst in its muffler … the unit offers users a “complete solution,” says the manufacturer.

“This [development] significantly lowers the carbon monoxide exhaust which means they can be use in equipment in confined spaces,” said Benjamin Marotz, marketing manager for Kohler Engines.

Although low emission LP engines have been on the market for years, previous solutions involved adding a kit to a standard engine. “It’s been a real struggle for customers because when they have had issues with the engines, they didn’t know where to go,” said Marotz. “Now we are supplying a complete solution from our factory.”

ontinental is unveiling its new Generation 3 construction truck tyres for on/off-road or mixed use.

The Conti HSC 3 steer/ all-position tyre, Conti HDC 3 drive tyre and Conti HAC 3 allposition tyre are said to deliver key benefits for on/off-road applications including, among others, construction and cement truck work.

Continental claims that the tyres deliver high performance in mileage, durability, traction and retreadability, the key aspects for lowest overall driving cost in the on/off-road segment. Alliance Tire Americas unveils Galaxy Mighty Trac ND skid steer tyre A new product from Alliance Tire Americas will enable skid steer loaders to run year-round, and on all materials, without changing tyres. “It’s built for all surfaces, including snow,” Ryan Lopes, ATA national product manager, said of the new Galaxy Mighty Track ND skid steer tyre. The design helps it perform on hard surfaces, loose materials, mud, rock and snow.

The tyre has grooves called sipes that help it grip in snow. “Skid steer loaders don’t have snow tyres now,” Lopes said. Chains are the only option in colder climates.

BKT debuts Earthmax tyre for RDTs BKT has globally launched the Earthmax SR 452 off the road (OTR) tyre that is suited to rigid dump trucks (RDTs) hauling loads over long distances.

The Indian manufacturer says the tyre is targeted at operators in aggregates, mining and sand who require long-distance capability, enhanced traction and stability in uneven terrain, and excellent manoeuvrability.

It adds that the deep tread of the tyre (class E-4) along with a unique tread design and a squared shoulder stand enable excellent handling in addition to minimising vibration and noise.
