olvo Penta is embarking on its first industrial OEM electromobility partnership, while sister company Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is rolling out a range of zero-emissions site equipment.

Volvo Penta has signed its first agreement to design and deliver an electric driveline for an industrial OEM. For Volvo Penta, the project represents an opportunity to demonstrate and further develop its electromobility platform in a prestigious and demanding application.

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) earlier unveiled two zero-emissions machines, the ECR25 excavator and L25 wheeled loader, from its new range of electric compact machines.

“We’re looking at what’s actually available in the Group and then modifying those components for our customers,” said Christer Hedström, Volvo Penta’s director of product planning. “We’re working to make this driveline to fit our OEMs or our customers. We have different customers that we’re looking at, to fit that into their machines.”

EVOQUIP HAS NEW INTERNATIONAL SALES DIRECTOR EvoQuip has appointed Barry O’Hare as its new international sales director.

O’Hare has a wealth of experience in the crushing and screening industry, having worked in a variety of positions for Powerscreen and Terex Minerals Processing Systems (Terex MPS) over the past 11 years, most recently as a Powerscreen regional sales manager.

Through his new role at the Northern Irelandheadquartered compact crushing and screening equipment manufacturer, O’Hare will be responsible for leading the strategic and operational sales activities for EvoQuip, in all markets excluding North America.

He will also lead globally on a range of sales supporting responsibilities, including developing and managing territory sales.

Keestrack investing in global manufacturing sites W

hile celebrating its 10,000th crushing and screening production plant since the 4518 introduced in 1996, Keestrack is busy developing its worldwide manufacturing capacities.

The Belgian aggregates process plant manufacturer recently staged the official opening of a new 8,740m² assembly complex, marking the second extension phase of its main factory in Šternberk, Czech Republic. This year will also include the opening of Keestrack’s Indian plant assembly site in Neemrana and the start of work on additional production capacity at Keestrack Italy’s base in Ponzano, around 30km north of Venice.

Targeting 60% revenue growth on its current €120 million annual turnover by 2022, Keestrack invested early in modern, fully automated manufacturing technologies, such as plasma cutting, to guarantee fast and flexible internal supply of key components. In 2009, Keestrack (Keestrack CZ) introduced an anti-corrosive zinc phosphate nano powder painting line in Šternberk providing a high-

quality long-lasting finish of frame components and other plant key structures.

In 2014 Keestrack management decided to launch a mid-term development programme to expand the capacities at Šternberk. The first of three planned steps was adding a modern 5,000m² factory in 2016 for steel construction, additional to the existing 8,000m² halls. This has significantly improved raw material logistics. Operational since September 2018 and marking the second phase of the programme has been the addition

of the 8,740m² complex to accommodate parts storage and four separate assembly lines for screeners and crushers.

Both Šternberk projects, totalling an investment of €6 million since 2015, offer a stateof-the-art working environment at the 480-employee strong Keestrack CZ factory site. The site’s optimised production processes are said by Keestrack to have improved the workflow and significantly reduced lead times for components and complete plants.

As an example, Keestrack CZ now has a four-cycle line production process for its medium range of scalpers (K3 to K6) and the new 30tonne R3 impact crusher. Compared to the former work cell production, the new process is expected to reduce the manufacturing time by up to 30%, depending on the type of model.

According to Keestrack management, phase three of the factory extension will be initiated in 2019/20. It includes a new quality control facility, a modern spare parts logistics terminal and a customer centre. Parallel to the floor space extension, Keestrack CZ will also implement a new

powder coating line, greatly increasing production capacities.

Keestrack’s Ponzano, Italy operation (Keestrack Italy) is to be the base of the company’s expansion of its heavy range with powerful track-mobile processing plant for quarrying and mining operation. The existing 5,000m² production of Keestrack Italy will at least be doubled by the planned factory extension, set to be finalised in 2020.

Production of Keestrack’s eTrack Indian branch crushers will start in May or June 2019 at the company’s new assembly plant in Neemrana, around 100km south of New Delhi. The first machines will leave the 10,000m² facility in August. The production programme initially includes the full hybrid B4e jaw crusher and H4e cone crusher, identified to meet the demands of Indian contractors in terms of productivity, transport and onsite mobility.

Sunward aims upwards in European excavator market Chinese manufacturer Sunward has ambitions to expand its share of the European excavator market having already made significant inroads since it first introduced its products to Europe in 2004.

It has achieved sales of 10,000 units since then, mainly small and medium-sized excavators, but the company acknowledges that competing for market share with the established major suppliers will be challenging.

“Sunward has made many achievements in Europe so far, but compared with the top companies, it still has a long way to go,” said He Qinghua, founder and chariman of Sunward.

Sunward competes on the quality, performance and the stylish design of its products, said He Qinghua. It also offers a high 06

level of service, something that is important in Chinese business culture.

The company has a production centre in France, where it also has a research and development (R&D) facility. “We have many engineers in Europe to survey the market and investigate local requirements so that we are able to make products suitable for the local market,” said He Qinghua.

He Qinghua believes that his company’s investment in R&D will not only benefit sales, but could also contribute to the industry generally. “We hope we can make a contribution to the European construction industry through technology innovation,” he said.

Chinese manufacturer Shantui Construction Machinery is focusing on the small and medium-sized bulldozer market as it expands its operations in Europe.

The company’s range of 60-670kW machines already meet the Tier 4 emissions standard.

“We aim to provide customers with highquality, good performance machines that meet their demands,” said Meng Guoqiang, vice general manager at Shantui. With an extensive range of machines, the company is able to offer models suited to different markets. European customers tend to focus more on the comfort of the cab than their Asian counterparts, said Guoqiang. en.shantui.com

Terex MP executes production expansion plans Terex Materials Processing is equipping itself to fully capitalise on rising global demand for aggregates processing equipment.

It recently revealed plans for a new £12 million (€13.95 million) manufacturing facility in Derry, Northern Ireland. The new 9,755m² Campsie manufacturing facility will focus on the design, manufacture and development of Terex Ecotec (waste management and recycling) and Terex Conveying Systems (TCS mobile conveying) product lines.

The announcement about the new Derry manufacturing site followed hot on the heels of Terex MP’s announcement that it will expand three of its existing manufacturing facilities: Hosur in India, Coalville in England, and Omagh in Northern Ireland.

Terex MP showcased new plant including the EvoQuip 290R Cobra impact crusher, said to be ideal for urban-based recycling, demolition and construction material processing applications. The Cobra 290R is said to offer optimal fuel efficiency and performance, ease of use, serviceability and versatility.

Hegarty also spoke of the significance of the new OMNI by Terex crusher plant fleet control system, which was seen on a variety of Powerscreen and Terex Finlay crushing and screening plant. The tablet-based system offers operators remote access to multiple machine control systems within a crushing and screening train. It is said to feature a simple, easy-to-use graphic control interface and live-camera views from critical vantage points.

Volvo CE appoints new tech head V

olvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has appointed Thomas Bitter as its new head of technology. Based at the company’s recently opened headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden, he will report to Volvo CE president Melker Jernberg and be a member of the company’s executive management team.

As senior vice-president of technology, Bitter, a long-standing Volvo CE employee, will be responsible for leading the development and delivery of the company’s global technology strategy.

Ammann looks to the future The Ammann Group is determined to develop sophisticated new technologies for road construction that tackle the growing environmental and resource challenges facing the road construction industry.

D

iscussing some of the key advances and market trends in the sector, Lieven Van Broekhoven, executive vice president sales and marketing at Ammann and Dr Hans-Friedrich Peters, executive vice president division plants at Ammann, said Ammann is busy tackling the big challenges.

One key focus will be recycling construction materials, an area in which the Ammann Group is already well-established, particularly for recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). There is still potential for further development in this area and, as Dr Peters commented: “We will have to think about solutions to increase the amount of recycling in road construction.”

The pressure on the supply of virgin road materials will continue to increase as restrictions on quarrying become ever tougher. With the slow but gradual shift away from a reliance on fossil fuels, the bitumen sector will also face challenges.

According to Dr Peters: “Bitumen will become more and more difficult to get,” adding that the best solution is for the use of RAP for road building operations to increase, right across the globe. This does present challenges however as quality has to be optimised.

While it is practical to recover milled cuttings from a jobsite,

determining the quality of the recovered asphalt presents a challenge.

“You have to have a good laboratory and you have to have a good granulator,” said Dr Peters. “You cannot take cuttings from the road and put these straight into the plant.”

He added that careful control and sorting of the RAP feed is required to ensure optimum mix quality.

With environmental factors now an important political issue, limits on emissions are being prioritised for transport and industry. In this respect, Ammann is amongst the technology leaders in ensuring its systems stay ahead of regulations and requirements.

Different markets have different challenges with regard to environmental legislation however.

In China, tough new regulations are being imposed by the government to help address air pollution issues in major urban areas, with asphalt plants now becoming subject to increasingly stringent requirements.

According to Van Broekhoven: “The regulations in China are changing, and very fast if we compare them to the rest of the world. The requirements for plants are changing rapidly so we are trying to stay on top of the regulations.”

He explained that in some respects, the Chinese regulations

In Europe however, the key focus is on lowering gas emissions from asphalt plants.

Although these different approaches may remain in China and Europe, he believes that the technology being developed is likely to be unified in the future, delivering asphalt plants that offer key benefits for operators.

The global market will benefit too: “We will bring our modern technology solution to North America, with strongly reduced emissions levels,” he added.

He said that while California has strict requirements on plant emissions at present that are similar to the regulations for Europe, most of the other US states are less stringent.

Another key challenge for the road construction sector is digitalisation of the worksite, again an area in which Ammann is developing advanced technological solutions.

The firm has established a partnership with Q Point to deliver a digital solution for digitalisation of asphalt road construction. Dr Peters said: “We are working with a highly integrated system providing a solution from the rock to the road, which started in mid2018.”

He explained that this incorporates factors such as truck logistics, types of mix and compaction values from the road construction. Overall, he said, it is all about “ensuring a connected worksite.” www.ammann-group.com

piroc CEO Per Lindberg has reiterated the company’s commitment to three major industrial trends: electromobility, digitalisation and automation.

Lindberg said the three trends are gaining ground in the construction and mining machinery industry, with developments in battery technology, digital service portfolios and autonomous solutions ringing in a new era.

aterpillar is developing new technology across 20 new construction and extraction products.

Ramin Younessi, group president for construction industries, said, “Cat construction machines are available with more automation, integrated technology and digital solutions that enable customers to focus on their most important task: running their businesses.”

One of the key product developments for the firm is the new D6 XE high drive, diesel electric dozer. This combines the advantages of the diesel electric drive, with high torque from rest for productivity and progressive ramping up of speed for lower undercarriage wear, with the proven benefits of the firm’s trademark high drive system.

The machine is said to offer fuel savings of up to 35% over the D6T being replaced.

Nor is the new diesel electric dozer alone in the range.

“We have been investing in electrification,” said Younessi.

The new 988K XE wheeled loader features a diesel electric drive and is also said to offer gains in productivity, combined with lower fuel consumption and reduced component wear. Tests with the 988K XE in working applications suggest that it could achieve efficiency gains of up to 48% over conventional models.

In the wheeled loader segment, the firm has also developed an all-electric prototype in the shape of the 906 model. This would suit customers in the rental sector, where machines typically have lower operating hours on-site and where the equipment owners would favour low maintenance and general running costs.

to decrease owning and operating costs while increasing power density and the use of alternative fuels, maximising the efficiency of power systems, and expanding electrification in our product lines.”

The firm also continues to develop its excavator range, one of the key product lines. The company is introducing three excavators, including the 330

and 336, which are equipped with integrated Cat technology that the firm claims can increase operating efficiency up to 45%, compared with conventional grading operations. Meanwhile performance upgrades mean these excavators offer an increase in fuel efficiency of up to 20% over the previous generation models. www.cat.com

” Fayat’s forward view Digitalisation and technology are key issues for the construction machinery business, areas that the Fayat Group is keen to invest in at present. The firm is introducing an array of new machines and models across its product lines, with highly sophisticated systems being core components.

ean-Claude Fayat is CEO of the Fayat Group and said, “We have to work on digitalisation for everyone. I am sure that the big development in equipment will come from this digitalisation.”

He said that one important step for the firm is the agreement settled recently between its road machinery businesses BOMAG and Dynapac, with Volz Consulting.

This covers the BPO logistics technology developed by Volz Consulting, which is designed to help contractors organise operations efficiently and also to recover as-built data from equipment in real time.

The BPO package is one of a range of solutions being offered on machines from the Fayat Group that are intended to optimise construction operations and boost overall efficiency. The firm is keen to offer more such solutions, whether developed internally or through partnership with other firms, and Fayat added, “We will have systems that are helping the driver with the job.”

Machine autonomy is another area where the Fayat Group is involved in technologically advanced

projects. The firm is working with Trimble on autonomous compaction machine prototypes, but does face future challenges in this respect. Fayat said, “On the technology point of view, we are nearly ready. But is the market ready to accept such a machine?”

He said that the rules and regulations around the use of autonomous machines have yet to be defined however, presenting a limiting factor on their introduction to construction. He commented, “In case of an accident, who is responsible?”

While crashes with manually operated equipment do occur and do cause injuries and fatalities on-site, this is a recognised problem. But Fayat commented, “We are not ready to accept the same thing if it is coming from a machine.”

Improving working safety for construction personnel is another key issue for the Fayat Group. The autonomous machines could deliver such safety gains, but the regulatory boundaries have to be defined. And new rules and regulations will have to be established concerning the use of autonomous construction

machines. While autonomous machines are being used already in mining, Fayat pointed out that these are operated in areas where access is strictly controlled, and typically a long way from population centres.

Fayat does see a future for autonomous machines in the construction industry and said, “It will come, but the question is when?”

Similarly, the Fayat Group is also prioritising the environment and Fayat said, “There is an environmental problem and it is our duty to take care of that.”

As part of this, the company is investing in developing recycling technologies. For example, its Marini and MariniErmont asphalt plants are now able to use higher quantities of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) than ever before, while producing far lower exhaust and noise emissions.

There is a huge potential for increased use of RAP in road construction and Fayat said, “In France less than 20% of RAP is used.” He explained that the comparatively low cost of virgin materials in France has slowed the utilisation of RAP. Fayat said that in Germany, where there are now more

regulations requiring the use of RAP, around 25% of this is now used. In the Netherlands RAP use is higher still, at around 40%. He commented, “But in the Netherlands, virgin materials are very expensive traditionally compared with France, where they have been much cheaper.”

However, the company is looking ahead to increasing the use of RAP to 100%, which is why the firm has developed equipment such as its new Master Tower and TRX plants.

Europe is by no means the only market where environmental factors are being regarded as import for construction, with RAP use also prevalent in the US road building market. And in China, the authorities are keen to boost RAP use as well as cutting down on asphalt plant emissions, for which the Fayat Group is well placed to meet demand.

Looking ahead, Fayat believes also that developing environmental solutions offers potential commercial opportunities, for technology developers, equipment manufacturers and for construction companies. www.fayat.com

iuGong chairman Zeng Guang’an believes that new technologies such as intelligent automation, electrification and digitalisation are driving the Chinese construction equipment machinery industry forward and inspiring manufacturers to develop their own solutions.

“The shift from ‘made in China’ to ‘created in China’ has inspired LiuGong to accelerate innovation in science and technology, with the aim of becoming the industry leader,” said Zeng.

Topcon’s digitalisation developments Topcon Positioning is continuing to develop digital tools for its building and construction portfolio as the industry increasingly gets behind the digitalisation trend.

T

opcon is also tackling the challenge of a lack of expertise among some customers by offering consultancy services to bring them up to speed with the new possibilities such technology offers.

The firm is in a strong position as the wider market embraces digitalisation, said Ulrich Hermanski, chief marketing officer at Topcon Positioning. “Everybody is talking about digitalisation and automation and everybody has a solution. Digitalisation is becoming a buzzword for companies and that’s completely different from three years ago.”

Hermanski sees this as a positive development as it will make construction operations more efficient and productive.

He said, “That’s good for the business.”

The company is continuing to develop its portfolio to meet this growing demand and he said, “We are filling the gaps in the workflow.”

The firm has had its Smoothride surveying package for some years, but did not have a planning or logistics

tool to sit alongside the system.

However, with the introduction of Pavelink, the firm can now provide a digital connection from the asphalt plant to the finished road. In terms of road construction, this allows for far better finish quality as factors such as asphalt grades, temperatures and compaction can all be optimised.

The firm has had success already with its latest technology, particularly for airport runway paving. The airports at Frankfurt and Bologna have already benefited from the use of Topcon’s advanced systems, with several other major airports also now looking to employ the technology. He said, “Now we have tenders for other sections.”

The airport sector is an important market for Topcon.

The fact that this is a niche market focussed on quality means that it has been quick to adopt these more advanced paving systems. The company has around 20 projects in hand for the coming months at present, most of which are for airport runways, although it will also be working on a racetrack.

construction there are larger challenges, particularly from road authorities, many of which are behind the curve in terms of technology. Hermanski said, “We have a lot of new technology but road regulators are still sticking to the old methods. They are forcing us to find a workaround to meet the old protocols.”

He said that road authorities need to be convinced of the benefits of these new technologies and the potential gains in finish quality and reductions in cost and construction times that they can offer. The state of Baden Wurttemberg in Germany is now adopting many of the new road building technologies, but is an exception in that it is so forward looking. He said, “The state changed the tender documents to meet the demands of the new technology.”

He explained that the problem in some countries is not a lack of financial resources, but rather one of expertise.

Hermanski said, “There are not enough companies and not enough engineers.”

This is why Topcon is now

offering a consultancy service for its customers and Hermanski said, “Topcon can handle the data wherever it comes from.

Smoothride is good if you know how to do it. You need to manage the whole process. We are teaching people how to use the technology.”

The benefits of the Pavelink system, in providing a monitoring solution for the whole asphalt paving process, are substantial. This package provides a connection from the asphalt plant, through the materials logistics operation to the paving machines. Hermanski said, “The system is really important regarding BIM processes. We can see material volumes, which plant the asphalt was from and at what time it was produced and also the temperatures. We can see all the data for general reporting.”

Liebherr rolls out the new R 934

CASE’S BIOMETHANE LOADER CONCEPT

C

ASE is showing off its novel ProjectTETRA biomethane-powered wheeled loader concept capable of being powered by a range of local and sustainable energy sources. The engine of the concept model, not a production machine, uses biomethane derived from waste sources. This can be a mixture of domestic organic waste, waste food from industrial food production, restaurants and canteens as well as from waste biomass products such as wood chippings, animal waste and specifically-grown energy crops.

The CASE concept uses an

FPT Industrial methane engine which features stoichiometric combustion technology specifically developed for construction applications. It delivers maximum power of nearly 170kW, identical to the equivalent diesel powerplant.

This is achieved with a 50% reduction in drive-by noise levels, which CASE says makes it ideal for municipal applications and when working in close proximity to offices and residential areas.

It produces 95% less CO2 when running on biomethane, 90% less nitrogen dioxides and 99% lower particular

matter than a diesel-powered equivalent, delivering an 80% reduction in overall emissions, according to CASE. CASE also said that it worked with Michelin’s tyre design teams to develop a prototype airless tyre. This cutting-edge design foresees a fusion of the tyre/wheel combination and features inbuilt suspension. The pure rubber and composite material construction enables the tyre to withstand extreme construction site conditions “and could be considered indestructible”, noted CASE. www.casece.com

Liebherr says that the new R 934 Litronic excavator is a completely updated design characteristic of the company’s new range of “Generation 8” machines.

As with other crawler excavators, the R 934 is being made by LiebherrFrance in Colmar, France.

The Stage V R 934 weighs around 35tonnes and is positioned between the R 936 (Stage IV) and the new R 938, which also is Stage V. It is based on the platform of the new and larger R 938. Both models are available with the relevant engines in countries where emissions standards regulation is extremely stringent or less stringent, or in countries where regulation does not exist.

Backhoe bucket capacities of the R 934 vary from 1-2.5m³.

The digging forces and tractive forces of the undercarriage and the swing torque of the upper-carriage have been significantly increased compared to the previous generation. The load curve and inertia of the swivelling drive have been optimised to reduce fuel consumption.

Dynapac’s latest compactors Dynapac is now offering special High Climb (HC) soil compactors. These are specially-adapted versions of the CA2500 and CA3500 models bearing HC logos and which meet the Stage IV and Tier 4 Final emissions requirements. A key feature of the High Climb models is that they are able to climb the same grade of slope, whether operating in forward or reverse. The High Climb application is suited to duties such as compaction in trenches and allows a machine the ability to reverse up the grade of a trench, where turning around is unfeasible due to the narrowness. This higher gradeability is possible in reverse as the machine is equipped with the firm’s latest Anti-spin versions of its NoSpin rear axles. To achieve this, the firm has used new, heavier components in the rear axle, drive, motor and transmission. The new configuration allows the drum to push the machine in reverse up a slope of 28°.

PD machines and D machines are fitted with pad shells to achieve a perfect grip in soil. However, the smooth drum versions also offer sufficient grip to drive the machines in reverse. Special mechanical stops have been added on the drive side of the drum, preventing unwanted overload of the rubber elements. In order to assist the operator, the displays on HC machines indicate both tilt and gradeability.

DOOSAN PIONEERS ‘TELEOPERATION’ D oosan is unveiling one of the first uses globally of 5G technology to remotely control construction and quarrying machines. The South Korean construction and quarrying equipment manufacturer has coined the term ‘TeleOperation’ to describe the remote operation of construction equipment.

The firm has demonstrated the control of a DX380LC-5 40tonne crawler excavator located over 8,500km away in Incheon, South Korea.

TeleOperation has been co-developed with

LG U+, the South Korean telecommunications and data services company. Doosan claims that the TeleOperation demonstration on the Doosan stand is the first to remotely control a machine across such a large distance between locations, which have a time difference of eight hours, using 5G telecommunications technology.

For TeleOperation to function properly, it is essential to deliver live video streaming at the operator’s station in a reliable way that minimises time lag. With its ultra reliability and

low latency (signal delay), the new 5G network overcomes these issues in the Doosan system, providing 10 times faster bandwidth and 10 times lower latency than the 4G network.

Special features incorporated include a low latency video transmission module with fast video transfer (with encoding and decoding), an important factor in reducing the time delay. LG U+ has also introduced new modules providing low latency image processing to further minimise the time delay. Another factor in

creating more effective remote control is the use of Doosan’s innovative electrohydraulic technology in the DX380LC-5 excavator.

The DX380LC-5 excavator being remotely controlled is a standard machine, which allows Doosan to guarantee the performance and the compatibility of thirdparty attachments and other equipment installed on the excavator. Dressta unveils new dozer duo Dressta’s new TD-15 and TD-25 crawler dozers are said to be the result of the manufacturer’s UK industrial design and research and development teams’ exhaustive customer research.

The TD-15 benefits from a Stage V compliant powertrain and has been designed to offer maximum versatility through the widest choice of frame structures and blades.

New load sensing provides more precise blades and ripper control and reduces fuel consumption up to 10%. The 20.7tonne,

Terex Trucks offers updated TA300 Terex Trucks is unveiling its updated TA300 articulated hauler. The TA300 benefits from the new EP320 transmission, which comes with two additional forward gears – eight in total – as well as four reverse gears. This helps to ensure smoother gear shifting and thereby superior operator comfort.

INNOVATIVE SOIL COMPACTION A

key innovation from Dynapac is its new seismic system for soil compactors. The firm says that this new system allows the roller to set the optimum frequency for any compacted material itself. It achieves this by monitoring the variations in the stiffness of the material being compacted and as a result is able to constantly adjust performance to meet the needs of the changing soil conditions.

This is said to boost efficiency and cut compaction

times, as well as reducing fuel consumption by as much as 30% in tests. The package is being offered as standard for the firm’s soil compactors from the CA1500 to the CA6500, along with the Dynapac Compaction Meter. The system eliminates the problem of the drum bouncing on ground that is already compacted, boosting efficiency further.

In addition, the firm is now fitting its EVIB system to complement CMV in the compaction meter, the E module

reflects the soil stiffness and can be shown as a loading value (Evib1) or unloading value (Evib2). Because the system is self-adjusting, it also eliminates the need for a final pass with a conventional deadweight roller, further cutting fleet costs for the user. Caterpillar’s new D6 bulldozer comes with the choice of a 4-speed fully automatic drive or a high-drive electric transmission, an industry first, according to Cat. The D6 automatic transmission provides increased productivity and up to 20% better fuel efficiency versus its 3-speed predecessor.

But it’s the XE electric transmission version that will offer up to 35% better fuel efficiency and increased agility compared to the previous 3-speed model D6T. The diesel engine runs at continuous lower RPM to power only the generator that produces the electricity for the drive, which means much less fuel is consumed. Constant power to the ground, continuous push and greater manoeuvrability mean faster cycle times.

The D6/D6 XE is available in VPAT - Variable Power Angle Tilt - or push arm configurations with standard or two widths of Low Ground Pressure (LGP) undercarriage. A variety of blade types, track shoe widths and rear attachments enable the machine to be optimised for every type of job.

Grading can be done at higher speeds with the newly designed lighter VPAT structure so machine balance is optimised for grading without the need for a rear implement or counterweight.

Hyundai’s latest crawler excavators Hyundai is introducing its latest earthmoving machines in Europe, the HX220A L and HX300A L excavators.

These machines both meet the latest European emissions regulations, with Stage V compliant engines. The 22tonne class HX200A L is powered by a diesel rated at 136kW and features a 1.34m3 bucket as standard. Meanwhile, the 30tonne class HX300A L is powered by a diesel rated at 180kW and features a 1.85m3 bucket as standard.

Both machines feature the firm’s latest cab layout, which is said to offer good all-round visibility and high-quality operator ergonomics. Maintenance points are all said to be grouped, to help improve servicing. John Deere is now offering its graders for the European market

Volvo unveils first 20tonne excavator

ohn Deere is now offering two of its grader models in the European market.

The machines will be sold and supported through the Wirtgen dealer and distributor network. This move follows John Deere’s acquisition of the Wirtgen Group and shows how the US firm is keen to develop its operations in new markets.

The company is starting with introducing its graders as these sit best alongside the Wirtgen range for road construction.

However, other machines from the John Deere range will be

introduced to the European market in due course, with some of the dozers likely to be next in line.

The two graders from the eight-model John Deere grader range being offered are the 622GP and 672GP, as these meet best with European requirements. The machines offer high-performance, high-output diesels, a 6.8litre delivering 169kW and a 9litre delivering 190kW respectively and which meet the latest emissions requirements, while offering low fuel consumption.

The 622GP has a moldboard width of 3.66m while the 672GP has a moldboard width of 4.27m. These EH models are equipped with both ergonomic joystick controls and a conventional steering wheel, which the firm says makes them easy to operate. Features also include six-wheel drive with automatic differential lock, which allows the machines to power through the toughest cuts and is said to give operators increased traction in poor ground conditions. www.deere.com

Hamm is upgrading its soil compactor offering

Hamm claims increased compaction performance for key models in its single drum roller range. One of the innovations from the firm is a new compaction measurement system developed for use with oscillation type single drum rollers The company’s new VIO compaction meter allows users to measure and document machine performance when operating in oscillation mode.

The package allows customers to document each pass, even when using continuous dynamic compaction control applications with oscillation. The system is available for the firm’s H 7i VIO and H 13i VIO compactors.

Also new for the soil compaction range are the C models, which benefit from extra climbing ability. The rollers have a more powerful hydrostatic drive that can deliver up to 30% more torque than a standard model.

As a result, these models have better traction and climbing ability and can be used for heavy earthworks or compacting cohesive soils. However, the standard diesels are fitted so the machines have the same fuel economy as the standard models.

Also new for the soil compactor range is a dozer blade with revised geometry that allows more material to be moved and distributed than before. Special skid shoes are said to prevent the blade from digging into the ground and it has a patented, highvisibility cross member that allows a clear forward view.

Ammann’s new soil compactors offer productivity and versatility

Hitachi’s ZX210LC-6 SLF is out front Operators can now reach further and dig deeper thanks to a “Super Long Front” version of Hitachi’s new mid-size ZX210LC-6 excavator.

Hitachi said that the ZX210LC-6 SLF with a maximum digging reach of 15m is the optimum solution for maintaining rivers and lakes, as well as slope finishing and landscaping. A larger than usual counterweight offers exceptional stability and safety, smooth operation and a high level of

durability, again especially aimed at European customers, according to the company.

It shares key components with the standard Zaxis-6 model and has been designed and built in-house. It can remove soil quickly and easily from depths of 11m. The arm and boom are fitted with hose rupture valves to maintain the load in the cylinder in the unlikely event of a damaged hose.

Powered by a 128kW engine, it has an operating weight of around 25,000kg and a

bucket digging force of 81kN. To enhance the durability, the ZX210LC-6 SLF has a larger box-type cross section and thicker steel plates than normal. Versatility has been addressed with the design of the front attachment, which enables easy transportation of the machine. THE SF-2404 FROM POWER PAVERS U

S-based Power Curbers group has responded to customer demand for larger four-track paving units with the SF-2404 paver from Power Pavers, which can handle any concrete paving project from 2m to 7.5m wide.

The unit’s telescoping frame allows simple width adjustment without having to add rigid frame extensions for all occasions, from conventional paving to offset

and custom applications.

Power Pavers’ Simple Steer track positioning and a onetouch rotary knob to control steering makes the SF-2404 easy to operate, according to the company.

Thanks to the four tracks, when readying the machine for transport, it can be loaded without having to take off any of the tracks. The operator can prep the machine without leaving the controls. When loaded, the

dimensions are 3.2m high, 3.6m wide with paving kit (or 3m without paving kit) and just over 9m long.

The Cummins QSB6.7 watercooled engine is Tier 4 compliant and there is also a Tier 3 version for developing markets.

Dual ice/chilled water plant in stackable container Lintec & Linnhoff is introducing the first of a new line of Lintec Eisanlagen (LEA) concrete cooling plants. The LEA 100 is a dual ice/ ice water plant that can produce 100tonnes/day.

The plant is mounted in a single 12.2m (40ft) High Cube sea container, which enables the unit to be stacked on top of other containers, as well allowing users to add further units to increase capacity to up to 400tonnes/day.

Ice or chilled water is

produced by the same generator and the choice is controlled by a single switch. As the main refrigerant, LEA 100 uses ammonia (NH³), which is water soluble and has a simple elemental structure making it more environmentally friendly than alternatives. Its platelet refrigeration method consumes 30-50% less energy compared with conventional drum ice plants, claims the company.

Marini-Ermont claims that its new Explorer is the most mobile asphalt plant on the market. This continuous plant is said to be easy to commission and install and can be supplied to site in just six shipping containers. These contain the cold feeder, the dryer, the bag filters, the bitumen tank, the hotmix stage and the cabin along with belts.

Thierry de Sars, product development and marketing director at the firm explained that the plant can also be erected without the need for a crane, due to a patented design featuring a novel onboard hydraulic raise system.

The plant is offered in a parallel flow version with an output of 150tonnes/hour as well as a counterflow variant with an output of 160tonnes/hour. The parallel flow variant can handle up to 35% RAP in the feed while the counterflow variant can cope with 50% RAP in the feed. Asphalt quality is said to be good from the plant, which utilises the same components and technology as the larger machines from the firm. The plant is fast to erect and commission as well as being quick to disassemble and make ready for transport.

Benninghoven install shot-gas generator on TBA plant Benninghoven has installed its BA RPP asphalt plant’s recycling drum using counterflow action with hot-gas generator on the firm’s TBA plant.

The TBA transportable asphalt mixing plant covers the 160–320tonnes/hour output range and is suitable for semi-mobile and stationary use. The design of the main components in container format with plug-in wiring allows for ideal transport options and reduced set-up times for the modular system. The high level 24

HAMM’S UPGRADED PNEUMATIC ROLLERS H amm is introducing its HP series of rubber tyre rollers, which are now based on a common platform. This new generation of compactors is said to combine both proven and new features, with the Tier 3, Tier 4 and Stage V compliant models all sharing the same basic structure. The machines feature an asymmetrical frame design that is said to allow high compaction performance along with good all-round visibility.

One important feature is the large water reservoir, with a special quick filling system that allows water to be loaded in just two minutes. The improved ballast system allows weight to be changed speedily using a forklift truck, while the large

Astec is introducing its latest generation BG series asphalt batching plant line-up to the market. The prototype BG1800 model has now been unveiled, which offers an output of 120tonnes/hour when handling feed materials with moisture content of up to 3%. This features a 2m diameter XL dryer drum, an XL screen with an area of 15m2 and it also has a reverse air baghouse filter with 413m2 of filter area. The plant has an 1,800kg capacity mixer with a 45-second cycle time and the plant can handle up to 40% RAP in the mixer.

The prototype has been built in Astec’s facility in India but the BG plants will also be manufactured in the firm’s factories in the US for North American customers and Brazil for the Latin American market. The new BG series includes models with outputs of 100-240tonnes/hour and because of the modular design, the plants can be tailored specifically to meet local market requirements. VÖGELE’S GIANT PAVER V ögele is introducing the updated SUPER 3000-3(i) asphalt paver.

This is the biggest asphalt paver in the range and can now be used to pave widths up to a maximum 18m. This machine can be used to pave multiple highway lanes at once and also suits airport runway paving work. Power for the SUPER 3000-3(i) comes from a six-cylinder diesel rated at 354kW and the machine is designed with a throughput of 1,800tonnes/hour, while it can lay asphalt to a maximum depth of 500mm.

Intrame adds to its Flow Mix line Asphalt plant manufacturer Intrame’s latest addition to its Flow Mix range of continuous plants is helping it to break into the North American market. Intrame has just sold two 400tonne/hour plants to the US, as well as one 200tonne/hour plant.

“We had to redevelop the continuous range for France. Once we had done this, we decided to take the same range to North America,” said Intrame’s managing director Antonio Morón Hodge. “But in that market, they are used to producing bigger volumes.”

SBM mixing plant makes maintenance easier SBM Mineral Processing is launching the Euromix 3300 Space concrete mixing plant, which is designed for easier maintenance.

The new plant is an update on the existing Euromix 3300 model and features the addition of 1m interior stairwells on either side of the mixing plant, as well as an inspection platform on each side.

“The new plant offers 100% more space on the mixing platform and 200% more walking and standing space for service and maintenance works,” said Erwin Schneller, managing director of SBM Mineral Processing. The pre-existing Euromix 3300 is SBM’s biggest selling mixing plant, and the company says it is adding the new

“We are introducing the Space model initially on the 3300 and may extend it in future to our other mixing plant models in future,” said Vockner.

CONTROLS is introducing the Automax Pro 3000 kN compression machine, which features a high stiffness certified EN-compliant testing frame. The unit is controlled by the firm’s automatic power control system.

This allows tests to be carried out automatically and features closedloop digital feedback technology.

AMMANN’S EFFICIENT RAP A

mmann claims that its new RSS 120-M RAP recycling machine offers a higher quality output than other equipment on the market.

According to Ferdinando Dell’Orto, global strategy manager shredders, “It doesn’t tear material apart like other recycling machines.”

The machine can produce up to 120tonnes/hour when using milled cuttings in the feed or 80tonnes/hour when using RAP in larger slab form. Weighing 35.5tonnes and measuring 13m long by 2.55m wide, the machine is said to be easy to transport while also being quick

to commission on-site.

The machine has a higher output quality due to the configuration of the primary shredder, which features counter-rotation at speeds of just 10rpm. This is a key feature and Dell’Orto explained, “You have to keep the structure of the grain with the bitumen coating but without generating fines.”

He said that at this comparatively low speed, any lumps of RAP will be broken up, but without fracturing the individual stones and without generating fines. Furthermore, the bitumen coating around each piece of aggregate remains

A magnetic separator then removes any tramp iron or steel from the conveyor belt, with the feed going to the double deck screen. Dell’Orto said that customers can choose from a wide range of mesh sizes to suit their needs, with the machine then producing two output feed sizes. Any oversize material can be fed to the secondary shredder and recirculated into the feed, or can be output for use as subbase. Wirtgen claims increased versatility for its new SP 124 and SP 124i highway class concrete paver models. The two variants of this machine run on four tracks, allowing them to manoeuvre in tighter spaces and offer better versatility than the earlier SP 120 with its two tracks. The machine can move to one side and then turn on its own axis, allowing it to pave alongside a previously paved stretch. For transport, the legs can be swung inwards to minimise overall width.

According to Wirtgen, the machine offers a compact transport size for its paving width.

SUMITOMO’S HA60C-11 FOR EUROPE S umitomo aims to make inroads into the European market and boost brand awareness with its new HA60C-11 paver, soon to start field trials with customers.

Sumitomo is a well known and respected brand of paving and excavator equipment in Japan, its home market. The company sells around 350 pavers a year, equating to around 70% of the market,

said Shi Weichao, Sumitomo’s Europe regional manager for road machinery sales.

Europe is a very large market and dominated by well known European manufacturers, making it highly competitive.

Carlson’s global paver Carlson is now introducing a new asphalt paver aimed at the international market in the shape of its wheeled CP65 model. This features 4x6 drive and a tamper bar screed developed for customers in Europe, as well as other global markets favouring this type of asphalt paving.

Travis Colwell is marketing and communications coordinator for Carlson Paving products and said, “We have a single tamper bar and electric heating.”

Carlson is market leader in the North American market for asphalt screeds and Colwell said, “We’ve leveraged a lot of technology from our other screeds in this.” He added that it has special bushes inside the extension system that allow the user to take up any wear in the system.

Meanwhile, the design of the extension system is said to ensure optimum paving accuracy even as the screed ages.

The ECZ 34TV screed offers hydraulic extension from 1.8-3.4m, with a maximum paving width of 4.5m when equipped with bolton extensions. Minimum pave width of 750mm can also be achieved.

oadtec is now offering a new material transfer vehicle (MTV) in the shape of its MTV 1105e model.

The machine weighs in at 21.7tonnes unladen and features power from a Cummins QSB6.7 diesel, rated at 186kW and which meets Tier 4 Final/Stage V emissions requirements. This is the first time that Roadtec has offered a tracked MTV. The firm says that it has achieved this using proven components and systems from its existing product line and bringing these

ROADTEC’S NEW MTV together in a new configuration to meet market demand for a tracked MTV. The machine does not have the remixing capability of its stable mate, the Shuttle Buggy, and instead utilises the proven chassis of the firm’s wheeled MTV 1100 model.

arini is introducing a sophisticated batching plant able to use a feed containing up to 100% recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). The innovative Master Tower is said to feature technology that is completely different from existing plant designs.

This batch plant has its two drums mounted end to end.

The first drum is for drying the virgin aggregates and is heated by a burner. An internal tube carries the heat through the virgin aggregate drum, ending

before it reaches the end of the drum. Hot gases then circulate through the drum before passing through heat exchange systems to the second drum, where the RAP is added. This design avoids direct heating of the bitumen, so there is no risk of this being burned off. The plant can use a mix of virgin materials plus RAP, or produce mixes from RAP only.

BEUMER SHOWCASES APRON CONVEYORS B eumer Group is launching its GSZF robust apron conveyors, which are used in cement plants to transport clinker from the kiln cooling system to the silos.

According to Beumer. the GSZF is a novel apron conveyor in that it uses a belt instead of a chain as traction element which allows higher speeds and a slimmer design while still delivering the same level of performance.

The belt apron conveyor has a speed of up to 0.6m/s, meaning it can reach double the conveying speed compared to apron conveyors

with a chain. This makes it suited for retrofitting and modernisations. If operators want to increase the kiln capacity for example, they can replace an existing chain apron conveyor with a belt version of the same size – this means double the capacity without having to make any changes to the steel structure or the conveyor bridge.

E-Mak’s Megaton aggregates factory E-Mak’s latest invention is an aggregate factory which takes rock from a quarry, crushes it, sorts the aggregates into sizes and delivers them in the proportions required. Called Megaton, it can be used for aggregate production, concrete production, cold mix production and aggregate production.

Megaton has been designed to operate in major materials production facilities, close to large conurbations. It can be built to serve all or any combination of the applications mentioned above.

“The inspiration actually came from Istanbul, where there is a huge quarry, used by multiple construction companies, which is now surrounded by houses due to the increasing population of the city. In situations like that Megaton would be ideal,” said Onur Recepgil, brand and marketing manager for E-Mak. As well as limiting dust, Megaton prevents aggregates from taking on moisture, reducing the energy needed for asphalt production. Due to the controlled environment in which the aggregates are stored, it can also lead to higher-quality materials, according to E-Mak. The first version of the Megaton will be erected at a quarry and materials production facility in Bursa, Turkey, which is owned by E-Mak sister company Singemat, having made a show-stopping appearance at Bauma 2019 in Munich.

The Megaton process sees pieces of rock from a quarry fed through a vertical shaft impactor (VSI) crusher with a capacity of 450tonnes per hour. The aggregate is then lifted by a vertical elevator into the sieving units for grading and is then stored according to its size within the 3,000tonne-capacity silo. The right combination of aggregate grades can then be delivered directly to an aggregate or concrete plant.

Xylem’s new pump can switch impellers Xylem is launching its new Godwin CD150S Dri-Prime dewatering pump designed for heavyduty construction and mining applications.

Alliance Low Water Washer Superior Industries is launching its new Alliance Low Water Washer in Europe. The claimed one-of-a-kind technology allows crusher plant operators to wash fines within their crushing circuit. It eliminates the need to transport the fines to a separate wash site, which requires costly trucks and harmful re-handling of the material.

With a 272tonnes/hour throughput capacity, the Alliance Low Water Washer accepts a dry

feed from the crushing circuit.

An agitator converts the material to a slurry before an integrated dewatering screen removes excess water, leaving as little as 8% moisture in the discharged manufactured sand. Superior says existing units have required as little 45-90m³/hour of water, depending on production rates.

That’s significantly less water consumption than a traditional screw or cyclone.

In addition to wet processing equipment, Superior is planning to showcase a group of conveyor components.

McLanahan UltraWASH plant McLanahan is unveiling its UltraWASH modular wash plant.

The firm says the UltraWash plant is a standardised line that is containerised, easy-to-install, and fast to set up. Currently available in three sizes, the UltraWASH can produce up to three aggregate products and two sand products. It features a single process water feed point, as well as a single effluent discharge point.

McLanahan says that, thanks to it recent acquisition of Anaconda Equipment, the UltraWASH feed hopper and conveyor can be upgraded to come with tracks for easier conveyor maintenance.

Volvo updates Haul Assist The new Map feature on Volvo’s updated Haul Assist application now allows operators to monitor the hauler traffic around the site and proactively adjust their driving according to traffic conditions … especially around load and dump zones.

Operated via Volvo Co-Pilot — the award-winning in-cab interface with a 25.5cm-highresolution touch screen — Haul Assist’s Map functionality allows operators to not only identify their position but also the position of other haulers fitted with the technology.

This knowledge comes into its own on sites with restricted visibility, allowing operators to see where the other haulers are … a feature that should reduce potentially dangerous situations.

In all circumstances, being able to monitor traffic flow helps operators anticipate the optimum arrival time at load or dump

The Map function can plot out haul roads and preferred routes to help operators navigate their way around the site. It can highlight when the hauler is approaching a pre-defined section of narrow or single lane road, and even visualise meeting/passing areas. The map can also highlight any reference points or notable areas of the site.

Powerscreen and Terex Finlay are launching OMNI, a tablet-based system that will help improve jobsite safety and efficiency in operating crushing and screening equipment.

Fitted inside the cab of a material feed excavator, the system provides centralised remote access to multiple machine control systems within a crushing and screening train. It has been designed for improved control and ease of operation, offering information and views of the entire machine train.

heeled loader and excavator attachment specialist Simex has a raft of new developments for its growing customer base. The Italian firm, which has seen its turnover almost double in the last five years to Euro €40 million, is currently extending its factory to twice its current size.

“We have been growing by going into new areas and by making new attachments,” said Alessandro Solo, Simex’s sales area manager for Northern Europe, the Baltics and SubSaharan Africa. “Our first aim is to design and produce units which are unique. Most of them are patented.”

One of the most exciting new products is a conveyor belt which can be added to Simex’s RWA 500 wheel saw. “Using this you don’t need any more equipment or people.

The material can be discharged directly to the truck,” said Solo. He expects the RWA 500 with conveyor to be popular all over Europe, especially in countries where fibre optic cables are currently being installed in the ground.

Perhaps more unusual, but just as ingenious, is Simex’s MHB attachment.

This has a circular milling tool that allows contractors to mill around a manhole in one operation, rather than having to move the milling machine multiple times. “This will

It has a rotating joint so that it can be set to cut radii down to 5m. Again, this is a niche attachment which will save time and produce a neater end result, said Solo.

Indeco mulching heads clear the way Indeco says that its new IMH series of hydraulically-driven, boom-mounted mulching heads will turn an excavator or mini-loader into a powerful landclearing tool. Fitted onto carriers from 5-50tonnes, the mulching heads with HARDOX components will easily and quickly fell and clear vegetation.

Tasks include tree felling, site preparation, the management of invasive vegetation, storm damage removal and clean-up applications. The mulching heads are also available in an SG (stump grinder) version.

Indeco said that the initial investment is low and maintenance costs are reduced. In addition, mulching heads offer a decidedly more environmentally friendly alternative to ‘slash and burn’.

Big savings with Hitachi’s smaller ZX65USB-6 Good things come in small packages, such as Hitachi’s new Zaxis-6 series model ZX65USB-6 mini excavator. The new Zaxis-6 model can be used with a variety of attachments. ALLU UNVEILS NEW TS BLADE

A

LLU introduced its patented TS blade structure for its screener/crusher bucket range. At the core of the ALLU TS drum construction is the configuration of the screening blades that spin between the screening combs. The end product size is defined by the space between the comb, and different fragment sizes can be achieved simply by repositioning the combs.

As the screening combs carry most of the material weight, the drums and bearings experience less impact and load. The unit’s assembly design ensures the machine works well with wet and dry materials without clogging.

The ALLU TS drums are available with two different blade types: standard blades for screening applications and axe blades when a crushing or shredding effect is required. Blade sizes available include 16-32mm, 25-50mm and 35mm.

Volvo CE unveils first two electric compact models Volvo Construction Equipment has unveiled its first two commercial zero-emissions machines, the ECR25 excavator and the L25 wheeled loader … and signalled the beginning of the end of diesel-powered excavators and wheeled loaders. Both of these new units feature in Volvo CE’s new range of electric compact models.

The Swedish giant has made the machines with city-based construction projects in mind, designing them to deliver zero exhaust emissions, significantly lower noise levels, reduced energy costs, improved efficiency outputs and less maintenance requirements.

The move signals the end of diesel engines. From mid-2020, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) will begin to launch a range of electric compact

Wacker Neuson’s electrification agenda Wacker Neuson is continuing its electrification drive with the addition of a mini excavator and dumper, rammer, vibrating plate and concrete vibrator with battery back-pack to its ‘zero emissions’ range.

“We can now provide everything we need for a smalland medium-sized jobsite. That’s the widest range you can find anywhere in the industry,” said Alexander Greschner, chief sales officer at Wacker Neuson.

Production of the E17e mini excavator will begin at the end of the year. “There is no difference in performance between this machine and the diesel version,”

said Andreas Gstöttenbauer, head of product management at the company’s Hörsching site. Wacker Neuson is also developing a larger excavator, the EZ26e, but this is still at the research stage with no production date set.

In designing any piece of electrically-powered kit, Wacker Neuson’s goal is to provide a battery life that can keep the equipment operating for a whole day – however that does not mean eight hours of continuous use. The lithium-ion battery in the excavator is 25kW hours. It has an onboard charging system that can work with between 100 and 400volts.

tlas Copco is launching a new addition to its line of PAS (Pumping Application Solutions) HH pumps.

The PAS HH 150 pump, is suitable for quarrying and mining applications and has a 150mm port and can manage solids of up to 100mm in size. It joins the existing range of PAS HH pumps, the 80HH, 100HH and 200 HH. In addition to mining and quarrying, the PAS 150 HH can also be used for agricultural and temporary firefighting applications, according to Antionio Totomanlio, divisional product marketing manager pumps at Atlas Copco. KCME partners with Engcon and Leica for tiltrotator control Kobelco Construction Machinery Europe (KCME), Engcon and Leica Geosystems have announced they are jointly collaborating to develop a tiltrotator-compatible full machine control system for the Kobelco SK210LC-10 excavator.

The three partners claim the new system will dramatically improve on-site productivity. It combines 3D Machine Control (3DMC) technology from Leica Geosystems with the tiltrotator solution from Engcon. A full European launch of the system is expected in Q1 2020.

The Tiltrotator attachment enables an excavator’s bucket or other power tool to tilt +/45° and fully rotate 360°. This action is designed to improve the machine’s efficiency for a variety of working methods, increasing the productivity of the operator through the automation of difficult movements.

Emiliana Serbatoi launches diesel tank line Emiliana Serbatoi is launching its new Carrytank Pick-up diesel tank line specifically designed to be easily installed on the back of a pick-up vehicle. The new range further extends the Italian company’s product offering for diesel transportation. Emiliana Serbatoi specialises in the manufacture of tanks and advanced fuel solutions for the safe storage, transport, management and supply of fuels and liquids in general.

The new range is a radical redesign of the original Carrytank models – the tank’s hip has been modified and the base has been narrowed to allow easy installation between the wheel arches on the back of a pick-up vehicle. Additionally, internal breakwater bulkheads guarantee more stability.

Sany’s new wheeled excavator SY155W is its first mobile excavator designed specifically for the European Union market. Powered by a Deutz engine, the 14tonne unit also has a ZF driveline, Bosch Rexroth hydraulics and a two-piece boom. The 6.7litre Cummins QSB6.7 engine produces 122kW of power at 2300rpm. To transport, the SY155W is just under 7.7m wide and 3.2m high.

Around 95% of the SY155W is completed in China and then the machine is shipped to Sany’s German facility in Bedberg for final addition of options and some systems. This should change in the near future, said Ronald Ziegler, sales director for excavators. It will be more beneficial to totally knock-down the basic machine in China and re-assemble in Germany. This would allow more innovations with European-made options for European clients, he said.

Magni RTH 13.26 SH telescopic handler Magni is unveiling its RTH 13.26 SH telescopic handler which is designed to lift 13tonnes on the stabilisers.

President Riccardo Magni said the machine can also carry 13tonnes on tyres and the company is offering special axles and tyres.

“The machine is built for jobs that do not require a big crane and it compares to cranes of 30-35tonnes, as it can lift 2tonnes at a 21m reach,” Magni added.

Atlas Copco adds two new light tower models Atlas Copco is adding two new models to its HiLight LED light tower range, the just-launched Z3+ and the soon-to-be-available E3+.

The HiLight Z3+ offers run times of up to 32 hours, an extended lifespan, minimal maintenance and low operational costs. It is powered by lithium-ion batteries and provides enhanced illumination for metropolitan construction sites, outdoor events and industrial areas.

Atlas Copco says it produces zero noise during operation and the absence of engine emissions ensure full environmental compliance in urban locations.

The HiLight E3+, which is suitable for road construction and events, has a polyethylene (PE) covering to make it more robust. It offers 15% more powerful lighting than its predecessor, the HiLight E3.

Up to ten of the new HiLightE3+

models can be connected in a chain using a single power source. It will be available for orders at the end of May. The two new launches represent an advance in terms of what is achievable with a battery-powered light tower, according to Félix Gómez, product marketing manager for light towers at Atlas Copco’s power and flow division.

“Before selecting the battery type, we undertook extensive R&D to ensure we would provide our customers with the best-in-class performance they expect – not just in terms of running hours, but also reliability, ease-of-use and total cost of ownership,” said Gómez.

He added that the HiLight Z3+ offers a yearly reduction of 1tonne of CO2 emissions and diesel savings of more than 1,000litres.

launch of the world’s first hybrid mixer pump, the Magnum MK28E. The truck runs on diesel but the drum is powered

“It can pump 15m3 of concrete fully electrically, which equates to two drums of concrete and then you will start to need the engine,” explained Christian Simader, head of research and development for Zoomlion CIFA Germany.

MK28E has a 7m³ drum and a 28m-long boom with the last two sections made of carbon to reduce the weight. The electricallypowered mixer pump can be used when the truck’s diesel engine is switched off. Liebherr’s innovative piling rigs Liebherr is unveiling innovative new equipment for piling and diaphragm wall work in the shape of its LB16, LB45 and LSC8-18 models. These are aimed at structural works and are said to offer key performance gains over earlier generation equipment from the firm.

Arguably the most notable is the LB16 piling rig, which features all-electric power. With its large upperstructure, the machine has plenty of room for a battery stack and is able to run for a full 10-hour shift before needing a recharge, which can then be carried out overnight.

Concrete results with Maturix

Formwork specialist Paschal is now offering real-time concrete curing measurement using Maturix, a new system developed in Denmark. The system uses an ordinary and inexpensive wire that is permanently embedded into the concrete during pouring.

Concrete strength analysis and monitoring is carried out by wireless radio transmitters. This allows both improved planning and real-time monitoring independent of location and time, according to both companies.

The optimal time for dismantling formwork is determined. The user receives a convenient notification as soon as the target value has been reached or if there is too much difference in the internal temperature.

To guarantee the best possible concrete quality, the concrete temperature can be controlled and adjusted from any location by means of heating and cooling systems. The Maturix software is a web-based application that can be accessed from anywhere.

When the concrete is cured and the formwork is to be moved, the wire is simply cut off close to the concrete face. A new wire is effortlessly installed into the measuring unit, ready to be embedded into a new pour as needed.

etalgalante Carmix is adding to its range of self-loading concrete mixers with the Carmix 45FX, the biggest one yet with a production capacity of 4.5m3 of concrete. This joins the Carmix 25 FX with a capacity of 2.5m3 and the Carmix ONE which produces 1m3.

“We make two different lines: small mobile batching plants and the simpler, self-loading line.

This is something in between,” said Metalgalante Carmix marketing director Manuela Galante.

“It is very simple to use but we have installed a load cell system, so it gives the same quality as a batching plant.”

The Cougar SC-130 and the SR-85 are Soilmec’s new stars at bauma 2019 Soilmec is celebrating 50 years in the ground engineering equipment business with the launch of several products, the most exciting of which are the Cougar SC-130 hydromill, the SR-85 hydraulic drilling rig and a new cab design which will now be rolled out on all its new machines.

The Cougar SC-130, which can excavate down to depths of 70m is the successor to the SC-120 which was used on Copenhagen’s CityRingen and supplied by Soilmec’s parent the Trevi Group. It has new features aimed to improve its operation.

One improvement on the SC-130 is the addition of flaps on the side of the excavating section which can be moved in or out to correct the verticality of the excavation. Another is the addition of high-pressure filters which can remove any bentonite that finds its way into the hydraulic oil, therefore preventing the machine from failing.

The SR-85 hydraulic drilling rig is the big sister of the SR75, which has been Soilmec’s best seller over the past two

or three years, according to the company’s marketing executive Pietro Manenti. The big difference between the SR-85 and the SR-75 is the new machine’s undercarriage: it is heavier to provide it more stability and hence heavier lifting and it can also be removed for transit.

The removeable undercarriage means that the machine can weigh in at under 50tonnes, which is important for the US market, according

to Manenti: “In the US it is very expensive to transport loads over 50 tonnes. With this solution our customers can have the range of this machine but with cheaper transport.”

Soilmec’s new cab boasts a raft of improvements all designed to improve comfort for the operator. The grill across the cab’s front screen – to protect against falling rocks – has been removed and replaced with laminated glass.

Pilosio says that the system’s durability has been improved thanks to a galvanised finish. The PVC profile positioned on the upper part of the aluminum beams has improved thickness and ductility. The new beam-prop stirrup, designed to connect any type of prop - steel or aluminum Slabprop 2.0 - in any position under the beam, is a great addition to the range, according to the company.

Carmix Bagger mini-silo The Carmix Bagger is a new, mini-silo from Italian mobile concrete mixing specialist Metalgalante Carmix. Compatible with all Carmix machines, and designed to improve productivity, the silo has a capacity of 3m3.

As well as speeding up the loading process, the Carmix Bagger ensures accuracy of mix production, says Metalgalante Carmix. The machine includes a load-cell that weighs the quality of materials loaded which means that both big and normal-sized bags of cement can be used.

After loading, a feed screw carries the contents into a Carmix batching plant. The whole process is fully autonomous with each operation controlled by a 50

hydraulic motor, fed by an engine.

This means that the Carmix Bagger can be used in worksites where there is no electric power.

“By using our self-loading mixers with the bagger, we can optimise efficiency on the jobsite,” said Manuela Galante, marketing director at Metalgalante Carmix.

The existing IFC interface for importing has been extended by adding the export function to ensure the exchange of information in the multitrade open BIM process between

PASCHAL UPGRADES ITS PPL 12.0 SOFTWARE F Layher presents Steel Deck LW Layher is introducing its Steel Deck LW, a scaffolding deck designed to save weight and ensure better handling.

The company said the deck could save up to 10% in weight, so for example a 500metre façade scaffold could be around 500kg lighter. The system cuts scaffolding construction workload, improves ergonomics, reduces transport costs and

Palfinger’s digital bridge surveys Crane and access platform specialist Palfinger is exploiting digital technologies to find new ways of doing business. The most radical among these is the creation of a digital inspection service aimed at bridges and other civil engineering structures.

Palfinger Structural Inspection (Strucinspect) is a joint venture between the manufacturer, Vienna Consulting Engineers (VCE) and surveying specialist the Angst Group. The service will combine unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), multispectral sensors, artificial intelligence and three-dimensional data processing to carry out condition surveys in far shorter time periods and without closing any areas to traffic. According to Palfinger, a process that would take a few weeks can now be done in 72 hours.

“We are no longer just a manufacturer of bridge inspection units; we are offering

comprehensive solutions to our customers,” said Andreas Klauser, CEO of Palfinger. There are more than 40,000 road bridges and more than 25,000 railway bridges that will need inspecting in Germany and Austria over the next five-to-eight years, he added.

Strucinpsect will use data collection technology, 3D data processing and AI-assisted data

analysis to create a digital 3D twin of the structure, providing a precise view of its exterior and interior state … as well as providing a prediction of its service life. CIFA OFFERS A LONGER BOOM

IFA’s new K67H concrete pump has a 67m-long boom, making it the longest machine on the market to be mounted on a six-axle truck.

“There have been attempts in the past by various companies to build bigger machines and they have succeeded but all those machines were just show machines,” said Christian Simader, head of research and development for Zoomlion CIFA Germany. “This is not a show machine, it is really usable. We have already sold our first machine to Finland and we are in negotiation with other customers at the moment.”

The machine weighs less than 60tonnes, it has standard support and a flexible control system so that it can be used for

lots of applications. “It can be used if you need 67m but you can also use it if you need less reach and have less space, by extending the legs less,” said Simader.

CIFA has been able to keep the weight of the machine down while increasing the boom length by employing its Carbotech technology. The last four sections of the K67H’s seven-section boom is made of carbon fibre to reduce its weight and hence increase its reach. Another important feature, according to CIFA, is the X-style triple telescopic extension for front stabilisation which makes the machine able to position itself safely, even in confined spaces or in the presence of obstacles. www.cifa.com

Paschal’s lightweight Neorast is in top form Paschal says that its Neorast formwork combines the versatility of its tried and tested universal Modular formwork with all the properties of much lighter formwork.

Because the elements of Neorast are small and weigh only 40kg, around 25% less than the Modular system, they can be assembled and moved by two people without a crane or other transport aids. Alternatively, if the formwork is to be transported by crane, the crane attachments of the Paschal’s universal Modular formwork/GE can be attached to the

side bars of the lightweight formwork.

A further bonus of the new formwork system is the low frame height of only 7.5cm. This ensures that storage and transport volumes remain particularly low.

Despite weighing less than the Modular system, Neorast boasts significantly higher fresh concrete pressure properties, according to Paschal. At 50kN/m², the fresh concrete pressure is around 40% higher than with the Paschal universal Modular formwork/GE.

opcon Positioning has developed a new automated version of its 3D modular solution for excavation. The new X-53x automatic package utilises the same proven components of the original system but now features an additional automated control.

Andy McCann, machine control business development manager at Topcon Positioning explained that the new package adds automatic features, rather than the light bar indicator used previously. He said, “We added a valve block to the machine to stop it from over-digging. Now it will lock out and not dig below grade.”

He continued, “We have two GPS antenna on the back to locate the machine and sensors pick up pitch and roll of the boom and dipper.”

Meanwhile, the system also provides an audible warning to the operator of any danger

zones to avoid. The system is also said to reduce operator fatigue when digging to grade in flat, stepped or sloped applications.

Pavement layer thickness gets easier with the Pave-TM system from Moba

Moba says its is seeing strong interest in its new Pave-TM system. Moba claims that PaveTM is the world’s only system for automatic layer thickness measurement in road construction.

The system constantly displays the thickness of the paved asphalt layer and by doing so reduces manual measurements.

The new CSMT-300 ultrasonic sensor - developed in-house specialises in layer thickness and enables precise work at tolerance limits. This further increases the accuracy of the system, according to Moba.

The system has been adopted by several original equipment manufacturers, including Dynapac, Bomag and Ammann, says Nik Giehl, product manager for PaveTM and leader of the system’s development team. “I’m proud that people are showing such an increased interest in Pave-TM after winning the award,” he said.

Trimble’s packages for managing site data Trimble says that its WorksManager Software is a cloud-based application that provides extra tools for contractors managing data and technology on construction sites. The new Grade Control Platform version 1.9 can offer fully automatic guidance for excavator tiltrotator attachments. on grade when using a tiltrotator. Trimble Earthworks controls the boom and bucket of the excavator as well as the tilt angle of the attachment. The operator controls the stick of the excavator and rotation of the tiltrotator.

Meanwhile, the added capability for Universal Total Station (UTS) allows contractors using graders to achieve fine working. RUBBLE MASTER to launch photo parts ordering RUBBLE MASTER is previewing a new app that enables users in the field to identify a machine part that needs replacing via a smartphone camera, and then order a new one.

The RM Original Part Scout app is due to be launched by the crusher and screener manufacturer at the end of Q3 this year in Android and iOS versions and can also be used with tablets and

laptops. The app identifies the photo taken by the user. If it is identified with 95% accuracy the user can message their head office to order the part straight away. If the level of accuracy is less than 95%, the app offers images of the most likely matches for the user to identify the part themselves.

to the RUBBLE MASTER online store, where they can check on its availability and place an order.

“The app is useful for people in the field who don’t have a manual handy, and will help make life easier for our dealers and customers,” said Harald Kussegg, RUBBLE MASTER sales support parts and services manager.

Optimising site logistics with Topcon A new package from Topcon Positioning is said to help optimise site operations in road paving applications. Called Pavelink, this cloud-based logistics application is intended to connect site professionals working at the various stages of the paving process.

The tool provides a link between the asphalt plants, delivery trucks, company office, and paving site. This allows users to monitor asphalt deliveries by truck from the plant, as well as materials grades and temperatures.

Ulrich Hermansky, CMO at Topcon Positioning said, “The system is really important regarding BIM processes.”

The software as a service (SaaS) application is designed to integrate with existing planning and management tools to improve and advance efficiency. Using the package allows site personnel to tackle problems such as delays to material deliveries or potential paver stoppages and finding solutions quickly or even before they arise.

Trimble’s new tool offers tilt compensation

rimble’s new Siteworks Software version 1.1 now offers GNSS tilt compensation in standing, walking and vehicle modes.

The firm says that this is a key development and Steve Binenedetter, product manager for Siteworks said, “The biggest feature is tilt compensation. It allows for faster measurements and faster stakeout because you don’t have to worry about the pole being plumb.”

He explained, “It uses inertial measurement units (IMUs) and it’s not subject to metallic or magnetic interference and it doesn’t

require any calibration either.”

The package can also be retrofitted to existing tools and he added, “This is an upgrade so any unit in the field can get this.”

The package runs on Windows 10 but can now also be used with the Android operating system and surveyors are able to capture points without levelling the pole. The firm says that as the package supports the Android operating system, contractors are able to select the field device that best fits their needs and budget.

Smart Antenna, surveyors can take measurements faster. There are three modes available that support tilt compensation, so contractors can record accurate points while standing, walking or driving the site in a vehicle.

Tilt compensation in vehicle mode is designed to capture higher accuracy measurements on steeper slopes from a moving vehicle, and more accurate volume measurements to save time and money on material planning. Continental’s ContiLogger device Continental is helping operators to keep tyre costs under control, with a new service concept called ContiLogger, based on a device that allows users to monitor and understand the working environment in which tyres operate. According to Adrian Leu from the smart service solutions team at Continental’s specialty tyres division: “Users can do an analysis, go back to the customer and then customise recommendation reports based on the findings.”

ContiLogger Live allows users to put a telematics device on any truck, anywhere in the world: “This remote monitoring and analysis solution provides information on speed distance, elevation change, maximum distance per hour analysis and tonnes kilometre per hour calculation,” said Leu. Leica Geosystems, part of the Hexagon group, is extending the use of its MC1 software to excavators, whose activities can now be tracked in real time. It has also issued an upgraded Leica ConX web interface.

Released two years ago, ConX is a cloud solution that creates a connected system across construction sites, linking operators, foremen and managers on a single digital platform. They can share and visualise positioning, reference model and constructed data, while other machine control solutions connected to the interface can remotely receive and share information.

In the upgraded version of ConX, a new 3D visualisation of the worksite is created from data aggregation. This enables contours of the site to be shown so that, for example, an indication of the volume of earth to be moved is available immediately.

“I can estimate how much time I need to complete the task. I don’t need to get information from the field on a daily or weekly basis, which has been traditional,” said Sten Kristensen, machine control division product management director. “The beauty about this [system] is that the information could come from 10 excavators, 10 dozers or 10 dump trucks. They all report back.”

TOPCON’S SOPHISTICATED HEAD-UP DISPLAY T opcon Positioning is introducing its sophisticated LN-100 head-up display (HUD) system. This unit operates hands-free and is voiceactivated, providing visual layout directions using the HUD glasses. The system can guide the operator when carrying out layout work at a construction site. The firm says that this wearable tool allows customers to use both hands to accurately mark layout points.

The device can use simple voice commands for its operation, allow it to help

complete construction layout tasks according to the firm.

Volz’s digital deal Volz Consulting has agreed a partnership with BOMAG and Dynapac for digitalisation of road construction processes.

The partners say that the aim of this cooperation is for the marketing and further development of existing digital process solutions. The partnership between the companies is intended to deliver the most integrated process optimisation approach for the road construction market.

Machine control for compact equipment from Trimble Trimble is adding additional upgrades to its new Earthworks GO! package, which is designed for use on compact machines. The package offers 2D grade control and can be used with grading attachments on compact machines. The company claims that the package means that contractors can boost grading accuracy when using skid steer loaders or compact loaders fitted with grading attachments. The system can connect wirelessly to a smartphone, offering contractors a sophisticated earthmoving tool. The package is designed for use by contractors in applications such as general construction, site preparation and utility work. It applications include uses for grading flat and simple slopes.

Laser guidance allows users to grade or cut profiles quickly and accurately and the firm claims that the package is easy to learn and use. Productivity can be increased by up to 20% and the package includes software that provides tools showing how best to install, commission and utilise the system. The package allows users to save a machine profile in the system, so that settings can be retained. This means that the package can be switched from one machine to another, without having to replicate set-up procedures each time.

Packed with patented technologies, the ECGenius combines high power capacity, efficiency and costs less than hydromechanical or hydrostatic solutions, according to Bonfiglioli.

“The combination of these three benefits are typically not possible with conventional technology,” said Andrea Torcelli, Bonfiglioli’s chief technical officer. “To have fully mechanical, continuously variable at the right cost is potentially disruptive.”

High-speed motor and gearbox from Bosch Rexroth Bosch Rexroth is showing a new compact electric motor combined with a new two-speed gearbox.

The company has developed the eGFT 8000 series electric motor with outputs ranging from 75-180kW; the motor’s diameter remains the same, while its length can be scaled up to provide the differing outputs.

This is combined with the new two-speed GFE280 gearbox that can handle input speeds of up to 14,000rpm and has an output of 630Nm. The gearbox has an internal clutch and is fully centralised with the electric motor.

It is optimised for a 26tonne truck’s load cycle, with production planned for 2020.

The ECGenius is based on a toroidal CVT system, which sees power transferred between input and output discs via rollers. This is not a new technology, but what CVTCORP has done, says Torcelli is to find new ways to overcome the various problems with such systems.

“The genius thing is how the control has been designed, how simple and robust the system for controlling the speed into the cartridge is,” said Torcelli. One of CVTCORP’s improvements is the means of transferring power. Comer Industries’ new axle range Comer Industries is promising increased efficiency and enhanced power density in a more compact size with its new range of axles. The FC08 ‘compact’ range has been designed to meet the requirements of earthmoving equipment – as well as agricultural machines, Comer’s traditional market sector.

According to Davide Gasparini, Comer’s business development manager for power

trains, the axles are 15% lighted than similar ones. Wheeled loaders would be an ideal application for the axles, said Gasparini, but they could be used with other machines too.

The axle will come in two versions, the FC08 and the FC09-HD for heavier machines.

The FC08 is suitable for wheeled loaders with an empty vehicle weight of up to 5.4tonnes, has a dynamic load of 5.3tonnes and delivers a torque to the wheels

of 1,800daNm. The FC08-HD supplies a maximum torque of 2,000daNm. Alongside the axles is Comer’s is developing a new transmission range for electric vehicles, the I-S428 range, designed to combine with the FC08 axles. The I-S428 will be available in a single drop and double drop version, with an input speed of up to 9,000rpm and a maximum power of 25kW.

olvo Penta’s Stage V emissions-compliant engines are said to have proven extremely promising in field tests, boasting fuel consumption reductions of up to 5%, compared to their Stage IV predecessors. This not only reduces CO2 output but also the total cost of ownership.

With a power range from 105 to 585kW, Volvo Penta Stage V engines are said to be specifically engineered to give customers optimum productivity, uptime and total cost of ownership, and are developed to offer ease of installation, operation and maintenance.

“We are keen to demonstrate

to our customers that Volvo Penta is continuing to lead the way when it comes to engine and power systems innovation, most recently with EU Stage V,” says Johan Inden, president of Region Europe at Volvo Penta.

“We are already seeing evidence that our customers understand this. Over the last three years, the Volvo Penta Industrial segment has increased its annual sales by an average of 33%.”

Volvo Penta Stage V range provides improved productivity through an engine and exhaust aftertreatment system that has been designed to work together seamlessly. Among other claimed benefits, this maximises passive regeneration during

normal operation and, therefore, removes the need for stand-still regeneration. Uptime has also been boosted by improved oil change service intervals, which have been doubled from 500 to 1,000 hours. In addition, Volvo Penta has championed ease-of-installation by ensuring commonality between different emission levels. In addition to off-road, Volvo Penta recently launched its first Stage V engine for mobile gensets: the D16.

Caterpillar is unveiling its reconfigured C13B engine.

Previously announced for the agricultural sector, it has now been adapted for the aggregates and construction industries with an engine-mounted aftertreatment package.

Compared to its predecessor in the category, Caterpillar said that it has increased the C13B’s power output by 20% and torque by 19%. These improvements make it the equivalent of a 15litre powerplant, according to the company.

Additionally, the aftertreatment package is 65% smaller and 63% lighter than its predecessors. Caterpillar has also reduced the number of interface connections between the engine and aftertreatment package by around 50%.

The C13B is “excellent for a range of applications, including rock crushers, screeners, rock drills, piledrivers, chippers and grinders,” said product marketing manager for the nine to 13litre market, James Schnuriger.

The C13B is certified to Stage IV Final status for the US, Korea and Japan. And the company is already taking production orders, said Schnuriger.

MTU shows off Stage 5 powerplants Rolls-Royce is developing a new range of its EU Stage V certified MTU engines which have already been delivered to construction equipment manufacturers including Tadano, Hidromek, Kato and Hyster. The Series 1000, 1100, 1300 and 1500 engines are based on Daimler commercial vehicle engines and cover a power range of 115 to 480kW. The new limits are achieved by internal engine enhancements and by adding an SCR system and an additional diesel particulate filter. CUMMINS’ ELECTRIC PROTOTYPE A

s part of the industrywide drive towards lower emissions, Cummins is unveiling a prototype electric mini excavator.

The 3.2tonne vehicle remains a work in progress, with changes to its shape already in the works, said marketing communications director Steve Nendick.

The prototype has a ‘tail’ behind the cab “because the battery pack we’ve put in there is not exactly for this application”. At present, it has eight BM4.4E modules

connected in series to provide total energy of 35kWh. This is designed to suffice for a full work shift and to be capable of being recharged in three hours.

Mounted near the base of the excavator, the Cumminsdesigned and built battery modules use Li-ion technology to achieve a higher energy density, together with proprietary control technology to maintain the battery stateof-charge for a longer zero emissions operating time.

The mini excavator will likely go into production around 2021 and the excavator’s zero emissions will make it particularly suited to urban sites.

diesel had been king in the construction vehicle sector for the past 100 years, it would cease to be in the next 100.

Deutz adds LPG versions to diesel range Deutz is launching a three-cylinder variant of the TCD 2.9 diesel engine called TCD 2.2. Both engines will be made available as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) versions named G2.2 and G2.9.

Engine manufacturer Perkins is keeping its customers’ options open when it comes to the next generation of hybrids, unveiling three hybrid variants: electric, mechanical and hydraulic.

Oliver Lythgoe, of the UK company’s product concept marketing team said, “We know other people are showing hybrids and that some people pick one ‘flavour’, saying ‘This is it’, but we recognise that there’s a huge variety of different sizes of machines and how they operate: their operating cycles, how they use power and how cyclic that usage is.”

The electric version uses a generator or motor to recover energy, for storage in lithium-ion batteries. The advantage of this is that a huge amount of energy can be stored for a long time; the disadvantage is that lithium-ion batteries are expensive, take up a lot of space and release energy only slowly.

Mechanical hybrids, where energy is stored in a flywheel, have the advantage of being relatively small and can release energy suddenly, but that energy degrades over time because the flywheel loses power through friction.

Kohler focuses on two engine categories Kohler is introducing new hybrid engines that address what the company believes are two critical power thresholds in the industry.

The engine manufacturer is showing two new K-HEM units with power outputs of 19kW and 56kW. The first is important as engines above 19kW require a diesel particulate filter (DPF) under Stage V legislation, while engines more powerful than 56kW must have selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

The new K-HEM 2504 runs alongside the K-HEM 1003 launched last November. The K-HEM 2504 is a hybrid unit generating a combination of electrical and mechanical power consisting of a KDI 2504TCR 55.4 kW diesel engine that complies with Stage V legislation and a 48Volt electric motor that guarantees 19.5kW peak power and 9kW continued power.

The KDI 2504TCR engine combined with electrical power can equal, if not exceed, the performance offered by higher spec engines in terms of horsepower. It also has a smaller footprint, however Kohler said that its hybrid solutions are not designed to offer a simple downsizing, but rather to ‘rightsize’ units for each specific application.

erco is launching digital solutions aimed at improving its undercarriage lifetime and reducing operational cost per hour for customers. Berco is launching Bopis Life, a cloud-based undercarriage measuring solution that allows its customers to have immediate diagnosis of its undercarriage lifetime and performance and be able to improve maintenance costs and stocks.

Wear data is collected in the field using an ultrasonic device and uploaded to the platform via Berco’s dedicated app. The data will also be used for Berco’s research and development purposes in its quest to find new technological solutions for improving undercarriage performance in the field. “This is a solution set to bring transparency to our customers, allowing them to

To guarantee better performance on the lubricated track chains, Berco has also developed a digitalised manufacturing system that guarantees better quality and reliability, aiming for less friction on mechanical components and less wear. The digital assembling system acquires and manages the assembly data during the process and establishes the optimal closing point of the section being assembled (ongoing control).

The new system ensures the right assembly process, avoiding situations of excess or a lack of press fit. This is made possible by a mathematical algorithm that has been developed in collaboration with Ferrara University to guarantee the right

BKT launches its largest ever tyre BKT is launching its largest ever tyre, the 3,061m diameter Earthmax SR 46, and has plans to launch even bigger products.

The new 33.00 R 51 size tyre is designed for rigid dumpers operating under adverse conditions in rocky environments such as quarries, mines, dams, and the construction sites of large building structures.

Earthmax SR 46 weighs 2,400kg and BKT says the new tyre is particularly suitable for transporting heavy loads, adding that its cut-and-chip resistance extends the product’s life.

The company says that impacts, mechanical stress, and punctures are reduced to a minimum due to the steel-belted casing, which optimises operating hours and maximises productivity.

BKT says that the entry of the new large size into its tyre line-up is a strategic choice that is in line with the trend for increasingly larger machines.

“We have been working on our radial OTR [off the road] range since it was launched in 2008, and the objective since then was to enter the giant tyre sector,” said BKT managing director Lucia Salmaso.

She added that the Earthmax SR 46 is predominantly aimed at extraction operations in territories including Asia, Africa and Australia.

In the first three months of 2020 the company plans to launch a 4m tyre that will also target the large mine and quarrying sectors.

agna Tyres is showcasing its Construction Range of tyres designed for telehandlers, skid steers and compact wheeled loaders.

Stephen van Leeuwen, sales manager at Magna Tyres, said: “The tyres serve as an addition to our current portfolio and offer a range for smaller machines.”

The MB410 is designed for backhoe loaders and compact wheeled loaders. The tyre

comes with reinforced sidewall and strong nylon casing to provide improved resistance to road hazards and extend tyre life.

Additionally, Magna’s MR400 is engineered for backhoe loaders and telehandlers in construction applications. “The MR400 offers high load capacity, is puncture resistant and has a longer lifetime,” Leeuwen

Meanwhile, the M-Skid2 is built for skidsteer loaders in construction applications and has an extended tyre life due to its reinforced sidewall and strong nylon casing.

Solid tyre for harshest conditions Alliance Tire Group (ATG) is launching the LHD 500 SDS solid tyre for extreme working conditions. The company says SDS stands for Severe Duty Solid and it has designed the tyre for the most demanding applications such as scrap metal recycling.

The special tread compounds from which the tyre is made protects against cuts, but also ensure wear is even and low with minimal heat build-up. In addition, their high lug-to-void ratio provides excellent machine stability and increases the life of the product, claims the company. A single row of apertures around the side of the tyre provides some ride comfort and also helps minimise heat build-up.

The tyre is built for drop-down rim operation, with three sizes currently available: tyre size 14.00-24 for rim 10.00-24, tyre size 14.00-25 for rim 10.00-25, and tyre size 17.5-25 for rim 14.00-25.

Evonik, manufacturer of Dynavis oils and lubricant additives for OEMS, is now highlighting its own name and not its well-known products.

The change is to move the name Evonik more to the forefront of the minds of clients in all sectors, says the company.

Also for the first time, Evonik will be displaying its latest industrial technology, NUFLUX, that enables lubricant companies to formulate industrial gear oils which not only deliver benefits such as long service life and lower operating temperature, but also are cost-efficient, according to Evonik.

NUFLUX formulations with Evonik’s NEXBASE as base oil meets industry standards such as DIN 51517-3, AGMA 9005-F16, AIST 224 (formerly US Steel 224) and many demanding OEM requirements.

According to Evonik, all five available NUFLUX formulations for ISO VG 150, 220, 320, 460 and 680 show improvements in scuffing and micro-pitting, as well as lower operation temperatures.
