Democratisation of technology A very different global future is emerging where a successful business must have a large amount of the right data and access to the best technology. But for long-term success a business must create value for its customers, says Ivan Di Federico, formerly chief strategy officer and now president and chief executive officer of Topcon Positioning Systems. He talks to Anthony Oliver, host of the Infrastructure podcast Oliver: You were chief strategy officer of Topcon Positioning Systems for 12 years before becoming chief executive this year, taking over from Ray O’Connor. What excites you about your new role?

Di Federico: We see this as a pivotal moment in our history because many things are changing, especially from an economic perspective, and there is also a lot of confusion. That is why when I took over my new role I started programmes to focus on our roots, focus on what really drives the business. And that is to create value for our customers, be they in agriculture or infrastructure sectors. For our growing populations, we need to produce more food efficiently and build better infrastructure, especially for transportation. This often means doing more with less, and doing it more efficiently.

Oliver: One of the terms you use a lot is ‘democratisation of technology’. What exactly is this?

Di Federico: Technology is important because it allows us to innovate for a better life, a better future. But for a wider use of new technologies by customers it must not be too complicated to use and not too expensive. By making it easier to use and increasingly less expensive, it will be taken up by the largest pool of people. By people who want to grow a modern society. This is democratisation of technology.

Oliver: How does Topcon Positioning Systems maintain its culture of innovation and its entrepreneurial spirit?

Di Federico: The company leadership allows people to propose changes where

they believe changes can be made for the betterment of the company, including new products. We give them the freedom to explore, to touch and, importantly, to make mistakes and learn from them. We encourage and foster these types of people.

We hold around 5,000 ongoing patents and create about 10 a month.

Oliver: The competitive edge can often mean innovating faster. What might be Topcon’s strategy over the next few years?

Di Federico: Thinking ahead ten years is really like looking at science fiction right now. Better to focus on only a few years ahead, even only two years. Strategies surrounding connectivity are important.

Scanning objects and processes can produce millions of points and create big data. But this is only a piece of the story. You need

Oliver: Topcon is global but based in California and has a Japanese parent company. How upsetting are the US administration’s changing trade policies for global supply chains?

Di Federico: We continue to observe the situation. One thing for sure is that we are set in terms of assets, with factories in North America, in Europe and in Japan.

But this is the best way to serve and provide value to our customers worldwide.

We need to observe the situation as it unfolds and then consider the best courses of action. But our customers should not be in anyway worried because we have been analysing the situation from day one. We have ideas, plans, should we need them but it is too early. Regardless, we will always do what it right for our customers.

Oliver: How are you helping your customers transition to net-zero operations?

At the moment all these technologies are siloed, they can’t necessarily communicate to each other. There are no overarching NSA standards* which would improve operators’ workflow.

The most successful companies, in the next two years even, will be those which simplify the workflow, make it manageable for operators or jobsite managers. If we don’t go down this route we will not benefit from the potential of these new technologies. This also gets back to my points about democratisation of technologies. Make it simple and the system makes decisions by itself.

Oliver: You recently took over as chief executive from Ray O’Connor who is now chairman of Topcon Positioning Systems.

How might your style differ from his?

Di Federico: First of all, Ray has been my mentor and boss for 20 years and is my friend. We still talk every day. Every person globalhighways.com | aggbusiness.com

Di Federico: Integration of technologies can greatly help this. This can help operators use their machines more accurately, work faster and so use less fuel.

This is inherently good. And as we move into the next generation of technologies, where the interface between the vehicle, the operator and our 3D technology comes closer and closer, we’ll be able to measure efficiency more accurately. We will be able to see relationships more clearly and make workflow adjustments to improve net-zero working.

Oliver: Ray O’Connor has talked a lot about the challenge of finding the right people to bring into Topcon Positioning Systems. Is this still the case?

Di Federico: Yes and no. It’s not easy to find the right people because maybe there are more sexy industries around which are absorbing most of the talent. Nonetheless, we still are very lucky. We hire engineers but they actually aren’t only engineers, they are in a product creation function, a blend of sophisticated management ability with a deep understanding of market knowledge overlaying their technological insights – all avenues to innovate something of value for our customer.

In some ways, being an engineer is an

old term. It recalls things that might be only mechanical. For Topcon Positioning Systems, being an engineer has at least three layers to it. One is the physical layer of the product, then there is the software layer of the product and finally the layer of information and data in the cloud which can be harvested as we need it, using artificial intelligence. We are at the forefront of this at the moment.

Oliver: You are an aeronautical engineering graduate from Pisa University in Italy and initially worked on the Eurofighter project over there. Do you still hanker after the tactile feeling of, say, a ‘good widget’?

is different, but the critical values remain.

We care for the people who bring the good ideas and innovation to Topcon Positioning Systems, give them the opportunity to work in teams, to fail and still support them. All the while, there is a relentless attention to the needs of the customer, talking to customers. No matter which role you have, you have to be there and support and listen. These are the things that I really learned from Ray and remain with me night and day. Ray certainly has had an impact and I would be proud to continue along these lines.

Di Federico: I think of widgets every night! So I bother my engineers every single moment with some ideas and things they need to try out for me. It’s a fantastic relationship, I need them and they need me. You should have seen what happened just this morning. There were three of us who invented something which I’m really confident will be worth investigating further. That’s the spirit I’m talking about. It is about solving a particular problem. Underneath this relationship is the spirit of sharing knowledge. It’s about motivation which drives people to work on a project night and day. It also depends on leadership.

Oliver: What would you say were some of the transformational technological breakthroughs for Topcon Positioning Systems or the sector in general?

Di Federico: I’ve seen many of those and I have many patents myself. But imagine what the world was like before the laser? Laser light and laser technology has enabled so much for the construction industry. In the 1980s it made a dramatic revolution in terms of precision and this has been evolving. We now have a 3D laser where we can pinpoint anything. The laser can pinpoint to the millimetre level. Not only that, you go onsite, drill a hole and then use a laser to measure the hole. And all of a sudden this 3D drawing comes up and changes everything, because now it’s virtual but real. We have connected the virtual world of a drawing to the real world and vice versa. These are the innovative things that really inspire me.

The other thing is GPS and what it has made possible since 2000. The technology can position something like a point or a line globally, in 3D. ynapac and Leica Geosystems are launching automated steering and screed edge control for asphalt pavers.

Together, the two firms are introducing a new integrated interface for auto-steering and screed edge control system for the SD25 and XD25 Highway Paver series. The auto-steering

and screed edge control features are being enabled on Dynapac asphalt pavers with the Leica iCON pave solution. This partnership aims to enhance the precision and efficiency of asphalt paving operations by combining pavers from Dynapac with the machine control technology from Leica Geosystems.

In addition, the integration of new auto-steering and edge control features will enable pavers to follow stringline design models with millimetre accuracy, eliminating the need for traditional string-and-pins methods and reducing costs, while improving productivity.

Trimble exhibits remote roadbuilding tech Trimble has exhibited its advanced, remote roadbuilding technology.

The US tech giant demonstrated the system with a Vögele Super 2100-5 X tracked road-paving machine.

Trimble regional sales manager DACH, Martin Wagener, said the control system utilises two masts and if the road gets narrower, the width of the screed can be controlled remotely.

“The operator drives the machine, but we control the screed-spreading process,” he added.

New opportunities for technology Scott Crozier, Trimble’s vice president, Civil Construction Field Systems, discussed the firm’s strategy for construction

rimble is one of the leaders in the field for connected construction technology, with an impressive share of the market as well as a reputation for delivering some of the most sophisticated solutions. The company is keen to retain its role as a leader and is also reinforcing its position in key market segments.

Scott Crozier is vice president, Civil Construction Field Systems at Trimble.

He says that the company is taking a new focus on the earthmoving segment, which has long been a core part of its business in construction. He thinks that there are still considerable opportunities to expand the firm’s presence in this segment and also deliver efficient solutions to customers.

He commented, “Now’s the time to give earthmoving a boost.”

Meanwhile, the company is also broadening out its sales and support operation from the Sitech business. Many of the Sitech outlets are run by Caterpillar dealers and Crozier said, “Sitech is hugely successful as we’re partnering with the biggest machinery manufacturer.”

However, Trimble has recognised that machinery customers may want to access sales and service support through a wider range of outlets. He said, “It’s another path for customers.”

A key change in the sector is that there is more interoperability between machines from different manufacturers, and their respective telematics systems, as well as between the connected construction technologies used by contractors. Both equipment manufacturers and technology providers have recognised this change and

adapted their technologies to meet this need.

Crozier explained that many contractors are now running mixed fleets of machines, as well as connected construction systems from all three of the main suppliers. He commented, “Now customers want to be open to all technologies.”

Caterpillar and Trimble have a successful partnership that has now been in place since 2002 and recently deepened that relationship. But at the same time, Trimble wants to ensure that customers using machines from other manufacturers can also benefit from the use of the latest connected construction technology. Crozier explained, “What we don’t want to do is block features and say that’s just for Cat equipment.”

A key development from the firm is a new mobile mapping system that can be used to scan the road surface. Crozier said that this offers considerable benefits for road construction and can help to maximise road smoothness and minimise the quantities of material used.

The benefits of machine control systems in road construction are well established and he added, “We say use 3D for milling and then 2D for paving. It’s the optimum way to work.”

Trimble is also expanding its operations in new territories. Crozier said that there is considerable market potential in India for road rehabilitation work and for the use of connected construction technology to deliver high-quality results. Many of the new highways were designed to tight specifications, although finish quality was variable.

With some of the new highways needing repairs and maintenance much sooner than intended, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) approached Trimble for solutions.

Crozier explained that the issue has not been one of funding but of insufficient quality control. This is changing rapidly and he said, “The NHAI has just mandated a road quality system. They’ve been averse to mandating the use of technology before.

But now the Indian Government is making technology mandatory.”

The company says that its latest Cat Grade 3D system delivers high precision, allowing users to achieve high quality without need for reworking. The Cat Payload for Excavators package similarly helps to track productivity accurately.

The US software, hardware and services technology company showed off the tech with a driverless Kobelco SK 210 excavator being overseen by the operator of a Bomag BW213 BVC compactor.

Develon introduces new levels of innovative operating security Develon is introducing a new series of excavators strongly focused on improved operating safety levels and better fuel economy. The new units are fitted with six cameras around the machine and radar detectors also.

According to Develon, this enhanced level of safety technology can determine the difference between an inanimate obstacle and a human ... and respond accordingly. If a person is within 6m of the machine, it will slow down but, if the person comes within 3m, the technology will stop the machine operating altogether.

The DX230LC-9 is a 23tonne class crawler excavator and is being joined by the new 26tonne class DX260LC-9, with further machines to follow.

The new line-up also offers operators improved electronics and hydraulics, as well as low-emission diesel engines offering better fuel economy. The combination of these improved systems results in a 20% improvement in fuel economy overall, says Develon.

resh on the heels of launching its new articulated hauler range, Volvo CE has further expanded the line-up with the development of all-electric models. The firm says that deliveries for the new A30 and A40 battery-electric machines will commence in 2026 in selected markets, with a full roll-out of these models globally in 2027 and 2028.

The machine features a large battery that

is fixed on the machine and according to company president Melker Jernberg, “In a normal application, it’ll run for five hours.”

Apart from the electric motor and battery system in place of the diesel engine and fuel tank, the machines are the same as the other new ADTs from the firm.

Liebherr’s autonomous and remote control earthmovers Liebherr is offering its innovative autonomous wheeled loader concept as well as a novel remote control dozer package.

The highly advanced autonomous driving system for wheeled loaders is called the Liebherr Autonomous Operations and has been developed in-house.

This autonomous solution allows machines to work without an operator in the cab. The system can be used in areas that would be dangerous for an operator, such as close to a high rockface in an extraction operation for example. According to the company’s senior VP Herwig Peschl, Cat is integrating a range of products, technologies, and services to address these concerns.

The construction machinery giant says that it wants to help its customers get the most out of their fleets and products.

Group president Tony Fassino said the most-impactful technologies will focus on integrating safety tools across the whole jobsite … from the machine operator onsite, all the way back into the operations team in the office.

“Probably the most simple 26

example of that is seatbelts,” says Fassino. “Unfortunately, there is a very long history of incidents in the industry from operators not having their seatbelts on.

“If we can integrate [this problem] into the system, [it will allow] operations managers to see how many times operators don’t have their seatbelts on, to see who keeps forgetting to put their seatbelt on, and [to find out] why do they do that.”

Fassino wants to get to a position in which managers can assess: “What the pattern has been over the last week, how many incidents have we had in the last month, and how can we ensure everybody has their seatbelts on.”

L

iuGong’s commitment towards the future of battery-electric vehicles in the construction sector is exemplified by its expanded portfolio, including the new 4280DE motor grader. The batteryelectric grader’s battery pack provides fast charging within 1.6 hours and allows normal working conditions between six to 10 hours.

Meanwhile, the large capacity lithiumion phosphate battery is safe and durable.

Its development also demonstrates how new technologies and imagination go hand in hand in today’s R&D, as explained by the company’s chairman, Zeng Guang’an.

Zeng joined LiuGong when he was a 20-year-old university graduate and now has 40 years with the company. During an interview with Global Highways, he noted that innovation requires a great deal of imagination when it comes to technical development because of the incredible tools that are now available, including artificial intelligence. For example, when the Chinese government took concrete steps to support

electric vehicle development back in 2014, he understood that this could also be done for LiuGong’s machinery.

“You need imagination, dedication but also you need to invest in your ideas. This is most important for the long-term success of new technologies,” he said.

Unlike 20 years ago, digitalisation is increasingly part of the solution for maintaining good dealership relations that includes fast product and service delivery for the end user of LiuGong’s equipment.

“It is easier now to get information from customers thanks to sensors on a machine that tell of its performance in real time,” said Zeng. “We can respond quickly and pinpoint problems for the end user. This speeds up servicing for machines and can improve delivery of parts, too.”

The end user and dealers are always in the forefront of the minds of employees in LiuGong’s global regional hubs. In today’s business environment, increased speed of servicing and parts delivery are part of

“For example, in Europe there are the European Union regulations governing BEVs [battery-electric vehicles] and we have to train our dealers, service dealers and customers to be up to date with the regulations,” he said. “We must invest in this.”

Today’s business environment also now includes the recent global tariff hikes and concerns by almost all sectors of the impact this will have on international supply chains.

Nonetheless, Zeng is optimistic about the future of global trade. He is also adamant that LiuGong, which has had customers in the US for more than 50 years, will stay in the US to support them, no matter what.

Stage 3 for Bell graders Bell will start production later this year of its motor graders for Stage 3 markets after years of research, development and having prototypes onsite. Jeremiah Mokhomo, Bell Equipment product manager, explained that the Tier 3 range consists of three base models, each available in either a 4WD or 6WD configuration. The G140 is well suited to all maintenance and light to medium construction tasks. The G160, with its increased power and performance, is designed to handle heavy construction applications, while the G200 is designed for bulk earthworks and the mining industry.

“From the outset, we factored in the requirements of a sixwheel drive configuration,” said Mokhomo. “This early integration, as opposed to trying to add it to the platform later, means a betterperforming, more controllable and robust machine that is easier to maintain. The significant improvement in performance achieved by adding front-wheel drive is useful only if it is reliable for the life of the grader, so we have invested time to make sure this is the case.”

Bell motor graders are powered by Cummins engines paired with ZF transmissions. The Bell G140 is fitted with a 6.7litre Cummins engine and ZF ERGOPOWER transmission while the larger G160 and G200 are driven by a 9litre Cummins engine with the ZF cPOWER transmission. Additionally, the engines are Stage 3A certified, do not require exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and are compatible with both hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and B20 biodiesel. Bell said that Stage 5 graders will be launched in due course and will meet the EU and US emissions regulations.

ASE Construction Equipment’s D-Series motor graders, the 836D and 856D, boast many of the operator comfort and productivity benefits associated with the previous C-Series machines but the D-Series has now been upgraded with improved operator controls and systems.

Volvo Group’s leading position for future fuels Volvo CE’s president, Melker Jernberg, is keen to highlight the firm’s innovative electric construction machines

T

he Volvo Group is leading the field in delivering zero emission solutions for the future. The three divisions, Volvo Construction Equipment, Volvo Trucks and Volvo Penta, have all been investing heavily in developing new technologies.

Battery electric solutions are amongst the key developments from the firm, with a range of systems and products now available across the group. However, takeup for these innovative electric solutions is not as quick as the Volvo Group would like. Melker Jernberg is president of Volvo Construction Equipment, and commented, “The transformation is underway slower than needed.”

He continued, “Our industry can do better and demand in the industry can do better.” And he asked, “Why don’t we demand sustainable solutions in procurement processes?”

Projects such as the UK’s Lower Thames Crossing will provide a massive opportunity for Volvo CE to supply electric earthmoving equipment as the contracts from client National Highways have stipulated that no diesel machines will be allowed onsite.

It remains to be seen how many other major construction infrastructure projects in Europe or elsewhere will have similar requirements.

Charging infrastructure will take time to be ready to meet the demand from consumers and Jernberg concedes that it will also take time for the market for electric

construction machines to develop, “My best guess is the end of the decade maybe?”

But the Volvo Group is not being deterred. Anna Müller is president of Volvo Penta and said, “We have integrated electric solutions into different machines.” Apart from the battery electric equipment from sister company Volvo CE, the machines include an asphalt paver, a mobile crusher and a drilling rig made by different manufacturers.

She said that the firm is offering a range of modular site power solutions that can be used for recharging equipment or running site power.

And Roger Alm, president of Volvo trucks, commented, “Battery electric will be the main path for Volvo Trucks for net zero.

It is very clear we are the leader in electric trucks. Volvo is market leader in Europe for electric trucks, with electric trucks also in North America.”

Highly important additions to Volvo CE’s product line are the new battery electric A30 and A40 dumptruck models, which will start being made available to certain markets initially from 2026 and then more widely from 2027. Not only are these zero emission machines, Jernberg commented that the electric construction equipment is also far quieter in operation.

The electric ADTs retain the conventional driveline with driveshafts to the axles, which will help in production as these battery electric machines will be built on the same production line as the diesel models. And

while the firm did evaluate electric wheel motor drives in its working concept fuel cell ADT, Jernberg explained, “The robust conventional transmission is proven, so why change it? What is important is whether the machine is CO2 neutral.”

Similarly, while the company has been researching electric actuation, Jernberg said that this will not replace hydraulic systems any time soon. Dependability is a key issue, given the years of development that have gone into refining hydraulic systems to make them reliable and efficient. He added, “I hope it will come but hydraulic systems are fantastic.”

Jernberg added that the firm has a multi technology approach and whilst it is trying to lead in battery tech it understands that not all countries, regions and customers are going at the same speed.

As such, Volvo CE has also invested heavily in making conventional technology more sustainable in terms of fuel efficiency and productivity.

This is evidenced as the company has undertaken the biggest launch year ever of both conventional and battery electric product ranges, with 30% of the total range being renewed.

Volvo CE is also researching other future power options, such as with its fuel cell-powered ADT. Jernberg said, “We are also using hydrogen on internal combustion engines and we also have made a heavy investment in fuel cells.” www.volvoce.com

Novel paver screed design from Sumitomo Sumitomo president & CEO, Isamu Mitsuhashi, says that the firm is looking to develop its asphalt paver sales worldwide

S

umitomo is aiming to boost its share of the global market for asphalt pavers. The company is market leader in Japan and plans to develop sales around the globe, according to president & CEO, Isamu Mitsuhashi and regional manager road machinery, Weichao Shi. The company has undergone an organisational change to expand its presence in the global paver business. At the moment the firm is only exporting its HA60 model to Europe but believes this model offers performance benefits over competing machines.

The key to a paver’s performance is its screed and in this respect, the firm says its design offers high versatility. Compared with the conventional 2.55-5m or 3-6m

screed, the Sumitomo design offers paving widths of 2.3-6m or 2.8-7.5m, without the need for bolt-on extensions. This can save time, labour, and the need for equipment such as forklifts or cranes to manually bolton the extensions onsite.

Screed performance is also said to be good by the firm as the strike-off, tamper and vibration (STV) compaction system on the Sumitomo unit is highly effective. The strike-off unit guides the material smoothly to the tamper and vibration plate, providing pre-compaction. It also gives the tamper a longer wear life. The transport width of the 2.3-6m screed-equipped HA60 is 2.49m.

A user can close the screed, load on the trailer and go, without having to remove the side-plate on a 2.55m minimum screed and without extra application for the transport width clearance in most countries.

The Sumitomo machines are also versatile enough to able to work with a range of asphalt types, with warm mix now being used in the market. Mitsuhashi said that in the late 1990s, several private companies in the road pavement sector developed medium-temperature technologies that use additives to reduce the production temperature while maintaining the quality of the asphalt mixture.

The Japan Road Construction Association (JRA) compiled these technologies and published the “Guide to Medium-Temperature (Low Carbon) Asphalt Pavement” in March 2012. In Japan warm mix asphalts are used typically for duties such as repair work requiring early traffic reopening, or for paving work in mountainous areas involving long-distance transportation, thin-layer paving or winter paving. www.sumitomokenki.com

AMMANN’S ELECTRIC PAVING INNOVATION A mmann is offering a new range of pavers, with its all-electric eABG4820 model taking centre stage. Also new is the ABG5420 paver, which benefits from a series of performance upgrades while retaining the firm’s highly effective screed design.

The electric paver has many similarities with its diesel sister, the ABG 4820, a 2.5m-wide paver that can accommodate a screed length of up to 6.5m. It looks the same, has the same screed, the same user interface – Electric Pavement Management 3 (EPM3) - and the same street-level control panels at either side. However, it weighs in at around one tonne heavier. Internally, there are huge differences: “We took out the diesel engine and whole drive system and added two electric motors to give good and efficient power balancing,” explains Hans-Juergen Vogel, product manager at Ammann. “Also, we have made tweaks to the hydraulic system so that it will work well with the two motors.

The machine software, everything that relates to the control of the machine, is also new.”

ADVANCED ASPHALT PRODUCTION FROM MARINI T he new Marini Evodryer Plus plant is said to offer customers a sophisticated plant capable of handling high percentages of up to 70% RAP in the feed, while featuring just one drum. This slots into the range between the more complex and costly parallel drum plants able to handle up to 80% RAP in the feed, and the simpler existing units with just one drum that can handle

up to 60% RAP in the feed. The key to the plant is the way the hot gas generator is integrated into the single drum. “It’s a completely different concept,” said a company spokesperson.

The firm moved the dryer from the ground to the top of the plant as this eliminates the risk of the potentially sticky RAP material causing problems in an elevator. The design also reduces thermal dispersion.

Meanwhile, the drum has been extended by 3m and two small burners have been added, firing the hot gas generator.

This patented design heats the materials in the drum efficiently but without the risk of overheating. The discharge system features insulated hoppers to prevent sticking when there is a high percentage of RAP in the mix.The firm says that this advanced asphalt

production system allows up to 70% RAP usage but without compromising on product quality.

The plant suits medium-large production volumes with high RAP content, but with just one drum the plant is less costly to buy, has lower fuel costs and is simpler to maintain than sophisticated parallel drum plants. www.marini.fayat.com

Stability and versatility with Power Curbers Power Curbers is now offering the latest fourtrack version of its successful 5700 slipformer, the 5704-D MAX, to the European market. This variant offers high stability and extra versatility, suiting the needs of European customers. The machine is available with a 3.7m auger, 6m belt and 8.5m belt. The conveyor options can be switched quickly from left to right due to a special dual-swinging mount. Transport is eased for the 8.5m conveyor option because it can be folded when required, with the optional aluminium canopy also folding quickly for transport.

MASSENZA REDESIGNS ITS PMB PLANTS M assenza has redesigned all three models in its PMB plant range. Its engineers have changed the design of the mixing tanks to reduce the likelihood of material clogging, reconfigured the medium-sized machine to allow a fast expansion of production volumes, and added control rooms to the two larger models.

The three models in the Massenza PMB plant range are: the Smart which can produce between five and 10tonnes of polymer modified bitumen (PMB) an hour; the Klever which can produce between 10 and 20tonnes and the SuperKlever which can produce between 25 and 30tonnes.

For the Klever and SuperKlever PMB plants, Massenza has added control rooms containing the PLC and screen. Providing cool air in the summer and warm air in the winter, this update aims to make life more comfortable for the plant operators.

The firm claims that compared to diesel-powered machines, the new generation electric paver is more energyefficient. Fayat: striking a balance Jean-Claude Fayat says that the FAYAT Group strikes a balance between contracting and manufacturing

J

ean-Claude Fayat is president of the FAYAT Group and says that the firm occupies an unusual position in the construction sector, as both contractor and manufacturer. He explained that this gives the firm a different perspective to its competitors in both segments, “We have a unique balance between contracting and industry.”

Rather than being a general contractor or manufacturer, the FAYAT group occupies specialist segments and he said, “We try to be the best in niche markets.”

Being a family-owned firm, the FAYAT group is also able to respond more quickly to changes in market demand than companies in public ownership. The FAYAT Group is a specialist in road equipment and building roads but also has a significant presence in the road machinery sector.

And he said, “In total we have 25 factories around the world.”

The FAYAT Group is focussed on the European market, although it is also growing its presence in the North American market, following on from its purchase of ADM in 2024.

Looking to the future, the firm has been

investing in new technologies and the FAYAT Group is now offering a number of electric machines in its portfolio. But Fayat said that these advanced electric machines are still a niche product, with a low take-up, “For me it’s still slow. The sales are still low.”

The firm has developed electric machines because it has to be ready for the demand when it comes, but Fayat said that the high cost of the units still puts off many customers who still stick to conventional diesel equipment for the most part. This will change in time and he said, “When it comes down to 1.5x the cost of a diesel machine, electric models will sell strongly.”

Fayat said that the Group will benefit from the knowledge and experience gained in China from developing and using electric machines. Much of this wealth of experience is coming from China’s automotive sector, which has been encouraged to develop electric vehicles by the Chinese Government. China’s automotive sector has benefited from some subsidies for electric vehicle R&D projects while customers have also had subsidies to encourage them to buy EVs in the past. The mass manufacturing

of batteries and electric drives as well as the crossover of this technology into the construction machinery sector will help reduce costs and make electric construction machines more attractive to customers in the future.

Other future fuels also hold promise, particularly HVO or synthetic fuels. With regard to the use of hydrogen as a fuel in the construction industry, Fayat believes this is still some years away though. He said, “We are not ready from a logistics point of view.

Probably it will come and be part of the solution but it has to be green hydrogen.”

The company has been working on hydrogen burners for its asphalt plants but Fayat believes it will be some time before market demand picks up for this technology.

He said, “We have to be ready and we don’t know when it will be.”

However, he added that it is important for the firm to invest in hydrogen technology as it would cost far more if the company comes to the market too late.

Much closer will be increased demand in industry for warm asphalt, which is a technology Fayat thinks will be of major benefit for road construction. He said, “I believe in this. It’s economic because it saves money. It reduces emissions and we have the technology.”

Utilising warm asphalt effectively does involve improvements in logistics to ensure that materials reach sites on time, but Fayat thinks that the rewards will be substantial for those contractors adapting their processes and making the move. In 2022 25% of the asphalt used in France was warm asphalt but Fayat sees that this will increase rapidly and become the dominant material used for road construction in France by 2030, as well as in much of Europe. For France, IDRRIM’s Note 46 of February 2021 states that road construction players in France are committed to producing 80% of running asphalt mixes at less than 150°C by 2030.

Similarly, the use of RAP will continue to increase. He said, “15 years ago recycling was minimal. Storing RAP used to be costly so it wasn’t used. But now firms use RAP because it saves money.”

Looking ahead, Fayat is uncertain how the construction market will develop during the coming 12 months, with the political climate adding to market instability. He added, “You try to see what happened in the past. We have to be ready and we have to flexible.” www.fayat.com

With its enclosed aggregate storage concept, the Challenger can reduce the heating requirements during the asphalt production process significantly. And with reduced heating needed, this slashes fuel costs while also making major cuts in CO2 emissions by as much as 30%, allowing customers to meet the increasingly tough environmental regulations governing asphalt plants in Europe.

Clean technology from Wirtgen Dr Volker Knickel, CEO of the Wirtgen Group, explained how the firm is planning for a sustainable construction future

r Volker Knickel, CEO of the Wirtgen Group said that the firm is working to deliver sustainable and efficient road construction technologies.

Warm asphalt plays a key role in sustainable road construction and will grow in use in the next few years. Dr Knickel commented that sustainability will be of increasing importance for contractors, while in Germany there are also stricter regulations on reducing the exposure site personnel to VOCs. Using warm asphalt does brings its own complexities though and Dr Knickel said, “It’s a challenge for our customers as it’s cooler and you have to be faster. You have to be more precise with everything you do, with how long you take to lay the asphalt and compact it.”

An efficient process is the key and he added, “You need to be more ready and there’s less room for mistakes. You have to have a consistent process as there is less time.”

Dr Knickel said that the Wirtgen Group has been working on systems that will help customers to utilise warm asphalt reliably.

Using additives or foaming can help to get the necessary viscosity. Meanwhile, employing a material transfer vehicle makes the paving process more controlled and consistent, with a heated conveyor belt to prevent both heat and aggregate segregation.

When it comes to delivering the speedy and efficient compaction needed for

warm asphalt, Wirtgen also has solutions and Dr Knickel said, “We think the best solution for compacting warm mix asphalt is oscillation.” In addition, he said that the firm’s new asphalt compaction realtime density measurement technology Smart Compact Pro will play a key role in delivering effective compaction.

The firm’s John Deere Operations Center as the digital platform for the roadbuilding ECO-system will also be important for customers, providing key data for operations according to Dr Knickel. He said, “How we weave the digital thread into the customers’ production systems is important.”

Performance tracking solutions help deliver the digital transformation for customers. He continued, “You have a full understanding of what you have and you can learn from it.”

Parent company John Deere has its own division to develop technologies and Dr Knickel said that this has been transformational for the Wirtgen Group, “We don’t have to worry about the fundamentals but can go straight into applications.”

Dr Knickel explained, ”We don’t just sell you a machine, we sell you a solution for an entire production system. You make sure that the data is there to get everything right.”

He explained that the wisest way to reduce the CO2 emissions the most is to use alternative fuels from renewable sources ranging from wood dust to liquefied biomass (BtL) or hydrogen to fuel the asphalt plant and to increase input rates of recycled material, rather than mobile machines. Fuel burned by road machines in a typical road construction job will account for just 4-8% of the fuel used in total for the project. By comparison, the fuel used in producing the materials equates to around 70% of the fuel (when using H2 + 90% RAP) consumed to deliver a construction project.

Dr Knickel added, “To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we think asphalt plants are the best place to put the money.”

By comparison, the infrastructure supply chain for hydrogen to mobile machines will be a more difficult challenge. Some companies are looking at having electrolysis facilities to produce hydrogen close to asphalt production sites. However, the supply of sufficient quantities of green hydrogen for industrial purposes remains a challenge. Hydrogen holds a huge potential as a future fuel and Dr Knickel said, “If you get the infrastructure in place, the technology will be ready.” www.wirtgen-group.com

he Ammann Group is investing heavily in new technologies that will help reduce the environmental impact of construction and to achieve net zero. Hans-Christian Schneider is CEO of the Ammann Group and says that focussing on making asphalt production a greener process is a key driver in reducing climate change emissions.

He said, “The asphalt mixing process, with the temperatures you need to reach, is relatively energy intensive.”

Schneider explained that as a result, using a green energy source to fuel asphalt mixing is a logical step, “This is why we’ve invested so much.”

The use of hydrogen to fuel asphalt plants is seen as a way ahead for the construction sector. Schneider said, “The technology on the plant has been developed and is working. The much bigger question is the availability of hydrogen in the quantities needed and green hydrogen is vital. That is a very big question.”

Distribution of green hydrogen presents further challenges. He said that in Germany for example there are plans for large hydrogen production facilities but added, “If you look realistically, it is some time away.”

Schneider questioned whether further government regulations would help drive the move towards the use of hydrogen as a fuel.

In the meantime, the new Ammann H2 burner addresses these supply chain concerns. It leverages multi-fuel technology, allowing plant owners to select hydrogen, natural gas or other gaseous, liquid and dust fuels. Switching between fuel types is easy, too.

The Ammann Group is continuing to invest in an array of green technologies and Schneider said, “In R&D we try to explore other options.”

Further electrification is another avenue the construction industry can take to deliver sustainability although Schneider recognises that this will come at a cost to customers, with sales of electric machines remaining low at present. He said, “The break-even points are not as attractive as expected.”

However, he did comment that the total cost of ownership on electric machines is something customers should focus on.

Customers typically keep machines in their fleets for 8-10 years. Analysing the running costs of an electric machine in comparison with a diesel unit over time reveals a benefit for the total cost of ownership with an electric unit. Schneider commented, “We’ve done the research and after 3 ½ years or so, the electric ones become cheaper. We did this on the small electric roller which we’ve had in the range for 1 ½ years now.”

Schneider said that the lower cost of electricity for recharging versus fuel costs is a key factor. He also said that with an electric machine, maintenance is considerably cheaper as there is no need to change filters or engine oil.

However, Schneider acknowledged that in Europe for example there is a dependency on energy and that energy is expensive. He also recognises that there are issues with the electricity grid in much of the developed west, with under-investment over many years that will hamper the more widespread use of electric machines. www.ammann.com

The dual-shaft, slow-speed shredder means that the Centauro range is ideally suited to recycling asphalt planings, explained D’Addato: “With a slow speed, you do not crush the stone which means that the bitumen doesn’t get pulverised and lost as dust, so you don’t need as much fresh bitumen when you are making a new mix,” he said.

Avoiding cracks in the aggregates also reduces the energy needed at the asphalt plant when making the new mix, said D’Addato.

Water can seep into aggregates containing small cracks, which means that more energy will be needed to dry out the recycled asphalt and get it up to the right mix temperature.

The Centauro 75.25 has a FPT F36 105 kW diesel engine and a MecceAlte 165 kVA alternator. Once in location, the shredding and screening equipment can be powered by the engine or attached to a local electricity supply if lower emissions are a priority.

SANDVIK’S NEW ELECTRIC TRACKED CONE CRUSHER S andvik Mobile Crushing and Screening has launched the QH443E tracked cone crusher. The new electric unit has been designed with a focus on sustainability and productivity in heavy-duty applications.

Electric crushing and screening with Keestrack Keestrack says that its latest R2 impact crusher is available in both full electric ZERO, and conventional diesel/hydraulic drive variants. ase has developed a concept wheeled loader to showcase new and developing technologies.

The “Impact” is fully electric and features Case’s semi-autonomous “click & dig” system, but the most notable thing about the machine is its silhouette - it has no cab. It has been designed for remote operation.

“We can imagine in the future that we can drive the machine fully automatically

from a kind of site control lounge,” explained Fabrizio Cepollina, head of construction for EMEA Case. “It could be interesting for dangerous areas such as demolition.”

Case is working in partnership with several companies to develop a raft of digital tools, some of which are already being deployed in its latest machines: satellite positioning with sister company Hemisphere; autonomous and semi-

Versatility is the key Bobcat product managers Robert Husar and Katinka Kincses explained some of the market developments for the firm

B

obcat is a leading company in the compact machine segment, having pioneered the skid steer loader, and versatility is the key to its equipment offering. Product managers Katinka Kincses and Robert Husar explained some of the firm’s key drivers in terms of developments to Bobcat’s extensive equipment and attachment ranges.

Husar said that although the whole construction sector was hit hard by COVID-19, the firm continued to develop its range and he said, “We kept investing in technology.”

Like its rivals Bobcat has recognised the need to invest in low-carbon technologies and the firm has developed electric machines for its range. Husar said that the firm has been working on electric drives for its telehandler models. These would also replace the hydrostatic drives with electric motors, increasing overall efficiency.

Overall Bobcat is developing various technologies, depending on the product type and customer usage.

He continued, “In terms of market acceptance, we know the electric machines do provide some value to customers.”

However, sales of fully electric machines remain low at present, and he said, “If you look at the sales, it’s been a challenge to justify the investments.” Bobcat has recognised though that there will be an uptick in the market for battery electric machines at some point and he added, “You have to be ready for it.”

He explained that electric equipment does have benefits in terms of safety as well as reduced working noise. However, he continued that customers do have

reservations with the residual value of electric machines and due to one factor in particular, “We’re seeing a lot of changes in battery technology.”

Fuel usage of compact equipment such as mini excavators does not figure largely in the trend towards electric models for this segment, with regulations or subsidies having more of an effect on customer decisions. Husar commented that across Europe, there are now around 300 low emission zones, most of which are in cities.

But he added that there are no unified regulations on low emissions requirements, meaning that supplying equipment to meet local demand can be a challenge.

Bobcat has been investigating the potential for hydrogen as a fuel but both Husar and Kincses see this as a much longer term option. In the shorter term, alternatives such as HVO or synthetic fuels hold more potential and Husar said “HVO is popular in the Nordic countries.”

The company is also investigating the potential for hybrids or fuel cell systems for excavators weighing in the 8-10tonne range, although the latter remains some way off as a cost-effective power solution.

Kincses said that a key focus for Bobcat has been ensuring that its machines are truly versatile and can work efficiently with the wide array of attachments in the range. She said, “We offer over 100 attachments.”

Kincses said that the firm has a strategy to ensure that its attachments are fully interchangeable. This means that a unit that is used most often on a compact tracked loader for example will also fit onto a telehandler or a compact wheeled loader if required.

According to Kincses, the key to this is the attachment control device. The attachment control device ensures the flow range is correct, while also enabling some other benefits such as with a planer unit for example, where the drum drive has priority over the other functions (side shift or side ski adjustment) thanks to the attachment recognition. Kincses said that Bobcat recognises that some customers may use attachments from other suppliers, however without the attachment control system they will not get the best possible performance out of their attachments.

She said that Bobcat machines have been designed to be tool carriers, with numerous smart features, such as being able to adjust power to the track drives when a carrier is operating close to a kerb and preventing the loader from slewing for example.

The roadworks attachment segment is of growing importance for Bobcat and she added, “Compact tracked loaders are becoming larger and more powerful.” And she explained that when fitted with planer attachments, “…are replacing small milling machines.”

She added that Bobcat has seen a growing demand for compact tracked loaders in Europe. In the US, around 80% of the market would be for compact tracked loaders, with around 20% for skid steer loaders. However, she said that in Europe this would represent around 80% of the market for skid steer loaders and just 20% for tracked loaders in the past, adding that customers in Europe are slowly changing behaviour, resulting in a CTL industry growth of 38% last year. www.bobcat.com

Attachments from Komatsu Utility equipment & attachments

Komatsu Europe is launching a static pulveriser, rotating pulveriser and demolition crusher - the latest additions to the Komatsu’s attachments range.

Short cycle times are achieved by using large hydraulic components for maximised oil flow and a custom-made speed valve. On the mechanical side, the main areas of focus are strength and wear resistance. Exceptional performance is achieved by using Strenx 960 for the main structure, Hardox for protection plates and the use of alu-bronze bushings on the main hinge.

Earlier, Komatsu introduced its sorting and demolition grapples, which have already proven to be valuable assets for the industry. With this latest launch, Komatsu continues to strengthen its offering, and more advanced attachments will be introduced over the coming year.

NEW EXCAVATORS AND DUMPERS FROM WACKER NEUSON

acker Neuson has added new excavators and dumpers to its product line.

The DW10 dumper has a payload of 1tonne and the DW15 dumper has a payload of 1.5tonnes and both are said to offer good performance on tough terrain coupled with versatility.

innovative skip exchange system. The quick and easy replacement of the skip expands the range of applications and the utilisation of the machine.

For its zero-emission product portfolio, Wacker Neuson is offering two new electric excavators: the EZ10e with a one tonne payload; and the EZ26e with a 2.6tonne payload.

Both mini-excavators are zerotail models designed without rear overhang, making them suited for confined construction sites or indoors.

Wacker Neuson excavators have a wide range of attachments available.

One example is the EW100 wheeled excavator, which is factory-fitted with the MiC 4.0 interface. The EW100 comes equipped with factoryinstalled automatic attachment recognition for MiC 4.0-compatible attachments. This system also automatically adjusts essential settings such as hydraulic pressure and flow rate. The operator can select other attachments individually on the display. SIMEX UPGRADES ART 1000

S

imex has launched the next generation of its ART 1000 attachment for in-situ cold recycling of asphalt roads. ART 1000 – GEN II benefits from upgrades to its onboard electronics to provide more information to the operator, the addition of a Wi-Fi transmitter for remote monitoring, and some small design changes to make maintenance easier.

First launched in 2022, Simex developed the ART 1000 to rejuvenate deteriorated roads, without the need for additional material or heating. As well as milling and crushing the road surface, the system adds a rejuvenator to the milled material to restore some of the properties of the aged bitumen in the asphalt – and returns it to the road for compacting.

“With a small investment, the ART allows the life of a road to be extended without having to bring in new material for resurfacing, or the need to take any material away,” says Federico Tamburri, key account manager at Simex.

With secondary and country roads in

many European countries in poor repair, Simex is in discussions with a major excavator manufacturer who sees its potential.

The ART 1000 works by first milling material from the road, up to a depth of 100mm. It is mixed in the milling drum with a calculated amount of rejuvenator.

In a second drum the material is crushed to the correct size before being returned to the road. A final phase sees the attachment run over the material on the road to give it a final mixing before it can be compacted with a roller.

The latest generation includes a new video interface which displays real-time information such as linear metres completed, additive dosage and total additive consumption – which is also compiled into an end-of-day report. Simex software

adjusts the dosage of the additive according to the speed of advancement, with a series of LED lights which indicate when the ideal speed of travel has been reached.

Simex has also made changes to the 100-litre additive tank so that it is easily removable and allows access to the crusher drum for cleaning. The grille in the crusher drum that determines particle size is also now easily removable for cleaning.

To work in tandem with the ART 1000, Simex has also created the ST-ART 200 mini dozer, to spread the rejuvenated material. “We found that with the ART, several people were required to shovel the rejuvenated material into the right channel before it is compacted,” explained Tamburri.

Indeco’s new IDC 70 jaw attachment Indeco has launched a heavyweight jaw attachment, the IDC 70.

Designed for demolition of reinforced concrete structures, the jaw can be fitted on excavators of 70tonnes and above. Indeco spent six months developing the jaw, working to optimise its weight-topower ratio and adding features designed to reduce maintenance and increase productivity. Weighing in at 7200kg, 3.35m long and 0.65m wide, the IDC 70 has a maximum jaw opening of 1.8m, which the Italian manufacturer says beats rival products in the same class.

The jaw, which rotates hydraulically through 360o, has a swivel mechanism that is completely sealed to protect it from dust. To increase productivity, the design of the IDC 70 includes a regeneration valve which opens the jaw within 3-4 seconds and closes it in 5-7 seconds under no-load conditions, says Indeco.

The IDC 70 also benefits from Indeco’s fast-change teeth system, Indecobite. With a patent pending, the Indecobite system has been designed to make maintenance easier and to minimise downtime.

Indeco now plans to add further models. “This is the first of a new line,” said Indeco global sales and marketing manager Michele Vitulano. “We are planning to introduce another three sizes … we will grow this family of products.”

The first IDC 70 is due to start work on a project in Australia for the City Circle Group.

FAE GROUP’S MODIFIED REMOTE-CONTROLLED UNITS

AE Group has updated its remote-controlled unit (RCU) range so that the machines can accept attachments from any manufacturer. The plates to which the attachments are fitted now have standard skid-steer brackets.

“This means that we can now use every kind of attachment on the market, making it more versatile,” said FAE Group sales director Davide Barratta.

The RCUs can operate safely on slopes of up to 45o and were originally designed to carry a mulching attachment for land clearance. But they can also be deployed with a road planer attachment, said Barratta, to improve productivity and safety.

“The machine can be controlled from the front rather than from the cabin which could give better control of the machine,” he said.

“And, with a road planer, there is often a second worker in front of the machine, checking that it is moving in a straight line. That wouldn’t be

needed with the RCU.” The first of the three multipurpose, remote-controlled tracked carriers, the 41kW RCU 55 was launched in 2022,

with the RCU 75 and RCU 120 released subsequently.

The RCUs are already selling well for mulching applications, says Barratta, but

HYUNDAI CEE LAUNCHES ITS FIRST BATTERY ELECTRIC MINI EXCAVATOR

H

yundai Construction Equipment Europe is launching the HX19e, its first battery electric mini excavator. The new model weighs in at 2,296kg when equipped with a full cab and large capacity battery pack. Hyundai CEE says the compact machine will provide the ideal digging solution for urban utilities, landscaping and gardening, tunnel and basement excavation and for many local authority tasks, such as cemeteries and sports facilities. The HX19e will be offered with a choice of two lithium-ion battery packs, delivering 32kWh and 40kWh capacity, which is claimed to be almost double the capacity of some

competitor machines.

The 40kWh battery will allow customers to work for up to 6.7 hours between charges, with a break time top-up delivering full shift useability.

The machine is equipped with a widely used Type 2 connector, allowing customers to use existing EV charging infrastructure.

The intelligent onboard charging unit can be used with 110V or 230V supply, offering a full recharge time of 4.8 hours for the smaller 32kWh battery and six hours for the 40kWh. The HX19e is also equipped with a REMA DIN 320 connector, that permits rapid charging when 380V and 44V

supply is available. In this case a full recharge can take as little as 2 hours for the smaller battery and 2.5 hours for the larger model.

The batteries power a 13kW electric motor that in turn drives an open centre hydraulic system. This delivers similar performance to Hyundai’s diesel-powered HX19A mini excavator, which is powered by a 12.1kW engine.

The machine boasts the same 16kN bucket breakout force along with a slightly higher 9.4kN dipper arm breakout force. Maximum digging depth is 2,340mm and maximum digging reach is 3,940mm. www.hyundai-ce.eu/

Electric wheeled excavator innovation from Develon Develon unveiled its prototype BEV Zero-Emission 14tonne wheeled excavator, which is still in development. The machine is aimed at use in urban work and the firm plans to develop a line-up of various BEV products.

The DX140WRE is intended to be the world’s first massproduced medium-sized wheeled excavator that can work for more than 8 hours on a single charge. This will allow it to be a replacement for conventional internal combustion engine machines. It has been designed to be able to perform a full day’s work on a single charge, without the need for additional charging. The battery capacity has been selected and installed on the machine to meet this purpose.

SUNWARD FOCUSES ON ELECTRIC DRIVE

unward’s focus on electric machinery and solutions tailored for Europe was highlighted by its new compact yet powerful SWE 10FE mini excavator.

The SWE 10FED is a 1tonne unit with an EU Stage V motor that does more than simply align with the European Union’s transportation regulations. It is truly compact at 750mm wide. HYUNDAI’S GROUND-BREAKING HYDROGEN EXCAVATOR

H

yundai Construction Equipment says that its innovative HW155H hydrogen fuel-cellpowered, wheeled excavator is showing the industry how hydrogen could contribute to future carbon-free operation on construction sites. Digging and driving performance is said to match that of conventional diesel-driven machines.

The firm is leading the field with its radical zero-emission solution and according to a company spokesperson, “This machine is not a prototype any

more. It is production-ready.

But the market is not ready for it yet.”

The fuel-cell machine has been tested extensively in working applications and offers a 12-hour operating time with its onboard fuel storage.

However, operating times of up to 17 hours have also been achieved in some duties. The spokesperson continued, “We at Hyundai believe hydrogen will form a part in our future power needs.” And the firm is also ready with internal combustion engines that can

run on hydrogen. Hyundai says that its revolutionary, high-density storage system plays a key role because this can double the capacity of a conventional hydrogen tank, using a lower filling pressure, optimising space within the machine, reducing fill times and improving site safety.

The firm’s novel fueldelivery truck has also been developed to deliver efficient and fast refuelling, which takes 10-20 minutes.

The project to develop a fuel cell for the HW155H has

been a cooperation between Hyundai Construction Equipment and Hyundai Motor Company, which has a range of powertrain solutions for the automotive segment. Two cells have been designed, delivering 30kW and 50kW, with the HW155H using a combination of fuel cells to provide 70100kW. These fuel cells could be used in a range of machines, with the 15tonne wheeled excavator having been selected

Versatile wheeled excavators from Hitachi Versatility is a key feature of Hitachi’s latest ZXW7 wheeled excavator models. The short-tail swing ZX135W-7, ZX175W-7 and ZX220W-7 are said to be able to handle a wide variety of applications.

Attachments can be transported with the optional trailer package, and can be changed easily using the attachment support system. All three models can be equipped with two-piece booms to further boost versatility.

The innovative HIOS hydraulic system increases front speed and achieves high levels of productivity, while low fuel consumption helps to reduce running costs. The all-new ECO gauge also helps to control fuel efficiency. The smallest model, the ZX135W-7, has the same engine as the larger ZX155W-7 and a compact 360° swing radius for use in confined spaces. The ZX175W-7 also has a high digging force and lifting capacity, boosting productivity.

The wheeled excavators benefit from low noise levels and less vibration in the cab than the previous models. The view of the working area is maximised by large windows and the firm’s novel Aerial Angle camera system.

ecalac has reinforced its position in sustainable construction with the launch of a new electric excavator model.

The new eMWR wheeled excavator is joined by another new electric model, the eS900tele telescopic loader.

These latest models mean than Mecalac now has two excavators, two swing loaders, and a site dumper in its emissions-free electric portfolio.

The compact machines can handle all critical urban earthmoving tasks - digging, loading, and hauling - on a practical scale. Mecalac was bought by fellow French company Fayat in March, in a transaction which is expected to complete in the first half of 2025.

TLAS claims that its latest wheeled excavator has been redesigned and now benefits from increased power, boosting performance. The 135Wsr has a tail swing radius of only 1,620mm, a swing torque of 40kNm, and a slew speed of 9rpm. The 135Wsr weighs from 13.9-15.2tons and its Deutz diesel meets the Stage V emissions requirements and delivers 95kW at 2000rpm, providing a traction of 82kN, a top speed of 35km/h and good off-road mobility. In addition, it is highly fuel-efficient.

The 135Wsr features an integrated

engine oil level sensor while refueling is now done from the ground without the need to access the excavator, which can now also be operated using synthetic fuels. A central lubrication point supplies lubrication for the upper carriage and arm equipment; as an option, a fully automated version of the central lubrication is available. Another option: the 135Wsr can be fitted with the first split dozer blade made by ATLAS. As the two halves of the blade can be moved independently, it adapts to uneven surfaces. MB has developed a series of five demolition pulverisers, designed to fit excavators from 1.5tonnes up to 25tonnes. This is the first primary demolition attachment to be launched by the Italian manufacturer.

“It is something our customers were asking for,” says Giulia Riboni, communications specialist at MB. “We have crusher buckets and sorting grapplers, but for primary demolition, pulverisers are needed. It’s not a new concept but it is something that was missing from our range.”

The MB pulveriser range includes two models for lighter work, the MB-P160 and the MB-P380, and three heavy-duty models, the MB-PT650, the MB-PT1150 and the MB-PT1650.

The pulverisers can be fitted with three different types of teeth: a crusher kit; a pulveriser kit; or a shear kit.

The pulverisers are made of Hardox 550 which is high-hardness, abrasion-resistant steel plate designed for heavy-duty operations. The blades and teeth of the jaw can be reversed and interchanged to give longer life and less downtime.

s part of Manitou’s commitment to decarbonisation, the global French company is presenting a “concept” in hydrogen-powered rotating telehandlers. The MRT 2260 H2 prototype is a hydrogenpowered electric machine The special feature of this model is that it is powered by hydrogen through a fuel cell which guarantees zero-emission operation.

The unit, based on an electric configuration, offers a lifting height of 22m and a load capacity of 6tonnes. Basically, the fuel cell recharges the battery which greatly extends the working day of the machine.

Its design makes it easily removable because it replaces the diesel range-extender found on hybrid MRTs, explained Kevin Arnou, construction market director for product development.

The unit’s modular design is the secret for flexible use. The hydrogen cell can be engaged permanently to a smaller battery whereby the battery is simply the medium for hydrogen energy to run the machine.

Otherwise, the unit can have a larger battery and the fuel cell can be engaged at times to recharge the battery which is then used to run the machine.

Several prototypes are now being tested by customers. The real issue here, said Arnou, is not the technology. Rather, it’s the value chain of hydrogen

NEW CONTROL PANEL FOR CARMIX’S MOBILE CONCRETE MIXERS C armix, which manufactures selfloading mobile concrete mixers, has developed a new control panel which it is now supplying with its top-ofthe-range Carmix 3500 TC model. As well as aiding the operator, the control panel can be connected to a smartphone and to any location around the world via the cloud to provide information on the operation of the machine and its geo-location.

“The mix design information is stored in the computer, and can be updated from anywhere in the world,” said Carmix managing director Max Galante. Carmix’s system for weighing the components of a concrete mix differs from all its competitors.

Rather than using a shovel to weigh the different materials, Carmix’s mixers have four electronic load cells in the drum

which the manufacturer says gives far more accurate measurements.

Connectivity to the cloud also allows engineers at Carmix, or one of its dealers, to remotely diagnose any problems with the machine. “The dealers can also check the machine and schedule maintenance activities and organise any spare parts needed,” said Galante. www.carmix.com

Soilmec premiers Blue Tech Plus pilers Structures

Soilmec has launched its new Blue Tech Plus line of pilers with the aim of strengthening and implementing its main objectives: greater efficiency and lower emissions.

PASCHAL GOES ULTRA-LIGHT P aschal is supplementing its NeoR range of lightweight, steel formwork panels with even lighter powder-coated aluminium panels.The new aluminium panel is 75cm x 150cm and weighs only 23kg. The permissible fresh- concrete pressure is 50kN/ m², whereby the evenness tolerances according to DIN 18202, Table 3, line 6 are observed.

The NeoR strap 75 is used to connect the steel and aluminium panels quickly and securely, guaranteeing full compatibility. Meanwhile, the NeoR Multi Clamp 0-10cm has the same properties, which also incorporate plastic filler pieces for residual dimension compensation to the nearest centimetre. Paschal says that the steel-aluminium connecting bolt provides a cost-effective connection between steel and aluminium panels. Hitachi’s latest demolition range Structures

A joint venture between Hitachi and Kiesel Technology builds special application machines for demolition. The machines are made in Germany by KTEG and these include the KTEG 390HR, which is based on a Hitachi ZX350, and equipped with an extendable undercarriage, additional counterweight and tiltable demolition cab.

The fixed mounted 23m high-reach boom allows an attachment weight of 3.5tonnes.

The versatile multi-carrier KMC400P can be equipped with various fronts including high-reach demolition, super long front, tele-dipper, earthmoving or crane application units. The Boom Quick Connect system allows a boom change within minutes out of the cab. A robust and durable design, it can handle a range of jobs on demolition environments.

The largest special application machine is the 180tonne KMC1200S, which suits large and challenging projects. It can handle a 3tonne attachment at 51m, 5tonnes at 44m or 15tonnes at 28m. A new main frame and slew ring provide heavy-duty design for durability and reliability.

CIFA ADDS TO RANGE

ifa has added to its Energya range of electric plant with the new E10 concrete mixer. Pairing it with the new Mercedes-Benz eArocs 400 electric truck, Cifa offers the possibility of zero-emissions concrete delivery.

Since the mixer and truck are powered independently from different batteries, the mixer could be combined with any type of truck, explains Cifa CEO Davide Cipolla: “It may be

more practical for the mixer to be mounted on a diesel or gas truck, which would still mean it could be zero emissions on the jobsite.”

While the pathway to wider electrification remains unclear, manufacturers need to provide lower emission solutions that are also viable for customers, says Cipolla, adding: “We need to find sustainable solutions that are sustainable for the market. It’s clear that the future in some way will be electric.

But on the jobsite there are constraints, maybe due to a lack of charging infrastructure or because the costs are too high.”

In a handful of countries where there are government mandates or incentives, such as Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands, contractors are already deploying equipment from Cifa’s Energya range.

For instance, the Energya K42E truck pump, which is powered by two electric motors, has been deployed on a city-

centre site in Amsterdam.

However, developing the Energya range is important for Cifa because it allows the company to develop its expertise in electric plant.

“Energya is a sort of laboratory that allows us to think into the future,” says Cipolla. “We understand that most markets are not ready now, but as a company, we need to think about it, we need to be ready for the future.”

Rehlko’s new KDI 1903TCR engine packs a punch Rehlko’s new KDI 1903TCR engine packs a big punch in a compact package, delivering 50kW of power and 250Nm of torque with three cylinders.

“Our mantra is power density and torque density,” says Massimiliano Bonanni, general manager – product strategy at Rehlko.

“We wanted to provide a three-cylinder engine capable of this level of power to meet the need of our customers to deliver more productivity within the same machine frame.”

The KDI range includes three-cylinder 1.9litre engines which deliver a power output of 42kW and 225Nm torque and four-cylinder 2.5litre engines which deliver 56kW and 315Nm torque. The KDI 1903TCR sits in-between the two. The new engine would be suited to a wide range of construction equipment such as small excavators, skid steers, telehandlers or pumps.

“The high power and torque densities mean that the machine can do more work within the same time window, and with more efficient fuel consumption,” says Bonanni.

The KDI 1903 TCR incorporates Rehlko’s diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology, engineered to meet EU Stage V emissions regulations. The DPF enables efficient automatic regeneration, even at low rpm, says Rehlko. The engine can also run on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) if required to reduce emissions and its carbon footprint in operation.

The engine manufacturer says it delivers dependable power through its core pillars: proven combustion engines; purpose-built electric drivelines; and integrated battery energy storage subsystems. Perkins 2606-E13TA engine claims market-leading power density The new 2606-E13TA engine from Perkins delivers a marketleading power density according to the firm. This 13litre unit delivers similar outputs to earlier generation 15litre and even 18litre single turbo engines. According to the company: “We have worked with the customers to find out what they need.”

The engine features a narrow design with the geartrain at the rear and the alternator mounted directly on the block.

Increased uptime, reduced downtime and easier servicing mean that the total cost of ownership has been reduced. Service intervals have increased to 1,000 hours.

Benefitting also from a variable geometry turbo, the engine can deliver from 340-515kW and is HVO ready, with the potential for alternative fuels such as methanol, ethanol and hydrogen.

Meanwhile, the improved 904 J-E36TA unit now offers a maximum power rating of 106kW, with a power density increase of 6% and a torque increase of 3%.

The firm is also working on its six-cylinder 1206 engine, being developed as a multi-fuel project trialling ethanol, methanol, biomethane and hydrogen.

According to a Perkins spokesperson: “It’s in the test cell right now and is one year into a three-year programme.”

Chinese firm Triangle Tyre is offering a new and improved product for the wheeled loader market. The latest 29.5R25 from the firm Is said to be both durable and long lasting, delivering effective traction in tough working conditions. The tyre features a 3-Star Rating TL559S+ L5 and is said to be designed for wheel loaders operating in both surface and underground applications.

This three-star rated tyre can cope with heavier loads than its two-star counterpart, offering greater impact resistance, wear performance and load capacity. Featuring deep, robust treads, the TL559S+ is ideal for severe applications.

The new tyre is being made available as the firm boosts its position in the European market. Triangle Tyre says it has been further developing its product range to meet the demands of both original equipment (OE) and replacement markets.

Hydrogen power from JCB JCB Powertrain has developed a working combustion engine fuelled by hydrogen with the firm’s team of 150 engineers working on the £100 million project for over three years.

The company has already produced more than 130 evaluation engines which are powering backhoe loaders, Loadall telescopic handlers and generator sets. The hydrogen engine will also be suitable for applications across many industry sectors.

The company is also offering a complete JCB Powertrain model. This complete driveline package, based around the company’s popular 448 Stage V engine, is available to original equipment manufacturers (OEM) as a single unit, or as individual components, to suit specific machine requirements.

JCB has secured rulings from 11 licensing authorities across Europe allowing the engines to be used commercially in machines. Realworld testing of JCB’s hydrogen equipment on customers’ sites is now at an advanced stage.

Rehlko: new brand and new leadership Rehlko’s new president of engines, Eric Fontaine

E

ric Fontaine joined Rehlko as president of engines in January 2025, not long after the business was rebranded from Kohler.

“I was impressed with the spirit of innovation and the products we have, together with the high quality of the engines,” says Fontaine of Rehlko.

“For our products, within the package we provide, we really are best in class, especially around torque and power density.” He also pays tribute to the talent and enthusiasm of the Rehlko engine team.

Global investment company Platinum Equity became the major shareholder of Kohler Energy in May 2024, with the Kohler Company remaining as a minority shareholder while retaining the Kohler name. The rebranding to Rehlko -which is an anagram of Kohler - was announced in September 2024.

Fontaine came to Rehlko from electricmotor and power-transmission-component manufacturer Regal Rexnord Corporation, where he was vice president of the Industrial Components Division.

With a background in the US navy, Fontaine says that he hopes to bring the leadership and discipline skills he gained in his early working life to Rehlko’s engine business.

One of the challenges facing Rehlko is its global footprint, with production sites in the US, Italy, Mexico, and China which all have different ways of working, says Fontaine.

He wants to put more rigorous processes in place and identify best practice so that it can become standard practice around all Rehlko’s engine operations.

“There is a lot of complexity in large organisations and issues around how they pass and process information,” he

says. “I want us to be more focused on operational excellence and customer service and be better aligned so that we can do a consistently better job and deliver value for customers.”

For customers that should mean faster responses to queries and questions and faster deliveries of engines, says Fontaine.

Innovation will still be a focus for Rehlko, although Fontaine hopes to bring more rigour to this too, referencing the Japanese continuous-improvement methodology, Kaizen.

“There are times when you can get out of sync if, at a high level, you don’t have clear objectives and focus,” says Fontaine. “When the twentieth really interesting thing comes along, we need to step back and focus on the top five.” www.rehlko.com

BONFIGLIOLI’S ELECTRIC DRIVES FOR PAVERS AND ROLLERS H aving developed its first electric drives more than 10 years ago for industrial applications, Bonfiglioli is now adapting the technology to manufacture electric drives for road construction equipment.

The manufacturer has developed a range of electric motors for mobile equipment, including pavers and rollers, which it calls the BPM series.

The permanent magnet

synchronous motors it deploys are the most efficient on the market, says Massimo Palomba, e-mobility sales and business development manager, mobility and wind industries for Bonfigloli.

They have an efficiency of up to 98%, compared to 40 to 60% for hydraulic motors.

“Electrification is not only about getting away from fossil fuel, it is about reaching for better efficiency,” says

Palomba. “Because an electric powertrain is more efficient than a hydraulic one, it consumes less resources.”

In a bid to fight off competition from lower cost suppliers from China and Japan, Bonfiglioli is looking to become a solutions supplier – rather than a component one. To that end it acquired electronics manufacturer Selcom so that it can now provide elements

such as PCB boards and power converters in-house.

“By making the right combination of components, we are raising a technological barrier against our competitors,” says Palomba. “If we only supply mechanical components, they can be changed. If we are supplying a whole system, it becomes more difficult to replace things.”

It uses KREISEL’s immersion cooling technology, which provides active thermal management for optimal performance, safety and improved lifespan.

KREISEL battery technology is actively being used in the field across a range of applications and industries, including, agriculture, road building, construction, onroad and marine.

In addition to the battery packs, John Deere is also developing a comprehensive charging ecosystem featuring KREISEL’s battery technology to provide versatile charging options with both stationary and mobile solutions for a variety of jobsites.
