Something is majorly wrong our mining industry, and the problem is escalating.

T

he budget has been and gone and what it laid out for mining surprised no one.

Exploration incentives, the cutting of red and green tape, not removing the Diesel Fuel Tax Rebate Scheme, all were proffered to the mining and resources industry.

And coupled with the current government promise to abolish the Mineral Resources Rent Tax, it was a win for the industry.

Apparent crisis averted.

However there is another crisis arising in the industry, and it has been building over the last six months.

Starting in December last year we saw a rash of fatalities.

The month saw four deaths in as many weeks.

A series of terrible accidents to round out the year,

Comment Cole Latimer ozmining@cirrusmedia.com.au but there was the hope that we could start 2014 afresh, look at the mistakes that led to these incidents, rectify them, and make the industry safer.

Apparently not.

Because the rate of fatal incidents has not slackened.

As we went to print there have been nine deaths (ten if we include a worker passing away in his sleep at Tropicana’s camp).

That is 14 deaths in less than six months.

And these incidents have been spread right across the country.

So the question must be asked – what is going wrong in the industry?

How, at the height of the boom in 2011/12 did we see fewer deaths than now, in what could be called a downturn or at the very least a slow-down.

If they were predominately in one state or site (and to be fair, three of them were at a single mine site in Tasmania), then we could easily identify the issue; identify what that particular operation is doing wrong, and solve it.

tiple, unrelated sites across Australia there is very little common ground to build a case upon.

Instead we are just left asking more questions – over whether it is an issue of industry culture; a symptom of the downturn; a number of lapses in safety; or a lack in training.

There needs to be a serious refocusing on safety on mine sites.

Whether it is drilling down on safety procedures, operations, or the day to day of mining.

Potential accidents and near misses should be a wake-up call to miners, not a joke.

We can’t let this rate of deaths continue.

There is a crisis in mining, and something needs to be done before it escalates.

ON the front cover of this edition of Australian Mining we’ve featured Australia’s new mine, Newcrest’s Cadia East operation.

This underground hard rock mine is not only the largest of its type in the country, but is also one of the largest underground hard rock mines in the world. Running to a depth of around 1.2 kilometres, the operation has an approved mine life of around 21 years, however it is believed that the mine could have an operational life of up to 50 if all the ore is accessed.

Union battles are making a comeback in Western Australia, The Dirt writes.

T

he war of words between the Australian Mining and Metals Association and the Maritime Union of Australia has been heating up considerably last month, with each side accusing the other of “misleading the public”.

At time of writing we have seen two industrial actions cancelled, for entirely different reasons.

First, the Teekay tugboat deckhand strike was cancelled by the MUA. After industrial action was approved by Fair Work Australia, the MUA decided to put off the action, seemingly as a sign of good faith, in order to continue negotiations with Teekay without risking further delays to reaching an agreement.

The situation seemed to be building to breaking point, with BHP wanting to petition the government to intervene, and Fortescue threatening to lay off workers if the strike wentAahead.

A strike is a lot of stress, heartache and risk for the union and its members. They don’t want to do it for fun.

The nature of the language used by the AMMA is belittling to the workers, and many people believe that the Teekay deckhands are greedy for wanting their wage to come in line with national standards, even though the union has now said they will accept 67 per cent of the Master’s wage, rather than the national 70 per cent.

But I want to point out that of these workers, who earn a bit less than $140,000 per year, most pay their rent bills in Karratha where a three bedroom house can cost more than $50,000 per year.

When it comes to judging who is full of it, I tend to look at who is more forthcoming with their information.

I know that when I want to talk to the MUA about their arguments, they are always available and friendly on the phone – they even put their mobile numbers on their website.

When I want to talk to the AMMA or one of the mining companys, they don’t return calls or emails, finding a mobile number is near impossible, and the gatekeepers would never let a common journalist interview anyone of importance on the phone.

Worker dies at Tropicana project A worker has been found dead at the Tropicana gold project.

The employee of mining contractor Macmahon Holdings was off shift at the time, and it is understood that he died in his sleep.

Macmahon CEO Ross Warren said the company was focussed on providing counselling support to the family and workers on site.

“We are very saddened by the news,” he said.

“Counselling services have been made available to all who have been affected by the incident.”

A worker has been killed at the Boggabri Coal Mine.

The worker was a construction rigger in his 40s, contracted to work on the Boggabri Coal Expansion Project. The man went into traumatic cardiac arrest and died at the scene.

Investigation into Brightstar gold mine death Mines safety investigators have arrived at the Brightstar gold mine to begin the investigation into the death of a machine operator.

The machine operator was a man from Boulder, aged 63 years.

The West Australian reported that the accident may have involved a forklift.

What the BUDGET means for mining An insight into what the Federal Budget has in store for the mining industry. Cole Latimer writes.

T

he latest budget has been released and there were a number of surprises for the mining industry.

Yet despite what many critics of the industry were expecting, the news was overall positive for resources.

But it isn’t all good news, overall spending on the mining, manufacturing and construction industry is forecast to decrease from $3.139 billion last year, to $2.74 billion next year, falling again to $2.58 billion in the following year.

It expects a major part of this decrease, approximately 14.6 per cent in real terms from 2013-14 to 201415 due to a decrease in expenses for the Research and Development tax Incentive and refundable tax offset from 45 per cent to 43.5 per cent from 1 July this year.

A major aspect of this new budget is the government’s promise to keep to its pledg e to remove the mining and carbon taxes.

Last year it was revealed the mining tax raised only $200 million, well below the $3 billion predicted, and effectively only 5 per cent of the original estimates.

ernment will continue to fight to repeal the MRRT from 1 July this year, with its budget papers stating that “the MRRT is a failed tax which raises almost no revenue, yet imposes an unnecessary regulatory and compliance burden on the Australian mining industry”.

One of the major budget benefits for the industry is the government’s promise of $100 million for greenfields exploration.

Dubbed the Exploration Development Incentive, it is designed to “encourage investment in small exploration companies undertaking greenfields mineral exploration in Australia”.

“Australian shareholders of these companies will receive a tax offset for the company’s greenfields exploration.”

This is a boon for the mining industry, which has seen massive declines in exploration spending across the board.

According to the Mineral and Petroleum Exploration, Australia, Dec 2013 report there was an alarming downturn in operating expenditure and metres drilled in mineral exploration.

Although the downward trend has continued steadily since 2011, the estimate for the December quarter saw total mineral exploration expenditure down 9.8 per cent, or www.miningaustralia.com.au

down $58 million to $536.3 million, with the largest contributor being Western Australia down 12 per cent.

Seasonally adjusted this equated to expenditure down 12.5 per cent, down 19.3 per cent in WA. Exploration on areas of new deposits fell 27.5 per cent or $66.5 million, and on existing deposits the expenditure fell 6.2 per cent or $24.5 million.

The largest monetary decrease for any mineral was for iron ore, down 17.1 per cent or $38 million, while nickel fell 49.2 per cent or $18.6 million.

In terms of metres drilled the trend estimate fell 2.7 per cent for the December quarter, with the current estimate 22.6 per cent lower than the same time in 2012.

Greenfield drilling fell 33.2 per cent while brownfields drilling rose by 9.1 per cent.

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) will also receive funding, with an additional $31.6 million over four years for the group to go towards the costs of operating the Open Pool Australian Lightwater (OPA) nuclear research reactor at full capacity.

There have been calls for the establishment of a Northern Special Economic Zone for some time, with Galaxy poll results released by the Institute of Public Affairs stating that more than half of those surveyed supported lower taxes to stimulate growth in the north.

and Northern Queensland will allow Australia to make the most of our natural mineral wealth and will reduce some of the problems that exist for people living in these regions”.

In Gina Rinehart’s book released just over a year ago she called for the establishment of a new economic zone, pushing her position as the chair of the group Australians for Northern Development and Economic Vision (ANDEV).

The government is also making : an 2 2enormous + 1 0 : 0push 0 on the infrastructure front, promising a six year $50

billion package, to build new roads, railways, and ports.

But it is not all good news for industry.

The National Low Emissions Coal Initiative, which helped companies develop and deploy technology to reduce emissions from coal use has had its funding reduced, although funding of $96.6 million over four years will remain available.

The much purported Diesel Fuel Tax Rebate Scheme cuts that were expected did not occur but the overall fuel excise tax cut did, which will lead to a wider increase in fuel costs.

For younger workers the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Programme – Tools for your Trade will end.

However from July this year the government will provide apprentices with concessional Trade Support Loans of up to $20 000 over a four-year apprenticeship.

The TARGET program will work in with the existing $19.5 million Strengthening Earth Resources initiative, which already helps to stimulate exploration and mining in Victoria.

SIMANDOU

Allegations of corruption and bribes are flying in the battle to access a massive iron ore deposit.

M

iners are always ready to fight fiercely for the rights to massive deposits.

But some are more willing to fight dirty and underhandedly than others.

Accusations of corruption and bribery have emerged over the battle for the highly prospective Simandou iron ore deposit in Guinea.

BSGR Resources, which has been accused of bribery and corruption by Rio Tinto over the Simandou deposit, is suing Guinea and its president and has made threats towards Rio Tinto as well.

It comes after the company’s concessions to Block 1 and 2 of the Simandou deposit were revoked by the Guinean Government.

Last month Rio Tinto filed a legal complaint against BSGR and Vale over 14

the loss of Block 1 and 2 of its Simandou mining concessions in Guinea.

In its filed complaint, Rio stated that negotiations between it and Vale to form a joint venture started in 2008, and Rio provided the information regarding Simandou.

It stated that “as Vale quickly surmised, gaining control of the Simandou deposit would strengthen Vale’s position in the world’s high-grade iron ore market, since the only other comparable source is Vale’s own Carajas iron ore mine in Brazil”.

“Defendant Vale saw a golden opportunity to not only obtain that control, but to do so on the cheap, when Vale learned from Rio Tinto that Defendants Steinmetz and BSG Resources Limited (collectively with its named subsidiaries and affiliates, “BSGR”) were attempting

to interfere with and steal Rio Tinto’s rights to the Simandou concession.

“Given BSGR’s reputation for corruption and bribery – well known among those active in the mining industry, including Vale – Vale was on notice that Steinmetz’s and BSGR’s efforts to misappropriate Rio Tinto’s rights included bribing various Guinean officials,” Rio Tinto said.

The miner went on to state that Vale and Steinmetz “entered into a conspiracy to misappropriate Rio Tinto’s Simandou rights” and used a campaign of bribery to do so.

It stated that Vale and Steinmetz’s BSGR then paid a $200 million bribe to the Guinean minister of mines, Mahmoud Thiam, for his assistance in “unlawfully securing Rio Tinto’s Simandou rights.

Responding to Rio Tinto’s legal action BSGR stated “this is the latest absurdity in the charade created by Guinean president Alpha Conde’s illegal crusade to reward political allies who helped rig his election”.

“Rio Tinto chose to do nothing with its mining rights so the mining rights were taken away. Baseless and bizarre lawsuits like this won’t change that fact”.

Speaking at its AGM, Rio Tinto chairman Jan du Plessis stated that Rio will fight BSGR for the rights to the site.

Following the revelation of this information, the Guinean Government revoked all of BSGR and Vale’s mining licences for both the Simandou and Zogota concessions in the country.

“The Government’s decision is based on fraudulent

conduct in connection with the acquisition of the mining licences and refers to a report by the Technical Committee for the Review of Mining Titles and Agreements (the “Technical Committee”) concluding that the mining concessions had been tainted by corrupt practices on the part of BSGR,” Vale said in a company statement.

Vale went on to say that “the Technical Committee did not find any involvement

by Vale in the fraudulent conduct relating to the acquisition of the mining licenses, which occurred more than one year before Vale made any investment in VBG, and recommended that the Guinean Government adopt measures to exclude VBG and BSGR, and BSGR’s affiliates, from the reallocation of the mining titles, but did not suggest that Vale be prowww.miningaustralia.com.au

The new D9T combines these unique design enhancements with all of the predecessor’s premium features, including a durable mainframe with cast steel main case; pivot shaft that transfers blade loads directly to the mainframe; modular drive train with three-speed power-shift transmission and differential steering system; heavy-duty undercarriage with track roller frames and bogie-suspended rollers; a wide selection of blades; intuitive controls; and expansive visibility.

The previous D9T model is still available in less regulated countries, as it only achieves emissions levels equivalent to Tier 2 and Tier 3 standards.

Cooling efficiency is enhanced with a new aluminium bar-plate radiator, which also adds durability and increased resistance to corrosion.

A new air-to-air aftercooler cools combustion intake air to increase combustion efficiency and fuel economy, and a new air-tooil hydraulic cooler precisely modulates temperatures for optimum performance and

component longevity.

For improved transmission shifting performance, the new Advanced Productivity Electronic Control System (APECS) provides a higher level of comfort for the operator, while increasing productivity through speed of operation.

APECS works in conjunction with the Enhanced Auto-Shift system, which automatically selects the optimum gear to engine-speed match, based on load and ground speed, to increase productivity and fuel economy.

The transmission also features an electronically controlled main relief valve, which reduces pressure during idling to save fuel.

Getting to the business end of the machine, Automated Blade Assist (ABA) allows operators to select pre-set blade-pitch positions for the dig, carry, and spread portions of the operation.

ABA is now standard with the D9T dual-tilt dozer blade option.

An autocarry system automates blade lift when carrying loads longer than 30 metres, which automatically positions the blade to minimise track slip.

The Adaptive Load Select system also enhances autocarry, which automatically adjusts the blade load based on factors such as soil type, moisture content and track performance.

Automatic Ripper Control also adjusts ground speed and ripper depth to minimise track slip.

For easy positioning of the blade’s cutting edge, the Cat Grade Control 3D system provides precise, automatic control with no blademounted masts and cables.

The 3D system reduces the need for grade staking and grade checking, meaning less need for people on the ground, means less risk and lower staffing costs.

Inside the cab, a new multi-colour, touch-screen information display enables the operator to monitor machine performance and adjust various parameters to suit task.

The work monitor screen provides real-time information about machine performance.

The D9T also features a new seatbelt reminder that illuminates an in-dash icon when the machine is started, and it adds an audio reminder if the machine is

placed in gear without fastening the belt.

Sound suppression packages are available to reduce average sound pressure at the operator’s ears to 74 dB(A) and spectator levels to 110 dB(A).

To enhance work site safety, a number of lighting packages are also available, including halogen, high intensity discharge and LED. Access and egress lighting controls are conveniently positioned and allow lights to be programmed to best suit the situation.

A ground-level service centre provides easy access to the electrical disconnect switch, which has built-in lockout capability, the engine shut-down switch and jump-start receptacle.

The D9T also has strategically placed anchorage points to enhance safety for service personnel work when performing repairs and maintenance.

ost underground mines throughout Australia and the rest of the world face the challenges of moving oversize ore at some point in a mine’s life.

Whether that oversize is created from slabbing of the hanging wall, inaccurate drilling, or just not enough autogenous grinding in the case of a block cave, large rocks can be very costly and extremely dangerous to deal with.

The cost can be created by several factors; actual cost and frustration in dealing with the oversize, cost in terms of lost production from the mine, and even the cost of walking away from a stope in extreme cases.

In Australia more than 85 per cent of our underground hard rock mines use bulk mining methods such as long hole open stoping, sub level caving or block caving.

Each of these common mining methods is susceptible to producing oversize material which can represent major challenges to the mine operator.

The mining method deployed typically determines where the oversize material presents.

In block caves and sub level caves it is typical for oversize to present at the draw point or in fact above the draw point, essentially closing the draw point until the material is dealt with.

Whereas in long hole open stopes it is common for oversize to appear inside the stope, blocking remote LHD (load, haul, dump machinery) access altogether and stopping, or at best, restricting production.

New approaches to hard rock mine stopes are increasing efficiency.

In any of these locations the oversize material must be removed before safe and efficient production can resume.

This requires remote capable equipment to be used to ensure personnel are removed from the area where the material is being blasted, with either water or explosives, or fragmented by a rock breaker. In each of these cases there is a risk of rock fall or material rush as the blockage is removed.

Some years ago MacLean Engineering recognised the problems and restrictions created by oversize material in mass mining methods.

The self contained units are all able to be remote operated.

They have since gone on to develop a mobile rock breaker, a 10 000 litre capacity water cannon, and a range of secondary breaking drills.

According to MacLean Engineering “the secondary breaking drill is fully functional on remotes, including tramming, to allow the self-contained machine to be moved into a stope unmanned then drill and charge an oversize piece of material for breaking, ensuring the safest and most efficient resumption of production possible”.

All of these units are available as remote capable and have been developed with remote partners Hardline Solutions to provide the optimal solution for this complicated application.

MacLean focused on hard rock innovation by providing a self-contained unit, with onboard air and water, along with their machine remotes.

They have even worked with several different explosives suppliers at different locations around the world to

provide remote hole charging capabilities using different explosives mediums such as Power Gel, ANFO and Emulsion to charge the drilled holes.

However even the most planned and thought out operation can still have dire consequences when dealing with hang ups and material in rush. So even with all personnel removed, the machine itself is still always at risk.

For the worst case scenarios they offer remote retrieval capability should it be required.

Their secondary breaking drills come in a range of configurations designed for different applications with a reach ranging from five, six and up to nine metres in vertical height.

According to the company they can be specified to fit into a profile as low as 2.2 metres high with an even lower version being worked on currently, while still maintaining both their FOPS and ROPS certification.

Opening up the

Central West Australia’s largest underground hard rock mine has officially opened.

T

he Cadia East gold mine, Australia’s largest new underground operation, has officially opened.

The mine is part of Newcrest Mining’s wider Cadia Valley Operations near Orange.

Cadia East has been developed as a large underground panel cave gold mine, and is the first of its type in the country.

Once it reaches full operational capacity in 2017, Cadia East will also be the largest hard rock underground mine in the country, and one of the largest in the world, producing 27 mtpa.

This will take the Cadia Valley Operations total production, which includes the Cadia East and Ridgeway mines, from 447,000 ounces a year to 700,000 ounces a year, rivalling other massive mines including the Super Pit and Boddington.

Newcrest has invested around $2 billion to develop the first panel cave and the expansion of processing facilities on site.

underway and due for completion in 2015.

Hosting a mineral resource of 2.8 billion tonnes, made up of 37 million ounces of gold and 7.5 million tonnes of copper, the mine will have a life of 30 years and support an expected 1900 direct and indirect jobs.

And with an all-in sustaining cash cost of just $381, Cadia East is set to be the envy of gold mining operations nation-wide.

Speaking at the official opening of the mine, Newcrest CEO Greg Robinson said Cadia East was a long-life asset and a “cornerstone of our company’s strategy”.

“Cadia East is at the forefront of innovation and is of international interest,” he said.

“Through extensive planning and teamwork, we have built a highly efficient, low cost mine more than 1.2km under the surface. We have continued to utilise the latest technology and challenged ourselves to improve bulk underground mining methods along the way.”

Technology advanced/leading edge of bulk caving

Seen as a cheaper alternative to other mining methods, Newcrest said it is at the forefront of implementing unique technologies, and has people working at Cadia East that are considered experts in the field.

General manager at CVO, Tony McPaul, said block caving at its Ridgeway mine gave Newcrest the chance to perfect the technology before applying the method at Cadia East.

And with the orebody at Cadia East perfect for its adoption, early work went into ensuring the proposed ramp up could develop as planned.

This included preconditioning with hydraulic fracturing, blast preconditioning, and an extensively blasted undercut to ensure the ore body is fractured at the correct points for caving.

At Cadia East the undercut sits 20 m above the extraction level, and is created to initiate caving. The undercut is made up of hundreds of drawbells and drawpoints which funnel ore to a point for collection, and is drilled and blasted progressively to

create a cavity into which the overlying ore can cave. This helps to initiate caving in the above ore body.

Ore is then dug from the bottom of each drawbell and delivered to a massive underground gyrating crusher, for resizing and delivery to the surface for processing.

“We use the stress from the cave to help break the rock,” McPaul explained.

“So we do all the preconditioning and then as you develop the undercut level it will determine where the stresses go in the rock and that stress then starts to break the rock up and starts the caving method.

“We have seismic monitoring gear set up around the mine so we can watch where that seismic activity is and change where we are undercutting to use that stress level to break the rock.

“All you want to do is make sure the rock starts to cave.”

McPaul said Newcrest has worked with block caving partner company Codelco to develop the technology to be efficient as possible at Cadia East.

Not only does this reduce costs associated with hiring drivers, but also increases safety underground as hazards related to workers and machinery coming into contact are minimised.

This is a theme common at the SAOC, where TV screens, graphs and data are used to make mining decisions.

SAOC operators monitor equipment and machinery located on the surface and underground to ensure optimal efficiencies, as live video from across the site is streamed to individual monitors, allowing many areas to be viewed at the same time.

Operators communicate with personnel on the ground via radio and phone, advising if any changes to the mine plan need to be made.

McPaul said this means operators are taken out of working in silos and can instead communicate with each other side by side to ensure to efficient and safe running of the mine.

Continuing with the theme of transparency, CVO holds an open day annually, with more than 3000 people streaming through the gates to take a closer look at the mine.

“It’s a way to engage the community and show them what we do,” McPaul explained.

In light of the success of these tours, CVO may also become a wider tourist attraction, with plans underway to build a tourist centre and lookout at the top of its closed open pit.

“It will be a place where residents can bring their family and friends from outside of the area to have a look at where they work and they feel quite special about being able to do that,” McPaul said.

And with a mostly residentialbased workforce, the company said it is committed to hiring locals to its ranks.

McPaul said the seeds of a number of apprenticeship and training programs are starting to bear fruit with recruits starting five years ago now undertaking more senior roles on site.

“The biggest advocates in the local community are our employees,” he stated.

ining is an expensive business. And as the mining booms slows down, they are looking to cut costs and increase productivity across the board.

Which means operators are on the hunt for efficiencies across all of their operations.

If a machine can be used for more than just a single purpose, the likelihood it will be employed on site rises; if it uses less fuel in doing so then its importance on site increases.

And as fuel prices rise miners are now more than ever finding it crucial to dial back the constant cost.

The key term, for all operations across the board, is efficiency and economical operation.

Metso have teamed up with Tutt Bryant Equipment to release the latest addition to Metso’s Lokotrack mobile crushing and screening range.

Designated the LTS1213S, the new mobile impactor with an onboard screen was unveiled to the market last month, in Queensland.

According to Metso “the LT1213S is more productive and economical than ever, making it a welcome addition to the Lokotrack range”.

“This versatile machine is equally suited to the processing of both new and aggregates,” the company said.

“It can be configured with the screen as a closed loop machine or the return conveyor can be slewed to build a stockpile. The screen is also readily 24

detached, allowing the LT1213S to be used as a straight crusher.”

One of the key focuses in the development of this new multi-use crusher has been economic operation.

A number of different elements have been combined to achieve a 15 per cent reduction in overall fuel consumption, according to Metso.

These new additions include a direct belt drive to the crusher; the optimisation of the engine speed via a newly designed and more efficient hydraulic system; the use of an independent demand-driven hydraulic drive fan; and a new idle mode, which is activated when the feeder and crusher are empty and de-activated when material is placed in the feeder.

The dual slope screen has an area of 5.75 square metres (and is 40 per cent larger than the previous model); a feed hopper area of six cubic metres; is powered by a 310kW Cat C13 engine; weighs up to 55 tonnes; whilst measuring 19 metres in length, 3.2 metres in width, and 3.6 metres in height.

This design has allowed it to achieve an increase in throughput of finished product of between 20 and 30 per cent.

“By addressing what is the limiting factor in a crusher/screen circuit, the practical output of the Lokotrack 1213S is significantly greater than that of its predecessor, setting it apart in its class,” Metso said.

Designed with a direct belt drive and lower fuel consumption during operation.

“The new machine is designed to set-up, change configuration, and pack up without the need for any assist equipment such as a crane, or for heavy manual handling,” Metso said.

“For remote areas (such as those typically found on mine sites) this can add up to significant savings in crewing equipment and crane hire.”

In regards to actually getting it to site, the machine’s conveyors are all stowed onboard the crusher for transport.

Its radial side conveyor can be slewed 90 degrees from the closed circuit position against the side of the machine to the stockpiling position in under two minutes.

The side conveyor also requires no assistance in setting up for operation or stowing for transport.

The machine has also been designed for greater serviceability.

“The polycarbonate cover over the crusher drive belts is significantly lighter than previous steel covers, and can be readily opened and propped by just one person,” Metso said.

“The rotor cover has power opening and the rotor can be rotated hydraulically for replacing wear parts. An onboard job facilitates handling breaker bars.

“Onboard legs allow the screen unit to be lowered to the ground and removed for maintenance and for changing screen sizes,” it added. www.miningaustralia.com.au

Breaking down comminution A conference in Cape Town has highlighted the role comminution will play in mining’s future.

he Cape Town Comminution ’14 conference attracted a host of globally recognised experts in the field, each with their own offerings to the body of knowledge on the science of crushing and milling.

Dr. Wolfgang Peukert, director of the Institute of Particle Technology at the University of Erlangen in Germany, presented the keynote lecture ‘A multiscale view on comminution’.

Peukert observed that there was much to be gained if the science of comminution and industry could come together.

Modelling now gives us a greater understanding of what goes on in the milling circuit, but the models must be checked with reality, especially with regard to complex, multiphase particles.

Anglo-American’s Jerry Mann expressed the need to look towards understanding selective liberation rather than simply breakage, and to use models in process control systems that might help to improve understanding of process mineralogy and variability in ores.

Rob Morrison of JKMRC agreed with Mann, saying that few had discussed the liberation of valuable components, the main aim of comminution in mining, and that the real challenge was to liberate and discard the major proportion of the ore, or gangue, at the coarse size.

Morrison argued that we cannot afford to liberate the valuable minerals, and that the most difficult decision to make in terms of economics was how far to grind.

Solids modelling conveys SOLID performance New programs are allowing for the de-siloing of the solids and fluids in minerals processing.

gnoring or underestimating the need for rigorous design and optimal operation of the solids section of processing in mining may reduce design efficiency, encourage over-design of equipment, add unnecessary operating energy costs, and result in reduced throughput and lower product quality.

The solids section is typically only a small part of an overall production process, but may have a significant influence on the overall process performance and the quality of the final product.

The process engineers model the fluid part of a process in a simulator software tool, while particle scientists within the same company model the solids part of the process in a spreadsheet tool.

However there is a disconnect between the two.

There is limited sharing of process data with these disparate software tools so optimisation of the overall process design is more or less impossible using this historical workflow.

The second challenge is that to reduce the risk of bottlenecks, equipment is often over-designed or installed in excess leading to inflated capital costs.

The solids section of a process plant, in many instances, is considered a minor part of an overall production process, but may have a significant influence on the overall process performance and the quality of the final product.

In response to the lack of a commercially available industrial simulator to rigorously model the solids section of an industrial process, the standalone solids simulator SolidSim was developed by solids experts and industry participants.

SolidSim introduced a generally applicable flowsheet simulation system to rigorously describe granular solids and the machines and equipment of particle technology.

tion and agglomeration, gas/solid, and solid/liquid separation.

In addition, an easy-to-use workflow for the definition of particle size distributions was introduced with an enhanced results representation that allows visualising particle size distributions (cumulative, density, or RRSB), and apparatus-specific results with the click of a button.

Also, characteristic diameters such as d25, d50, or the Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) are shown as stream results.

Also included are the conveying and fluidised bed models and the spray dryer model, and the ability to model reactions in the fluidised bed model.

As the technology previously focused on the fluids model this means there is now greater efficiency as the modelling processes for the two models are no longer siloed.

To further streamline the workflow, new conceptual models have been introduced with the latest release of Aspen Plus.

The conceptual models are an enhancement of the existing solids blocks and allow users to model solids

processing steps at different levels of accuracy from conceptual to rigorous without changing the structure of the flowsheet.

With conceptual models, process engineers that are not familiar with solids modelling can be eased into learning how to use the capabilities.

The conceptual model also offers the possibility that process engineers and particle scientists can collaborate more closely.

When setting up the model of a combined fluids and solids process, the process engineer can use the conceptual models to describe the solids section of the process.

Having analysed the first simulation results, the process engineer can decide what parts of the solids section need to be modelled more rigorously, and if necessary, ask the particle scientist to help select and parameterise the rigorous model.

Incorporating granular solids and the corresponding solids processing steps, with the fluids section, when modelling any chemical process plant has, until now, been a vital missing link.

A

simple mixing technology, developed by the CSIRO and Queensland Alumina, is ready to make its mark on the resource industry as its money and time saving benefits come to light.

Swirl Flow was first installed at QAL in 1998 and has since been working quietly to prove its worth as an innovative minerals processing solution.

It works by simplifying the mixing of solids in suspension by creating a novel fluid flow pattern that mimics a tornado within largescale tanks.

Using a radial agitator located just below the liquids surface to create a tornadolike flow pattern to the bottom of 30 metre tanks, it first lifts solids to the top of the tank which then swirl downwards and repeat the process.

It was only in July of last year that CSIRO gained the full rights to commercialise Swirl Flow,paving the way

for the technology to be rolled out to the resource industry as an alternative minerals processing method.

CSIRO’s commercial manager for Swirl Flow, Dr John Farrow, said the technology’s unique fluid flow pattern offers many advantages over traditional agitation systems, forcing many companies to sit up and take notice of the advantages it can provide.

Farrow said the CSIRO is in talks with numerous would-be proponents who are keen to see how the capital savings, operating efficiencies and safety features of Swirl Flow can benefit their operations.

Much lower capital costs, simple operating performance, emhanced off bottom rear suspension, the ability to keep scale formation down (doubling the tank life in many cases), negligible rotor wear (die to its low tip speed, and the fact that the rotor sits at the top of the

tank (greatly simplifying any required maintenance) are all important plus sides of the innovation.

Farrow said most common problems seen in traditional mixing methods are eliminated with Swirl Flow.

For example, positioning the rotor at the top of the tank means if there is a power failure the solids n the tank settle away from the rotor.

This means when the tank is restarted it is running in clear liquid and so the rotor starts to mix up all those settled solids.

This is unlike traditional systems in which settled solids may cause the impeller to get stuck.

“For all applications, the prime need is to ensure no solids settle to the bottom of the tank, but Swirl Flow can also address the need to avoid particle attrition (for example when resins are used to absorb valuable metals such as carbon in the gold industry),

to provide effective oxygen transfer or to minimise scale formation.”

Swirl Flow also gives a much higher wall velocity so the fluid flow over the wall and down the tank is much higher than it is in traditional mixing methods.

As such, the tendency of scale to build up on the wall is much less with Swirl Flow than it is with traditional mixing, allowing the tank to stay in operation for much longer periods, increasing production and reducing costs.

“A couple of the companies we’re talking to at the moment are having issues with shafts breaking – in comparison Swirl Flow has a very short shaft and therefore it won’t be a problem,” Farrow explained.

The reduction in capital costs is also an advantage and at QAL it costs less than half the amount to install the Swirl Flow system rather than to replace existing agitation.

“Full scale imppellers

typically need replacing every three years due to erosion, whereas the Swirl rotors that have been installed at QAL shows no sign of erosion, some after 15 years” Health and safety is also greatly improved with the installation of the technology as personnel do not need to enter the tank to conduct maintenance; it can all be done from above the tank.

“What we have is a very viable, robust and proven technology,” Farrow said.

Farrow said an alumia company is looking to trial the technology, with the zinc and gold industry also interested in what it has to offer.

Farrow said Swirl Flow can be applied to most situations where you need to mix a particular slurry in a particular sized tank.

“It’s a new offering which has very wide applicability,” Farrow said.

“It is truly a tornado in a tank.”

ith the current focus on greater efficiency and cost effectiveness, resources suppliers are always trying to develop a better mousetrap.

One Australian engineering firm has responded to the challenge by building a new, fully adjustable transport frame which features all around poly side curtains for a major iron ore miner.

These locally designed and built transport frames are adjustable for load fixing and provide a number of advantages over other traditional transportation methods for heavy and bulky items such as gear boxes, motors, and pulleys.

Engineered to confirm to AS4991 and to the National Transport Commission guidelines, the transport frames are constructed from heavy gauge steel with the side curtains made from industrial strength chloride PVC. “This is a key feature,” engineering company Minprovise said, “because carted items are often stored on a hardstand, in the weather, for some time after unloading”.

“Total weather protection is provided thanks to the roof and wall coverings.

“A large, permanent plaque area for signage is even provided, saving time and frustration which sometimes occurs when trying to locate this kind of information with other systems.”

The adjustable frames come in six, eight, ten, and twelve tonne WLL models with purpose-built transport frames to suit any application.

The previously mentioned frame’s side curtains are one of the key ad-

vantages of the transport frame, as it provides any operators with a greater ability to quickly examine the complete item by peeling back the Velcroheld curtain.

The frames have PVC curtains for inspection ease.

This is much easier than current methods, which have opaque wrapping, as once the shrunk wrapped material is cut or torn to unveil the item it can’t be replaced.

“The poly side curtains are also much stronger and able to breathe, releasing moisture.”

Because the longitudinal rails are slotted, the latitudinal rails can be easily slid to snugly meet the item being transported.

Then the fastening points on the latitudinal rails can also be slid along those rails to secure the goods during transport, as well as accommodate an variety of different sized/shaped goods.

Another advantage is the six point rubber vibration mounting system positioned between the support rails and base frame. These give the carried item a high degree of cushioning from vibrations and bumps in transit, potentially preventing damage to fragile parts such as bearings.

HOISTING consistency A combined shock pulse and vibration monitoring approach to hoist maintenance has increased reliability.

A

s the costs of mining creep ever upwards miners are increasingly recognising the benefits of predictive maintenance.

Because in this capital intensive industry, consistent uptimes, that is the equipment working when it is meant to be working, is key to profitability in these slimmer times.

One of the commonly used maintenance and monitoring techniques is shock pulse measurement and vibration analysis.

Both are widely used for monitoring the ongoing condition of industrial equipment, as the two work together to provide a reliable solution for predictive maintenance of mining equipment.

At its Renstrom mine, Swedish miner Boliden recently implemented high definition shock pulse measurement technology in conjunction with vibration analysis to monitor the mechanical condition of its multi-rope friction hoist, which was recently converted from a tower-mounted setup 40

into a ground-mounted hoist system.

The shock pulse technology is useful for detection of bearing damages in industrial environments, while vibration technology is optimal for low frequency related fault conditions like unbalance, loose gears, and misalignment.

Hoist performance is vital to underground mining operations, and the ongoing tough operating conditions and high availability requirements make it critical to constantly know the mechanical condition of the hoist at all times.

The costs of hoist failure or having one out of commission due to unexpected downtimes are well known.

In 2009 a hoist failure at BHP’s Olympic Dam mine caused a skip loaded with ore to fall down its primary Clark Shaft, which brought the majority of the operation’s ore to the surface.

As the loaded skip fell it caused another on a linked cable to fly up

the shaft, damaging the headframe.

BHP put the accident down to a failure of its computer braking system.

At the time a BHP spokesperson, Kelly Quirke, told Australian Mining that “detailed investigations by the company, with a third party independent expert, have found that a fault in the logic of the braking system was the root cause of the accident,” she said.

“The fault prevented the system’s breaking mechanism from engaging fully, which in turn allowed the hoisting system to freefall to the bottom of the shaft.”

This single incident, due to one hoist failing, saw production fall by 75 per cent at the shaft, and cost the company close to $200 million in ‘idle capacity costs’, and forced it to use its secondary Whenan shaft.

Constant condition monitoring is crucial.

To ensure peak performance at its own Renstrom mine, Boliden in-

stalled an online conditioning monitoring system which provides real time condition based information on the status of its critical components.

Mats Johansson, the maintenance manager at Renstrom, explained that “the mine hoist is critical equipment for us and the heart of the business; if the hoist malfunctions production more of less comes to a halt”.

“On this type of equipment we need good control and that makes online monitoring necessary.”

The site’s hoist is made of up a frequency controlled motor, a twostage gearbox, a drum, the wires, and two skips.

The skips themselves are mounted at the tail end of the wires with a lifting capacity of around five tonnes each.

When it was installed last year Intellinova Compact, with SPM HD shock pulse measurement technology, was implemented during the commissioning phase to provide a baseline from the new hoist.

Fifteen transducers are used to cover the motor, gearbox, and drum; ten shocks pulse transducers to monitor bearing condition, and four vibration transducers to detect low frequency vibrations such as gear mesh frequencies in the gearbox or unbalance in the drum.

Additionally, RPM is measured on the motor drive shaft at one pulse per revolution.

Using shock pulse transducers with the SPM HD technology provides a capability to detect bearing conditions.

The multiple gear-mesh frequencies in a gearbox significantly affect normal vibration transducers, making the spectrum and overall values very hard to interpret. The shock pulse transducer is not affected by normal mesh frequencies – as long as the gear teeth are in good condition and no impacts are emitted – however is there are any irregularities in the contact surfaces between the gearbox teeth it will trigger an immediate response with easily interpreted readings.

Measuring maintenance

One of the problems of setting up predictive maintenance programs for hoists is the limited measurement ‘window’ created by the hoist’s cycle times.

In shallow mines short cycles may be a challenge in terms of very limited measuring times, reducing the potential to create accurate measurements, however this was not a problem at the Renstrom mine.

For example a hoist completing one cycle – lifting one slip from 900 metres up to ground level – in 120 seconds.

It accelerates quickly and the drum reaches a stable 51.3 RPM. Based on the 120 second cycle time at 51 RPM, one hoist cycle equals 102 revolutions of the drum.

Selecting a measuring time of 20 revolutions for all measuring points on the slowest shaft ensures enough readings without using triggered measurements.

Even if some measurements are lost if the window happens to hit during a rapidly changing RPM due to acceleration or slowing, most of the readings will be taken during stable RPM conditions.

The parameters measured and trended are HDm for all shock pulse measurements and vibration velocity RMS. The measurement interval is set to thirty minutes for each measuring point. The long cycle time of 120 seconds gives plenty of time to measure, resulting in a number of readings per day on all measuring points.

During the first six months of measurement at Renstrom – from July 2013 to January 2014 – a number of observations were made, such as readings showing that gearbox data provided by the supplier was incorrect – as the readings did not match the expected results according to the gearbox specifications.

This, on top of other data such as system performance, has provided full control of mission critical application.

The Queensland Mining and Engineering Exhibition will celebrate a milestone as it reaches its 21st year.

The show will held during a tumultuous time for Queensland mining industry, as the state’s main mining sector – coal – is facing a serious downturn.

Speaking on the timing of the event, REEDMININGEVENTS director Paul Baker described the exhibition “as an indicator of where the Queensland mining industry is currently situated and where it is headed”.

First held in 1993, the event has continued its focus on providing attendees with innovative technological solutions and techniques designed to improve mining efficiency and productivity.

And this year is no different.

The TechTrails, which featured at Reed Exhibitions’ National Manufacturing Week, will also be making their appearance at the Queensland Mining and Engineering Exhibition.

These TechTrails are designed to “filter attend-

ees to stands based on their product or service categories, maximising their face-to-face time with suppliers that have solutions to meet their business needs”.

These trails include automation; engineering; environmental management; materials handling; minerals processing, open cut mining technology; operational safety; underground mining technology; as well as one highlighting new exhibitors to the show.

“Pioneered at AIMEX 2013, the TechTrails initiative will act as a filtering system that navigates attendees to suppliers who have the solutions that relate to their business needs,” Baker said.

It has also developed a standalone QME mobile app, which can be used offline, and allows users to cre-

ate a profile, preselect suppliers to visit, and engage with others users at the show.

“This year at QME we have incorporated various strategies to ensure that visitors’ time onsite is as efficient as possible, by connecting them with the suppliers of their choice, to maximise their experience. As a result decision-makers and attendees will be afforded an unrivalled platform to source the latest ground-breaking solutions that stem from technological advances and innovation,” he said.

‘The TechLab’ is also a key feature of the show.

It will showcase new step change technology and supports the focus of the exhibition to be a platform for mining companies to source new innovations for mining processes.

The Queensland Mining and Engineering Exhibition will run from 22-24 July.

As part of this hub within QME’s Interactive Zone there will also be a series of TechTalks that will be delivered by a number of exhibitors, and is just one of a number of free education streams available at the show.

However the event this year is not just about the equipment and technology.

According to REEDMININGEVENTS it “has introduced a range of measures aimed at providing attendees and suppliers with the best experience as possible at QME, with a number of new initiatives being implemented, which includes a QME mobile app, theme days such as the Women in Mining Day, and a new mechanism that maximises the time of visitors with suppliers of their choice and a hub for step change technology”.

In the vein of all of its recent mining events, its Women in Mining theme day will take precedence during the exhibition and conferences.

Underground mining boots UNDERGROUND miners shouldn’t need to worry about uncomfortable boots from now on, with the latest range of Blundstone fit-for-purpose underground boots soon to become available.

The Tasmanian boot manufacturer has so far only called it “style number 917”, that hasn’t stopped them for winning top honours at the NSW Mineral’s Council Health and Safety Innovation Awards.

In order to develop this seemingly unique boot, Blundstone teamed up with the management at the Centennial coal mine to perform extensive Award winning underground coal wear trials.

Michelle Vince was part of the team that conducted research to develop the boot, who commended Centennial for their openness to participating in the development process.

“The really great part about this project was Centennial being so approachable,” she said. “We had found it almost impossible to get past the front gates other mines prior to this.”

Vince said that ordinary boots were getting an average lifespan of 8-12 weeks under the punishment of underground work, and that they didn’t want to produce another inferior product.

“When we met with Centennial they said ‘look, we use your gumboots, they do need improvement, but what we really need is this leather boot’.

“They took us underground to let us have a look at the environment, which was really important because it gave us the opportunity to speak to the guys actually using the footwear, and they could show us their issues on the spot.”

“As [Centennial’s procurement] said to me, how do you think you can design a boot for us if you haven’t been underground?”

The workers were only to eager to tell Blundstone about their problems, which mainly involved the boots repeatedly getting wet and drying out, which would make the leather hard.

Internally they just weren’t waterproof, they were really uncomfortable, the leather would get really hard from being wet and drying out and in some cases workers were actually cutting the boots off their feet,” Vince said.

“They couldn’t get their boots out of their feet at the end of the day because the heel cup area had collapsed… they’re pretty harsh conditions, it was a real eye opener for me.

“It just goes to show, not all R and D should be done in the lab,” she said.

The 917 boasts several new features, so innovative that they may see inclusion in the design of ordinary surface-work boots.

Quieter rock drills BOART Longyear has released a new rock drill, the S250-M3, designed to cut noise levels. Featuring advanced noise suppression and lower vibration “it represents a significant improvement over the existing S250 rock drill” and “improves drilling production and decreases fatigue to ears, hands, and feet,” Boart said. Its drill hex chuck ends are available in both 22 mm and 25 mm.

New down the hole hammers BOART Longyear has released a new BLH series of DTH hammers and bits. According to the company these new hammers and bits have been designed to increase productivity in reverse circulation drilling and conventional down-the-hole drilling.

“The new BLH series can be used in almost all DTH applications, including geotechnical drilling, quarrying, mining, water well/ geothermal, and mineral exploration,” Boart Longyear said. The series includes Includes valve and valveless models. the valved BLH5, BLH3, and the valve-less BLH1 models. Designed to be compact, the BLH5 hammer has a reduced length of 30 per cent and is 20 per cent lighter than typical DTH hammers. Boart explains that this new design provides “balanced operation with minimised vibration due to the piston in the hammer having virtually the same mass as the bit; better productivity in various ground conditions due to a high frequency, low vibration operation; eliminates problematic exhaust tubes or foot valves on bit; and provide a greater resistance to breakage through the splines as it has the largest shank cross section available by close to 50 per cent”. The B15 is a ruggedised smartphone, designed by Cat specifically for the mining and construction industries.

Clear hard hats A common problem for hard hat wearers seems to have been solved with the simplest of ideas. One of the worst things about having to wear hard hats indoors is that you bump your head on things that you couldn’t see. The brim of the hat gets in the way, and you can’t see low hanging pipes and beams unless you actually look right up at them. Outdoors, the visual problem is quite the same, and riggers The hard hats provide greater wearer vision. frequently turn their hats backwards to they can dog the crane without having to crane their own heads right back, and wind up with a sore neck. Yet no-one has come up with a solution like this one, not in 100 years of hard hat manufacture.

The solution: Make the hat see-through.

Honeywell have only been in the hard hat game since last year, but they’ve recently announced the next generation of hard hats, featuring a translucent design, called SEETHRU. The see-through peak allows the wearer to look upwards without the need to tilt the head back, which throughout the working day causes a lot of discomfort in the neck. As for people who turn their hats backwards, it means they can keep the impact protection of the peak, and not have to reverse the head harness inside the helmet.

The Honeywell SEETHRU hard hat is available as a vented model and fits all head sizes from 50cm to 66cm. Made from strong polycarbonate, the SEETHRU weighs only 386g. It’s also UV400 stabilized to be suitable for indoor as well as outdoor use. The helmet is available in a range of colours; red, blue, green, smoke, orange, yellow, pink and clear, and it can also be fitted with a metal lamp bracket for underground use, earmuff adapters, and faceshield attachments.

Mag drive pumps KSB has launched the latest generation of its Magnochem mag-drive pumps.

Available in 52 sizes, the new series is primarily characterised by high outputs Extremely resistant to corrosion. per size ensuring extremely low energy consumption. All pump characteristics conform to the ISO 2858/EN 22 858/ISO 5199 standards. The pumps’ engineers have paid particular attention to the design of the magnetic coupling and the routing of circulation, cooling and lubricating flows. This allows the operator to choose between four operating modes ranging from a simple internal circulation to a dead-end configuration with an auxiliary hydraulic system. As an option, an external heat exchanger can be installed. This means that the pump set can be optimised for the pumping of polymerising, coagulating and crystallising as well as low-boiling fluids.

The containment shrouds are available in metals such as Hastelloy or Titanium and can also be made of zirconium oxide depending on customer requirements. The latter is extremely resistant to corrosion and does not produce eddy currents when a magnetic field passes through it.

Unnecessary heat losses which would reduce output and compromise pump efficiency are thus eliminated. The engineers have selected samarium-cobalt as a material for the magnets as it is highly temperatureresistant and has excellent magnetic characteristics. Diamond-coated plain bearings ensure effective anti-seizure properties in the event of insufficient lubrication – a feature which, combined with an optimised arrangement of the radial plain bearings, is particularly beneficial in ensuring the pump’s operating reliability. Multiple coupling dimensions are available for each pump size, avoiding the need for oversized magnetic drives. The pumps feature very low vibration levels during operation as each pump rotor is subjected to static and dynamic balancing.

Camp site steam cleaners CAMP life for a peggy is not as easy as it looks: They’ve got a lot to deal with. Yet a peggy doesn’t get much in the way of credit for doing their bit for the mining game, the occasional thank you, and a fairly tight paycheck compared to what the T/As get on site. Anything that can make a peggy’s job easier means more rooms get cleaned in the camp, and everyone is happy, so any improvement to the cleaning regimen is a godsend. Kärcher are well known in the mining world for their pressure cleaners, but they also produce a range of steam cleaners that can make the thankless job of single quarters bathroom cleaning much easier.

The Kärcher Professional DE 4002 is one of the best mobile powered cleaning tools for thoroughly cleaning out unhygenic crevices without having to scrub away with a pad or brush. The DE 4002 has been designed with all the efficiency and practicality required in professional cleaning situations. The boiler can be continuously replenished by an additional water tank, allowing extended operation throughout the day. A total of 4.6 litres of water in the boiler and supply tank will produce approximately 6000 litres of steam, which equates to around five hours of uninterrupted work. Due to the fact that the supply tank is not directly under pressure, it can be refilled without waiting for the unit to cool.

Steam cleaning is completely chemical free, making the DE 4002 an environmentally friendly option where waste water from cleaning has to be let into a sump. However, crossing a multitude of terrains can sometimes cause concern for user safety. The DE 4002 is housed in a splash proof casing, and features a low voltage 12V handle. The handle is also touch sensitive, meaning it will automatically shut down as soon as the operator lets it go. A 2.7 metre steam hose allows for greater lateral and overhead operation without having to lift the unit. The DE 4002 is mounted on a smooth double caster, and two sturdy rear wheels so that it can be dragged around from room to room. 3M launches new mining product vending machine

Cuts both time and workforce needed for tyre changing.

Tyre handlers HEDWELD have released a new industrial tyre handler for mining workshops. The TriliftTH15000 Workshop Tyre Handler has been specifically designed to provide a maintenance tool for the safe removal and installation of wheel assemblies from a range of earthmoving and plant equipment. As the size of mining equipment grows, traditional methods for handling components have become more hazardous. With respect to tyres the size and weight have increased progressively with each new model. For example the size and weight of a Cat 777 tyre (a 27 R49) is 2835 lb and measures 8.8 ft. by comparison to the large tyres Komatsu 930E has a tyre (a 50.00 R57) that weighs more than 15,700 lb and measures 12.6 ft. On the Komatsu 960E, the tyre (a 56.00 R63) weighs 16,500 lb and stands 12.7 ft in diameter. There are bigger tyres and some tyre diameters exceed 13 ft. Traditionally, these components are moved by equipment such as Telehandlers, mobile cranes and forklifts. These items have limitations due to their physical size, manoeuvrability and safety. A number of incidents occur every year involving machines used in this manner. The functional need that the TH15000 fulfils is to minimise the space required to remove and replace a tyre. Traditionally, the customer would have to park a truck in the middle bay leaving a bay free either side so they can drive in a large mobile crane or 25 tonne fork lift. This is very space inefficient. The TH15000 has been designed with a narrow footprint to fit within one bay allowing for all bays to be utilised for other maintenance tasks as shown in this render. In independent trials carried out at Komatsu’s workshops in WA it cut down time from 160 minutes while using a forklift down to 100 minutes, while at the same time reducing workers needed for the task from six down to two. Ergonomically the TH15000 is driven using a remote control to give the user improved visibility when aligning the product with the component and removes any need for manual handling of the product. The TH15000 also has an optional Jib Arm to support the weight of the rattle gun that is required to remove the wheel nuts.

This position is responsible for not only building on the success of our existing operations, but also business development, staff coordination and ensuring maximum utilisation of our equipment. You will ensure the team meets all customer requirements and the expectations of Fenner Dunlop regarding quality, safety, efficiency and effectiveness. You will provide a strong customer focused leadership while controlling the operational costs of the region.

You will be known as the go to person, your belt splicing experience along with your leadership ability will showcase your strong coordination ability.

Your main responsibilities include; planning upcoming shuts and maintenance work; job/planning scoping; managing resources; account management and providing technical advice and support. You will be exposed to different clients to promote an impressive selection of products and services.

Duties may include being responsible for business development with a focus on increased customer base and increased product sales; prepare and present quotations; manage resources for planned work in the Mt Isa region; performing belt splicing and rubber lining tasks when required; conducting Belt and Conveyor system Audits; being responsible for account management and service customers; liaising with clients and supervisors to ensure jobs are planned, scoped and executed to the highest standard; promoting OHS and compliance with the QLD OHS Team; and ensuring company policies and procedures, including quality assurance are promoted and adhered to.

What you need will be extensive supervisory experience within mining or workshop environment; demonstrated understanding of belt splicing and mechanical processes; experience in a similar service management role; you must have proven sales/account management experience; while an established contact network within Mt Isa region will be high advantageous.

There needs to be a dedication to customer satisfaction and service; you must be a self-starter with exceptional organisational skills; have an ability to prioritise and schedule daily activities; have sound communication and interpersonal skills; and intermediate computer skills to produce reports and quotes.

GEOLOGIST ORE DEFINITION The 55 million tonnes per annum Roy Hill Project represents the next generation of integrated iron ore mine, rail and port projects to be developed in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Situated 115 kilometres north of Newman, in one of the world’s premier iron ore provinces, the world class Roy Hill Project is the only independent iron ore project with West Australian majority ownership.

With a defined mineralisation of more than 2.4 billion tonnes of high grade iron ore, enough to sustain a mine of life of more than 20 years, the Roy Hill Project is introducing a new wave of innovation, technology and knowledge to Australia’s iron ore industry.

We are currently looking to appoint an experienced Geologist Ore Definition for our Roy Hill Mine. Reporting to the Manager Geology, this role functions as an integral part of part of the Ore Definition team and is responsible for compiling geological data for use in modelling, mine planning and ore quality predictions.

This role is predominately responsible for the supervision of safe and accurate drilling, consisting of Reverse Circulation (RC), Diamond Core, Wide Diameter and Bulk Sample drill programmes.

To be considered for this opportunity you will offer: Tertiary degree in Geology or Geoscience • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Exploration or Resource Definition within the iron ore industry is mandatory • Current Australian manual C class drivers licence is essential • Proven track record supervising daily operations of field programmes • Exposure to GIS or modelling software e.g. ArcGIS, acQuire, Vulcan, Micromine or SURPAC • Proficient in Microsoft office suite, predominately in Word and Excel • Exposure to a drillhole database e.g. acQuire • Ability to work safely without supervision and in a team • Leadership skills and the ability to training and mentor junior members of staff • Current senior first aid certificate • 4WD defensive driving certificate • Membership of and contribution to professional organization (AusIMM, AIG etc.) would be valuable.

Working on 3 days on, 3 nights on and 6 off roster and reporting to the Superintendent Mobile & Light Equipment, you will be implementing effective maintenance practices on plant and equipment and ensuring timely cost effective repairs with minimal down time; responding to system disturbance or equipment failures and working to restore normal operations; undertaking planned maintenance work effectively either individually or in a team environment and performing plant preventative maintenance assigned tasks; promoting HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) awareness amongst the group; and fostering a culture of zero harm and continuous improvement To succeed in this exciting and challenging role, you will have an electrical trade qualification; a Western Australia (WA) Electrical Workers licence; experience with Electrical Installation testing and tagging or similar; a current Western Australian “C” class driver’s licence; a Heavy Rigid (HR) licence and Senior First Aid certificate will be desirable. Working knowledge of SAP and experience in maintaining repair electric drive mobile equipment such as 830E Haul Trucks and Le Tourneau Wheel Loaders will be highly regarded.
