Keeping Under pressure

E

very year when the Australian summer rolls in, I’m reminded just how brutal our heat can be. It’s the kind of dry, sizzling warmth that shimmers off the road and bakes the inside of your car before you’ve even turned the key.

And every summer, without fail, my mind goes back to my old 1993 Toyota Corolla Seca — a car I loved dearly, but one whose air-conditioning system deserved an early retirement.

On 40-degree days it basically blew air with the enthusiasm of a tired desk fan, leaving me to arrive at every destination looking like I’d jogged there instead of driven.

Pair that with its inability to handle steep inclines, and you have one helluva car.

Those memories feel especially sharp now as workshops across the country prepare for another scorching season.

We all know summer places enormous strain on vehicles, from cooling systems to batteries to air-con units far worse than my old Seca’s.

And the pressure doesn’t stop at the machines — it falls on the people who keep them running: our mechanics, apprentices, and workshop teams.

But right now, the automotive repair industry is staring down a challenge that runs deeper than the heat.

We’re experiencing a serious skills shortage, one that’s increasingly worrying

employers, associations, and training providers alike.

Recent concern has centred on the Federal Government’s decision to halve key apprenticeship incentives from $5,000 to $2,500 starting in 2026.

At a time when the industry urgently needs more hands, more training, and more support, this move has many stakeholders worried we’re heading for a dire shortage of qualified mechanics.

Cutting incentives risks making the pathway into the trade less attractive for young people — and less viable for employers already stretched thin.

The flow-on effects will hit everything from diagnostics and electrical work to fire-safety knowledge, which is becoming increasingly vital as modern vehicles introduce new kinds of risks.

As we gear up for another punishing summer, it’s clear that keeping Australia moving safely will depend not just on reliable parts or clever tools, but on skilled people. This issue dives into the challenges, the stakes, and the opportunities to strengthen the workforce our industry relies on.

Discussing mental health continues to be a struggle for many in the auto repair industry, something Cars for Hope aims to change.

I

n workshops across the country, automotive technicians are solving some of the toughest problems on the road, but the hardest challenges are often the ones we don’t see.

The Australian automotive sector is built on resilience, precision and problem-solving, yet those same traits can make it difficult for people to speak openly when they’re struggling.

Mental health affects every part of our industry: apprentices under pressure, business owners carrying financial strain, technicians working long hours, and employees dealing with stress both on and off the job.

And while the culture in many workshops is shifting, the stigma around mental health hasn’t disappeared - especially among men, who make up the majority of our workforce.

A community that cares Behind the scenes, the automotive community is often incredibly supportive.

Mates look out for each other, shop owners treat their teams like family, and car culture itself is built on connection.

But unlike a faulty alternator, mental health challenges don’t show up on a scan tool. They’re easier to hide, and all too often, they stay hidden.

That’s why organisations that speak directly to our community’s culture are so important.

And why, this year, the Motor Traders’ Association of NSW is choosing to highlight a charity created by the automotive community, for the automotive community.

Cars For Hope was founded on a simple truth: sometimes the easiest way to talk is when you’re side-by-side, not face-toface.

What began as a grassroots movement has grown into a national mental-health initiative that uses car culture as a bridge to connection and help.

The organisation works to connect people to support, and reduce the stigma around mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety and suicide.

Sometimes it means recognising the signs of burnout early.

Preparation is key

Skillaroos were able to get a gauge of the global competition at a recent event in Taipai.

R

emoving the prospect of medals can, paradoxically, be one of the most effective things you do for a young competitor.

That was the premise when WorldSkills Australia accepted guest status at the 3rd WorldSkills Asia Competition in Taipei last week.

Sixteen members of our Skillaroos Training Squad — roughly one-third of the group preparing for WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 — competed without eligibility for official awards or placement on the leaderboard.

The outcome exceeded every expectation we had for an early-cycle training exercise.

Across 14 skill categories, including three that have not appeared in an Australian international team for more than ten years

(Autobody Repair, Industrial Control, and Web Technologies), our competitors faced a field of 320 entrants from 28 countries.

The environment was markedly higher in standard and intensity than our National Championships.

Excitement building Every Australian competitor improved on their domestic scores, in several cases by substantial margins.

the delegation would have earned one silver, one bronze, and one Medallion for Excellence.

More valuable than any hypothetical result, however, was the observable acceleration in technical and mental development.

Competitors returned with new benchmarking data, revised training priorities, and a clearer understanding of the gap that still exists—and how rapidly it is closing.

Beyond the workshop floor, the event reinforced the broader role of skills competitions. Thousands of Taiwanese secondary students visited daily, engaging directly with competitors and experts.

Several of our team reported conversations that visibly shifted students’ perceptions of vocational pathways.

The formal elements — President Lai Ching-te’s address at the Opening Ceremony, the multilingual oaths, the scale of the venue — left a lasting impression on the squad.

They now possess a tangible reference point for what “world-class” looks and feels like.

Taipei confirmed a principle we have long held early, high-intensity exposure, free from the distortion of medal pressure, is one of the fastest ways to build a competitive international team.

The real work for Shanghai 2026 begins now, but it begins from a markedly stronger position than it would have a fortnight ago.

AFE NSW Wyong and surrounding campuses have turbocharged their automotive training with the generous donation of eight Hyundai cars boosting students access to cutting-edge technology.

TAFE NSW Automotive Teacher Chris Isaac said the cars, known as preproduction models, would likely have been destined for destruction.

“Now, thanks to this donation these cars have been repurposed to provide hands-on learning for TAFE NSW automotive students in a rapidly evolving industry,” he said.

“These cars are like gold to us, giving our students real-world experience with the kind of technology they’ll encounter in their careers.”

Mr Isaac said the automotive industry is changing fast with automotive technology evolving more in the past decade than in the previous fifty years. “This donation of new cars helps keep our training ahead of the curve,” Mr Isaac said.

Now is a good time to start a career in automotive repair, with the latest data from Jobs and Skills Australia showing there is a national shortage of motor mechanics.

Solidifying skills and boosting confidence Jack has thoroughly enjoyed his WorldSkills journey so far, but it’s quite easy to pick his proudest moment. “It was when I won the National Championships in Brisbane,” he smiled.

“Professionally, the competition has taught me I can excel in my career. It’s specifically helped me manage my time and work more efficiently. Personally, it’s given me confidence and belief in my skills and abilities.”

Upon hearing of his 2026 Skillaroos Training Squad selection, Jack says he was equal parts shocked and happy. He credits his employer, Grant Browan, for much of his success.

Key incentive changes

Industry bodies weather 2026 changes to apprentice programs

C

hanges to the Federal Government’s key apprenticeships incentives has been met with some optimism, but largely concern for its impact on the skills shortage.

From January 1 2026, both the Priority Hiring Incentive and the Australian Apprentice Training Support Payment will drop from $5,000 to $2,500.

However, the $5,000 apprenticeship incentive will remain in place for electric vehicle technicians until December 2026, according to the MTA NSW.

What the MTA NSW has said “While we appreciate the government’s commitment to supporting the electric 26

vehicle transition, we’re deeply concerned about reducing support for the rest of the automotive sector,” MTA NSW CEO Stavros Yallouridis said.

“This $2,500 reduction will act as a handbrake on small businesses looking to take on apprentices in a tight economic environment.

“For many of our members, that difference is decisive in whether they can afford to invest in training the next generation.”

“Without adequate apprentice numbers, we cannot maintain the productivity growth our sector and the broader economy desperately need,” he added.

“Fewer apprentices means reduced productivity, longer wait times for consumers, and higher costs for vehicle servicing and repairs.

“Every freight truck, regional service van, and family car depends on this workforce.

Without qualified technicians, the costs flow to everyone through higher repair times, business downtime, and reduced freight efficiency.”

“We need a balanced approach that recognises both today’s automotive industry and the transition ahead. Our members are committed to training Australia’s future workforce, but they need consistent policy settings and adequate support to make that possible.”

Australia faces a shortfall of about 30,000 skilled mechanic and technician roles, according to MTAA data.

What Apprenticeships Are Us Ltd (ARU) has said “Automotive trades are already on the Government’s own National Skills Needs List, yet the very incentives designed to attract and retain apprentices in these critically short trades are now being cut in half,” ARU Managing Director Michael Wentworth said.

“It is a policy contradiction that cannot be justified.”

“The Government is actively calling for skilled migrant mechanics because our local workforce cannot meet demand.

Yet at the same time, it is withdrawing the incentives needed to train mechanics locally. It makes no sense, and it places

• Australia faces 30,000+ unfilled mechanic and automotive technician roles • Apprenticeship and trainee numbers fell 8.3 per cent in the past year • Automotive apprenticeship commencements are in long-term decline • Workshops report job vacancy periods extending six to nine months

The consequences are widespread and growing: • Higher vehicle repair wait times • Increased insurance costs due to longer downtime • Higher operating costs for SMEs and fleet operators • Reduced productivity for transport, delivery, trades and emergency services

Not only is the skills shortage an issue, but helping businesses financially to be able to support apprentice training is equally crucial to address.

• Immediately halt the January 2026 incentive cuts • Conduct an urgent independent review of the KAP model • Extend equal support to all trades listed on the National Skills Needs List • Develop a national apprenticeship strategy that prioritises evidence over politics

Major shortage

Apprenticeship incentives are often the difference between being able to afford to train someone or not.

W

hen the Federal Government recently released its updated Skills Priority List, it confirmed what many in the automotive industry have known for years: Australia faces a critical shortage of qualified technicians.

Numerous automotive occupations featured prominently on that list, reflecting the urgent need for skilled workers across the sector.

So, it is particularly difficult to understand why, just a short time later, the same government has decided to halve the financial incentives that help employers take on apprentices in these very same identified shortage occupations.

From 1 January 2026, the Priority Hiring

Incentive will drop from $5,000 to $2,500, whilst the Australian Apprentice Training Support Payment will similarly be reduced from $5,000 to $2,500.

This represents a significant reduction in support at precisely the time when we need to be encouraging more young Australians into automotive trades.

The government acknowledges we have a skills shortage.

The government knows which occupations are affected. Yet the policy response is to reduce the support available to address it.

The contradiction is stark.

For automotive employers, particularly small and medium-sized businesses operating on modest margins, apprenticeship incentives are not simply a bonus – they are often the difference between being able to afford to train someone or not.

Taking on an apprentice requires substantial investment: wages, supervision time, training resources, and the productivity loss that comes with teaching someone new to the trade.

Many of our members have been blindsided by this decision.

They have planned their 2026 workforce strategies based on existing support structures, and this sudden change undermines their capacity to follow through on training commitments.

More concerning still is the impact on young Australians leaving school this year, who will now find fewer opportunities available in an industry that should be expanding its workforce, not contracting it.

Needed spark The government has chosen to maintain the Key Apprenticeship Program incentive for clean energy trades, and whilst we support the transition to cleaner vehicles, the policy creates an imbalance that does not reflect market reality.

Electric vehicles currently account for around 10 per cent of new car sales in Australia. Most vehicles on our roads today – and for years to come – are conventional petrol and diesel models requiring traditional automotive skills.

By maintaining higher incentives exclusively for clean energy apprenticeships whilst cutting support for conventional automotive trades, the government is betting on a future workforce whilst ignoring present-day needs.

The result will be longer wait times for vehicle servicing, delayed repairs, and ultimately higher costs for Australian motorists as the skills shortage deepens.

This is not just an industry problem – it is a consumer problem.

When workshops cannot find qualified technicians, every Australian who relies on their vehicle for work, family commitments, or daily life feels the impact.

OPINION: Cutting apprenticeship support during a skills crisis defies logic

Reducing apprenticeship support during an acknowledged skills shortage is a false economy that will cost the community far more in the long run.

Injecting support

Australia’s skills shortage in the automotive repair space trickles down to everyday motorists.

The automotive sector is ready to play its part in building Australia’s workforce. We simply need government policy that enables us to do so effectively.

Cutting incentives while simultaneously acknowledging critical skills shortages sends the wrong message entirely and

will have consequences that extend well beyond our industry.

The government still has time to reconsider this decision. For the sake of Australian employers, young people seeking careers, and motorists across the country, we hope they will.

The VACC and the state motor trade associations have invested heavily in promoting automotive careers and demonstrating to young Australians that the industry offers strong employment prospects and diverse specialisation options. We have worked to show that automotive trades provide secure, wellpaid careers with genuine advancement opportunities. Our members have stepped up, ready to train the next generation.

But goodwill and promotional campaigns can only achieve so much when the policy settings work against us.

We are not asking for preferential treatment.

We are asking for policy consistency that recognises the skills Australia needs right now, not just the skills we might need in a decade’s time.

We are asking for support structures that align with the government’s own skills shortage analysis.

MTA WA welcomes Neil Le Febvre as new Group CEO

he Motor Trade Association of Western Australia (MTA WA) has entered a significant new chapter with the appointment of Neil Le Febvre as its new Group CEO, a move that positions the organisation to navigate the rapid technological, economic and workforce changes transforming the automotive sector.

Mr Le Febvre, who officially undertook the role in December 2025, arrived with more than 30 years of leadership experience spanning multiple industries and continents.

You may view the Middle East as a wealthy playground dripping in oil money, outrageous consumerism and locals showboating their mega-yachts, private jets, racehorses and gold toilets… and in some instances, you’d be spot on.

Many locals here have the kind of disposable only Australian mining magnates dream about (have you seen Clive Palmer’s hundreds-strong car collection by the way?), but that doesn’t mean those in these sand-kissed kingdoms aren’t utter revhead enthusiasts speaking the same car language as us.

They can just indulge their passion a bit more thoroughly.

And expensively.

It’s why the largest annual car show in the Middle East isn’t an “all marques welcome” event where you’ll see old Fords, Toyotas and Austins mixing it with pricier exotica. No, biggest of all is dedicated to just one marque: Porsche.

Porsche celebrated 60 years of its 911 Targa model under the steamy Dubai night sky.

The German sportscar brand (arguably “SUV brand” these days) strikes at the heart of exactly the kinds of cars locals in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and more are after. They’re luxurious, fast, dynamic, beautiful to look at and usually cost bucketloads of dollars.

The Middle East is the right place to flaunt your gold, and there’s few better ways than with the paint on an immaculate air-cooled 911.

Special editions, one-offs, endless cost options and bespoke customer-is-alwaysright special requests all appeal to the cashed-up locals here. And let’s remember, in the Middle East, flaunting one’s wealth is positively encouraged.

The Dubai show is called Icons of Porsche, and this year was its fifth and largest edition yet. Over 1000 Porsches were displayed, some 30,000 spectators visited, and Porsche chose the event to globally reveal two new models: the all-new Cayenne Electric and latest 911 Turbo S. New cars are one thing, but Dubai locals know classic Porsche rarities are the true show-stoppers. The types of cars that invariably climb in value, are the envy of collectors around the world, and are the reserve of the hyper wealthy able to

maintain, repair and insure these vehicles often worth millions of dollars.

Take the Porsche Carrera GT. It celebrated 25 years at Icons of Porsche, this V10 supercar having a reputation for mega performance but spiky handling at the limit. This adds to the myth of this sleek, impossibly low two door, and hence if you were to find one on sale in Australia, reckon on needing around $2 million to secure it.

Collectors items Sixteen examples were on show in a Paristhemed display area, giving a nod to where it debuted a quarter of a century ago. And fair play to the collectors; they know to properly stand out you don’t pick a silver or black colour. Far showier was a burnt orange Carrera GT on Qatar plates, while a

Dubai local outdid them all with a metallic brown effort.

Travelling further back in time, Porsche was celebrating 60 years of its 911 Targa model – those being the ones with removable hard top panels. And in true Middle East style, a glittering classic gold example had centre stage.

In Targa Town, we also spotted one of the strangest collabs you’ll ever see. A 2025 911 Targa with a giant Labubu character sitting in the driver’s seat.

For those not currently blessed with family members under the age of 10, a Labubu is a Monsters character designed

by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung. So profitable are these little suckers, Lung could no doubt afford himself a fleet of Porsches as a result.

When an ordinary 911 GT3 isn’t enough, our Middle East friends are ideal customers for the more striking and aerodynamic Manthey kit.

Far more interesting for we grown-ups were the motorsport Porsches shown.

Locals provided some of the racers, but so important is this Middle East market to the German brand, they shipped in several mega-value offerings from the Porsche Museum.

That included a 1986 Paris-Dakar 959, still bearing its desert-crossing battle scars, cigarette sponsorship (didn’t they just do it better back then?), raised ground clearance and all-terrain tyres. This was a car not for polishing, but for showing off the dents and scrapes of proper competition.

A 1980s Le Mans-type 962C sat beside the latest 911 GT3 Cup sportscar, but highlight (for this attendee anyway) was a 917/30 Spyder used in North America’s Can-Am race series. This formula was basically “anything goes” so the cars were absolutely off the charts in terms of numbers and performance.

Despite being over half a century old,

this 1972-built 917/30 could hit 100km/h in around two seconds, and on to almost 400km/h thanks to its 1100kW 5.4-litre twin-turbo flat-12-cylinder engine, buried beneath wildly aerodynamic bodywork.

Juiced This fan favourite was presented in fluorobright Vaillant sponsor colours from 1975, then placed alongside a modern Porsche Taycan Turbo S EV with the same livery.

Some lucky chap fired up the 12-cylinder, rather embarrassing the silent electric Porsche. There really is no substitute for a smoking, barking and raucous petrol sucker.

Even rarer was the madly aerodynamic one-off 963 RSP, street-legal on French licence plates. This was a tribute vehicle to the only road-going Porsche 917 of over 50 years ago, proving that with some clever rule-bending, true race cars can become street toys. Albeit uncomfortable and impractical ones.

Along those lines, also shown was a 911 GT1 Strassenversion, one of only around 20 made in the late 1990s. Proving only sheikhs need apply, you’d need around $20 million to secure one of these, should one come up for sale.

Porsche’s current Taycan EV gets dressed in the same livery as the 1970s 917/30 Spyder 12-cylinder twin-turbo race car. Guess which sounds better?

Hosted waterfront at Dubai’s Design District, and with the kingdom’s mighty skyscrapers serving as backdrop as the sun dropped, the lines of Porsches of all vintages was like a colourful fantasy land of exotica.

But beyond all this shimmering glitz, it’s a country surrounded by deserts and dunes, and people need vehicles to suit. Which is why the show presented the eye-popping Camp Cayenne.

Luxury bazaar While we Aussies put lift-kits and all-terrain rubber on our Ford Rangers and Nissan Patrols, here they choose luxury for their desert duellers.

Of the dozens of tricked-up 4x4 offerings, most were the giant Cayenne SUVs, often with knobbly tyres extended way beyond the bodywork. But even more impressive were those with madly modified sand duneready 911s and Caymans. Modern-day beach buggy replacement? If you’ve got the dollars, then why not?

Speaking of Cayennes, the new fully electric version was presented in its flagship Turbo guise. It’s hard to believe, but this battery-powered lump weighing over 2.6 tonnes is the most powerful production Porsche road car ever. When you look back over the brand’s performance backcatalogue, it’s weird to think a five-door, five-seat family SUV holds this honour.

Its numbers are mind-bending. There’s 850kW and 1500Nm from its electric motors, and with all-wheel-drive and very hard-working fat tyres, it’s able to hit 100km/h in only 2.5-seconds – same as a 911 Turbo S. The new Cayenne EV also somehow manages to have towing capacity of 3500km, but expect its 623km range to be cut in half. If you’re interested, this car lands in Australia next year priced from $259,900.

Going back in time, there were a few superbly restored examples of Porsche 356s from the 1950s and 1960s – this being the sportscar that started it all for the brand. They were joined by classic 911s, which despite some being up to 60 years old, still have design cues spotted in the very latest versions of today.

But Porsche’s business has changed over the decades, including courting the lucrative Middle East market. So it was of no surprise to see how popular the Porsche Sonderwunsch, or “special request” area was.

It’s here where you can pick from an endless number of colours, trims and options, or make up your own to ensure your Porsche is absolutely unique. It’s the kind of thing that goes down very well here.

e need you to try and break it.”

Can you imagine, as an engineer, being given such an instruction from Ford’s head office in Michigan?

Yet this was the order to Ford Australia’s engineering team, tasked with developing the new Ford Ranger Super Duty.

After all, “Super Duty” has only previously been applied to hulking American pickups like the F-250, F-350 and F-450 which feature a heavy-duty chassis and mega payload and towing capacities.

You know, proper work trucks.

“Some of the testing is almost abusive,” said Rob Hugo, who works for Ford Australia in the department for “Product Excellence and Human Factors.”

Basically, Rob’s the voice of the customer in the engineering team. He’ll evaluate anything from cabin controls and layout, to how a vehicle tows, off-roads and wades deep water.

“This is probably the most fun programme we’ve ever had,” Rob said.

“There’s every excuse in the world to go out and test these cars and push them hard. We’re so lucky they (Ford USA) gave us the Super Duty name, and that’s because they trust us to test it to breaking point.”

Ranger hits the gym So what is this new Ranger Super Duty? It’s Aussie-developed, Thailand-built, has the same footprint as a normal Ford Ranger, but has taken a course of steroids and pumped hard at the gym. There’s 4500kg towing, 4500kg GVM and 8000kg GCM, while payload is up to 1982kg.

It exists to fulfill true hardcore work and lifestyle duties.

Think Outback residents, cattle stations, rural worksites, mega farms and mining work.

If a vehicle goes off-service (breaks down) out here, the work day is shot.

At worst, if the vehicle refuses to proceed in this harsh land, the driver and occupants could be in real trouble.

That’s why Toyota’s LandCruiser 70 Series is weapon of choice in such wild environments, especially the 79 Series pickup. It’s a model that’s barely changed since

its 1984 introduction, because that’s how many folk like it.

Uncomplicated but very dependable.

The new Ranger Super Duty wants a slice of the action (Toyota sold over 11,000 79 Series last year, each from around $80,000 on the road), and Ford knows it must get the durability, reliability and capability absolutely right.

Those of you mechanics who’ve worked on Fords will know the Ranger and Everest’s 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel has had its reliability issues, as has its ten-speed auto gearbox. With Ranger being Australia’s best-selling vehicle, there’s plenty of them on the road and in workshops.

But Ford Australia believes its Lion V6 is the right fit for Super Duty, and has tested it exhaustively in extreme situations, and made changes to suit the application.

It retains a normal Ranger V6’s chunky 600Nm, but power is down from 184kW to 154kW. That’s due to unique engine and transmission calibrations better suited for extreme work, and to meet stricter Heavy Duty Euro6 emissions requirements.

Underneath, it’s all-change.

Only six per cent of a normal Ranger’s frame remains, with all else upping the muscle. Front and rear diff locks are larger for durability and to handle greater loads.

The driveshafts, CV joints, control arms, suspension

mounting points, engine mounts, box mount brackets, radiator fan, underbody protection, front and rear recovery hooks, side steps and more are either larger or reinforced.

There’s an abundance of bash plates and a steel front-mounted bumper, while wheels are eight-bolt 18-inch steelies, able to be bashed back into shape after taking hits.

Standard fit are General Grabber 33-inch allterrain tyres, helping ground clearance up to 299mm and wading depth of 850mm.

Tough mudder The engineering completed, it was time for fun field testing. Smashing a tough-as-nails ute around a 4x4 proving ground sounds a dream job to many, but it absolutely serves a purpose.

“By pushing them like this, then you can make a decision,” Rob explained.

“Was that a realistic thing a customer would do? And if we think it’s something that could really happen, let’s fix it before it gets to the customer.”

One of the biggest enemies during harsh off-roading is mud. Rob and his team added between 600-700kg of the stuff to the Super Duty’s underside during testing. Ever wondered how? “By driving it through very thick, heavy, damaging mud,” he explained.

Obvious, I suppose.

It’s important work. “With that amount of mud, there’s the payload you’ve lost,” Rob said. “You may be running at what you think is GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass), then all of a sudden you’re 600kg over.”

Some technology to remedy this is Ford’s smart onboard scales.

FEATURE STORY This safety feature uses sensors mounted to the suspension located at the wheels to provide a payload weight estimate. It’s shown via the cabin’s screen, where it estimates (very accurately, it seems) how close you’re getting to maximum payload… and if you must stop to clean off some of that heavy mud.

“A secondary issue with mud is you’ve got all that weight hanging on harnesses, connectors and wheel arch liners,” Rob said.

“If it gets into the engine bay it can start getting into bearings, alternators and parts we must protect. It can overheat things, get into components and start prematurely wearing them down, or into your brakes and wheel sensors.”

Rob has helped test the Ranger Super Duty to breaking point and beyond over mud, rocks, desert and road.

Desert duellers Rob’s partner in extreme road-testing crime is Tim Postgate. He’s a true enthusiast offroader and veteran of the UK Camel Trophy off-road expedition team in the 1990s.

“When I’m not on a work trip, I’m off as much as my wife will let me in my own fourwheel-drives,” he said.

Tim also suggested Ford’s Super Duty project has been career high point, with numerous memorable, hardcore and lengthy tests across Australia.

If you’re currently working at a dealer’s service workshop without much fresh air or light, prepare to go green with envy at Tim’s day job.

“We went into the Victorian High Country, and weighed the Super Dutys up to their 4.5-tonne GVM, so the steep hills and descents are going to be a potential challenge,” he explained.

Tim’s mission (he gets paid for this, remember) was to tackle the Billy Goats Bluff Track, Blue Rag Range Track, and the South Basalt Knob Track: bucket-list stuff for hardcore off-roaders.

“That’s a lot of weight to go safely down there,” he explained.

“We also took cars over to South Australia for the sand dunes. A four-and-ahalf tonne (GVM) vehicle in sand, especially on the beach, can be a bit of a challenge to say the least,” They also tested deeply inland – real Outback stuff.

“We drove from our secret proving ground location up to Birdsville, using all the highspeed gravel roads,” he said, by this stage smiling and acknowledging how excellent this sounds.

“Then into the desert, across the sand dunes for 600 kilometres. We’re living out of the vehicles. We’re camping overnight, campfire, cooking out of the side of the vehicles, and just living the way tourists would.”

Tim made a point of saying they made it across the Simpson Desert on a single fill of diesel in the Super Duty’s 130L long range 42

Only one engine is available: Ford’s 3.0L V6 offering only 154kW, but chunky 600Nm of torque. tank. “In all it was about a 5500km trip for four vehicles. We really wanted to prove this tough truck can do the tough tasks in the real world, and all the unexpected things that entails.”

Burn the trailer!

Tow testing was no less extreme. “It has a 4.5 tonne towing capability, so we went and purchased a 4.5 tonne trailer,” said Rob. “When towing we loaded the car up to GCM (8000kg), then did city driving, freeway driving and when it got to 40C, we found some of the steepest grades we could to

test the cooling system.

“When we go on these trips, we take the calibration team with us: engine calibration, transmission calibration and driveline calibrators so they can monitor the performance.”

How did the big trailer fare after all this torture testing?

“It turned out to be a sacrificial trailer because the Super Dutys lasted longer than it managed… we’re going to burn and bury it soon,” Rob said with a big grin.

Such exhaustive testing is exactly what this new Ranger Super Duty demands, as

What does an EDPS do?

EDPS play a vital role in helping modern engines run efficiently.

These sensors supply the engine control unit (ECU) with precise readings on exhaust pressures and the diesel particulate filter (DPF) fill level.

NTK’s lineup includes Differential Pressure Sensors (DPS), Exhaust Pressure

Sensors (EPS) and High-Pressure Sensors (HPS), giving workshops broad vehicle coverage.

Each sensor type can be fitted in multiple locations depending on vehicle design.

• DPS measure the pressure difference between two points in the exhaust flow.

They can be positioned before or after the DPF, catalyst, turbocharger or EGR cooler.

In one position, the DPS helps control lowpressure gas recirculation; in the other, it monitors DPF performance and reports its load status back to the ECU. • EPS read exhaust pressure and relay it to the ECU. These units may be mounted before the DPF, before the turbocharger or after the turbocharger.

• HPS monitor exhaust back pressure to protect key components such as the turbocharger.

They can be installed before the DPF, before or after the turbocharger, or after the EGR cooler.

The ECU uses this data to safeguard the exhaust manifold, prevent back-pressure damage, and accurately manage the EGR flow rate — an important factor in meeting emissions requirements.

The introduction of EDPS rounds out

NTK’s suite of anti-pollution products, reinforcing its long-standing leadership in sensor technology for both OEMs and the aftermarket.

“Modern vehicles require greater efficiency, optimised fuel consumption, and maintained performance while ensuring safety, pollution, reliability and long service life,” James explained.

“All these functions depend on the ECU, which processes inputs from sensors throughout the vehicle.

“Quality sensors are crucial for ensuring that vehicles operate as intended by the manufacturer.”
