It’s show time – already

The 2026 Australasian Bus & Coach Expo is hurtling towards the industry – ABC ’s Expo Showguide has returned to set the scene for the biggest edition of the event yet

When the 2026 Australasian Bus & Coach Expo was announced by BusNSW a couple of years ago, the shift from the traditional late September to early October timeslot to a winter special in July didn’t seem like a major change. However, in the time since, the event has gone from looming on the horizon to being at the forefront of industry discussion at a rapid pace. Now, we’re on the verge of the doors being thrown open at Sydney Showgrounds to take in the widest range of new bus and coach technology in recent times.

Where has the time gone? The industry has completed enough developments to cater for the entirety of 2026, but we’re only nearly halfway through the year. Whether it be a raft of new vehicle releases planned for the July Expo or major breaking news in the operator space, the bus and coach industry has travelled full throttle through 2026 to date, with the BusNSW Expo only offering a temporary pause before the wheels once again turn quickly.

The Expo marks a significant time in the Australasian bus and coach industry’s history. As covered in this special Showguide edition of the magazine, defining news has shaped recent times for the sector, starting with the revelation in May that Victorian family bus giant Dysons is set to be acquired by Kinetic. Whether it was a complete shock or a natural progression for the local bus sector, it still dominated headlines, with Kinetic set to take the reins of Dysons’ legacy that has surpassed 70 years, pending regulatory approval.

Just a week later, Queensland operator Interlink Coaches, better known as Sunstate Charters, announced it has shut its doors as the family bus business hands its New South Wales TrainLink contract over to an incoming operator. These two shockwaves in the operator space means the sector has plenty to process heading to Sydney, with both updates able to be read in more depth in our news section, starting on page eight.

This June Showguide edition of ABC is a jam-packed one, with BusNSW providing a comprehensive guide, from a floormap to exhibitor listings, for the Expo from page 43. Before that we have the ABC tradition of the Show Stoppers section, where we shine a light on the pick of the bunch ahead of the Expo and

what you can expect to see at their show space in more depth. Let me tell you before you flick to page 27, there’s enough new releases and technology updates planned for the two-day event to make your eyes pop out!

For our cover story, there’s also innovation on the cards as our video bus reviewer Paul Aldridge hopped behind the wheel of VDI’s latest Yutong product in the C10. This comfortable coach is redefining the nature of Australasian travel, combining classy components with its trademark smooth driving experience. Another intriguing read is an in-depth look at BCI, with the bus business chatting to ABC about its winding history as it celebrates its 35th anniversary – check it out from page 23.

For all attending the Expo in June, I wish you a productive and exciting few days in Sydney. ABC will be there in full force, covering the industry event for all, and as a sneaky tip, don’t take your eyes off ABC in the coming period as we prepare to unveil something special. I hope

Kinetic set to acquire Victorian giant

The Victorian-based family bus and coach business has revealed it is set to be 100 per cent acquired by a fellow Australian operator

In major news for Australia’s bus and coach industry, long-standing Victorian family operator Dysons has confirmed it has entered into an agreement to be acquired by Kinetic. Under the deal, Kinetic will acquire 100 per cent of the Dysons business. The transaction is currently pending regulatory approval and is expected to be completed in the second half of the year, with Dysons saying its operations will continue as normal.

Dysons says there’ll be no changes to its services, contracts or performance obligations for customers, passengers, contracting authorities or suppliers.

Operating for 73 years, Dysons is one of Australia’s most established bus and coach operators, delivering services across Victoria and New South Wales, including metropolitan, regional, school and charter services. The company employs nearly 1,200 people and operates a fleet of 625 buses and coaches across 12

on supporting the transition to more sustainable public transport, and operate zero-emissions bus services, including under Victoria’s Metropolitan Zero Emissions Bus Franchise (MZF).

The proposed transaction follows a strategic review undertaken by the Dysons Board after securing the MZF franchise in 2025. That review identified the need to strengthen the business’s capacity for long-term investment and growth to remain competitive in a changing public transport environment.

Dysons managing director and CEO Andrew Jakab says the decision had been made following careful consideration.

“This agreement reflects the Board’s view on what is in the best interests of the long-term future of the business and our people,” he says.

“Kinetic brings additional scale and financial capacity that can support continued investment, while

electric buses and electrifying 19 depots since 2020. The company is working with government partners to roll out a fully zero-emissions urban fleet by 2035.

Kinetic Group CEO Michael Sewards says Dyson’s infrastructure and network accelerates progress toward this goal, building on a relationship that spans more than two decades.

“The success of both Kinetic and Dysons has been built on strong values. We share deep commitments to fleet safety and reliability, to valuing our people, and to improving the communities we serve,” he says.

“Together, we’ll deliver the infrastructure and expertise to accelerate zero emissions transport and we look forward to strengthening partnerships with local businesses, governments, schools and community groups across Victoria and New South Wales.

QLD operator closes doors amid contract transition

Having operated for more than four decades, the family business announced it has stepped away from the bus industry

A Queensland based bus and coach operator has announced it has closed its doors and stepped away from the bus industry after its New South Wales TrainLink contract was set to be handed over to incoming businesses.

After 41 years of operating, Brisbane and Gold Coast based Interlink Coaches, known as Sunstate Charters until 2025, closed its doors after the family behind the business confirmed it has stepped away from the sector.

The business was originally founded by Gordon MacNicol and Fred Carah, with Gordon’s grandson Angus Burton assuming the role of general manager in early 2025 after former general manager Lisa Ritchie departed the business.

To modernise the operation and ensure a premium standard of care

for passengers, Burton recruited experienced operator Shaun Gannon and together they executed a strategic restructuring of the business.

The legacy charter division and its dedicated driving team were transitioned to fellow Queensland operator Kangaroo Bus Lines. This allowed Interlink, under a new moniker, to focus its resources exclusively on the execution of the NSW TrainLink contract, which was operating in its fifth year of extension.

With the new round of contracts scheduled to be handed over to incoming operators on July 1, the family made the decision to step away from the industry altogether to pursue other interests.

“Interlink Coaches extends a massive thank you to its driving team

for their years of professionalism and commitment to guest service. Special acknowledgment is given to one outstanding driver who recently surpassed 25 years of continuous service with the company,” the operator told ABC

“The family also extends its profound gratitude to operations managers Kyall Schubert, Colin Christensen, Noel Sadleir and Shaun Gannon. Over the past 10 years, these managers demonstrated exceptional leadership, guiding the TrainLink coaches and staff through extremely difficult working conditions.

“The MacNicol family thanks the industry and the community for 41 years of support and wishes the incoming operators success in the next chapter of the region’s transport network.”

True partners

As the industry continues to evolve its progression towards zero-emissions operations, Foton Mobility Distribution is developing the workforce of tomorrow

The transition to zero emissions doesn’t only begin on the road. It starts in the classroom, the workshop, through training. As an emerging zero-emissions bus and coach force, Foton Mobility Distribution (FMD) is working to understand this better than most, allocating a significant part of its overall strategy to develop the zero-emissions workforce through education on electric and hydrogen vehicles in Australia.

“As electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles move from trials to mainstream fleet adoption, the skill gap in the industry has never been more apparent,” FMD founder and CEO Neil Wang told ABC

“Technicians, fleet managers and operators need specialised knowledge to safely and effectively maintain next-generation vehicles, and FMD has responded with one of the most comprehensive training partnership networks in the country.”

Driving this effort has been a raft of established training partnerships within the industry. In recent times,

WA, creating a genuine national footprint for the development of zero-emissions skills. Wang says these partnerships bring FMD’s expertise into established vocational education frameworks, ensuring that students across the nation are learning based on relevant, real-world platforms instead of outdated curricula.

“The university sector is equally represented through collaborations with Federation University and Deakin University, which positions FMD in the centre of industry and higher education, supporting research-informed approaches to EV technology, fleet electrification strategy, further development of fuel cell technology and sustainable transport systems,” he says.

“For students entering the workforce with engineering, logistics or business qualifications, these partnerships assist in bridging the gap between academic theory and the practical demands of the rapidly evolving industry.”

FMD has also partnered with the Motor Traders’ Association

Below:

extends beyond just bus and coach operators, also flowing into the wider network that supports them.

One of the most forward-looking elements of FMD’s training is its partnership with Kangan Institute, specifically when it comes to hydrogen technology. As hydrogen fuel-cell buses and trucks begin to enter consideration for long-distance and high-demand routes, Wang says equipping technicians with hydrogen-specific safety and servicing competencies is crucial.

“This collaboration positions Australia’s workforce ahead of the curve, rather than scrambling to catch up once the conversation around hydrogen matures,” he says.

“Complementing this is FMD’s commitment to on-site and maintenance training delivered directly to operators. Classroom knowledge is only part of the picture, as technicians need hands-on experience with the specific vehicles in their fleet.

“FMD’s on-site program provides tailored instruction that accounts for the actual operating environment, local conditions and fleet composition of each customer.”

These collective initiatives reflect a deliberate and far-reaching approach to workforce readiness. Wang says FMD is going far beyond simply selling zero-emission vehicles – now the brand is actively investing in the human infrastructure needed to make zero-emission transport viable, safe and sustainable.

“As Australia accelerates its decarbonisation of public transport, the industry will need manufacturers and distributors who are partners in the truest sense,” Wang says.

“FMD’s training network is a strong signal that it intends to be exactly that.”

Meet the fifth generation Inward Gliding door system

Step into the next generation of Inward Gliding doors

At the Australasia Bus & Coach Expo, Ventura Systems unveils its fifth-generation Inward Gliding door system. It introduces a unique approach to door kinematics that improves comfort for both passengers and drivers. At the core is the signature lifting movement: the door leaves lift smoothly to compensate for the inclination of the vehicle floor, then move downward in a controlled motion to close precisely. This creates a tight, durable seal without brushes, deformable rubber, or sliding parts, while keeping out water, dirt, and noise.

Payday super: what you need to know to be ready

Team Super outlines what bus and coach operators need to know before the new super payment rules take effect from July 1 2026

Are you an employer who uses the Small Business Super Clearing House, an employer who pays super at a different frequency to salary or wages or a self-employed person who operates through a company and pays yourself a salary and has to pay the Super Guarantee?

The rules for paying super are changing on July 1, 2026 with the introduction of Payday super. Read on to see what you need to do to be ready for these changes.

Big changes in super are coming Payday Super means super will need to be paid at the same time as salary or wages. This means that super must generally be paid within seven business days (with a few exceptions, such as where you have a new starter). For some employers, adjustments will need to be made to the processes and technologies used to make super payments.

Why are these changes happening?

The aim of these changes is to improve the retirement outcomes of Australian workers. Under the new Payday Super rules, Treasury estimates that around 8.9 million employees will benefit from higher retirement savings from receiving their super contributions earlier and more frequently throughout their working life*. These changes also mean that the ATO can take prompt action where an employee has not been paid super by their employer.

The key changes

1. For Super Guarantee (SG) payments, the new term Qualifying Earnings (QE) will be used to include ordinary time earnings, salary sacrifice contributions and other amounts that are currently included in an employee’s salary or wages for the SG.

2. Employers must report both QE and super liability through Single Touch Payroll (STP).

3. Super must be paid to an employees’ super fund on payday and received by the super fund within seven business days (unless an extended timeframe applies, such as for new employees).

4. The Small Business Super Clearing House (SBSCH) will close at 11.59pm on June 30 2026. Transaction records won’t be available after this time, so employers should make any payments before June 30 2026 and download the documentation they need.

What to do now

Employers must review your cash flow, payroll governance and business processes in preparation for the start date of July 1 2026. If you haven’t prepared yet, there is still time – please review the four steps below.

1. Check your payroll governance processes to ensure that processes are in place to quickly identify any errors so super can be paid within seven business days.

2. If you use the SBSCH, you must make your final quarterly payment before June 30 2026 as this service will switch off at 11.59pm June 30 2026. You will not be able to download employee transaction records from the SBSCH after this time.

3. If you will be using new payroll software to meet the Payday Super requirements, confirm when this will be ready – contact your payroll provider or clearing house if necessary.

4. Familiarise yourself with the new ‘qualifying earnings’ (QE) concept. This is what will be used to calculate the super you must pay your employees.

What if super is paid late?

Under the Payday Super rules, an employer will have to pay a Super Guarantee Charge (SGC) which is calculated and assessed by the ATO.

Sweet spot

Paul Aldridge takes the Yutong C10 for a spin to beautiful Bowral, discovering what makes this uniquely sized model such an enticing option for school, mining and tour operators

The perfect middle ground. It’s an idea made famous by the Goldilocks Principle. When the fable character is tasting the three bowls of porridge, she settles for the one not too hot but not too cold. The ideal balance.

While this may be a long-standing concept, VDI Australia’s recent addition to its growing bus and coach range is a modern representation of the theory. The C10, unveiled to the Australian bus and coach market early last year, finds the sweet spot for operators between ‘more than I need’ and ‘I need more’ in a contemporary coach.

The natural successor to the popular D9, the C10 arrived with a 200kg weight reduction over its predecessor, improving fuel efficiency and overall aerodynamics. Since its release, roughly 60 units

have been sold into the local market, with operators noting the manoeuvrability and versatility of the model as a genuine point of difference.

At 10 metres, the C10 is designed to sit in that space where operators don’t need a full 57-seat coach but want more than a minibus. It’s a mid-coach with a turning circle that lets it access tighter spaces, while still carrying 39 or 43 passengers in comfort. VDI Australia describes it as “one bus with many possibilities”, and having recently put the 43-seat model through its paces on a run to Bowral, south of Sydney, joined by VDI’s national sales manager Sara Clark and business development manager Peter Verbrugge, I can see why.

The first thing that stood out was the take-off speed. Getting onto the freeway via an on-ramp, the C10 reached 100km/h with ease,

Above:

The C10 is a perfect middle ground for many coach operators

and there is genuine power here. Anyone familiar with the broader Yutong range will also appreciate the continuity in the cabin. The dash layout, the LCD screen with its multi-function display and air-conditioning controls, it’s all consistent across the range. I’m told this is a deliberate decision by VDI to keep the driver’s environment uniform, meaning you can step from one Yutong to another without having to relearn anything.

From the driver’s seat, the feature set is impressive. TV monitoring, Wi-Fi controls for passengers, interlock, hazards, school lights and the master switch are all within easy reach. The one thing I’d like to see is the door control positioned on the dash where there’s a spot for it, but that can be a personal preference for the operator. Driver comfort has clearly been a

vrability of a shorter vehicle with an improved turning circle makes a noticeable difference behind the wheel.

Speaking with the VDI team, it’s clear the C10’s versatility is a

Above: Plenty of capabilities at the touch of a finger for drivers

of operators it would suit. For the tourism segment, where smaller group sizes and a more intimate travel experience are increasingly the norm, a 43-seat mid-coach fits the brief without the overheads of a full-sized vehicle. Mining operators benefit from the passenger comfort, spacious layout and reclining seats, alongside a size that can access tighter sites. And for school operators wanting a step up from a minibus without jumping to a large coach, the C10 fills a gap that hasn’t always been well served.

On the safety front, I was pleased to see VDI has maintained its approach of fitting the full Yutong safety suite as standard. The VDI team told me the specification is the “highest in the market”, with features including 360-degree cameras for situational awareness in traffic alongside the advanced driver safety systems that have become standard across the industry. CCTV is also fitted as standard, with operators able to upgrade to additional cameras if required.

Another practical advantage I noticed for this ‘Goldilocks’ bus over

removing the need to connect a trailer to a smaller bus, whether it’s a school excursion or a longer tour.

The little details add up to a premium feel. USB ports on the back of seats, seat storage and a smooth,

There’s a lot to take from this bus. It drives well, it’s built well and it sits in a space in the market that makes sense

Evolving to excel

Over the course of 35 years, BCI has evolved from a Perth-based family bus business to a global supplier of vehicles. At the core of its ongoing success is its ability to adapt to market needs and set trends for the local bus industry

Swan River. Led by entrepreneur and founder Ron Nazzari, the familyrun bus and coach brand forged a reputation within the Australian bus and coach industry by building vehicles from the most isolated major capital city in the world. As the business celebrates 35 years, Ron, as the current chairman, and his growing team have seen BCI evolve from a Perth builder to a globally recognised bus brand.

“We started small with a handful of people and a passion for building better buses,” Ron told ABC

manufacturers, the company’s 35-year journey has been built on hard work, local knowledge and strong family values.”

After founding the business in 1991, Ron also became the Hino dealer in Western Australia shortly after to grow his presence in the local heavy vehicle sector until 1997. Throughout the best part of the ‘90s, BCI became known for its locally produced bus bodies for Australian operators, with a specific focus on designing models specifically for the nation’s driving conditions.

would venture overseas, with BCI starting to manufacture bus bodies in Malaysia before the turn of the century.

It laid the platform for years of evolution and growth, as BCI’s bold move soon paid off. In 2004, BCI manufactured its very first bus chassis to expand its capabilities beyond just bodies. A year later, the brand made a call that shaped the future of Australia’s bus and coach industry when it decided to venture into China to manufacture its buses.

“We were the first brand to bring

Images:

buses to Australia from China,” BCI national sales manager Cameron Millen told ABC

“It was difficult in the early days, but we’ve now been established in China for 20 years, so the hard work has paid off.”

This initial foray into China saw BCI start manufacturing its bus products in Wuxi, near Shanghai along the eastern banks of the country. It had an immediate impact, with BCI able to expand its sales presence to Australia’s eastern seaboard a year later. By 2006, the brand had already swelled far beyond its Perth origins, with a second Chinese factory being established in Nanchang in the country’s central region by 2007.

The mid-to-late 2000s formed a critical period of BCI’s history, as the company continued to grow its presence across the region, including opening its first exports operations to New Zealand in 2008. A first BCI dealership in Sydney followed in 2010, crowning five years of rapid evolution for the family business.

It all came to a head in late 2010 when BCI temporarily paused its production and unveiled its largest shift to date. Through a joint venture with Chinese investor Fengtai, BCI launched its first BCI-owned factory

in China. The purpose-built factory, built in Xiamen, a port city sitting on the south-eastern coast of China, became BCI’s new baby alongside Xiamen Fengtai.

Built on 100,000 square metres of land within Xiamen’s duty free zone, the space’s proximity to the nearby shipping terminal quickly became a drawcard for BCI. The factory went from an idea to a fully-fledged factory in just over six months, with Ron present in early 2011 to officially open the facility in front of 140 Australian and New Zealand bus company representatives.

“Our customers have all said to us they can’t believe what we’ve done,” Ron said at the time.

“A lot of people here have been to Nanchang and a fair few have been to Wuxi to see the three stages of our movements – they’ve seen us grow.”

With the capacity to have more than 100 buses in build at a time, the factory unveiling came hot on the heels of a new dealership opening in Brisbane, bringing BCI closer to realising its national goals.

A year later, BCI solidified its truly international focus, striking a partnership with European based bus and coach OEM Mercedes-Benz to produce a chassis and body

combined solution using BCI’s bodies. In the years that followed, BCI became synonymous with supplying bodies for Mercedes-Benz chassis in the Australasian market. Throw in a 2013 partnership with conglomerate Weichai and a newly opened Adelaide dealership in 2014, as well as a new space in Melbourne a year later, and BCI was a household name

The Mercedes-Benz partnership proved fruitful, with the pair working together locally to produce vehicles until the European brand announced in early 2023 that it would pause the sale of any new products in Australia for the foreseeable future. While it could’ve left BCI in a rut, the brand moved quickly to pivot towards other well-known European businesses as the local body supplier. After being appointed CEO of BCI in 2017 and Ron transitioning to the role of chairman, Desmond Armstrong knew the brand had to continue its path of innovating to find the right solution.

“We’ve evolved from a traditional bodybuilder of our own products as a manufacturer to now partnering with Volvo and Scania to give us more opportunities in the market,” he told ABC

“These partnerships with global OEMs reinforces the notion that we’re an international partner. What we provide to customers are vehicles fit for their needs, including assembling the very best components in the market. We’re an Australian supplier that assembles the best components in the world in an international economic zone in China before completing the vehicles in Australia with local suppliers and content.”

Desmond’s appointment to CEO coincided with BCI also looking across the globe to expand its exports operations, reaching the United Kingdom. After staying afloat during a myriad of global challenges, be it economic or social, he says the recent partnership with Volvo and Scania, formalised in 2023, is evidence of BCI’s constant ability to adapt and thrive.

“Our success comes from our resilience in persisting through economic headwinds and upheavals

Above: Industry partnerships have been critical to BCI’s success

that we’ve seen in recent decades,” he says.

“Throughout this period, we’ve managed to understand how we can change to adapt to customer demands – our ability to do this has been one of BCI’s greatest strengths.

“The market is incredibly different to what it was when Ron first founded BCI in 1991 – it’s a testament to him that we’ve grown the business in all Australian states and increased our staff numbers past 100. It’s been all about diversifying.”

Outside of these industry challenges, Desmond says BCI has spent the past five years tweaking the brand’s perception in the local market. With these major openings of BCI-owned facilities in China has come a misconception of how the business works. BCI has looked to correct these falsehoods in recent years, reiterating that BCI is still a fully Western Australian owned company.

“Another misconception is that we put together only international componentry to create solutions for Australian operators,” he says.

“While our assembly plant is in China, we have had plants in other countries in our history. Many think we’re a Chinese supplier, but that’s incredibly inaccurate. We’re unique in many senses as we’re a multi-national global company that brings the best

Throughout this period, we’ve managed to understand how we can change to adapt to customer demands – our ability to do this has been one of BCI’s greatest strengths

possible coach and bus products to Australia and assemble them with local content in our Australian facilities.”

As the brand begins its 35th anniversary celebrations, Cameron Millen says BCI’s key focus is to strengthen its evolving chassis partnerships with Volvo and Scania to continue producing the best quality vehicles for local operators.

“There’s a lot of new players in the Australasian market, but our focus is on providing a quality product that’s suitable for Australian conditions,” he says.

“To be in business in the local market for 35 years is a wonderful achievement and is a testament to our product. We’ll continue moving to meet market demands and build suitable products.”

Desmond says BCI is also continuing to break records, with last year being the brand’s best in terms of deliveries throughout its 35-year history. To continue growing these numbers, maintaining market share in Australia while looking at global

opportunities, such as in the UK, remain key. When it comes to a local perspective, BCI is looking to grow in the NSW market.

This laser-like focus is emblematic of BCI’s approach to producing quality bus and coach products for Australasian operators. After its humble foundations along the banks of the Swan River, Ron says BCI will continue staying true to its core while reaching for global success.

“We’re still proudly Western Australian-owned and the business has grown into a global operation with manufacturing in China and exports reaching overseas markets while staying focused on designing vehicles that truly suit tough Australian conditions,” he says.

“Constant feedback from operators across the country has helped shape every generation of buses and coaches. What’s made the difference over 35 years is our fantastic clients and employees – experienced managers, skilled staff and a team that genuinely understands the bus industry and our customers’ needs.”

AngelTrax’s destination signs display

Security system supplier AngelTrax is already a well-known name in the industry for its range of technology available to bus and coach operators across the industry. The business is preparing to take this presence to the next level at the Expo as it displays its latest range of destination signs.

“After extensive consultation with bus operators, we’ve designed our destination signs around their feedback, creating a system with an ease of operation that saves valuable time,” AngelTrax Australia’s Douglas Grey told ABC.

“Our system has been specifically designed for the operators and their industry.”

Alongside the latest range of destination signs at AngelTrax’s stand will be its usual array of CCTV and e-mirror products.

BCI’s flexible range

BCI’s presence across the floors of the 2026 Expo will spread well beyond its own stand. In Sydney this year, the bus and coach brand will showcase a wide variety of its latest products while a new launch is being teased on another stand.

“We’ll try to show a bit of everything at our own stand, including a low-entry coach body based on a Volvo chassis and a low-floor city bus on a Scania chassis,” BCI national sales manager Cameron Millen told ABC

“We’ll then also have a little 11-metre coach body on a Scania chassis and a CAT 4 school bus on a Volvo chassis.”

Outside of this, Millen is teasing a special launch on Volvo’s stand, saying it’ll be the “first of its type” in Australia.

“It’s an exciting project that’s been bubbling away for more than a year now,” he says.

“We understand that to succeed we need to partner with our clients and the people that we engineer our products for.”

“We want our customers to leave the Expo knowing we design and make destination signs in Australia as well as our state-of-the-art CCTV camera solutions.”

“I got to see it in the factory just before it left for Australia, and it’s amazing to see.”

On another stand BCI will also lend a Proma eight-metre low-floor model to show hoists, resulting in an array of different BCI buses throughout Sydney Showgrounds.

“On our stand we’ll display four buses in total, continuing on the themes of what we exhibited in Brisbane at the last Expo,” BCI CEO Desmond Armstrong told ABC

“We can’t wait to see the public’s

reaction to our new model that will be unveiled at the Expo.”

Millen says the key message BCI wants attendees to take from the Expo is the variety of applications that BCI can build for. As the brand continues to expand, BCI will look to showcase its unique capabilities in the local market.

“Our diverse product range is key, and we want to show our ability to provide a bespoke solution to suit customer needs,” he says.

BLK’s growing presence

It’s a special time for BLK, as the brand brings its leading range of buses and coaches to the Expo during its 20th anniversary celebrations. The growing Australian vehicle brand is planning to showcase its President range of coaches at the event, including its President 10, President 2 and President 3 models, while a new release is being teased.

“We really want to showcase the fact that BLK is celebrating our 20-year anniversary of supporting bus operators and businesses across Australasia,” BLK sales and special projects manager David Jiear told ABC

“Twenty years is a major milestone for us. Our strength is in our industry-leading five-year warranty and

While Jiear remains tight-lipped about what attendees can expect from BLK’s new release, there’ll be plenty of BLK presence at this year’s Expo. To further celebrate the milestone, BLK is the major sponsor of this year’s BusNSW Expo Gala Dinner to be held after the first day of the event.

When it comes to 2026, Jiear says BLK is predicting a wider range of vehicles outside of simply the latest battery electric bus technology will fill the halls of the Sydney Showgrounds compared to the most recent industry Expo.

“We want to reiterate that BLK is a major provider of buses and coaches in Australasia and, at the same time, we partner with our customers as a flexible manufacturer to ensure their needs are met to the best of our ability,” he says.

“We also want to reinforce that we build our own full CBU vehicles as well as our bus bodies on European chassis

“Our strength lies in our ability to source spare parts for both our own brand and all Chinese bus brands in the market.”

Bus Stop’s strong line-up

For all of Bus Stop Sales’ varied product range that’ll be on display at the Expo, there’ll still be a noticeable star of the show. Alongside trusted vehicles from both King Long and I-BUS (powered by Isuzu) will be a zero-emissions model dominating attention on the brand’s stand.

“The centrepiece is the all-new King Long EVolution city bus – a redesigned 12-metre low-floor electric bus that we believe sets a new benchmark for value and quality in the Australian market,” Bus Stop Sales managing director Pete White told ABC

“Alongside it we’ll have our nine-metre low-floor EV and updated mid-sized diesel bus on display. On the I-BUS side, we’re showcasing Australia’s best-selling 30+ seat mini bus – offering the most seats available

on an LR licence at 32 including the driver.

“Visitors will also get a look at King Long’s redesigned standard seating, which is both innovative and a new customer favourite.”

The King Long EVolution will be the headline as the Expo will be the first time the model has been seen in Australia. White says he’s “really confident” the brand new bus will turn heads at its first major public showing in Australia. Supporting

Challenger’s triple delight

Great things come in threes –Challenger is putting this mantra into practice at the Expo, showcasing a trio of models across both original models with updated specifications and newer designs.

“We’ll be formally introducing our newest model in the three-axle coach – while the vehicle won’t be on display, we’ll be providing detailed information on the specification, design, expected build timeframes and indicative pricing,” owner Greg Sloan told ABC

“This release represents a significant step in expanding our product range to meet growing demand for higher-capacity, long-distance and charter applications.”

Sloan says this vehicle has been developed with real operator requirements in mind, with Challenger set to engage directly with customers

Like many in the industry, Challenger is expecting plenty of zero-emissions products to be on show in Sydney.

The team is predicting a range of conversations will be held about the future of lower-emissions fleets.

Challenger wants the industry to clearly understand what it represents as a brand. The Australian, family-owned manufacturer wants to share how it designs and engineers vehicles

the unveiling will be King Long’s componentry focus as the brand’s proprietary seating demands a close look from operators.

“We’re looking forward to conversations with operators and decision-makers across the full spectrum — from metro fleets looking at electrification through to charter and community transport operators who need the most capable mini bus on an LR licence,” he says.

“I’m excited for visitors to leave knowing that Bus Stop is the one-stop shop for quality electric buses and mini buses in Australia, with King Long delivering world-class EVs at a price point that makes fleet-wide electrification realistic while IBUS is the benchmark for mini-buses on an LR

“Every vehicle is built to our specification, not adapted as an afterthought. Our assembly model allows us to integrate proven, globally recognised components such as Cummins, Allison, Eaton, ZF and other leading OEM suppliers,” Sloan says.

“We stand behind the product from design through to delivery and aftersales support. We focus on delivering a vehicle that is fit for purpose, durable in Australian conditions, and commercially viable over its full lifecycle,” Sloan says.

“Ultimately, we want operators to walk away understanding that a Challenger vehicle is not defined by where components are sourced. It is defined by how the vehicle is engineered, assembled, supported and how it performs over time.”

Charge Hub’s new faces

Ahead of this year’s Expo, the greatest representation of the industry’s ongoing transition to zero-emissions operations will be seen by the infrastructure technology on display. As a bus depot electrification specialist, Charge Hub will be central to this example of how the industry is moving towards more sustainable technology.

Charge Hub’s stand will showcase a range of zero-emissions infrastructure options, with the leading product being a Kempower electric vehicle charger.

“We’ll also have a TV monitor set up showcasing some of the amazing double-decker bus depot conversions we’ve done in the UK,

It won’t just be the latest electric bus charging technology that will be unveiled at the Sydney event. Guy says a new appointment will be part

of Charge Hub’s team by July, with James McCarthy joining the team after previously serving as the zero-emissions bus manager for Transit Systems. While at the Expo, Charge Hub will also showcase its new partner agreement to supply the Kwetta HV connected charger out of New Zealand.

“We can’t wait to see all the faces at the Expo and get exposure to all bus operators that may be looking for a partner to assist with the electrification challenge,” Guy says.

“We want the industry to know that Charge Hub is an experienced long-term electric vehicle charging partner that they can rely on.”

Distinctive Systems’ software expertise

With more than 40 years of industry experience behind it, Distinctive Systems will arrive at this year’s event ready to demonstrate why its software has become a trusted solution for coach, bus and tour operators around the world.

Distinctive Systems Australia

director Alan Williamson says the company’s strength lies in developing comprehensive, practical systems designed specifically for the transport industry.

“Our systems have been shaped by tens of thousands of hours of development and years of direct industry knowledge,” Williamson told ABC

“They are built to give operators the tools they need to manage their businesses with greater efficiency, visibility and control.”

At the show, Distinctive Systems will be demonstrating its key software solutions, including Coach Manager, Tour Booking System and Vehicle Maintenance System. Together, the systems support operators across charter and contract bookings, tour reservations, passenger management, driver workflows, fleet maintenance and workshop activity.

Williamson says the software is designed to suit a wide range of operators, from smaller businesses through to some of the country’s largest and most demanding fleets.

“Simplified, express and limited capacity versions of our systems ensure they remain cost effective for even the smallest of operators,” he says.

Coach Manager offers secure handling of bookings from enquiry through to invoice, including

Foton’s zero-emissions journey

Unlike many that are unveiling certain products at their stand, Foton Mobility Distribution (FMD) is instead planning an interactive experience around the journey to zero-emissions for its Expo stand. The growing brand says visitors will be able to discover four different buses paired with four of its partners to showcase how to relieve the stressors of transition to zeroemissions.

“The aim is that the individual visits each bus, discusses with each partner, stamps a booklet and wins an FMD gift pack,” FMD founder and CEO Neil Wang told ABC

“We’re excited to be showcasing some of the latest additions to our vehicle line-up at the Expo. Visitors to our stand will have the opportunity to see the newest

For tour operators, Tour Booking System helps manage individual passenger reservations, online bookings, payments, confirmations and passenger information, while Vehicle Maintenance System supports defect reporting, inspection planning, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, job cards, history recording and workshop control.

“Ultimately, our goal is to help operators work smarter, reduce manual processes and gain better control across their business,” Williamson says.

visitors are able to leave with a clearer picture of what a practical transition looks like and ideally, leave with the confidence to take the next step,” he says.

Wang says FMD expects to see a shift in conversation from ‘if’ to ‘how’ at the Expo, with more operators set to come to the show with “serious intent and specific questions”.

“We also expect to see more representation from infrastructure and technology providers, which shows just how much the ecosystem has developed around this shift,” he says.

“We want the industry to know that although the switch to zero-emission can seem daunting, with the right partners to help you along the way, it can be a seamless transition.”

Irizar’s innovative future

As it continues to build in the Australian market, bodybuilder Irizar will lift the lid on its leading coach solutions for local operators. A range of product updates will headline its presence at the Expo as Irizar continues innovating.

“Irizar will be showcasing a selection of our latest coach solutions, with a focus on innovation, passenger comfort and the evolving needs of the Australian market,” Irizar Asia Pacific managing director Steve Heanes told ABC

“We’ll have some exciting updates and product developments on display, with more details to be shared closer to the event.”

Heanes says the Expo forms a “great opportunity” to share the latest features of Irizar’s local presence.

“It’s a wonderful chance to connect with operators, partners and industry stakeholders, while showcasing how Irizar continues to support the industry across the region,” he says.

Heanes says he’s expecting another strong event to run this year in Sydney, with a particular focus being on innovation, sustainability and practical solutions for operators across Australia and New Zealand.

“We want visitors to leave with a clear understanding of Irizar’s commitment to quality, reliability and long-term partnership in the region,” Heanes says.

Scania’s suite of releases

New product will be the name of the game for Scania Australia at this year’s Expo, starting with the all-new Super 13 six-cylinder engine, the 14-speed Opticruise gearbox and new axles on a coach chassis. Add in Scania’s latest innovations in the zero-emissions space and the global OEM will have a variety of solutions on offer to check out.

“We’ll also display our fully electric city route bus, one of a large order from South Australia’s Department for Infrastructure and Transport,” Scania Australia head of bus, coach and power solutions

Niklas Walter told ABC

Walter says the Scania Super 13 powertrain and drivetrain is the most significant new model introduction on the stand, promising an eight per cent fuel saving compared to the previous six-cylinder engine.

“We hope to be able to expose our current and new technology to visitors as well as engage in dialogue about how they are

Sege’s new seats

Sege Seats’ display will feature a comprehensive range of solutions, focusing specifically on its latest modular seating platform.

“This includes configurations suited for both route bus and coach applications, demonstrating versatility across different operational requirements,” Sege Seats director Ozcan Kuvanci told ABC

“We’ll also showcase a selection of current products already in service across Australia, highlighting proven performance, durability and compliance with local standards.”

A jewel in Sege’s Expo space will be the official Australasian launch of its next-generation modular seating range. Kuvanci says the new platform has been developed through extensive research and engineering after being introduced globally.

There is an increasing emphasis on solutions that reduce maintenance downtime and improve operational flexibility

He says the Expo will once again be a key event in the calendar, providing Sege with an important platform to strengthen relationships with existing customers while also engaging with new operators and partners.

“As Sege continues to expand its footprint in the Australasian market, we see this as an opportunity to demonstrate not only our latest product innovations, but also the strength of our local operations,” Kuvanci says.

finding the transition to a more sustainable transport environment, and what solutions they are looking for that we can provide from our wide range of options,” he says.

“We have a strong story to tell with our products and services, which include captive finance and insurance, repair and maintenance and genuine Scania replacement parts, but it’s also important to hear what our customers, as well as those not yet our customers, have to say.

“It’s also important to note our longevity in this market and our network of 10 company-owned sales and service branches alongside around 60 authorised independent dealers across Australia. This is a fundamental element in our ability to support our customers’ uptime.”

“We aim to reinforce our position as a long-term partner to the industry.”

The Sege team is expecting the Expo to showcase innovation across the industry, with the seating supplier being central to this evolution.

“There is an increasing emphasis on solutions that reduce maintenance downtime and improve operational flexibility, and we anticipate this trend will be evident,” Kuvanci says.

“At Sege, we have already taken steps in this direction, having introduced seatbelt signage as a standard feature across our seating range from last year.

“We want industry stakeholders to understand Sege’s commitment to delivering high-quality, practical and forward-thinking seating solutions supported by a strong local presence.”

Inside StyleRide’s seating resurgence

Seating supplier StyleRide has continued evolving its processes and product range, with the brand preparing to put its full brand benefits on display at the Expo. Following a steadying year in 2025, StyleRide’s continued growth in 2026 will allow it to showcase its leading seat models and internal capabilities.

“We’ll have a range of our products on view at the Expo this July,” StyleRide Seating Systems national business development manager Troy Wells told ABC

With these exact models remaining a surprise for the industry, StyleRide will ensure its seats that’ll adorn its Expo stand will detail its evolving quality and applications. While at the event, Wells says his team is looking to

discover more industry perspectives on its range as well as the wider market trends.

“We’re excited to talk to as many customers and show the benefits of StyleRide,” he says.

“We’re mainly hoping to showcase our ability to design and produce customer specific designs, while we’ll also invite feedback from all of our customers, both old and new.”

As the brand continues offering more in-house installations and maintenance work to supply and fit spare parts for customers, Wells says StyleRide has worked heard behind the scenes to develop a strong team and continue achieving strong results. This will come to a head in Sydney as StyleRide looks forward to interact with operators and industry associates.

“Being a public event, we may get to meet the end users of our products, so it’s always interesting to receive their feedback,” he says.

“We want the industry to know that StyleRide produces the most comfortable local product available.”

VDI’s full package

It’ll be difficult to miss VDI Australia at the 2026 Expo. At 840sqm, VDI has the largest single stand at the event, but it has veered away from becoming a vehicle yard as it instead focuses on the customer.

“What we’ve focused on for 2026 is giving operators the kind of purchasing experience and through-life product support they’re used to everywhere else in their lives,” VDI Australia national sales manager Sara Clark told ABC

“Operators don’t want to be sold to –they want straight answers and proper support, so the stand is built around a simple idea: find your bus.

“Yutong buses are already operating in every part of the Australian bus industry, from school and community transport to route service, coach and tourism, charter and zero-emission. The stand reflects that. Wherever an

As well as Yutong vehicles spanning seat capacity, floor configuration and drivetrain, the stand will bring VDI’s service, parts, telematics and support teams together in one place, open for business and ready to handle real enquiries on the day.

“Visitors will be able to get hands-on with a set of tools built to make their decisions and their day-to-day operations easier and clearer: a total

Ventura’s visionary unveiling

The opportunity for new releases and unveilings at the Expo isn’t just limited to vehicles – Ventura Systems Australia will also be impressing the crowds with the local debut of a trusted global door system.

The Expo will allow Ventura to showcase its inward gliding ‘lift’ door system in Australia for the first time ahead of its planned local introduction next year following an extensive testing and validation program. Alongside the new technology, Ventura will also present its rapid sliding door system as an alternative to inward gliding technology, with a focus on sealing performance and fast, reliable operation.

“We will also showcase our outward plug sliding door system together with its LED boarding

communication system, designed to improve passenger guidance and flow during boarding and alighting,” Ventura Systems Australia general manager Wolter Meijerhof told ABC

“Alongside the range on display, Ventura Systems will provide updates on a number of development projects, including a second-generation door control unit, further improvements in functional safety and remote monitoring capabilities for door systems.

“The Expo is a valuable moment for us to get feedback on our latest product launches and development projects, and to discuss how we can apply our worldwide experience to the local market.

“We are looking forward to speaking with OEMs and operators about the challenges linked to the

cost of ownership calculator, service scheduling tools and support offerings among them,” she says.

“The thread running through all of it is clarity – helping operators run their buses efficiently, with fewer headaches and a clear view of the real numbers.”

VDI is looking to enjoy quality conversations with operators, particularly around zero-emissions technology.

“We want every operator who visits to feel that the premium in what VDI offers isn’t only in the product – it’s in the service and support wrapped around it,” Clark says.

“2026 is also a milestone year for us as we’ll be marking 2,000 Yutong deliveries in Australia. We want Australian operators to know Yutong genuinely backs them through a close partnership with VDI.”

electrification of public transport, including functional safety, cyber security and bus specifications.”

The Ventura team is expecting this year’s Expo to reflect an industry that’s continuing to develop, particularly around the zero-emissions transition.

“We would like visitors to leave our space with a clearer view of the latest developments in door system technology, the growing importance of functional safety and the role door systems can play in shaping modern urban transport,” he says.

“We also want to show how smarter door solutions can support the bus industry in moving towards newer electric technologies and better vehicle specifications, ultimately helping to improve the passenger experience.”

Volvo’s double delight

The Australian chassis giant will be out in full force at the Expo, presenting two of its latest models to the local bus and coach market. This July, a Volvo B13R on a Marcopolo G8 body and a Volvo BZR Electric on a BCI body will both be on display, representing Volvo’s full capability story from proven diesel performance to zero-emissions electric leadership.

“Our focus at the Expo itself is less about new releases and more about letting the product speak for itself,” Volvo Bus Australia general manager Mitch Peden told ABC.

“The BZR Electric has just landed in Australia, and the Expo is the perfect opportunity for operators to get up close with it – ask questions, kick the tyres and have conversations.”

There’s one word that defines Volvo’s approach to the 2026 Expo –connection. As one of the only times the whole industry packs into one room, Volvo is looking to capitalise on the valuable opportunity by hearing from operators to shape its future.

“We expect a lot of energy around electrification – that conversation isn’t slowing down,” Peden says.

“But we also expect to see the

industry grappling with some real-world realities: the cost of fuel, infrastructure, range, total cost of ownership. These aren’t abstract debates anymore, and we think the Expo will reflect that maturity.”

For the Expo, Peden wants visitors to Volvo’s stand to come away with key messages around Volvo’s range being built for Australian conditions and backed by Volvo’s global safety and engineering credentials.

“Volvo Bus Australia isn’t just here to show a bus – we’re here to be a long-term partner,” he says.

“Whether you’re running diesel today or planning your first electric order, we want to have a real conversation about what works for your operation.”

Wrightbus’ local celebrations

It’s a special time for global bus and coach OEM Wrightbus, with the brand celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2026 with a local return to the Bus & Coach Expo.

The global zero-emissions bus technology supplier arrives in Sydney with a bold ambition to unite UK and Australian partners with a range of products, services and solutions to manage the transition from diesel to zero-emissions buses.

“We’ll be showcasing the features and benefits of the three vehicles we’ll be introducing into the Australian market,” Wrightbus Australia and New Zealand head of sales Julian Gurney told ABC

“This includes the single-deck Kite BEV, the single-deck Kite FCEV and the double-deck Streetdeck 6x2, as well as underlining 80 years of heritage.”

We want people to understand that while we’ve cut our teeth in the UK and Europe, we have a global vision

At the same time, Daniel Castro, Wrightbus managing director Asia-Pacific, says Wrightbus is working on Gen 3.0 of both of its battery electric and hydrogen fuel-cell buses, as well as a hydrogen coach that’s expected to be ready for market in 2027.

As Wrightbus celebrates the 80th anniversary milestone, Castro says the brand is “really keen” to learn more about the local industry and the role Wrightbus can play in supporting

Zhongtong’s grand return

The 2026 Expo will be a special one for ZBus, with the brand officially marking its return to the Australasian market. Several years after departing from the region, Zhongtong is back with the latest manufacturing technology, including a range of bus and coach models for operators.

The Expo will see ZBus display its L7, L8, H12 and H12H models alongside a secret unveiling that the evolving ZBus team is teasing.

“At the Expo we’ll be showing a range of vehicles, starting with our 7.3m L7 26-seat diesel model, which is a new bus to Australia,” ZBus national corporate sales manager Glenn Davidson told ABC

“We’ll then have our L8 8.5m plug-in hybrid that’s a great little

school bus for city routes, as well as our 57-seat Cummins diesel H12 in high spec and our hybrid H12.”

In ZBus’s fast- growing fleet for Australasia, Davidson says more sustainable systems will be showcased as part of the release of Zhongtong’s N12 at the Sydney Showgrounds.

“The N12 is a full- electric low-floor model, available in 350 to 460+ kWh configurations, engineered specifically for Australian

domestic operators.

“As always from the Expo, we’re expecting to see a lot of innovation and market developments, while our team on the ground is looking forward to meeting up with colleagues and contacts old and new,” he told ABC

Castro is hoping to be able to use the time spent at the Expo to impart upon the industry the depth of experience that the Wrightbus team has developed.

“We want people to understand that while we’ve cut our teeth in the UK and Europe, we have a global vision and, Australia and New Zealand are key cornerstones of that expansion,” he says.

“We want visitors to book a demo and see how our products perform for themselves.”

conditions,” Davidson says.

As it marks ZBus’ first Expo in Australasia since officially returning to the local market, Davidson has high expectations of the impact the brand will have at the event. He wants to highlight the brand is back in Australia “with a vengeance”, generating interest and awareness by displaying its product quality and technology as standard features.

“We can’t wait to let the industry and customers know that they now have a better alternative available locally from the second largest bus and coach manufacturer in the world,” Davidson says.

“To keep it simple, we want to make the market aware that we’re back.”

ZF’s leading tech

The Expo is often a time for the cream of the crop to be displayed, and this is no different for ZF. The global technology company’s stand will be dominated by its popular Bus Connect telematics program developed specifically to suit bus operators alongside various other systems designed to impress the local market.

“The Bus Connect platform offers advanced insights into the performance characteristics for electric buses and diagnostic capabilities for ZF transmissions used in diesel buses – and we will be providing Bus Connect demonstrations at our stand,” ZF’s head of sales – CV AM & OE trailer Damon Baffico told ABC

“We’ll also be showing Bus Configurator – an application that demonstrates the latest features and benefits of ZF’s current range and future product developments available to bus OEMS and operators. The app will allow visitors to the stand to build their own customised virtual vehicle using the latest technology available from ZF.

“We’ll also then have the ZF Aftermarket product portfolio digital application available on a touchscreen.”

The ZF team is looking forward to connecting with industry peers and strengthening relationships with customers and suppliers while gaining insights into the latest trends in the local industry.

Baffico says ZF expects the event to showcase a “comprehensive range of leading technologies” alongside new innovations and forward-thinking solutions to highlight the growth and resilience of the sector.

“Technology and EV take up in the bus market is advancing at a rapid rate. At the Expo, ZF is seeking to demonstrate to the local industry its capability to maintain pace with these developments and enable operators in Australia access to these latest technologies,” he says.

“We are expecting to see advancing technologies demonstrated by exhibitors across the show.”

Local benefits

As the Expo approaches, Custom Denning is set to make a powerful statement about what sovereign manufacturing can deliver for Australia’s electric vehicle transition and the communities that depend on it

There’s a moment in every industry’s evolution when the question of where things are made stops being purely an economic consideration and becomes a strategic one. For Australia’s bus and coach sector, that moment may be now.

Headquartered in Australia and proudly Australian Made Certified and ISO 9001 accredited, vehicle manufacturer Custom Denning is planning on arriving at the Australasian Bus and Coach Expo with a clear message – local design, local engineering and local manufacturing aren’t nostalgia, they’re Australia’s competitive edge.

“With more than 70 per cent local content – a figure unmatched by any competitor in the Australian market – Custom Denning converts raw materials into finished bus components on home soil,” Custom Denning national sales manager Mick Neskes told ABC

“That process encompasses skilled local engineering, advanced manufacturing technologies and the development of genuinely Australian

intellectual property that can be adapted and refined for specific operational requirements.

“When a route changes, a fleet specification evolves or an operator encounters a real-world challenge that no import can solve, Custom Denning has the agility to respond because the engineers, tooling and decision-makers are all here.”

This local ownership extends beyond the factory gate, with Custom Denning’s commitment to whole-of-life aftersales support meaning operators are never left navigating a time zone difference or a language barrier when a bus needs attention. Training, technical support and parts are delivered within Australia by Australians who understand Australian conditions. That includes comprehensive whole-of-life training programs for operators and technicians and the upskilling of maintenance personnel on high-voltage systems, creating a capability gap that Neskes says Australia’s bus industry “cannot afford to leave to chance” as electrification accelerates.

“Manufacturing is never just about the product. Every Custom Denning bus that rolls off the production floor represents dozens of jobs in engineering, fabrication, electrical installation, quality assurance and logistics,” he says.

“The company actively creates apprenticeships across all facets of bus manufacturing, building a pipeline of trade-qualified workers with skills that are genuinely transferable across Australia’s broader advanced manufacturing sector.”

When a government or operator chooses a Custom Denning bus, Neskes says they’re doing more than simply buying a vehicle – they’re also investing in an ecosystem.

“Whether you’re an operator weighing up your next fleet procurement, a government agency developing a zero-emission bus strategy or simply someone who believes that Australia should be building its own future, come and have a conversation at the Expo,” Neskes says.

WINNER

Perfect paddock

The Best Bus winner for June heads back out into the countryside courtesy of Alston Coaches and a Volvo and Irizar coach

As the weather begins to get frosty and winter is well and truly taking hold in Australia and New Zealand, there’s nothing quite like an escape to the countryside. The clear, snappy mornings. The mystical fog. As the sun breaks through, a magical light that makes Australasia’s natural landscapes shimmer.

After a jam-packed bus underneath one of Australia’s most popular landmarks took home the May edition of Best Bus, the ABC Best Bus winner for June takes us back to the heart of Australia – the countryside.

The Best Bus June winner comes courtesy of Walid Jesly from Alston Coaches, who worked with driver Joon to take the winning shot of an Alston coach in regional Victoria.

Walid says the Volvo Irizar i6s

B8R was an obvious candidate for a stunning photo near a regional Victorian landmark.

“This photo was captured during a tour with inbound group travelling from Adelaide to Melbourne, near the tranquil Lake Corangamite nature reserve in Alvie. It was one of those moments where Victoria’s natural charm really shows,” Walid told ABC

“Our coach driver Joon is not only dedicated to ensuring guests feel welcomed but also a great photographer who enjoys capturing the places he visits. He framed this scene beautifully.

“At Alston, we deeply value Victorian tourism, and moments like this remind us how special it is to share the state’s landscapes, stories and warm hospitality with visitors from around the world.”

It was a busy month of entries, with Walid and Joon’s photo beating a heavy field of strong photos. Notable finalists deserving mention include Geoff and Sandra Jacob for a wonderful capture of a Blue Bus Tours coach in full flight, Grady Weatherley-Connell’s up close and personal snap of the victorious Auckland A-League team on an open top bus and Kathy Vecchi from Broadway Travel & Tours.

As the winner of Best Bus June, Walid received a free 12-month subscription to ABC magazine, while the winning photo is also being shown off as ABC ’s Facebook cover photo for the whole of the month.

Don’t forget to send through your Best Bus photos for July and throughout 2026 via email and keep an eye on our Facebook page for more details!.

Pushing forward

The

bus and coach industry is continuing its momentum throughout the middle of the year as deliveries remain high

The industry is well and truly motoring when it comes to delivering buses and coaches, with consistent numbers emerging throughout 2026. The latest Australian bus and coach deliveries data, courtesy of ABC, recorded 153 units for May 2026. While it’s both slightly lower than the 158 recorded in April and the 160 seen in May last year, it still sets the industry on course to break recent delivery records while also providing for an intriguing twist in emissions trends. There were some changes throughout the chassis market in May, but one thing that wasn’t tweaked was Volvo’s presence at the top of the leaderboard as it recorded 48 deliveries for the month. However, second went to a resurging BYD, with 33 zero-emissions bus deliveries seeing it claim silver ahead of Scania (18), while Yutong’s combination of 11 heavy and six light bus deliveries saw it fall to fourth. Custom Denning was the next best with seven deliveries, while BCI, King Long and Odin (light bus deliveries) all couldn’t be split with

recorded three deliveries, while I-Bus registered a sole light bus delivery. Volgren remained the supreme force in the bodybuilder segment, usurping its amazing April efforts with a further 75 deliveries in May. Yutong finished in a comfortable second place, its combination of 11 heavy and six light bus deliveries proving enough to finish ahead of BCI with 11 units. Irizar was nipping on BCI’s heels with the 10 deliveries, while King Long was level with Wisdom (light bus deliveries) with six units apiece. The remaining 21 deliveries were split between eight brands, highlighting the even spread of bodybuilding contributors across the local market. There must’ve been word on the street between sectors, as McConnell was similarly dominant in the seating sector as Volgren, finishing with the exact number in 75 deliveries for May. StyleRide’s strong month of 28 units delivered saw it claim second ahead of a closely following Sege (22). Yutong was a clear fourth with the 10 deliveries, while Fainsa (seven) narrowly edged out King Long (six).

Below: King Long enhanced

and Leadcom (one apiece).

For the first time in recent memory, there was no tight tussle at the top of the air-conditioning market as Coachair romped home to a resounding win courtesy of 55 deliveries. The next best was Spheros (18), who was a solitary unit ahead of a logjam including Cling-Yutong and Hispacold with 17 units apiece. Thermo King wasn’t far behind with the 13 deliveries, while Denso (10) stayed clear of a tight pack involving Valeo (eight), King Long (six) and BCC (five). To finish, Tongsun’s three deliveries saw it finish ahead of I-Bus (one).

It was one-way traffic in the state-based battle, with New South Wales rubbing in its historic State of Origin game one comeback over its maroon rival with a resounding May win. Its 68 deliveries for the month nearly doubled the second placed Queensland, with its 35 deliveries proving far too strong for Victoria (18). Not far behind the Vics were both South Australia with 16 deliveries and Western Australia with 15 units delivered, while the Northern Territory recorded a solitary delivery.

The trend between bus and coach power sources is continuing to gather momentum for zero-emissions units, with 73 of the 153 units for May being zero-emissions models. In this market, BYD was a clear leader through a stellar month involving 33 deliveries, with Yutong (11), Volvo (nine), Scania (seven), Custom Denning (seven) and Odin (six) all contributing strongly. Outside of this, Zhongtong also recorded two hybrid-electric models, leaving the remaining 78 deliveries to diesel vehicles. In this space, Volvo (39) was a clear leader ahead of Scania (six).

Next steps

For nearly 50 years, Prison Transport Group has been a transport operator

Nbeen happy with the status quo. As the CEO of Prison Transport Group, a charity operating for nearly half a century to provide free transport for families and friends of prisoners in south-east Queensland, he was already satisfied with facilitating connection for those who may not have had the means to stay in touch with loved ones.

“It’s a vital lifeline and shows the value of transport, to help those with no means or ability to visit their loved ones,” he told ABC

With a small fleet of seven buses often working over the weekend to fulfil this core purpose, Norm and PTG decided to challenge the operation.

“We decided to look at what else we could so as we had buses sitting idle during the week,” he says.

“We wanted to provide a group transport solution that diversifies our revenue and the profits going back into the organisation so we could then look to help more people.”

This resulted in the creation of People to GO, the social impact charter service of the Prison Transport Group. Across the same region, the organisation’s buses are now looking to target universities, corporate businesses, charities,

organisations to offer transport options for small groups of 11 to 20 people.

“What makes People to GO different is that it’s more than a transport service – it’s been created to generate social impact, with the revenue from charter bookings helping to support the work of Prison Transport Group in keeping families and friends connected with loved ones in prison and supporting breaking the cycle of incarceration, which we have been doing for nearly 50 years,” he says.

“Our focus is on delivering a professional and dependable charter experience while also giving organisations the opportunity to align their transport spend with genuine community impact. In short, when clients book with People to GO, they are not only accessing quality small group transport, but they are also contributing to a service that helps and support people staying connected.”

Under the tagline of ‘group transport has never been this good’, People to GO is pushing the boundaries on how much good an operator can do through weekly operations. A website has gone live for the new service, with Norm’s team

wanting specialist transport services.

“It’s not just about moving people from A to B, it’s a lot bigger than that,” he says.

“The impact that an organisation who uses our services can have on the bigger picture allows them to have a larger impact on society.”

Baby steps have seen People to GO support a couple of community groups, with the word beginning to spread about the new-look operation. Norm says the purpose of the wider group, encompassing the long-standing Prison Transport Group side, is to help break the cycle and support the loved ones of incarcerated people by providing essential transport services.

He says this philanthropic venture may soon expand to impacting the next generation through opportunities and educational pathways, allowing more people to avoid the justice system.

“We want People to GO to have a direct impact on furthering our core charitable purpose and mission – I want to go hard,” he says.

“We have lofty goals and targets, such as completing more than 100 charter trips over a 12 month period, so we can establish the brand and report on our social impact.”
