A message from the editor of It seems wherever you look in Australia and New Zealand, you find rail development. The Australasian Railway Association – our partner in this publication – estimates joint Government spending on rail between now and 2030 could reach as much as $100 billion. Between new passenger lines in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Brisbane, light rail just about everywhere, freight projects like Inland Rail, and intermodal developments all around the region, it’s clear there’s a significant volume of work underway in every segment of the rail sector. Then there’s the significant volume of ongoing work generated by thousands of kilometres of heavy haul, freight, passenger and light railways already operating across the region. The Australasian Rail Industry Awards Gala Dinner is the premier industry event recognising the outstanding achievements by individuals and organisations in the rail industry in Australia and New Zealand. The Australasian Rail Industry Awards organising committee consists of representatives from the ARA, Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE), Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA), Rail Track Association of Australia (RTAA) and the Permanent Way Institution (PWI). The 2018 Awards Dinner was held at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne, with 500 people in attendance to celebrate the great innovations and achievements of individuals and organisations in the rail sector. Proceeds from the 2018 event went towards the TrackSAFE Foundation, a registered harm prevention charity established by the industry to endeavour to reduce near collisions, injuries and fatalities on the rail network resulting from suicide and reckless behaviour.
