There’s nothing quite like an Aussie summer no matter where in this vast nation you reside.

It’s a chance to look back on the year that was, and look forward to the year ahead.

We’re all older – and maybe a bit wiser – in many ways, making it a satisfying season to take it all in.

Speaking of recharging the batteries, that’s one thing we look on sharply in this edition of Australian Car Mechanic.

Being the vehicular luddite I am, I once allowed my battery to die while I was watching the footy and waiting for the Prahan Market to open.

The distinct sputtering and twitching the engine gives off at the twist of the key is a sign you’ve pushed your luck a quarter too far.

Thankfully my resident roadside assist team were there to give me looks of (welldeserved) patronising pity.

Jeremi tests out Philips new UltinonPro LED globes

Having recently expanded his workshop from two bays to four, Jeremi’s replacing more globes than ever for his growing customer base.

Jeremi tested the globes out on a 2005 Mercedes, with the Ultinon LED globes able to fit a variety of car models and years.

The Access2500 globes – like others in the UltinonPro LED range – are glare-free and feature accurate road lighting with Lumiled tech.

Adrad’s Enhanced Design EGR Cooler

S

ome might regard aftermarket automotive parts to basically be an original part equivalent made by an alternate manufacturer and sold at a lower price point. For some suppliers, their aftermarket part’s specifications will match those of the OE product – which is often perfectly okay.

However, when the aftermarket parts supplier is an Australian business that understands manufacturing, design and construction of engine cooling products better than most, it can lead to some interesting and helpful benefits.

Take Adrad’s aftermarket EGR Cooler for Ford Ranger PK and Mazda BT-50, for example.

On the original unit, the curved hot-side exhaust inlet pipe is prone to stress due to thermal expansion and vibration.

The junction of this inlet pipe with the body of the EGR cooler has been known to crack from fatigue at the joint. Adrad’s revised design of this EGR cooler features 18

a flexible bellows inlet pipe to better absorb vibration and heat, making the unit much more durable.

The exhaust outlet neck on the same OE part was similarly found to be an area prone to failure with cracking due to vibration.

In addition, rotary slide valve 1 switches the coolant return from the engine oil cooler.

The coolant water is heated 30 per cent faster compared to the previous engine with a wax thermostat. The time required to reach the target oil temperature is reduced by around 50 per cent.

he first volume produced engines to be equipped with a multifunctional thermostat are the 1.8l and 2.0l TFSI engines from the VW-Group (fourcylinder in-line engine EA888 Gen.3). This module was developed jointly by Audi and Schaeffler. In the warm-up phase of the engine, the Thermal Management Module (TMM) is able to completely close the coolant inlet in the engine or set a minimum flow rate.

If the engine is warm from operation, the coolant temperature can be adjusted quickly and fully variably to different temperature levels depending on load requirements and external boundary conditions.

The TMM has two coupled rotary slide valves, which are operated by only one drive motor. One of these rotary slide valves is on the pressure side of the water pump and is designed for shutting off the coolant.

The second rotary slide valve is used for distributing coolant on the intake side.

The entire cooling circuit also has switching valves to enable the flow of coolant through the heater and the transmission oil heat exchanger to be switched on and off in a targeted manner.

Cool Mavericks was published by the peak training and stewardship body in mobile air conditioning, VASA (Automotive Air Conditioning, Electrical and Cooling Technicians of Australasia). Its authors were VASA’s foundation president and industry pioneer Mark Mitchell and VASA’s CEO for its first 20 years, journalist Ken Newton.

In the foreword of the weighty 700-page hard cover book, past-president of Mobile Air Climate Systems Association (MACS) USA Peter Coll noted, “the history of motor vehicle air conditioning is a fascinating journey that spans the oceans and relies heavily on influences outside of the engineering departments found in the car makers’ factories.”

Current VASA president Brett Meads said the book would appeal to anyone with an interest in the Australian spirit of innovation, as well as automotive history.

While Australia’s pioneer role in mobile air conditioning development dominates the book, many of its pages are devoted to the early patents and vital discoveries that needed to be made before a cooling system based on refrigeration would ever work in a moving vehicle.

For example, the early refrigerants used in the first waves of stationary refrigeration in America were so toxic that if used in a vehicle, one leak and everyone in the car would die – and rigid lines used to carry refrigerants in the vehicles of the 1950s and 1960s didn’t last on poor road surfaces. The physical componentry of air conditioning had to be thought out and patented. Finally, somebody had to figure out how to stuff all this gear into a machine that was never designed to be mechanically air conditioned in the first place.

The car air conditioning industry in Australia was full of characters. There were larrikins, opportunists and true entrepreneurs, but all of them in their own way were explorers working with nothing more than an idea of how to cool the biggest variety of vehicles on the planet in one country, and most of them worked out of a tin shed.

Watch out Darker red/orange particles may indicate rust. Rust is a very serious threat as it can form sub-micron particles which easily travel through the fuel filter and once inside the fuel system will cause an increasing amount of abrasive rust to form.

Allowing the sample to stand for a few hours may allow water to drop to the bottom of the bottle where it can easily be determined, and of course if there’s water in the fuel there may also be algae or other growths in the fuel.

Note: Keep in mind that up to 80 per cent of diesel fuel system faults are the result of water contaminated fuel in the system. Fitting new injectors when fuel is still contaminated will result in damage to all replaced parts in the fuel system, including new injectors. All fuel system components must be replaced and lines etc thoroughly cleaned of all contamination.

In Common Rail Diesel vehicles, many fault codes are just a symptom and not the actual problem, so replacing failed components may not resolve the vehicles issues, or the same issue keeps recurring.

This is where diagnostic tools are essential for resolving the basis of our fault codes.

Primarily, the most important and first job is a diagnostic test must be performed on Diesel vehicles with a suspected fuel system related issue. The basic step of obtaining a fuel sample and inspecting it.

We can learn a lot from a visual inspection of a fuel sample.

Collect fuel samples from an area where water and particles are likely to gather, for example from the fuel filter base or the fuel tank pick up canister. By placing the fuel sample into a clear glass bottle of about 50-250ml (reagent sample bottles can be purchased from Specialist Tools Australia), you will be able to see if there are any contaminants within the fuel. Using a small LED torch (work light), the light will make the metal particles appear larger and become visible to the naked eye. The bright shiny metal that may be seen with the LED torch is from wear to components such as injector spindles and the supply pump components.

Some of the active tests and operational checks we can perform are injector compensations (feedback) levels, injector return volumes (magnet valve injectors) or return pressures (Piezo injectors). Injector operation isolation, function of EGR valve and operation of turbo VNT/VGT system.

Note: the EGR valve can often be temporarily blocked off as a test.

Diesel Injectors may also require removal for computerised testing.

the issues below in a diesel vehicle. If the vehicle is underperforming or experiencing a combination of the issues below, consider starting with a diesel engine compression test and you may want to perform a cylinder leakage test.

This kit can assist with diagnosing many common issues such as miss-fire or roughness when running, poor fuel economy or increased oil consumption, unusual smoke, unexplainable loss of power and excessive crank case pressure.

Generally, depending on individual vehicles each cylinder of the engine should measure within approx. 5-10 percent of each other. If the compression in the engine is in doubt, too low, too high or deviates too drastically from one cylinder to the next a cylinder leakage test can help locate the cause of the issue, or which specific internal engine fault is present.

Fuel Return Flow Kit Injector Test Common Rail Diesel SA-8392 This kit measures the volume of fuel returned from each injector on magnet valve (solenoid) injector systems. Low rail pressure in a common rail fuel system can often result in poor or no engine starting, rough running and poor acceleration or misfire.

A common reason for rail pressure loss can be caused by a faulty injector, which will see excessive fuel being returned to the fuel tank (also referred to as ‘back leakage’), with this excessive back leakage, rail pressure cannot be maintained, and the system cannot operate correctly. When engine is at operating temperature this can be more evident when starting and at idle as fuel pressure is directly related to engine cranking speed and fuel temperature.

injector can send more fuel back to the tank, The SA-8392 kit makes both conditions obvious. It is comprehensive and can cater for up to 8 injectors in one test.

Why mechanics should love car shows You come for the cars and leave with new clients; why the local car show is a must for mechanics WORDS AND IMAGES: IAIN CURRY

T

he smartest mechanics I know go to car shows. They’re enthusiasts, so of course it’s an enjoyable way to spend their Saturday or Sunday mornings. But there’s more to it. Car shows are the biggest shop window a mechanic can have. Bring along your own well turned out car – modern or classic – put a few business cards on the windscreen and there’s perfect direct target-market advertising…. For free.

I’ll give you an example. The other weekend I popped along to a show local to me, organised by the Sunshine Coast’s Roadrunner Car Club. I’d hauled along my 25-year-old BMW E39 530i, best described as in ‘original’ condition.

Its red paintwork polished up surprisingly well on this hot spring day, but it was no match for most of the automotive eye candy on display. Think Porsche 911 GT3 race car, an immaculate 23-window VW Kombi, 8.2-litre 1972 Cadillac Eldorado convertible land yacht and a sprinkling of hot rods.

Having a gander While drooling over the varied mix of machinery, I spotted the mechanic I’ve used for years. My weakness for Euro cars – and his specialism in them – means he’s been my go-to for the mechanical stuff beyond my skillset. He was out with his kids, enjoying the event.

Why? Because he’s a car guy. That’s why I use him, and recommend him to my friends who ask after a good local mechanic.

“I saw your BMW out the front,” he said, having his head turned – understandably - by this high point of executive sedan engineering and design. He asked after the big 5-Series’ health, then immediately recalled we’d discussed doing engine mounts a year ago after he’d freshened the gearbox.

“Yep, gotta get that done,” I said, and in a heartbeat, out came his digital diary and he said he’s got space in a couple of weeks. Job locked in, we went for ice cream. He even paid. Call me a sucker for good customer care – and a Mr Whippy cone – but it’s little wonder this chap has a bulging job diary.

This same mechanic then spent the rest of the morning enjoying the cars and getting into conversations with owners. Many classic car custodians are able to do much of the mechanical work themselves, but there are always specialist jobs when they need to call in someone with that next level of skill.

Here’s part two of the story. I was lingering over a 1973 Chevy Corvette Stingray in gorgeous sunburst orange paint, and got talking to a fella also admiring it. We joked about how the harsh Queensland sun wasn’t going to help it long-term, and I mentioned the sun-faded red paint on my BMW. Turns out this guy works at a paint correction specialist – local to me, but I’d never heard of them – and he talked me through possibilities and prices. No hard sell, just a bloke who knew his stuff, and obviously a car guy as he was simply there to check out the show. I’ve no idea if I’ll use him in future, but now I’ve got his details he’s front of queue when I find some dollars to go ahead with a paint revival.

While we’re talking business, I noticed the show’s banner listing the car club’s sponsors. There were the usual big guns like Shannons and Rare Spares, but I noted the local Autobarn franchise was a sponsor, as was a local used car dealership.

A nearby motorcycle repair shop advertised, but no independent car mechanic did likewise. Lost opportunity,

I thought, as you’ve got hundreds of locals coming through these gates.

Finding a few hundred bucks to show support to a local car event – endearing you to the car owning community – can’t be a bad investment.

Points for style There’s another reason mechanics should love car shows. Seeing enthusiastic kids and teenagers get a kick out of special vehicles builds enthusiasm for them to ultimately work in the industry. And with a mechanic skills shortage in many parts of Australia, the more this next generation sees the trade as a viable career path the better. They just need reminding that not everyone can be a millionaire YouTube influencer.

At the show, many of the younger crowd were drawn to modern weapons like a modified Ford Mustang GT, Toyota GR Yaris and V10 Audi R8. But hearteningly, I heard a few ask their dads about the classics on show. “What’s one of those?” and “what engine’s in that?” being the usual, and who can blame them when peering into the engine bay of a 1970 Pontiac Le Mans Sport and being wowed by an unshrouded GM V8?

When the earth-rumbling sound of a 427 Cobra Le Mans engine fired, I spotted one kid jump like he’d been electrocuted. Then an almighty grin covered his face, and he clearly mouthed ‘wow’ as his voice was drowned out by a heavy-drinking bent eight. Make no mistake, that same kid is now far more likely to want to work on cars when he’s grown up. From a pure enthusiast’s perspective, car shows help remind why we all got into cars in the first place.

And a show that welcomes allcomers typically brings an eclectic mix to cover practically every car kink of every attendee.

It is Noosa, so beach buggies have been open-air, exposed-engine funsters in these parts for decades.

I’ll admit to having an unhealthy interest in 1950s sportscar racing, so I had to take a moment with a Porsche 550 roadster – you know, the James Dean one – dressed in racing livery and with vintage crash helmet on its impossibly low bucket seat. Its owner got busy telling stories of taking this aircooled replica to Italy and driving in the Mille Miglia revival, which feels about as far away as possible from today’s EVs silently sitting in traffic.

Treasure hunt A pair of beach buggies – one a genuine Meyers Manx – reminded how incredibly fun (albeit not terribly safe) classic cars can be, while VW Kombis, an original 1975 two-door Range Rover and immaculate 1976 Peugeot 504 wagon with seven vinyl seats (remember how they burned?!) looked far more enjoyable family transport than today’s same-same SUVs. Impossibly low Porsche 550 replica reminds how 1950s sportscar design was a high point.

Hot rods, Australian and American muscle, bobber motorcycles and even a replica of Fred Flintstone’s Cavemobile competed for attention, while the usual crowds gathered around their favourites, expressed opinions and told old stories. Proper car show stuff.

Then there’s always a bit of fun seeing who the judges pick as their show winner. For this event, a 1947 Ford Tudor took top honours, this classic two-door sedan looked impossibly production line-fresh despite its 75 years of life. A superb restoration.

Coming away from this type of show, I couldn’t help thinking, for a mechanic or workshop owner, it’s always a winwin. From a purely commercial perspective it’s a damn good way to score some more business if work is slow.

I know a few long retired car mechanics who pick up plenty of job offers at such shows to earn them a bit of pocket money. Let’s just say not all such earnings are known to the tax man, but there’s no harm in keeping the brain and hands sharp by dusting off the old tools every so often. Such work can be therapeutic, and beats daytime television hands down.

Bang on A super(car) partnership with Castrol

B

arry Bangay Motors’ relationship with Castrol dates all the way back to the 1970s, and since taking over the popular Ringwood business two decades ago, owner Joel Evans has kept the Castrol flowing.

To acknowledge his passion for the green, white and red, Joel and his team were surprised with an exclusive Supercars experience at the Sandown 500 in September, with the workshop logo adorning integrated into a particularly special livery on the Castrol Racing Tickford Ford Mustang.

Joystick Recognised and beloved from the early years of the Japan Super GT series and Gran Turismo video games, the #55 supercar carried the iconic Castrol colours of the TOM’s Supra – generating plenty of buzz and attention across a chaotic weekend of racing.

“Attention from media and spectators was really high, and seeing our logo on 48

there, I’ll have those memories forever,” Joel said.

“I’ve had a lot of companies try to drag me away from Castrol over the years, but for me it’s about the quality and the brand and making sure we’re offering the best product to the customer.

“Quality and reliability mean everything to us...and I don’t have to do much in terms of selling Castrol. It sells itself.”

Joel gained an interest in cars and scrutineering at a young age thanks to his uncle who was president of the Victorian Porsche Club, and he said he’s loved pulling things apart and fixing them for as long as he can remember.

“One of my first jobs as a teenager was pulling apart lawnmowers and washing machines,” he said.

“It was a lot of small engine stuff... go karts, whipper snippers, and then I progressed to an exhaust and brake shop. I was getting my hands dirty and getting right into it.”

All bases covered Joel’s journey to workshop ownership began when he was selected into the VACC Group Scheme more than 30 years ago.

Since that time, he’s honed his craft in a range of settings – from service stations to prestige workshops.

“I got to see a lot of good things and a lot of things that I thought should be done differently and hoped that one day I could put all that together,” he said.

“What we’ve got now, I’m pretty proud of.”

Today, Barry Bangay Motors covers all aspects of mechanical repairs and servicing, including logbook servicing, electrical work, suspension modifications and engine rebuilds.

Looking to the future, Joel spoke about hybrids, electric vehicles, and rapid technological change, and said he was looking forward to the future evolution of his business.

“With new technologies, you still get the pleasure of seeing how something works

and being able to fix it, but fixing things now is different to how it used to be – now it’s a lot more electrical stuff to be replaced as opposed to mechanical things that need to be repaired, but you evolve,” he said.

“The end result is still the same in being able to see how something works and get it working for someone again.

“It’s a good challenge and something I still really enjoy.

“We stay up-to-date and upskill through in-house and online technical training. You really have to keep your finger on the pulse.”

The classic Castrol green, red and white livery is just as longstanding as Castrol’s relationship with Barry Bangay Motors.

Wheel/life balancing Joel said finding work-life balance as a small business owner was a challenge, as was accessing apprentices and talented mechanics.

“It’s important to have a strong support network and hold onto good workers…if you’ve got a good team around you, you can run a really successful business,” he added.

“I want to make sure it’s a place that if I was in their position, I’d want to work here too.”

Joel’s advice to new workshop owners was to “have good products and build trust and loyalty with customers”.

“Communication is the biggest part of building a relationship with the customer,” he said.

“Being transparent all the way through, with pricing and the process of the job makes a massive difference to building that trust.”

Electric Shock

lectric cars have ruined everything.

They’re taking away our highrevving four-cylinders, buttery smooth straight-sixes, burbling bent-eights and screaming V12s, and what are we left with? Single-moving-part electric motors with the soul of a refrigerator. Worse yet there’s no proper noise, no manual gearbox to stir and the cars are heavy big lumps with glorified Duracells in the chassis.

This cosmic shift from combustion engines to EVs has been the most extreme change to the auto industry in over a century. This, of course, means most working in the trade – mechanics included

– have been, or will be, monumentally affected. For businesses like late-model car servicing/repair workshops, you sense it’s a case of evolve or die.

But wait. What if we don’t need to completely fear an electric future, at least from a driver’s perspective? I’m an unapologetic petrolhead, but there’s one recently emerged EV that’s turned my head in a way no electric car has yet managed: Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N.

For the drivers Why? It’s aimed squarely at you and I. People who got into this trade for the love

of how cars make us feel. Enthusiast stuff.

The noise, vibrations, performance and, of course, the driver engagement. Most of the above are missing-in-action in EVs. They may be blisteringly fast in a straight line – the latest Porsche Taycan Turbo hits 100km/h in a blink over two seconds – but would you really rather use one around Mt Panorama over a petrol-sucking 911 GT3 RS? Me neither.

Back to the Hyundai. The Korean company is a relatively new player to the performance segment, but boy, what an impact it’s made. The brand’s i30N hot hatchback arrived in 2018 and rattled the

establishment, quickly elbowing out VW’s Golf GTI and Renault’s Megane R.S. as the enthusiast’s choice.

It’s now got the jump on EV rivals with this battery-powered Ioniq 5 N. It’s the first EV where driver engagement goes hand-inhand with the almighty acceleration offered by battery electric cars.

I needed more convincing than most. As a motoring journalist for 25 years, I’ve enjoyed hundreds of cooking combustion engines on remote twisting backroads and racetracks, and the idea of their demise kills me inside.

Hyundai has worked hard to prove its EVs can somewhat fill the void. Ahead of the

Ioniq 5 N’s Australian on-sale, I tested the electric upstart at South Korea’s Yeongam Grand Prix circuit. A few months later, and now in Aussie showrooms costing a chunky $111,000 plus on-roads, I enjoyed a day testing one at Queensland Raceway.

You’ll have to trust me when I say it’s an utterly addictive performance car, although still very different to our dearly beloved petrol playthings.

But how? Helping matters, Hyundai pinched former BMW M Division boss Albert Biermann to head up its ‘N’ program – a man synonymous with delivering soul-stirring, driver-focused performance cars. Biermann

served as executive technical adviser for the Ioniq 5 N, and engineers clearly came around to his way of thinking. Basically, fun and being a ‘corner rascal’ were nonnegotiables.

Lamborghini fast Performance was the easy bit. There’s an electric motor over each axle, serving 166kW/350Nm up front and 282kW/390Nm the rear. The combined 478kW/770Nm (in N Grin Boost mode) matches a Porsche 911’s power, while 100km/h is up in only 4.3 seconds. That’s Lamborghini Huracan quick, despite the 5 N weighing a lardy 2.2 tonnes due to the massive, heavy 84kWh battery incorporated in its skateboard chassis.

Now for the really clever bits. EVs don’t have gearboxes like we typically know them, so there are no proper cogs to shift – something we drivers enjoy doing.

Hyundai’s solution is the N e-Shift, where eight pretend gears change while simulating the jolts of a ‘real’ dual clutch transmission.

There are steering wheel paddles to do it yourself, and it even bounces off a fake 8000rpm rev limiter, then throttle blips on downshifts.

I know, I know. It sounds horribly video game artificial. Not everybody likes it, but I for one accept the fakery and appreciate it adds an extra layer of driver engagement versus other EVs. Same with the noise. The Ioniq 5 N has eight internal and two external speakers belting out a choice of three simulated sounds. One of these does a solid job mimicking a four-cylinder petrol race car, so putting the shoe in, there’s the familiar, reassuring sound of revs surging and falling, the car using RPM, speed and torque data to make it feel authentic. I couldn’t help but grin at the fake popping backfires when lifting off the throttle.

More smarts arrive with the car’s N Torque Distribution. There’s choice of 11 different steps where you can tailor what torque percentage goes where. Choose from classic 50-50 torque split; all up front and none to the back; or go full rear-drive with everything sent through the back treads. Incredibly, you can make changes on the move and completely change the car’s personality. Neutral, a bit of understeer, then full balls-out oversteer monster. It’s mind-bending.

Then there’s the N Pedal. This alters regenerative braking force - where an EV harvests energy back to the battery when braking or coasting – and in the Ioniq 5 N’s case, helps the giant 400mm/360mm rotors with the anchoring performance. In maximum setting, the regen alone delivers an eyeball-bulging 0.6G deceleration. On the track, you can actually dive into corners on throttle lift-off alone, so think how much longer your pads will last at a track day.

Tailored to suit If you love delving into different car setups – without the need to break out the spanners – it’s a revelation. There are pre-set drive modes and custom ones, where you can alter the motors, steering, adjustable suspension, stability control and electronic limited slip diff, as well as your N Pedal and torque distribution. It’s a bit overwhelming to we old-school lot, but it reminds of elite sim racers who expertly modify a car’s setup to seemingly F1-like levels of detail.

Despite the artificial sounds and gear shifts, there’s absolutely nothing pretend about the performance and joy this clever car delivers. Its bucket seats and steering

Having enough juice to go long-distance is a concern many have with EVs, and it’s something Hyundai specifically aimed to address with this car. wheel are coated in racy Alcantara, seating position is low and driving position excellent. Then, on an open track, from the first stomp on the loud pedal you must retrain your brain on what you thought possible in an EV. Acceleration in ‘N’ Mode is extraordinary, and you watch the fake revs rapidly build in the digital driver display as the simulated engine noise fills the cabin. Pull the steering wheel paddle just before redline and the jolt is significant… race car like. I think by turn two I’d already forgotten the fakery and got busy enjoying the maniacal speed, incredible cornering balance and meaty, direct steering feel.

It’s such a playful car too, despite its mass. There’s enough body roll to help

on the feedback front, and the rear end communicates beautifully when you come off the power in turns, and - wow - how it likes to slide. If you’ve sent most of the torque to the rear, it’ll perform a delightful smoky drift, although it’s not a cheap exercise burning through 275/35R21 Pirelli P-Zero rubber. There’s even a Drift Optimiser mode, but really, at 2.2 tonnes it’s not that sort of car.

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. That’s all great fun, but as it’s an EV it’ll use up all its battery charge in five laps, or – if you read social media –the battery will explode and burn for three months. Not the case.

Hyundai refused to put an N badge on this car unless it was track useable, so there’s smart colling and advanced battery thermal

management, plus an Endurance mode which slightly reduces maximum output and increases range.

We’re assured it’ll lap the Nürburgring twice (42km) at sub-eight-minute pace without performance loss. Most would want a break after that anyway. At Queensland Raceway I was putting in 20-minute flat-chat track sessions, then would break and use the on-site fast charger to top up.

But let’s not sugarcoat it. EV charging is much more of a faff than sloshing in some petrol, and racetracks must seriously improve their electricity capacity and fast chargers if they’re going to accommodate EVs at track days.

Yet this takes very little away from what is the first truly engaging and fun electric performance car. It’s not the same as the petrol types we love so much – thrills are delivered differently.

But for those of us fearful of an allelectric future, it’s heartening to know some car companies haven’t forgotten about we types who still love and buy cars for driver enjoyment and engagement. Not all mechanics will be convinced by the likes of Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N, but if you’re willing to give any EV a chance, this is the one.

Sealing the deal with JB Weld RTV silicone

P

arts are the mainstay of any workshop; they are the bread and butter items that keep the wheels turning – literally. But how many times have you almost finished a job to find that there is something like a gasket missing, lost or broken, and time is ticking away.

Or scenario number two; you’re working on an older car and not all parts are readily available.

That’s when you need an instant solution that is proven and convenient. JB Weld is a master at providing these solutions and JB Weld Original Cold-Weld (#8265-s) Steel Reinforced Epoxy is a product that is on every workshop inventory, as is the JB Weld RTV silicone range.

Most workshops will use JB Weld RTV silicones on a daily basis because they are used to seal a whole host of parts such as valve covers, timing covers, sumps and more; essentially surfaces that need to keep the fluid in and the dirt out.

RTV stands for Room Temperature Vulcanising, which means that the silicone cures at room temperature when exposed to moisture in the air. It sets in around an hour with a full cure in 24 hours.

JB Weld uses 100 per cent silicone for its range and is ideal for gaskets because it 60

has very low shrinkage when cured, and the material remains compliant without being hard or brittle. It is also resistant to gas, diesel, oil and other automotive fluids, so it won’t disintegrate over time.

Each type of RTV silicone – denoted by the differing colours – has its own characteristics that makes one better than another depending on the application.

The right stuff

Ultimate Black is commonly used in OEM applications and has a higher resistance to heat and is best used on parts such as sumps.

Ultimate Grey RTV is for high torque uses like intake manifolds where high torque loads are applied to the sealant. This sealant is more flexible when cured and remains oil resistant.

Ultimate Copper RTV is three times more oil resistant than conventional silicones and designed to resist the high operating temperatures of turbocharged or highperformance engines.

Hi Temp Red RTV is for uses where there is substantial heat such as exhaust manifolds.

It is also sensor safe and can be used on O2 sensors.

Blue RTV is also a general-purpose silicone.

Workshops use silicone epoxies on a daily basis, meaning reliability and consistency are musts.

There are a couple of varieties which include ‘sensor-safe’ that means that engine and transmission sensors will not be affected by the silicone. This product is not designed for high temperatures.

Black RTV is a general-purpose product used for sealing a variety of metals, rubber and glass and ideal for auto and household applications.

White RTV is a general-purpose silicone for use in household or mechanical assembly applications and forms a tough, waterproof, mildew and mould resistant seal.

Clear RTV is good to use where you don’t want the product to be easily seen such as sealing windscreens. It works on ceramics, cloth and carpet, glass, rubber and metals.

While JB Weld RTV silicone is ideal for permanent seals it can also be used in applications where repeated removal is necessary such as valve covers. The trick there is to apply the silicone and allow it to cure before installing the part. This makes a flexible seal that does not bond to the other surface; however, you have to use the right amount of silicone build-up to make sure there is a proper seal in place.
