Letter from the Editor It’s week eight of the final quarter of the year. I’m not sure why the end of the year always surprises me, but here we are once again.

We’ve wished for each essay to be over already and to survive another week of midterms and obligations. But when all the wishing is done and we’ve made it through another week of late-night cramming, the quarter is far behind us.

Of course we enjoy it while it passes, but that doesn’t stop us from asking, “Where did the quarter go?”

So take a moment to relax and enjoy these last few weeks. Whether you just picked up your cap and gown or you’re trying to figure out the logistics of moving out for the summer, it’s not quite over yet.

Look back at the time “Parks and Recreation” shot on campus and learn a little bit about how other shows come to UCLA to film (Filming at UCLA). Beg and plead for a swipe so you can try a dining hallinspired recipe (Culinary Compositions).

The Independent Shake­ speare Company puts on an annual free festival at the park’s Old Zoo amphitheater, located in the Los Feliz neighbor­ hood. Hiking is a great free option for those looking to inject their workout regime with a bit of new scenery. Escondido Falls in Malibu is a four­mile roundtrip hike that offers big rewards at the end. The trail begins by passing a number of multimillion­dollar homes and then transports you into the forest. The hike itself isn’t strenuous unless you want to challenge yourself at the very end. While Lower Escondido Falls, a 50­foot waterfall, greets you at the end of the trail, Upper Escondido Falls is a bit more of a trek. The festival, which runs from Aug. 16­18, features three nights of performances in legendary clubs such as The Viper Room, Whiskey A Go­Go and the House of Blues. The event culminates on Saturday with a massive festival in the streets, featuring outdoor performances, a beer garden and plenty of other activities to go around. Though this year’s lineup has yet to be announced, last year’s event included Motley Crue, Public Enemy and Matt & Kim. General admission tickets run for $55.

A few weeks ago, I paid a visit to Psychic Readings on Gayley Avenue to have my fortune told.

If you haven’t seen it, the shop is next to El Pollo Loco at the far end of Westwood Village, down the block from Whole Foods Market. It has a large front window bathed in orange neon stars and crescent moons, with some pharaoh-like heads on display.

The door was open when I arrived.

Inside, the only furnishings were a small side table covered in red cloth and two armchairs with fake gold paint.

No one was there, but as I was about to leave I heard a voice behind me.

“Are you here for a reading?”

I turned and faced the speaker, a short woman with sharp features. She had dark eyes and dirty brown hair that fell just below her shoulders. She looked about 30 and was dressed in jeans and a casual shirt.

I said I wanted to know my future. The woman, who later introduced herself as Britney, suggested a few options, including an $80 deluxe prophecy that was out of my price range. We decided on a $25 palm reading.

Britney pointed me toward one of the armchairs. She sat across from me and took my palm in her hands, then, after glancing at it for a second or two, looked up and began to speak in a quick, matterof-fact manner.

I will live to be very old, 86 or 87, she said. I have great success ahead of me, and wealth will come in the not-too-distant future.

I asked her what I should do after I graduate. She looked back at my palm.

“It doesn’t say.”

The fortune continued. I will have a happy marriage, with two or three children.

But – and here is where things started to go downhill – something is troubling me.

Some event or person in my past. There is a lot of negative energy surrounding me that threatens to ruin my life.

She stopped to let the information sink in, then deadpanned: “Do you understand what I’m saying?”

I told her I did and asked how I could get rid of the negative energy.

No doctor can cure me, she said. What is needed is a Cleansing Candle, to remove the negative forces, and a Search i ng Candle to explain where they came from.

These would normally cost about $800, but Britney said I could have them for just $100 apiece.

I told her I understood that I would be very wealthy in the future, but at the present I was a bit short on cash. And really, I was not about to spend $200 on candles.

Britney didn’t give up. She said it wasn’t about the money – that if she could pay for the candles herself she would, but I needed to show a commitment to the process.

“Understand that we’re in this together,” she said with pleading eyes.

We argued back and forth for another five minutes, after which I was ready to say just about anything to get out of there with my savings still intact. I made up a story about having to ask my dad for $200 to heal my spirit. Britney encouraged me to lie and say I needed the money for textbooks.

I forked over $25 for the reading and left, feeling cheated.

So a few days later I walked to The Mystic’s Altar, a metaphysical shop in the Persian district along Westwood Boulevard.

A sign at the front read, “Enter all who seek.” I sought a second opinion.

I spoke with Deseret Tavares, co-founder of the store and a “celebrity psychic to the stars,” according to her booking card. She claims to have read for more than 11,000 people in her 10 years as a career clairvoyant, including for some well-known actors such as Halle Berry.

Tavares looked me up and down and said that I have no negative energy whatsoever,

and that in fact my spirit is in balance with those around me. A relief!

But then, if I wasn’t cursed, I was back at square one. So I asked Tavares to predict my future, and we scheduled a tarot card reading for the following day.

The reading began with Tavares lighting about a dozen candles at an altar in her office. She sat down at her desk, picked out a few colorful perfume bottles and sprayed them over her head. Then we got down to business.

Tavares divided her tarot deck into three piles and asked me to pick one. I went for the

middle. She shuffled her deck and dealt out the top cards to form three pyramids.

The cards help Tavares communicate with my spiritual guides via her spiritual guides, she said. In other words, a voice in her head tells her how to interpret stories that the cards lay out. It’s a literal meeting of the minds, only somehow my consciousness was never clued in.

Tavares started by telling me about my present.

“You’re trying to develop some sort of a plan in terms of where you’re going next and what you’re going to do. ... You’re closing a chapter and moving to the next stage, and you need to figure out what will make you happy,” she said, and pointed at a card. “It says here you’re afraid to make a decision because you don’t want to make a mistake.”

Well, true. I’m graduating in less than one month and I don’t know what I’ll do or where

I’ll go after. But the thing is, I told Tavares this before the reading began.

We looked at three possible locations for me to live in next year – I could stay in Los Angeles; return to the Bay Area, where I’m from; or move to Washington, D.C., where I’ve never been. Surprisingly, Tavares said my future is brightest in the capital.

Much of the fortune telling consisted of generalities that could be applied to almost any graduating senior. And some of what Tavares said was incorrect.

She asked me what schools I’m thinking of applying to, when I haven’t considered graduate school yet. She said I need to stop letting my mom control the decisions I make, but my mom hasn’t said anything about what she thinks I should do with my life.

When the reading was over, I thanked Tavares for her time and went on my way. I still wasn’t satisfied.

Armed with new information, though, I went back to the psychic shop on Gayley Avenue and confronted Britney.

It appears I don’t have negative energy after all, I said, recounting what Tavares told me. I asked Britney if she had invented things to try and squeeze more money out of me. She wasn’t pleased.

Britney summoned the owner of Psychic Readings, a woman who answered my questions but declined to provide her

name.

“I’ve been (in Westwood) for 26 years, and I have never had any complaints,” the owner said. “We’re not here to take people for a ride, we don’t work like that.”

As for Britney, she stood by her original conviction. I do have negative energy, and the longer I wait to cleanse it the worse it will get, she said defiantly.

Who’s right, I don’t know. Doubtless, only the future will tell.

MEET THE BOCARSLYS

s a third­generation Bruin, David Bocarsly knew how to do an 8­clap before he could talk.

Bocarsly’s paternal grandparents met at UCLA, after his grandfather, Sid, returned from being drafted in World War II. All three of Sid’s sons attended UCLA, and two of them, including Bocarsly’s father Lance, met their wives at UCLA. “My dad always told us about how my mom worked at North Campus Eatery as a cashier. He used to always pick her line so he could talk to her until he built up the courage to ask her out,” said Bocarsly, a third­year economics student and student government president.

The pair dated for four years and married in 1986. According to Bocarsly, both of his parents are driven to help those less fortunate than them, a desire that was instilled in them by their UCLA education.

His mother, Vivienne, earned her teaching credential from UCLA and went on to work as a middle school counselor. His father began practicing real estate law after earning a law degree from UCLA, and now specializes in low­ income housing.

“My parents are always willing to help people, and they raised me with those values as well. I think being exposed to so many different issues at UCLA showed them how much they can do to help others,” Bocarsly said.

ith parents who still volunteer to /02,'.)0%/10$'1#;0'"$'!#'!/0")'7)%!' dorms, third­year English student Laura Mead was raised in a home that values both Bruin involvement and tradition.

“I made my decision to attend UCLA knowing that going to (my parents’) alma mater would bring so much joy to (their) hearts,” Mead said.

Ron and Jane Mead were both involved in the Christian fraternity and sorority on campus, but didn’t talk much until a camping trip with a group of friends. The pair then attended a formal between their two houses and, according to Laura Mead, it was the best date that Jane 0;0)'/*3&'Q*4)*'V0*3C%',*)0$!%'%!*)!03'#.7+"*22-' dating the day her father graduated from UCLA in 1984.

Mead described both her parents as knowledgeable, yet easygoing and incredibly supportive, something she credits to their UCLA education.

“My mom is constantly saying how UCLA has helped her to become a self­starter,” Mead said.

While she said that there are more positives than negatives in having two alumni for parents, Mead admitted that there is some added pressure to meet someone at UCLA. “My mom is always saying things like, ‘You never know, that guy in your orientation group might become your husband!’ I have to keep reminding her that I’m not going on the husband hunt anytime soon,” Mead said.

ne of Travis Fuller’s favorite memories with his family occurred during the 1995 UCLA v. Missouri basketball

game.

“I remember sitting in my living room, watching Tyus Edney run down the court in four seconds to make a layup to win the game, and seeing my family freak out around me,” the fourth­year history student said.

According to Fuller, sports are the main way his parents reconnect to UCLA. His mother and father met in 1980 at a social at Theta Xi, at which his mother, Kim, agreed to go out with his father, Charles, on the condition that he would come with her to her sorority’s formal the next week. The two have been together ever since.

Fuller said both he and his twin brother, Trevor, were strongly encouraged by his parents to attend UCLA. For Fuller, his parents’ past involvements shaped many of his decisions while attending UCLA as well. He joined the same fraternity as his dad, and holds the same tour guide position that his mother did as an undergraduate student.

“In a sense they brainwashed me, but I’ve had such great experiences that I can’t begrudge them for it. I don’t regret anything, but sometimes I wonder what I missed out on by being so single­minded in what I wanted to do,” Fuller said.

atasha Sellens was literally born into the Bruin family – her mother, Deena, went into labor at a UCLA football game against Washington State on Saturday, October 12, 1991.

“Apparently it was a really exciting game, so when my mom said they had to leave, (my dad) didn’t want to go. When she told him why, my dad stood up and shouted, ‘We’re having a baby!’ and ran through the stands,” said Sellens, now a third­year communication studies student.

Sellens’ parents began dating after meeting at the beach in 1982 during her mother’s third year *$3'/0)'.*!/0)'@+#!!C%'7.!/'-0*)& Scott was a biology student and the president of his fraternity, Lambda Chi, and Deena studied dance. At UCLA, their relationship consisted of library study dates, Greek life events and Deena using an open room in Lambda Chi to choreograph dances. Sellens described her father as a sports­obsessed dentist and her mother as a “professional volunteer” who takes pride in helping people.

In addition to having a room covered in UCLA memorabilia, the Sellens family even displays Bruin pride in its decorating schemes. “When we redid our house, we put in blue carpet. The walls are pale yellow. We didn’t even notice that we had turned our interior into another UCLA thing until later. It just seemed normal,” Natasha Sellens said.

Zealous fans waited outside Amy Poehler’s trailer while students attempted, and succeeded, in sneaking onto the “Parks and Recreation” set.

This was far from the minds of the show’s crew members when they arrived to film at UCLA in early February.

“We kind of exist in a vacuum because we look at our ratings in terms of Thursday night ratings,” said Doug Smith, a production coordinator on the show. “(College students don’t) watch it on Thursday nights at 8:30 p.m. It’s Hulu, it’s NBC.com, so we aren’t that aware of the 18 to 22 cohort.”

Surprise or not, students took advantage of watching the behind-the-scenes action of the television shoot in between classes, and even hung around into the late evening. While it is not every day that the cast of a popular television show descends on the hills of Westwood, UCLA is a popular place for film and television.

UCLA has had its fair share of onscreen time throughout the years. Flip through the cable channels and you might catch a glimpse of Janss Steps in “Old School,” “The Nutty Professor” or “The Sure Thing.” Maybe you have seen Reese Witherspoon outside Kerckhoff

Hall in “Legally Blonde” or Katie Holmes chatting up her love interest in the upstairs student lounges in Kerckhoff Hall in “First Daughter.”

In the past few years alone the campus has hosted the filming of Lifetime’s royal romance film “William and Kate,” the ABC Family show “Greek,” the ABC sitcom “Modern Family,” the CW show “90210” and even a Jack in the Box commercial.

Even w ith restrictions on UCL A locations, the university is popular for shoots. The small Film Locations Management Services team, a subset of the UCLA Events Office located in Kerckhoff Hall, fields between 15 and 20 weekly requests to shoot at UCLA. The calls vary from HBO to small independent studios to student films.

But it is not always clear that a show was filmed on the Bruin campus, and there is a reason for that.

While some non-state schools might be interested in attaching their name and image to a movie or television show (think Harvard in any number of movies), it is against the film and photography guidelines at UCLA. “We don’t want to endorse any project,” said Chansoth Hill, associate director for the UCLA Events Office, which serves as a coordinator and liaison for filming on campus.

This means some of the more iconic areas and angles of the campus are offlimits to cameras. This includes the full south facade of Royce Hall with roofline

and towers, the full north facade of Powell Library with roofline, the full north facade of Kerckhoff Hall with roofline and spires and the Bruin statue.

“We try to trick the angle. We try to cheat it so that it’s a nondescript university and not screaming, ‘We’re at UCLA,’” Hill said.

Other areas, like residential halls and medical center buildings, are considered off-limits for privacy reasons. There are other cases where crews will find it easier to film during spring and summer breaks, when there are fewer students on campus.

Smith and Tom Potier, a member of the production staff, said the producers for “Parks and Recreation” were adamant about using UCLA’s Freud Playhouse.

“You might take this place for granted, but it’s a venue of good size that looks well on screen, that we can get good angles and we can fit a group of this size,” Smith said.

Logistically, the campus provided the shoot with support rooms for production and space to cater to more than 100 cast and crew members. The spacious Freud Playhouse was also a fit for the running joke in the episode being shot that day – a presidential-style debate for a smalltown city council race, Smith said. “(The theater) marries up with the types of debates that we see on TV nowadays. We were looking for the same type of stuff they look for in debates today,” Potier said.

comfortably fit five podiums, a theater with seats for a large debate audience and space for six cameras, such as one on a jib arm, or crane, which could sweep across the room.

While location managers may fall in love with the campus, very few of the shoots go through, whether because of the logistics of filming while school is in session or the overall cost. Hill said it is important that location managers are familiar with the campus’s rules and guidelines from the start.

“People want to land a helicopter. …

We only have two helicopter pads, and one is on the hospital, so it’s only for emergencies,” Hill said.

Sometimes the cost of filming at a public university comes as a surprise to production teams. The cost of filming at UCLA is competitive with other universities in the area, and profits go back to supporting the university, Hill said. But the cost will vary depending on the specific locations and the length of production.

This includes supporting the Events Office itself and student-run events that it helps put on. The JazzReggae Festival, Spring Sing and culture nights in Royce Hall are all provided free location and on-site management services by the Events Office.

There are also location managers who are surprised when Hill says she cannot interrupt classes on campus. According to Hill, it goes against the UCLA mission to allow film shoots to interrupt campus

She said the shoot for “Old School,” released in 2003, required Jeremy Piven to drive a golf cart across Royce Quad while students were walking to and from class. It was a tough shoot logistically and made it important to the department that shoots worked around the students.

While the “Parks and Recreation” production team was used to the challenge of shooting on location, it had to take special care to work around the university’s daily operation, including not interrupting the BruinBus route.

“It’s difficult anywhere, it’s particularly difficult at a school that’s in operation when we’re shooting. We’re doing a production meeting and we have to get out because there’s a class that’s supposed to go in the room,” Smith said.

During the second day of shooting, the “Parks and Recreation” extras that played Pawnee locals and debate audi-

ence members milled around the Freud Playhouse courtyard. A few sang to themselves, some took a smoke break and Mara Marini, the actress who plays fellow candidate and porn star Brandi Maxxxx, strode back and forth until filming resumed.

The crew had worked through the threat of rain, a larger than normal cast and crew and alongside daily life in academia.

But even they could not prepare for the UCLA students.

“Some of your very ambitious students here at UCLA have attempted to become a part of the show,” Potier said.

So what did they do with these setcrashing students?

“We very politely ask them to leave,” Smith said.

Some students will live on in “Parks and Recreation” DVD history.

But for the rest, it was a wrap.

Unlike many of the performers at the Moth, who are writers or actors, Cerf holds several degrees in different areas of science, from physics to neuroscience to philosophy of science.

The Moth, and Cerf’s experiences with it, illuminates the importance of story­ telling, shaping a narrative that curves from beginning to end toward some truth, some message.

Last Valentine’s Day, Cerf took his then­girlfriend to the Moth for a date.

The theme was “Love Hurts,” and he ended up sharing a story about a girl he was with years ago.

They became a couple, but later on, they faced problems they couldn’t unscramble. She fell for someone else, and they broke up.

Ten days of storytelling about how (the girl) didn’t matter, how I forgot this important part where you’re much better.”

His frequent participation in the Moth has also led Cerf to view his life as a book. Bold decisions become plot twists,

good and bad events become turning points in the narrative.

“For example, every time there’s an intersection in the road, and one way goes to a dark street that may be a short­ cut – I choose that one, because I know that’s going to be a story,” Cerf said. “I 7$3'2".0'1#)0'"$!0)0%!"$E'$#<&F Missing planes or trains is no longer a nuisance for Cerf, but a story to share at a Moth competition.

One time, Cerf walked off a plane in !/0'<)#$E'+"!-'e'/0'<*%':-"$E'!#'a#10' 64!'*++"30$!*22-'0M"!03'!/0':"E/!'34)"$E' a layover in Malta – and caused a code red. All flights out of the airport were stopped because an Israeli man had disappeared from a plane, taking one suitcase.

By nature, Cerf is an impulsive person who’s curious about human behavior,

Cerf’s inquisitiveness about people and the stories they exchange, extends to his research, which is partly inspired by the Moth.

Cerf studies engagement, the state of being engrossed by some stimulus, whether it’s a book or a soccer game.

He brought some of the Moth’s best storytellers into the lab and had them tell a story while their brain activity was recorded. Then Cerf had a group of people listen to the story and monitored their brains. They were also exposed to other forms of entertainment, from a classical music concert to a physics lecture.

Cerf found that if people are immersed in the same story, the same song, the same discussion, their brains look the same while they are engaged.

“If 20 people go and listen to a story at the Moth and are engaged, all their brains look alike,” Cerf said. “And they look similar to the person who tells the story.”

The research could have important applications. For instance, if President Barack Obama were choosing between three State of the Union speeches, he could play each speech for a group of people and measure their brain activity, Cerf said. Obama could then deliver the speech that neuroscience proved most interesting.

But Cerf’s research also speaks to why the Moth has become a fixture in Los Angeles. A simple, well­told, off­beat story captivates the audience and creates a community, Cerf said.

“Someone tells a very, very personal story, then comes and sits by you,” Cerf said. “Then suddenly you have a person you can talk to, and you know how he and his wife met. It creates this unique experience.” !"#$%&'&()"#*+&,-.,&'&/0

Back then gowns were worn daily and had both symbolic and practical uses. Scholars held minor religious orders so they dressed in cleric robes and the thick fabric kept them warm in drafty buildings. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that United States academics – and only United States academics – felt it was necessary to detail the rules of academic dress.

In 1895, an Intercollegiate Commission of representatives from different academic institutions met at Columbia University to decide style, materials and what colors represented each field of learning. Today, most American universities adhere to the code established at this meeting albeit with small adjustments from institution to institution.
