Letter from the Editor Why, hello there, reader. How have you been? It’s been a whole summer since we last saw each other. You might have even noticed that we have changed our look.

Prime is entering its fourth year along with all the other seniors on campus. Unlike them, it’s not revising its resume for job recruiters or torpedoing into the black hole of senioritis.

Instead, Prime has shaken off its old look and is celebrating the beginning of a new year with a new design.

There’s something incredibly exciting about starting over, and every year means a whole new set of possibilities. That’s what we want to bring to you in this issue: a reminder that it’s a new year at UCLA, and that it’s up to you what you do with it.

Yes, budget cuts are still taking a toll on our education, and the economy is in what seems to be an unstoppable downturn, but we are living in Los Angeles. For one short period, we are all living in one of the craziest, most recognizable cities in the world and going to school on a campus that has so much to offer it’s impossible to experience it all in four years. I doubt Van Wilder could even do it in eight.

In this issue we asked students what they want to do before they graduate and talked to a football player who is doing it all.

We explored the Westwood bars for their signature drinks and hunted down the most affordable way to go out for a movie. We did all this in the hope of bringing you the best of UCLA as you begin what could be your best year at UCLA. This is your time to do it all, never sleep and take away more memories than you can remember. Take it from a fourth-year who’s waxing nostalgic.

So go ahead, read this issue from cover to cover during that class you are currently walking to/studying for/skipping. Midterms are over (or at least the first round are), so take a minute for yourself and enjoy our modest publication.

The Regency Bruin and Village Theater

The Billy Wilder Theater

The two apexes of Westwood, the Regency Bruin and Village Theater, are owned by Regency Theater, so they share the same discounts. Both theaters play one movie every two weeks and usually show wide-release blockbuster movies, such as the “Harry Potter” series. Students pay $8 with a valid student ID. Also, for $10 a year, UCLA students can buy a giant bucket of popcorn that comes with one free refill if they remember to bring it each time they see a movie.

The Hammer Museum’s Billy Wilder Theater is perhaps the best deal for UCLA students since it’s free with a valid student ID. In addition to films and other works from the UCLA film archive, the Billy Wilder Theater also shows public events, such as artist conversations and literary readings.

While there is no concession stand for popcorn fanatics, students can purchase a Hammer membership for $40 and enjoy perks such as priority seating at public events.

kbucksters It has become somewhat of a luxury to watch a movie at the theaters these days. From tuition hikes to the stock market-like undulation of popcorn prices, an outing to the movie theaters can be scant.

Thankfully, UCLA students can still find deals close to campus in Westwood. Here is the list of Westwood theater discounts that can feed your Ryan Gosling addiction.

Landmark’s Regent Theatre

The AMC Avco Center

Landmark’s Regent Theatre has one movie screen and typically shows independent and foreign films, with the occasional wide-release film, such as Focus Features’ “One Day.” Students can get in for $8.50 with a valid student ID – as opposed to the regular $10.50 adult price – and $8 bargain matinees are weekdays before 6 p.m. and the first show on Sunday. The best concession deal is the economy combo of a snack-size bag of popcorn and a fountain drink for $7.50 for those who want to interchange between thirst and hunger.

Located on Wilshire Boulevard,the AMC Avco Center shows several movies in wide release at a time, such as “The Help” and “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” It has student day tickets priced at $8.50 on Thursday with a valid student ID. For shows before noon, the ticket price is $6 every day.

Students can also buy discounted tickets from the Central Ticket Office for $8 for new releases and $6.50 for movies that have been out for two weekends. There is also an AMC Stubs program – for $12 a year, members can get a free upgrade on their concession snacks and a $10 AMC Reward for every $100 spent on tickets and snacks. For instance, if someone orders a medium-sized popcorn and decides to upgrade to a large, the difference of the price would be free.

Revitalized vinyl:

bringing records up to

scratch

Whether you actually listen to vinyl or just like the idea of music in its retro form, there’s something about vinyl that just seems cool. Here are some ways to bring some of that retro fun to your college living space. So start hunting for some cheap vinyl at your local thrift shop and get crafting.

Vinyl bowl Materials: Vinyl record Heat-resistant bowl Cooking sheet Oven Oven mitts or towel Time: 10 min.

Instructions: 1. Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees. Warning: Be sure to open windows and doors to ventilate and dissipate noxious fumes. Do not heat oven above 200 degrees.

2. Place bowl upside down on baking sheet and place record on top of the bowl.

3. Put baking sheet in oven. Let the record sit in the oven for about five minutes or until it begins to “flop� over the bowl. Use oven mitts to remove baking sheet from the oven. Use oven mitt to mold record around the bowl. You can form whatever shape you would like. If you are unsatisfied with the shape, put the record back in the oven and try again.

4. Let newly formed bowl cool for 10 minutes and it is ready to be used. Warning: Do not use your vinyl bowl for serving hot food.

Vinyl clock Materials: Vinyl record An old clock or a clock kit Key (or something similar) Batteries Time: 25 minutes Instructions: 1. Insert clock hands through the hole in the record and follow the kit’s instructions on how to install the clock kit.

2. You may need to widen the hole to fit your kit. You can use a key or something similar. Insert the key into the hole and twist it to widen the hole.

3. Install correct size batteries and hang clock on wall.

Materials: Vinyl record Heat-resistant container with a flat bottom (ex: glass casserole dish) Kettle for boiling water Wood block or brick Time: 10 min.

Instructions: 1. Boil water in kettle or on stove.

Pour the hot water into the heatresistant container.

2. Dip record into water and press to bottom of container. The vinyl should bend easily once immersed.

The bent part will eventually slide under your books in order to keep them upright.

3. Use wood block or brick to flatten the bottom of the record and create a 90-degree bend in the record.

Remove from water and let cool.

Materials: Vinyl record A round mold larger than the record (plastic or rubber mold is best) Clear polyester casting resin Polyester catalyst Paint mixing stick Sponge paintbrush Patience Time: 1 hour (24 hours to dry) Instructions: 1. Using paint mixing stick, carefully combine clear polyester casting resin (for example, Castin’Craft brand from your local craft store) with correct amount of polyester catalyst according to the directions on the resin can. Warning: It is best to do this outside to protect from fumes and spills. Use a plastic cup you no longer want.

2. Pour a layer of resin into mold, but only fill 1/4 of the desired amount. Allow this layer to set for a half hour so that your record will not sink to the bottom.

This will allow the record to “float” in between the layers of resin.

3. Brush one side of your record with prepared resin and place this side onto the first layer of resin. This will prevent air bubbles from forming in between the resin and the record. After it settles, begin pouring the rest of your prepared resin on top.

4. Wait. After 24 hours you may be able to remove your finished trivet.

However, sometimes it will take longer because of the ratio of catalyst to resin.

Refrain from touching drying resin as this will leave fingerprints. Resin is finished curing – or hardening – when it is hard to the touch.

“Lola” by The Kinks This 1970 musical narrative was written by lead singer Ray Davies to revisit a night when the band’s manager, Robert Wace, accidentally spent a romantic evening with a transvestite at a Soho nightclub.

The song dives into great length about the event and articulates Wace’s confusion as to why “she walked like a woman but talked like a man.”

“Every Breath You Take”

by The Police Music listeners often misinterpret Sting’s inspiration behind “Every Breath You Take.” Although the song can pass for a sappy rock ballad, its intent is more disturbing. Sting wrote of a dark character who is obsessed over a woman and who yearns for control. The song was released within a year of his divorce. To think that people play this song at their weddings.

“He Won’t Go” by Adele After releasing her first album “19,” Adele moved out of her mom’s house and into her own London flat. She knew few people in the city, but she eventually befriended a couple that was, at the time, coping with the boyfriend’s heroin addiction. Adele witnessed the journey the man made toward sobriety and wrote a song about the perseverance it takes to save an

“Wake Me Up When September Ends” by Green Day A common misconception about this 2005 summer single is that it was written about the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center. But Billie Joe Armstrong has specified that the song is a tribute to his deceased father, who coincidentally died on Sept. 10, 1982, from esophageal cancer.

“Love Song” by Sara Bareilles UCLA alumna Sara Bareilles struck gold with her first hit “Love Song.” Bareilles was pressured by her record label to write a love song that was more marketable and commercial than anything she already wrote for her album “Little Voice.” After a long period of writer’s block, Bareilles vented her frustrations in what was a musical rebellion against what her label asked of her. Ironically, the song easily translates as a sassy up-tempo about relationship problems.

Although there is nothing necessarily wrong with making music to sell, here is a playlist of autobiographical songs, stories from the lives of the artists that are both very personal and strangely unexpected. They suggest that music can both tell an honest story and provide a catchy tune.

Sure, you could hit up the random apartment, stop by a party in the dorms or venture down Frat Row, but if you would like to expand your drink repertoire beyond Prestige Vodka and Natty Lights, there is a handful of bars within your reach. Five of Westwood’s finest bars shared what they claim to be their specialties. Whether you are new to Westwood or it feels more like home than the place you grew up, here’s a guide to discovering Westwood’s local bar scene.

The Glendon - $11 Named for the actress of the same name, the Jane Fonda is made from natural ingredients that the bar brings in daily. Light in both flavors and calories, it is found on “The Skinny” menu and is The Glendon’s best seller. Cocktails are on the pricier side, starting at $11, but the variety of fresh ingredients found in The Glendon’s mixed drinks, such as mint leaves, strawberries, honey and agave, provide an explanation for the extra few bucks.

The W Hotel’s Whiskey Blue - $14 ($7 happy hour) Whiskey Blue is a bit on the swanky side with its Polynesian-themed decorations, frosted glass staircase and indoor waterfall at the entrance. Located in the lobby of the W Hotel, Whiskey Blue is the place for a relaxed group outing, rather than a noisy beer bar. While its fancy interior and high-profile guest list suggest drinks that will break the bank, the bar offers specials for UCLA students.

Barney’s Beanery - $8.50 Barney’s best-selling drink is a sweet amber draft made by Firestone that they brew themselves called Barney’s Brew. According to its website, Barney’s welcomes “beer connoisseurs, beer lovers and beer buffs” alike to visit them in Westwood. With nearly 40 beers on draft and 160 bottled brands available, Barney’s also offers a choice of cocktails for the more adventurous. The Stoli Surprise combines all the Stoli vodka flavors with an assortment of juices.

Palomino - $8.50 ($5 happy hour) Quality mojitos are Palomino’s claim to fame. In the bar’s opinion, the key to quality is freshness. Palomino goes through about 20 pounds of mint leaves per day that are brought in from a local farm and used in its popular mojitos. The bartenders avoid using a lot of sweeteners in order to allow the crisp flavor of their mojitos to shine through. Mango and classic are bartender-recommended flavors.

The Westwood Brewing Company - $7 More affectionately known as Brew Co., The Westwood Brewing Company may be the only place in the world where people come in asking for an STD. Originally called The Spirit’s Delight, the bar’s popular drink was created and named by a former employee of the establishment. But upon the mysterious employee’s departure from Brew Co., the name was changed slightly.

The drink has similarities to a Sex on the Beach, but with lemon and raspberry vodka.

But not before Mom walks out of the kitchen with a gallon-sized Tupperware container of leftover turkey. While free food is the basis of any college diet, what is one to do with all that turkey? Here are a few ideas to help clear away the remnants of this year’s Thanksgiving feast.

Moist Maker* 3 slices of sourdough bread Cranberry sauce Turkey meat, sliced 2 slices of Swiss cheese Turkey gravy 1. Place your Swiss cheese on one piece of bread and your turkey slices on top of the cheese. Spread cranberry sauce on the second piece of bread.

2. Dip the third piece of bread in turkey gravy and place it on top of either of the other slices.

3. Assemble the rest of your sandwich.

*According to Ross Gellar on the television sitcom “Friends,” his sister makes the most delicious turkey sandwich with a secret “moist maker” in the middle (a slice of bread dipped in turkey gravy). It’s so delicious that a controversy over a co-worker eating Ross’ sandwich leads to him taking a forced leave of absence from work.

Cranberry Turkey Quesadilla Flour tortillas Turkey meat Four cheese Mexican blend Green onion, chopped Cranberry sauce

Turkey Cranberry Wreath* 2 packages of refrigerated crescent rolls ½ cup mayonnaise 2 tbsp. Dijon mustard ½ tsp. coarsely ground pepper 2 cups turkey, chopped ½ cups celery, sliced 3 tbsp. fresh parsley, snipped ½ cup dried cranberries 4 oz. shredded Swiss cheese 1 egg white 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Combine mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, pepper, turkey, celery, parsley, dried cranberries and Swiss cheese in a large bowl. Place to the side.

3. Unroll both crescent rolls and separate along the seams. Arrange the first can of triangle-shaped crescent rolls in a circle on a nonstick baking sheet with the long points sticking out. Take the second can of crescent rolls and align the base of the triangles with base of the triangles already arranged.

4. Scoop your turkey mixture and fill up the portion of your crescent rolls where the triangles from both cans touch.

5. Take the long points of your crescent triangles and wrap them over the turkey mixture. Alternate from an outside triangle to an inside triangle until all of the crescent rolls have been wrapped around the mixture.

6. Brush egg white on top of the crescent rolls.

7. Bake for 25 minutes or until rolls are golden brown.

Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes before serving. *Pampered Chef recipe 28 | Fall 2011 | Prime

1. Take one flour tortilla and evenly distribute cheese on top. Place turkey meat and chopped green onion on top of the cheese. Take the second tortilla and spread cranberry sauce across it. Put the two tortillas together like a normal quesadilla.

2. Heat your skillet (you can melt butter or use cooking spray on the skillet if you are worried about it sticking) and cook your quesadilla on both sides until the tortilla is crunchy and the cheese is melted.

3. Remove from skillet, cut into four to eight pieces and enjoy.

Turkey Noodle Soup 1 tbsp. olive oil 1 onion, chopped 1 cup celery, chopped 1 large carrot, cut 3 cups of water 2 cups of turkey stock 1 package of egg noodles 1-2 cups turkey meat Oregano Salt and pepper to taste 1. Heat olive oil in a pot and add onion, celery and carrot.

Let them cook until tender.

2. Add broth and water to the vegetables (you can add or subtract water depending on how concentrated you want your broth to be). Add egg noodles and bring to a boil.

When George Wolfe moved to Los Angeles about eight years ago, he felt like a fish out of water.

Originally from the East Coast, Wolfe had learned to canoe on eastern rivers.

Later in his life, he moved to the Pacific Northwest where he became an avid kayaker.

Once in Southern California, Wolfe began to miss rivers.

Angelenos often think of the river as nothing more than a stream surrounded by the man-made concrete channels that control its f loods, or as a scene for Hollywood movies such as “Terminator,” “Grease” and “The Beverly Hillbillies.”

But during a walking tour of the river put on by the Friends of the Los Angeles River, Wolfe felt at home.

He noticed very interesting boating possibilities on the river, and later, he began taking his boat onto the river on

small boating journeys.

A controversy over the navigability of the river arose in 2008. If the river was navigable, it should be protected, but if it wasn’t, the Environmental Protection Agency would not be required to oversee its care.

Wolfe and his friend Jeffrey Tipton embarked on a trip spanning the entire 51 miles of the river.

The legality of their actions was unclear at the time, and they paddled through urban areas at some points, upsetting some residents.

But by the end of their three-day trip they had proven the river navigable, and Wolfe and Tipton had inadvertently influenced the way the river has been perceived since then.

Three years later, a portion of the river was opened for public recreations as part of a summer pilot program that

The portion of the river opened up for the Paddle the Los Angeles River pilot program is almost hidden in the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area.

Flowing underneath the daily traffic of an urban city and only a few hundred feet away from bustling youth soccer tournaments lies a green and vibrant portion of the Los Angeles river.

“Right next to us here is a busy street,” said Andrew Lewis, UCLA alumnus and a visitor to the river. “But once we get down there, the trees blocked out the sound, and I 32 | Fall 2011 | Prime

was commenting to someone how it was so quiet and tranquil. ... It was really cool to see that, I don’t normally see that out here in the city.”

The program gave people the opportunity to paddle the river legally for the first time since it was changed into its current state by the Los Angeles County Flood Control District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930s, said Charles Eddy,

a member of the board of the directors for Friends of the Los Angeles River.

Visitors traveled down a one-and-a-half-mile stretch of the river beginning on Balboa and ending on the river banks in Burbank, said Yasmin Mero-Corona, project director for the Los Angeles Conser vation Cor ps. The shallowest part of the stretch is about eight feet deep, she added.

“This kayaking program is a major breakthrough,” Eddy said. “It’s the first time it’s been allowed. The public response has been great, and we look at this as a huge plus for public rights to use the

river.”

The program is able to show people a different side of the city, away from the traffic of the busy city, MeroCorona said.

“Once you’re down there, you don’t realize you’re in the middle of the city,” she said.

“You’re in Balboa Park, but you get lost when you see the native plants covering you.

You can’t see the bike paths, so you think you’re out in nature.”

The natural feel of the river, with its plants as well as wild birds, turtles and fish, surprised Lewis. The river is home to egrets, herons and ducks.

About a year ago, the EPA deemed the river navigable, and the Los Angeles Conservation Corps was asked to coordinate the program, Mero-Corona said.

With approval of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the program ran for a one-month period between August and September.

The 280 available spots on the tour sold out ten minutes after the program was announced and garnered a wait-list of 400 people hoping for a chance to paddle the river, said Mero-Corona.

After devastating f loods in the 1930s, the river was channeled to control natural floods, Eddy said. The river acts as a drainage for the city, and all of the trash which is not disposed of correctly ends up in the water, Eddy added.

Despite those appearances, the stretch of water used in the program is one of the cleanest in the river, and the quality of the water would be considered clean enough to drink in some countries of the world, Eddy said.

Still, waste is noticeable in certain parts of the river.

Beyond simply cleaning up the strip of water, the conservation corps used these examples of waste to show p e ople on t hei r t r ip t he importance of disposing their trash correctly.

“We try to take advantage of this opportunity to show people that it all starts at home,” she said.

Chris Espinoza, director of capital programs at the office of energy and sustainability, said he’s used to seeing the river by Boyle and Lincoln Heights in a more urban setting surrounded by walls covered with graffiti. He had no idea natural stretches surrounded by wildlife and veg-

etation existed.

“The most startling thing were the great blue herons,” Espinoza said. “The egrets are beautiful, but the herons are humongous and they fly right over you.”

The Mountain Recreation and Conservation Authority brought the element of safety to the program, said Fernando Gomez, a supervising ranger who guides the paddlers through the river.

A ll par ticipants are required to wear a life vest and a helmet, and the crew is trained in everything from applying bandages to using an electronic defibrillator. Crew members are also Prime | Fall 2011 | 33

trained in swift-water rescue.

Not that they had to use any of those things, said the light-hearted ranger, who jokes with the participants in the program to make them feel more comfortable on the trip. The program was accident-free for its entirety, he added.

“You have to break the ice, because many times when people come, they don’t know what to expect,” Gomez said.

“G et ting people involved makes it easier for them, and for the staff. And at the same time you’re educating them how to be safe and have fun at the same time.”

The program packed up its kayaks, paddles and tents for the summer, but interest and support for it continues to grow. Even dur ing the last days of the trips, curious passersby showed up to the program’s tent in Balboa Park, asking how to get placed on the trip.

For t he moment, r iver ent hu sia s t s w i l l have to wait. The program must be reviewed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in order to continue.

But people around the program are confident the program will continue next summer, and possibly expand to other areas of the river.

“People always end up with smiles on their faces after the trip and say they wish there were more opportunities or could bring their friends,” she said. “It’s the attraction and the fact that the river can be used for recreational purposes not just to channel water away from the city.”

“Art makes such an impression that it forces people to think and listen.”

– Alyssandra Wu, third-year world arts and cultures student World arts and cultures student Alyssandra Wu came into her first year at UCLA with a dream.

“Originally, I wanted to be a famous dancer, or be on ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’” said Wu. “I didn’t know what I wanted ... with my life freshman year, I just knew I wanted to dance.”

Now a third-year student, Wu has altered her goals to something that she described as more realistic and more meaningful.

“I feel that I’ve grown and matured since my freshman year,” Wu said.

“I obviously want to get my major done and study abroad, but I really want to be able to learn how to be a teacher and acquire those skills before I go into the workforce. I really want to teach higher education; that’s my goal now,” she added.

Wu said she believed that a career in education would allow her to take a leading role in finding solutions to many pressing modern-day issues.

“I think the reasons behind most problems in the world today, like the economy, or global warming, have their roots in a lack of education,” Wu said.

“The generation after us is going to be the reason for change, and I want to be

there to help them, educate them and see if they can solve some of these problems.

I think being involved in education will be very empowering.”

Wu cited her experiences over the last two years with different programs and groups, such as Synthesis Dance and an AIDS performance team called “When the Situation Gets Slippery,” with providing her with the inspiration to pursue education as a career.

“Those were all good experiences,” Wu said. “They helped me learn how to interact with children, how to teach and helped me figure out what I want to do after graduation.”

Wu said she planned to continue her teaching experiences and dance performances through her involvement in the Chinese Cultural Dance Club, through which she will be both teaching dance and performing at community events.

“People always ask why I study art because they say ‘It doesn’t make a lot of money’ or ‘It is not a real major,’” Wu said.

“The reasons I love art and dance are because I feel that it is a way to communicate with people, and it’s a better form of communication than just speaking.

Art makes such an impression that it forces people to think and listen.”

UCLA students have four years on campus, four years to explore all that UCLA and West Los Angeles have to offer. These four students tell us what they want to do before they graduate and leave it all behind.

“Los Angeles has infinite places to go. ... I want to take part in them all.”

– Brennan Ross, second-year neuroscience student The sheer scope of Los Angeles can be overwhelming to a small-town, outof-state student. However, for Brennan Ross, a second-year student from Roswell, Ga., the city’s size presents an exciting opportunity.

“I am allowed to go anywhere within one of the most populated and interesting cities in the world,” Ross said.

“Los Angeles has infinite places to go, things to see and weird and creepy events to take part in, and I want to take part in them all.”

R o s s , a ne u r o s c ie nc e s t ude nt , described his hometown of Roswell as slow-moving, and, at times, incredibly dull.

“Los Angeles is significantly better than Georgia in every way imaginably possible. Los Angeles has a certain type of life to it, a weird life, but a life force nonetheless that makes me feel like

there are infinite things to do,” Ross said. “In Georgia, there is almost never anything going on.”

More importantly to Ross, Georgia is lacking in Mexican food.

“The Mexican food in Georgia is not even in the same league,” Ross said. “All you get in the South is Tex-Mex food; none of it is authentic.”

Ross has loved Mexican food all his life, something that he attributes to his upbringing.

“It runs in my family; we all love spicy, tasty, flavorful food,” Ross said.

“I remember my grandpa and I used to eat bags of chips with the spiciest salsa we could find. By the end of it, we would both have red faces and be crying,” he added.

food.

“I’ve been to sketchy taco shops and eaten literally the greatest Mexican food of my life,” Ross said.

“I’ve even gone down to the Mexican border and had the greatest burritos of my life. Los Angeles has got all of these nameless little taco stands that are so authentic.”

Ross’ singular concern about the city was the daunting task of discovering all the Mexican food Los Angeles has to offer during his time as an undergraduate.

“In Los Angeles, the longer you stay here, the more events will pop up. While UCLA itself offers a good amount of things, I think you could finish them in a year if you wanted to,” Ross said.

“However, you could live in Los Angeles your entire life and still be experiencing new things.”

“Now that I’m graduating ... I really need to do these things.”

For count less people across t he world, Los Angeles is a city of fantasy and dreams. For fourth-year Elizabeth Black, it’s just home.

“A lot of people talk about wanting to go the Getty and the Pantages and things like that,” said Black, an English student. “Growing up here, I’ve already done all of that.”

But Black’s time in Los Angeles has become limited.

“I’m moving to Boston right when I graduate, my lease ends June 30 and I will be gone,” Black said. “There are some things I need to get done.”

As a result, Black has come up with a list of the few experiences she wants to have before leaving both the city and the university, one of which is the ambitious desire to experience Westwood in all of its culinary glory.

“I really want to go to every restaurant in Westwood, even the ones that look sketchy, or small, or not entirely sanitary,” Black said. “I’d want to start at Headlines, and end up at Tanino for dinner.”

Black is no stranger to restaurants in Westwood Village, but she admitted that she has fallen into somewhat of a routine.

“Even in our little bubble of Westwood, there are so many restaurants, but I like going to the same ones and ordering the same things,” Black said.

“I have gone to In-N-Out enough times to know the secret menu there, but I’ve never been to Bella Pita, though I have heard great things about it. I mean, I am a senior and I have never actually eaten in South Campus.”

Westwood Village extend beyond just merely eating at off-campus restaurants.

“I need to do karaoke at Brew Co. before I graduate,” Black said.

“I’m always at Brew Co., and I love to sing, but I never sing in front of people.

I really want to do it, obviously not solo, but with friends. I love that karaoke is so accessible in Westwood,” she added.

Though Black has her heart set on moving to Boston, the reality of leaving Los Angeles has given her the drive to complete her bucket list.

“I’ve always felt lucky and been proud to go here, but I did grow up here, so I never really had a bucket list,” Black said.

“Now that I’m graduating, I can’t believe it, and since I am moving away in less than a year, I really need to do these things.”

“I want to be able to say that I helped people come out of their shells to become ... artists.”

– Nerris Nassiri, first-year undeclared student

First-year Nerris Nassiri was wellknown among his class before he even moved to campus. Nassiri, an undeclared student, made an official Facebook group for the Dykstra/De Neve residential complex.

“The group got about 700 members,” Nassiri said. “When I moved in, everyone already knew me as ‘The Facebook Guy.’ I just want to meet a lot of people while I’m here.”

Though meeting as many members of his class as possible is important to Nassiri, his main goal is to integrate himself into the UCLA film and performing arts

scene, ideally as a film producing and directing student with a minor in theater.

“I’m putting together a team of freshmen to make some shorts and maybe submit them to some festivals,” Nassiri said. “Ideally, I really want to be successful in film and theater, and this is what I’m doing to start that.”

For Nassiri, who was born in Las Vegas before moving to Ventura County, attending UCLA is the realization of a lifelong dream.

“I’ve always wanted to be a Bruin in the back of my mind just because it’s Photo by Stephanie Son

in the middle of L.A., it’s the entertainment capital of the world,” Nassiri said.

“It’s like Ivy League education with nice weather.”

Nassiri said he had a specific vision of what he wants to have accomplished by the time he graduates.

“I want to be able to look back and say that I accomplished a lot of things in the performing arts. I want to be able to say that I helped people come out of their shells to become performing artists, and maybe discover hidden talents,” he said.

Though he has yet to complete a quarter at ULCA, Nassiri said he is already feeling the time constraint of a four-year degree.

“I wouldn’t mind staying five or six years,” Nassiri said. “I already love it here. I’m going to have fun, but I can already tell it’s going to zoom by.”

Edison and his daughter Savannah spend time together in his apartment in Westwood Village.

Savannah needs some shoes.

She just turned 2 years old and she already wears a child’s size seven. Based on her projected growth, she’s going to need some new shoes in a few months.

Justin Edison, a redshirt senior defensive tackle on UCLA’s football team, is doing everything in his power to make sure she gets those shoes and anything else she’ll ever need.

“Justin always says ‘Savannah needs some shoes, we’ve got to work hard,’” said fellow redshirt senior defensive tackle Nate Chandler, who entered UCLA with Edison in 2007. “That has become our defensive line motto – we’re out here trying to get Savannah some shoes, we’re trying to help him take care of his daughter.”

The saying, which is a variation from the song “Hustle Hard” by Ace Hood, is both literal and metaphorical. Of course, Savannah will need some shoes, but Edison sees it as a motivation – an inspiration to give it his all.

Savannah was brought into Edison’s

world at an inconvenient time, to say the least. Edison was only 20 years old and he was just beginning his third year of college; his sights were only set on education and football.

All of that changed the day she was born.

“It was definitely a life-changing experience – it still is. Everyday it still is,” Edison said. “It’s helped me realize how blessed I am to be here and have Savannah and have the opportunity to play football and go to school here and provide for her after I leave.”

Savannah’s birth itself also came at an inopportune time, as she was born only one day after a game against Stanford in Palo Alto, which he missed because of her birth.

“I remember, when she was born, Justin was all over the place,” Chandler said.

“He was surprised even though he knew it was going to happen, but seeing his face when he found out it was happening right then was special – that changed him as a person.”

Before coming to UCLA, Edison was a basketball player for the majority of his life, and the way he talks about the sport

makes it seem like a little part of him still thinks he is. It wasn’t until his junior year at Verbum Dei High School that he began playing football. He started playing because he thought it looked fun, but after only one season, he earned a bevy of Division I scholarship offers and eventually chose UCLA. It was a bit of a culture shock for him once he arrived in Westwood Village, as he was transitioning from a small private high school to a large public university.

“As far as the distance, it wasn’t a big change or anything, but campus life was way different than home,” Edison said.

“At Verbum Dei, we had a student body of 300-330 at the most. Our graduating class was 60 students, so that transition was really different to be around so many people.”

While the switch from high school and college was already quite an adjustment for Edison, fatherhood was a total paradigm shift.

“I just don’t overlook things – I can’t overlook things. It is like a newfound motivation to give everything your all. Like in football and school and everything else,” Edison said.

The transition to fatherhood took some time for Edison. He went through the same hardships most first-time fathers do, only he had the burden of school and football added as well.

“It was hard sometimes, I’ll be honest, it was really hard,” Edison said. “Especially nights before midterms or tests, I would be up late doing homework or studying and she wouldn’t be able to sleep because she got so used to me lying down with her before bed. Those were difficult times.”

To only complicate matters, Edison and

“Before Savannah, I just liked to relax.

When there wasn’t practice or school or studying, I would just turn the TV on or hang out with some teammates. Saturday after a game, we would go out, but now I go home and spend time with my daughter. It was a big change, a big, big change, but I love it – I love her,” he said.

It’s this love that allows Edison to patiently admire her as she rubs a coin against his flat-screen television.

It’s this love that scared the life out of him when she had to go to the emergency room after she hit her mouth on the edge

seasons. During spring ball, though, Edison turned it on. He stepped into his role as a leader on the defensive line, solidifying himself as the starting nose tackle.

“I wanted to assert myself. As time goes on, you start realizing that she’s getting bigger. My daughter is growing up fast and she’s going to need to be in school soon,” Edison said.

“She’s going to need this and that, so I need to find a way to make sure she has that, and I have to do whatever I can to make sure that happens. The new coaches come, and I have to let them know I’m serious about football and they can count on me to be in the game, be a starter, do my job and help the team win.”

Edison dedicates a major part of his life

“We had to work on our relationship for Savannah’s sake. It was rough at first, because we were together, and then we had to work on the hardships of going our separate ways,” Edison said.

Edison and Savannah’s mom were able to work through the break-up and they now share custody of Savannah, knowing that would be best for her.

“Everything is great right now,” Edison said. “We had her birthday party at the park recently and her mom, her dad, my mom and my dad were all there talking and getting along, which is great for Savannah.”

During the football season, Edison has Savannah on Sundays and Mondays because of his rigorous schedule, whichhas him spending close to 40 hours a week on football while he also works on finishing up his degree.

It is clear just by watching the 6-foot-4inch, 285-pound Edison talk about how Savannah enjoys Dora the Explorer while he prefers Phineas and Ferb that those two days are his favorite days of the week.

As expected, Edison only applied to graduate schools in the Los Angeles area so he and Savannah’s mom, who will be at UCLA for graduate school, could stay close together.

If Edison does get a shot at professional football, though, complications could arise.

“There’s a little worry there, but the good thing about the potential of me having to leave home if I do go pro is that our relationship is good enough that we will work out a way to keep each other in Savannah’s life no matter the situation,” Edison said.

Either way, Edison is going to keep working. He will keep going to class, watching game film and putting in the time to do his best. After all, he has to – Savannah needs some shoes.

Each year, the UCLA Alumni Association and the Student Alumni Association sponsor the Beat ’SC bonfire, which is lit at the spirit rally the week of the UCLA-USC football game. The construction of the bonfire is a major undertaking, and the process is broken down below. You can see this year’s bonfire on Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Wilson Plaza.

No lighter fluid is used in the fire

The team of builders constructs the bonfire between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Layer 4: two wood blocks

Layer 2: 12 wood blocks 50 decorated panels, made by student groups
