Welcome to Cookley Sebright Primary School Cookley Sebright Primary School has been at the heart of its community since 1849. We take children from the age of 3 (into our Nursery) until the age of 11 (Year 6). The children are at the centre of all that we do and we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to be happy, feel valued and experience success. We strive every day to provide a breadth of opportunities to promote learning, to make learning fun and to excite so that our pupils can achieve their very best during their time here at Cookley Sebright Primary School. We are extremely fortunate to have a well-equipped building (classrooms built in 2014) and a fantastic outside space. We take great pride in the fact that we have a happy and inclusive school in which we encourage respect for each other and respect for the environment. We encourage resilience and an enjoyment of learning to enable our children to become independent learners with lively, enquiring minds. Curriculum At Cookley Sebright Primary School, we are committed to offering a curriculum which is broad and balanced and which builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills of all children, whatever their starting points. The curriculum is designed to be a progressive sequence of learning from the EYFS to Year 6 and gives children an opportunity to build key knowledge and skills each year. We are passionate about children creating work that they are proud of and teachers work hard to plan in these opportunities across the range of the subjects. Reading and high-quality texts underpin the vast majority of our curriculum accompanied by a range of authentic and exciting experiences, which assist in the social, emotional and spiritual development of all of our children. Specialist provision for PE, Music and Spanish enhances the whole school curriculum and ensures that the children have the best provision we can offer. It is important to us that children receive a curriculum that meets their needs but also gives them the skills necessary for life in the 21st century. This includes ensuring that wherever possible, there are links to other cultures, faiths and beliefs. Throughout their time here, we want our children to enjoy their learning, make connections and be fascinated by the world around them. We want them to ask questions, be curious and see how the skills and knowledge they learn links in with their own lives and how it has impacted others.

Early Years At Cookley Sebright Primary School we have purpose-built facilities and highly trained staff who cater for the needs of our youngest pupils. Our Early Years is split into Nursery and Reception classes. We strongly believe children learn best through play and so we make sure that the environments they play in are well planned, organised and resourced with clean, varied learning resources to promote high quality engagement. Children have opportunities through their play to think creatively and critically alongside other children as well as on their own. They are able to practise skills, build upon and revisit prior learning and experiences, at their own level and pace. During the sessions in the Early Years your child will follow a curriculum based upon the Early Years guidance. We carefully plan topics to provide opportunities for investigation and problem solving. We take great care to ensure that the children in our nursery and reception years continually follow a curriculum that is appropriate to their needs. As parents you are the first educators of your children. We believe that a close partnership with parents is vital in the successful education of your child. Parents are a key part of our transition programme from home into nursery and then into our reception class. Throughout the year, we provide opportunities for parents to observe and take part in some of our learning sessions. We recognise the huge benefits that a shared partnership brings to each child’s early learning experiences.
Environment Situated in the heart of the village, behind the original Victorian building lies a spacious, modern primary school which lies in an enviable semi-rural setting with stunning views of the surrounding countryside, neighbouring church and nearby canal. The school boasts a large playground area, an adventure playground and a well-established Forest School area. Outdoors, Forest School activities are led by dedicated leaders. Sessions outside offer all learners the opportunity to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences. We plant, grow, harvest and eat our own vegetables and have planted our own ‘bee trail’ in conjunction with the community Britain in Bloom team. Through outdoor activities our children are engaged in fun and memorable learning which encourages communication, problem solving and increased emotional wellbeing. The Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal is adjacent to the school land. Canal access allows our KS2 pupils the opportunity to explore water-based activities direct from the school grounds. Indoors, enriching classroom learning environments are vibrant and welcoming, with celebrations of children’s work and creativity evident throughout the school.

Other information about Cookley Sebright Primary School Our out-of-hours wraparound care is open daily from 7.30am until 5.30pm. The children are provided with a range of activities to keep them occupied to enable our parents that need childcare the convenience of this provision on site. Some of our Year 6 children are selected by their peers to become our House Captains and prefects. These children work closely with the teachers to provide good role models for the other children in school and help organise inter-team events and house assemblies. Our houses are named after the four roads that lead to the school – Austcliffe, Lea, Bridge and Castle. As well as all of our curriculum work, here at Cookley Sebright Primary School, we feel that it is important to give our children other opportunities and experiences. Our Easter Bonnet Parade is enjoyed by the community as a whole and our fundraising and charity work aims to support local initiatives as well as those further afield. The well-being of our pupils is of the utmost importance to us. As a Thrive® school, we promote children’s positive mental health, developing the relationships that help children and young people to flourish and learn. We also work closely with our school counsellor and mental health practitioners to promote healthy minds. Our PSHE work focuses on teaching the children how to keep themselves safe in their day to day lives and online. Assemblies promote our values that encourage mutual respect and tolerance, preparing young people for life in modern Britain.
