SATs Superstars
Field Trip to Ilkley
What a fantastic event! 17 Field Laners joined a choir of over 5000 children to sing their hearts out at Sheffield Arena as part of the Young Voices series of concerts that make up the biggest children's choir in the world! It was great to share the experience with our friends from Healey school too.
Our amazing Year 6 children did us proud last week as they met this challenge with determination and a positive attitude. We could not have asked for more!
Years 3 and 4 had a fantastic, if a little wet, visit to Nell Bank in Ilkley to find out all about rivers. The children came back full of enthusiasm, having had walks through Middleton Woods and a good trek to the river. We will definitely be returning!
Firefighters in the making Our ‘Fire Fit’ pupils have continued to make fantastic progress on their six week course. They have been challenged to improve their teamwork and fitness levels. This included wearing a full fire fighter kit and rolling out the hoses! The children had an amazing time and it was a great opportunity for them all. At the end of the six weeks, they all took part in a passing-out ceremony to celebrate their achievements. As you can see from the photo it is difficult to tell the difference between them and the real firefighters!
POSITIVITY
Through POETRY Thank you to the wonderful charity that really does make a difference to young people’s lives. The founder of Let June Make A Difference – soon to be known as Let June – came to Healey School to talk to our Year 6 children about the charity’s work. Many of our pupils have benefitted from their generosity and kindness: https://www.letjunemakeadifferen ce.org/ Our Nursery classes have enjoyed learning many skills through the story of The Little Red Hen.
Year 6 have written and performed poetry using the theme of positivity at Healey School. They have used reverse poetry techniques for effect. Many thanks to Jemma Wroe at UBHS for assisting with the filming and video editing.
Year 2 are growing broad beans and observing and measuring changes over time, as part of their learning in Science.
Our Secondary News
Careers Visit We were visited by the Deputy Chief Executive of The Careers & Enterprise Company who spoke to students about their careers support and needs. They also met with key members of staff from both BGHS and UBHS to discuss the careers provision and how it can be further developed. We look forward to working with them more in the future.
Suitcase Stories A series of workshops were run by York St John’s University at BGHS focussed on storytelling and climate education. The feedback has been positive: “Students were extremely engaged, really playful and supported each other.” & “The level of discussion and collaboration was impressive.” The students’ stories were filmed and will be played back to them at a screening during their upcoming visit to the university on 9th June.
The Brilliant Club - Graduation Event During the Spring Term, a group of our Year 10 students have been working towards completing The Brilliant Club, a university-based programme. The Scholars Programme places PhD students, looking to expand their teaching responsibilities, in schools to deliver university-style tutorials over a period of 12 weeks. The Brilliant Club is a charity, which aims to widen access to higher education institutions to students from areas that traditionally don’t have high take-up rates. Students were invited to attend their graduation ceremony at The University of Manchester and were also given a tour of the university as part of the experience. They all had a fantastic day and thoroughly enjoyed their visit as well as the whole experience of being part of The Brilliant Club.
Cultural differences, stories and learnings
UBHS recently welcomed Sam Neumann to school to discuss the Holocaust, its impact & legacy with our Year 7, 8 & 9 learners. Sam told the story of his mother, a Holocaust survivor, and explored the roots of the 2nd World War in addition to other cases of genocide and injustice around the world. Learners were keen to ask questions and develop their knowledge and understanding of one of the greatest and most horrific tragedies in recorded history.
We also welcomed the Carry My Story team and Dieudonné to our Forest School with our Year 7 learners. It was a fantastic session, which was really inspirational for both learners and staff. The learners also had the opportunity to ask Dieudonné some fantastic questions. The feedback we’ve had was that the team felt well supported and welcomed by all the staff and students and Dieudonné was very impressed with the level of questioning and comments from the students.

Careers Connections BG6 students discussing careers opportunities in schools with our partners from The Careers & Enterprise Company.
Year 13 Pre-exam Send Off The BG6 staff team, including tutors, teachers and Year 13 students are getting together before half term to celebrate their achievements, mark the start of their study leave and wish them well for their exams. There will be tasty cakes, nibbles and drinks as well as balloons and a backdrop to take photographs with friends as well as staff.

Rebecca works with Emma Rodrigues as School Direct ITT Support at BGHS. She works with Guides and supported the recent Erasmus visit as well as dedicating her time after school in support of the Suitcase Stories workshops.
For the dedication and organisation for the Young Voices event for Field Lane, as well as practising with the children every week in and amongst all her other commitments. Thanks also to Mrs Naseer and Miss Elahi, for their support in making the trip run so smoothly.
Lisa (UBHS) leads on the Kirklees Climate Commission work. She also coordinates the Youth Panel and works hard to fulfil the Eco Schools criteria, as well as spreading the word across our Trust family of schools.
Our Community Work … really means a lot to us, and we see our Trust and our schools at the very heart of our community. Community Makes Us and it is the unity in community that matters.
Let June Make A Difference The Let June Make a Difference team joined the BBEST Hub Meeting earlier this month. They introduced their fantastic charity, which is truly inspirational founded in the memory of June Dewhirst. The charity is dedicated to helping young people aged up to 17, who study or live in North Kirklees, by providing grants to improve their quality of life.
