ill Community Primary School and Nursery? Mums and dads take you in to school to settle you in. Alisha, Harry and Tobias are very excited about starting school. You will hang up your coats, change your book ... and then start to have fun!

How do I make friends?
Teacher is helping Tobias, Alisha and Harry to feed the school rabbits. It’s fantastic fun. Sally runs over to help. “I wish my bed was made of straw too,” says Tobias. “It would be very prickly,” says Harry laughing. “Can I feed the rabbits a carrot?,” Alisha asks the teacher. Sally asks if they are going to play on the climbing frame next. They all say “YES”…because they all love the playground.

What if I’m hungry? In the morning you can have fruit and drink. Alisha likes milk, and especially drinking it through a straw. “The straw turns white,” giggles Alisha. Harry and Tobias love peeling and eating bananas. “They are my favourite,” says Harry. 6

At dinner time, the dinner ladies will help you get the food you like. Lunchtime supervisors will help you at the table where you can sit with your friends.
“These sausages are yummy,” Tobias says to Harry. “I love the mashed potato,” replies Harry, feeling really hungry.

What will I do in school? You will do lots of different fun and exciting activities at school. Teacher is helping Alisha to write letters. “I’m great at letters,” says Alisha. “I can’t wait to show mum and dad what I’ve learnt to do today!” Harry is reading a book about elephants. “Elephant is a long word,” he says to Tobias. Sally is telling teacher that she needs the toilet.
The toilet is next to the classroom. Just ask an adult in class if you need the toilet.

What happens at home time? Before you get ready to go home, you will all sit on the floor and the teacher will read you a story. Alisha is really excited to hear about the snail’s adventures. “I think I’d like a pet snail,” she says to the class. They all laugh, and say they would like a pet snail too! “I really enjoyed feeding the rabbit today,” Tobias says to a new friend called Gracie. “I can’t wait to come back tomorrow.” Gracie nods and says, “I wonder what we will be doing tomorrow? I hope we do some painting. I do a lot of painting at home.” After the story, you will put on your outdoor clothes and collect your book bag. Alisha has already collected her packed lunch.

Helping to get your child Reception Ready Parents often ask us what their child will need to be able to do before starting reception class. To help, we have written this guide.

You may find it useful to read this through with your child before they start reception, and have practice sessions for anything they are not sure about.
Recognising their name We will teach your child how to recognise letters and numbers, but it will help your child to settle in if they can recognise their own name on coat pegs, class drawers etc. Try writing their name on items at home, and asking them to see how many times they can find and read their name.

Taking shoes on and off Your child will need to take off their outdoor shoes sometimes when they are at school. Help them practice this at home. Also, please think about their shoes and buy a pair that are easy for your child to take on and off independently. Velcro fastenings are a great idea.

Writing their name in lower case We will teach
your child to write their name, but it is helpful if they can write their name when they start. You could ask your child to practice writing their name in some of their favourite books at home.

Going to the toilet on their own Your child will need to use the toilet, independently which includes wiping themselves, flushing the toilet and washing their hands… so encourage this at home please.
Alisha loves the bubbly soap in the school toilets…it smells like flowers!

Fastening and unfastening coats and cardigans
Using tissues to wipe and blow their nose
Your child will need to take coats and cardigans and jumpers off and on during the school day. Help your child practice this at home. Also, please think about clothing that is easy for them to put on and take off, so think about easy coat fastenings for example.
Children often have frequent colds in their early school years. Please supply your child with tissues if they have a cold, and show them how to wipe and blow their nose too.
Alisha and Harry enjoy using zips and big buttons.
